Europa wil meer op eigen benen staan, en dat merken Nederlandse ondernemers ook. Bijvoorbeeld de start-up Spherical Systems, dat systemen maakt voor satellieten. Ze werken mee aan het Europese alternatief voor Starlink, het satellietsysteem van Elon Musk.
Oprichter Bastiaan Bom begon in de ruimtevaart, maar komt nu steeds meer in de defensie terecht. Want ook de ruimte is tegenwoordig het toneel van de geopolitieke strijd. De Russen doen er alles aan om westerse satellieten te saboteren. Met Spherical Systems maakt Bastiaan Bom een systeem dat tussen de zonnepanelen en de stroomverbruiker in de satelliet in zit. Een soort omvormer dus.
Eén van hun klanten is een Frans defensiebedrijf, en dat is geen toeval, zegt Gerald Baal van Transfer.LC. Want de Franse defensie-industrie is booming, zeker nu president Macron zo het voortouw neemt op het Europese toneel.
