Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome to the Liam Cohen Show, presented by Fresh from Florida,
JP Shadwick and Jeff Logoman. Keep you informed in up
to date with the head coach of Jorge Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Liam Cohen Show starts right now.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Welcome in The Liam Cohen Show, presented by Fresh from
Florida from the Hondai Studios the Miller Electric Center. We're
on the Jaguars Radio Network, presented by the University of Florida,
number one university in the US News and World Reports,
number one state for education. JP Shadrick, Jeff Logoman will
have Liam Cohen, the Jacks head coach with us starting
in the regular season.
Speaker 3 (00:37):
I think these guys will do tonight.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
Tony Vasselli, James Gladstone joining us in studio to get
things going at the start of training camp.
Speaker 4 (00:45):
Tony Vasselli, what's those joining us on the network? Was
a minute early? It is a new Land speed record.
Speaker 5 (00:52):
All our fans are gonna be like, hey, didn't show
up right when the show started.
Speaker 3 (00:56):
Amazing.
Speaker 4 (00:57):
Welcome in guys, James, glad to have you in here.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
Ish Man, It's awesome.
Speaker 6 (01:00):
Let's to be on the on the mic. I know this.
Speaker 7 (01:02):
We got two rules in this franchise. The first one
is beyond time. Yeah, Tony is abiding by that rule,
committed to the process.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
I hold him to that.
Speaker 5 (01:12):
Well, you'll love this first meeting departments, it's like we
have three before. This was before Liam put in the
whole football rules and stuff. We talked about how we're
going to operate as a operation staff. You know, we
had three rules. Beyond time, respect everyone in the building,
and work your ass off.
Speaker 3 (01:31):
That's it.
Speaker 5 (01:31):
If you do those three things, you are going to
be good.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
I know where you got those three things from.
Speaker 5 (01:36):
Well, actually you know where I got him from. To
be on times like tom obviously.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
Yeah, but that was be early, be early.
Speaker 5 (01:43):
So but we actually one of the things, and I
believe in that. Liam highlights it, and uh, James Lie
and I talked about it being on time. We will
not start a meeting early either. So if like the
meeting starts at nine, it starts at nine, that doesn't
mean like you're not if you get there five minutes early.
We're not going to start five minutes early, which was
(02:03):
TC time, which is that's his mode of operation. That's great,
But nine o'clock we have a meeting. It starts at
nine o'clock.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
So I got fined.
Speaker 5 (02:12):
One time I got fined. I was three minutes early
and I was late.
Speaker 2 (02:17):
I crossed the concentration line two minutes before the to begin,
and I got fine.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
The concentration Where.
Speaker 6 (02:27):
Was the concentration line?
Speaker 5 (02:28):
Practice field?
Speaker 2 (02:29):
Well, this was back in Stevens Point, you know, so
it was like you know, going.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
Through it was a little bit murky. There was a
game a blur.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
No he had you like baseball. You've got the guy
with the chalk machine. They had a line that was
across the gate, but was.
Speaker 5 (02:49):
Remember when the practice field used to be where Dailies
is now a lot d That's where it was for
our whole time you and I played here. It was
a chain link fence around the whole field with early
there wasn't even any coverings. They finally covered and some
people couldn't spy on us. But there was one gate
you could go through and there was literally a big
wide yellow line and that was a concentration step over.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
You're locked in.
Speaker 5 (03:15):
And if you're not across that line. In Tom's world,
five minutes before practice start, you're late. Fine, make it rain,
but you know where I got those with influence that
The kind of how I think about it in a
big way is John Robinson because I remember when he
came to Sea and Larry Smith was the coach before
(03:38):
great had a great was a great college coach. He
was more in than Tom Coughlin school of thought, lots
of rules, very like a lot and I remember Coach
Robinson came in and operated just find just operated with
Tom here no problems. When John Robinson came that scene,
we had a first meeting, team meeting. I'll never forget
three rules and they were similar to that. Beyond time
(04:03):
respect everyone in the building was big unrespecting because he
did not like if you respect, if you disrespected people
underneath you. He had a real issue with that.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Yeah, Rule number two has been framed many different ways, yes,
and some of them not so clean language wise.
Speaker 5 (04:18):
That's a good point. And then the last rule was
play your tail and so and I remember being a
player in that situation. For me, it was a lot
of freedom from the stance of not lack of rules
as and James's articulated this best. I'd never articulated this way,
but allowed me to be who I was and just hey,
(04:40):
it's easy show up on time, respect the building, respect everybody.
You respect people by being on time because you value
their time, you know, treat everyone as a human as
we should, with respect and love and kindness. And then finally,
just do your job to the best of your ability.
And amazingly, if you do those three things, every other
(05:04):
rule you can think of pretty much gets coveralls. It
falls in line. Now except for no white sox that
I couldn't find a place for that one. But uh,
and so that's kind of how we operate. And it's interesting, Lamb.
When he became our head coach, we sat down the
first time and we talked about the three of us,
like what are the teams, like, what's the culture, how
are we going to do things? And what are the rules?
(05:26):
And Liam's like, I got two rules, yeah, beyond time,
protect the team, Yeah, the.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
One the one thing I think that by having those
ground rules kind of talked about and established for I know,
for the locker room, because you know, I came from
environments that didn't necessarily have rules spelled out when I
came here with Coughlan and he had those rules and
his rules were way long.
Speaker 4 (05:47):
But the gist of it was those by the way,
if you if you.
Speaker 5 (05:52):
If you summarized all of rules outside of some of
the travel things like he had his nuances of what
he wanted to wear and stuff.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
Yeah, James, you would have gotten fed.
Speaker 5 (06:03):
No, James hates white sox too.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
Yeah, but he's got white sneakers on that was not allowed. Okay,
trust me, I know the rule book because I got
fined for that time.
Speaker 5 (06:11):
Halfway there. You're halfway there.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
But but the thing that I was going to get
at is that when you have those those rules in
place as a player, it gives you an environment that
you can thrive in because you don't feel like that
you have to end up cleaning up the rough locker
room or establishing what the rules should be as a leader.
I mean, it's already there, and it allows you to
do more than just pick up.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
The pieces of trash, so to speak.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
You know. Jeff Lockman, j P. Shadwick, Tony Boselli, James Gladstone.
This is the Liam Cohen Show. Liam Cohen will be
with us at the start of the regular season, stuck
with us.
Speaker 5 (06:46):
During training camp.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
James too.
Speaker 4 (06:49):
I don't think he's gotten two words in yet.
Speaker 5 (06:51):
A question he's happy with.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
He's the question.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
The team has been assembled, the team is on the
field being coached.
Speaker 3 (07:02):
Training campus here, Logs, you know where I'm going. I
do go there, James, What do you do now?
Speaker 6 (07:07):
Oh, that's a great question.
Speaker 7 (07:08):
You know, Tony and I spent a lot of time
together and I've done a ton of talking over the
course of the spring the early portion of the summer,
and you know, I'm looking forward to seeing all this
come to life and really round out the remaining items
on the to do list, so to speak, before the
season gets here, which right now, obviously with the kickoff
of camp, we're focusing a lot of our attention on
the return to play and what that all looks like.
(07:31):
While at the same time, we've got our scouting staff
back in the facility full time right now for a
two week window. Here, we're working through what we've labeled
as our scouting Summit, and we're walking through our modes operation,
the things that we're going to be placing an emphasis
on as we head into this next cycle, and really
getting a chance to be under the same roof with
them is a good thing for us as we all
(07:52):
get to know one another on a deeper level and
have a clear understanding for what it is we're looking
for as we start to hunt up the next iteration
of players that will come in, uh, through all the
modes of acquisition that will be in front of us,
and really just looking forward in the now to see
this group really, as as Liam has mentioned it, offer
(08:13):
their edge and create it together and really what the
identity of this team is going to look like here
throughout twenty twenty five.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
I got I got.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
Two questions for you, and I'll stick with the first question. First,
I don't want to overload your brain there because if
you're like me, you got to focus on one player.
Speaker 5 (08:31):
I'm glad I got you.
Speaker 2 (08:42):
How do you balance as a general manager the here
and now with this football team and also the future?
Because your job is not just about okay, I'm you're
not done with this roster. I mean there's still opportunities
to improve this roster here and now. But then also
you're looking down the road. So as a as a
(09:04):
general manager, how do you balance that as far as
handling them now but also handling the future?
Speaker 3 (09:10):
Right?
Speaker 7 (09:10):
I see him as one and the same in a
lot of ways, right, both can be true you're you're
focusing on both and you know one has impact on
the other, And I think it's you can try and
compartmentalize as best as possible, but at the same time,
you got to know that, you know, rooting yourself in
the current moment is probably what's going to lend itself
to the most production, and knowing that that will definitely
(09:33):
have layered impact on what lies in front, but balancing
the logic, the line of.
Speaker 6 (09:38):
Thinking is certainly going to remain at the forefront.
Speaker 7 (09:41):
And I think it is fun vacillating between sort of
our conversations in the meeting rooms throughout the course of
a day and then jumping out to the field and
seeing what's taking place, and then engaging in some strategy
around what comes next, but knowing that the current moment
is the one you got to root yourself, all.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
Right, Part two so that my brain can handle all this, Okay,
Every year, every team is in a different cap situation.
How is the health of the cap of this football
team this year, because at some point you may need
to tweak or add with injuries or with just supplementing
(10:21):
the roster. And also how is the cap situation of
this team moving forward, because you know a lot of
times that's not the conversation of this football team because
where it's been the most of the conversation is about
wins and losses. Most of the time the teams that win,
the conversation is about salary cap. But is the salary cap,
how is it now? And how's it look in the future.
Speaker 7 (10:41):
Yeah, we currently have about eighteen million in cap space,
and you got to account for and projectate. There's also
an idea you roll over a salary cap, so what
you don't use ends up in the next cycle, So
that's not a bad thing if you have a little extra.
We're kind of in the middle of the league on
the current space that we have at our disposal, which
gives us flexibility. It allows us if we feel like
(11:04):
we gotta we got to go after.
Speaker 6 (11:05):
Somebody, we can.
Speaker 7 (11:06):
We can entertain that we're not sort of limited by
that at this current moment. And obviously that has to
be entertained with a lot of forward thought, right knowing
that you can roll over and injuries may show themselves
that force your force your hand a little bit. Opportunities
pop up that you may or may not have anticipated,
and we certainly want to give ourselves a flexibility to
(11:27):
think about those things as they progress. And you also
got to take into consideration that our practice squads on
the horizon that'll take a chunk out of the current
cap space and things of that nature. So it's definitely
balancing a lot, but in a healthy spot heading into
the season, for sure.
Speaker 5 (11:42):
I think as you look forward you after, I think
the unknown is because you're going to have some rollover
at least where we sit today, not knowing what the
future looks like. But the other thing you don't we
don't know specifically, what's the cap going to be next year,
what's the increase Like I think the cap from the
league from a league standpoint, like the cap increase a
little bit more than people expected this year, so a
lot of things going to that with the revenue and
(12:03):
everything else.
Speaker 3 (12:04):
Seems like that happens every year.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
It usually goes up a little more than expected than
which means the business is cooling.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
That's right, downright, doesn't go down.
Speaker 5 (12:11):
Let's hope not. That would not be good for anybody.
Speaker 4 (12:14):
How long do we have you guys, by the way, uh,
thirty minutes thirty minutes from there.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
So we got that's cool, write it down. I wish
we weren't on time. We're going to take a time out.
We'll come back with more.
Speaker 2 (12:28):
Tony Boselli, James Gladstone with us in studio for the
opening Liam Cohen Show of the season on the Jaguars
Radio Network.
Speaker 5 (12:43):
Welcome Back.
Speaker 1 (12:44):
The Liam Cohen Show, presented by Fresh from Florida continues
right now.
Speaker 4 (12:49):
Yes, The Liam Cohen Show is presented by a Fresh
from Florida J P.
Speaker 2 (12:53):
Shadwick with Jeff Blogman. We're at the Hondai Studios, the
Miller Electric Center. Tony Boselli and James Gladstone live in
studio with us. We'll have the head coach charting in
week one of the regular season on this program each
and every Thursday on the Jaguars Radio Network. Let's get
into some personnel. First couple of days, James, what stood
(13:13):
out to you on the field from the balcony over here?
Speaker 7 (13:15):
You know what, It's been fun to see it. The
competition across all three phases really shine and been some
great moments from each side of the ball, and a
lot of things that are easy to identify and coach
up and lean into in terms of getting better each day.
But to see the level of competition where it's at
(13:36):
players doing what's being asked of them and committing to it,
really showing a sign and buy in has been really neat.
Speaker 6 (13:42):
Right.
Speaker 7 (13:42):
You look at our offense, there's a high level of
complexity attached to it and it requires it's got a
high level of mental demands pre snap to make post
snap easier, and obviously preparation is necessary for that to
look clean. The operation being as clean as it has
been on the offensive side of the ball through two
(14:04):
practices is really something to give praise to. And you
got to point to players who didn't take time off
from their mental preparation and the lead up to these
couple of days, right, Uh, for Trevor to have walked
in and have a one hundred question quiz sprung upon
him just like every other QB and walk away as
the winner of that output. It wasn't just right or
(14:27):
wrong answers, It was the speed at which you were
answering and scored.
Speaker 6 (14:31):
According to that.
Speaker 3 (14:32):
Did they know they were going to have this test?
Speaker 6 (14:33):
They had no idea.
Speaker 7 (14:34):
They were going through a normal meeting and then bam,
right before they left here, you guys go eighty five
Is that right?
Speaker 2 (14:40):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (14:40):
And again again it's not like eighty five out of
one hundred, so to speak, as much as it is
a scoring system that takes into account the speed at
which you're answering having that type of stuff, which obviously
is so.
Speaker 3 (14:52):
What what would be? What would be is great? I
mean I don't like that.
Speaker 5 (14:56):
I wish I think the biggest thing on that, the
bigger thing on that is this. In that room you
had obviously Trevor, Nick Mullins, John Wolford in our rookie Hennigan.
Wolford and Mullens both have been in the system and
operated this system for years, so very familiar with the
(15:17):
language how they call it, can plays. Trevor's first exposure
to this was this spring. I would have expected and
this is not a knock against Trevor. It's a complex system.
As James said that either Nick, Mullens or Wolford would
have been the highest and everything else. To me where
(15:40):
Trevor gets an a in my book, because these are
Wolford and Mullens are both very smart, very intellectual, understanding,
almost coaches on the field in some sense. For Trevor
to have the highest score like to me, I was like, Wow,
pleasant surprise. This is a guy who has dedicated himself
(16:02):
since the day he got here, as he's rehaving a
shoulder with our coaches, to be diligent of understanding the system,
the calls, the checks, the formations, it's multiple formations, and
you don't do that by just the time that you're
required or you're asked to spend here with the coaches.
You have to do that on your own. And for
(16:24):
him to do that shows what kind of pro he
is and the fact that he's achieved that mentally is
a real positive.
Speaker 2 (16:31):
I thought that physically he looks the best he's ever looked.
Do you guys look agree? I mean, I thought he's
looks in great shape that he has been I think
in his career. I don't know what he waited in
I don't.
Speaker 5 (16:45):
Know what he's waited in the past, but I think
he came in in great shape, and like all our
guys did, I think that had a great offseason. I
give it a ton of credit to Eric Ciano, our
strength head strength coach and his staff and the buy
in from our players. I think all of us were
very pleased with the off season. And then a number
of our players. Some went to other places to work out,
(17:05):
go home, which is very normal. A lot of guys,
more than normal, stayed in Jacksonville on their own because
it's all voluntary, can't be coaches involved during that dead period,
to work out at the facility and to really train
and work out together. Trevor taking the receivers once again
to the Bahamas to do that work. The dedication from
the players to be as prepared as they possibly can
(17:27):
before camp was it was very encouraging.
Speaker 3 (17:30):
All right. So I was watching The Hunt, okay on YouTube.
You guys might have heard of it.
Speaker 2 (17:35):
I don't know, okay, And you guys have been stars
on that, you know episode one, two and then three,
and episode three was the Iron Jaguar, and I saw
Trevor lifting weights, okay, And I was sitting there thinking
back to the days of old, and I was going,
I wonder if Trevor was doing power cleans.
Speaker 6 (17:53):
It's a different dynamic nowady, Yeah, it's a.
Speaker 3 (17:55):
Little bit different weightlifting.
Speaker 5 (17:56):
It's not the old days yet for Jerry Paul, Mary's
having Mark Ronell power cleans with the rest of us
in the way.
Speaker 3 (18:03):
The reason I bring that up is that that really happened.
Speaker 5 (18:05):
It did happen our starting quarterbacks. And by the way,
he had one of the highest power queens guys.
Speaker 3 (18:12):
In the weight room and we yeah, he hurt his back.
That was the last day. What are we doing?
Speaker 5 (18:18):
And I think that was ninety six. It was the
last day of his career. He did power cleans. He
was forbidden to do powerqleeens from that moment on.
Speaker 6 (18:24):
Yeah, trust me.
Speaker 7 (18:25):
I asked Tony a lot of questions about what was
it like back in your day, and oh, the story.
Speaker 5 (18:30):
Starting quarterback, it's a little bit different. It's a different deal.
Speaker 2 (18:36):
Tony Sally James Ladstone with us. This is the Liam
Cohen Show, first of the season on the Jaguars Radio Network.
A lot of eyeballs on Travis Hunter. Certainly the fans
and the stands are excited every time he touches the
ball on offense. But the first couple of days he's
also had very light defensive walk through work during special
teams times and they've said every moment of practice is
(18:57):
scripted out for him.
Speaker 3 (18:59):
So far, so good. But what's the next step now
for Travis Hunter.
Speaker 6 (19:03):
You know, I've got to give a ton of credit.
Speaker 7 (19:04):
Liam put a ton of time and attention into what
that progression is going to look like for Travis over
the course of the training camp and obviously building up
for the regular season, but school coming off of our
plan in Ota, seeing them bounce back from offense to
defense every other practice and things like that, more heavily
loaded on offense, obviously knowing that that's such a critical
(19:28):
phase of the calendar year where it is a mental load,
and with the complexity of our offensive system, wanting to
place an emphasis there, and then also learning through that
of where there can be issues or hurdles to overcome when,
as an example, you have a four day weekend right
(19:49):
in front of you and you go offense on Thursday,
your Friday off, Saturday off, Sunday off. Defense is the
next one up for them, and now you have such
a a significant gap between time on task it can
be challenging to recalibrate the mind being detached from it
like that. So using that as a nice example and
(20:11):
building out our training camp approach, I know Liam's got
a really well written out point in obviously will remain
agile as things show themselves or feel like we need
to put more emphasis in a certain area, but with
Travis's commitment, the coach's commitment to making sure that this
is all an option to bring to life here and
(20:31):
there early going is a really cool thing to see
play in real time.
Speaker 2 (20:36):
I'm excited to watch kind of that Travis on offense,
but not just because of him. You've got BTJ, who
is incredibly fast. You've got Diamie Brown who can fly.
So you got three guys that can fly, and Parker
Washington is a powerful, quick, you know, after the catch
(20:56):
kind of thing. Got a lot of weapons there on offense.
But the speed I think of those three guys, I'm
holding up four fingers of those three guys goes back
when we were talking about earlier exactly speak of those
three guys.
Speaker 3 (21:10):
I can't wait to watch those guys play football game.
Speaker 7 (21:12):
Yeah, I think you can certainly point to that as
some version of a superpower of the offense as a whole.
I think it shows up in a number of different
position groups, and that includes our offensive line.
Speaker 6 (21:22):
There's a group of guys up there that.
Speaker 7 (21:25):
Are very mobile, and I think you can expect to
see that, you know, be a part of our game
as we move into this regular season. And obviously, you
know know that sort of what we're leaning into most
can evolve. It may not be the exact same as
what we're seeing now four weeks from now, may not
be the exact same week one as it is week five,
but look forward to seeing the identity of the group
(21:46):
come to life and the them be.
Speaker 6 (21:48):
A part of that here in the early down and
do their part.
Speaker 3 (21:51):
Uh, Tony, are you ready for pads yet?
Speaker 5 (21:54):
Well? Yeah, it was funny when Jeff acts or maybe
it's you jps James, the questions like who stood out out?
And I said, well, in this non football activities that
we're doing right now in the field because we haven't
played football yet, No and all I mean, I've joked
about this every year I was on the show. In
all seriousness, now, sitting where I sit, there's only so
(22:15):
much evaluation you can do of who you are as
a team through what we've done so far. It's a
necessary it's critical. James talked about the mental side of it,
critical of the condition and the strength become a becoming
a team, establishing a culture, how you're going to operate.
All those things are so important. You cannot do that
without the phases. We've gone through this acclamation period is
(22:37):
important to get everyone back in the building.
Speaker 3 (22:40):
You know, well, you've been a way. No, but I'm
saying it's critical. The guy that used to complain about
the way things are great.
Speaker 5 (22:46):
No, No, I'm not saying it's great. I say it's critical.
But you don't know who you are as a football
team until you start playing football. Like we talked about
our offensive line, I think what we've done in the
off season, the work they have done, I think we
have very good depth. But I can't sit here right
now and tell you who we are as an offensive
(23:06):
line and how are they going to work together. You
look at the other side of the line of scrimmage, Trayvon,
josh Man. They had great off seasons. Their bodies look different.
They are hungry to get to another level in their
careers and their games. Mason Smith had did everything we asked,
dedicated works his tail off. Davon Hamilton looks like what
(23:31):
he did. He weighs what we want him to wa
He's weighing right where we want him away. But Jeff,
you and I've watched him for a long time. Before
the back injury, he was ascending to being one of
the better one techniques, gets hurt bad injury impacted them
in a major way. You can see him in his
(23:52):
body getting back to what we saw before, excited for
what he can do. And you just go down the list,
but I can't tell you what any of them are
until you put the pads on it. You see that
competitive in a competitive environment where you're being physical. Because
I think one of the things Liam is harped on
we all believe is we have to be a more
(24:14):
physical team. We have to be able to run the ball,
we have to control the line of scrimmage, and then
on the other side, we got to stop the run,
give ourselves a chance to rush the passer and getting
positive downs and distance for our defense that can attack,
take the ball away, create turnovers. So we are such
an early stage, it's really hard to make a full
evaluation of where we're at until you get and start
(24:35):
playing foot.
Speaker 7 (24:35):
The other element to just lend itself into an understanding of.
Speaker 6 (24:39):
How we'll scout. Our style of scouting.
Speaker 7 (24:43):
It's rooted in authentic football exposures, right the idea of
watching game film, turning on the tape, pressing play quarter
one to quarter four, play after play, letting it speak
to you. The non off authentic football exposures, the one
on one settings where it's offensive line defensive line and
(25:05):
it's not true to form. It's not a real football exposure,
or the on field workouts where there is no enemy
across from you. Combine, those are not authentic football exposures.
We will root ourselves in the city of Football as
a part of our evaluation process. And this just points
(25:26):
back to what Tony's saying. We've seen very good things
as a part of the phases that we've gone through todate.
We will not know who we are until we put
the pads on.
Speaker 2 (25:37):
Upcoming one more time out, We'll come back. Final thoughts
with Tony Boselli and James Gladstone. It's the Liam Cohen
Show on Jaguars Radio.
Speaker 5 (26:00):
Welcome Back.
Speaker 1 (26:01):
The Liam Cohen Show presented by Fresh from Florida continues
right now.
Speaker 2 (26:06):
Final moments with Tony Boselli and James Gladstone on The
Liam Cohen Show presented by a Fresh from Florida J P.
Shadwick with Jeff Logoman and Yeah, tell Liam, we're waiting
on him, you know, sort of the regular season. Glad
to have you guys hear the right now.
Speaker 5 (26:20):
He is a little busy. There's a lot going on.
They're walking through right now to walk through, So you're stuck.
You're stuck with us.
Speaker 3 (26:28):
Do you miss radio Tony?
Speaker 5 (26:30):
Not one bit, JP, I miss hanging out with you guys.
Speaker 2 (26:35):
So so a little different schedule because you know, practice
in the morning and then walk through in the afternoon.
Speaker 5 (26:44):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (26:45):
I like it. As a player, I would like that
just I mean, you know, take advantage of any cool
part of the day you can get, you.
Speaker 5 (26:51):
Know, and not only that it's I mean it's still
been hot. It was hot this morning, but I think
you get away from those afternoon thundershowers where you're forced inside.
We do not want to practice inside if we don't
have to, obviously, and I think just the overall schedule
of how it's laid out, I think it's beneficial for
(27:11):
obviously the weather I just talked about, but also for
our coaches and how they prepare for the day, our players,
the kind of the rhythm they go into. So so far,
so good. Obviously we're early in the down and but
I think everyone right now is operating pretty well in
the schedule change.
Speaker 3 (27:26):
You excited for pads next week?
Speaker 2 (27:28):
Oh?
Speaker 7 (27:28):
I can't wait here those babies pop authentic football exposures
on the horizon. Yeah, we're just step for that to occur,
and I think at that point we'll start to see
some things that we haven't yet and start to pivot
based off of them.
Speaker 2 (27:42):
I think there's always a level of excitement, you know,
when the pads go on. I mean, because you know,
there's a lot of unknowns, and there's some guys that
you watch when they're not in pads and you go, yeah, yeah,
but when they get pads on, they're different. I mean,
that's some guys just distinguishing themselves when the pads go on.
Are there couple guys that you each you know, this
(28:02):
is for each of you to answer on your own.
Are there are a couple guys that you got your
eyes on when the pads go on that you're like,
I can't wait to see him?
Speaker 6 (28:13):
Yeah? I think that's for me.
Speaker 7 (28:14):
It's probably fair to say that that's across the board.
There's never an instance where I'm evaluating somebody that that's
not the case. Everything else is just sort of the
the baseline elements, and until you're in the pads, it's
hard for me to really say with any certainty what
you're actually going to be. But you know, across the
(28:36):
board when when you start to look at the trenches,
that's probably at least where the internal sentiment would be
as well. That was a great rep here in OTAs,
but I have no idea if that would have been
the case had the pad's been on. So from tight
end to interior ol it's certainly top of mind, and
the fact that we're going to ask our receivers to
do a little bit more in that phase of the
(28:56):
game than they're probably used to. Right, knowing that this
system asks that all eleven participate in the run game offensively,
it'll be it'll be exciting to see those guys get
engaged in that.
Speaker 5 (29:08):
Yeah, I got fourteen individual guys and looking forward to
watching you just read the offense the line now, I'm
with James. I mean, I think you go across the board.
Obviously I'm drawn to the offensive line. I was joking
with James as we were doing some scouting work. Uh,
(29:29):
the last couple of days looking at OTA's and different things.
I have to tell myself, I have to tell myself
to look at other positions because I found myself yesterday
we were watching as a group and I missed the
first two plays. Uh, all I watch is the five
guys up front, and then you naturally watch the defensive guys,
(29:51):
and after two players, I'm like, oh gosh, I gotta
watch what the dbs are doing. The ride receivers to
do it, which has actually been a ton of fun
for me. Super thankful to James we work through the
process and allowing me to dive into some of the
cross check scouting, but also looking at the overall thing
because I love the game of football and we've talked
(30:13):
about that for years and it's been a ton of
fun for me to really dive into different positions and
watching our backs and watching the back end. And you
look at a guy like k old Rant saw that
we got out of tu lane and again we're not
in pads, but watching him operate and or whether it's
him or Jordan Lewis positions I probably would watch as
(30:35):
we watch film together, Jeff. Obviously we'd watch every game
and kind of evaluate what we saw, but those are
glances you kind of watching, always drawn back to the trenches,
and so really to dive into that, I think that's
been a privilege for me and a ton of fun
and super thankful for James.
Speaker 7 (30:49):
And hold On talk about I get the luxury of
sitting in a room with a Hall of Fame offensive
lineman when we're evaluating though.
Speaker 6 (30:57):
So yeah, I'm thankful that I get that up as well.
Speaker 7 (31:00):
And I also get to ride the tales of Hey,
Tony's been asked to go be a speaker at a
an OL Mastermind setting that he hadn't gone to in years,
but offer I'm like, hey, would you mind if I come?
Speaker 5 (31:12):
He messed up my he messed up my summer. Hey
did you get write it at all? On Mastermind? I go, yeah,
I'm not going to go what is that? It's a
it's a great event started by Lane Johnson and a
guy named Duke Merriweather's a really good football player and
a great dude, just maybe the best tackle in football
right now.
Speaker 2 (31:30):
Yeah, I love his thoughts on the current state of
the Union. By the way, just my you're a Union guy.
I'll let you we'll talk about that in our time.
But they've been doing it for I don't how many years,
probably seven I think it is now. This was the.
Speaker 6 (31:43):
Equivalent, but they bring in not only.
Speaker 5 (31:46):
NFL, but top college guys because Duke Merriweather is a
guy that has a facility that he trains both college
players and NFL players.
Speaker 3 (31:54):
And who's Duke Merriweather.
Speaker 5 (31:56):
I don't know his.
Speaker 7 (31:57):
Background that well, to be honest, I believe he started
as a high school trainer and eventually a lot of
those players UH began finding success collegiately and and professionally. UH.
And so he's built up a good client tele list
and has a has a pretty big following.
Speaker 6 (32:14):
But obviously in conjunction with Lane, who.
Speaker 7 (32:17):
Was one of his early clients, UH has structured this
this ol masterminds event annually and I think it's either
seventh or eighth year.
Speaker 6 (32:26):
And just like that of tight End, you a Sack summit,
it's the equivalent.
Speaker 5 (32:31):
Yeah, it's great.
Speaker 3 (32:32):
So you talked him into going, Well you weren't going
to go.
Speaker 5 (32:34):
Well, usually I don't go because it's he's vacation exactly right, JP.
I enjoyed the Islands and this year I was happy
to be in UH town and the schedulesn't working. James like,
I think you should go where it's a Dallas because
I think you should go, But he did. Then he
quickly followed up, he goes, can I come with you?
Speaker 4 (32:56):
So, yes, we're working.
Speaker 7 (32:57):
It's been a blast being in the bunker with Tony,
and I'm sure we're both thankful for different elements, but
I'm certain that I am I'm probably reaping more rewards
than he is apart. But get this, So we end
up we were scheduled to stay the night.
Speaker 6 (33:12):
The event gets over.
Speaker 7 (33:13):
Earlier than anticipated, so we're like, wait a minute, there's
one more flight back to Jacksonville.
Speaker 6 (33:18):
So we had flown out seven am.
Speaker 7 (33:21):
We get a chance to get on like a five
pm to get us back here at seven pm, and as.
Speaker 6 (33:28):
A part of that, we're on standby.
Speaker 7 (33:30):
Well Tony gets crammed middle seat economy and it's all
everybody going from Dallas to Jacksonville.
Speaker 6 (33:38):
So there's plenty of people that know who's sitting You
think you're in.
Speaker 5 (33:42):
The gym and me walking past everybody to the back crammed,
and I think James got a kick out of it.
I'm sitting there, but I'll tell you what to get
home twenty four hours early. That's cool when you know
that you're getting ready to go to the camp. And
he listened. Next seven months it is full, full speed
and can't wait for It's exciting, but you relish any
(34:03):
moment you can have in that time off at home
and with family. And James like, what do you think
about going back? I'm like, we'll be a coach and
He's like, you okay with that? I'm like, hell, yeah,
let's go. I don't care what pain I'm meant for
the next two hours, two.
Speaker 3 (34:17):
And a half hours, I'll be fine. Those poor people
you had to sit down, Yeah, man.
Speaker 5 (34:22):
They suffered more than I did.
Speaker 3 (34:25):
James, Tony, it's been a pleasure. We did forty minutes.
About that.
Speaker 5 (34:28):
Well, that means next week we only do twenty No no.
Speaker 2 (34:33):
Week.
Speaker 3 (34:34):
Thanks guys, Appreciate you.
Speaker 5 (34:35):
Guys, appreciate you.
Speaker 3 (34:36):
Tony Boselli joining us and we're back with more after this.
It's a Liam Cohen Show. I'm a Jaguars Radio Network
Welcome back.
Speaker 1 (34:47):
The Liam Cohen Show, presented by Fresh from Florida, continues
right now, and it.
Speaker 2 (34:52):
Continues on the Jaguars Radio Network, presented by the University
of Florida, number one university in the US News and
World Reports, number one state for education.
Speaker 7 (35:01):
J P.
Speaker 2 (35:01):
Shadwick, Jeff Logoman, forty minutes with Tony Boselli and James Gladstone.
Speaker 3 (35:07):
That was good stuff.
Speaker 2 (35:07):
Holy smokes, that was good stuff, you know, And I
appreciate them taking the time to do this during training
camp when the head coach is incredibly busy, because it
makes our job easier. And and you know what, I
get wildly entertained. Entertained by hanging out with those two guys.
You learn a lot about the operation and how this
(35:28):
offseason's gone, their mindset of the GM and what he's
looking for. I mean, it's just fascinating to hear. Yeah,
it's it's good stuff, and I can't wait for the
next next Thursday.
Speaker 3 (35:39):
I guess they're back next Thursday. Yeah, that's what they
just said. I guess. Okay, I guess they say.
Speaker 2 (35:43):
So they have established now that they're they're going to
be on for forty minutes.
Speaker 3 (35:47):
So you know, that's what it is. You know, it
is what it is. It's certainly what it is.
Speaker 2 (35:52):
Let's come back in a moment, and we've got to
dig into some position group battles when we come back.
Speaker 3 (35:56):
How about that. I'm all for it.
Speaker 2 (35:58):
Okay, let's do the not on big guy categories. Yeah,
because like you said, there's no there's no football happening yet.
It's the Liam Cohen Show on Jaguars Radio.
Speaker 5 (36:18):
Welcome Back.
Speaker 1 (36:19):
The Liam Cohen Show, presented by Fresh from Florida continues
right now.
Speaker 2 (36:24):
Welcome back j P. Shadrick with Jeff Logman on Liam
Cohen Show. The head coach will join us at the

Jags Social channels today through August fifth, and you can
(36:45):

season for a chance to win an autographed Prowler throwback jersey.
So check out Jaguars Social channels today and the Predict
the Prowlers Sweepstakes.
Speaker 3 (37:01):
Looking forward to.
Speaker 2 (37:02):
That, well, I got to say that incredibly refreshing listening
to James Gladstone when he talked about the evaluation process
of players and how you know the evaluation process has
got to include the contact, the physicality, actual football, actual football, right.
(37:27):
He was not saying that the combine is a throwaway tool,
but he was saying that there are things that are
incredibly important, and that is the football aspect of it,
of actually playing football, you know, and I'm not trying
to point to anybody that has been here or anybody
at any other organization, but if you want to find
(37:49):
the best football players, okay for your team, watch when
they've played football and evaluate that part of it and
not so much the forty times the.
Speaker 4 (38:04):
Four cone or.
Speaker 2 (38:07):
Broad jump or vertical jump or all these other things.
Speaker 3 (38:10):
Look, I think that's all interesting.
Speaker 2 (38:14):
Okay, do you have numbers attached to them and you
can grade players and rate players. Yeah, And it's an
easy way analytics wise, is it. Well this guy he's
faster than this guy, and this guy, well, Look, the
hard part and the part that AI and analytics can't evaluate,
is if a guy's a good football player. I mean,
(38:34):
the trained eye has to be able to evaluate that.
And that point of view, to me is incredibly refreshing.
And that one of the reasons why I'm very excited
about the three guys that are in place right now.
Tony's a football guy, James is a football guy, believes
in watching and evaluating football, and obviously Liam Cohen is
(38:56):
a football guy. And the one thing that I love
about Liam the more that I watch him. Only been
around him a little bit, but watching him, I love
the edge that he has. I think there's I think
all coaches need to have a lot. People have to
have a little bit of an edge to be successful
in this game. And I'm excited about the three of
those guys. I think this organization is in great hands.
Speaker 3 (39:18):
Let's come back in a moment.
Speaker 2 (39:19):
We'll get to some of those position battles we promised
some skill guys.
Speaker 3 (39:23):
Sorry to distract you there. It's a great comment. Yeah,
we love hearing from it. It's been a while. I
know it's been a while.
Speaker 4 (39:28):
This is The Liam Cohen Show and the Jaguars Radio Network.
Speaker 3 (39:33):
Welcome back.
Speaker 1 (39:34):
The Liam Cohen Show, presented by Fresh from Florida, continues
right now.
Speaker 2 (39:38):
J P. Shadrick, Jeff Logman, Glad you're with us. We
are back for the twenty twenty five season. It is
The Liam Cohen Show. James Gladston, Antony Boselli joining us
earlier in the program, looking forward to the podcast version
of that go check that out again.
Speaker 3 (39:53):
Position battles.
Speaker 2 (39:54):
As they were talking about logs it's kind of hard
to look at the trenches right now, but in terms
of skill, guys both sides of the ball give me
the most intriguing position battle on each side, offense and
defense right now. I think the two position groups that
we had talked about during Happy Hour, to me are
(40:15):
the most interesting. Running back I think is going to
be highly competitive, and I think there will be some
changes on a week to week basis until they find
a hot hand in some situations.
Speaker 3 (40:27):
The third down.
Speaker 2 (40:29):
Back position is going to be up for grabs, just
like I think the workhorse position is going to be
open for competition. I don't think there will be one
guy that fulfills both roles. I think that will be
divvied up between two guys and maybe even three guys
at some point. The defensive backfield, I think is also
very interesting to me, and it starts with a conversation
(40:51):
about Travis Hunter. How much will he be available, what
packages will he be a part of, which packages will
he not be a part of. And I think that
leads into Okay, now that you've established that, now you
kind of know where the battles for the rest of
it are. But until you know the roles and define
(41:12):
the playtime amount and the packages for Travis Hunter. I
think then you really don't know where it's going to
be at. But I can tell you this, whether Travis
Hunter is playing defense or not, there is an interesting.
Speaker 3 (41:26):
Battle going on with that whole back end.
Speaker 2 (41:30):
If there is one guy that maybe has a lot,
it's Tyson Campbell George Lewis. Other than that, I think
that there's open competition there at all the other positions
in the background.
Speaker 4 (41:44):
And as Kevin Ellie said today, you know it might
not be over.
Speaker 2 (41:47):
It could be a week to week. Let's see who
is the better matchup. Right, Hey, maybe we don't need
Travis on defense this week because the matchup's not great,
or we have a better matchup somebody who matches up
against their receivers better, or you know, that could change
the whole dynamic.
Speaker 3 (42:02):
You know, they really can.
Speaker 2 (42:03):
And I think that's going to be a fun to watch.
And you know a lot of times, like when you
talk about your opinion on something like when it comes
to a stock or something like that, you know you
have a you know what is it. You're bullish on
something or your bearish or whatever. Yes, okay, I'm bullish
on the back end the secondary for two reasons. One,
(42:23):
I think they've added a lot of talent the two
different ways that they could and free agency, then also
with the draft. But then also because of Campanili or Campanelli,
whatever you want to say his last name is. I
think that he's going to bring a standard of execution
to this defense that is going to make last year's
(42:46):
defense look even worse than really what it was. Because
the Green Bay Packers in the past couple of years
have been incredibly thorough and an incredibly mistake free and
highly competitive, and I expect him to instill that same
thing here in Jacksonville. Come back in a moment, Final
thoughts on the opening Liam Cohen Show of the season
(43:08):
on Jaguars Radio.
Speaker 1 (43:16):
Welcome Back The Liam Cohen Show, presented by Fresh from
Florida continues right now.
Speaker 2 (43:22):
The final couple of moments here on The Liam Cohen Show.
JP Shadick with Jeff Logoman. The upcoming schedule for the Jaguars.
They'll practice tomorrow morning at eight forty five or eight
forty or so officially, so that'll be open to the public.
Speaker 3 (43:37):
Of course.
Speaker 2 (43:38):
Jaguars dot Com Slash training camp players off Saturday then
they're back at it. Logs on Sunday in spider pads.
The shoulder pads come on Monday and Tuesday before and
off day Wednesday. Yeah, I mean, I'm gonna be here
tomorrow with you, and I'm more obvious with being announced
in practice, but the excitement to me really stars it's
(44:00):
on Monday when the pads get real. And the one
thing I will say, I appreciate and Liam Cones's interview today,
he was asked a question about pads and all of that,
and along the lines of what Jane Fladstone said about
the evaluation process pads is the most important thing and
contact and playing football. Liam Cones said that he's going
to take advantage of every opportunity that he can with
(44:22):
the pads to get his team ready to play football.
And I love hearing that because just like you said
and they said that, you know, to evaluate football, you
got to do the football things. Thanks to James Gladstone,
Tony Basselli, Joe Fortunado, Brent Reever, David Shoe, our entire
crew for Jeff Logerman, I'm JP Shadwick. Thank you for
(44:43):
listening to the Liam Cohen's Joe and the Jaguars Radio Network,
