Speaker 1 (00:03):
Hello, and welcome to the tennis.
Speaker 2 (00:05):

the American capital Tristan Schools, Fonseca, a maiden top fifty

final wish. Bouchard wows her home crowd in Montreal. All
that and more ahead with me, zave muellbark no breathe
this week, have that breath of fresh air. We've got
our number one fill in, Jamie.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
Fallis Hi, thanks for having me.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
We're thrilled, oh excited.
Speaker 4 (00:31):
I feel like I have big shoes to feel Todaytely not.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
Here that she has little feet, but she wears very
large shoes. True.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
And across the desk, we've got another number one, former
junior world number one.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
Luke Savo.
Speaker 5 (00:43):
Good to be here, guys, excited.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
Good, you look excited, Pump, look at that Teethy grin
and a warm welcome back to the tennis, to that tennis.
I can't even talk some surrounded by tennis players and
I'm feeling inadequate. All of you know what you're doing
and I don't. It's former WTA doubles number one Storm Hunter.
Speaker 6 (01:01):
Hello, it's a bit like Storms in the house, this
instimulated with you on the host seating.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
James, Well, it feels a bit weird.
Speaker 4 (01:12):
I feel like Luke and I should be sitting there
together and now I'm on this side.
Speaker 5 (01:16):
Any bearings a little bit?
Speaker 1 (01:17):
Yeah? Are you okay that?
Speaker 2 (01:19):
Like Jamie came in a bit later to this podcast
family than you, and she got the call up for hosting.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
You're all right with that?
Speaker 5 (01:26):
I was going to make a complaint probably half of
the pod. Maybe I'll head to the front office or something, but.
Speaker 3 (01:31):
I'm going to send you the hr email that I
con I could try and go.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
Yeah, that's right, you can have my job. That's fine.
In everything, I'm coming for it. Yeah, it shows the
steel is there. Well, it's really exciting to have all
of you here. We've got a heap to talk about.
Last week was a bit of a quiet week for
in the tennis world. Still a bit to talk about.
But this week I've got pages and pages are things
to discuss, So let's just jump straight into storm Watch.
Speaker 7 (02:00):
Oh.
Speaker 8 (02:00):
I just love that sound.
Speaker 9 (02:01):
That's the only reason I come on here just to
hear that.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
Guys, but talks about your European summer. What's the latest
europe was?
Speaker 9 (02:09):
It was okay, it was a good trip.
Speaker 6 (02:11):
We had quite a few very bad travel days, which,
as most tennis players know, it happens like losing luggage,
train delays and whatnot. But yeah, I achieved my goal
of getting inside top hundred for doubles, so I was
really really happy with that. Home for just yea a
quick few weeks. I'm actually heading off on Tuesday to Cincinnati.
(02:32):
So the injury that I had that made me pull
out of wind Wooden has healed, So yeah, that's great.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
And since he's that's kind of the real start of
the US swing, that's when all eyes are on there.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
How are you going to approach since he this year
do you think?
Speaker 6 (02:48):
To be honest, I'm just happy to be there, happy
to go and compete, be healthy. This time last year
I was stuck at home with my achilles injury and
grinding through this Melbourne winter.
Speaker 9 (02:59):
So I'm really really happy to be back playing.
Speaker 6 (03:01):
And yeah, since he nothing to lose, go out there,
get match practice, compete again to the best players in
the world and give it a red.
Speaker 1 (03:08):
Hot crack brilliant.
Speaker 5 (03:10):
What about you, old mate, I'm heading over to the
States myself actually in a different capacity, not with Cricket NFL,
NFL Tryout NFL.
Speaker 1 (03:22):
Yes, the Cricket of North America.
Speaker 5 (03:24):
Yeah, I've got the call up to do some weeks
with James McCabe, so a young up and coming. Ossie
is about one hundred and sixty in the world, so
looking forward to that. He's in US qualifying at the moment.
And yeah, I'm going to go up to Sydney for
a few days prior do some do some few days
with him, bit of training and then and then head over.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
So that's great. Did he go through their college system
or no.
Speaker 5 (03:46):
He's sort of a late late bloomer. He was a
bit of a swimmer when he was younger, so quite
fresh to tennis, but the reach then got he a
lanky fella. Yeah, he's pretty strong. I won't argue with him,
that's for sure, but he's got a bit of a
cannon and I don't know him super well, but looking
forward to the challenge. Should be good.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
And Jamie still got the busted wing I do. How's
the shoulder going.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
It's good.
Speaker 4 (04:12):
Five weeks post surgery yesterday, so have another week with
the sling on and yeah, just slowly progressing. It feels
like it's been an eternity, but only five weeks down
the track and still a couple of months to go.
But yeah, it's been a joy to be home and
to come in every every week to be on the pod.
Oh that's great highlight.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
You're wearing it for fashion choices, but no, it's actually
serving to get you on.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
Yeah, absolutely after you can have it after I want
to be like wrapped up like a straight Jacket's just the.
Speaker 9 (04:38):
Last one without the sling.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
Yeah, this is the last pod with the sling.
Speaker 4 (04:42):
So so next week you can just be doing handstands.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
Yeah, five fives, I'll try.
Speaker 4 (04:48):
I don't know if I'll be able to reach for
my cup, but we can give it a go. Might
have to do the assisted, but yeah, I've had some
highs and lows last couple of five weeks.
Speaker 3 (04:56):
But yeah, it's been journey and still.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
Well that is very refreshed to hear good stuff. We'll
get you a crazy straw for your cup next week.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
Don't worry.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
I think it's time on the tennis to jump into
the tennis. So what caught your eye, Luke? What caught
your eye?
Speaker 5 (05:09):
And was Alex Demona winning his tenth title in Washington
last week and saving three championship points. I think everyone
saw those three pretty miracuous, one one including a lob
that I think just clipped the line, so pretty amazing.
David Chakeina has never won an ATP title. He's lost
in two finals and the other one he had championship points, also,
(05:32):
so pretty brutal for him. But we're all pulling for Alex.
Back to eight in the world, dropped two sets to
win the title, wins his tenth title and goes into
Toronto in great form. So great to see.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
So he grew up in playing against the blokey beat
in Spain, he did.
Speaker 5 (05:53):
And then about full seven, Yeah, we saw him consoling, Yeah,
David Chakna after the match, and I think I saw
a clip today and Alex sort of said, you know,
we're human beings. End of the day and David ch
Vacina obviously pretty brutal loss there, so went on the
other side and hugged it out a little bit. But yeah,
(06:14):
just really just sum Alex up his fighting spirit he
epitomizes that and amazing to see over three hours gets
his tenth title.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
Yeah, still is it better or worse? What would you rather?
Is it easier to play a friend or an enemy.
Speaker 6 (06:29):
I think it's easy to play an enemy because you
can kind of use that motivation and you're not so
I guess you don't know them as well, so you're
actually just not even thinking about the person on the
other side. I find when you're playing with a friend
or someone that you've grown up with, it feels like
there's more to the occasion than there actually is. And
like Luke said, I think it's a credit to Demon
(06:50):
and the type of person here. Is the fact that
he won his title tenth title, coming back from three
match points down and kind of took the time out
straight after the match make the moment so much about him,
went and consoled David Chvakina, and I think probably amongst
the locker room, they would know that it's the second
time that he's been match points up and hasn't come
(07:11):
away with the title, and that would definitely hurt. You
could even see during the match at five to four
when Demon hit that lob and won that point that
davidosch Forakina had his.
Speaker 9 (07:20):
Head in like his head in his hands.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
It looks like he was defeated.
Speaker 3 (07:24):
He was kind of over the net right when you
lost that point.
Speaker 6 (07:26):
Yeah, and you just looked at that moment and you
were like, Demon's got this.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
Yeah, he's in his head now, yeah and just needs
to follow through.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
Boy did he was pretty epic huge one.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
Yeah, so that will be He's the fifth Ozzi to
win the Washington title, which is amazing, and he after
getting ten, he's now nipping at the heels Pat Rafter
and Mark Philip Philipoosis on eleven, so into the record
books for Young Demon.
Speaker 5 (07:51):
Yeah, it's great to see another title. And as I say,
going into Toronto into the Masters this week with great form,
I think he'll still happily admit that it's that next
level that he wants to take, and he's so tough
at that. I guess anyone outside the top ten right
now to beat him. But it's obviously that next top four,
(08:11):
top five guys in the world that he wants to
sort of take down and establish himself with that sort
of that sort of crowd.
Speaker 4 (08:18):
So definitely playing Toronto right Yeah, Yeah, he's just starting now.
Speaker 1 (08:22):
That's great.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
So, I mean this has really set him up for
the US hard court Swing we're going to see another
title out of New York.
Speaker 1 (08:28):
Do we think for Young Demon.
Speaker 5 (08:32):
It's definitely tough. I mean, I think I saw a
clip the other day that he just keeps on rocking
up every Grand Slam, and he's making your fourth round quarterfinal,
and I think if we're on us, we probably just
need a little bit of a draw opening because those
top two especially are pretty unreal right now, and if
they keep going, he has to beat both of them
to win a title, to win a Slam, and it's difficult,
(08:54):
to say the least, So we need a little bit
of love. But he's definitely showing up every Grand Slam
and getting into that second week consistently, so it's great
to see.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
Yeah, So we actually had a bit of a moment
in Washington. Who've got a clip of him during his
championship speech.
Speaker 10 (09:10):
And last but not least, I want to thank Jocelyn
from Player Services because I had no shirts coming into
this week, and thanks to her amazing work, she stayed
up late and so the patches on my shirt. So
I appreciate you. I appreciate everything you do and thank
(09:34):
you very much.
Speaker 1 (09:35):
You're a lifesaver.
Speaker 2 (09:37):
Poor little Demon forgot he's kids. Look, it's happened to
the best of us. Who he has forgotten something while
out on tour.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
I've been pretty good. I don't think i've forgotten.
Speaker 4 (09:47):
I think when I was younger, like we used to
do morning sessions at I'm exposing myself a little bit here.
We should do morning sessions at six point thirty, so
you had to get up at five. It was dark,
and I sometimes used to put my top on inside
out because I would get dressed in the dark and
I would rock up to training in my tops inside out.
But I've never forgotten like a match, kid or anything.
Speaker 1 (10:07):
Okay, that's fair. It was dark. I mean I just
checked too. Yeah, you were at least a twelve.
Speaker 5 (10:16):
I think I was playing the twelves Nationals here at
Melbourne Park and got out to my match. It was cold,
had the pants on. I went to take the pants off. Undies. Yes,
no short. So we're starting at the Exhibition Street in
the city. My dad he was not happy to fly
back grab some shorts. So I've really learned my lesson
(10:38):
now to just not wear pants and just to make
sure I can see the shorts I've got on.
Speaker 4 (10:44):
But you have to play the match with the tracksuit
until your dad came.
Speaker 5 (10:47):
I don't know, yeah, I don't know the details, maybe, but.
Speaker 2 (10:51):
Okay, yeah, got a photo of Luke playing in just
his jocks. There is a backstory to it, and it's fine.
Speaker 9 (10:58):
Still me, I'm a little bit like Jay.
Speaker 6 (11:00):
I haven't forgotten anything for a match, but I have
forgotten shoes for practice, and that obviously didn't go down
well because they were at the hotel and the hotel
was about an hour away, so practice did get canceled.
Speaker 9 (11:14):
I was young as well.
Speaker 6 (11:15):
And kind of use that experience to make sure I
never forgot anything else in my career.
Speaker 9 (11:20):
So I'd always.
Speaker 6 (11:21):
Packed my bag at nighttime before the next day to
make sure I have everything, and then triple check it
that night, and then in the morning to make sure
that I hadn't.
Speaker 2 (11:30):
So you've never turned up at the airport, no passport,
things like that, not yet.
Speaker 4 (11:34):
Touch with Yes, here we go, not forgotten by passport.
But I was in a rush and then we got
to the airport. I think we're in Thailand, and I
was trying to check in but they couldn't find my
name in the system, and I'd spelled my name incorrectly,
But I don't know if I had like physically done
it or it was autocorrect the way that I spelled
(11:54):
my first name. So I had to pay change of
name fee and stuff like that, and I just onto
the fly.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
Could have been worse.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
Worse, might as have gone and change your name Now
I am Janet Fallers. Now I'm going to go with
that next time. All right, Storm, what's caught your eye
this week?
Speaker 6 (12:11):
Yeah, So what's caught my eye this week is that
we have a new women's doubles world number one, America's
Taylor Townshend. She took the number one spot this this
week for the very first time. She ended up winning
the title Washington, DC, partnering with Jean Shui, defeating Dolhid
and Kennon sixty one sixty one. And it's amazing. It's
the fiftieth women's player to hold the title and.
Speaker 9 (12:33):
The first mother, Oh wow, really to hold a number
one title.
Speaker 1 (12:38):
Wow, that's insane, crazy.
Speaker 9 (12:40):
So yeah, amazing, amazing story Taylor.
Speaker 6 (12:43):
We know that as a young junior she was world
number one and was super talented as a young player,
kind of struggled a little bit from her late teens
into her early twenties and just such a hard worker.
That's something that I've noticed on tours that she's always
out on the court trying to get better in singles,
in double She's always out there competing.
Speaker 9 (13:02):
And she had her son Aiden in twenty twenty one.
Speaker 6 (13:04):
And she's spoken very publicly about how much strength and
motivation that he gives her, and that she's doing this
for him and for her to achieve that ranking in
DC with her friends and family and her son Aidan,
there was just a magical moment for her and congratulations.
Speaker 9 (13:19):
It's incredible.
Speaker 1 (13:20):
Yeah, it's amazing. So can you explain something to me?
Speaker 2 (13:23):
So she needed to reach the semifinals to secure that
number one spot, Like, how do ranking points work?
Speaker 1 (13:31):
Who's best placed?
Speaker 9 (13:32):
Yeah, to school our audience, very very interesting.
Speaker 6 (13:35):
Tennis is such a unique sport that the rankings are
based on a fifty two week cycle, so depending on
your ranking points from each tournament last one full year,
So at any moment in time, someone could become the
new world number one. And for Taylor, she knew that
based on the live rankings that she had an opportunity
in DC to play and if she made semifinals or better,
(13:56):
that she was going to clinch that spot, and she
did say publicly that she went to DC with the
mission to become world number one, which I thought was yeah,
pretty cool and just showed how much achieving that goal
and that dream meant to her. Because she actually missed
out on playing in Montreal singles. She actually, yeah, sacrificed that,
I guess you would say, to try and make the
(14:17):
world number one.
Speaker 9 (14:18):
And yeah, it's kind of weird because it happened in.
Speaker 6 (14:21):
The semi final, and you see so many different sports
you wouldn't achieve You've got to win it and you
have that moment of elation, and for her it happened
in the semifinal.
Speaker 9 (14:30):
It was a it was for one in the first set,
and it was a walkover, so she probably didn't get
that that moment.
Speaker 6 (14:36):
Yeah, so yeah, but at the same time, yeah, and
then it's like, well, that was cool, Crap, I've got
to play again in a couple of days, Yeah exactly. Yeah, Yeah,
but she did say, you know, in the finals, she
wanted to go out and play like the world number
one tennis player, and she did that.
Speaker 9 (14:51):
They won very convincingly, and yeah, I always.
Speaker 6 (14:55):
Loved watching her play don't necessarily love competing against her.
Speaker 7 (14:58):
She makes it very difficult on the well, from what
I understand, quite a good player. So so now that
she's number one, what does that kind of open up
for her? Do you think both professionally when she's going out,
does she have to wait in line?
Speaker 1 (15:13):
You're exactly right, that's a great person.
Speaker 6 (15:18):
Well, when I was number one, I didn't play the
you know, i'm world number one?
Speaker 9 (15:24):
Yeah, do you know who I am? What is your ranking?
I'm number one? No, I definitely didn't didn't play that card.
I to be completely honest and transparent.
Speaker 6 (15:33):
Commercially probably doesn't mean nothing's really going to change. I
think doubles tennis still doesn't do a great enough job
as a sport to promote our doubles players and promote
that she's well number one, And yeah, commercially, there's not
much that comes out of it. But it's something that
do you have that no one can ever take away
from you, And it's a lifelong dream. It was for
(15:54):
me a lifelong dream too, And even sometimes to this
day I pinch myself and I'm like, wow, I can't
believe at one point I was literally the best player
in the world like.
Speaker 9 (16:03):
The best person as well. What I do yeah and.
Speaker 6 (16:06):
Yeah kind of gives you this amazing strength and I just, yeah,
spent my life dedicated to tennis and the same as
what Taylor's done as well. And I think it's just
something that you can achieve that, yeah, you have for
the rest of your life.
Speaker 4 (16:18):
Did they give you something like a trophy for being
world number one or is there anything?
Speaker 3 (16:24):
There's nothing, There's nothing.
Speaker 1 (16:26):
So there is a world a certificate.
Speaker 3 (16:27):
Yeah, I would love a certificate.
Speaker 1 (16:29):
You can maybe make one and we'll bust one up
for you.
Speaker 6 (16:33):
There is a world number one trophy and it's very,
very beautiful. So Taylor will now do like a photo
shoot with the trophy maybe in Montreal, and what.
Speaker 9 (16:41):
They do, it's quite big.
Speaker 6 (16:43):
And they added diamond for every new world number one,
so there would be fifty diamonds on.
Speaker 9 (16:49):
It's like a big tennis ball. And your name goes
on the trophy, so.
Speaker 2 (16:53):
It's so it gets more valuable every time the name
has changed. Yes, right, I'll wait until there's one hundred
and four. I flog it, okay, and we'll go all right, Jamie,
what about you? What caught your eye this week?
Speaker 4 (17:03):
I'm gonna go with Jeanie Bouchard. Last week she announced
her retirement from professional tennis, and I feel like when
she did play her best tennis twenty thirteen fourteen fifteen,
the era that she did plan in, I felt like
she got overlooked and I feel like we haven't given
her enough recognition since she has retired, and unfortunately she
(17:25):
just lost losing to Benchic second round in Montreal.
Speaker 3 (17:29):
So I just wanted to go over some of her.
Speaker 4 (17:31):
Career highlights and talk about how good her career actually was.
Speaker 1 (17:36):
Absolutely take us through it.
Speaker 4 (17:38):
Yeah, So she reached Korea high world number five. She
was the first Canadian to break into the top five,
and that was in twenty fourteen, and I think, within itself,
that's a pretty huge achievement. That year she pretty much
made AO semifinals, Roland Garris semifinals, She made final of
Wimbledon and also made the US Open four round. So
(18:01):
at the time, she was aged nineteen to twenty years
old and she was kind of that next age group
of girls transitioning from junior tennis to senior tennis.
Speaker 3 (18:10):
And she actually did win Wimby juniors as well.
Speaker 4 (18:13):
So I think her career has been pretty damn good
within itself and.
Speaker 1 (18:19):
Quite a CV.
Speaker 3 (18:20):
Quite a CV.
Speaker 5 (18:21):
So twenty fourteen year you know, two Semis one final
at the age of nineteen twenty, it's pretty amazing and
most improved player twenty fourteen junior Wimby Champ two years prior.
I feel like I definitely overlooked her as well. So
I was one of those people that you were saying
overlooked her, And I feel like when she made that
(18:43):
final of Wimbledon and she really announced herself as one
of those one of those next crop challenging for Slam titles.
So she kind of, yeah, obviously fell off the pace
a little bit there, But sometimes I feel like when
you just roar onto the scene so quickly, you still
have quite a few things to sort of learn and
people can sort of work you out a little bit
(19:05):
as well.
Speaker 4 (19:05):
So but I feel like a lot of people do go, oh,
she did fall off the scene a little bit, but
when you look at her results like that, there are
incredible results to be playing with Serena Sharapova, Like that
era of women that she was playing against, like that's
a top tier.
Speaker 2 (19:21):
Yeah, yeah, she was definitely not fighting against it, but yeah,
she was in an era of you know, some of
the best women's players we've ever seen.
Speaker 4 (19:30):
Yeah, and now that she has, as we've seen online transitions,
what is her next step? Is she going to do
that full time? I know, I'm well, I think there
might be a contract in place. I don't know if
that once that contract with the Pickaball finishes, does she
continue that? So it would be really interesting to see
what she does in the next chapter.
Speaker 9 (19:49):
We grew up. We were the same age, so we
played some juniors. You still are, well, yeah, that is true.
Speaker 6 (19:55):
We are the same age, so yeah, I grew up
you know as a yeah, nineteen twenty year old. W
she was achieving all that, it was like, wow, that's inspiring,
Like that's the age group that I've played against and
competed against in juniors, and they're already kind of announcing
themselves on the world stage.
Speaker 9 (20:10):
And for me, I just loved the way that she played.
Speaker 6 (20:13):
She was super aggressive, She hugged the bassline, she took
time away from all her opponents, and redirected the ball.
I think that's why she kind of came onto the
scene so quickly, is that her game.
Speaker 9 (20:21):
Style was so niwful and unique.
Speaker 6 (20:24):
And that people didn't know how to handle that lack
of time on the court, and she did that incredibly well.
And yeah, I just remember looking up to her because
I was like, that's what I want to achieve. I
want to be in the Windwooden Final at nineteen twenty
years old, and I was out playing ITF's, you know,
fifteen k's trying to grind my way through.
Speaker 9 (20:42):
So it was very inspiring to.
Speaker 6 (20:44):
See someone so young kind of take it to the
best in the world.
Speaker 2 (20:47):
Yeah, definitely, Well, Jenny, you will be missed, but I'm
sure we'll still be saying a lot of you, So
congratulations on an incredible career in tennis and have fun
on pickaball.
Speaker 1 (20:58):
I'm talking as if she's listening. I'm sure she does.
Speaker 3 (21:01):
I feel like there's a sorry just to please.
Speaker 4 (21:04):
On the ITF tour at the moment, the next crop
of girls that are coming up, you can definitely see
they've watched Genie and they've idolized her, because a lot
of these girls are starting to swing like her and
play like her and hold baseline. And you walk around
the tour, especially at the IF events, and you're like, oh,
I know.
Speaker 3 (21:19):
Who your favorite play was? When you were growing up.
Speaker 4 (21:21):
So I feel like there's a lot of those girls
that are hugging bassline holding and pretty much have the
exact same swings as Genie. So I definitely think she
was more influential than a lot of people.
Speaker 11 (21:31):
Oh wow, I've said, what's caught your eye? Great question,
Well done, Free, You're in trouble. So this week another
Ossie we're talking about demon. Earlier, Tristan school Kate took
out Ralphonseca, the young Brazilian that the world is looking
at and everyone is very excited. But school Kate, equally
exciting and right now more exciting, took him down seven
(21:53):
sixty six y four in Round of one twenty eight
in Toronto.
Speaker 1 (21:57):
Everyone see this one.
Speaker 5 (21:59):
I did absolutely enormous wine this one and Fonseca, I
think he's sort of touted as one of the challenges
to you know, some of these top guys at Grand
Slams and very lively conditions in Toronto, which I think helped,
or yeah, was helping Tristan, serving big, playing aggressive, really
taking it too Seca. But first top fifty win for
(22:23):
Tristan ninety eight in the live ranking, So yeah, broke
in amazing hopefully holds I think he will, and one
of my good mates, and just to see how he's
gone about it the last three or four years and
ticking all the boxes, working super hard and has copped
a few losses here and there, but just shows up
the next week and I feel like it's testament to
(22:46):
his consistency and he's work ethic.
Speaker 2 (22:48):
Great to see, yeah, definitely, So how do you think
he's feeling right now? Is it just full of nerves
or is it that right job done there onto the
next Now, I.
Speaker 5 (22:56):
Think he's striving for more. I think obviously everyone can
sort of talk that top hundred is the initial goal, right,
that's the big sort of landmark that you shoot for
as a player singles and doubles. So now that he's
inside that, he's going for more, and I think he's
got a lot of self belief. I think even when
he played Janick Center at the Aussie Open start of
(23:17):
the year, yes, definitely took the first set and was
sort of taking it right up to him. So I
think his game style can definitely hold up at that
top level of the tour. And he's so physical. He's
a physical beast and it's really good to say.
Speaker 4 (23:31):
It's good to see like he's played so many matches
this year and physically he's still taking it to the best.
And yeah, just breaking into top hundred, I'm sure he
can do so much more. There's so many more weeks
of tennis left.
Speaker 2 (23:43):
Yeah, definitely. So he's twenty four, so he's kind of
he's still young. Like this could be not to be
too quick to jump at shadows, but could be the
beginning of a really big year, really big career. It's
pretty exciting stuff.
Speaker 5 (23:54):
Yeah. I think him and James McCabe as well, the
other two sort of that. I guess Australian tennis men's
tennis are sort of looking at to well. Tristan's inside
the hundred now, but James is probably next, and Lee
to one of my good mates and oh my just
secret and so on, so hopefully we can get a
few more in there. I think the Aussie women have
(24:16):
really showed this year that sort of started to hunt
in packs a little bit and get a few more
inside the top hundred as well. I think the men
are going to do that as well. And yep, it's
great to see Tristan's really just started at the Hardby,
He's won a couple of challenges. He's really been very
consistent at that level for the past few years and
he's reaping the rewards now and it's great to see.
Speaker 12 (24:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (24:38):
So, I mean, it's great to see an underdog kind
of story come up. And it got me thinking about
other ossies who have taken down gods and goats amongst them.
So the first one that came to my mind was
Sam stows A defeating Screena Williams in twenty eleven to
win the US Startle any other ossie takedowns that come
to mind for.
Speaker 6 (24:53):
You, guys, I have one that I was thinking about
you definitely not me, but was my one of my
best friends and former housemate, Darius Savill. Twenty fifteen, she
defeated Maria Sharapova in the second round of the Miami
Open and I was home at the time.
Speaker 9 (25:13):
I could have been.
Speaker 6 (25:13):
I don't know if you were home as well, And
I remember just that was just a huge win. Maria
Sharapova was number two ranked at the time. Obviously for
US our age group was an idol growing up.
Speaker 1 (25:23):
We idolized her sugar povera herself.
Speaker 6 (25:25):
Yes exactly, and Dasha had just broken into top hundred.
That was a first week that she debuted at ninety
seven in the world. And to defeat Maria Sharapova second
round of Miami Open was amazing. The score was seven
six six three, and I just remember thinking, wow, like
I was so proud of Dash. It was an amazing win.
I think that was her breakthrough year and just set
up her whole year. And it's just you take down
(25:46):
one of these giants and it's like you can't quite
believe it, because I mean, I know Dasha did definitely believe.
She believes in herself, always has and she thought she
could do it. But for me, sitting back and seeing
that was yeah, incredible.
Speaker 1 (25:57):
Oh that's brilliant. Was that the moment you fell in
love with?
Speaker 13 (26:01):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (26:01):
That's when I that's when I decidedly this could be
a good thing.
Speaker 1 (26:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (26:06):
I remember watching that. I was back home in South
Australia watching on my laptop and where this girl can play?
I might look into that one, but I think it's good.
It's one of those examples that it just creates belief
amongst probably yourself, Stormy and everyone that's striving to get
to that next level. You see Dasha, Wow, she just
(26:28):
took down sherup over Maybe I can do it. So
I think there's one of those examples. And for me
was Nick Kurrios twenty fourteen Wimbledon as a wild card
taking down raffa time that was huge because Nick and
I were sharing a coach earlier that year, about six
months prior, and for me, his just rapid improvement was astonishing.
Speaker 1 (26:53):
Did you look at your coach and go, what are
you doing to me? Mate?
Speaker 10 (26:55):
Like?
Speaker 2 (26:55):
Why am I not taking down kings favoritism?
Speaker 5 (26:58):
But yeah, that one on center court at Wimbledon, and
just the belief Nick Hadden, I guess we can sort
of say that belief even in this dar.
Speaker 1 (27:07):
No one believes in Nick more than Nick.
Speaker 4 (27:10):
I'm going to go a little bit more recent. I'm
gonna go Stormy playing siegmund As.
Speaker 3 (27:17):
A couple of years ago.
Speaker 1 (27:18):
There you go, you have gone?
Speaker 4 (27:21):
It was no, I'm going to go, yeah, John Kyne Arena.
The roof was closed, The crowd was unreal. I remember
watching that on TV and knowing that I.
Speaker 1 (27:33):
Feel like I'm there. That was good description keep going,
That's what I mean.
Speaker 4 (27:35):
The crowd was going on real storms doing the hands
the come on, give me energy, looking at Pratty, looking
at Locke. Yeah, in that moment, I just felt like
you believed in yourself and it was kind of a
little bit of a note for the rest of the
Ossie Tennis Place to be like, you know, Storm can
do this, we can do this too. And I feel
like that was probably your best year yet. And yeah,
(27:56):
probably one of your memorable moments, but one of my
memorable memory moments from aosh, thanks j oh Good.
Speaker 5 (28:03):
Like panelis getting around each other. Yeah, yeah, need more
of it.
Speaker 4 (28:06):
Not like you to point Luke, well made, Look you're
looking fresh today.
Speaker 2 (28:12):
Do you have a memorable No, I was just trying
to think something nice say to Luke, and I ever
came to mind.
Speaker 1 (28:17):
I think for me.
Speaker 2 (28:19):
Even more recent last year US Open, Poppy taking down Novak. Yeah,
the joker himself folded like a house of cards. I mean,
it wasn't that easy, but yeah, no, it was pretty amazing.
And you saw, yeah Poppy's face at the time even
he was like did that just happen?
Speaker 1 (28:37):
It was pretty incredible.
Speaker 3 (28:38):
I can picture that.
Speaker 1 (28:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (28:40):
Well, let us know from home podcast at Tennis dot
Com that you or on social who your biggest moment
in that Ossie's taking down a goat or a god
or your own countryman.
Speaker 1 (28:50):
Is it the Philippines? Is it the USA? Is it
the UK?
Speaker 2 (28:54):
You tell us where you're from and then tell us Frev's takedown. Now,
before we were talking about tennis mums and Taylor and
her thy grand slam mums. We've got a not a
new mum, but she's got a new kid. Caroline was
Niaki welcomes her new child, little Max was Niyaki Lee.
Speaker 1 (29:09):
That's exciting. Congratulations, that's so exciting.
Speaker 3 (29:12):
Do you think she'll make another comeback?
Speaker 1 (29:14):
I think I say, make another kid, and I'm like,
let her have a break, just have one.
Speaker 3 (29:18):
Make another comeback, sweet Caroline.
Speaker 9 (29:21):
I don't think so. I think she's maybe busy with three.
Speaker 2 (29:24):
Yeah, yeah, well and last month a very own Sam
Stozer welcome little Emmy Gray Stozer to the world captain.
Speaker 3 (29:34):
That's so exciting.
Speaker 1 (29:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (29:36):
No, So everyone's congratulations to all the tennis mum's out there.
It's not Mother's Day, but Happy Today Day. It's going
to be fun. Now here's one that sort of slipped
into my rundown. I don't recall this in the production meeting.
But dog's on court. I think Victoria, one of our producers,
quite the dog fan.
Speaker 1 (29:52):
But it is cute story.
Speaker 2 (29:53):
So after winning her semi final match against Emierotico Adakallan
Sky's puppy Bella ran onto court to celebrate the win.
Was very moment And what I am seeing here is
it that pooch had its own accreditation, little photo and
a little poor print for the name as well rings
a bell your little Tofu do that one.
Speaker 5 (30:11):
Yeah, my little Tofu has had his credential here at
the Aussie Open, and I got quite a few messages
that people weren't happy because he was getting more access
than what they could ever get. So look that was
my wife Dasha. She brought him in.
Speaker 1 (30:27):
Yep.
Speaker 5 (30:28):
But I don't think he left a very good impression if.
Speaker 1 (30:31):
He left a few other things.
Speaker 5 (30:32):
But yeah, yeah, he's I think very protective.
Speaker 3 (30:37):
So no Tofu next year, no creditations.
Speaker 5 (30:40):
I don't think. I don't think Craigs.
Speaker 1 (30:43):
I think Craig.
Speaker 2 (30:43):
Yeah, there's a few extra lines in the handbook about dogs,
especially dogs named after bean based product. Yeah, yeah, but
very cute and Vic that one was for you. What
do you guys think of pets at tennis events. Yeah,
your name. I mean, I love the idea of a
dog being a ball sort of role, like you know
in theory, but I don't think it would actually work
because the dog would just be like, this is the
(31:05):
most fun.
Speaker 1 (31:06):
But do you see many animals out on the road
when you're on tour?
Speaker 6 (31:09):
You actually do, Yeah, a lot of players travel with
their dogs, and it does create a nice, like welcoming atmosphere,
Like it can be very tense on tour, and as
soon as there's dogs, everyone descravitates towards them. So it
is very true and it does like bring this kind
of nice, softer side to yeah, to players and to
(31:29):
the teams and the environment.
Speaker 2 (31:32):
So aside from Tofo obviously, because that's everyone's favorite favorite
tennis dog that you've met.
Speaker 1 (31:37):
Who's got the cutest pooch?
Speaker 6 (31:39):
Oh, that's a really tough question. I don't really want
to like play favorites. But Tomlinovich just dog Cruise. He's
not a little puppy.
Speaker 9 (31:51):
He's a big dog.
Speaker 6 (31:52):
But he is very very cute and very gentle, and
he's always at the Miami Open and yeah, so he's
really lovely and we love alas.
Speaker 2 (32:00):
Yeah, well that Yeah, they say the dogs and people
who own them have very similar temperaments.
Speaker 1 (32:07):
What does that say about Dasha and Tofu?
Speaker 5 (32:09):
They're identical, short tempered, protective, angry yep, always hungry. List
goes on, Well, before I throw to a break, Jamie,
you've got some breaking news we do.
Speaker 4 (32:24):
Chris O'Connor has just beaten City Pass over in Toronto.
Speaker 1 (32:30):
That's oh a boot that that's a huge.
Speaker 3 (32:32):
Win by him. Really not so good for City Pass.
Speaker 2 (32:37):
He'll be fine, he'll be back in Corsica having you know,
something fun to do. So that's pretty good starting.
Speaker 3 (32:42):
I'm going to say something else probing back.
Speaker 2 (32:44):
With as soon as they created their joint Instagram account,
you knew it was going downhill. Oh yeah, no, good
and well speaking since past he's just rejoined up with
his dad in the coaching team he has. Yeah, so
they saw our little Instagram post post put up before.
Speaker 3 (33:05):
How do you think that's going to go?
Speaker 5 (33:06):
When they did pretty well before? Obviously, Steph has trialed
a few different coaching setups of late and they didn't
quite work. But it's funny how we all think he's
struggling so much and he's still twenty five in the world,
so it just shows what sort of caliber player he is.
(33:27):
But I'm sort of looking more at Chris O'Connell there.
He's probably low key been struggling a little bit this
year for his level, so that's that's a huge win
for him. I feel like he wins around or two
and mostly these masters, but knocking out sits a pass
and I haven't seen his draw, but I think a
deep week here would be really timely for Chris and again,
(33:48):
just a great player, being top one hundred for probably
five six years now, and would love to see him
sort of push inside the top fifty and beyond.
Speaker 2 (33:55):
We will have a quick little break now, plenty more
to come from the tennis after this.
Speaker 1 (33:58):
See you in a second.
Speaker 2 (34:03):
All right, welcome back from our little break. Everyone's had
a breather because it is time for the musical. Who
am I now? We've done this one before. Stormy is
looking at me a little bit cautiously. I tried to
explain what was going on here, and everyone said, look,
it's gonna be fine. We're gonna get through this together
because it'll be fun. A little bit of music, I'll explain.
(34:23):
One of our producers, Harper he's got a bit of
a musical bent. He loves to get out his ukulele
or whatever instruments nearby, and he's prepared four parody songs,
each about a current or former tennis player. So you're
gonna hear and see on our screen here in studio
Harper singing a song. It will be basically a rewording
of a contemporary song that you'll know. So I'm gonna
(34:44):
give anyone who buzzes in with their name one point
if you can identify which is what's the original song
that Harper is ripping off. I'm gonna give you two
points if you can tell me who Harper is singing about,
and three points at the end as a bonus, if
you can tell me what the common thread is amongst
all four songs. Harps hit it with the first song.
Speaker 14 (35:05):
Loud, what I tell myself back Lie Christmas?
Speaker 15 (35:11):
How and if I could.
Speaker 7 (35:15):
Lad it.
Speaker 1 (35:17):
Stormy pause the tape here.
Speaker 6 (35:19):
We got Okay, the song is complicated by Avril Levine.
Speaker 1 (35:22):
Okay, that is one point for storm and keep going.
Speaker 9 (35:26):
I wasn't really listening to the lyrics.
Speaker 1 (35:29):
But breeze approach. She basically was just ignoring it completely
as well. When she was here.
Speaker 9 (35:34):
Yeah, I just want to get one thing.
Speaker 6 (35:35):
But I think with the Christmas elf it could be
Yannick Sinner incorrect.
Speaker 2 (35:39):
I'm afraid you do. I'm going to let you keep
that one point though. Should we keep playing a bit more.
Speaker 14 (35:45):
They would see I'm god s five rand with my
sing Jamie Jamie, no not cit sea Jamie.
Speaker 1 (36:01):
Slow off the maluky.
Speaker 2 (36:04):
Luke take all the time you am just breathe have
a think, just go No no, no, no no no,
Should I tell you?
Speaker 1 (36:14):
Yeah, we'll hear the rest of the first.
Speaker 14 (36:16):
With my single hand back, I win.
Speaker 1 (36:22):
Here lost cabos. I'm getting up a shadow.
Speaker 5 (36:31):
Sorry, I'll.
Speaker 8 (36:34):
Win some bouncing cas like lost coubos. Away from the.
Speaker 12 (36:41):
Sword, the musical sword, up in the ride the fun
on the side.
Speaker 14 (36:46):
Lis is my maid, rash outy play some time.
Speaker 16 (36:52):
He asked me, why do you have to go and
hit the um be genty fault?
Speaker 14 (36:58):
I lost my cool the may sweet decision that the
ball had.
Speaker 16 (37:03):
To be bolted into Alban But the ball didn't fall.
I thought that it the shot and it plowed right
into honestly.
Speaker 8 (37:14):
Or possibly the worst facial location.
Speaker 4 (37:19):
No, no, well done, all right, So that minus four points.
Speaker 1 (37:24):
Uh no, no, no, you get four points just for
being nice. Thanks. Yeah, Lou doesn't get those, so that's
two for Luke. Okay, cool, cool, well down modern onto.
The next one I.
Speaker 12 (37:35):
Made my first land main drop wibbled in twenty one,
played until the second week was the start of the
Golden Run that you couldn't guess the country in which
I was born since it across the end landing Romaine
(38:00):
as well the dads.
Speaker 9 (38:01):
From Storm Song of Summer sixty nine. Correct, is the
player Emma Radakanu?
Speaker 10 (38:07):
You are.
Speaker 1 (38:11):
So she was actually born in Canada, in Toronto. Well,
I didn't know that.
Speaker 5 (38:15):
There you go.
Speaker 1 (38:16):
This is fun and educational entertainment. You'll call it very good.
Speaker 13 (38:22):
Look back Now that's some Danda blushing meadows man qualified.
Speaker 1 (38:36):
Those were the best weeks of my life.
Speaker 3 (38:40):
That's cool.
Speaker 9 (38:41):
Well that was.
Speaker 1 (38:44):
Third one off the pop. Here we go.
Speaker 14 (38:48):
I drew a tweet up al god a response.
Speaker 4 (38:51):
From this guy wanted some Jamie Layla.
Speaker 3 (38:58):
What's her surname?
Speaker 1 (38:59):
You think lad the Fernandes and that is incorrect.
Speaker 2 (39:03):
So not only are you wrong, you also exposed that
you forgot her last name.
Speaker 1 (39:06):
I hope it was worth it.
Speaker 16 (39:07):
On with the next, I'm one of them famous.
Speaker 1 (39:17):
Said it louder though, so he gets it. Favoritism Jennie,
it is yes.
Speaker 2 (39:25):
Correct as opposed to the other. Genie good. That is
two points. I don't have the song anyway, keep going, okay,
let's listen a little bit longer, but never way.
Speaker 8 (39:39):
Rankings with ball and found, just like tis smaller.
Speaker 4 (39:48):
Sister loves right, Ja, what's you?
Speaker 2 (39:56):
I'm going to give Stormy that one. You're going to
give you a point as well, because you kind of
got her name right too.
Speaker 3 (40:01):
I have to get a point for something.
Speaker 1 (40:02):
Point there, point there, Yeah, great, this is close.
Speaker 2 (40:06):
Yeah, this is this is neck and neck. You actually
you're You're a point ahead at the moment. I believe
in you, Luke, You're great at this game. So just
like everything else.
Speaker 8 (40:17):
My mom loves royals, but I'm the princess in Queenie
d ms are open. My hand was Jeanie.
Speaker 1 (40:28):
Maybe you didn't get it by the end.
Speaker 5 (40:29):
What if you picked Jennie when you said.
Speaker 1 (40:31):
Yeah, very good? All right? Final one. This is for
all the biscuits hit it.
Speaker 8 (40:40):
Still having a crack myself so many times I've stop
keeping track. Reach number three forty one, I get myself
and my body breaks down. I tried so hard to
win a major tiele. I can't post him the wimbled
in the file Roger, but couldn't get past.
Speaker 1 (41:04):
And Luke, what do you got?
Speaker 4 (41:06):
Luke?
Speaker 1 (41:10):
Oh he's Suddy done it. Oh that's so cool.
Speaker 2 (41:15):
That was amazing. So you are now ahead by a point.
But can anyone give me the song?
Speaker 3 (41:20):
I don't know what it's called.
Speaker 9 (41:21):
I haven't just haven't met.
Speaker 1 (41:23):
Oh Stormy, just come out of nowhere.
Speaker 9 (41:26):
God, And I know.
Speaker 8 (41:28):
My best was in twenty sixteen.
Speaker 1 (41:31):
I haven't loved my kisser was screaming.
Speaker 8 (41:35):
I don't promise son, not a role, but I just
play like this Chess.
Speaker 1 (41:41):
I just haven't switched yet.
Speaker 2 (41:44):
Okay, so you're on six. You're also on six, Jamie,
you're lovely.
Speaker 3 (41:51):
You're on So I have to give my point away?
Speaker 2 (41:54):
No, no, no, you don't have to, because we do still
have one thing that you guys are competing for. Can
you tell me what is the common threat?
Speaker 1 (42:02):
Yes?
Speaker 5 (42:04):
Canadian Canadians.
Speaker 2 (42:06):
All the players and the artists are Canadian.
Speaker 1 (42:09):
Sorry, born in Canada.
Speaker 3 (42:12):
To say.
Speaker 1 (42:14):
You were, you just clutched your pearls. You went, oh here,
you're up You've done it. You defeated the Storm.
Speaker 3 (42:24):
You wore that was that's a huge win.
Speaker 1 (42:27):
What a gracious loser. Well done Storm, Thank you. All right.
Well it's that time of the week again.
Speaker 2 (42:32):
Ace of the Week something outside of the tennis world,
but tennis can sneak into it if you have to.
What's something that's made you happy this week? Your Ace
of the week. Let's start with my co host Jamie.
Speaker 3 (42:43):
Thanks. I'm going to go Oscar Piastre. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (42:47):
On the weekend he won his sixth Grand Prix for
the year, which is he's the first Australian to win
six Formula One races in a season. So there's still
many weeks to go and I think he's probably going
to break so many records the next couple of years.
So definitely he's my Ace of the week.
Speaker 1 (43:04):
Absolutely.
Speaker 2 (43:05):
He was here for the Austrain Open this year, sitting
in the fancy seats courtside.
Speaker 1 (43:09):
Do they do all right, those Formula One drivers?
Speaker 10 (43:11):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (43:12):
What about you?
Speaker 5 (43:12):
Storming?
Speaker 6 (43:13):
So my ace of the week is my dad is
retiring from twenty five years of service in the navy.
Oh wow, so he's retiring tomorrow, I solute you. Yeah,
So congrat's dad, he would hate me talking about this
on the pod, but on an amazing career and now
he gets to enjoy retirement life with my mom and
they're going to travel.
Speaker 1 (43:33):
And it's probably not going on a cruise. Maybe definitely
not stick to Aeroplanes's dad. What was his rank in
the navy?
Speaker 9 (43:41):
Ah, he was an ew cool.
Speaker 1 (43:45):
I don't know what that is, no, sons, it's agn westness.
I don't know. That sounds pretty cool, that's amazing, it's unreal.
Not very good? All right, Luke, what about you?
Speaker 5 (43:56):
I will get around my fellow panelist everyone except for you.
Speaker 14 (44:00):
You.
Speaker 5 (44:01):
That's fine, Jamie obviously with the shoulder surgery. But see
