On this bonus episode of The Walk Of Life podcast, Cheryl Thibault is joined by Sue Pimentel-Lafferty, a Nail Tech who contributed to the book Career In The Beauty Industry; See If It’s For You. On this episode they talk about Sue’s chapter in the book, her career in the nail industry where she has earned the letters M-ANT, MNT and CCPMA after her name.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
I got my licence back in the 80s and started in the nail industry because of K-Mart, which sounds crazy, but I was working in the cosmetics department where my area was nail polish and accessories. I looked into nail school, graduated after 100 hours and thought I was a professional…. I was not! It was a great learning experience though, from my instructors and other people in the industry who taught me what not to do and helped me to get to where I am today.
Because of social media and YouTube they think that that’s what it’s all about, I have to intercede and let them know that there are some YouTubers who are professional and succeeding, but a lot of it is misleading. Also the terms they use: It’s not ‘glue’ it’s resin, you don’t ‘put your fingers in the cooker’ it’s in the LED lamp, you have to use the right terminology if you’re going to be a professional. Social media and YouTube can be good, but you’ve got to know who you’re watching, which ones are educated and which aren’t.
The course here in Massachusetts, and in Connecticut as well, is still 100. But we’re meeting with the State Board and hopefully they’ll listen to us and bring it up to 250, because it’s not enough time to learn everything.
M-ANT is Advanced Nail Technician, we provide a 15 module online course that you can do at your own time. MNT is Medical Nail Technician, to get this you learn more of what podiatrists do and their terminology and tools, after you take a bridge exam, it will enable you to become a CCPMA – Certified Clinical Podiatrist Medical Assistant – which enables you to work in a podiatrist’s office.
BEST MOMENTS
‘My first set of nails was on a friend of mine, she kept complaining that it was burning. It wasn’t until the next day I realised I was using primer as a monomer! I never did that again.’
‘What I love most about teaching is preparing the students for a great career and letting them know how much more it is than just sitting behind the desk and doing nails.’
‘Travelling to visit trade shows brings a lot of laughter and a lot of fun.’
‘There’s always something new coming over the horizon. You have to keep updated, you have to keep going to classes to educate yourself.’
