Speaker 1 (00:00):
Roman Harper, two time Pro Bowler, super Bowl champion, former
Alabama Crimson Tide, New Orleans Saint and Carolina Panther. These
days an SEC Network analyst, and he's got the NFL
Legends Second Act podcast with FBI agent Peanut Tillman. Our man.
Roman Harper stays busy and he's back with us here
on a Wednesday, which is, by the way, is where

(00:20):
he'll be throughout the football season here on the show.
Roman Harper, what's going on?

Speaker 2 (00:25):
What's up? Kyle? I'm actually in the Green and Regulation
right now up here in Functionville, Alabama. I would also
say I got a correct you. But Peanut is no
longer with the FBI.

Speaker 1 (00:34):
Really, Okay, I don't know everybody.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
I mean, I mean you told everybody that he is
an FBI agentcy Now, No, he's a former former bro.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
You think you think I broke that news to people.
There was like multiple massive Instagram accounts tweet posting about
it last week. Can I see that?

Speaker 2 (00:54):
No? I didn't. I'm glad he got out when he did.
Everybody's supposed to know.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
You know, I've told I've told this story before that
we don't have to get into it. But the funny
thing is like I got a fraternity brother who's in
the FBI and he went to like SWAT Team boot
camp with Peanut Tillman and the FBI. And we got
to talking one day and he's like, I know Peanut,
and I'm like, wow, what a small world. So anyway,
it is a small world, all right. So it's good
to have you back.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
Brother.

Speaker 1 (01:20):
What are you doing in Alabama? You squeezing out the
last drops of summer? What are you doing?

Speaker 2 (01:25):
Man? I'm actually I got a little speaking engagement I
got to do tonight. That's a little Red Elson Club
and uh, you know some alumni stuff. Man, they like
to you know, whenever they invite me, I'll try and
come up here and show out a little bit. Just
tuck a little ball and it's good man. You know Alabama,
you know we love our own nuts.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
Brummen, you're still with us? Are you breaking up a
little bit? Hopefully you're still there with us? Roman Harper
hanging out on the hot line here, So like, do
y'all start? Yeah, we got you, I got you?

Speaker 2 (01:49):
Oh yeah, Okay, it's in the mountains too, so okay, sorry.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
Oh no, The Alabama mountains are beautiful I've driven through there.
They're beautiful, So I'm glad you said that. Do y'all
start every like, every official function and end every prayer
with roll tide?

Speaker 2 (02:03):
Like?

Speaker 1 (02:03):
Is that how everybody does it in Alabama?

Speaker 2 (02:06):
It's not that bad. But you know, it depends on
It depends on whose family you at too. Now some
families a lot more deeper than me. And I was
being honest.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
Blessing the meal ending with a roll tide?

Speaker 2 (02:17):
What?

Speaker 1 (02:18):
But in all seriousness, like, what is the attitude in
your neck of the woods about the tide right now?
After a nine and three season?

Speaker 2 (02:25):
You know number one college that last year is not
the standards. I think they understand that. You know, I
was just on campus recently and I love the attitude
of these players. I think coach Blue, the strinth head
strength coach, has really stepped his game up and really
trying to steer this ship in the right direction. Kaylon
de Bordon, it just seems like everybody's more on the
same they. You know, it's something to be said about

(02:46):
being all in but a little bit heavier. I think
that was last year's team. Man. They lost those games
that had nothing to do with talent. They had all
to do with finishing, coming in against the ryme attitude,
the right approach about going about their business. I think
going through the same last year that want to be
more ready to do more damage this year. I'm really
looking forward to the SEC is gonna be tough. They

(03:07):
got Alazam's got a heck of a schedule, you know,
road schedule and home schedule. But at the end of
the day, you're Alabama, So nobody's gonna feel sorry for you.
I think everybody understands that, and it's just gonna come
with the territory. And I'm really looking forward to Kaylen
the Boord and year two. King w Mack. I sat
down and talked to him. He's doing some things defensively.
I think there's just gonna be in a better position
defensive because you understand what you can and can't get

(03:28):
away with. You know how teams attack you in the
previous year. You'll take that into consideration when you go
back out there. Because everybody plays the same team and
so knowing that, all right, what do they do that work?
Because they're gonna try and do those same things. They
might not line up in it, but they're gonna do
those same things that they have success with. So I
think another year in the system will give all these

(03:48):
guys a lot of benefit and they will be better. Also,
having coach Grubb of the offensive coordinator coming back from
Seattle will be another big time boost for this offense.

Speaker 1 (03:58):
So let's talk about South Carolina for a second. They lost,
I believe, and I know you're deep in the film.
You're back at it for the most part. You and
your boy Cole Kuberlick, who stood me up this week.
By the way, Tom, I'm mad at him. He but
in all seriousness, I love y'all show. And you know
I was thinking about South Carolina. I was talking to
folks today. You know it's Virginia Tech South Carolina in
Atlanta to open up the season, Shane Biemer against his

(04:20):
alma mater, all that stuff. They have an electric quarterback,
and they have talent. They might have the best edge
rusher in the league in Dylan Stewart. Nick Harbor is
a great athlete, but they lost seven starters off that
team last year. A lot of it defensively, guys like
Nicki Minwori and Jordan Birch and guys like that, Like
they've got the quarterback, So that is the biggest piece.

(04:42):
But there are a lot of folks saying we don't
think they can overcome all they lost from last year.
Where do you fall in that conversation.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
I'm kind of with that just because I'm traditionally I'm
not used to seeing South Carolina's be able to plug
and replace as back right and give us too. It's
a great player, but remember you only had six and
a half stacks. A lot of it was benefiting because
he had talking him away TJ. Sanders Saunders in the middle.
You also had the Kyle the other edge player that
had Kyle Kanard. Like, all these guys were game wreckers,

(05:14):
nick him men warring the back also the middle linebackers
Night that can't transfer over from Georgia deck Like, all
these guys are a big time playmate. South Carolina won
a lot of games defensively last year. And so yes,
they have the quarterback. And everybody loves to talk about
quarterback because once you got a quarterback, you got a chance,
and so you don't worry about that now it's right,
do we have the pieces around him to help him

(05:34):
be successful. He became a much better player from the
beginning of the season to the end of the season.
That's why everybody's so excited. And he should be at
South Carolina, like you gotta dude, And so do they
have the enough wide receivers around him to give him
a chance to be great? And then also can they
protect him? And you lost Rocket Sanders, who all of
a sudden came back to form last year as well
at running back, So who's going to be the running back?

(05:57):
Do they have enough offensive line talent to protect his
so he's not just running for his life because last
year he was just kind of playing a little bit
in that fine, but I also need him to stand
in the pocket and deliver to the wide receivers whoever's
going to step up. And then defensively, how do they
get these guys? They had so much production on that
side of the ball, it's just really hard to say, like, Okay,
South Carolina, you just got it. And you know they

(06:18):
got to play some teams too, so that you know
nobody's gonna give South Carolina a game. And you know
last year they lost a couple that they probably could
have won and wanted to win, like that LSU game.
You know that's one they definitely want back, and you know,
it's just one of those things. And Alabama game is
another one that they should have had but they just
didn't win it.

Speaker 1 (06:37):
So Texas was voted by a wide margin to win
this conference. I believe ninety six first place votes if
I'm not mistaken, Arch mount one hundred. I know, I
think it was more than a hundred, but you know,
it was ninety six points for Texas. Then Georgia had
forty four. So like this was a wide margin that
I think Texas was voted to win the conference. There
is a ton of belief in Arch Manning. There's there's

(06:59):
tape out there. I see it just in terms of potential,
but you know there's a lot that we still need
to see from Arch. They've they've spent money. I think
Sarks a good coach, But are you a deep believer
in what Texas has coming back? In totality?

Speaker 2 (07:12):
I got Texas in the SEC championship game. I don't
know if they win it, but I do think I
just like what Sark and those guys are doing. And
once you go on that campus, you understand it. Dude,
they got everything, So how they handle that part of
it will determine their success. But Sark's gonna be good.
He's gonna be a great play call. The arc is
gonna be good. But let's talk about what they lost.

(07:34):
They lost their top three wide receivers as far as production.
They also they also have to replace their whole offensive
line pretty much and their defensive line. So their defensive line,
they had some dudes too. And that's another team that
won a lot of games because they had the number
one or number two defense in the country last year
and they didn't give up big plays. And so when

(07:54):
you lose the Jim Thorper winner and Johnny Baron, who
is you know, the means the best defense back in
the country. You also lost to Andrew mccouba, the transfer
from Clemson who went in the second and third round
as a safety. You got some guys to replace. And
so if you give up scores defensively, this Texas team
is not the same as we saw last year. But

(08:15):
Arch Manning just gives everybody a lot of hope. And
you know, he's a sexy pick. Right now. I'm not
mad at it at all.

Speaker 1 (08:21):
Are you buying Georgia? I just had an angry Georgia
fan tell me that Texas is overrated. They were voted
second the conference are what are you buying Georgia.

Speaker 2 (08:29):
I'm not buying. Well, I mean I'm gonna buy Georgia
because Kirby Smart's there. But as far as what they're doing,
you know, I just look, Kyle, I've been covering the
SEC since twenty twenty and when they got there, Bro,
they had dudes. They had Jordan Davis, they had Jaylen
Wyatt the other defensive tackle. They had Jalen Carter coming
off the bench. They had Nolan Smith, they had the

(08:50):
Kobe Dean. You know, they had another linebacker that went
to Green Bay in the first round. You know, they
had multiple safeties, Malachi Starts. They lost seven dudes off
the defense last year, included mikel Williams, who didn't even
get no burn at first and so you know who's
their best guy along with Dalen Walker. So how do
they replace? Continue to plug and replace? That is not
so much a Georgia problem as much as it's a

(09:10):
college football problem right now that you know, Georgia went
out and got some wide receivers, but you know, the
coach and Mike Bobo still got to call it and
the quarterbacks got to be able to deliver the football
on time, and we saw versus Notre Dame. When they
need to stop the run, they didn't and when they
need to protect the quarterback they didn't. And so you
got to get these things short up. But Georgia, they're Georgia,
and a step back for me is still nine wins.

(09:32):
But still that's not where Georgia wants to be. Can
they be in the playoffs? Yes, but you know, will
they will they be able to outlast LSU? Who if
LSU wins the first game versus Cleansing, watch out.

Speaker 1 (09:43):
Speaking of order of finish, if I had told you
two years ago that going into the twenty twenty five season,
Vanderbilt would be voted to finish higher than Florida, Tennessee,
Ole Miss and Auburn, I don't know that you would
have believed me.

Speaker 2 (09:57):
Now.

Speaker 1 (09:57):
Clark Lee, once upon a time promised to make Vanderbilt
the premier football destination in the Southeastern Conference. Last year,
they were tough, they were pretty good, they got the
quarterback back. They think they're a better football team, but
they're not sneaking up on anybody This year. My guys
are going to see him in Week two. What do
you think of Vandy after what they did last year?

(10:18):
Can they improve upon it this year?

Speaker 2 (10:20):
I hate to be a repeat of Fender Kyle, but
they got quarterbacks, so they got a chance. You know,
Mark Lee is not going to be calling the defense
this year. I don't like that. I thought he did
an excellent job of playing break down defense with them
and call in the game because calling the game is
his skills. It's not like Madden. Everybody's just going to
do right. You gotta have field. You got to understand
when you want to get them and then play a

(10:41):
little bit more passive and expect the offense to make
a mistake. They did a great job of that last year,
especially like versus Virginia Tech. You know, they finally won
a game late that they normally traditionally have never been
able to do that. So you know, with Diego Paves,
you're going to have a chance. But they got a
tough schedule and we're gonna have to see. Man. I
still got Bandy like just getting six games, and I

(11:02):
think Florida is a team that will be better, you know,
but that goes on DJ Lagway. If Lagway's healthy. They
got a tamp. If he's not healthy, you know that
team is not even close to being where they want
to be. And it's just so interesting because a game
or two early is going to make you so much
more desperate later and right now the way the SEC
stacked up, man, dude, that those top three or four

(11:25):
teams are going to be what they're going to be.
But really and truthfully, teams one through eight can all
beat anybody, depend on when and where you play them
and who's that actually available for you to go? Kyle,
I gotta say this too well. I just monster this
d thank.

Speaker 1 (11:39):
You you matched the drive? Is that what you said?

Speaker 2 (11:43):
Mask? Bro?

Speaker 1 (11:44):
Oh my, how's the round going? By the way, how
far in are you? He's in the golf cart, he's moving.

Speaker 2 (11:53):
Yeah. Can you hear me? Now?

Speaker 1 (11:54):
Do y'all have cell towers in Alabama?

Speaker 2 (11:57):
Dude? I don't know, Bro. I'm up on a mountain,
bro in Huntsville, Due. I've never been up here. It's
called the edges, the ledges, I'm sorry, and we are
out here, dude. I can see like the Space Center.
I can see where they like fire off rockets and
testuff at like I can see the whole I can
see everything, and so it's a little bit different. But
I did shoot a forty three on the front, and
we're gonna see about this back when I got to

(12:17):
add it up, it's probably not a forty three because
I had a freaking on a par five. I hit one,
ob so I had an eight. So you know, I
count you've.

Speaker 1 (12:25):
Been putting in the work. That's that's impressive stuff, all right,
Roman Harper with us here hanging out of the hotline.
Two quick things. I'll let you get back to your round.
I don't know if you heard or not, but the
Cleveland Browns were in town today for a joint practice.
Your guy, your guy, Bryce Young look good like even
the Clemson excuse me, even the Cleveland guys we had
one on earlier, said he was really impressed with Bryce.
The offense had a good day, Roman, Like, I know

(12:48):
they bought back your loyalty when they brought him in.
How are you optimistic that they could take a big
jump this year?

Speaker 2 (12:54):
What is a big jump? Eight wins?

Speaker 1 (12:56):
I think so eight to nine wins, yeah, eight to nine,
eight to ten wins would be yeah.

Speaker 2 (13:01):
I could see that. You know, they're in a weaker division.
It depends on what New Orleans things to do too.
You know, Tampa's gonna be good. We got to see
what Atlanta does with Bijon and you know, the young quarterback,
and if they're ready to take that next step, that'd
be another interesting thing to see. But they just you know,
you gotta win some games early to give you confidence
to win them late. To me, like that's that's what

(13:21):
it's gonna come down to. If they drop some games
early then maybe we think they probably should have won,
then you're gonna lose games late. So they got to
find ways to win. Because nobody on this team besides
JJ Danton who's only snapping, has ever won anything. And
so like, how do you win? How do you learn
how to win? You got to go out there and
do it. And so that's what I'm a little bit
concerned with. But what Dave Canalison this team is trying

(13:44):
to build, I'm buying it. Like they're getting the right pieces.
I love where everybody thought they'd get a defensive guy
and they went and got the wide receiver. I love
that move just because, like, dude, like know your identity
and go get it. And if you want to supply
or support this first round quarterback, go get his dude,
and they went and did that.

Speaker 1 (14:02):
They did all right. Last thing, stay in the South.
The reports out of New Orleans are not great. They
still have some some talent. We all know that. But
the quarterback situation again just via reports. I'm not there.
Maybe you've stopped in, but it doesn't sound encouraging. What
are you hearing?

Speaker 2 (14:18):
Uh that I just hit another bringing regulation? All right,
but no, no serious business, Okyn, dude. You know it's
so tough. I don't think they're you know, we're trying
to see if they're going to hit the reset. But
the one thing the Thanks haven't done is hit the reset.

(14:40):
But since they love there, they haven't taken their time
and tried to build. And I think they try to
do that and let the thing kind of play out.
We're going to see how I go. I'm just excited that,
you know, I want to see what Spencer Rather could do.
I want to see what the Tyler Shuck can do.
I want to see these guys. I want to I
want to see it. Maybe if Hayin wins a job,
I don't know. Actually, just as long as you're competing,

(15:01):
then you're going to get better, and that's what they're
trying to do. They're trying to build an environment to
make sure you go out there and compete. But I
have not. I was supposed to go down to training
camp two weeks ago, but I actually had to work
the SEC media day, so I couldn't go down. I'm
gonna try and go down at least before the season,
see if I can take these guys out and what
everybody's saying about the team.

Speaker 1 (15:19):
All right, Live from the golf course. Harper Gilmore joining
us on the Bodyworks Plus Guest hot Line. I got
to give Jack credit for that one. He wants me
to call you, Harper Gilmore on the way out the door.
Hit him straight, Yeah, hit him straight, buddy. We appreciate you.
We'll talk to you when you get home.

Speaker 2 (15:34):
Thanks Colin. Because I'm in Alabama. Role Tide
