Speaker 1 (00:00):
Roman Harper, two time pro bowler, Super Bowl champion, SEC
Network analyst. Our friend is back with us here on
Thanksgiving Eve. What's going on? Brother? Happy Thanksgiving?
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Well it's kill k B. That's actually a good question
you bring up, like who would you bring back for
some of your favorite teams?
Speaker 1 (00:14):
Who would you do?
Speaker 2 (00:15):
That's a question? Well are they do? They have to
be alive? Is it? Like? How far back? I think
that's another thing i'd want to know.
Speaker 1 (00:22):
Well, see if part of me is like, you know,
let's keep it within reason. You know, somebody who left
the game in the last ten years because we don't
even we don't even bring it back. Dick bukis out
of retirement, right right, right, That's.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
What I'm saying, Like, you know, do I I want
to see somebody like Wilt Chamblain because I'm too young.
I've never seen this guy, you know what I mean? Like,
could I do that for my Lakers? You know? But
I agree that's a good question. I have to think
about it. I don't know anybody right now off the
top of my head.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
You know Smoke Do you know that Smoke is a
conspiracy theorist. He does not believe in Wilt Chamberlain's hundred
point game. He doesn't believe it happened.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
Come boys, you got to stop that. It's a sports
conspiracy people, stop it. It's aren't getting up with the
other stuff. Conspiracy. Now you're bringing conspiracy theories into sports. Now,
I mean, next thing, you know, we're talking about the
you know, I'm not even going down that rabbit hole.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
It's okay, let's go, okay, all right, Well, it's good
to have you back. I Uh, First of all, what's
the big Harper family Thanksgiving tradition? Are you like pure
traditionalist turkey, ham, cranberry sauce? Do you mix it up?
What do you do?
Speaker 2 (01:25):
Yeah? I think we're pretty much kind of kind of traditionalist.
I don't think we do anything crazy. I'm a bigger
of a ham guy than I am turkey. My wife
makes great collar greens, and I also love makronin. She
those are like my must halves. She won't let me
have fried pork chops, which if I could break any traditions,
that's what I would do. I would make fried pork
(01:46):
chops a Thanksgiving thing, because ultimately it's really just about
eating the food. Everybody loves. All these other things, and
you know we're supposed to be thankful. Well, I'd be
thankful to have my favorite meal with the fried port jobs.
So if I could bring that loan to Ham, I'd
be really happy. And then I've got to finish off
with sweet and State of Pie because my mom has
(02:07):
taught my wife how to make them, and maybe she
kind of mastered it. But it is great. So that's
my other thing.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
Phenomenal. I love it all right, let's talk a little
college football here before we do anything else. It's rivalry
weekend in college football. I get sad for this weekend,
even though it's arguably you know, it's certainly one of
the two best weekends of the year, but it also
means college football's regular season is coming to a close.
So big games, big rivalries, but it means it's almost over.
How are you feeling about the Iron Bowl this year?
(02:35):
Obviously Alabama's the much better football team, but it's still
the Iron Bowl.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
Number One is it's almost over for a teams unless
you didn't go to bowl games. So from good teams,
you still got a chance. That's true. I remember when
bowl games actually used to matter, like we were excited
or fired up to go get some more practice time
in with the team you're with and then go out
there and try and get some bull swag and go
win a bowl game. But I'm gonna get off my soapbox,
(03:01):
not gonna be that guy today. But to the iron Bow, Kyle,
I'm fired up for it. I think it's a great
opportunity for alb But I'm gonna go out there to
you know, supplant themselves and say, no, we are in
the college football playoffs because we got there and win
a game, and then you get into the SEC Championship.
I like their champions and all of those things. And
(03:21):
to be honest with you, Auburn hasn't been that good
all year. They did look good versus Vanderbilt. They put
up some day, finally found a way to have some offense,
to sustained offense under Ashton Daniels, a quarterback that's now playing,
but they still lost the game. So and even when
you have good that's what I've the difference between good
(03:42):
teams and bad teams. Good teams you find ways to
win games even if it's ugly. Bad teams find ways
to lose games even when you play well. So like that,
has got to be the difference. Alabama has to make
Auburn feel that way, and then you have to be
able to calm down or get over the Jordan Hair effect,
because if it wasn't, if this thing was at Brian Denny,
(04:05):
nobody would be talking about it that how scary is it?
But the fact that it's in Jordan Hare the last
three games, it's the last six games, there's last six
Iron Bowls that's been split three to three. They've scored
the exact amount same points as well, So it is
a rivalry that continue to goes down down the wire,
and especially when it's in Jordanair, you just never know
(04:26):
because everybody has seen crazy things happen in Jordan Hare
Stadium in the ironbol.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
I'm with you now. I mean, maybe I'm not going
to say the biggest rivalry game in the SEC this weekend,
but in terms of ranking and stature and implications Vandy
at Tennessee. We were just talking to our mutual buddy
Ryan McGee about this yesterday. He's a Tennessee alum. He's
going to be up there. First ever ranked matchup between
these two, which is absolutely insane. Vandy fourteenth in the
(04:53):
rankings outside looking in chance for a top twenty win,
but can they get it on the road. What are
you thinking here?
Speaker 2 (04:59):
Man? You know, I heard mcgeewee talked about it yesterday
talking about, you know, beat the nerds in them back
all type thing. That was hilarious. But it's just so
interesting to see that. You know that this has been
a once in a lifetime or generational Vanderbilt team. This
Vanderbilt team has been different all year long. We've talked
about it, and at the beginning of the year, we
(05:21):
actually thought that this Vanderbilt team could only win if
they ran the ball a certain way that you know,
they had to control the time of possession, they had
to win the takeaway turnover battle. But as this team
has progressed and matured and just gotten better, they're throwing
the football all over the ballpark. You know, the Diego
pop has had what he had three straight three hundred
(05:42):
yard passing games. Then he just put another four hundred
and four hundred and thirty something or four hundred and
sixty eight yards whatever it was. It broke the Vanderbilt
all time passing single game records. And so now they're
throwing the ball over the Ballpark. They don't have to
win how we think they did. I think it's a
great It's gonna be a great game. That's why we're
going SEC Nation. We're going to Knoxville. So I'm really
(06:04):
fired up about this game, just to be able to
go out there and watch two really good teams battle
it out, and a team like Vanderbilt who's been a
team of destiny. Diego Pavi has this great story and
you know, has a chance to all of a sudden
if he wins. Is just getting invited. I don't know
if I'm not saying he's gonna win a Heisman, but
getting invited to the Heisman even the first person from
(06:25):
Vanderbilt to ever do that as well. So it's like
all these things that could happen for Vanderbilt, Diego Pavia
and Eli Stowers and all these other great players, and
Clark where he's gone an excellent job of humbling himself,
building this program and getting it to where they have
it now. Now it's all about sustaining it and bigger
goals and thinking and dreaming is purely really big, Like
I love that about Clark Lee. And then on the
(06:47):
other side, you got Knoxville and you know, with Hypol
and the things that he's been able to do hasn't
been what everybody wanted him to be this season. But man,
they can still say who else would they rather play
Thanvanderilt When Vanderbilt's good, and then all of a sudden,
get your big brother to knock you back down and say, no, no,
no, no no, We're still the best team in the state.
You're just Vanderbilt. We're still Tennessee. And so that part
(07:11):
of it, in that aspect of it's got to be
huge too. And when it comes to the field, Kyle,
I'll say this last point. Tennessee's bigger. They are bigger
than them. So how much and how does Tennessee run
their offense effectively using two tight ends or multiple tight
ends running the football downhill. They've implemented this more this
year than any other time under Josh Hypelat Tennessee. They're
(07:34):
not spreading you from corner to corner. They stretch you
a little bit from the wide receivers. But they're using
double tight ends and using them in the run game.
And can they bully Vanderbilt into submission in neland stadium.
It's going to be a great matchup and Kneland Stadium
is another thing too, right, how loud is it there?
It's crazy?
Speaker 1 (07:50):
Oh yeah, no, absolutely, What about this Texas A and
M Texas matchup? It's in Austin, and I don't know, Like,
on the one hand, you got all these Steve Sarkejian rumors.
He shot them down, so people don't believe him. And
you know, Archs come on late. But A and M
continues to find a way to win. They've got obvious
You know, everybody's got implications this time of the year
with the postseason. But what's your feeling here about A
and M at Texas?
Speaker 2 (08:13):
I think A and M has been the better team
all year long. Texas is playing well though, they are
playing some of their better football right now, but they're
also going to be missing their best defensive player, Anthony
Hill Junior. I think he's still going to be out
of with injury, with something wrong with his hands. So
that's a huge drop. That's a huge miss for Texas defensively.
He's that good of a player. But Arch Manning is
(08:35):
still in the football downfield, and you know, he looks
really good versus a terrible Arkansas defense. Arkansas is awful.
You know, I had a defensive coordinator, Greg Williams. They
used to say when the defense was bad, He's like
that defense is setting defenses back fifty years. They did
that efing bad. That is what Arkansas looks like right now.
They are terrible. Sorry to get off on a tangent,
(08:56):
but man, they are very very bad on defense, and
arts made them look that way. So but Texas A
and M is so good on third down. This game
is gonna come down to the little things third down execution.
If it goes tex A and M's way, then tex
A and M wins this game on the road. But
if Texas can pull it off or go out there
and do what they need to do, then Texas could
(09:17):
easily win this game because Texas is a good team
and they're talented. But Sark also versus top five teams,
doesn't win at Texas. I think his records now one
in seven. So that's also another thing. That you got
your wallet.
Speaker 1 (09:31):
Bet she's got it. She got the wallet, for sure.
They don't leave home without the wallet.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
She just told me to shut up. Okay, So I guess.
Speaker 1 (09:40):
All right, Hey, I'm looking at the LSU game this weekend.
Obviously they follow completely out of relevance this time of
year at Oklahoma, and it's got me thinking more about,
you know, who's going to be there next year? And
I'm looking at the Egg Bowl this weekend, Ole miss
number seven in the country. There a d Keith Carter
told us, I guess about a week ago that we'll
announce Lane Kiffin's and I guess their own after the
(10:02):
Egg Bowl. I'm just stuck on, why are you waiting
to announce that you're staying? If you're staying, Like to me,
it's almost a clearcut indicator that he's gone to either
LSU or Florida, And that's what we'll find out after
the egg Bowl, but maybe not. What's your gut feeling
tell you about this?
Speaker 2 (10:17):
It's exactly what I would say too. It's the same thing,
like I don't understand, Like you know, if you if
you wanted to tell us that you were staying, you
would just do that, right And so for me, when
I hear all these things, I'm like, Okay, well he's leaving,
and I don't know exactly what Lane wants or what
Lane's looking forward, but Lane is trying to get it,
(10:38):
so it'll be interesting to see. I don't know if
Mimsispi State's good enough as a team to beat Old Miss,
regardless of all the noise around this game. And this
is a game where these fan bases do not like
each other, They really really hate each other. They're two
totally different styles of fan bases. So I'm looking forward
(10:58):
to these games just for everything else. Is Old Miss
able to handle all the noise, because you know, I
get I hear Trinidada Chandler's talking about well he you know,
one game one to no mentality, all these other things,
and you know there's no we're not paying attention in
the outside noise blah blah blah. Well he doesn't send
(11:20):
those sweets out every other week, so clearly it's something.
So can Old Miss handle all those things? That's what
I am looking forward to in that game, And you know,
and the rivaly aspect of it is big. But it's
gonna be interesting because mister the State, if they win,
they get to a bowl game. Old Miss, you lose,
I think you're still in the playoffs, but it's just
(11:41):
a big dark cloud. And then if your coach leaves,
the playoffs committee will have to take that into consideration
as well. So how much further down the wrong do
you drop? I don't know.
Speaker 1 (11:51):
Two quick things will get you out of here, Clemson.
South Carolina is just about as big a dud as
it could be, especially Givens. I mean, listen, thought South
Carolina could be, you know, one of the biggest focal
points of college football this year given the preseason.
Speaker 2 (12:06):
Well you did not, No.
Speaker 1 (12:07):
You didn't, but a lot of people did. And I
bought into it, at least partially. But it's the polar
opposite of that. South Carolina's not even going bowling. Shane
Beamer is going to be on the hot seat. You've
got programs trying to poach Leonora's sellers. They've already fired
the OC, the offensive line coach. Like, if you're South Carolina,
how do you approach the offseason going into next year
under Shane Beamer knowing that this year was massively disappointing.
(12:29):
Next year there's going to be a lot riding on it.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
I would say, win this game. If you win this game,
everything feels okay in my opinion about South Carolina. If
they win this game, everything's okay. And I know that
they didn't have the season that they wanted to that
they were not that good this year. But I didn't
think they would be that good because of how many
players they had to replace on the defensive side of
(12:53):
the football field, and not just replace normal guys, but first, second,
well second, third round guy is close to being first
round guys on that defense, so multiple guys. I don't
think South Carolina's at the place where they can just
plug and replace that easily like some other schools too.
So that was my number one thing on South Carolina.
(13:13):
But I still think this game is interesting because it's
the rivalry. Davos Sweeney. I mean the fact that they
beat Louisville last week on a Friday night. I mean
it kind of like this is exactly what Clemson tries
to do and get to back Roland, and ultimately I
think it does matter to the state of South Carolina
and Clemson in South Carolina. Throw the records out. Neither
(13:35):
one of the teams have been good or successful this
year or where they thought they wanted to be. Clemson,
another team moved. I had a friend of mine had
him in the National Championship. He looks like, man, this
dude an idiot, But you know, Nobody saw Clemson struggling
the way that they have this year. Nobody saw that happen.
And ultimately, I think this game for the state of
South Carolina and Bragg and Routes, and also for the
(13:56):
University of South Carolina and Shane Beemer say we're still
better than you, Dabo. I think when South Carolina gets
to say that to Dabo Sweeney, they always take a
little pride in that. So I'm not gonna discredit that.
Speaker 1 (14:06):
Yeah, all right, last thing. We'll let you go and
get to your holiday. Panthers fell flat on Monday Night football.
You and I talked about this last week. We were
sharing or I guess just enjoying your Monday Night football stories,
and a lot of us were hopeful that this team
was ready for prime time, but they didn't seem to be.
Speaker 2 (14:21):
Was it that.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
Did you see a team that simply wasn't ready for
the spotlight, the stage in the moment, or was it
more than that?
Speaker 2 (14:29):
I just didn't think they were. I mean, first of all,
they're not better than San Francisco, that's number one. I
thought the defense competed and played well. It was unfortunate
whatever happened. I barely got to watch the game because
I was at basketball with my daughter, but I heard about,
you know, the struggles offensively and just the up and
(14:50):
down emotions of the opinions of Bryce Shawn. It could
either bring this team together and he ultimately survive this
and they all get better and find a way to
win as a team and have him as your quarterback
going forward, or it will fracture this thing. And I
(15:11):
have no idea when this organization will be able to
win at a higher clip if it doesn't turn out
to be what I just said at the beginning part.
And so I think a lot of outside noise can
start to creep in if you let it. And especially
because so many fans and this is not just Carolina
Panthers fans, this is the Alabama fans who want to
see Kaylin debor not be successful as well. Sometimes right
(15:34):
every time that Alabama loses, oh he's got to go.
He don't win like this or not like that. They'd
rather be right than actually just root for the best
outcome of your own team. And so when you're always
trying to spew negative at the first negative turn, like
that wears on people. They're professionals, but they're all young
(15:55):
professionals in this game. It's not a lot of guys
that have been on great winning teams that gnawed a
hunker down mentality and block out the outside noise and
be able to continue to hammer through a season, not
just one or two games in swings, but a season,
because ultimately, that's how do you do it? And playoff
teams are built in November and December. Right, if you
(16:17):
just win November December, you got a champ and you
got to win those games, and they still got a
whole month of December and they can win this division too.
That's the crazy thing. As bad as you want to
say it, I want a division here. Going seven to
eight and one, it was terrible. We went two straight
months Kyle, without winning the game. I was a miserable
so sob at home, miserable. And we still made the
(16:38):
playoffs and won a game in the playoffs. So you
have to continue to not waiver as a player and
got to continue to block out, and you've got to
get everybody. Got to get everybody's back, because I'm hearing
too much outside noise, Kyle, and I don't like that,
and that I'm telling you it has ruined teams, and
(17:00):
once you ruin one season, the team is never the
same again. That's the NFL. Love it.
Speaker 1 (17:04):
Hey, buddy, Happy Thanksgiving to you the family. Tell Heather
and the kids. I said the same. Thank you for
your time as always, Safe travels.
Speaker 2 (17:10):
All right, Oh man, love you guys. Man, Happy Thanksgiving
Man to everybody else out there. Man, hey, get that
forty grand bro. I heard you earlier. Get that forty
grand I got congratulations y'all keep doing well. Tell come
to I said, I
