Speaker 1 (00:00):
Both athletic directors from app State and Charlotte have joined
the show thus far today, and I love them both,
but they pale in comparison to our buddy Roman Harper,
two time Pro Bowler, Super Bowl champion, former safety for
the Alabama Crimson Tide, New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers SEC
Network analyst with a brand new contract extension at the
Four Letter Network. Roman Harper is back with us for

(00:21):
his Wednesday conversation. Have I hyped you up enough? What's
going on?

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Brother?

Speaker 1 (00:24):
How are you well?

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Yeah? Man, I appreciate that. I'm feeling good. Cow and
so I just cut on the TV and looked at
the news. It's just way too much stuff going on.
I should just not watch TV today.

Speaker 1 (00:34):
Oh yeah, turn turn that off, Just turn on film,
turn on some music, literally anything else.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
Cut it off. Yeah, I cut the team on. It's
way too much going on out there, all right? Yeah? Man,
appreciated though, dog, how you been?

Speaker 1 (00:45):
I'm good. Congrats on the extension. By the way, they
must like the work you're doing over there at the
SEC Network.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
Uh yeah, you know, it's kind of like football, you know,
they always want to keep you as long until they
can find somebody to replace you for cheaper or somebody younger. Yeah,
until that, until that time, hits. I guess yeah, I'm there.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
Okay, I get it now, and I'll actually uh, I'll
stay there for a second sec Nation. All the coverage
this weekend? Where are you headed? Where are you guys
going to be?

Speaker 2 (01:13):
We will be in Atlanta for Tennessee versus Syracuse in
the Mercedes whatever they call it, the Mercedes Dome. Yeah,
New Orleans is a super dome, so yeah, I don't
know what they call Mercedes little thing, so they're not little,
but Mercedes in Atlanta, yep. And then we'll also be
covering your boys on Sunday as well as South Carolina

(01:34):
versus Virginia Tech. I would love to know your opinion
on that game as well. Well.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
You and I have we we haven't chatted much this week,
so I have not told you I will see you
in Atlanta on Sunday.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
I will.

Speaker 1 (01:45):
I will be there, so I'm excited, bringing Pops, me
and Dad are going to jump in the truck and
head down Sunday morning. My thoughts are I've started to
get that fan tangling that I think the Hokies are
winning the football game. I've started to get that fluttering
feeling in my heart that and it's not it's not
as reflux or anything like that. I'm starting to get
that feeling that the Hokies are going to win this game.
I think South Carolina's defense can be taking advantage of

(02:08):
early in the season as they rebuild it. And you know,
I think that the new offensive coordinator at Virginia Tech
can help Kyen Drones and company put points on the board.
So there is some heart at play here. I admit
that that's the fan in me, but I believe that
they can go down there and win the game.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
Yeah. I just watching watching, going back and watching Virginia
Tech last year. They were just so minuscule in the
passing game and not really just always Karen Drones and
lack of ability. It was more like just conconceptually scheme
ban Yeah, scheme wise, it was so minuscule, was not
really attacking anybody down the field. And I know they

(02:46):
had a whole bunch of what looked like at times
walk on that wide receiver. They were not deep at
that position, and so yeah, it didn't look great at all.
So I think a change of the guarded offensive coordinated
was big time for Virginia Tech. It's always interesting too,
because the first game, when you haven't seen somebody, what
will it be, right, You kind of got to prepare

(03:07):
for a lot of different things. I'm not mad at
that pick. I thought that game would be a very
tight game for South Carolina early. Then I watched the
film and I was so unimpressed with Virginia Tech. I think, uh, yeah,
I like South Carolina a lot more after watching last
year's State. But you did remind me like, Okay, they
did make the Swinton off of the coordinator, so maybe

(03:28):
I wasn't that wrong on my initial thought.

Speaker 1 (03:30):
No, no, no, they went from Tyler Bowen who's now
is now the offensive line coach at Ohio State, to
Philip Montgomery, who's the former Auburn OC and the former
head coach at Tulsa. They're going to open it up.
They're going to open it up a lot more so.
I don't know, we'll see. I'm just excited to be there.
I am curious though, your thoughts on the first game
you mentioned, just because we do have some, you know,
plenty of upstate New York folks that have made their

(03:52):
way down to the South Syracuse fans in the audience.
I give Syracuse a real chance against Tennessee on Saturday.
What do you think?

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Uh? You know, I said that too two weeks ago,
and then I did a deeper dive into Syracuse. I've
been watching nothing with Syracuse film and you guys call
me an sec homework you want to, but just look
up the stats. S Syracuse was god awful and stopping
the run last year. Kyle, Okay, you know, here we go.
I'll give you one that I'll use on Saturday. All right.

(04:21):
I won't give you all of them, but I'll give
you this one. Syracuse was allowed five point six yards
per run in the first half of games last year.
That puts them ninth worse in the country and actually
the worst, the number one worst team, dead last and
all power for teams in the nation as far as

(04:43):
first yard first half yards allowed per carry and the
reason why the number goes down the second half because
Syracuse played so much up tempo throwing the ball all
over the ballpark last year with Kyle mccor that the offense.
The other offense said, Hey, I'm as well play fast
break off too, so they would run the ball less.
But I'm telling you they didn't stop anybody last year.

(05:05):
And the way that Tennessee goes about their offense, they
think everybody thinks they want to spread you out to
throw it, but they really spread you out to get
the advantage of the numbers count and the box in
the run, and then they run the ball so effectively.
That's the one thing Tennessee has always done well under
Josh Eipel since he got to Tennessee is run the
football for one hundred and something two hundred yards a game.

(05:26):
I think that will be the advantage for Tennessee. And
I know everybody wants to talk about Joey Aguilar because
we love talking about quarterbacks when we don't know anything.
But you know, if he hits one or two deep throws,
that's great, But it's going to be all about the
running back and the running game of Tennessee. For me,
that gets Tennessee to win.

Speaker 1 (05:43):
Yeah, and listen, I think that's a fair point. I
still don't trust Aguilar on that stage, but we'll have
to wait on either. Yeah, We'll have to wait and
see what happens that You're right. I mean, I give
Syracuse a chance, but I think it's still more likely
that Tennessee wins the game. Roman Harper hanging out with
us on the hot line. Now, since you've been in
the film, and I've personally witnessed Roman Arper in his
film study, he is diligent. This man has like multiple

(06:03):
iPads going multiple screens. He's all in the film. What
does the film tell you about LSU and Clemson coming
up on Saturday Night?

Speaker 2 (06:13):
That that LSU on paper looks really like a great matchup,
But I still think Clemson is the better team. It's
that Clemson, Brian Kelly, those guys, they haven't been able
to win that first game. I don't think this is
the one for them as well. And that doesn't mean
that they are seasons over if you're LSU. But I

(06:35):
just really I just think Clemson's legit. And the one
thing the mismatch that I continue to hear. You know,
when I listen to LSU, all the beat writers and
the people that follow that program day in and day out,
they always talk about where the offense looks great, the
defense is getting the upper hand, you know, the defense
is getting better. You know, nus s myire this. But

(06:57):
then the one thing that they always saved. The problem
is the offensive line. Offensive line has to continue to
jail old. Line needs to do this a little bit better.
And that's the one problem that you cannot have when
you play against Tenny. Clemson, all right, they got a kid, TJ. Parker,
who's going to be first one or two round defensive lineman,
but he led the team in tacks last year. And

(07:18):
they also bring back the other very disruptive kids, Peter Woods,
who is you played defensive end naturally a defensive tackle,
and now because of they got a little bit more depth,
they're more healthy this year, he's going to go back inside.
I think he's way disruptive, a much more disruptive player
than he is producted as far as the numbers are concerned.

(07:39):
But both really really talented guys, and if you can't
block them, then you won't beat Clemson. And that's one
thing that I know about Clemson that they do really
well is get after the quarterback. If I'm LSU, I'm
going four wide receivers, I'm taking advantage of my fourth
wide receiver versus any linebacker or fourth dB that they
bring in versus versus you to try and cover it.

(08:01):
Because if he was that good, he'd be your first cornerback.
So I go again, Tim one on one and I'm
spitting the ball out fast, which means I'm throwing it fast.
I can't hold on to the ball exactly.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
How ugly will Alabama and Florida State be? What's been
your prediction this week to everybody in the office about
how bad Alabama beats up on Florida State.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
Uh, I'll be honest with you, Kyle. I'm not gonna
sit up here and tell everybody how great Alabama is
this year, even though I do believe in Alabama and
I do think they win this game pretty handedly. What
is handedly I guess two touchdowns. It's on the road.
It's to be a great environment somewhere Alabama's never been before.
In dope Campbell. I'm really looking forward to it, at

(08:39):
least watching it on TV. But Alabama has to They
have to treat Florida State. And I know you can't
treat Florida State like just another team. But Alabama has
bigger goals than beating Florida State and Florida State this year.
They must understand that Alabama did not lose games last year, Kyle,
because of lack of talent. They lost games because they
didn't know how to handle adversity. They didn't know how

(09:01):
to handle success as well, And so whenever you those
two things matter, you can't go out there and set
the world on fire. First half versus Georgia, then all
of a sudden let them come back, end up winning it.
You beat Georgia and then you lose the Vanderbilt Then
later on the season, late in the season, when you
got the playoffs right in front of you, you beat
LSU at LSU where everybody says how hard it is

(09:22):
to play there, and then you go on the road
and lose to Oklahoma. You got to learn had the
ebbs and flows of a football season be more mature
and handle that. I expect them to do that in
year two of Kaitlin Debor. I expect Alabama to look
good versus Florida State. But I also know that losing
jam Mintler the running back a couple a week or

(09:43):
so ago does not help them. So figuring these things
out offensively will be really interesting to see. I can't
wait to watch. Honestly, and defensively, they should be better
in year two under Kane Womack, because you know, Kyle.
The thing that I loved about being in a defense
more than one year or more more than one season.
It's not like I learned the playbook. More is that

(10:03):
I knew what I could get away with. More like
I know I can cheat on this one. I know
teams are trying to attack the year where the weakness
is at. What am I looking for in each every
kind of play and position that I'm playing because I
know the defense just a little bit more, not the playbook,
but actually what I'm trying to get accomplished?

Speaker 1 (10:21):
Roman, What do you let me pivot to the pro
game for a minute here. The big news today, of course,
in Charlotte, is that the Panthers dealt Adam Thielen back
home to the Minnesota Vikings and all that. Yeah, yeah,
And in terms of like the transaction itself, the trade
value chart, all that stuff, Panthers netted a fourth round pick.
I think it's even Vikings fans are you know Carolina

(10:42):
won the trade? They had the leverage, that's fine, But
what does it signal to you about their faith in
Bryce the wide receiver room, which is still otherwise pretty young.
They didn't keep Hunter Renfro on the roster by the way,
So Feeling's gone, no Hunter renfro and they're going with
the young group out there at wide receiver. What do
you think of that?

Speaker 2 (11:01):
I say that means they got a lot more faith
in Cocher than what you initially thought, because Cocher is
going to be the guy that has to do what
Adam Thieler did. I don't. I'm not gonna say I
love it, and it's probably because I actually got to
meet Adam a little bit. He was really really starting
to sink into this community, and so anytime you had
to uproot somebody, you know, after being here like this

(11:22):
and being productive as he was with Bryce last year.
Very very interesting trade. But hey, it's the NFL, right,
so it stands for not for long. So I don't
know if I love it yet. And that's only because,
oh my gosh, what's his name? The wide receiver from
South Carolina? Kyle is my name? Yeah, Exaberly get sorry,

(11:46):
I'm in college football mode so much. You know, xcel Man,
you know, he's the one that has to take the
next step because without Adam Feeling, who's the lead dog
in the room. Who's the lead dog? And so that
decision has to be made, and we haven't seen enough
from Tetoro McMillan facts he say like, Okay, he is

(12:08):
the first round top wide receiver that we exactly what
we drafted him for. I just love a veteran presence
in any in any room. Like, I don't think people
understand how good it was to have a player of
you know, Jason Levant's caliber when I was here at Carolina,

(12:28):
or Jericho Katre's caliber, where he's not going to blow
you away with so many things. Man, he's just a
great veteran presence in a room, and guys know how
to go about their business, how to go to work
every single day. I think that's another thing that can
be heard. And also just hey, man, they've been in
so many situations where they know how to get out
of it. When guys are covering him this way, what's

(12:51):
the thing or technique that you can do to like
get yourself open. Like that's how he's able to stay
open and get open the way he does. It's because
he's just played that much ball. And it's some to
be said about just knowing the game when these young
guys they don't know the game yet.

Speaker 1 (13:05):
Before I let you go. You and I have shared
the microphone a lot together over the years, and JJ
Jansen and I have recently shared the mic together a lot.
We called a game on Friday night. So lo and behold.
I open up the old Twitter app or whatever it
is X and I see Kart talk with Roman Harper,
and I got listeners telling me you got to ask
Roman about the conversation with JJ. In particular, what's being

(13:26):
picked up on is that Roman Harper said he did
not love the way the coaching staff handled things in
the week leading up to the Super Bowl?

Speaker 2 (13:33):
Is that actually true? True?

Speaker 1 (13:35):
Why is that?

Speaker 2 (13:37):
Well, because all of a sudden, I wasn't playing on
third downs, they made a change, and that would had
not been the case all year long. And while all
of a sudden in the biggest game, we're going to
try and make a switch out where now Trey Boston's
playing on third downs versus where I've all played every
third down all year long, unless until I got hurt
in the week before. And we're going to do this

(13:58):
right before the jubebow. Not only that, but you don't
even talk to me about it until the Thursday before
the game. And so my biggest regret is actually playing
in that game, because I told him, I'm like, well,
if you guys want to do it that way, then
you guys should let Trey play the whole game. No
disrespect to Trade. It actually had nothing to do with trade.
It's just about how you go about your business and
the way you go about it is all of a sudden,

(14:18):
you want to do something in front of the biggest game.
Why are you trying to make a change. Not only that,
but then it makes Kurt Coleman go play strong safety
where he had just had nine interceptions all that free safety.
So you're moving one of the more productive players you've
had in the secondary to a totally different position in
the biggest game of the year. Who does that? Why

(14:40):
would you do that? It doesn't make any sense to me,
I asked him about it. Look at least Steve Wilks
tried to I'm not gonna stay began, but he yeah,
pretty much really royally really wanted me to play in
the game. Because I'm like, if y'all are gonna do this,
then I won't play. And we lost the game, and
I think it's all that. I mean, the coaches didn't
play by coaches didn't help us out. I mean, offensively

(15:02):
we didn't play well, and defensively we could have been
had a couple of different plays, but overall we didn't
do out. We didn't put our best foot forward, and
I didn't like what the coaches did. I stay on
that two fans too. I stand on those two feet
all day, and I'm not the only one that feels
that way. Wow.

Speaker 1 (15:17):
Did you ever talk to Sean McDermot about it after
the Factor?

Speaker 2 (15:19):
No? What's to talk about? I got a super Bowl?
He doesn't. Wow. Wow. With all due respect, I love Sean,
of course. No.

Speaker 1 (15:27):
I get it, I get it. I get it, all right, buddy, listen.
I appreciate you as always, thank you for your time
each and every week. I will see you in Atlanta
this weekend.

Speaker 2 (15:34):
All right, my boy. Bye,
