Speaker 1 (00:00):
Speaking of Caro a lot of Panthers. We have a
former Carolina Panther with us, and he's also a Purdue
boiler Maker, And I'm throwing that out there for the
handful of Purdue fans in the audience because there are
a couple. We got Kwan Short with us. You know
him is kk on site here at Platform Sports. It's
good to see you, brother. How you been good? I
mean great, man. I appreciate you guys having.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Me on well, thank you for making the time.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
I know you're probably enjoying not playing football these days
and you know, watching it like the rest of us.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
But what are you up to these days? My body
feel bad?
Speaker 1 (00:25):
I tell you that.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
I'm honestly, really man, just being a full time dad
man and just spending more of time than I lost
with the little one that she was growing up. She
was born in twenty thirteen, so that's when I got
into the least. So it's just been a process. But
now it's just trying to make up that time and
give her all the love that I had going and
now just being present more.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
Oh that's awesome. So what is she like? Does she
have hobbies? Like my girls started ballet? Yesterday.
Speaker 4 (00:49):
That's awesome.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
Very first ballet class yesterday. Couldn't believe it. That's awesome. No,
no hobbies. Well, she's she's doing band right now.
Speaker 4 (00:57):
Nice. So that's her. That was her thing going into
middle school.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
He's a musician.
Speaker 3 (01:00):
Yeah, so she's trying to figure out what she want
to do. And uh, that's her, that's her laying I
told him I'm gonna support everyhere she try to do.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
That's awesome. All right. Now, I'm assuming you're keeping up
with the team obviously, I know you're around.
Speaker 4 (01:11):
Yep.
Speaker 1 (01:12):
I think I've seen you out of a couple of
things as well. So you know, I've been covering training
camp as always. I've been at most practices. I think
this team is better, but NFL seasons always tend to
surprise us. What we think we know isn't always what
comes to fruition. Just give us your big picture thoughts
on what the Panthers are right now.
Speaker 3 (01:29):
I've seen him and and just analyzing just a little
bit that I've seen from the outside looking in. They
look more hungry. Yeah, they looking like they want to
be there. And you're just seeing like those guys connecting
on all different types of level was it on the field,
off the field, and and as a team to try
to build that that that tight knit that's what those
guys need to do. And you see Bryce is making
(01:52):
throws and and and actually stepping up and doing what
he needs to do in the defense. Is looking good
when I went to as well. So I think they
will be a lot better than they.
Speaker 4 (01:59):
Was last year. I think they still trying to find
out the identity.
Speaker 1 (02:03):
Speaking of Brightce, just you've been through the NFL journey
of having to acclimate to the league, understand the speed
of it, how it works. You're with grown man, It's
a business, all that stuff. How would you like how
would you describe his first couple of years, the trials
and tribulations, Like if you're talking to regular fans who
were just watching it on TV, what do you tell
them about what you think he's been through these last
couple of years.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
He's been a lot, man. I mean you come with
a lot of expectation. The first pick, you know, to
a team that hasn't been doing well, and what fans
look at is that that was the answer and it's
supposed to do what. You know, other quarterbacks that got
drafted done to different teams, but we've got to understand
that he was brought into a different situation.
Speaker 4 (02:44):
He was brought into a different group.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
Of guys, and as a young guy coming in, every
day is a new day.
Speaker 4 (02:50):
Every day is a new day. You're trying to figure
it out.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
So it's not only that it is heartbreaking or not heartbreaking,
but on heart nervously nervous. This guy trying to meet
everybody expectations and just getting out of the line of
who you are. And I think that's where as a
first year player, you kind of try to realize it's
like you're trying to please everybody, knowing that it's not
going to get done overnight. So I think that's where
(03:14):
his focus is now, is trying to take one step
at a time and trying to just build what he
can with this organization. And I think he's doing a
good job just leadership. This guy is doing everything around
the city as well. He's in the right steps, he's
in the right direction. I think once he figured it out,
it's going to be you know, hel to see that play.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
Former Carolina Panthers All Pro defensive tackle KK Shorter is
with us here as far as the defense goes. I
mean that was I'm not trying to be glibed, like
you can't get anywhere but up after last year, right,
I mean, it's just the trick. You're the worst defense
of the NFL. You can't get any worse than that.
But they brought in six new bodies. Derek Brown's back
and healthy. That kind of feels like an additional free
agent coming back. We know what he's all about. One
(03:56):
thing that I've heard a lot of. I heard Brentson
Buckner talk a lot about this when he watched practice,
said they're noticeably bigger, and he thinks they're gonna get
a lot better push up front. Turk Wharton is here now,
obviously speaking of former Perdue guys. Nick scorton coming in
as a rookie, prince lyman, Theellen's coming in. You brought
in Pat Jones down to Minnesota again. We'll wait till
the rubber hits the road on Sunday, But on paper,
(04:16):
do you expect this group to be significantly improved?
Speaker 4 (04:18):
Most definitely.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
You got Drek coming back and that was a big
key of what they needed last year. And and just
seeing him work this offseason and grinding and and and
stepping up and being a better leader and knowing that
he's going into whatever year that he's going to. He
got the younger guys he's looking up to him, So
I think he's gonna compliment the back half that we have.
And the most important thing is those guys have to
(04:41):
pay attention to details, not think too much on that field,
make decisive moves, and.
Speaker 4 (04:47):
Just get out of the quarterback.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
At this point is where everybody's just saying like, oh,
we need to do this, We can do that. Those
guys have nothing to lose, and those guys got everything
in the gang. And you see, like I said, the
mentality that those defensive lines have right now, and I.
Speaker 4 (04:59):
Think they I think they would do good, real good
this year.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
What do you think in terms of because of Nick?
Speaker 1 (05:03):
Right, Nick came out from Texas A and N but
obviously he was at Purdue. First played a bit heavier
at Purdue too. I think at two eighty he's down
to about two fifty two to fifty five now. But
one thing that stuck out I think immediately to everybody
was just the relentless Patre. Oh my gosh, you know
that first preseason game. We saw it right away how
big an impact can he have as a rookie.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
That's great, man. It just motivates everybody else around you.
I know Nick is not gonna stop, so I gotta
keep going. I gotta keep trying to get after the quarterback.
And just seeing him sprinting from one side of the
field to the other side. Man, it just gives the
panthonation and the defense hope to knowing that once this
guy outside outside of me, I don't have to worry
about him. I know he's going to do his job.
I just got to continue to do mine. So just
seeing that and and that's a big key for those
(05:44):
guys up behind us, you know, the cornerbacks and the
safeties and the linebackers. It's like we see somebody like
that in front of you, just relenting as motor. It
just makes everybody. Man, just just motivate everybody to keep going.
Speaker 1 (05:53):
KK Short live with us on set here at Platform
Sports in South End. You know, I don't know Ron
Rivera as well as you do. I didn't play for him,
but I've gotten to know him a little bit over
the years, and I got to talk to him again
here recently, and I've now gotten to know Dave Canalis
a little bit. One thing I know is they're different people,
that's for sure. You know, both left coach guys with
different kind of guys. Ron I would say a bit
more throwback, old school hard nos.
Speaker 4 (06:15):
Let's say definitely throw back.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
Yeah, Dave's a bit more new wave, right, that sort
of thing. But I don't know how much time you
spent with him, but I'm sure you've observed him.
Speaker 4 (06:23):
What do you I think his energy.
Speaker 3 (06:25):
Is great, really great guy encouraging the legends to come back,
couraging everybody who put a jersey on here to come
back and just be around a team. And you want
coaches like that just to have to embrace everybody. Like
I said, I played him a couple of years when
he was at Tampa, and the moment I met him,
he was like, how can I not know you have?
He was a force to it, you know, so you
(06:47):
know those guys man, just to see like the energy
that he brings and always smile and always has the
utmost respect for everybody.
Speaker 4 (06:54):
Man, it's this I would love to run through a
wall for a coach like that.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
Dan Morgan's the GM again.
Speaker 1 (06:58):
Dan was on recently he was faced with a I
think it's fair to say a fairly difficult decision in
trading Adam feeling a couple of weeks ago. Our understanding
and Dan told us directly on the show, was that
Minnesota called and he felt compelled to tell Adam about it.
When he told Adam about it, Adam was adamant that
he wanted to go home to Minnesota. That's a player
that a lot of fans thought we'd be counting on
(07:19):
going into this year. Now he's gone. You got Hunter
Renfro coming off the street. He didn't play it all
last year, and other than him and David Moore, it's
a bunch of first and second year guys. I forget
he was a danger he So what do you think
of the room?
Speaker 4 (07:32):
Then?
Speaker 3 (07:32):
Given all those circumstances, I liked it. I like the
receiver room. Okay, I like the receiver room. But it
all comes down to wanting to win. And just because
you got the names in the room, you got to
have the motivation, the motivation, the motor and.
Speaker 4 (07:46):
The drive to push this team.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
So I mean, you can have you know, all stars
on a roster, but if they're not going to do
what they need to do or what they expected to do,
then it doesn't count.
Speaker 4 (07:57):
But not to extinct those guys.
Speaker 3 (07:59):
Man, just seeing you know, preseason, those guys running up
the field and catching these balls. Uh, it's I think
it's I think it's a nice night. Dan did a
nice job in that room. I think I think overall,
in general, this whole offseason has been it has been
good for the pender.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
So, I mean, just you understand the physical nature of
the game better than anybody. I am just and I
have been a little concerned about Hunter just because he
hasn't played the top level, you know, just full speed
on a Sunday. Is that not something you really worry about.
Speaker 3 (08:26):
Nah, I think he'll knocked the dust off the shower
pass probably the first quarter of the game.
Speaker 4 (08:30):
You know. That's but that's the mentality.
Speaker 3 (08:33):
Yeah, you come in this league once, once you start playing,
you can be you can.
Speaker 4 (08:38):
Be injured tomorrow and game day you you four go.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
Like that's the mentality that we have as athletes, as
a competitor to understand that whatever we got going on
outside of football or body wise, we're strapping up for
the next guy in front on the side of us.
So I just think I think he'll just well, love
it all right. Two things, I'll get you out of
here and get back to eat some chicken wags because
that's what I.
Speaker 4 (08:58):
Want to do. They smell good.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
So one of the one of the key things I
think they did this offseason was bring back the entire
offensive lit right, depth included. It might be the most
important thing they did, honestly, But we now know that
Ikey just had an appen deck to me two weeks ago,
nearly and he's listed as doubtful for the opener on Sunday.
Now again, the good news is you got yosh Na'man back.
You got Brady Christensen back, so you have depth there,
but you don't have your starting left tackle top ten
(09:22):
draft pick. How big a concern is that for you
going into Jacksonville.
Speaker 4 (09:26):
That's tough.
Speaker 3 (09:27):
That's tough, and his lead the mentality is the next
man not right and you don't know when your jersey
number is going to be called.
Speaker 4 (09:34):
You got to be ready.
Speaker 3 (09:35):
And I think they have a number two or whatever
guy they move over and put in that spot is
fit for the challenge. What we would love to have
you back, yes, you know, but I think we'll feel
that spot and they just got to have a mentality
that if the team is smart, they'll try to you know,
target that side, but they'll put the right guy in
(09:56):
this position.
Speaker 1 (09:57):
All right, last thing ten years ago, about this time,
right your Carolina Panthers.
Speaker 4 (10:03):
Fresh out of training.
Speaker 1 (10:04):
Can we're taking off on a journey that nobody saw
coming fifteen and one, going to the Super Bowl. We
all know the story at this point, given what you
know better than anybody, and that was the experience of
that season. What that team meant to this city, how
it still talked about to this day. How important do
you think it is for the organization to honor that
team ten years removed from what happened.
Speaker 3 (10:25):
What do you think, Oh, that's such a big question.
I think that with that year, what that team did
with something special. When everybody understand that it around the
Carolina is that's special. And we can't take that for
granted just because just because it hasn't happened in a
(10:46):
long time and just football period. You know, you go
fifteen and one and you realize that it's greater. You know,
the commotion and the intensity goes up, you get the
playoffs and just seeing that those guys never waiting, never doubt.
It always came and worked without an expectation to be
(11:08):
the best. We just knew to work that day. And
just seeing I can name pretty much all those guys
on that team, just seeing the older guys come in
and just put their head down and work, work, work,
you know, Charles Johnson, all those guys, man, And I
think those guys earned the up pumpt respect to be
to be well recognized from that season, just because those
(11:29):
guys been in league probably eight to ten years before
me and was grinding that those grind years where the Panthers.
Speaker 4 (11:35):
Was owing whatever.
Speaker 3 (11:38):
And those guys get to walk out like that, man,
I think they need to be well deserved and well honored.
Speaker 1 (11:44):
Well, my man was a second team All Pro Pro
Bowl selection that year in twenty fifteen, had himself a
heck of a year, and I know it's accurate to
call him a fan favorite here in Carolina. KK Short
