Speaker 1 (00:02):
We got Paul being Cardi coming up here in this
segment and smoke doing his job back in the Chandler
Volta w FNZ studio said Hey, just so you know,
we got Paul on the line. And I said, oh,
we got Paul, and he said, no, no different Paul.
So now I got to how do we do it
for Paully buckets?

Speaker 2 (00:16):
Paul?

Speaker 3 (00:16):
How do I? How do I do the I don't
know because I feel like I'm going to butcher it.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
Let me tell you my wife, a native New Englander,
absolutely despises when I try to pull off a New
England accent, like I think she sometimes I think she
might want to divorce me when I try it. But uh,
I mean Paul, Paul Feinbaum gets Paul. If any you
want to give it a shot, you want to give
us the Paul be and Cardi version of Paul.

Speaker 3 (00:37):
He's a coach, so I would like to be like Paul.
Oh God, all right, turn your mic down.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
One of the nicest people in the business, one of
the great basketball minds of our generation, ESPN National recruiting director,
college basketball analyst, and former Horizon League Coach of the Year.
Our friend Paul being Cardi back with us for his
weekly Monday conversation.

Speaker 3 (00:58):
Paul, we are. We're glad to have you, brother. How
are thanks?

Speaker 2 (01:02):
Things are great, man, I've never had so many people
talk about.

Speaker 4 (01:06):
My first name like that.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
Yeah, but you get it, like, you know, Paul Finebaum
Southern cultural icon.

Speaker 3 (01:12):
We got a Paul.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
But like we're trying to come up with a New
England Northern version of that. So I'm sorry if you're offended.
We just you know, we're kind of silly around.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
Yeah, no, it was great.

Speaker 4 (01:22):
It was great.

Speaker 5 (01:22):
We'll come up with something.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
All right, we'll get there. Are you listen? You're a hoopet.
I know you're a junkie. You're always watching round ball.
Any part of you interested in Panthers in forty nine
ers on Monday Night football tonight?

Speaker 5 (01:35):
You know, I haven't.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
Looked at it, but I'm hoping the Panthers are going
to win.

Speaker 4 (01:38):
I haven't been following women.

Speaker 2 (01:40):
I have been following Mike Patriots ye back. Yeah, Mike
Brabel has got him back, Drake May. Yeah, so I'm
going for the pants tonight because I'm a homer when
it comes to localists for it.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
Okay, we appreciate that and you know what, I'm so
happy for you and Patriots Nation. I mean, it's for
an organization that went through such tough times for such
a long time to you know, have had to suffer
through the last couple of years. You know, something good
finally happened to the Patriots. I mean, it's it's been
so long. But anyway, I digress.

Speaker 3 (02:08):
Let's start.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
Let's start with recent happenings. How about Seton Hall knocking
off Will Wade in NC State earlier this afternoon out
at the Mali Classic. What are your thoughts on that loss?
I mean two to eleven in the net rankings or
net ratings, rather Seaton Hall gets to win.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
Yes, I mean that's the first time this season that
a ranked opponent.

Speaker 5 (02:30):
Lost to an unranked opponent.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
Yeah, but when you look at it, Seaton Hall being
in the Big East and NC State being in the
ACC is not a lot of difference even though NC
State was ranked.

Speaker 5 (02:45):
Look, Seaton Hall is coached.

Speaker 2 (02:47):
By Shaheen Halloway. I recruited Shaheen Halloway when he was
in high school. His team played just like his personality,
Kyle aggressive, tough, scrappy, and they were the more aggressive
team today against NC State. NC State looked like they
weren't I don't mean they weren't ready to play, but
it seemed like they were a step slow. They didn't

(03:09):
have that tenacity that.

Speaker 5 (03:11):
Will Wade's teams normally do and.

Speaker 2 (03:14):
That they've had this year. So they took a little
step back.

Speaker 5 (03:17):
No reason for concern.

Speaker 4 (03:18):
There's more games to play here in.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
Maui, and you learn a lot about yourself in Maui
because you.

Speaker 4 (03:23):
Have to play back to back to back.

Speaker 1 (03:26):
Okay, so you think no reason to be alarmed if
you're an NC State fan.

Speaker 5 (03:31):
No, not at all.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
And to be perfectly frank, I don't know if they're
really the twenty third team in the country.

Speaker 5 (03:38):
I think that's an early ranking based on.

Speaker 2 (03:41):
Maybe some other teams not playing so well early and
them playing pretty well. They've got a really nice roster.
I don't know if they're a ranked team. I mean,
he's got him there because he's.

Speaker 4 (03:50):
So good at what he does.

Speaker 2 (03:52):
But that wasn't an upset in my eyes today.

Speaker 3 (03:55):
Okay, all right, fair enough.

Speaker 1 (03:56):
Not a ton of let's say, high profile results for
Carolina the last couple of times out. They did struggle
a little bit against Navy Seth Tremble apparently calling a
player's only meeting, which isn't a bad thing obviously, But
after beating Kansas, they've knocked off Radford, North Carolina Central
and afore mentioned Navy. There a second ago, they got
Saint Bonni's tomorrow night before that big show down with

(04:18):
Michigan State on Thanksgiving. What are your thoughts early on
about the way that Carolina has gotten off to this start.

Speaker 2 (04:25):
I really like what Hubert Davis is doing because he
is so locked into his team and nothing more, meaning
that he keeps focused not so much on the pressure
of coaching at North Carolina on what other people's expectations are.

Speaker 4 (04:40):
He just focused on how.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
His team can incrementally get better as the season goes on.
He's got a great roster, He's got more size than
he's ever had in the last couple of years. Got
a stud with Caleb Wilson. That tremble you talked about it,
calling a player's only meeting.

Speaker 4 (04:58):
You know what that shows me?

Speaker 2 (04:59):
The leadership this team that there has been around. So
I like what he's doing. I like where they're going.
There'll be some ups and downs, but they're a top
three team. Inside the ACC this year, and I think
they're going to finish somewhere in the top twenty this season.

Speaker 1 (05:14):
All right, evaluate duke for me understanding that you know
already this season they faced Texas in the Dicky v
Classic here in Charlotte. They've beaten up on Western Carolina
and Army on Veterans Day, and obliterated n C State,
Niagara and Howard. Most recently, and they beat Kansas, but
they did so without Darren Peterson. They have they received
a you know, sufficient tests so far this season. How

(05:36):
do you think John Shire's young team has gotten off
to the start.

Speaker 2 (05:40):
I think they've done incredibly well because you've got to
remember what they did last year was phenomenal in terms
of their record, their their final four, their ACC championships.
So he's doing it almost with a new team. Now
they are studs. Cameron Booz is a stud he's polished,
he's so tough, he's so marty, so skilled. But the

(06:01):
other players have grown in their roles, you know, Isaiah Evans,
Darren Harris, you got Caleb Foster. I love what John
Shire is doing.

Speaker 4 (06:10):
With this team. Much like Hubert Davis Kyle.

Speaker 2 (06:12):
They're trying to find the identity, the rotation, and what
they're gonna be good at this.

Speaker 5 (06:17):
Season and what they need to work on.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
And you're gonna have some early season tests that are
gonna you know, you may take a step back like
NC State did today. I know Duke has a big
one coming.

Speaker 5 (06:28):
Up in December.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
Second at Michigan State.

Speaker 4 (06:32):
That's gonna be a.

Speaker 2 (06:33):
Test of toughness, both physical and mental. Michigan State playing
so well right now.

Speaker 4 (06:39):
We saw what they.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
Did to Kentucky, they beat Arkansas. That's gonna be a
telltale sign for Duke. Not so much if they win
the game, but how they play.

Speaker 4 (06:48):
In that game.

Speaker 1 (06:49):
Uh, Wake Forest, I can't you know not mention the
Deeks after what happened a couple of days ago, stunning
Memphis down in the Bahamas at the Baja Mar Championship.
It was the consolation game, but you know, a full
court pass, second and a half to go, they get
that crazy win. They're off to a four and two start.
They had the opportunity against Michigan, couldn't really get it

(07:10):
done or couldn't finish it off in overtime.

Speaker 3 (07:11):
Would have been a massive win for them.

Speaker 1 (07:13):
Obviously, this is a massive year for Steve Forbes similar
question the start that Wake's gotten off to and how
big was that win over Memphis.

Speaker 2 (07:21):
Oh, that was a huge win because you need something
tangible to make yourself feel good. Now Michigan would have
been a monumental win. And like you mentioned, it was
eighty five eighty.

Speaker 5 (07:31):
Four, I believe in overtime.

Speaker 2 (07:32):
Yeah, Texas Tech they lost. Think about this, Kyle. They
lost to Michigan and Texas Tech by a total of
two points.

Speaker 3 (07:40):
Yep.

Speaker 5 (07:41):
I mean his team is right there.

Speaker 4 (07:43):
This year.

Speaker 2 (07:44):
Dreke Harris has really come into his own. He's the
go to guy. The defense has always been good for
Wake Forest. In my opinion, it's really good this year.
They're scoring the ball at a high rate. They can
outscore you this year, and I believe that they'll be
able to stop fewer make stops when.

Speaker 4 (08:01):
They need to.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
They need to finish somewhere in the top five.

Speaker 5 (08:05):
Sixth in the ACC. ACC is much better this year.

Speaker 2 (08:09):
Everybody talked about it last year being down, and it was,
but with the influx of talent in terms of freshmen,
this conference is back and it's back strong.

Speaker 5 (08:20):
But Wake four est to be in the NCAA Tournament.

Speaker 4 (08:23):
I think they have to.

Speaker 2 (08:23):
Finish fifth at sixth, at the very bottom of that conference,
so to speak.

Speaker 3 (08:29):
To get a bit, let's talk Hornets for a second.

Speaker 1 (08:32):
You tagged me last night a couple of tweets about
the Hornets and Conkainnipple. They've unfortunately lost six straight. LaMelo
and Brandon set out against the Hawks. Load management. Brandon
just got back from injury, They're clearly still managing Lamello's ankle,
and last night again they lose to the Hawks in
a tight one. Kind of a frustrating to me anyway,
frustrating played down the stretch in terms of shot selection

(08:53):
and things like that. You feel free to give your
thoughts on it. But once again, man Conkinnipple twenty eight
point six rebounds, three assists, seven threes last night. I mean, Paul,
I feel like a broken record. This kid is just unreal.

Speaker 2 (09:07):
Yeah, I tagged you in that post last night. When
he came into the draft, I thought he could be
a next type of Kyle Korver.

Speaker 5 (09:14):
Yeah too, that post is looking pretty good right now.

Speaker 1 (09:18):
Well, I mean, can he be better than Kyle Korver
at this like? Are we looking at a player who's
got a higher ceiling than that.

Speaker 2 (09:24):
No, I don't know because his what's going to happen.
It hasn't happened yet, but it's going to happen. The
NBA's Guiding Report is going to put even more of
an emphasis on him as the season goes on. You know,
your rookie year, you really have to keep doing it
for teams to respect you. They respect kon k Nipple,
but they don't fear him yet, but they're gonna.

Speaker 5 (09:44):
Fare him soon.

Speaker 2 (09:45):
When you look at the team that they put on
the court last night, you mentioned it without LaMelo, without
Brandon Miller, without Ryan Kockbrenner, and a chance to win
back to back. It was a disappointing loss in terms
of they played well enough to win. They didn't score
down the stretch. They didn't have LaMelo and Brandon. You

(10:06):
talked about the last shot shot selection. Charles Lee's trying
to draw up every conceivable play he can for Contentebull
to get a shot off or call him Sexton. When
you have those two guys.

Speaker 5 (10:18):
In bridges, that's who you have to go to at the.

Speaker 4 (10:21):
End of games.

Speaker 2 (10:22):
I'm really high on this franchise.

Speaker 5 (10:24):
I really am, because they.

Speaker 2 (10:25):
Do everything the right way, and everybody throws around the
word process. Process takes patience, it takes a lot of time,
and it takes a.

Speaker 5 (10:34):
Lot of focus.

Speaker 2 (10:35):
This group is focused. They're fun to watch, and we still, Kyle,
we still haven't seen them all together over an extended.

Speaker 4 (10:42):
Period of time.

Speaker 3 (10:43):
No, they haven't.

Speaker 1 (10:44):
But I mean at four and thirteen you're saying long term,
you like what the organization is doing, but I mean
short to intermediate. How much does a feig and thirteen
start change or outlook for the rest of this year?

Speaker 2 (10:54):
Not much, not much.

Speaker 4 (10:56):
You just say that seventeen games, we're.

Speaker 2 (10:58):
Playing eighty two eighty two games. You take it week by.

Speaker 5 (11:03):
Week, month by months.

Speaker 4 (11:04):
They can get on a hot streak.

Speaker 2 (11:06):
They got some games coming at home. It really is
about putting a winning streak together. Obviously, you want to
stamp losing streaks and put winning streaks together.

Speaker 5 (11:15):
I don't see the players being down at all when
they play.

Speaker 2 (11:18):
There's great effort, they're competitive, they're tuned into what Charles
Lee is telling them.

Speaker 4 (11:24):
They turn the ball over too much in.

Speaker 2 (11:25):
My opinion, and their defense isn't even close to where
it needs to be. And again, sometimes that has to
do with personnel.

Speaker 5 (11:33):
A Cockbrenner in the game. He's a great defender. If
Brandon Miller.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
And LaMelo Ball just decide, you know what, we're going
to really try to guard, and we're gonna because we
can score.

Speaker 4 (11:44):
This team can score points.

Speaker 2 (11:45):
I don't think they're a team that you have to
worry about on the offensive end. Went healthy to me.
Turnovers have to get lower and the defense has to
get tighter for this team to get up to forty
wins thirty five wins.

Speaker 1 (11:59):
I hope you're right. It's always a pleasure, brother. Thank
you for the time. Enjoy the games tonight. We'll talk
to you next Monday, all right, KB, Thank you, Bud.
