Speaker 1 (00:04):
Welcome to the tennis Mini a rap at the end
of every round of the US Open. Coming up, it's
an Italian takeover in New York, and we're not talking
about the mafia. Elena Osta Penko serves up controversy and
the fairy tale run continues for the world number one
hundred and seventy three from Hong Kong. That's all ahead
with me, Brett Thomas, not Adrian Mannarino. If you're watching

(00:24):
this without the sound off, I'm sure some people think
that I'm him. I'm a lefty. He is too, but
he is French. I'm Australian and a favorite of ours
here at Pod Lava Arena. Darius Saville, how are you, Dasha,
I'm good.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
Thank you for having me.

Speaker 3 (00:36):
You know when you mentioned world number one seventy three
from Hong Kong, Yeah, for some reason I thought of Priscilla.
I know you're talking about.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
The Coleman Wong.

Speaker 3 (00:46):
Yeah, but then because obviously Priscilla is Australian, but she's.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
Her parents are from Hong Kong.

Speaker 3 (00:54):
Yeah, you're like, wow, is he saying she's from Hong
Kong she's playing for Australian.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
Well, yeah, maybe Hong Kong could claim Priscilla as well,
and so Colemud wouldn't be the first person from Hong
Kong to make it through to the third round of a.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
Sign very much claiming her absolutely.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
We're going to talk about her in Stocks Up, Stocks Down,
which is the segment we have New York and Wall
Street if you're picking up what I'm putting down there.
But let's start off with the matches of the round
and Dasha, what was your match of the round? In
round two?

Speaker 3 (01:26):
Watching my bestie name Daria, I'll call her Daria just
because like Daria.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
So we don't get confused again.

Speaker 3 (01:36):
Camilla Raki Marva tight match, I think from I think, yeah,
she was one for down in the third, she had
points to go five three in the third, but Dasha
was able to fight it off.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
That's what she does.

Speaker 3 (01:55):
She's really hard to bid, like she doesn't bid herself.
But I also think she can be a little bit
more aggressive at times and she can take balls out
of their air. And from also observing she loves being
a nausey and she had really good crowd support, which

(02:16):
is school when she was feeding off it.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
Well, New Yorker's love a fighter who's more. Who's more
Australian out of you too, Who's picked up more of
the Australian slang and ways of life? I mean, you've
been here for long. Who likes veggimite out of you two?

Speaker 2 (02:31):
I do?

Speaker 3 (02:31):
I do? Yeah, like I always, I love a crumpet
with BUTI might.

Speaker 1 (02:38):
Oh wow, I prefer honey on a crumpet. I think
vegiemot's just for toast. But that's okay. That's you can't
get more Australian than that. So you like the way
that she is going at the moment. She's got Naomi
Osaka next, but seems like she's full of confidence at
the moment. Daria.

Speaker 3 (02:55):
Yeah, that will be obviously a tough match. They'll get
a big court. I'm excited.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
Yeah, absolutely, And obviously we would love for you to
still be in the US, but you're back now and
you've been able to watch a lot of these matches
early because you're just getting over your jet leg.

Speaker 3 (03:10):
Yeah. So I've been up early and I'm like, wow,
this is good there. The US Open is on. So yeah,
I think I've been waking up like three am. This
morning was six thirty, so I missed a few imagined,
but it's been. It's been good for my jet leg wonderful.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
Yeah. Ye, not as bored as usual, yep, not sitting
in the dark.

Speaker 1 (03:33):
And of course being in Melbourne. Are your coffee drinker
as well?

Speaker 2 (03:37):
Yes, yeah much, But we have a coffee machine.

Speaker 1 (03:39):
So right are you doing? You don't go out for one?

Speaker 3 (03:43):
Sometimes we do because we can like and it is
it's still nice and the coffee yet the takeout coffee
is nice at the cafe.

Speaker 1 (03:52):
See, I think if I had a coffee machine, I
would still go out for coffee in Melbourne. That's where
we're recording, where Podlavor Arena is. I was up pretty
early as well this morning. I saw Jannick Sinner demolish
Alexei Poprin, but then Jensen Brooksby and Flavio Caboli the Italian.
This was a five setter. And have you ever played
an American in the US, or at least when you

(04:14):
play somebody in their home country? Yeah, the crowds on
their side. How difficult is that? Or is that something
that you love? Because it's like I'm the underdog here.

Speaker 3 (04:22):
I remember I lost to against Shelby Rogers seven sixth
and the third a few years ago, and for a
few years it was like the longest match, the longest
women's match.

Speaker 1 (04:35):
At the US Open, rain delays and things.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
Wasn't a rain delay, but for some reason, I think
it rained before our match there and literally a bucket
of water just fell down on our court and there too.
Oh no, and then I think she also went for
a toilet break.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
Yeah, right, and it took forever.

Speaker 3 (04:55):
And it's only because the locker rooms were that far
away from the court, like she it wasn't on her.
She literally like came back and she's like, I'm so sorry.
I don't know where I was, like where they took me.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
But it took forever.

Speaker 1 (05:08):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (05:09):
But yeah, it's tough playing against an American and I mean,
we get that advantage playing here at home when the
crowd's supporting us. But I feel like Australians are very polite,
like they will still some countries, like playing in Mexico,

(05:29):
they will literally go quiet if you win, Like if
you play the best, you think you just played the
best point in your life. Yeah, and you won that point,
there will be no support.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
Yeah. It must have been like that in fed Cup
as well. When you're playing in some of these countries,
like South.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
America is South America?

Speaker 1 (05:47):
Yeah yeah, Spain plays in Romania. Yeah wow, that gets
pretty crazy.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
I bet Slovakia. Yeah that check.

Speaker 1 (05:54):
Well, this match was incredible. Was out on court seventeen,
so perhaps not a court that everyone was watching, but
I was. Coboli made the quarters at Wimbledon. He's only
twenty three, Brooksby's twenty four. Kboli had two match points
serving at five to four in the fifth and was
then broken. What's your mindset like when you're serving for
the match, you have match points, and then you lose

(06:16):
those points and you're broken.

Speaker 3 (06:20):
You are very disappointed, But the best players can just
forget about it and keep going. And I think it
really depends how you lost those points as well. If
you know, Brooksby played brave and it was just too
good and you can accept that, then you're still a

(06:41):
good chance of putting on a good fight.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
But if you're.

Speaker 3 (06:47):
You know, get too negative and too down on yourself
and keep thinking about those match points, you're probably you
might as well just pack your bags. Yeah, and you're
not winning from there.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
Well, he was incredible. Cupoli came back. The crowd was
on top of him, but powered home in the ten
point tiebreak. So that was a cracking match this morning.
And I think early on in the Grand Slams, some
of the outside courts, the players are a little bit
more evenly matched in terms of their ranking, so we
can get these matches that go the distance as well.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
Yeah, they're outside squards are always the ones to watch.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
I feel like, yeah, sometimes there are funny smells on
the outside courts. We're going to talk about that a
little bit later. We have a new segment that I
know you're looking forward to. But before then, let's get
to stocks up and stocks down. We mentioned this being
Wall Street, the rises and the fallers in New York.
I know you're a positive person, so let's start with
stocks up. Whose stocks are going up at the US

(07:42):
Open after two rounds?

Speaker 3 (07:43):
Dasher, Well, obviously Priscilla, Priscilla Han first appearance in the
third round of a slam, one of my good friends.
So very happy and yeah, I never like playing my
friends anyways, Yep, I was like, well, it's a win win.

Speaker 1 (07:59):
Yeah, but tell us more about Priscilla eighteen aces thirty
six winners. Is her serve normally such a weapon for her?

Speaker 3 (08:08):
It is she has a big game. I really like
her backhand. It's one of her best shots, and she's
been coming in and closing at the net and that's
one of her strength and her differences. She's been playing
really aggressive, and I watched some of her matches in qualifying.

(08:32):
She's looking good and she's she's really happy, and I
think she plays. She loves New York as well, like
some players like, for example me, I'm like, oh, I'm
not sure, it's like too hectic, but she loves it.
She stays with friends and she just enjoys her time there,
and she's got that supporter. I was actually getting really

(08:56):
distracted by him when that because we were playing at
the same time, side by side, and I was like,
who is this guy? And I saw her interview and
his name's Eric, and he just supported her last year
and she qualified and I think she lost first round,
but then this year she's still going. And she said

(09:18):
in the interview like, I need this guy. I can't
play without him. And if you heard like some of
the stuff that he says, like it's so funny.

Speaker 1 (09:28):
Yeah, yeah, Well, I mean maybe she can't afford to
take a coach with her, so just take Eric he's
paying a coach.

Speaker 3 (09:34):
But one of the one of the ones that I
was when I was playing, I was like, oh my god,
just stop it.

Speaker 2 (09:40):
He'll go.

Speaker 3 (09:42):
It's Priscilla's home party and I'm invited. Some of the
sayings he came up with was was pretty hilarious.

Speaker 1 (09:51):
Well, Eric is now and adopted Assie, so he used
to travel.

Speaker 2 (09:54):
Wherever exactly she needs him.

Speaker 1 (09:57):
Especially if she keeps going further. Stop what's up for me?
Italy the country, great food obviously, but Yannick Sinner, Lorenzo
Mazzetti Cabali, we mentioned him winning a cracking five setter,
and that Italian photographer that captured that unbelievable image with
Paolini and the Onyx racket.

Speaker 3 (10:17):
I hope he was the like there is a competition
or something, Yeah, like best photography, photo of the year,
photo of the year.

Speaker 1 (10:27):
Yeah, give him some sort of award. And Coleman Wong
as well. We mentioned the player from Hong Kong. It's
great when these countries that you know, we don't associate
so much with tennis produce someone who unfortunately got pastor
Adam Walton as well, but yeah, it's great to see
that Hong Kong now has a pro tennis player making waves.

Speaker 2 (10:47):
And I think.

Speaker 3 (10:49):
I've played a few tournaments there and the federation they're
like really trying to they're supporting their players, and it's
it's good to see that it's bang off. I don't
know if he's getting supported. He could but like training
in the US or something. But I really like the

(11:10):
tournaments there, so I'm glad that it's all. It's they
have a good story.

Speaker 1 (11:14):
Now nice, We'll expect to call for from Hong Kong
to get you back there. A Coco GoF want to
ask you about her beat Donna Vekich change of coach
from Matt Day to Gavin McMillan to eliminate double faults
from her game.

Speaker 2 (11:30):
He's a biomechanical coach.

Speaker 1 (11:32):
Yeah, have you ever tried to tinker with your technique
either during a tournament or just before as Coco has done.

Speaker 3 (11:38):
I I'm someone that could do it, like but it's
very small adjustments and if you watch her, it's not
like there's much that change, a dramatic change or like
that she's instead of step up, she's doing the platform surf,
so it's very it's very adjustments. So if yeah, I've

(12:04):
done it.

Speaker 1 (12:05):
Yeah. Yeah, well it's working for her across two rounds,
and I guess if she's not at her best at
the start of the tournament but then gets rolling, then
she'll get enormous confidence.

Speaker 3 (12:13):
Yeah, that's kind of what she said in her post
match interview after the first round. She said, it was
like it wasn't the best, but I will keep keep
training and hopefully it will only get better with matches.

Speaker 1 (12:27):
And Venus Williams her first win in the doubles since
twenty fourteen with Leila Fernandez as well. So crowd favorite
still they're Venus Williams will used to be playing at
forty five? Do you think do I hope to still
be playing it for.

Speaker 2 (12:39):
I hope not. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (12:43):
Alan Perez another so yeah, I wasn't too happy about that.

Speaker 1 (12:49):
One of my friends, well, stocks down for your friend,
and yeah, it's unfortunate to put this next player in
stocks down because she's a favorite on tennis, plus Alexandra
Iyala the crowd on her side, but unfortunately went down
in the second round.

Speaker 3 (13:03):
It was incredible what she was able to do pull
off in the first round, coming coming back from five
to one down. So I was a little bit yeah,
I was actually a little bit like sad. I wanted
her to have a good run. But books are she
she's she's a good player. I think she's always a

(13:24):
little bit under a radar, but she's hard to beat.
She has like she has a different game, and she
kind of looks like I don't want to get canceled,
but she kind of sometimes looks like a dead possum.

Speaker 1 (13:41):
Oh okay, but I think you're fine, but she's she's fighting.

Speaker 3 (13:46):
It's just like she has a poker face. That's probably
a better way of saying it.

Speaker 1 (13:50):
I see great poker face, great.

Speaker 2 (13:52):
Poker face, Like you can edit this bit.

Speaker 1 (13:54):
O fun, keep it rolling. Yeah, yeah, Well someone who
doesn't have a great poker faces Elena Ostapenko. We have
to put her in stocks down Taylor Town's end. Maybe
banter or some you know, byplay during a match is okay,
But afterwards this got a little bit ugly between those two.
What did you make of that?

Speaker 3 (14:15):
Ah, I wasn't I wasn't too thrilled, like and you
probably wouldn't want to do it in us. I would
hope to be smarter than that. And knowing Taylor like
she's such a sweet girl. Yeah, I don't know where
Ostabenka was going up with it, like it's she didn't

(14:38):
do herself any favors.

Speaker 1 (14:40):
And has formed Ostapenko as well. This is not a
shy person. Now a lot of players are now being
asked about this. Egos Fiontech there was a question put
to her about whether there's a double standing in women's sport,
comparing the way players are judged in tennis compared to
other sport, and she said, well, I'm twenty four a

(15:01):
tennis player. I haven't played basketball or soccer, so I
don't know about that. But in terms of random questions
in press conference, can you think of the most random
question you've ever been asked?

Speaker 3 (15:12):
I mean sometimes I always to get a random question
and I never do. I'm like, oh my god, really,
you just want to talk about my match, Like it's
pretty boring.

Speaker 1 (15:23):
So what sort of questions would you like throwing at you?
Maybe your favorite movie or some.

Speaker 3 (15:28):
Well, yeah, like it is a very random question if us,
can you read it out?

Speaker 1 (15:35):
Yeah? Sure, before we read it out, how about before
we tell you what the question is, let's just judge
how egos Fiontek felt about this question purely from her
body language.

Speaker 2 (15:48):
Yeah, what's.

Speaker 1 (15:59):
So funny to speak Polish. The question was about whether
she would put beads in her hair for a next
match like Naomi Osaka.

Speaker 2 (16:06):
She does didn't have bids in her hair?

Speaker 1 (16:08):
No, no, like.

Speaker 3 (16:11):
It is a weird question, but yeah, I would sit
with it there for a while and probably have the
same reaction, to be honest.

Speaker 1 (16:18):
Well, so you don't feel left out, I'm going to
ask you some just some random questions. Are you team
Conrad or team Jeremiah?

Speaker 2 (16:25):
Tim Conrad? Thank you for asking.

Speaker 1 (16:27):
No worries, and I'm glad you know what that is?

Speaker 2 (16:29):
It really important, very important.

Speaker 1 (16:31):
Oh wonderful. I'll just be team Jeremiah even I've never
seen that show before. Coriander all for our American viewers, Cilantro.
How do you feel about Coriander?

Speaker 2 (16:40):
I love it? I love it? I actually yeah.

Speaker 3 (16:43):
I was having like a take a bowl in the
US and I was like, oh, is it Coriander?

Speaker 2 (16:52):
Can I have something?

Speaker 3 (16:53):
She's like, no, it's Cilantra, And I'm like, oh yeah, yeah,
I can I please have Cilantro because they obviously call
it Cilantra, But I love it.

Speaker 1 (17:00):
Okay, what about talking hands free with headphones in Are
you a fan of that or is that? Is that
something that's true to do? Like if someone's just walking
around the streets talking loudly on their phone, which I
think would happen in New York.

Speaker 3 (17:15):
I mean, they don't even talk to anyone on the phone.
They just they just walk around and yell at themselves.

Speaker 1 (17:22):
Pineapple on a pizza.

Speaker 2 (17:24):
It's okay.

Speaker 1 (17:24):
These are like bad dating questions, aren't they. It's okay, okay,
stocks down funny smells at Flushing Meadows. Casparrew complain that
there's a funny smoke let's say that is legal to
use in New York, but he doesn't like it, like
it that. Novak has said the same thing. Has this
ever been something that you have noticed at Flushing Meadows Pot?

Speaker 3 (17:48):
Yeah, I've noticed it. Yeah, I don't enjoy it. No, No,
I mean do you?

Speaker 1 (17:55):
I mean I haven't played at the US Open or
any other Open, so look, it's hard to say. I mean,
I guess would the crowd like crowd noise not be
more annoying than smelling funny smoke?

Speaker 2 (18:08):
Or is it just anything that smells like are really
just disgusting?

Speaker 1 (18:12):
Yeah, And it's sort of one of those things.

Speaker 2 (18:14):
Once you know you can't fix it.

Speaker 1 (18:16):
There's nothing you can do. Yeah, because it's legal to use,
all right.

Speaker 3 (18:20):
I think with the crowd that this you can like
try and talk to the umpire and then it'll on
the get worse.

Speaker 1 (18:26):
But yeah, well maybe you could the umpire could just
say snacks are our two dollars and then they all
leave to get snacks because yeah, get yeah, that's good.
Let's play our word volley game. Now we've just come
up with this, which is moving on, moving along with
our bizarre questions. This is back and forth until one
of us can't come up with an answer. Okay, you

(18:50):
can have first serve.

Speaker 3 (18:51):
I'm not very good. So why do I get any notes?
I don't even get any notes.

Speaker 1 (18:56):
This is all off the cusps.

Speaker 2 (18:58):
This is hard.

Speaker 1 (19:00):
The topic is smells that are worse than okay, university cigarettes,
we'll call it that. So you get first serve smells
that are worse than pots.

Speaker 2 (19:11):
So I just have to come up with it.

Speaker 1 (19:12):
I just come up with the word. There's no time
or anything. Sure, tuna, I like canned tuna. So oh
so that's not a bad smell.

Speaker 2 (19:21):
Not a bad smell.

Speaker 1 (19:22):
Okay, do I need another one? Yeah, it's like tuna accepted. Okay,
great in the office. I think tuna is quite a controversial.

Speaker 3 (19:32):
Well fish Like I feel like salmon is even worse
when it's cooked and then you like hit it up
like you wouldn't hit up canned tuna, and no one
really brings like.

Speaker 2 (19:44):
Like a piece of tuna.

Speaker 1 (19:46):
So yeah, a whole piece of tuna. I was thinking
the canned Okay, your word, what smells worse than in toilets? Sure? Sorry, okay,
I'm going to give you the win for that one.
That was very That was a word Volley. Not sure
it will come back, but I think we had a
bit of fun. All right, let's change ends here Dasher,
and we'll come back with a preview of next round.

Speaker 3 (20:12):
Welcome back to the Tennis Wini with your host Darius Saville.

Speaker 1 (20:18):
Wow, that was really good. Change of ends and change
of roles, Dasha, Yep.

Speaker 2 (20:23):
Yeah I didn't. I was a bit nervous about it.

Speaker 1 (20:26):
No, you're very good.

Speaker 2 (20:27):
So you think I can have like host of podcast now?

Speaker 1 (20:30):
I think so. I think you get a lot of
thumbs up for that. To host this podcast. People know
who you are, they don't know who I am. What
is the segment here though, what are we talking about?

Speaker 2 (20:39):
Well, I don't have the notes, all.

Speaker 1 (20:41):
Right, Well, it's the match of the third round that
we're most looking forward to. Oh yeah, Dasher, what are
you most looking forward to seeing in the third round?

Speaker 3 (20:48):
Well, my best said Kin against Nayamasaka. That will be
I think. Is it a night match? Has the schedule
come out, come out tomorrow?

Speaker 1 (20:57):
Let's say? Yeah? Yeah, like her in that match, she
thinks she's a chance of knocking out Osaka.

Speaker 2 (21:03):
Well you've got the stance. What's there had to head?

Speaker 1 (21:06):
They've played twice, Ossaka's won both Clay last year in Italy,
then Indian roles in twenty eighteen, so there's lots.

Speaker 2 (21:13):
Yeah, so Claire last year, Sosarca better.

Speaker 1 (21:16):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (21:16):
I think it's a little bit about how much believe
Casatkina has. I hope she does, but it's going to
be a tough ask. Yeah, I think now is playing
really really well?

Speaker 1 (21:29):
Yep, absolutely the one. I'm looking forward to seeing two
lefties because I'm a lefty, even though not a very
good one. But Ben Shelton and Adrian Mannarino my doppel ganger.
Ben Shelton, Do you like watching him play. He loves
getting in the crowd, involved in getting himself pumped up,
especially in New York.

Speaker 2 (21:46):
I actually do. It's a lot of fun.

Speaker 3 (21:48):
I like players that fit off the crowd, and he's
fun to watch.

Speaker 1 (21:52):
Yeah, made the third round last year SEMIS in twenty
twenty three. They've actually played three times, including the third
round at the AO in twenty twenty four, and Adrian Manorino,
the wiley veteran, got that win. And he is seems
like a really difficult guy to play against because I
think his racket tension is I.

Speaker 2 (22:12):
Can't get my head around his rackettention.

Speaker 1 (22:15):
Yeah, so can you explain?

Speaker 2 (22:16):
I can't.

Speaker 1 (22:18):
So it's really kind of it's a lot very loose. Yeah, okay,
And is that just I don't know.

Speaker 3 (22:23):
I feel like you have to like string it by hand,
like I don't. I don't know how the stringers do it.

Speaker 1 (22:31):
And the idea is to what's sort of like bounces differently.
It's really hard to read or it's.

Speaker 3 (22:38):
Just it's for him, like it's purely how he feels
and he just redirects the ball.

Speaker 2 (22:43):
Yeah without Yeah, it's he just like he just redirects
the ball.

Speaker 3 (22:49):
He doesn't. I feel like he doesn't like accelerate that much.
He's very good in defense and yeah, like he's so crafty.

Speaker 1 (23:00):
Yeah, very crafty. We'll see how Ben Shelton does against
the Frenchman. You think that might be on Arthur Rash,
