Speaker 1 (00:00):
He is one of our favorite people in the Charlotte
Press Corps. He is the sports director sports anchor at
NBC Charlotte and a brand new dad. Everybody give it
up for the great Nick Carbondy, who's back on the
show post paternity leave. And it's good to have him back. Nick.
How is fatherhood? My man? It's good to have you.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Let's just say, knowing that I had to do something
on Tuesday at three forty five made me keep track
of what time and what day it was for the
first time in about a month. So grab me back,
ready to jump aboard the Panthers fun train. I will
defend myself. They did win thirty to nothing in my
last game covered, so this is not a MEILMX situation.
(00:40):
Oh yeah, but yeah, and listen, they should win this
Sunday too. I know we'll talk about it, all right.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
So you have been in that fatherhood vortex the last
several weeks where you don't know what time it is,
you don't know how much sleep you've gotten in the
last week alone. How's mama doing? I mean, have you
figured out the diaper situation yet? Like, have you settled
into being a dad buddy?
Speaker 2 (00:57):
I just did a feed and two consecutive diapers within
the last twenty five minutes. Let's go, and didn't even
sweat this call. Mom's doing great. She's taken care of
baby as usual right now so that I can get
this call done. And got a vote today too, So
getting out and about in the world.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
It's kind of nice, buddy, that's fantastic. Well, our congratulations
to you in the entire car Bony clan. But what
did you think about the Panthers going into the hollowed
grounds of Green Bay, Wisconsin and coming out with a
win on Sunday?
Speaker 2 (01:28):
That was an incredible win. And unless you're like the
Chiefs or the Eagles or some dynastic team, you don't
worry about what it looks like or what the score
is or what the quarterback's stat line was. This was
a game that you know, the Panthers, even last year
when they were in some of those big games against
some of those big name teams, you know, would come
(01:49):
up just short. So to have them go into Lambeau,
to have them make the wise decision before the game
that Greg Olsen and everybody you know by now has
kind of talked about to take the ball and then
get the direction in the uh in the second half. Uh,
and and nail the game winner into the win well
with the win with a rookie kicker. By the way
the defense is playing the way the run game is,
(02:11):
you know, they've obviously figured out like listen, let's just
ride the hot hand and Rico Dawdle right now, Bryce
Young again, not gaudy numbers, but once again, you trust
this guy in late game situations as as much as
everything else about you know, his career so far, uh
has has you know made us sit here and go, okay,
(02:32):
we got to wait and see in those situations he
plays really well and he did yet again he made
the plays he needed to make. Uh. He obviously made
that brilliant uh you know identification of the Mike linebacker
that threw off the Packers and and allowed a really
good run to set up the field goals. So yeah,
I'm really excited about what the back half of the
season holds. They should win this week. Let's see how
(02:54):
they handled not being the underdog. But you know, you
very much, very much, I should be looking at six
and four as they head into to Atlanta next week.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
Yeah, I'm with you. So then I mean nine minutes
to go until the NFL trade deadline. I entered the
show at three o'clock today saying, every time we get
to within the final hour and they've done nothing, it
means they're doing nothing. And outside of letting Hndon Hooker go,
it appears that's what's going to be the case. Do
you have any issue with that?
Speaker 2 (03:18):
Not surprised at all? You know, listen, like a guy
like Jalen Phillips for instance, which you know a lot
of people thought, hey, maybe they could use him, although
the linebackers have been playing a lot better and the
sathy has been playing a lot better. Like you're not
the Eagles. You're not trying to just stack pieces because
you're thinking you're going to win the Super Bowl this year.
This is a team that thinks that can compete for
this division this year. They've got two big games against
(03:41):
the Bucks later this season. Crazier things have happened. They're
good enough, with enough breaks along the way to compete
for that spot at the end of November and in December.
And you don't want to mortgage your future. You don't
want to give away any young pieces that you've been
developing and done a good job drafting and developing for
once the last few years, everybody talks about the redundancy
(04:02):
because Rico Dawdle has had an incredible month or so, well,
you're gonna need Chewba Hubbard again at some point, and
Dabble's only on a one year deal, So I didn't
think it would have been wise to move Cuba, even
though he's kind of fallen into the background a little
bit here these last couple of weeks. So not surprised.
I mean, the NFL trade deadline has become really really relevant,
(04:24):
kind of like the Baseball trade deadline, so I always
equate it to that, and I kind of look at
the Red Sox this year my team, of course, where
you're kind of in that tweener mode like sure we
could make we can make the playoffs, and that would
be important for our franchise's development. But we don't need
to sell off, you know, we don't need to abandon
any assets along the way. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:42):
Nick Carboni, NBC Charlotte back with us for his regular
Tuesday appointment. Let's talk about the Hornets really quickly. They
are three and four, They've got the oho and six
Pelicans Tonight down in New Orleans at this Movie King Center.
Really good chance to get to four and four and
that would be fantastic, But also no LaMelo ball. The
last two go LaMelo ball. Last game. He won't play tonight.
Brandon Miller's been out since Night two. What are your
(05:03):
thoughts on where they are?
Speaker 2 (05:05):
I'm really concerned about LaMelo to have him out two
straight games with an ankle related you know, I know
they're calling it impingement, but obviously that's been the bugaboo
for him. His really now is the bulk of his career.
I know that they won easily without him against Utah.
I know they could win easily without him tonight against
New Orleans. But to me, like this is a guy
(05:27):
that's got to play sixty five seventy seventy five games,
so to be out back to back nights with something
ankle related this early in the season really concerns me.
Again with Brandon Miller, also was really excited to see
the jump he could make this year, and could still
make this year, but a rough start, and given the
(05:47):
old reevaluated in two weeks, so we know that can
go kind of in perpetuity. With some of these guys,
I don't know that that's going to be the case
with this but not something you want to see. On
the flip side, they did a really nice job with
the roster building the offseason. Colin Sexton has been a
fantastic addition, whether he's coming off the bench or playing
with the regulars. Ton K Nipple, I mean, they hit
on him and he keeps hitting. He's been unbelievable. To
(06:09):
have a Charlotte Hornet make NBA history night after night
with the amount of threes he's made to start his
career's fantastic. And Sion James has been great. I mean,
PAULK Brenner. I still think McNeely can contribute at some
point this season too. So love what they did in
the offseason with the draft. They should beat teams like Utah,
which they did. They should beat teams like New Orleans,
which they should. Tonight with al Lamela Ball.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
What was your Because you've been gone the last couple
of weeks, you weren't around for these conversations anyway, for
the opening of the season, and you know, the big
picture discussions about what people thought they could do and
what they could be. I think the official preseason over
under win total was twenty six and a half if
memory serves. What are your thoughts on, you know where,
how many wins you think this team could get if
they largely stay healthy together.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
Yeah, and that last part is important, obviously, but that's
why you're asking. I think i'd take the oprah on that.
I think they should absolutely be over that with you know,
some of the talent I mentioned Sexton coming in, Brandon
Miller taking the next step, LaMelo ball when he is
on the floor, he's been brilliant for the most part.
And then the addition of Konk Nipple who's clearly ready
to play here, Ryan Kulkbrenner, who on certain nights and
(07:17):
in certain matchups can absolutely play on both ends of
the floor. So I think you'd take the over on that.
All day. I'm still excited about what the season holds,
don't get me wrong, But to see LaMelo out two
nights in a row with an off night, I believe, yeah,
an off night again. I don't know a day it is, Kyle,
but to see him out two two times in a row,
the ankle.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
Anything is concerning Charlotte FC Big Game three coming up
on Friday. They forced Game three this past weekend. Listen,
Christian Kalina was a hero. This city, I know is
buzzing about this team a chance to advance. They've already
had to play once without Wilfrid Zahab, but they got
him back. What are your thoughts on their chances of
advancing on Friday?
Speaker 2 (07:57):
Yeah, and shout out to my partner over at WCNC,
Danielle Stein. She does a remarkable job covering Charlotte f See,
especially through this run, and she'll continue that this week. Listen.
It could have gotten it could have gotten really ugly
if they lost that game in the Bronx on Saturday
because of the way they played in the previous game
and that that you know, with everything involving Zaha prior
to that. But now you know you've got to give
(08:18):
them the advantage. Being back at the Bank on a
Friday night should be an incredible night. I think the
weather is going to beautiful, and we saw what that
looked like last year against Orlando in that game too.
But now it's for a trip to the Eastern Conference semifinals,
which isn't incredible. This franchise has just gotten better and
better and made more progress every single year. So I
(08:39):
expect that they'll go out and they'll be a kind
of complete product when it comes to finishing. I'd love
to see Toklamadi get active again and obviously Zaha and
and find a way to get it done, because you
know that's that's the next step for this franchise now
that they've clinched the top four seed home field advantage
in that round one to now advance.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
Buddy, it's great to hear your voice. Glad you're doing well.
Send our best to the baby to mama. We'll talk
to you next Tuesday.
Speaker 2 (09:07):
Appreciate it.
