This Short Suck traces the 1838 panic through hoaxes, aristocratic “bets,” and mass hysteria to ask what Jack revealed about a rapidly modernizing empire’s fears. Along the way, we connect the legend’s cultural footprint to later monsters—think Dracula—and even to cape-and-cowl vigilantes.
