Speaker 1 (00:00):
On the eve of veterans reporting, the day that the
rookies report. We also have the annual pop list designations.
Tommy Trimble and Dan Chisenna put on the physically and
perform list at the start of training camp. The Panthers
punter Sam Martin is on the active slash non football
injury list with a hamstring injury that our next guest

(00:22):
first reported. He is expected to miss a little bit
of time, but he will be okay. It looks like
in terms of the Panthers regular season, that man is
Joe person who joins us from the athletic and he
joins us on sports trading on ninety seven WFNZ, Joe,
I understand that you are doing an annual rite of passage,

(00:43):
or not an annual right of patchagese, but a rite
of patsion nonetheless of trying to buy a new phone,
and to that I wish you not only godspeed, but
thank you also for making other arrangements that join us today.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
Yeah, thank you, sir. I hope you're having a good summer.
Right before you were a call, I was like, wait,
he's not gonna want to call on my other phone,
So I think this one is up and running, and
I'm looking forward to chatting with you man.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
So the Sam Martin thing, we're not supposed to be worried, right, yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
I mean, you know, the funny thing is, whenever that
pops up at this time of year with anyone that
non football injury, it sort of sounds nefarious, actually, and
sometimes it is. Sometimes guys get in you know, jet
ski accidents and other things. But really what that designates

(01:36):
is this was a he left in June healthy and
he came back in late July not healthy, and so
it didn't basically, it didn't happen on our campus. He
got hurt somewhere else. And in Sam Martin's case, it
sounds like he tweaked his hamstring, probably punning, but don't

(02:00):
know that. But I do know that I was told
that it's not considered major. Don't know if they'll sign anyone.
I mean, it probably depends on his timeline. But that's
kind of where things stand as of now.

Speaker 1 (02:16):
Joe put on a list this morning of the ten
most intriguing storylines for the Panthers ahead of training camp,
which begins in Earnest on Wednesday. I'll take a stab
at one. What level do you feel like is the
most easily expected for where the defense could get to

(02:36):
because we know that it's hard to believe it could
be much worse. How good do they have to be
to represent a shift change for this organization.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
Yeah, it's a great question, and right, I think we
all can agree that it would be difficult for them
to be worse. And the presence of Derek Brown in
the middle of that three four is going to be huge,
especially where where run defense is concerned. I mean, wait,

(03:05):
you know, Barrett's never been a big sack, you know,
interior pressure guy on the quarterback, but he does a
fantastic job, never better than in twenty twenty three of
just blowing up running lanes and you know, hitting running
backs three yards into the backfield. And I think that's

(03:25):
a good starting point because a lot of their troubles
last season started from not being able to stop people
on the ground and so and Shaq Thompson's achilles injury
three weeks after Derek Brown went out in Week one
did not help. But what you had then was like
a lot of when you got teams went when a

(03:47):
garo Vero and his and his crew got teams into
third downs, they were third and shorts like they're you know,
that's part of the reason why the sack excuse me,
the pass rush was a knee mick. It just but
it really I do think I'll all stem from this
group that allowed and became only the third team in
NFL history to allow three thousand rushing yards in the season.

(04:10):
So is it a championship level defense? I don't think so.
I mean they're going to be relying on some young
guys at edge rusher. There's some unproven guys certainly at
depth positions in the second ay and even you know,
really kind of at safety at least one of the
safety spots opposite Trayvon merrig So, but I think they'll

(04:34):
be better. Which long answer to your short question, I.

Speaker 1 (04:38):
Will give you a chance to get to the quote
good stuff Bryce Young. How extrapolatable is his second half
to the season.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
Wow, that's a scrabble word, my friend. Look, that's yeah,
we don't know. I mean, I would think there's carryover.
You would hope there's carry over, But I kind of
thought there would be a better start to year two

(05:09):
for Bryce Young. And he looked, you know, like a
shell of his former self. Now I do think and
I know this is the point you're making that this
is second year in Dave canalysis system, whereas last year
it was sort of like, you know, trying to drink
out of a fire plug. And you know he and
I know Bryce is a smart guy, but it was

(05:30):
like learning a NFL, a second NFL system for the
second year in a row, and turned out to be
a lot. I think he was, you know, just kind
of a little I don't want to say in over
his head, but that's what he looked like the first
two weeks. And so he gets the chance over those
five games that month. As it turned out when Andy

(05:54):
Dalton starting that he could catch his breath, kind of
learn a little more in jest, a little more of
the offense, watch how Dalton was doing certain things, and
you know, you hope. I know. Last year, the question
every week to Dave Canalis is, well, wins Bryce coming back?
And then when he did, is he your starter next week?

(06:15):
And we saw until very late in the year Dave
Canalis wanted to make it a week by week proposition. Well,
the question this year that the Panthers need to answer
is he the quarterback? That is that you're going to
give a second contract to and take it into the future,
and if he plays like he did the final month

(06:35):
of the season, then I think it's a pretty easy
answer and you know, go from there.

Speaker 1 (06:41):
And part of this question also has to deal with Bryce,
but it deals with the Panthers first round pick Teteroa McMillan.
Is there a metric you're looking for or you just
kind of going off of a feel as to how
to fairly judge Teteroa McMillan's rookie season as a success
or not.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
Well. Drop passes for one, because we saw that with
last year's first round pick in Davier Laguette. Explosive plays.
I mean, I think those that have been lacking in
this offense in the past game the last two years,
and they just, you know, everything was felt like, you know,
it was a grind move in the football down the

(07:23):
field and look, those are cool too, and they take
time off the clock and give your defense a rest.
But sometimes it's nice to look up and like, whoa,
we just got fifty yards in one chunk and we're
already in field goal range. So that I think is
something that Milli can help with just because of that
catch radius. And that height and you know, pretty reliable

(07:45):
hands in college. You know that the old saying is
a guy like McMillan is really never covered. And I
do think that's one of Bryce's strength is putting that ball,
which we saw him do a lot with Jalen Koker
last yearvoing that ball where only the receiver can get it,
and Cocher did a nice job. But I think McMillan's

(08:06):
going to do a terrific job at that. But more
of that is more consistency, and look, I think his
presence and this is going to be a little hard
to quantify, you know, other than looking at get stats,
But I do think it should benefit Xavier Lagette not
to have the pressure and playing the X of being

(08:30):
out there on his lonesome drawing the top coverage every
time he lines up a wide receiver for the Panthers.
I think he should really benefit in in his second
year here.

Speaker 1 (08:42):
The situation involving the Panthers in iki Ikwanu has not
necessarily resolved in terms of getting an extension done for
the season. We've seen Brown, Hubbard Horn get their money.
Do you think it's a situation where it happens sooner
rather than later for Ikey or do you think this
will go into the season.

Speaker 2 (09:00):
Yeah, it's a great question. I don't think it's gonna
happen like in the first couple of weeks of training camp,
just because that Dan Morgan and Brent Tillis are going
to have a lot of other fires to put out,
just nothing crazy, just things like today like oh wait,
we're probably going to need another tight end while Tommy
Tremble continues to recover. And so but I do think,

(09:24):
you know, both sides want you know, are are working
at this from a good standpoint. Like It's like, I
don't think they're super far off. I mean, they didn't
get it done in the spring when they were talking
about trying to get Icky locked up. But you know
it's gonna it's gonna be a you know, a big
number to swallow that left tackle position. They don't come cheap.

(09:47):
And you know the thing I the little the number
I put in my my article today was I think
if you get if Ikey's to make twenty million bucks
a year annual annual average value, that puts him like
the twelfth highest paid tackle. I'm sure his agent and

(10:08):
Ikey are going to want to be at least in
the top ten. If you, oh, if you get them
up to like twenty one twenty one and a half
million a year, you're up around top seven. And so
that to me seems like a good starting point. But
I'm not the one negotiating it, and not my money.
But like I said, that position, you're going to be

(10:29):
paying Ikey a nice thumb.

Speaker 1 (10:32):
Last one for Joe person of the athletic. We've been
given the characterization that there are probably players who are
projected starters of a panto defense that they like a
heck of a lot more inside the room than maybe
those of us who sit outside the room feel about them.
Do you feel like we may see changes, particularly in
the secondary, as we go through out trading camp to

(10:52):
try and maybe get another starter level player or two
in there.

Speaker 2 (10:58):
I possibly, yeah that, I mean, it depends on injury.
But I think we've all been waiting on them to
sign another safety just because they worked out Julian Blackman
and Marcus Williams, I mean way back in like March,
and so it hadn't happened yet, so probably not happening
barring injury or really inconsistent play from somebody like Demani

(11:21):
Richardson or rookie safety Ransom. So yeah, I don't get
the sense that kind of like the icky thing. I
don't get the sense they're like, you know, what was
it a couple of years ago where they signed the
edge rusher justin Houston, like a week into camp or
week and a half. I don't know that that's going

(11:42):
to happen, but I and I but I wouldn't rule
out something. And you know the other thing we've seen
Dan Morgan do last summer was really worked the waiver
wire and you know, bringing in a handful of guys
after the final cuts were made and then now we're
having final final cuts and so I I and you know,

(12:04):
some of those guys like Shamar Bartholomew, for instance, is
a guy who was claimed on waivers last year from
the Jets dashed, you know, spent all year on the
active roster spot despite not playing much. I think they
want to give a guy like that a good long
look before they, you know, go do the same thing
again on the waiver wire.

Speaker 1 (12:24):
Joe persons work at the Athletic is impeccable. You can
find his piece on the ten Big Storylines for the
Panthers before training camp at the Athletic Joe, I'm looking
forward to seeing and hearing more from you as we
go throughout camp and the season, and it is upon
us we appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (12:38):
Pal. Thank you all right, buddy, have a great week.
