The Federal Government's intervention in Tasmania's Franklin Dam project in the 1980s, shows the Commonwealth can intervene in State and Territory affairs.

The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services and the Justice and Equity Centre want the Albanese Government to use those powers now to protect the rights of children.

They sought advice from barristers Kate Eastman SC and Emma Dunlop, who say the federal government can use "external affairs" power to enforce minimum standards throughout the states and territories.

Other Highlights:

  • Aboriginal drivers are getting pulled over by the police more - and facing harsher penalties than other motorists in the Northern Territory.
  • A flagpole has been at the centre of a disagreement between an Aboriginal community and Queensland Government workers.
  • A new album is revitalising an endangered Indigenous language through the power of children's music.
