Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let's talk about it right now with a guy who
covers the Panthers inside and out every day. Good friend
of ours, good friend of the station, Joe Person of
the Athletic, is back with us for a Thursday conversation.
What's up, Joe Person? How are you, buddy?

Speaker 2 (00:12):
What's up? Dude?

Speaker 1 (00:13):
You know, trying to sift through all sorts of stuff,
including this Micah Parsons news, which we'll get to here
in just a second. I wasn't in the press conference today.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
You were.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
You have a better memory than I do, is you?
And I learned a couple of weeks back anyway, So
I trust the things that you take in. I didn't
hear everything Dan said then, though we have the audio.
But earlier, you know, he told us point blank, Adam
Feeland wanted this, we pushed for it, and we got
it done. What do you think of the deal and
what do you think of that rationale?

Speaker 2 (00:40):
Yeah? I wrote about this this morning in The Athletic,
and look, the narrative coming out of Mint Street is
that Adam Feelin didn't push for this, that he wasn't,
you know, being a pain about it. But I think
it was Dan. Today we talked to you know, obviously

(01:01):
David both days. Anyway, I think what he said was
once once feeling heard that the Vikings call had called,
like his eyes lit up, like he was all in,
you know, I mean, like I get it. He not
the first athlete that wanted to go home and finish
his career, you know. Heck, Julius Peppers did it here.

(01:24):
So then it became and I asked, Hm, point blank,
did you feel pressure at that point to get it
done at you know, at any cost? And he said, look, yeah,
I wanted to get it done. I wanted to do
right by a feeling, but I also wanted to do
what was what was fair. And I'm sure he told you.
And what I reported this morning was they wanted fourth

(01:47):
round value and they they you know, and if you
look at the chart the way the pick swaps went
and all this and getting the fourth and twenty seven
because as you know, the Vikings didn't have a fourth
this year. They're getting one, you know, in the spring
for Daniel Jones leaving, so they're getting a comp pick,

(02:09):
but they don't have one now. So I think it's
a pretty fair deal. I mean, when when you think
about now, I know, you know, Deebo Saniel. They had
to pay down his contracts some, but you know, getting
a fifth for Debo compared to a fourth for the
thirty five year old Adam Feeling, I didn't hate it.

(02:29):
The bigger question to me is, just boy, are these guys,
these you know, twenty two, twenty three, twenty four year
old year old receivers highly drafted though they may be?
Are they ready to assume the Torch and Panthers think
they are? But really no way to know until the
games that they start kicking them off here in week

(02:51):
and a half.

Speaker 1 (02:52):
Well, Joe, I get the honor and privilege of passing
along to you and the audience right now, some massive
breaking news out of the NFL. The Dallas Cowboys have
traded Michaeh. Parsons to the Green Bay Packers, according to
Adam Schefter just a minute or two ago. Your your
thoughts on Micah Parsons, who's been the topic of conversation
today being dealt to Green Bay? Anything off the top
of your head.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
I mean, I'm kind of shocked. I thought this would
go the route that a lot of the Cowboys negotiations,
whether it's Dak Prescott or Sam Pek Elliott, you know
where Jerry Jones managed to piss him off, and yet
still at the eleventh hour, you know, get a deal done.
I thought that's how this was going to head. And

(03:34):
then when you started hearing talk about a second opinion
and whether that was accurate or not, or whether that
was finally the little push that that got Dallas to
move him. No, I'm very surprised. I mean, that's that
is huge. I mean, the defensive player of the year,

(03:55):
arguably the best defensive player you know, period, year in
and year. So yeah, the Panthers won't see him. Well, no,
they were going to see him and when Dallas came here.
Now they'll see him when they go to Green Bay
November first.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
Yep, if you're just tuning in again, Panthers out of
this conversation very quickly, if they were ever in it
to begin with. Micah Parsons dealt to Green Bay. And
apparently Parsons and the packers have already reached an agreement
on a four year, one hundred and eighty eight million
dollar contract in Green Bay. So he's a packer for real,
for real. Joe person of the Athletic is with us
on the hotline here, Joe the Hunter Renfro thing again.

(04:33):
I heard some of the clips from earlier. Dan told
us that this is I asked him, I said, did
you offer him a practice squad spot and he just
doesn't really want it? What's the deal here? And Dan said, no,
you know, we're talking fifty three man roster here. But
you know, same things you heard earlier in communication, still
talking to him. What does this all mean to you, Joe?

Speaker 2 (04:52):
I don't really get that because they had an opportunity
to keep him on the fifty three man, I mean,
and so I don't I don't know. I mean, I
guess now obviously Adam Thielen's gone, that would be a
big difference. But they they could have kept him to
begin with. And I think David Moore could have you know,

(05:12):
probably would have been fine going on practice squad. I
don't think he was going to go sign anywhere he
did not like. Like Renfro, David Moore would not have
had to pass through waivers. I thought David Canalis yesterday
gave the most candid and frank response about Hunter Renfro,
and he said, look, love Hunter Renfro, what he stands

(05:34):
for as a guy, as a player, he said, but
we saw some peaks and some dips, and they did.
We all did. And I think that hamstring injury the
first week of camp set him back some. And then
when he played those last two preseason games. Now he
went out there getting a ton of reps with Bryce
Young to be clear, if he got any reps with Bryce,

(05:57):
But you know, asking around the league the last couple
of days and talking to some personnel people from some
other NFC teams, They're like, yeah, I wasn't really seeing it.
And so I think Hunter Renfro right now is having
talked to him a couple I guess in June for
a big feature story, and I talked to him a

(06:20):
lot about, uh this what he did last year working
at his own uncle's business up in upstate South Carolina.
I think he's weighing the not necessarily the Panthers against
the Raiders, against pm X, Y and Z. I think
it's like, do I want to keep playing football or
do I want to go back to my uncle's business
where he's, by the way, also an investor and part owner.

(06:44):
And so that's my read on it. I'm I'm you know,
I'm if he if he signs with the Packers tomorrow.
You can tell me what an idiot I am. But
but you know he he's got a house right up
the road and more or less in Simpsonville, South Carolina.
You know he's Yeah, fact for the story I did
on him, recently said he might go to Atlanta this

(07:07):
weekend for the Clemson LSU game. Excuse me, I guess
that's in Desinally. Yeah. Nevertheless, I think he wants to
stay close to home. So I think the Panthers are
still in it.

Speaker 1 (07:19):
Yeah, I'm with you. We're all guessing at this point.
Joe person the athletic, he's with us here on the hotline, Joe,
Yesterday's big news that got us off and distracted in
the five o'clock hour, But it's big news. Ikyakwanu appendectomy
on Sunday. That was two weeks out from the opener
in Jacksonville. We had surgeons and medical professionals texting into
the show yesterday giving us their thoughts on the timeline

(07:39):
of recovery. They seem to think day to day, there's
a shot he could be there in week one. But
you've been around a while, what's your expectation.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
I think it'd be a long shot. I mean he
was back to build in the building today. Now they're
off for the long weekend. No, he lives in Charlotte,
so he may go in for you know, I don't
know that there's much treatment he can do. I mean
maybe he's able to, you know, do some light weightlifting,
but I think you just wait for the sutures to

(08:09):
heal would be my expectation. But you know, can Alice said.
He they so they practiced again Labor Day and he said,
I don't think I'll practice Monday either. So then it
just becomes a question of like, if he gets back
out there Thursday, is that enough? You know? And based
on what I saw from some of the other backup

(08:31):
tackles during camp, I'd say, yeah, that's enough. I'd be
putting Ikey Aquana out there against Jacksonville if if it's
not going to obviously, you know, lead to any infections
or any sort of setbacks in his in his recovery
from that happened hectomy.

Speaker 1 (08:48):
Joe, a couple of things. We'll get you out of
here now. In terms, what is your understanding of their
current salary cap situation? I asked, because yesterday at about
this time we checked over the cap they were twenty
three million. Checked again today they're down to fifteen million
dollars in available cap space. I don't know if they
intend to do much of anything with what they've got,
But what is your understanding of the cap space they
do have and what they may do with it?

Speaker 2 (09:11):
Well, I think they want to roll it over. I
think that's why. And that was something that we and
I don't know that I'm sure, being the astute journalist
you are, you did talk about this, but getting an
extra seven million from sealing like that wasn't nothing like
and the you know, because there was talk like, oh,
the Vikings want the Panthers to help pay down this salary,

(09:31):
and and the fact that Dan was able to do that,
you know, and all they paid was the bonuses that
you know that they had already paid them one point
seventy five. So so they'll get that other seven million
to go toward the roll over for next year, I
think at this point, I mean, I don't see them

(09:52):
going out and making a big signing that they always
the GMS talk about wanting to have the injury pot
you know, you've got they've set aside twelve fourteen million
bucks whatever it is now to go sign injury replacement
for you know, for the course of an eighteen week,
seventeen game season. So but I don't know what the

(10:15):
precise number is, but I think their goal or intention
is to roll over most of that.

Speaker 1 (10:21):
Do you think bryceon Tremaine can make any like? Does
he have a significant impact on this team this upcoming year?
They clearly love him, but do you think he has
a big impact on this team?

Speaker 2 (10:30):
I don't know. I don't. I like him too, and
I think I think he's going to play mostly special teams,
like you know, the first couple of weeks as they
figure out this receiving rotation. But that receiver room just
lost a big piece. So everybody moves up a chair,
and that includes Bryce and Tremaine. And he asked the

(10:51):
background with Brad it from you know, when he recruited
him to Stanford and liked him out there, and course
ended up at wake or excuse me, uh, they were
together at Stanford. I'm getting my good academic schools confused.
But the point is, you know, I don't know. I've
got to In fact, I've got a deadline today that

(11:13):
I kind of forgot about it. We have to make
a bold prediction for the Panthers, and I'm kind of
leaning toward is it possible Jalen Cocher leads this team
in receiving this year. I don't know. I mean there
were times last year when if you put Lagett and
Jalen Cocher next to each other and you didn't know
which one was drafted in the first round and which

(11:34):
one was undrafted, I think you'd think Cocher was the
you know, the thirty second overall pick. So uh, could
tremain make an impact? Possibly? But but I think you know,
obviously McMillan, Lagette and Coker are going to get the
lion's share early on.

Speaker 1 (11:50):
Joe Person, we appreciate you as always, brother. I know
these are long days right now. We appreciate the time,
and I will see you again very soon.

Speaker 2 (11:56):
All right, buddy, have a good weeknd
