S1 (00:00):
Hello, my name is Victoria at 11 am on May 19, 2021.
It's national simultaneous story time where the same book is
read at the same time all across Australia. This year's
book is called Give Me Some Space and it was
written by Philip Bunting. Let's read along together. When you
(00:25):
hear this sound. Moving. It's time to turn the page.
Are you ready to read? Let's begin.
S2 (00:40):
Moving.
S1 (00:44):
Ever since the stars aligned to bring her here, Yuna
has loved space. Her first step was one giant leap.
Her first word was graffiti. And with each birthday, Eunice
(01:04):
Cakes became a sending Lee astronomical.
S2 (01:10):
Moving.
S1 (01:13):
Now, after a few more laps around the Sun, you
now live in a world of cosmic curiosity and intergalactic inspiration.
Here's what we can see in her room. A poster
of the Moon, an actual meteorite diagrams of Orion and
(01:35):
a black hole. An advertisement to eat astronaut ice cream. Delicious.
A pet goldfish called Neil. And she's writing in her
observation notebook.
S2 (01:54):
Moving.
S1 (01:58):
You know, dreams of a life in space. Life on
Earth is just so, so, so. Math. The Earth doesn't
have fancy rings like Saturn. The Earth doesn't have a
go getter name like Mars. The Earth is named after
(02:19):
ground dirt, soil mud. The Earth can't zip through space
like a comet. One day, you know, will become an astronaut.
She will leave the Earth behind. But for now, she
(02:39):
is an astronaut in waiting. You must be this tool
to be an astronaut. You know, very much like the
astronaut bit. She is not so keen on the in
waiting part, it will take eons to grow this tool.
S2 (03:03):
Moving.
S1 (03:06):
But here's the good bit. Yuna has been industriously working
on an interplanetary plan. Figure 46 Party balloon concept, figure 23.
Escaping Earth's pesky gravitational field. Figure three. I bet astronaut
ice cream taste even better in space. With accompanying attire,
(03:34):
of course. Fishbowl helmet. Sorry, Neal. Hand-me-down snowsuit from big
cousin Carl. Carl ski gloves slightly too big, but they'll
do the trick. Mum's dusty old white Uggs circa 1995.
Still cool. And today is the big day.
S2 (04:01):
Moving.
S1 (04:05):
Today, Yuna will finally swap her humdrum ho-hum life on
Earth for an extraordinary extraterrestrial life in space. Once she
has packed a picnic and said so long to Neil.
DIY oxygen tanks from recycling bin lots of tape to
(04:26):
hold things together, some pipes from the shed. Her mission
to find life in space.
S2 (04:37):
Moving.
S1 (04:41):
But she will have to get there first. Attempt one.
Soda and mints failed elevation 32 centimeters. OK. I might
have jumped a little bit. Attempt to giant party balloon
(05:03):
filled with hydrogen. Nope. Elevation fifty six centimeters. Attempt rate rocket.
S3 (05:21):
Five, four, three, two one. Morning.
S2 (05:50):
Moving.
S1 (05:54):
SpaceX was even more extraordinary than you had hoped. There
was no so, so no humdrum and certainly no ho
hum out there. Mercury, a year on Mercury goes quickly,
one mercury year lasts just 88 Earth days. No life here, though. Venus.
(06:21):
Venus is the hottest planet in the Solar System with
an average temperature of 465 degrees Celsius. That's way too
toasty for life. Saturn, no life here, but one of
its many moons, Titan, has its own atmosphere. Maybe one day. Uranus,
(06:47):
this Punggye planet is shrouded by clouds of hydrogen sulfide H2S.
That's the stuff that makes rotten eggs stink pee you
too stinky for life to exist here. Jupiter This whopper
is 11 times wider than the Earth and has at
(07:08):
least 79 moons. But Jupiter is all gas. No life
on Mars, no life on the Red Planet yet. But
it is home to Olympus Mons, the tallest mountain in
the Solar System, whose peak is over 26 kilometers above
(07:30):
its base.
S2 (07:33):
Moving.
S1 (07:37):
Eunice Mind expanded like the universe with each new moment
almost at the edge of the Solar System, no life
so far, few Uranus was really smelly. Am I alone
out here? Did I remember to feed Neil? Maybe there
(07:58):
is no life in space. Space and time seemed to
stand still as she traveled further towards the edge of
the Solar System, Neptune, the most distant planet in our
solar system, is pretty chilly at an average of minus
(08:19):
214 degrees Celsius. No life here, either.
S2 (08:29):
Moving.
S1 (08:32):
With all this astronaut thing, you know, had worked up
quite an appetite, so she found a lovely spot on
a ring of frozen rocks and launched into her tea
sandwiches and astronaut ice cream. Kiper Belt, a giant doughnut
shaped ring of frozen rocks and ice. Pluto is in
(08:56):
here somewhere. C3 H. Six 02. I've read that the
center of the Milky Way tastes like raspberries, thanks to
the compound ethyl format. Yum!
S2 (09:13):
Moving.
S1 (09:16):
In the distance, something caught Unies I. Shining in the
light of a nearby star, a tiny blue speck seemed
to shimmer as if it were alive. Captivated you quickly
packed up her picnic and set off towards it.
S2 (09:38):
Moon.
S1 (09:41):
As she moved closer, you could see that the shimmering
blue planet was orbiting on a tremendous loop around its star.
It's very fast orbiting at 30 kilometers per second. It
spins on its axis at around 1000 600 kilometers per hour.
(10:03):
It has one moon. It seems to be covered by
a very thin layer of gas and atmosphere. Could this
planet support life? What could it be? Had she discovered
life in space? A trillion possibilities rushed through Eunice mind
(10:25):
as she approached the spinning sparkling sphere.
S2 (10:31):
Moving.
S1 (10:35):
And just like that, it came into sharp focus the
Blue Planet was the Earth. Suspended in space, her beautiful
blue home now shimmered even more brightly than before.
S2 (10:57):
Moving.
S1 (11:01):
In that moment, Eunice made the most marvelous observation there
is life in space. We are life in space. And
we are all the crew of the most spectacular spaceship
in the universe. Everything we need to explore, the cosmos
(11:26):
is already on board. Fresh water, air supply. Thanks, trees,
lots of lovely food, especially astronaut ice cream. Fellow travellers
of all species, shapes and sizes. Plenty of room to live, love,
(11:48):
learn and play.
S2 (11:52):
Moon.
S1 (11:56):
With her mission complete and astronaut ice cream supplies severely depleted,
it was time to return home and begin a new mission.
We are all travelling through space right now. The Earth
is our spaceship and it's the only home we've got.
(12:21):
It is our mission to take care of the Earth
so that we can explore the universe four light years
to come.
S2 (12:31):
Moon.
S1 (12:34):
Finally, let's hear a quote from Neil Armstrong, who's an astronaut,
not a goldfish. I put up my thumb and shut
one eye and my thumb blotted out the Planet Earth.
I didn't feel like a giant. I felt very, very small.
(12:55):
Dedication for Emily. And that is the end of our story.
Give me some space. By Philip Bunting. Vision Australia, blindness,
live vision opportunity.
