Speaker 1 (00:00):
Is in that vein.

Speaker 2 (00:00):
We now go to the guest line. We say hello
to our good friend Nick Carboni, who has battled heaven,
Earth and apparently a very long Christmas shopping line to
get involved with us here today he joins us for
a December twenty third edition of the Cayle Bailey show.
What's Up Carboni? How are you pale?

Speaker 1 (00:15):
Willie p In the words of job from Arrested Development
and many of my favorite Internet gifts and memes, I've
made a huge mistake. Oh no, I come to you
live from the Midtown Target parking garage. Ooh, two days
before Christmas. I do it to myself and I want
I may need therapy to figure out why.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
I went to the super Target. This is the year
I went to the super Target in Indianland today, thinking
that I was going to pick up name tags and
tissue paper and a Christmas card for my wife. And
it was a lot longer of a deal than I
thought it was going to be.

Speaker 1 (00:49):
Yeah, I choose the moat. I chose a very local
hot spot as well. Earlier. This is why I texted
you and thought, you know, it might get dicey for
three forty five, But I made it a across town
and then I read in a battle at target after
this call.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
So what is your sense of because this is something
that's been getting some play here today, the fact that
Dave Canalis is saying, we're not going to be scoreboard
watching this Seattle game. We're treating this like it's an independent,
standalone event. There are some people who are wondering whether
or not the Panthers should sit, some guys who might
be iffy because of the fact that you want to

(01:24):
keep everybody healthy for what's going on in week eighteen.

Speaker 1 (01:31):
One second was in the backe. See I knew that
would happen. Yes, I totally understand the approach to the
beginning of the game and most of the games they
both play at one o'clock. You have to win. You
want to win at the beginning of the day no
matter what, because you never know what can happen in Miami.

(01:53):
But at the end of the game, sure, like if
I'm Dave Canalis, I wanted an over my headset like, hey,
Miami's up three, maybe we should go for this fourth
down and use it to rally the troops a little bit.
So I think there can be like a healthy inkling
of what's going on in Miami, if you catch my drifts,
and but I don't think you go into the weekend
like planning wholesale changes because of that. I think the

(02:16):
task in hand is beat Seattle events. See if the
rest takes care of himself.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
This question I'm going to ask later is one that
I want to ask you. What has been the most
surprising thing about this run for the Panthers.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
That's a great question. I think that the defense has
a lot to do with a lot of the wins,
you know, game ceiling interceptions, game ceiling strip sacks. Obviously
that was not the case last season. It was a
team that couldn't come up with big plays and and
you know, be opportunistic and turn the ball over when

(02:52):
it counted, and obviously couldn't stop the run and had
trouble stopping you know, the pass as well. I mean
to see Mike Evans kind of limited to that one
fantastic touchdown throw and catch. But really that's that's the
biggest amount of damage he in that receiving corps. Did
you know That's that speaks values of how the defense

(03:13):
is improved too. And I know there's questions about the
steam and as the Guerrero, the guy they want there
next year, so they'd be more aggressive in this than that.
But you know, given the personnel, uh, you know, I
think they need a little bit more on that side
of the ball. But I think the defense being able
to hold teams to you know, twenty points like the
other day, and and shut out Atlanta and and come

(03:34):
up with with games saving stops against good teams, uh,
has been a huge part of this. And if you
had told me that going into the season, coming out
of last year, I would have kind of told you
to hold your horses it.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
We actually have a Texter right now who said, my
wife is currently at the Midtown Target.

Speaker 1 (03:52):
That's all. Everybody's here except you, Willie.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
I'm pretty sure as when I when I used to
live in Uptown, that Midtown Target became came the ban
of my existence for a couple of years because if
you need something over there, you know, it's no it's
it's no less than an hour, even if you live
like five to ten minutes away.

Speaker 1 (04:09):
The parking, the parking deck, it needs traffic plays that
would make it better.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
The part the parking deck needs to be reconfigured into
like a party thing, like like, could it could this
be Charlotte's next speakeasy the parking deck at the Midtown Target?

Speaker 1 (04:24):
Yeah, there you go.

Speaker 2 (04:25):
I might have just inadvertently backed into a business idea
for somebody. Uh N, CARBONI, WC and C Charlotte joining us.
This part of the question I find incredibly fascinating because
we got to the point in the offseason what we say,
you know what, to heck with the record, to heck
with anything. We need to know whether or not Bryce

(04:46):
Young is the guy by the end of this season.
As we sit two games left in the twenty twenty
five season, I feel like we can say Bryce Young
is the guy for now next season and even also
getting himself a fifth year option. How confident are you
that there is a future for him beyond that?

Speaker 1 (05:07):
Uh, you know, I think that part is still up
in the air. Beyond that fifty year option. I think
he's earned the fifth year option, like you just said,
I think it's you know, for a variety of reasons,
based on the way he's played, based on you know,
some of the the highlights this year and the ups
have been higher than the the highlights and the ups
in previous seasons, but they still have come with some
of the downs. But you know, I think that he's

(05:30):
still got to play his way into that extension talk.
And that's probably you know, with a really good start
keyword there, start because of the way the last couple
of seasons have started. You know, he could play his
way into that kind of extension if Dan Morgan wants
to get ahead of the money. But you know, it
just depends on how you qualify the guy. You kind
of did it there, like he's definitely done enough to

(05:52):
get that fifty year option and for the Panthers to
you know, say, well, we don't have to step on
the quarterback carousel, you know, at least the next couple
of years. And that's a healthy thing to have for
a franchise. So obviously I'm saying give in for the
I think the pen is sitting on the paper for
the fifth year, just that not no inks to paper
until the deadline. But you know, I still think he's

(06:15):
got to play his way into that that big money,
that extension.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
I'm seeing Derek Brown speaking to the media right now
and it wasn't quite expletive written, but there was definitely
some expletives thrown out by Derek Brown for him not
making the Pro Bowl. I just ask you, simply, will
Derek Brown kill somebody in the next two weeks on
the football field?

Speaker 1 (06:35):
You know this, This may be what it takes to
finish this thing off a more pissed off Derek Brown.
And I just say more because I think that's just
how he plays anyway. Sure he's a delight to deal
with and speak to, but you know, I wouldn't be
on the wrong side, wouldn't be on the wrong side
of him in that gridire. But yeah, I mean, what

(06:57):
is the Pro Bowl? Like? What is it now? It's
an NFL Guild player basically all starting So like, let's
just call it that and call and still reserve Pro
Bowl like on paper as a pretty good honor not
quite all pro, but something that you can, you know,
boast on your resume. And he should absolutely be able
to call himself that. It's ridiculous and obviously looks like

(07:22):
no alternates for defensive tackles, so there's no way, there's
no path, which is absurd. I mean, Jordan Davis, Charlotte
caid up in Philly, same deal. Yeah, just call it
something else. And I still think to be able to
call somebody a pro bowler means you're one of the
best at your position. Not you know you you kind
of fit the roster construction for an All Star flag
football game.

Speaker 2 (07:43):
Hey CARBONI WC and C Charlotte. I will not see
you someday in the press box because I'll be watching
with the commoners, but I will see you at some
point in the new year and appreciate all you do
for us, coming on this program and being a great
partisan member of the Charlotte media. We appreciate you as always.

Speaker 1 (08:03):
Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas, buddy, thanks a lot, Thanks for
having me.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
