Speaker 1 (00:00):
WESN.

Speaker 2 (00:00):
Walker Sports Radio ninety two to seven WFNZ. We are
live from Curry Arena. Queen's hosting Hornets Media Day. I
can't believe season's already here. It feels weird, but it's true.
Just talk to Charles Lee. And there's Brandon Miller who
gave Charles Lee the wrap up signal before we were
ready to go, Like, you can spend a little bit
more time with us than that, right, Like you can, Okay.

Speaker 3 (00:21):
I was just waiting my turn, So yeah, I really
should have went before because you wanted to talk to
it so bad. And I respect that and I appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
Brandon Miller, going into his third year of his NBA career,
I want to ask the annoying questions real quickly, just
to get it out of the way. Risk, how are
you doing man like? And are you are you expecting
to be one hundred percent by the time the season starts?

Speaker 1 (00:42):
Just overall, how's the risk?

Speaker 3 (00:43):
Oh I'm feeling a hundred now good. I think it's
it's doing a lot better. It's responding, you know, really good.
This summers spent a long summer just you know, working
on left hand and just trying to get my risk
back stronger to how it was. So I just feel
like all that plays a part in this season and
how it's going to feel. And I think right now
it's feeling great.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
Well.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
Another thing I don't think people realize is how tough
rehab is through injuries. Well, because West towards Achilles, he
played college football tour your Achilles. My girlfriend played pickleball
and tore her achilles. So we're talking.

Speaker 4 (01:15):
I got stories.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
Then for everybody's got pickleball star pick, it's got to
be in your contract.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
You can't play pickleball.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
I don't know if anybody's taking suggestions, but it's crazy
to go through the kind of rehab you had an
injury that took you out for the entire season. What
do you think people don't understand about the rehab process
that you specifically went through with your risk injury.

Speaker 3 (01:34):
I think just I think the specific is just I
think the mindset part. I feel like you can get
you down on yourself because you're not playing, of course,
with your guys, doing the things you love to do,
and you're just kind of out there watching everything, and
I you know, you feel like you can't contribute to
help your teammates to you know, win basketball games. But
you know, I think I just kind of, you know,

(01:55):
found ways to contribute with my team and you know,
help out as much as I can. I think you know,
you've seen me doing left hand passing before the games
with you know, Todd Gibson. You know, I would just
watch film with a you know, all my teammates, just
kind of help everybody being in the right places, you know.
Just coming into my third year, this leadership role, I

(02:15):
think it's kind of I think it kind of plays
a big part with me and last year. I think
last year is good for me just you know, just
to sit down and actually see the game a little
bit more. And I think it's gonna help us in.

Speaker 4 (02:27):
The long run.

Speaker 5 (02:27):
Yeah, because I was gonna ask you, did that time
off teach you more about being a pro and staying
locked in? What were some of the biggest things that
you were able to gain from a positive perspective?

Speaker 3 (02:37):
Uh, just learning everybody, learning everybody even more as far
as players, staff, coaches. I think that's that's kind of
like the main thing with me is just building up
those bonds you know that we can you know, all
trust each other and you'll all go to war for
each other and just you know, being those late tough
situations that I could just always lean on somebody. So

(02:57):
I think that's kind of one thing I did with
you know last year, just building building bonds stronger than ever.

Speaker 5 (03:03):
What was your off season focus from year two to
year three? Because you go through your rookie year, then
you got stuff you want to pick up there until
now going into your third season, what's the off season
been like for you?

Speaker 4 (03:13):
Uh, you know, it was a long off season.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
You know it started kind of early, but I think
just having that start so early to the offseason, I
kind of you know, you know, it can affect you,
it can also build you. I think it kind of
build who I am today as far as mentally, mentally stronger,
physically stronger, and just you know, back with better conf

(03:36):
with you know, higher confidence than I did last year,
and just coming out there with the most confidence trying
to win every game.

Speaker 2 (03:41):
All right, So now I'm gonna ask some fun stuff.
You said you got to know your teammates a little bit.
I know Charles Lee has told the story a couple
of times about you watching film with Nick Smith Junior,
starting to take on a leadership rolling now you might
understand the coaching aspect a little better than what you
did previously. Let's go through just rapid fire. Some of
the players on the team tell us something that most
people don't know about them. You go with that, LaMelo Ball,
what's something that most people don't know about.

Speaker 3 (04:02):
Everybody's gonna say six seven LaMelo Ball. I think LaMelo
Ball is a six to eight guard.

Speaker 1 (04:08):
So he's taller than what he's I think.

Speaker 3 (04:10):
He's taller than what he's listed at. I think he's
been in the weight room all summer. I think he's
had a great summer this summer. That's gonna that's gonna show,
of course, and I think he's gonna continue to be
you know who he is and just continue to be great.

Speaker 2 (04:24):
What's something about con Kinnepple that people don't know about?

Speaker 4 (04:27):
Uh? Conkin his nickname is K two. Uh. He's gonna
shoot everything, catch and shoot.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
You.

Speaker 4 (04:36):
No.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
No, that's my dog man, my rook you know, he's
he's coming here with the most confidences as a rookie.
I think that's you know, good for our team. You know,
like some rookies kind of shy away from the moment.
I think he's kind of one of those rookies that's gonna,
you know, live in that moment and just you know,
work as hard as he can to help everybody out well.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
And we can come back to that in the moment.
But you said your rook Did you mean that like
you're taking on a mentorship rover the all?

Speaker 3 (05:03):
Okay, I just learned. I just learned to be clear.
Oh I won't got no rooks in here right now.
We got Liam, you.

Speaker 5 (05:07):
Got you got plenty of the team breand now I
was gonna ask you where are you and Lamela like
as a tandem because you guys are the franchise cornerstones.
Do you two talk about taking over and things like that?
What's the off season been like for YouTube?

Speaker 3 (05:20):
Definitely, you know, I think we kind of obserted our
roles and our leadership to the team and kind of
just accepted who who we are. I think he's gonna
you know, be more of a leader this year as
far as vocally, and I think he's been doing a
great job with that this summer, just as far as
communicating with everybody, not just the players, but coaches, you know, staff.

Speaker 4 (05:43):
You know, it could be everybody. So I think just.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
Him, him inserting himself from you know, our regular to
to you know, different from everybody else.

Speaker 4 (05:51):
I think that's gonna be great for him.

Speaker 5 (05:52):
Do you guys just walk around this off season and
you guys are just giddy because you're like, man, if
we can just stay healthy, we're gonna be a real
problem for these hats out here.

Speaker 3 (06:00):
Well, I think that's I think, you know, that's always
been the problem is just health. So we're just trying
to try not to you know, stay keep saying the
same thing as health, health. So I think we're just
gonna kind of, you know, worry about our actions. But
that's what we've been talking about is just you know,
our actions more than speaks, louder than words. So I
think just how we take care of our body, recovery,

(06:24):
what we put into our body. I think that's you know,
it's all gonna change. You know, you gotta have you're
gonna have to make sacrifices. So I think those are
the sacrifice that we've made is just you know, create
better professional habits.

Speaker 5 (06:35):
Yeah, how motivating was it seeing some of the younger
teams in the league now taking those steps up, seeing
what Indiana did and seeing what some of the other
teams did, you guys really look at that and say, hey,
that could be us.

Speaker 3 (06:44):
Definitely just watching the playoffs, you know, we watch them together,
me mellow Miles, you know, just talk about them like that.
As far as just you know, if they can do it,
we can do it. We played every team in the NBA.
We were capable of beating any team in the NBA.
So I feel like, you know, how come we can't
be right there? So you know, it's just have to,
you know, ask ourself those type of questions. Have sit

(07:06):
down and have those hard conversations, and I think they're
gonna better us.

Speaker 2 (07:10):
Can I ask you what I think the most annoying
question is to you now, because at first, at first
you said it's probably the rest. I feel like you
get annoyed when people ask about your mid range shot.

Speaker 1 (07:20):
Is that fair?

Speaker 4 (07:20):
I've only had that once.

Speaker 2 (07:22):
Oh just today though, because I feel like you've answered
that before though all that, I don't want to make
it annoying If it's not, it just feels like it
because it does seem you did do a lot of
work in the mid range game your rookie season. Charles
Lee talked about changing your shot profile. You did just
like straight up you were throwing up threes all over
the place, man, making a decent percentage of them. So
if it's not annoying, then what other things are you

(07:44):
looking to change within your shot profile?

Speaker 1 (07:47):
Or do you kind of want a carbon coffee what
you did last year?

Speaker 3 (07:49):
Uh, you know it's gonna be a little bit like
last year, but you know, I eventually get back to
the mid range. I think just right now, I'm kind
of taking what the defense gives to me. Where this
open three open may range or a past to my
guy Miles Bridges or a lob know, anything like that
just you know got to be you know, consistent with

(08:09):
with with our play and just you know build.

Speaker 4 (08:12):
Off of that.

Speaker 2 (08:13):
As Hornets fans, we were excited about the offseason you
guys went through from a player standpoint.

Speaker 1 (08:17):
You see them get.

Speaker 2 (08:18):
Your alma mater brother and Colin Sexton, which is pretty
cool bringing back train man. I think this team is
fun as hell. Man, Like you guys got a ton
of guards. It feels like you guys are gonna change
and become a lot faster. You're great in transition out
in the open court, when you see Jeff Peterson going
to work the way he is. Same thing with Charles
having an influence in the background. What's your reaction when
you see the shams bombs Colin is coming.

Speaker 3 (08:41):
Yeah, definitely exciting, you know, just to see all these
these new pieces, new faces just to contribute with us.
I think, you know, I can't be more excited than that.
I know we're gonna have some some great teammates, some
great vets. You know, they're gonna help us get to
what we what we what we need, what we want.

Speaker 1 (08:59):
And what has that done for practice?

Speaker 4 (09:00):
Man?

Speaker 1 (09:00):
I'm sure practice is.

Speaker 2 (09:06):
It?

Speaker 1 (09:06):
Colin bat No.

Speaker 3 (09:08):
I love Collin and deaf, but I just you know,
one thing about calling his motor is always gonna be high.
You know, every day he walks in the facility, every
day he walks in the building, he's gonna have a
smile on his face talking to everybody, and then he's gonna,
you know, once he stepping the lines, it's all business.

Speaker 4 (09:23):
It's gonna be no high motor Colin.

Speaker 3 (09:26):
And you know, I think that's one thing fans won't
have to worry about Colin is his motor.

Speaker 1 (09:30):
Brandon. Where we're at man Ba I'm gonna going to
the playoffs.

Speaker 4 (09:32):
You got big you've seen it they be they be.

Speaker 1 (09:35):
Georgia's went on the road and got a big one.

Speaker 4 (09:37):
Man. That's that's me.

Speaker 1 (09:38):
It's a swagger all the way to the swagger all
the way back.

Speaker 4 (09:41):
The swagger will be back if saving comes out of retirement.

Speaker 5 (09:45):
Okay, what about basketball Final four championship this year with you?

Speaker 1 (09:49):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (09:49):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (09:51):
Success, he said yeah. On the radio, he said yeah.
And we'll leave it at that.

Speaker 2 (09:58):
It's Brandon Miller, joyed to gets here, West and Walker
Sports Traded ninety two seven w f n Z.

Speaker 1 (10:03):
All Right, man, that one's too bad, right, we'll get
you out here. We appreciate that.

Speaker 2 (10:07):
Always always great having a conversation with Brandon Miller. He's
a friend of the show. That we can say that well,
Mark Mark used to be. Yeah, they got rid of
a friend of the show. So now Brandon, are you
because like the third fourth time, we think so, Yeah,
I think he's taking the responsibility.

Speaker 1 (10:24):
You heard it, We got it on tape.

Speaker 5 (10:25):
My daughter would be back at camp next year, still
wearing his camp gear around the house.

Speaker 1 (10:31):
All right, thanks the time, Brandon, I appreciate it.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
