Speaker 1 (00:01):
Over fifteen thousand total yards, gonna go the way? Sixteen
NFL seasons?

Speaker 2 (00:07):
Are you say that's nice? Fine?

Speaker 1 (00:10):
Pro bowls and countless memories.

Speaker 3 (00:12):
When a dog gets an X ray, they've got that.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Steve Smith inside their rib game.

Speaker 1 (00:16):
Steve Smith is on WFNZ high suff Song.

Speaker 4 (00:22):
We're live for Platform Sports in South End. I've got
an unbelievable view of the Carolina or rather Charlotte skyline.
It's a beautiful Carolina evening and a great night for
football platform sports a Vegas style sports bar here in
the Queens City. We are broadcasting live until eight o'clock
tonight and it's our watch party event for Monday night
football Carolina at San Francisco and following last night's Buccaneers loss,

(00:46):
a chance for the Panthers to jump into the number
one spot in the NFC South all by themselves if
they can take advantage of the opportunity. And as I
told you earlier in the show, Steve Smith's seen your
Panthers legend. NFL Network analyst also has got his own
PODCAS the eighty nine Show posted a clip earlier today
saying that he thinks this Carolina team can absolutely be

(01:06):
a playoff team and the Dave Canalys is building a
culture and has these young bucks ready to run through
a wall. Let's welcome back Agent eighty nine Steve Smith
Senior for his weekly conversation Steve, it's good to have you, man.
I love the podcast clip that I watched earlier. Sounds
like you're fired up for the Panthers tonight in this
big opportunity.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
Yeah. I mean it's a great opportunity. Fired up, But
you know it's still a little early. You can't you
can't shoot you wat too early? Man, You got it, thankim.
You know, get on the bus first.

Speaker 4 (01:34):
That's true.

Speaker 5 (01:34):
That's true.

Speaker 4 (01:35):
It's not even four o'clock. I might be jumping the gun.
But in my defense, I've been fired up for this
game for like six days straight, since last Tuesday. I've
been ready for them to play this game. What just
from your career, like, what are your fondest memories of
playing on Monday night? Playing in prime time like this?
Every week's big. But when you get the spotlights solely
to yourself on Monday night, that's a really big deal, man.

Speaker 3 (01:56):
That's huge. Right. You know, Monday night used to be
the thing, right night, Sunday and Monday night was the thing,
and then obviously now they've had a Thursday Night, but
Monday night football is still with every little boy dreams
of playing. You know, it's just it's magical, it's spectacular.
You know that you're a really good football team, or

(02:17):
at least the media believes that you're a good football
team because you're on Monday night football. A lot of times,
not every team gets an opportunity to play on Monday night,
so you know, these guys need to relish that opportunity.
They're wearing the all black helmets, which I loved. You know,
some people complain about the white, but I mean the

(02:38):
ability to be able to switch up and alternate. Man,
I really enjoy watching how they do that.

Speaker 4 (02:45):
So again, I would encourage everybody to go check out
the podcast, the eighty nine show. I saw the clip
that you posted on Instagram. You talked about Dave canallis
building a culture. He's got these guys ready to run
through a wall. What have you, as a former player
recognized in the way that he's doing that.

Speaker 3 (03:01):
Well, one of the biggest things is last week, you know,
in the locker room hearing a coach being able to
talk about some of the things that he believed was
his fault and then obviously keeping his players accountable. And
you rarely hear you rarely hear that from a coach,
and I thought just that was remarkable, especially you know,

(03:21):
a lot of people has they have kind of like the.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
Perception of, you know, maybe he's too much happy, go lucky,
But I think he's doing the heck of a job. Man.

Speaker 4 (03:34):
Yeah, I see signs of that myself. And you know,
there were people earlier in the season, and this is
what media does, it's what fan does or fans do. Rather,
we questioned coaches, we questioned players based on what we've seen.
We don't know what's yet to come, but I do
like a lot of what I've seen from Dave Canalis.
How do you suspect that he'll approach this game offensively
tonight given the fact that this team, this offense has
had both success with the power run game at times

(03:56):
and then last week coming off of historic passing game performance,
what's thepproach tonight?

Speaker 5 (04:00):
Do you suspect, Well, this approach tonight it can be
a little bit funky because you have and the reason
I state that is you have Kyle.

Speaker 3 (04:11):
Shanahan and you have Dave Canalis.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
These guys are.

Speaker 5 (04:14):
Kind of from the same offense, so everybody knows what
everybody's doing.

Speaker 3 (04:19):
It's very similar.

Speaker 5 (04:20):
Maybe named something else, but schematically and fundamentally they are identical.
And then also defensive side, right with Robert Salin, the
type of defense that he's running, he's done a great
job being able to keep that thing together with super

(04:40):
glue and duct tape because.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
They've hit all the injuries. And then you know Elvero,
he's come. He's had opportunity to go against this defense
when he was with the Los Angeles Rams where they won.

Speaker 3 (04:53):
The Super Bowl. So all of these things are really
very much just like I mean, it's almost like step
brothers or something where it's very familiar. Now the question
is going to be who can throw a little wrinkle
in there that gives the eye candy to the opposing team,

(05:15):
that makes them bite so they can go ahead and
have that big play.

Speaker 4 (05:19):
How much does the Bryce performance last week allow Dave
to do everything he wants to do, and especially you
know I was talking about this earlier, if I'm not mistaken,
last week in their win over Arizona. You know, Brock
perty and the offense, or rather Arizona drop back to
throw the ball sixty times, San Francisco didn't sack him once.
Does that give you confidence, if you're Dave Canalis, that
the past game will have opportunities for big plays tonight?

Speaker 3 (05:41):
Yeah, you do say, hey, we got a shot because
it's you know, statistically, but.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
We all know every week is every week it's a
different scenario, different situation. So you can't really invest all
your eggs in the basket of they didn't get any sacks.
The Carolina Panthers or we won against Atlanta Falcons.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
Was zero sacks too, So what does that say?

Speaker 1 (06:07):
Right?

Speaker 5 (06:07):
You see what I'm saying. So you gotta be careful
and understand that sometimes you can get lost in chasing
the numbers and then and forget that they're human beings
that are actually playing.

Speaker 4 (06:19):
Absolutely and speaking of the Carolina defense, listen, they've improved drastically, dramatically, yes,
last year, but they're far from a finished product. They'll
tell you that. And tonight they're gonna be without both
starting linebackers Trevin Wallace and Christian Rose boom Down. Oh,
I mean, that's that's tough, Steve. I mean this defense
has had difficulty with tight ends. Anyway, now you get

(06:39):
to face George Kittle. How big a concern is that.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
Especially with George Kittle because he you know, he's been
sitting on the couch a little bit and jokingly on
it with injuries, so.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
He's gonna be ready. Let me also take a take
a moment to explain something too, right. You know, earlier
in the year early I.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
Do my draft stuff every year, right, and.

Speaker 3 (06:58):
There's been this There.

Speaker 5 (07:00):
Have been a lot of people to say that I personally.

Speaker 3 (07:02):
Don't like Pat uh, you know, t Mac And I
said I didn't like to pick, not that I don't
like the player. And when I say I don't like
to pick in regards.

Speaker 5 (07:15):
Of the the need of the.

Speaker 3 (07:19):
Team, you see what I'm saying.

Speaker 2 (07:21):
And so that that's that's and I've heard some things
right that they were going in a different direction. So
I was just surprised based on the need. Now when
I'm talking about need, and why I'm bringing this up
is if you have a defensive tackle right now to
match with Derek Brown, when you have your two young

(07:43):
linebackers down, you get a reprieve a little bit from
the guy that's filling in because you got two big
ass students in the middle, in the middle clogging it
up because you know, you know why Chocolate CMC is
gonna do his thing. They're gonna try to him the football,
and then Brian Robinson too. They're getting him acclimated and

(08:04):
he's running tough, hard nose football as well. So I
just wanted to make sure people understood I don't know
enough of these young players to say who I like
and dislike personally, but I do I do understand and
realize right that we get choices and every year we

(08:24):
do this, there's team needs, and I think that team
needs is starting to rear his head. However, very pleased
with being able to throw the football to t mac
who's he's gonna have a tough task today because it's
Monday night football. So now the defender, it's just like, hey,
the lights are bright, and when the lights are bright,

(08:46):
you expect the playmakers to show up and show.

Speaker 4 (08:50):
Out absolutely all right, last thing, I'll get you out
of here. I was watching Sunday Night football last night
with a lot of people. Obviously, the Rams took care
of business, helped out Carolina, but also with that Baker Mayfield.
He's got a shoulder sprain, had to leave the game.
Look like he immense pain.

Speaker 2 (09:05):
Right.

Speaker 4 (09:05):
We know he's a tough guy, but he was in
immense pain last night. So now that you know you
said this on your podcast, you know you got a
handful of weeks left to decide this thing. And these
two teams, Carolina and Tampa, will go at it twice
in the final three weeks. Given the current circumstances, how
do you see the division playing out?

Speaker 3 (09:23):
And I see the division really playing out where were
on pins and needles. It's gonna be a nail bighter, right,
you got let's just say, let's we don't know, We
don't know what's gonna happen, right, you hope? And you
want to say the Carolina Pender's gonna win and get
Semanrusco forty nine. Yeah, well, let's be honest. The week
after when they played the Los Angeles Rams, they're not
playing this, They're not playing the Samruisco forty niners. They're

(09:47):
playing I believe, probably one of the best NC teams
in the NFFL with the Los Angeles Rams. So you
got to take care of business tonight to set yourself
up for the long haul, because it's still gonna be
some rocky roll. You're still going to have a little
bit of pushback from these other teams because they're not

(10:10):
quitters either.

Speaker 4 (10:12):
Ah, It's one hundred percent true, Steve. Thank you for
your time as always. Enjoyed the game tonight, brother, and
we'll talk to you next week.

Speaker 3 (10:18):
