Hoe kun je groot worden met iets kleins als een coating voor een zaadje? De Delftse startup Carapace Biopolymers laat zien dat het kan. Hun biologisch afbreekbare zaadcoating beschermt zaden tegen invloeden van buitenaf en biedt extra voeding. Deze duurzame innovatie lijkt op het precisiewerk uit de chipindustrie, zoals bij techreuzen NXP en ASML.
CEO Marouschka Blahetek is net terug uit de Verenigde Staten en ziet grote verschillen in hoe startups daar worden benaderd. Waar in Nederland vaak op risico’s wordt gefocust, kijkt men in de VS vooral naar kansen. Hans Biesheuvel, oud-voorzitter van Ondernemend Nederland, beaamt dat: 'We moeten startups beter ondersteunen zodat ze kunnen doorgroeien tot scale-ups. Maar het Nederlandse ondernemersklimaat staat onder druk.'
Canada kijkt meer naar Europa
Misschien kunnen de Canadezen daarbij helpen, want die hebben de blik veel nadrukkelijker op Europa gericht sinds Donald Trump ze met handelstarieven om de oren heeft gesmeten. Dat ziet ook Gerald Baal van Transfer.LC op de Viva Technology beurs in Parijs. Het Canadese paviljoen is daar twee keer zo groot als vorig jaar, en bedrijven uit Canada zijn nadrukkelijk op zoek naar Europese bedrijven om zaken mee te doen.
