Speaker 1 (00:03):
Now it's Texans All Access.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
What a night, what a day, what a weekend? At
Super Bowl weekend, but NFL honors the Texans cleaned up.
Mark Vandermaer and John Harris with you. What a Texans night.
Offensive Rookie of the Year, Defensive Rookie of the Year,
and of course Andre Johnson is headed to Canton. And
as I say the words, it's so good. We have
(00:27):
another podcast up specifically on that. But Johnny, it was
a clean up night. Sean Pendergast said, greatest night in
franchise history. I have to put a bunch of borders
on that, because it's offseason, it's awards, it's a certain
kind of night. But what a night it was when
you think about it. I put this out on Twitter,
your reaction Andre Ware's reaction to Will Anderson getting acquired
(00:48):
by the Houston Texans on Draft Night, then moving up
and getting him and CJ. Stroud before that, the reactions
we had. We were so happy Draft night, everybody was.
And then nine and a half months later, not even
that they win Offensive Rookie of the Year, Defensive Rookie
of the Year. That's incredible, incredible stuff.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
You know, this is kind of this is weird, but
I'm like Google or on Chrome, That's what I use
as my my interwebs that's my browser. So to get
my shortcut to Google docs, when I just go into
the bar, I type docs and then I hit return
(01:26):
every time I type that. In the twenty twenty three
NFL draft, Harris one hundred, the very first one I did,
pops up every single time, and number one at that
point was Will Anderson Junior. And every single time I
see that pop up, and I smile, and I just
look at what I wrote about him and how it came.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
It so came true. I mean all of it.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
I mean just what I wrote, and that's my emotion
coming through when it's oh my god, we're gonna end
up with both of them. And I told Drew already this.
During all of last year's draft season, I felt like
it was a four person draft, like a four player
elite draft. It was Bryson CJ and it was Jalen
(02:15):
Carter and Will Anderson Wow, and I all along.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
I felt the way it felt like it was four
league guys.
Speaker 3 (02:20):
And I was like, we got picks two and twelve,
what will it take to get two of them?
Speaker 1 (02:25):
What would we have to do.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
To get two of the elite players obviously Bryson, Jalen,
CJ and Jalen or you know Bryson.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
Will CJ, will or Carter if he fell after what
happened on Combine week.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
Right, But I didn't know whether you can rely on that,
And then when that happened. Was when that happened, I
was kind of like, I don't know, man, that was
kind of my backup plan, Like, okay, well maybe Carter
fallster you at twelve, But I I for weeks was like,
how do we end up with two of these guys?
Speaker 2 (02:56):
What do we have to do? You didn't think there
was any way was gonna happen though, right. I didn't
think there was any way we're gonna move up to
get Will Anderson after taking whoever we took.
Speaker 3 (03:05):
As I was playing around with all these mock simulators,
and I mean, and that isn't always the best example,
but just trying to play with the like, here's what
the original draft chart of Jimmy Johnson said, this is
what you would have to give up, and it's pretty
close to what they what they had to give up.
But I thought that's still that's still tough. And that
(03:26):
got to the point where I was like, man, it's
a lot to give up, But if I got both
of them, I'd be good with that. That was the
conclusion I had come to.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
And you accelerate the development of the franchise, right, and
guess what happened right now?
Speaker 1 (03:39):
You do it.
Speaker 3 (03:39):
You don't wait for twenty twenty four and twenty twenty five,
and you keep playing with these draft assets.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
I mean, you get better now, right.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
They felt like will Anderson was worth it, right, and
he's definitely worth it. And you know what everyone talks about, well,
first round here, second round there. Listen, you might get
good players with those picks, but you really felt like
this was a great player. Had to get right now
and get good in a hurry. Well they got good
in a hurry, right, and will Anderson's defensive Rookie of
the year. It all worked out really well so far.
(04:10):
Now let's see where it takes us from here. Because
we warned everybody be patient with will Anderson Junior. It's
his rookie year. We talked about Watt's rookie year. We
talked about Mario Williams rookie year, Cloudy's rookie year. It
doesn't always happen overnight for a defensive player. But he's
Rookie of the Year. And Demiko Ryans won that, Brian
Cushing won that, and now Will Anderson junior for the franchise.
(04:30):
Watt didn't win it. He didn't have a phenomenal rookie
year until we got late in the season into the postseason.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
Yeah, I just like I said, when I look at
my actually, when I look at both my Scottery reports
for Will and CJ, I mean, I hit it out
of the park. And I mean, I'll be honest, I
try and find the more positive aspect of guys, the
best that possibly came side.
Speaker 1 (04:48):
I try and really kind of focus on that.
Speaker 3 (04:50):
But I looked at those two guys, and you know,
there were a lot of people kind of poking holes
and Will and for some reason, and I just didn't.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
I didn't get it.
Speaker 3 (04:57):
I'm like, there's so much with that you get with
him and his Trayvon Walker.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
Hurt a little bit with people's opinions of Will. Did
Trayvon Walker a little bit? A tiny bit in that? Yeah,
he might be solid, but is he going to be
a top three worth it guy? And I'm just sort
of semi quoting air quoting and some pundits out there
who thought maybe you gave up too much? And I
love being validated. I love seeing this because who could
(05:26):
walk taller than Nick Casario right now? And the McNair's
after everything that's happened, hiring Demico and Demiko should have
been Coach of the Year. Oh my take on this?
Speaker 1 (05:38):
Yeah, I want to hear that.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
Okay, Stefanski, all right, I don't want to take anything
away from Stefanski, but as we all know, Steve, Steven Stefanski.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
Who are those guys? By the way, Oh that was
that was the fan of the year. Who knew who
it was? And that was Justin Hartley who had been
on the show This is Us. He used to be
married to Traschelle.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
I kind of walked into the middle of that and
I was like, who are these guys? Why? Screw?
Speaker 3 (06:01):
He was married to Krishelle Gousse who was on the
show called Selling Sunset that's on YouTube.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
But This is Us? He was a very popular.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
Yeah, This is Us. Justin Harley was in that show
This Game.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
I didn't really watch it, but I know it was popular.
Speaker 1 (06:14):
He called him Steven Stefans.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
I mean, that's unbelievable. But and it's too bad for Stefanski,
who wasn't there. Listen, maybe there's a good excuse, and
maybe it's been out and I haven't seen it. If
there's not a good reason, there's no good reason. Your
guy won Defensive Player of the Year and you won
Coach of the year. Show up. Now, maybe there's some
(06:37):
family issue whatever, So I want to give him the
benefit of a doubt here. All right, here we go.
But as I said, whenever you preface something with I
don't want to take anything away from.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
You're about to.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
But you're about to. So I'm about to take something
away from Stefanski, and it's this. He previously won Coach
of the Year. Twenty twenty season, they go to the playoffs,
win a playoff game for the first time ever in
the New Brown's history since they came back into the
league in ninety nine, So good for him. The next
two years, he wins eight and nine games respectively. Nick
Chubb is healthy. Nick Chubb runs for almost thirteen hundred
(07:09):
yards and twenty one In twenty two he runs for
over fifteen hundred yards. He's a total horse. A total study.
But what's everybody's saying about this season? He won with
four different quarterbacks. Well, last year he had Watson for
six games in Jacoby Brisset and you won seven games.
Speaker 1 (07:25):
What was the problem then?
Speaker 2 (07:27):
And he had Nick Chubb running for fifteen hundred So
you should win comeback coach of the year, you should win.
Good job bouncing back. Really, this is silly. Demiko Ryans
took a three win team, got a bunch of guys together,
free agents who were just signed, and rookies and a
rookie quarterback, rookie receiver who blew up, rookie defensive lineman
(07:50):
who won Player of the Year, Rookie of the year.
And he's not the coach of the year. I know
it was a tie and Stefanski won a tie breaker.
It should have been Demiko, hands down.
Speaker 3 (07:59):
Well, as you were talking, literally as you were talking,
and we've just had the.
Speaker 1 (08:02):
TV on in here, and lots of times we do that.
We have the soundown is TV on.
Speaker 3 (08:05):
Yeah, and now at the bottom, you know how whether
it's first take or get up or whatever in ESPN
will have all their topics. As you were talking, it said,
should the Miko Ryans have been Coach.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
Of the year. Yes, yes, he should have. Now again
he cannot count the playoff game. We get it, you
can't count the playoff game. Cannot count the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (08:24):
Should have been the tie breaker.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
Well exactly, exactly, this is so close that let the
playoff game be the tiebreaker and Flacco one. Oh yeah,
and his guy Flacco one comeback player of the year
and deservedly.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
So yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
I had a nice run with the Browns and they
made the playoffs and didn't do any damage in the
playoffs because we damaged them badly. But that's my take
on Stefanski. What happened last year, what happened the year before.
So now he's coach of the year really because he
wins three four more games with four different quarterbacks. O'Brien
won a division with four different quarterbacks in twenty fifteen.
Nobody even sniffed Coach of the year. And I'm not
(09:00):
saying he should have gotten it for that, but that
was a nice performance by him.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
I mean, really, the the.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
You know, the assets, liabilities, the good, bad, whatever. The
only real thing you could say about Stefanski was, well,
he won a lot of games with four quarterbacks.
Speaker 1 (09:16):
Okay, all right, but they were plus three. They went
for seven wins to ten wins.
Speaker 3 (09:22):
Kimiko Rice took a team that had won three wins,
had won three wins and had won eleven and combined
in three years, turned around, won ten, won the division
with this team and of course beat the guy that
won the Coach of the Year by thirty one.
Speaker 2 (09:39):
Play it again.
Speaker 1 (09:40):
It's because Lamar's by coach of the year. He was
a lot of people's coach of the year.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
He won PF double a Coach of the Year, and
it was pretty clear the job that Tamiko has done
now all of them. Nick Dimko CJ will what have
you done for me lately?
Speaker 1 (09:58):
Great?
Speaker 3 (10:00):
I remember Gary Barnett was coaching Northwestern, and I'll never forget.
He was at coaching clink one time and he talked
about how he approached they come out and he was
at Northwestern. They come out of nowhere and they won.
They won the Big.
Speaker 1 (10:12):
Ten in nineteen ninety five and they went to the
Rose Bowl. He said, how was I going to get that?
Speaker 3 (10:18):
This was such a magical run in a magical season?
Speaker 1 (10:22):
He said.
Speaker 3 (10:23):
The very first team meeting going into the spring, he
walked up every guy. Call up every guy, Darnell Autree,
he called them all up and he would read off
their honors, everything they won, Heisman, finally those big ten
offensive player. They read them all and he put him
on a placard and they brought the guy up there
and the guy had it and you show you all right,
show everybody, And he showed everybody, and he goes, okay,
walk over there and put it in a trash. And
(10:45):
then they took that and they lit it on fired.
He's like, that's nineteen ninety five. Now it's nineteen ninety six.
What are you going to do? And I thought it
was genius. As he was telling us to start, I
was like, Okay, I'm gonna remember that, and I remember
that ever since. Tomko's gonna to do something like that. Hey,
twenty twenty three is magical. Yeah, but we didn't reach
our ultimate goals. No, So now all these great honors
flush them, just like a bad game, right, even with
(11:07):
a good game, you flush them. And now you get
ready for twenty twenty four. The good thing is in
that room there will be different There will be free agents,
there will be rookies, there will be you know, there
will be other players, but and it's got to be
for all of us too. It's a magical season. It's
great season. We had as much fun calling the games
as I as. I mean, I have more fun in
(11:29):
the season than I even had Rods coaching. We gotta
flush it, yeah, because we get the twenty twenty four there,
they're gonna stop and let us go, Hey remember twenty
twee no, no, no, They're gonna ask, hey, why didn't you
beat the Bills today?
Speaker 1 (11:42):
Why didn't you beat the Chiefs today?
Speaker 2 (11:43):
Oh? The expectations of Scott's kind of change. And you
play all the contenders. You play all the AFC contenders.
You play the Ravens, you play the Chiefs, you play
the Bills, you play the Jaguars, you play whoever else
you want to mention the Miami Dolphins. You play them all.
You're gonna play them all, and you're gonna be dealing
with a big challenge because they all want to deal
with you. Yes, So it's gonna be great. Though, it'll
(12:05):
be fun. We're here for the journey. It'll be hard
to get back to that divisional round opportunity. That op
that Demiko talked about, that is you know what the
only thing they can do is control what they control.
He's gonna talk about this too, Johnny when they begin
off season conditioning. Just have a great day, have a
great weight room day, have a great training day. Then OTAs, Hey,
(12:25):
let's have a good OTA day. That's all he's gonna
look for, because that's all you can control. That's all
you can do.
Speaker 1 (12:30):
Team gets better.
Speaker 2 (12:31):
Yeah, you can't just like fast forward time and get
back into the Divisional round of the twenty twenty four postseason.
Can't do it. So let's just see what happens the
joys in the journey now. Our reaction to Andre Johnson
is all on the pod as well on another pod
obviously phenomenal, So you want to listen to that. It's
wherever you got this one hit subscribe, have a great day,
(12:54):
Go Texas. Page
