Tijdens het staatsbezoek van koning Willem-Alexander en koningin Maxima aan Kenia wordt niet alleen het Nederlandse volkslied gespeeld, er worden ook zaken gedaan. Er zijn zo'n vijftig bedrijven mee, vooral op het gebied van water en tuinbouw. Thomas Grosfeld, hoofd economie en internationale betrekkingen van VNO-NCW, was ook mee en schetst in Wereldspelers het belang van Kenia.
'Wij zijn de 5e investeerder in Kenia', zegt hij. 'En Nederland is voor Kenia dan weer de eerste exportmarkt in Europa. Er zijn ruim 150 Nederlandse bedrijven actief in Kenia. Het is de gateway naar Oost-Afrika. Dat is niet alleen economisch, maar ook geopolitiek van groot belang.'
Anti-cyclisch ondernemen
In de studio is Geesje Mosies. Zij is in 2008 in Portugal begonnen met Hoooked, een bedrijf dat haakgaren maakt uit textielafval. Geen logisch moment om te beginnen, want Zuid-Europa werd destijds hard getroffen door de financiële crisis. Maar voor een bedrijf als Hoooked werkte dat juist, want het bleek anti-cyclisch. Als het slecht gaat met de economie, gaan mensen juist meer thuis hobbyen.
Naast Hoooked begeleidt Geesje Mosies ondernemers naar Portugal en andersom, en is ze actief als angel investor. Als internationaal ondernemer heeft ze geleerd om je bewust te zijn van andere culturen.
