On the Vision Australia Radio Network via Radio, digital online
and via radio dot org and across Australia on the
IPH network. Welcome to the audio description Presentation of Vision
Australia's Carols by Candlelight.
S2 (00:33):
Hello and welcome to Vision Australia's audio described Carols by
Candlelight from Melbourne's Sydney Myer Music Bowl in the domain
here in Melbourne. I'm John Westlund and I'm here together
with Susie Hill and Ian Easton. And we're broadcasting from
Roger Zealand. Together we'll be bringing you the atmosphere, the
colour and all the festive flavour of this year's Carols
(00:56):
by Candlelight. And it is the 85th year of Carols
by Candlelight here in Melbourne, and it is absolutely a
privilege to be here. So perhaps let me bring in
the team here and it's a big hello to Susie Hill.
S3 (01:12):
Great. Thank you very much. Great to be here again
this year.
S2 (01:14):
It is a bit of a privilege to be here
because this after 85 years, it is an absolute institution
in Melbourne and across across Australia.
S3 (01:23):
It is. And of course Melbourne, Sydney. I think we
do it better. There we go.
S2 (01:29):
It is always that way. So let's have a think
about it. Tonight the bowl will be the host at
the Bowl will be David Campbell. He's back. But the
new one we've got Brooke Boney, who's glamorously woman, and
of looking at the artist who everybody has given their time,
they're all volunteers for this event.
S3 (01:49):
Which is fabulous, isn't it? Gift of time is so
important and talents. Not everybody has money to give. So
sometimes being able to do this to help somebody else
is a wonderful thing indeed.
S2 (02:00):
Absolutely. So we're almost standing by now to cross to, um,
to the Myer Music Bowl where we'll be joining the events.
And I think our first up will be looking at
Simon Gleeson will be coming on to sing Oh Come
All Ye Faithful. But we're just crossing now, I think too.
(02:21):
I can see the music bowl in the background. So
let's go over to the Sydney, my music musical for
the Carols by Candlelight Vision Australia's Carols by Candlelight.
S3 (02:40):
Vision of the crowds massed into the area facing the goal.
Beautiful evening in Melbourne.

S3 (06:27):
Broken and off the shoulder read full length gown. David

our own Carols by Candlelight.
S6 (06:57):
Quite a round of applause, everybody.
UU (07:03):
To start a new year.
S6 (07:06):
Welcome, everyone, to everyone's favorite Christmas Eve tradition. Vision Australia's
Carols by Candlelight proudly presented by Amy. And welcome for
the very first time. To the left. To my bed
for the night.
UU (07:21):
For 30, everybody. And as long as.
S5 (07:29):
You guys don't mind me singing at the top of
my lungs for the entire night, I'm more than happy
to say this.
S6 (07:35):
Now, I have heard you sing. You can sing a little.
S5 (07:39):
Yeah, but tonight I'm going to sing a lot. And
therein lies the problem.
S6 (07:43):
Yes. I also know you're probably missing your family tonight,
but welcome to our Carole's family. Can we give Brooke
an official carols? Welcome with a big merry Christmas, Brooke. Ready?
On three.
S4 (07:55):
One.
S6 (07:56):
Two, three. Man.
S5 (08:00):
And merry Christmas to you guys.
S6 (08:03):
Yeah, we love this setting. It's a real privilege to
be here. The history of this ball is incredible.
S5 (08:09):
As a guerilla, Roy woman, along with the Carols by
Candlelight Family, we would like to acknowledge the traditional owners
of the land on which we are gathered tonight. Though
we're on jury war, we're on people, and we pay
our respects to their elders past and present.
S6 (08:24):
It's a fantastic setting. Looking out in the sun tonight,
setting beautifully here. As you can see there, the bowl
looks glorious. And the music you'll hear performed tonight is
some of our most wide ranging and spectacular. Yet. I'm
not just talking about, you know, Rob Mills or Bobby Fox.
You start on stage here and end up somewhere near Canberra.
They just cut loose.
S5 (08:44):
Which timber is going to be electrifying. He's a proud
Roy man. He's sung a bilingual version of you all
the voice alongside John Farnham, Olivia Newton-John and Brian May Tonight,
Silent Night with the Melbourne Gospel Choir. Can you.
S6 (08:59):
Imagine? Yeah, we saw it rehearsed yesterday. It's really special.
Emma Watkins with a smile as wide as the ball itself,
She encompasses the joy of Christmas for me.
S5 (09:09):
No argument there. Julia Stone is bringing a little bit
of cool for us.
S6 (09:13):
Yeah, a bit of folk and bringing the modern soul,
the R&B and mixing it up with a whole lot
of funk. Is the genre bending powerhouse tender, and how.
S5 (09:22):
Brilliant would it be if you could bring together for
one night only cast members from the hottest tickets going around?
I'm talking Hamilton, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and
Juliet and the super callow, fragile istic Mary Poppins.
S6 (09:37):
You've organised that.
S5 (09:38):
I sure have. And when I say I have, I do,
of course, mean that someone else.
S6 (09:43):
Has done that. I've got also to get tonight the
likes of Casey Donovan, Jason Arrow, Rob Mills.
S5 (09:49):
Ivy Palmer and loads more. It's the supergroup.
S6 (09:52):
To end all supergroup so that like if you are
actually going to go out and see any of those
shows tonight, all the leading performers are hearing the ball.
But it's a good night for understudies.
S5 (10:01):
Do you see the shows of All but the Night?
All your talent? And I expect you know who is
working tonight?
S4 (10:08):
He only really does.
S6 (10:10):
One night at work. John Foreman and the Carols by
Candlelight Orchestra.
UU (10:15):
Featuring the Melbourne Youth Orchestra. It's June 20th year as carols.
This will. Merry Christmas, everybody. Congratulations, John. No.
S6 (10:30):
Oh, okay. My bad. Oh, of course. It's Uncle Doug.
UU (10:34):
Hey, look at his cows. I can look. Why are you.
While we love you and know I'm going to.
S5 (10:44):
Need your help, you boys and girls. Who else is
going to pay some visit tonight with these reindeer?
UU (10:55):
And I'm only kidding, guy. Santa Claus is going to
be here. Boys. He goes, How about you just shout out.
S6 (11:06):
What you want Santa to bring? And Brooke and I
will go back to it and we'll write it down
on three. One, two, three.
UU (11:18):
I had. I heard a lot of.
S6 (11:19):
Apple products, as.
S5 (11:21):
I'm sure you all told said and what you want
a long time ago. But giving is important.
S6 (11:25):
And that's what tonight's all about. Carols by Candlelight is
the one major fundraiser for the year for Vision Australia's
children's service.

UU (15:19):
Legends. Thank you so much. This is of Christmas right there.
How cool was that.
S6 (15:24):
To kick the night off here on the ball?
UU (15:25):
Give em a round of applause. Now that's before my
eyes completely blind. But to quote her.
S5 (15:32):
She's cool with that. Her line of sight has never
held her back. But even for one sweet second, they
say no.
S6 (15:38):
That's right. On the contrary, Lauren actually wants to inspire people.
Now she's sung at the Invictus Games in Sydney, the
Tamworth Country Music Festival, and is currently studying a masters
in creative music therapy, which she hopes to use to
help others achieve their own goals and dreams. It's such
a special performance you're about to see. She's just incredible.
S5 (16:01):
I just find it so inspiring to see people fulfil
their potential despite the obstacles that have been placed in
their way. And that is the story from all of
the Vision Australia people have been around.
S6 (16:13):
It's a big band and it shows you the important
work that they do tonight. So don't forget, if you
can donate, please do so. The numbers on your screen

UU (17:59):
I've never fought for my.
S4 (18:05):
We see. Why so in? You'll miss it. One. Perfection
(19:03):
keeps you haunted. All you need is your best mother.
UU (19:10):
That's all anyone ever wanted. That's how we do. But. Christmas.
(20:50):
Merry Christmas. In a full length shimmering. That was just brilliant.
Thank you. Thanks so much. It was glorious. I love
that song.
S6 (21:06):
Lara is a Vision Australia client and she's been and
she has been. She's six years of age. And it's
a great reminder that tonight is a very important night
of fundraising for Vision Australia. These events couldn't be done
without the wonderful support of our generous sponsors.
S5 (21:22):
Absolutely. And thanks to Sony Pictures and their brand new
movie La la Crocodile, which opens exclusively in cinemas on
Boxing Day. That La la Crocodile is based on the
much loved children's book about a boy who discovers a
singing crocodile in his attic. As you do? Yeah. And
the pair become fans.
S6 (21:43):
Friends who have seen this happen too. It's a very
common story.
S3 (21:45):
Clip of the film. Yeah.
S6 (21:47):
Very relatable. Children's choirs. Lucky enough to meet two of
the stars. Look at this.

That's Shawn Mendes and Harvey. Vadim just casually chatting to
the call was.
S5 (22:09):
Wow. That was a very excited. I'm sure you were terrific,
as is the movie La la Crocodile. In the meantime,
here are the brilliant Australian girls and the National Boys
Choir performing one of our favorite songs.
S6 (22:22):
This is it. This is quite this choir, which all
year long they worked so, so hard. It was really
lovely of those two, you know, superstars of Hollywood, of
music to take the time out to sort of, you know,
chat to them because they work so hard, these kids.
But let's see what they've got to sing.
S5 (22:37):
I reckon. I know it's ding dong. Deck the halls.
UU (22:45):
Oh. To me.
S4 (23:05):
It's Christmas time.
UU (23:43):
Oh. It's. They don't. Oh.
S3 (24:51):
Voice. Now, in May, the blazes broke.
S4 (24:54):
Shirt and tie still still in their black trousers. Something
short of magical night. The dazzling.

Is some of the favourite traditional characters and all the
beautiful costuming that's there, the fabulous music and the digital
imagery at the back and the front of the orchestra
is just amazing. And seeing all those thousands of people
after last year when there was two men and a
dog because of COVID. It's lovely to see the Mind
(29:05):
Music bowl packed.
S2 (29:06):
Which is exactly what we're seeing right now.
S3 (29:08):
Mikayla Banus so excited to be welcoming. Oh my God.
Christmas again. Rob Mills. Tim Campbell.
S4 (29:20):
We're going to hang on to all the. So I'm
going to stay. I always thrive in it. Is it to.
Let's not let's not talk.
S6 (29:31):
About the ideas. Let's just say we're not talking to
each other. We say we no longer talk.
S4 (29:37):
When they're ten. Yep.
S9 (29:39):
I have a very important question for all of the
kids out there who can tell me who is just
about to arrive.
S4 (29:48):
So the question.
UU (29:53):
We really should try not to argue.
S4 (29:55):
This is the most wonderful. Time of the.
S6 (29:57):
Year. Yeah.
S3 (29:58):
Tim It's like handsprings over face to watch.
S8 (30:01):
Yeah, it is. I mean, not as good as grand
final day, but it's not. I mean, don't get me wrong,
Don't get me wrong. It's way up there, but it's just.
I mean, come on. How good was Robbie Williams? Here,
let me.
S3 (30:23):
By text jacket, encouraging the crowd to applaud. He didn't disappoint.
I see Rob Mills in a blue tux jacket.
S4 (30:34):
None of us ever be too old or too grown
up to search the skies.
S5 (30:38):
On Christmas Day.
S6 (30:39):
Yeah. There's nothing just so magical. Wow. Nothing gives me
a buzz like waiting up a Santa on Christmas Eve.
S8 (30:47):
Hello? Did you not just hear me sing? I mean,
you know, I know a bit of Bondi to, you know.
Thank you. Whoa.
S4 (30:52):
What's that? Well, that's just him showing off.
UU (30:55):
No, no, no, no. Pop here. It's coming down now. Oh.
It's coming down right here onto the.
S8 (31:10):
State Street because it's like, boring.
S6 (31:13):
Well, I should go and have a look what it is. Yeah.
S8 (31:19):
He's such a big kid. As if you run to
find out what it is. Okay.
S3 (31:27):
Throw them right back.
S6 (31:29):
Now, you got.
S4 (31:30):
You.
S3 (31:30):
Trying to get into the orchestra area. Tim runs around
to the back of the van. North east. China's still.
S4 (31:37):
To struggle. If I.
S8 (31:38):
Can go. Sorry. Okay. Thank you.
S3 (31:40):
Tim. Tim. In the midst of the orchestra.
S4 (31:44):
All right, then.
S5 (31:45):
Who's up for a song?
UU (31:46):
Sing along if you know it.
S3 (31:53):
Mikhail regrets the microphone round the.
S4 (31:55):
Christmas street past the Chris. Mistletoe hardware. You can't see everything.
The Christmas tree.
UU (32:12):
I will. Pumpkin pie.
S4 (32:15):
Apple juice, some.
UU (32:18):
You will get a sense. Well, you. Doctors. In the
last week, Johnny Depp has toured boughs of holly.
S3 (32:36):
Of noses twisting on the side.
S4 (32:38):
The Christmas tree had.
S3 (32:40):
Best party team still in amongst the orchestra.
UU (32:44):
When you can see him trying.
S3 (32:50):
Around the Christmas.
UU (32:51):
Tree. You ever want to hear the news? Oh.
S3 (33:10):
Rob standing on a red throne, top chair adjacent to
a big silver Christmas tree. Oh, good. Jim has a
great list.
S6 (33:21):
What do you think? It could be got in.
S3 (33:22):
On November two? This sort of thing looks papery.
S5 (33:24):
It's definitely a paper system.
S8 (33:27):
A column of two names. That's it. I mean, who
will be making a list this time of year? And, B,
flying up around in the sky? Oh, no, no, no, don't. Oh,
don't all me. No, no.
UU (33:38):
He's making a list and checking it twice. Ring any bells, though? Oh, look.
S6 (33:45):
You guys, I think this could be send his naughty and.
S4 (33:48):
Nuts list to you.
S3 (33:50):
Rob grabs the list.
S8 (33:55):
Well, the orchestra certainly do, but no, of course it's not.
Check it out for yourself. It's just a bunch of
random names.
S6 (34:00):
Well, actually, Tim, it's not random at all, because my
name's there with McKayla on one side, and your name
is on the other side of the list.
S4 (34:10):
Oh, it is. And it's not in nicely, so nobody.
S6 (34:16):
Wants to give it to me. Give it a go.
S3 (34:19):
To John Foreman. Oh, Mikayla, what's up? She's trying to
hide behind me so I can't see her.
S8 (34:27):
Mikayla, if this is is real naughty. Nice list. What
do you think May be on the one list? Like
the nice.
S4 (34:34):
List? She thought, sir, is that maybe it's like if
you just stop being really nice.
S8 (34:44):
Oh, yeah. Be a scaredy cat. It'll be fine. Okay,
you know what? My niece says that you should sing.
S4 (34:50):
You should say nothing after you go. After you. You
should sing. Please. Up to you, sir. When you sing,
you seem like an angel. Actually, You. Right? Why did
you just sing? It's Christmas. Be happy. Okay. Well, you
better watch out. You better not.
UU (35:06):
Cry. You better not pout. I'm telling you why. Did.
S4 (35:11):
You better watch out. You better not cry. You better
not have.
S3 (35:16):
A telecast in court. Pictures of elves making presents for
Santa in the background.
S4 (35:22):
Company is making a list. A list? Checking it twice.
He's going to find out who's naughty and nice to him.
Santa Claus is coming to town. He sees you when
you sleep and he knows when you are away. He
knows if you feel bad or good. So be good
(35:44):

S4 (35:58):
He sees you in your sleep.
UU (36:01):

been bad or good.
S6 (36:07):
So be good, for goodness.
S3 (36:11):

S3 (36:51):
He pulls the bear back and throws that off. Guys.
S9 (36:54):
It's him. Rob, we need a plan because Santa.
S4 (36:58):
He's on his way.
S8 (36:59):
We have been nice all night. Even from the start,
when we walked on stage together. We spoke over each other.
We were rude to each other. Oh, no. We need
a plan.
UU (37:09):
Oh, God. What's up? Oh, it's like everything's just.
S3 (37:16):
I scatter around the stage.
S4 (37:19):
It's nice.
S3 (37:21):
I can come see the shopping trolley.
S8 (37:24):
So with a hug. Oh, oh, oh. I'll be back
with a hug. This isn't Costco.
UU (37:33):
Oh, Jason. Neil. No, this is definitely definitely not Costco. Sorry.
S8 (37:39):
Oh, you're sorry? I've been losing things all day. I
lost my car keys. I lost a shopping list. I
lost my kids account. Whoa, Dave, you lost a list? Yeah,
it just blew off in the wind. Woosh, Scott.
S4 (37:56):
Oh, I have a question for you, Dave. Sure. What
was on that list?
S8 (38:01):
I know. I need to know that. No, no, no.
S6 (38:03):
We do. Yeah, we.
S4 (38:04):
Definitely. Yeah. Oh.
S8 (38:06):
Well, I was thinking of having a dinner party inviting
you guys over. If I had remember who was gluten
free and who was not. 0.3. Sorry. Oh, shut up.
That's why I'm on the other list. Yeah. Wow. It's
so great that you're gluten free, I suppose. Oh, yeah.
We need to celebrate.
UU (38:26):
We need to get the trolley back down. Down.
S3 (38:32):
The entire female dance is a Santa hat, Greg. Tights, red,
white jackets again for every ten singing.
S4 (38:42):
All of the trees are dressed in a lie.
UU (38:44):
It's time for him to simmer down. You remember.
S4 (38:51):
The time of the year.
UU (38:53):
Ended? Right. Here we go. Sense pick up when it's Chinese. Help. Dan? Dan!

They might be staying dancing, huh? Oh, well, that's how
Christmas works up. Huh? How did you go? What do
you reckon, everyone?
S3 (40:58):
Here he is. Oh, boy. Did he mention anything about lists, Harry?
S2 (41:02):
Not a word.
S3 (41:04):
Hey, Santa.
S6 (41:05):
He must be here about the naughty or nice list, right?
S8 (41:07):
Oh, thanks for reminding me, M.G.. Let's check who's on it. Sprinkles.
My naughty or nice list, please.
S3 (41:17):
One of the elves conspired with the least.

You are. Great excitement. Word Nice on the back wallpaper.
They all dance around the stage.
UU (42:03):
Love it. And while.
S8 (42:05):
We're here, let's check which list the audience is on.
UU (42:08):
Oh, look, I knew it.
S3 (42:13):
And I showed up again. Lots of children excited in
the audience, dancing around.
S4 (42:21):
It's all.
S8 (42:22):
About others. And tonight, everyone here is giving to charities.
S3 (42:30):
Lots of hand clapping starts off very happy.
S4 (42:35):
Happy to do it. Oh, oh, oh, oh. We are
not doing the dance part this time. Okay. McKayla, your line, quickly. Sure.
How about one more song? What do you do? Yes. Yes.
S8 (42:52):
I have to pop off under the trolley back. And,
you know, it's been fun. Great to see you, Santa M.C.
and Tilman. And I love you on McLeod's daughter. Mikayla,
you're fantastic. I've got they've they've got some frankfurters on
the borders.
S4 (43:07):
I had a bad batch of speeches. I say yes,
Christmas isn't about how much you really enjoy it. It's
about how you spend it. What do you say? Oh,
I say you're my son. I say, let's bring on
the beats and bring on the noise. Let's get to.
UU (43:26):
Your new Judy.
S3 (43:32):
Stars projected on the back of the paper.
S4 (43:34):
Saying no.
S3 (43:35):
Foul sounds. It's a back to back high stepping in
their silver thanks.
UU (43:40):
To everyone else. Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle bell rang
you all.
S3 (43:49):
Fancy conducting the audience.
S4 (43:51):
Open sleigh through the snow. You know what?
UU (43:57):
It's all up. Here we go. Laughing all the way.
Court tells me the.
S4 (44:06):
Case manager was quite right. But it is to say

S3 (44:19):
Sam goes back to his. It's down. And he moves
across the main line, steering his reindeer, the elves helping
at the rear and leads to stage. Sky starting to

On the Vision Australia Radio Network via Radio, Digital online
and via radio dot org and across Australia on the
IPH network. You're listening to the audio description Presentation of
Vision Australia's Carols by Candlelight.
S2 (45:03):
Being brought to you right across the Vision Australia Network.
I'm John Westlund. Susie Hill is giving us the audio
descriptions and Susie. Tim Campbell and Rob Mills, They're classics,
aren't they?
S3 (45:18):
They are a pair of naughty boys, but who cares?
Great entertainment, great fun, great rapport and with the lovely
Michela behind us as well.
S2 (45:25):
One of what you mentioned, I think earlier in the
program about the crowds with just having crowds in the
first place, but seeing Santa hats everywhere is just such
an uplifting and it's such a great view.
S3 (45:39):
Oh, it is. And also we're starting to see the
candles as the light dims. We get to see them better,
but there's some battery operated ones and there's some real
flame ones as well. And Kids with reindeer is as well. It's,
you know, lots of Christmas style tops and things. It's
just it's wonderful.
S2 (45:55):
It's great to see that. And as we're seeing that
the skies darkened, we'll be seeing a pretty spectacular sunset
here in Melbourne because today has been a corker of
a day. Just have a quick think about donating to
carols by candlelight or to the appeal that we've got
with Carols by Candlelight. Please go to give to Carol's
(46:17):
dot com or call one 800 422077. That's one 800 422077.
Or go to give to Carol's dot com to donate
to vision Australia because Carol's by candlelight is one of
our major annual fundraising opportunities. You're listening to the audio
(46:41):
description of Carols by Candlelight coming to you from the
Sydney Mine Music Bowl in the domain here in Melbourne.
Some of the things that we use carols, the funds
from Carols by Candlelight. Um, well, in fact we can't
do that because we're going back to the music bowl
right now.
S5 (47:03):
And welcome back. You are watching Vision Australia's Broken Day
by Candlelight, presented by the wonderful people that I met.
S6 (47:09):
Can you believe that Santa was just here? Right here.
S5 (47:13):
I know. I meant to tell him what I wanted
for Christmas. It's just.
S6 (47:16):
Too late. I think he's fine out there somewhere.
S5 (47:18):
Oh, I want to shout it out. It's embarrassing, they say.
S6 (47:21):
Okay. No, no. I want to keep it. You want
to keep this dress? Oh, my God. Let's show it.
That's beautiful.
S5 (47:27):
Twirls around his front couple up to couture. It's so beautiful.
S6 (47:34):

You are a princess. We also would like to quickly
thank Mikayla Bana's, Rob Mills, Tim Campbell for all their fun.

cameo there as well.
S6 (47:50):
He really did use that trolley. And I know my kids.
It would be time for bed now that Sands is
you know, he's on his way. But guess what? You
get to have a little surprise bonus because we got
something else in store.
S5 (48:01):
It's only my mama.
S6 (48:04):
Yes, that's right. You know, moms and dads and the
Watkins 1 million streams on Spotify this year and 45,000
listeners in over 105 countries.
S5 (48:16):
The other cool thing about Emma is that she incorporates

S6 (52:07):
Hang his drum. So give what you can is the message.
S5 (52:10):
That is spot on to tonight. No matter how large
or small your donation, it does not matter. Give what
you can to help Vision Australia. Help families with children
that are blind or have low vision either online or
give to carol dot com. Or you can call one

S5 (55:57):
Now what makes Christmas unforgettable, do you reckon?
S6 (56:01):
Oh, I don't know. Is it the beach? Is it
the togetherness? Is it the joy of giving?
S5 (56:06):
I reckon it's roast potatoes.
S6 (56:08):
Roast potatoes. Stay with.
S5 (56:10):
Me. You're going to boil them? Yes. You're going to
mash them up a little bit. Then you go to
cool them down. Then you go to put them in
the oil. You've got to put them in with rosemary, garlic,
a lot of salt. There's a good tip. You've twice
cooked them.
S6 (56:20):
Twice cooked roast potatoes. That's what we're going for. Okay, well,
this next man makes my Christmas unforgettable. His baritone captures
its whole spirit. You might have been lucky enough to
catch Dennis in concert in venues around Australia this year.
S5 (56:34):
He's also released a Christmas single. We Need a Little
Christmas with Andre, Rio's star soprano Urrutia.
S6 (56:41):
So it's a pleasure to once again say, here is Mr.
Dennis Walter and it is the most wonderful.
UU (56:47):
Time of the year, Dennis.
S3 (56:52):
When it comes to stages like tuxedo. Oh.

And merry Christmas to you. I was just reflecting there
were a lot of things that probably have happened this
year that have been a bit awkward for many. As
we settle back into normality. But I wanted to reflect
about some of the things that I've loved doing. I
love doing my radio on three. And hello to all
the people who are listening right up the East Coast
on to GB in Sydney and for BBC on nine
(59:48):
radio and of course watching right around Australia. And I
was just thinking about these things, things that are good
this year. Did anyone notice Geelong won the Premiership?
S3 (01:00:03):
Dennis lives in Geelong. Well.
S7 (01:00:06):
With all those boos, I won't mention back to back.
It's a chance. But a very special moment is about to. Happily.
I knew this would happen.
S3 (01:00:22):
He tears up.

Vision Australia's Carols by Candlelight.
S2 (01:06:00):
And the audio descriptions coming from Susie Hill. I'm John
Westland and we're bringing you this service across the Valley
Radio Network. Once again, let's remind people that it is
one of the biggest fundraising opportunities for Vision Australia each year,
and in fact, it is the biggest. So we'd love
(01:06:21):
people to donate go to give to carols dot com
or call one 842 2077 give to Carol's dot com

money for is we provide not limited to occupational therapy,

early childhood education, speech pathology, physiotherapy orientation and mobility training
and indeed the library services which are pretty important. And
also volunteers. There are over 500 volunteers operating on the
radio service. And each week we bring news and information
(01:07:06):
to the print disabled people with a disability. You're listening
to the audio description of Carols by Candlelight coming to
you from the Sydney Mind Music Bowl, and we'll be
returning there very shortly. Susie It's been pretty good so far.
But I think there's plenty to still to come.
S3 (01:07:25):
Oh, absolutely. Some more of our all time favorite still.
And again, I keep looking as the lights are brought
up against the darkening sky. Each time I have another
flash to the audience, it's like, Oh, I could see
more candles. It's just amazing because people move them around
and it must be spectacular to say that from the stage.
S2 (01:07:44):
Absolutely. And it is. In fact, that's one of the
great things about the Carols by Candlelight. I have also
noticed that everybody has a red hat on with Amy.
And it is important to note that Amy is one
of the key sponsors of this year's Carols by Candlelight.
You're listening to the audio description of Carols by Candlelight
(01:08:05):
coming to you from the Sydney Myer Music Bowl. We've
just looking at there's a presentation on behalf of Vision
Australia at the moment with a couple of the clients,
Jemma in particular.
S9 (01:08:19):
She is five months old. She had an excess of
pressure in her eyes and that caused damage to her
optic nerve. Yeah, I can see like everything with my
good eye, but in my bed it kind of looks weird.
Like stuff looks weird. Having been told this is what
Jemma had just Such as? I couldn't get out of
this dark tunnel. I think the diagnosis of that and
(01:08:41):
not knowing what it meant. That was one time along
when I lost my dad, when I felt devoid of hope.
You've got this tiny baby, and they're telling you that
they don't know what site she has. It's not delivered
in a awful way, but it's just told, as a
matter of fact. And you know, you want someone to say,
it's fine, everything's going to be okay. Don't worry about it.
(01:09:03):
These things happen. It's all good and no one does.
The help that we have with Vision Australia. They normalise
things for us. Like for Jim, anything is possible. Whatever
she wants to do. And this is where a vision
is driving really good with enabling her to have the
confidence to advocate for herself. People have things that happen
(01:09:23):
to them and might make their life a little bit
difficult at times, but you can always offer your hand
and offer your help. That's what vision Australia did for us.
They offered their hand to us when we need a Dick.
S3 (01:09:38):
Cheney dancing gym or on play equipment. The gamer learning
how to work in the kitchen.
S6 (01:09:43):
Welcome back to Vision Australia's Carols by Candlelight, presented by
Amy and welcome to Jemma and the family who are
here tonight with us at the Bowl. Hi, Jemma. We
can see down there they wa.
S5 (01:09:53):
Yeah, it was Jim. As mom Nova said in the
video is it's a huge reason we're all here tonight.
S6 (01:10:00):
Yeah, that's right. Seeing the immediate results have come from
Vision Australia's holding out their hand to the children and
their families in a time of confusion and despair is
really heartwarming.
S5 (01:10:11):
And tonight you can help reach out to Vision Australia.
Keep on helping those families with children that are blind
or who have low vision. Head online to give to
carols dot com or you can phone one 842 2077.
S6 (01:10:23):
All right, moving on. Jazz, contemporary music, theatre, light opera.
The sheer vocal range of our next performer is breathtaking.
S5 (01:10:31):
This is a lady who a lot of people look
forward to each Christmas. She's a very special part of
our Carols family.
S6 (01:10:39):
As she's currently performing as the fairy godmother in Cinderella
at Sydney's Lyric Theatre singing How Great Thou Art. Please enjoy.
Sylvie Palladino.
S3 (01:10:55):
So the inner shimmering. Malek.
UU (01:10:58):
Can I? I know someone who does.
S4 (01:11:07):
Consider. My hands. I see this town as.
UU (01:11:25):
Morning sun. I come to. The universe to.
S4 (01:11:38):
And since my.
UU (01:11:43):
My secret was to leave. How sweet. Oh, great. Oh, great. Oh, great. Oh,
he seems nice. How great does.
S4 (01:12:23):
90.
UU (01:12:28):
So spare me. Sent him to die. Scared to. Nine. Oh. Nine. Oh. My. We.
(01:13:00):
Nice to see. From. We shot. To me. Oh, my. Oh. Oh. Oh, sure. Oh,
(01:13:50):
my God. Oh, my.
S4 (01:13:56):
And you see.
UU (01:14:23):
Why? I just keep getting better and better. And what
(01:15:17):
an honor to be here.
S5 (01:15:18):
Love to hear.
S6 (01:15:20):
I mean, that was extraordinary, knocking out the ball once again.
So it was just incredible.
S5 (01:15:25):
Now, can you explain to me, because I hear that
and I think, wow, what an incredible song. Yeah. But
the vocal range that someone needs to be able to
sing something like that, it's very impressive, isn't it?
S6 (01:15:36):
It's more than impressive. There are a lot of singers
who are watching right across Australia, maybe around the world,
when this goes to YouTube, stuff that we'll see Sylvia
sing like that and go, Really? That is extraordinary. She
is like absolute top tier level singer in this country.
Sylvia Palladino Every year just crushes it, doesn't she?
UU (01:15:53):
Another round of applause, All right. Because she really is
quite amazing and we're just so. What a joy to.
S6 (01:15:59):
Have her as part about that.
S5 (01:16:00):
And she did it in a stunning dress. Right.
S6 (01:16:04):
My degree of difficulty is hard. Yeah, absolutely.
S5 (01:16:07):
Now, in a show of moments, this next moment is
perhaps one of the most heartwarming. It is so amazing
that this could be organized.
S6 (01:16:18):
Yeah, this is incredible. The Central Australian Aboriginal Women's Choir
contains 25 core members who come from six remote communities,
all within a thousand kilometre radius throughout Central Australia.
S5 (01:16:31):
I'm sorry, did you just say a thousand kilometres.
S6 (01:16:34):
In kilometre radius?
S5 (01:16:35):
Yeah, that's all. Okay.
S6 (01:16:36):
Tough for rehearsal. Yeah.
S5 (01:16:38):
Well, most of the older ladies in this group, they've
been singing in their respective choirs since they were just
young girls. So they've all grown up in their choirs.
S6 (01:16:49):
Yeah, that's right. And they're keeping an extraordinary tradition alive.
The German missionaries brought hymns and melodies to the desert.
Those same hymns and melodies are still being sung and
passed down for generations later.
S5 (01:17:02):
It's an absolutely incredible feat, not just logistically, but it's
also incredible that we all get to be here to
witness this tonight. Yeah. So the carol with the shepherds,
I will hasten originally written in German, as we mentioned.
Tonight being sung in the Western language. But this isn't
just singing songs. This is the power of heritage.
S6 (01:17:25):
Please make very welcome. The Central Australian Aboriginal Women's Choir.
UU (01:17:46):
Dividend. You got. He added about 30 the. No. Oh. I'm. Yea. Yea. Yea. Yea. Yea.
S3 (01:18:31):
Christian kaftans that earthy cotton. Right. 90. In traditional Aboriginal.
UU (01:18:47):
Patterns. Charlie. 99.99.
S4 (01:19:12):
We already.
UU (01:19:24):
Oh. He. He had to find. Well. I may have.
(01:19:52):
Soon folders decorated inked paintings star. Pass to the audience.
My wife and.
S4 (01:20:12):
Leave the stage.
UU (01:20:18):
Incredible. You know.
S5 (01:20:20):
It's it's so special to be able to be here
tonight to witness that, because to be able to see
people singing in their own language on television and connecting
to their faith in that way is it's it's we're
all very lucky to have witness.
S6 (01:20:36):
Can I ask you as well, you know, how important
is it to then hear that language on a show
like tonight, one of the biggest shows of the year
and its carols and everyone? How much is it for
young indigenous people out there to hear their language songs
on this stage?
S5 (01:20:52):
It's incredibly important. I mean, these are all songs that
we know and love. And then to be able to
bring in such a special part of our indigenous culture.
It's beautiful. It's absolutely beautiful.
S6 (01:21:02):
Well, it's a real thrill and real joy.
S5 (01:21:04):
And conductor Maurice Stewart and the Central Australian Aboriginal Women's Choir, the.
S6 (01:21:09):
Yeah, I'm doing.
UU (01:21:09):
A great reaction starts the show. All right. From Central
Australia to.
S6 (01:21:14):
Zimbabwe, where our next performer was born, this is one
commanding lady.
S5 (01:21:19):
Boy, she is about to knock off your brand new
Christmas sock circuit.
S6 (01:21:23):
Her style is all on. Her latest album, Life in
Colour was nominated for best album in the 2022 Music
Victoria Awards and she recently finished up her reintroduction to
playing at venues and festivals right across the country.
S5 (01:21:38):
Such positive energy. Welcome to the stage Tandoh and grown
up Christmas list.
S3 (01:21:56):
Two in a purple gown.
S4 (01:22:00):
I sat upon your knee. Slow to. The childhood fantasy. Well, I'm.
Can you? Oh. So he is.
UU (01:22:31):
By no means. It's.
S4 (01:22:39):
Not for my sake.
UU (01:22:41):
For. No. Let's talk.
S4 (01:23:26):
Christmas.
UU (01:23:32):
What is the.
S4 (01:23:32):
Solution?
UU (01:23:34):
Call me in a sense. Like. Oh. This is my
(01:24:42):
Grown-Up Christmas. This is. Christmas.
S4 (01:24:58):
Leave.
UU (01:25:19):
That was so beautiful. I love that. And how.
S5 (01:25:22):
Beautiful does our audience look tonight with all their.
S6 (01:25:24):
Candidates that you can was up there. Everybody, let's have
a look at them. Why them? Oh, my gosh. Laura SEABROOK,
your first time. But this moment is so special. Raise
them up. Shake it. Yes. You know, we left out
what you're talking about.
S3 (01:25:37):
The candles moving around lutely incredible.
S5 (01:25:40):
This is so special.
S6 (01:25:42):
Good. You warming them up? That's good. We need this
great rehearsal, everybody, Because it is time.
S4 (01:25:50):
Brooke, this.
S5 (01:25:51):
Is so exciting for me. Introducing choirmaster Doug Hayward. This
is his moment out front, conducting his choir. Get ready
to raise your candles and join in on the tradition
as the Cowles by Candlelight Choir perform.
UU (01:26:05):
The Hallelujah chorus I got. Oh. Oh. No. Want to.
(01:27:20):
He is. And so on and on. And. I know.
S3 (01:27:57):
Foreman is conducting the audience and he's holding a large single.
UU (01:28:04):
No, no. Yeah. Think. You know.
S3 (01:29:36):
John Foreman's magic moment with the symbols.
S9 (01:29:40):
Me right now is because he is a tornado. Yeah.
S3 (01:29:45):
Francesca and Andrew speaking.
S8 (01:29:47):
Suffers low vision because of his albinism. He's got nystagmus,
so his eyes move around a lot.
S9 (01:29:53):
Because often he'll read and he'll put his chin down.
And that helps his eyes to stop. That's called like,
the null point. When Raph was born, I had an
instinct that he did have albinism. I knew that something
wasn't quite right. When we went to the ophthalmologist, we
were then told that he was blind. The following day,
(01:30:13):
Vision Australia phoned us and do you remember? And they
were just like, Don't worry, we've got you, you know,
we'll come out next week. You know, here's some things
that you can look at because, you know, we just
started Googling for the second ophthalmologist appointment we went to.
We found out he could see ten centimetres in front.
(01:30:34):
I was holding him and we both locked eyes and
he gave me a little smile and I smiled and
cried a lot because I'd been missing that. The early intervention,
that vision Australia provided for Rahaf was an absolute game changer.
RAF started four year old Kinnear this year and Vision
Australia thought it would be a really great idea to
create this little book that would explain Raf's disability with
(01:30:58):
his class nights. Like, for example, you can help me
by telling me where you are. Hi, RAF. I'm walking
behind you. We're still linked in with Vision Australia and
we hope to be for ever.

And BBC two stations, Melbourne here in Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin, Albany, Bendigo, Geelong, Mildura, Shepparton, Warrnambool, Warragul, Hobart, Devonport, Launceston, Sydney,
Newcastle and Wollongong. That's all hearing the audio described version
of Carols by Candlelight. And we'd have to say that
(01:32:43):
last segment was really the Coral segment with the magnificent
Central Australian Women's Choir. And then of course the Carols
by Candlelight Choir.
S3 (01:32:52):
As quite moved by the original women. It's just it's
nice to hear things in language, even though I can't
understand what it means. It is nice to hear language
being used more and more.
S4 (01:33:04):
Absolutely. You know.
S2 (01:33:05):
Yeah, yeah. People and such an inspiration to younger Aboriginals,
as Brooke Boney mentioned, that when you hear your own
language spoken, you b you stand a little taller.
S3 (01:33:15):
Oh, absolutely. And it's hoping to retain that language instead
of it being lost, which would be such a shame.
S2 (01:33:21):
And then to have it bookended by the Carols by
Candlelight Choir with Handel's masterpiece.
S3 (01:33:27):
Oh, absolutely. And you notice I stood up. I can't
help it because King George, the something Maestri is not
good sang at a performance. And that's been a tradition
ever since to stand when it's being sung.
S2 (01:33:38):
We're moving back now to the Myer music Bowl.
S3 (01:33:41):
Now look at all the candles. Now it's quite dark. Beautiful.
Only little candle shining.
S6 (01:33:47):
Welcome back to Vision Australia's Carols by Candlelight, presented by Amy.
Are you enjoying the night so far? Brooke, It is

Bonnie Anderson. I can't wait. She's the real reason I'm here.
I mean, I love you, but she's the real reason.
S6 (01:34:07):
Yeah, it's just. It might be a little bit of
a wrinkle with that one little bit of a story.
S5 (01:34:12):
Well, if she says she's not here, she better have
a really, really, really good reason.
S6 (01:34:17):
Oh, she's got a great reason. She had a baby
four days ago.
S5 (01:34:20):
Oh, okay. Yeah.
S6 (01:34:21):
Look at little Bobby. Bobby Ray Morrison, born four days ago.
A little Christmas baby. So congratulations, Bon. And we hope
you enjoy this family time. But next year, Brooke, expect
you here on the set.

performer in 2015 with his massive hit of Dancing on
My Own. I love that version of that song. And
now get this. That is up to 1 billion streams
on Spotify. That's Calum Scott for you, blitzing it.
S5 (01:45:04):

personal and emotional work yet, and he keeps adding dates
to his world tour that continues next year.

S6 (01:47:52):
There's only one way we can follow that, and that
is with the leading lady of Australian musical theatre, Marina Prior.
UU (01:48:02):
Now, Marina starred in the 2011 production of.
S6 (01:48:06):
Mary Poppins and makes a welcome return to the upcoming
production at Her Majesty's Theatre in Melbourne early next year.
But we get to enjoy her incredible soprano voice right now.
S5 (01:48:17):
So let's see those candles one more time. This is
a jam, Australia. We have angels we've heard on high.
Please welcome.
S3 (01:48:25):

Was pretty What's on stand, Amy Roadside cheer Is this
van parked on the top of the hill up there?
It's been a busy van. Amy had a cracking idea
last year and it's a way of grabbing the joy
that we all experience right here at the Bowl every
year and then taking it to the streets. Just watch
how it's grown.
S9 (01:54:10):
Amy is thrilled to support Vision Australia's Carols by Candlelight
and bring the joy of Carols to the Community without
any Cheer emergency campaign.
S6 (01:54:20):
Last year, Amy packed up their roadside cheer assist fan
and delivered a.
S3 (01:54:24):
Little extra Christmas.
S6 (01:54:25):
Spirit to those who needed it. Oh, and the people
wanted more so. And he stepped up again and took
the idea further than ever. Their roadside carolers responded to
cheer emergencies near and far, sharing the joy of carols
with so many in the community, giving more people in
more places, more chances to unite in song.
S9 (01:54:47):
Please keep the Love coming Australia and donate to help
brighten the lives of children who are blind or have
low vision from all of us. Here at Amy, we
wish you and your families a safe and Merry Christmas.
S4 (01:54:59):
Amy.
S6 (01:55:04):
And a huge thanks to Amy for supporting Vision Australia
again tonight as the presenting partner. We love your cookie
little van, we love your work, and we still have
some of Australia's biggest names set to perform tonight, so
it's still a full show. Julia Stone. Casey Donovan.
S5 (01:55:20):
Sam Fischer Oh my gosh, some absolute favourites. But now
is the time to get your dancing shoes out of
the wardrobe. Vika and Linda are all here and they're
about to hit the stage.
S6 (01:55:30):
Yeah, the sisters want to make a Christmas record that
you could dance to while you're cooking lunch potatoes on
Christmas Day, making the Christmas food and broke. They have
done it.
S5 (01:55:40):
These are my kind of gals.
S6 (01:55:41):
They really are their eighth studio album, Gee whiz, it's Christmas.
What a great title is out now. Apple for me,
right across the country from January on the Red Hot
summer tour alongside Paul Kelly, Bernard Fanning, Missy Higgins and
their memoir No Bull. Another great title was released in October.
What more can you say?
S5 (01:56:00):
Nothing. Let you do the talking, get up and dance
with their cover of the iconic Tom Petty song Christmas
All Over Again. It is Vigor and Linda Go.
S3 (01:56:14):
Sisters with their band behind them.
UU (01:56:21):
Both in black.
S3 (01:56:25):
Speaker with the white jacket. Linda with the black jacket
is my time again.
S4 (01:56:32):
And her decorations.
UU (01:56:35):
Are all hung by the fire. And everybody. And so.
(01:57:00):
Please stands countries. Haven't seen a. I just don't want it.
(01:57:27):
I guess. And all of.
S4 (01:57:38):
Little kids gonna get down.
UU (01:57:42):
Christmas is a rocky time. My. I don't know. Again.
(01:58:40):
This is a rocky time. Your body just is not.
S4 (01:58:58):
And finally.
UU (01:59:02):
Happy. I hope you have a. How can I get
the shopping? I guess. Yeah.
S3 (01:59:51):
But no step and wave to the audience. Tell me.
S6 (01:59:58):
Now that is tonight. In a nutshell. It is all
about family.
S5 (02:00:02):
So true to everyone out there, no matter how you're
spending Christmas, we hope that you feel a part of
our family tonight.
S6 (02:00:09):
And for the children and families that vision Australia support.
Know that our plan is for this to be the
brightest carols yet.
S5 (02:00:17):
After 85 years that is a huge claim they say
but keep giving it give to carols dot com or
you can call one 842 2077 and we really can
make a difference and light up our lives. I mean
we've seen the videos tonight work that vision Australia does
in the community is absolutely incredible.
S6 (02:00:36):
It really is important we forget about, you know, when
a diagnosis like this happens, it doesn't just affect the child,
it affects the family, it affects the people around them, grandparents,
aunties and uncles.
S4 (02:00:45):
So the more.
S6 (02:00:46):
That, you know, we know that our performance and donating
their time, everyone has tonight to be here. So if
you can donate at home as well we can speak
to especially meeting the families and just the important work
the vision Australia does year in, year out. And this
is the one big night of the year where they
raise the most money.
S5 (02:01:04):
Yeah, so let's make it nice and bright for them.
The thing that I love is that, you know, they
can help support them as soon as they get a diagnosis.
And that is so, so special.
S6 (02:01:12):
All right. These next two performers are set to light
up the whole arena. It can get pretty wild with
these two. But like the lions at Taronga Zoo, they
do occasionally go rogue.
S5 (02:01:22):
We're not going to let that escape. Of course, we
are talking about Rob Mills and Bobby Fox. Rob is
playing Shakespeare in the upcoming new hit musical and Juliet
opening in Melbourne in February.
S6 (02:01:33):
While Bobby is currently Courtney Collins in Hairspray. That's on
in Adelaide as we speak and is opening in Sydney
in February.
S5 (02:01:40):
Performing Sleigh Ride and Merry Christmas, everyone. Alive and Dangerous.
It is Rob Mills and Bobby Fox.
S4 (02:01:53):
Just hear those sleigh bells jingling ring ting ting a ling, too.
Come on. It's lovely weather for a sleigh ride together
with you.
S3 (02:02:02):
See in a burgundy jacket.
UU (02:02:04):
Always fall falling. And friends are calling you for you.
Come on. It's lovely weather for a sleigh ride.
S4 (02:02:10):
Together with you.
S3 (02:02:13):
The media. Giddy up. Let's go. I'll be in a
dark green texture.
UU (02:02:18):
We're running into one of. Giddy up. Giddy up. Yup.
It's great. Just holding your hand. Along with the song,
I'm Happy to Be Back.
S4 (02:02:32):
Zigzag Nice and Rosy Yankovic Hosiery. We covered up together
like Two Birds of a Feather may be. Let's take
that roving chorus and sing a chorus or to.
UU (02:02:46):
Come on, let's. Lovely. So you're back together with him.
But there's a happy feeling. The world combined When you.
S4 (02:02:56):
Toss around the coffee and the pie can pie. It's
a little bit like that picture my career and.
UU (02:03:06):
And these wonderful things, other things we remember us through
our guys, these wonderful things. Other people remember up to.
S3 (02:03:14):
Make friends across the stage.
UU (02:03:27):
All round. Jimmy Page. Having fun. Tis the season to be.
Not just. Merry Christmas. And why?
S4 (02:03:56):
Room is swaying.
UU (02:03:57):
Smashing records being read. He also told me.
S4 (02:04:05):
Oh.
S3 (02:04:06):
I wish female dancers come in. What was so bad
to spend? Boys. Join in the dance routine.
S4 (02:04:22):
With the girls.
UU (02:04:27):
So. She. We're gonna. You. One.
S4 (02:04:47):
Suede.
UU (02:04:48):
Suede may be on the side. He likes to have
all of this every day with Christmas. Merry Christmas, everyone. Barry.
(02:05:08):
Everyone got to. Must have been quite.
S4 (02:05:22):
Towards the orchestra and.
UU (02:05:23):
High five, eight, seven. Merry Christmas, everybody. This is not
that far. Oh, my God. But now, alongside her brother, Angus,
our next artist will be.
S5 (02:05:37):
Performing at the Summersault festivals in January and February. Together,
they have released five studio albums, winning the 2010 Best
Album ARIA Award for their breakout release Down This Way.
S6 (02:05:48):
And Julia has branched out on her own with a
festive album called Christmas Everything Is Christmas, which features a
heartfelt collection of classics and covers like Joni Mitchell and
Mariah Carey. I mean, just Glorious sunshine, amazing voice.
S5 (02:06:04):
Absolute best songs there. Now with a wondrous take on
a family favourite. It's a real treat to have her
here tonight. Please welcome Julia Stone and it's beginning to
look a lot like Christmas.
S4 (02:06:33):
It's beginning to look a lot like Greece. Everywhere you go,
take a look In the seven towns glisten and once
again with candy canes and silver linings of glass.
S3 (02:06:50):
I had some.
UU (02:06:51):
Trouble. I like this time.
S4 (02:06:56):
Star. They're pretty excited to see it, as I think it.
UU (02:07:02):
Would be on your own standing there. Down from the
top and go through all the presents and. You know, you.
S4 (02:07:17):
Wait for school to start again. It's beginning now. I guess.
UU (02:07:23):
Those. Everywhere you go.
S4 (02:07:28):
There's a change.
UU (02:07:31):
On this kind of stuff. It's beginning to look a lot.
So that.
S4 (02:07:47):
I was just saying that.
S3 (02:07:57):
Dress is a bustier and selling skirt message is to.
UU (02:08:31):
And. Merry Christmas, Julia. So much. And thank you to
big up on the banjo, Ben.
S6 (02:08:52):
Thanks, Ben.
S4 (02:08:53):
That was beautiful.
S5 (02:08:54):
We've had some interesting variations on some classics tonight, haven't we?
S6 (02:08:58):
Yep. That's what I love about, like, this sort of
music and about Christmas music as that. You hear so
many different people put their own takes on things. And
that's what I love because you can have like 50
different versions of that song and they're all just as
good as the loss.
S5 (02:09:11):
We're all just so beautiful and everyone just puts their
own little touch on it.
S6 (02:09:14):
Yeah, but I've not heard that before. I love her
voice and I love having the banjo on it too.
Gives a little bit of country, a little bit of downtown.
S5 (02:09:22):
A little bit of trumpet in there as well. If
you don't.
S6 (02:09:24):
Need a trumpet as well.
S5 (02:09:25):
Yeah, It's Christmas after all.
S6 (02:09:27):
Now, there are some really cool fresh faces. And here
is another one, you and Mr. Victor, which is from Ms..
He was in Legally Blonde. He was in Kinky Boots.
This guy will not be pinned down. He can do
a lot.
S5 (02:09:42):
Including starring as Joseph in the perennial favorite, Joseph and
the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, which must finish in Melbourne Sunday,
January the eighth, before heading to the Capital Theatre in
Sydney from February 11th.
S6 (02:09:54):
Yeah, guaranteed you will hear him up. The back of
this man has a voice. Please enjoy your investment storage with. Oh,
Holy night. Oh.
S4 (02:10:17):
The stars are brightly which. He is the head of
our team. Saviors. The Greenville. He and. She. So. Since. Me,
(02:10:59):
Joy says. For you.
UU (02:11:02):
Under. I knew in.
S4 (02:11:08):
Explore. Was. Christ was. TV.
S3 (02:11:59):
Oh 19. National Boys Choir back in their red robes
with white sash.
UU (02:12:11):
So this. He. Is. So we. Oh. Night. Oh. Oh.
(02:14:09):
Thank you so much.
S6 (02:14:16):

S1 (02:14:49):
On the Vision Australia Radio Network via Radio, digital online,
via radio dot org and across Australia on the IPH network.
You're listening to the audio description Presentation of Vision Australia's
Carols by Candlelight.
S2 (02:15:07):
And thanks to the generosity of all of those people
who are watching today's Carols by Candlelight, I can let
you know that we have ticked over $520,000 in donations
since this show has begun. What a fabulous effort. $20
could help kids access to give kids access to tactile
(02:15:29):
books so they can enjoy storytime as well. That's $20.
So if you go to give to Carol's dot com,
give to Carol's dot com or call one 842 2077.
That's one 842 2077. You could become one of the
more than 4000 people who've donated and got that tally
(02:15:52):
up to four 520 odd thousand dollars. So thanks to
the generosity of everybody. But we need your help. We
want to make sure here at Vision Australia, we want
to ensure that no one is left behind. Anybody with
a print disability blindness. We want to have the opportunity
(02:16:13):
to help them. You're listening to Carols by Candlelight. The
audio described version of Carols by Candlelight coming from the
Sydney Myer Music Bowl in the Domain in Melbourne. And Susie,
it's been a pretty good show so far.
S3 (02:16:27):
Certainly has. And nice to see some old familiar faces
and some new ones. Always good for that to happen.
S2 (02:16:33):
It is, yeah. And we have to see the generations
move on and and the broadening of access, as we
saw before with the Aboriginal Central Australian Aboriginal Women Squad.
S3 (02:16:43):
That was magic. Now, back at the bowl and outside
is completely dark and it's just a myriad of candles
showing up on the stage. This is Phantom cast. So.
S4 (02:17:06):
Today will draw just to show.
S3 (02:17:08):
Men in suits, the women in AP gowns.
S4 (02:17:11):
And three.
UU (02:17:15):
With Bonds held up before him.
S4 (02:17:19):
Great.
UU (02:17:20):
I'll tell you all about it. Oh, come on. Yes.
(02:17:41):
Julian Bond and. Right? Right. Yes. Oh, really? Right. Bye bye. Oh, great.
(02:18:06):
What a night it was.
S4 (02:18:07):
A crowd. Exuberant the crowd. All good tidings for Chile. Kobe, sport,
New Year. Raise the bar. Have a feast that's finally here.
And we can say. I was praying. I just not.
It just seemed like a dream. I did. I just.
(02:18:29):
It's tough to see sound. Yeah.
S3 (02:19:17):
Very clever arrangement that incorporated some of the music out of.
S4 (02:19:20):
Phantom with the well known song, actually.
S3 (02:19:23):
Very cleverly done.
S6 (02:19:25):
Successful and beloved musicals.
UU (02:19:28):
The Phantom of the Opera. What about that rock? What
a cast led by Josh Berman and Amy Manson. Great
to see you all again.
S6 (02:19:38):
Thank you all so much. Now, this.
S5 (02:19:40):
Spectacular new Australian production of Phantom enjoyed a record breaking
sell out season at the Sydney Opera House earlier this
year and is currently wowing audiences at Arts Centre Melbourne.
S6 (02:19:50):
Yeah, what a night. You are watching Vision Australia's Carols
by Candlelight, presented by Amy Now Show. This is normally
the time.
S4 (02:20:01):
When the babies.
S6 (02:20:02):
In the crowd start to fall asleep. See, they're falling
asleep right now. Christmas can be a good time to
slow down. Slow down. I'm saying that because my kids
are still up and they need to go to bed.
They need to just please go to bed. Mom's texted
me three times.
S5 (02:20:18):
Go to bed. We're going to tell Santa if you
keep this up. Now, carols is a chance to stop
and reflect. Reflect about your family. My family are at
home watching tonight, so I just want to give a
quick shout out to Caroline, Josiah, Eli and Ivy, Peyton
and little Goldie, who's having her first Christmas. So it's
her first Carol.
S6 (02:20:37):
It's so exciting.
S5 (02:20:38):
It's so exciting. And the enormous number of children and
families Vision Australia support as well. We want to make
this the biggest and brightest carols yet. So.
S6 (02:20:47):
That's right. And Vision Australia's aim is for children who
are blind or have low vision to live the life
that they choose.
S5 (02:20:53):
So if you can please give. You can call one
842 2077 or you can head to give to carols
dot com.
S6 (02:21:00):
All right. Keep giving and we will keep the entertainment coming.
Our next performer giving his time is Sam Fisher.
S5 (02:21:07):
Brilliant.
S6 (02:21:08):
Awesome.
S5 (02:21:09):
Love him.
S6 (02:21:09):
So Aussie singer songwriter, best known for his breakout hit
This City that went viral on TikTok and then spent
a huge five consecutive weeks at number one on the
ARIA singles chart.
S5 (02:21:21):
He has written and sung with Demi Lovato, toured with
his good mate, Lewis Capaldi. His latest single, Carry It Well,
is going absolutely gangbusters.
S6 (02:21:30):
Does say well with this Christmas. Give it up, everybody,
for Sam Fisher.
S4 (02:21:52):
Oh, mistletoe. I'm going to get to know you better.
This is. How much first quarter they. His press release. Minister.

UU (02:23:46):

S4 (02:23:57):
To be specific and.
UU (02:24:02):
Yes. Oh. More. Yes. Oh, man, that was awesome. Hey, Sam,
(02:24:36):
Thanks for being part of the night. Now, this next lady,
she just makes me proud. And I'm proud of by
the minute. She's about to start. And Juliette.
S5 (02:24:43):
At Melbourne's Regent in.
S6 (02:24:44):
February. Yeah, she's phenomenal. She's premiering a brand new single,
Shake It on New Year's Eve.
S5 (02:24:50):
And as a Sydney world pride ambassador, she's going to
co-host and perform as Sydney Will Pride 2023.
S6 (02:24:57):
She's busy. She's very busy. Australia performing Christmas Baby, Please
Come Home and Amazing Grace. Let's go. Crazy ball.
UU (02:25:05):
It's Casey Donovan. Draw royal blue.
S3 (02:25:14):

S5 (02:27:47):
Amazing. I want to wish you all of you and
love you, too. Thank you so much. Oh, gosh, I'm.
S9 (02:27:55):
Nervous. It's not a big night or anything. You're all amazing.
I want to wish you all a very merry, happy,
safe Christmas and an amazing new Year. I get to
sing a ballad this year, so just calm my nerves.
But you know what would be really beautiful if you sang.
UU (02:28:16):
Along with me?
S3 (02:28:26):
The Melbourne.
S4 (02:28:29):
Gospel Choir. It's amazing to meet her homemade. Whose house

S9 (02:32:22):
Be here for Karen's by candlelight tonight.
S3 (02:32:25):
Very special time in the war. And since.
S9 (02:32:29):
And it's about giving. We want to wish you.
S5 (02:32:32):
Merry Christmas with your whole family.
S6 (02:32:38):
Hey, this is Shawn.
S4 (02:32:38):
Mendes from La La It crocodile. I hope you're all
enjoying Christmas Eve and candles by candlelight. And if you can,
please donate to Vision Australia for all of the wonderful
work they do year round. Merry Christmas, Australia.
S6 (02:32:51):
Hi, everyone. Rob Mills here. I don't have, in a way.
S3 (02:32:54):
Juliet at the Region Theatre.
S9 (02:32:56):
Premiering in February. Oh, yeah, It's.
S6 (02:32:58):
Coming right up. Do not miss it. Sorry. There's no
Santa like there is tonight facing. But we wanted to
wish you a very, very merry Christmas.
S4 (02:33:05):
They said We would love to wish you and your
family a very merry.
S7 (02:33:09):
Christmas and please support the Vision Australia. They do such
a wonderful job.
S2 (02:33:14):
So donate if you can.
S3 (02:33:16):
At a very critical.
S1 (02:33:23):

S1 (02:33:57):
On the Vision Australia Radio Network via Radio, Digital online
and via radio dot org and across Australia on the
IPH network. You're listening to the audio description Presentation of
Vision Australia's Carols by Candlelight.
S2 (02:34:12):
And I can see your donations rolling in. But of course,
we still need more. We are Vision Australia. We are
very keen to ensure that no one is left behind
and we need your donations. And this is our one
big night. Suzie In that last bracket we saw two
exceptional what I think were exceptional arrangements of two classics,
(02:34:35):
some of joy and Amazing Grace. As a chorister, how
do you how difficult is that sort of thing to do?
S3 (02:34:44):
I sing what's put in front of me, but you've
got to have somebody who can arrange, and that's an
absolute art. And to have something like a song of
joy interwoven with masquerade from Phantom is extraordinary. My mind
just boggles thinking about that. And then with Casey, with
the backing of the Melbourne Gospel Choir, each of whom
is probably a soloist in their own right, but there
(02:35:06):
to compliment her performance, some of it will have been
her sort of adlib style singing as well. But it's
just I have such a love of vocal and particularly
some of these traditional things that are done slightly differently
to capture a new audience. So, you know, kudos to
whoever who did the arrangements, plus the amazing singers as well.
S2 (02:35:28):
Yeah, it was one of the highlights of the evening
for me, both of those performances. But of course, there's
still plenty to come. We've got looking forward in the
next segment, we mentioned Cody Simpson, who turns his hand
at swimming as well. But he's also a very accomplished performer.
So something to look forward to. Just a reminder, once again,
(02:35:52):
we'd love to have your donations. Your donations. Call one
842 2077 one 842 2077.
S9 (02:36:03):
We were told, you know, we don't know when she's
going to speak again to know that three she started
walking and you know, at four she's going to be
starting kindergarten. It's really beautiful to know that she has
just come so far in such a short amount of time.
I remember turning up to physio that day and she said,
What do you want to work on today? And I said,
(02:36:24):
I really want her to crawl. She's going to be
two next week. I want to hit a crawl. And
we did not leave there until she crawled.
S3 (02:36:34):
Teacher, Daisy.
S4 (02:36:35):
Crowley. Come on.
S9 (02:36:37):
And he's crawling. She had tried and tried and tried
for almost the whole hour. At the very end. The
week before she turned to. It was the first time
she crawled. Big step up.
S3 (02:36:56):
Daisy. Walking up stairs.
S9 (02:36:58):
The big step up. Good job. If we didn't have
Vision Australia involved and disease therapies, I don't think she
would be where she is. To be honest with you,
they come to our house. They can see what our
set up is.
S4 (02:37:12):
One reindeer, you know. Put it on the tree. Well, awesome.
S9 (02:37:17):
Oh, my goodness. She's the most determined person she's getting there.
Everything Daisy does makes me proud.
S3 (02:37:26):
Daisy's walking with the cane.
S5 (02:37:28):
That is so moving. No wonder Mummy's proud.
S6 (02:37:31):
Yeah, It was beautiful. You're watching Vision Australia's Carols by Candlelight,
presented by Amy. And just say you can see how
powerful the work of Vision Australia.
S5 (02:37:40):
Vision Australia changes lives. And we've seen that in the
wonderful film Stories from Tonight. And with your help, they
can continue to light up the lives of Australian children
and their families, which Vision Australia supports. So donate now
give to KAOS dot com or you can call one
842 2077. All right.
S6 (02:37:58):
Now we have wanted to tell this story for so long,
but the timing just wasn't quite right.
S5 (02:38:04):
But tonight we get to share it with you and
this makes us so proud. It's truly a story of
humble beginnings.
S6 (02:38:10):
So our next singer, Ben Abraham, has been involved with
this night for 20 years as John Foreman's personal page turner,
which is a very important and a very well paid job.
Am I right?
S8 (02:38:22):
It does look like some have said it's the most
important job, because if I get anything wrong.
S4 (02:38:28):
The whole lot falls apart.
S6 (02:38:29):
Yeah. And, you know, John is a hard taskmaster. You're
also following in some very unique footsteps tonight because on
this night. Tell us a little bit about that.
S8 (02:38:37):
Well, tonight's especially exciting for me because in 1981, 41
years ago, my parents sang just behind me on this stage.
And they're here.
S4 (02:38:46):
Tonight. So I'm excited to be here.
S3 (02:38:50):
Look at the clip of his parents singing. And then
I them in the audience.
S6 (02:38:54):
They know they need that brand and different song. Different song,
different talk.
S5 (02:39:01):
Tonight, different another time, for instance. Till his own right, though,
having collaborated with international artists such as Kesha, Ben Platt
and Macklemore, his second album, Friendly Fire, was released back
in March, and he's touring across the US in July
and August.
S6 (02:39:15):
This time he's supported by John Foreman. Very important that
John does not mess this up. He has to reciprocate this. Well,
there's a tenner for the books. Please welcome the wonderful
Ben Abraham and the first Noel.
S3 (02:39:29):
Ben in the blue suit. John Foreman.
UU (02:39:31):
On. The table.
S4 (02:39:41):
Snow on the streets was to say. Shackles and fins
as they lay.
UU (02:40:00):
They keep me.
S4 (02:40:02):
Mercy. On a call.
UU (02:40:06):
Tuesday night the.
S4 (02:40:10):
So deep. Oh.
UU (02:40:15):
Oh, well, no. What is the key? I. Shiny.
S4 (02:40:49):
He.
UU (02:41:02):
So. See for. No. Warning. Good. Boy is the. Oh.
S8 (02:43:12):
Merry Christmas, everybody. Thank you very much.
S3 (02:43:17):
Tom Foreman smiles and.
S4 (02:43:18):
Pats parents back. John Boehner, you did it. And I
love the fact that you just kind of.
S6 (02:43:24):
You couldn't see it, but we could see it at
home that Ben's mom and dad were filming it on
their phone.
S4 (02:43:28):
And he saw his way there.
S6 (02:43:33):
We'll get them to talk. They'd be fine. We're just
it's such a great extended family. And look. Look at
Ben and Sarah. My Aussie is doing so well overseas.
It's so great to see. Thanks also to the Cows
by Candlelight choir. And a quick plug for John Foreman.
He's got the Australian Pop Orchestra's concert on New Year's
Eve at the Arts and it's going to go on.
S5 (02:43:51):
I was going to plug his new musical Midnight that's
premiering at the Comedy Theatre in June next year starring
Lucy Durack.
S6 (02:43:57):
Oh, did you have time to mention Bono?
S5 (02:43:59):
I don't think so.
S6 (02:44:00):
Oh, what a shame. Moving on now, Brooke. If they
get gold medals for everything in the world, what would
you get a gold medal for?
S5 (02:44:07):
Roast potatoes.
S6 (02:44:08):
The potatoes again? I can't believe this.
S5 (02:44:10):
Chicken nugget eating. I don't know what else.
S6 (02:44:13):
Next artist is a professional swimmer. Made his international swimming
debut at the Kong games earlier this year and received
a gold medal as part of the four by one
men's relay.
S5 (02:44:24):
So he's currently in training for the Paris Olympics 2024,
and in his other life as a singer, he's released
a brand new, self-titled album in April that.
S6 (02:44:35):
Offered this incredible performance of the national anthem at the
Melbourne Cup this year. Some wag on social media, right?
But if Cody Simpson isn't opening cows by candlelight this year,
our nation will have been wrong. Now we don't usually
answer for trolls, but he didn't kick us off tonight.
But you'll be glad to know that this is going
to be God performing the Christmas Song. Everyone, it's Cody Simpson.
S4 (02:45:13):
In a dark suit. It's roasting on an.
S3 (02:45:16):
Open watch at that time.
S4 (02:45:20):
Jack Frost nipping at you? No. Yuletide now being sung
by white. And folks dressed up like camo. Everybody knows Turkey.
(02:45:44):
Some years ago. How to make the season bright. Tiny
tots with their eyes. Mind it hard to sleep sooner.
(02:46:07):
They know that science is on his way. He is
lots of toys and goodies on today. And every mother's
child is gonna spy. To see if reindeer really know
(02:46:32):
how to fly. And so. I'm offering. Simple phrase. Two
kids from one. It's been said. Many times, many ways.
(02:46:56):
Merry Christmas to. Let's go. And every mother's child is
(02:47:20):
gonna spy to see if they knew it. Know. How
to fly.
UU (02:47:31):
So I'm all for it.
S4 (02:47:36):
For. His kids from one. Two. It's. All of the.
It's been said many times, many ways. Easy.
UU (02:47:53):
Merry Christmas. You. He was in the audience. Absolutely wonderful. Mary.
(02:48:15):
Could you see you light? Now, if you thought.
S6 (02:48:17):
That a swim, a swimmer.
S4 (02:48:19):
That sings.
S6 (02:48:20):
Is a bit different. Hold the phone.
S5 (02:48:21):
So Mitch Tambo is a frog, a military man who
blends traditional Aboriginal sounds and language with contemporary beats and production.
S6 (02:48:29):
So next year, Mitch will perform with the Wunderbar eulogy,
Burn the Floor Australian Tour. This is a groundbreaking mix
of Indigenous culture and music with the ballroom and Latin
dance styles that we know. Burn the Flow do really well.
That's premiering in July. But tonight we get to hear
his first ever holiday release.
S5 (02:48:51):
This is going to be incredible. You know, I'm especially
proud of Mitch because we are from the same country, right?
We're from Camilleri Country, right up in the north of
New South Wales. So it's very, very special for us
to be able to see that tonight.
S6 (02:49:05):
Yeah, absolutely.
S5 (02:49:06):
Do you have to teach you a word?
S6 (02:49:07):
Yes, a word.
S5 (02:49:08):
Yama. That means.
S6 (02:49:09):
Hello, Yama. Let's say Yama, everybody. Java.
S5 (02:49:13):
There you go. Yes. Bringing the Christmas and Camilleri spirits together.
Mitch Tambo with the Melbourne Gospel Choir and Silent Night.

S3 (02:50:15):

UU (02:50:33):
Young. I mean. Kind of a god. Give. Now one.
S3 (02:51:19):
He makes traditional dance steps.
S4 (02:51:25):

UU (02:51:28):

S3 (02:52:55):
He waves to the audience.
S7 (02:52:56):

from mine the happiest of Christmas. I intend to. Right? 2023.
S4 (02:53:04):

(03:01:27):
That is the best of Melbourne to run here tonight.
How special. Truly spectacular. But. Are you going to say
that now?
S6 (03:01:38):
Thank you so much, you guys. Just quickly, while we're
doing all of this up here, we did want to
mention Peter Davison, who passed away sadly, earlier this year.
And Peter was a longstanding member of the Karras family
as the associate musical director for many, many years. So
many of the beautiful carols that we have performed and
have arrangements here were created by Peter. He was a
(03:02:01):
beautiful musician. He will be missed. Ballet. Peter Davison.
S5 (03:02:05):
Very well said. Outstanding work.
UU (03:02:07):
Peter. All right, everybody. It's almost.
S6 (03:02:14):
Home time. Who is ready for one more great coward
by candlelight tradition?
UU (03:02:20):
Let me see. With. Hands up. Come on, let's go.
Do they want it? Do they want. Do you really
want to hear? Have? I don't know. I've loved it all.
Maybe we should just do the.
S6 (03:02:33):
Whole thing from the start with this guy. But I
don't think this. This is how you finish Christmas Eve
carols with David Hobson.
UU (03:02:46):
That is. Next year, David will be.
S6 (03:02:48):
Touring his concert with his long time friend Maureen Aprile,
and the two of US tour Darwin, Esperance, Barossa, Yamba,
you name it. They are like the Leyland Brothers of theatre.
But before we let them do that, we need to
hear him sing this one song. It's David Hobson. It's
time for the Holy City.
S2 (03:03:12):
Student in a bow tie.
S4 (03:03:13):
And a.
S2 (03:03:14):
Tuxedo.
S4 (03:03:16):
David Hobsbawm set the stage. Last night's high level sleeping
bag came a dream solved by ice in all Jerusalem
beside the temple. I heard the children singing under their eyes.
(03:03:38):
Then inside me thought the voice of angels from hiding
in on song right before.
UU (03:03:50):
So. And he's always strong.
S4 (03:03:55):
I mean, on the story.
UU (03:04:06):
Hong Kong. We all.
S2 (03:04:28):
Stage bathed in.
S4 (03:04:29):
Blue light. And then he thought my dream was changed.
The streets no longer. Riley must put longhorns on ice
for little children. So the song would dog with mystery.
The mall was closed and she knew as the shot.
UU (03:04:52):
Of Gone for All. Snowballs of All.
S4 (03:04:58):
They.
UU (03:05:03):
For more on. One of. Only. One. Wow.
S4 (03:05:54):
And once again, the scene was changed. You seem to be.
I saw the holy city inside to try to see
the light of God was on its feet. The gates
were open wide. My. I'm. Deemed.
UU (03:06:42):
It was you. Ja Rule. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
When he was born, you. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh.
(03:07:55):
Was on. Oh time. Thank you very, very much. And
(03:08:16):
a very merry Christmas. Thank you for having me. Please
be standing by. We have. How about the client and
the client? You're out of that dog in the fire.
S4 (03:08:29):
And the orchestra.
UU (03:08:30):
And for you, my friend. Merry Christmas. Thank you, David.
Thank you. To the Count by candlelight for all we
have done. Thank you all. And a big thank you
to my little elf buddy tonight. We had a good time.
I had so much fun.
S5 (03:08:43):
Thank you, DC And a big thank you to all
of our wonderful performers tonight for making Christmas Eve so memorable.
