Imagine you moved to a quiet part of the countryside, known for its beautiful blue gums, clear running waters and maybe vocal cockatoo or two, only to learn the drinking water coming for the seemingly pristine landscape around you had been contaminated with toxic chemicals for as much as 30 years.
That’s what happened in the Blue Mountains last year, when community members tested their drinking water for “PFAS” to discover that it contained this “forever chemical” at elevated levels.
If you caught the program last week, you would have heard the story of how a group of ordinary community members in Katoomba teamed up with journalists and independent scientists to uncover a contamination problem so severe it caused a dam to be taken out of drinking water supply and a NSW upper house inquiry to question how this could have gone unnoticed for so long.
If you didn’t hear last week's program, you can find it in the Water Watch podcast feed or online at waterwatchradio.com to catch up on What PFAS is, where it comes from and how it’s been a growing concern around the world and closer to home.
Today we are going to keep following this story, to hear from community members, who, after learning they had been drinking contaminated water, sought a blood test to see if this chemical was accumulating in their bodies.
