Speaker 1 (00:00):
You were listening to the Wes and Walker show, this
is another box. Goodness, gracious, it's Wes. Oh, it's multiple.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
We got a little soccer balls, we got rugby balls,
we got the basketball and Walker. These guys are happy
stuffed balls is what they are. Only on Sports Radio
ninety two point seven FM WFNZ.
Speaker 1 (00:22):
Good Lord, n a drop.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
One more hour to go on Wes and Walker Sports
Radio ninety two to seven WFNZ. If you were listening
to the last segment, then you understand what it's like
to be in Smoke's presence and be in the presence
of greatness because I was describing it during the commercial break.
Smoke has a filing cabinet system in his brain that
(00:57):
he can go to immediately when you ask him anything
about NASCAR or Carolina Panthers football. The recall is remarkable.
I would say more so for NASCAR than Panthers football,
but you just heard the tangent Smoke went on when
referencing Carolina Panthers football. The recall is second to none.
There imagine it being better for a specific sport. It's
(01:20):
like SpongeBob. When SpongeBob forgets about everything except for fine
dining and breathing smoke? Have you forgotten everything outside of Panthers,
football and NASCAR and breathing?
Speaker 1 (01:34):
Are those the only three things that are in your brain?
Speaker 3 (01:39):
There?
Speaker 1 (01:39):
You go, Okay, thank you, I'm glad. Breathing is there
just following death?
Speaker 2 (01:43):
I think that's the crazy part is you people don't
know this, but you just went down a Wikipedia sheet
in your brain discussing JK.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
Simmons.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
That's right, you had a whole sheet of factoids in
your brain about JK. Simmons when we were discussing all
I don't even know what movie were we talking about.
I forget oh after reading Burn, after reading It's unreal, man,
it's unreal. All right, great movie, by the way, it
is very good movie. Okay, we move on. Wes Bryant,
one half of the show, WESN. Walker on Sports Rady
(02:16):
ninety two seven WFNZ. He's joining us, not yet from
the sidelines over there in Raleigh, but he soon will
be on the sidelines for NC State Virginia Tech on
c W West.
Speaker 1 (02:27):
Thanks for the time, man, How are you doing.
Speaker 4 (02:32):
Down here in Raleigh tomorrow night. I don't think it
will be the case as far as it being a
beautiful evening, So we're trying to soak up the good
weather while we can. Because you know, while I have
my feelings for NC State, I must say, man, it
is one of the more underrated stadiums I feel like
in the South. Uh, just very picturesque. Every time I
(02:52):
would play the college football game, I always enjoy playing
at NC State. So yeah, man, I answer your question,
it is going pretty well, right man.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
Yeah, what makes it so underrated?
Speaker 2 (03:03):
How much of it is the crowd, the rackous crowd
that pulls for the wolf Pack. How much of it
is I guess the scenery, Like what makes it so good?
Speaker 4 (03:12):
The optics of it. I think it's a very pretty
state and and I think when you play there in
the daytime, like they've got great grass and all the
you know, the renovations and stuff that they've done over
the years. I just think it's a very nice station.
I will probably call it mid size. To me, it's
one of the better mid size stadiums in college football.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
Wes Bryant finally remembering some of his days playing NC State,
because that's still the biggest upset that you pulled off
playing at Wake Forest, right was beating Philip Rivers and Company.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (03:42):
Man, they thought they could come in and rest their guys,
you know, for Ohio State, and the little old Deeks
wasn't gonna have anything for him, but we had plenty
for him, and they left hanging their heads with a nail.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
All right. I love it. I love hearing that story.
I'm sure Flounder likes hearing that story as well. When
you talk about beating up on end. Wes Bryant joining
us on his own show, WESN Walker Sports Trading ninety
two seven WFNZ Wes, we were doing a pick um
segment earlier and we pretty much skated by this one.
Virginia Tech they have a shot for sure, like NC
(04:14):
State exists for a reason. NC State's defense has not
been very good. But it just feels like everything is
down with Virginia Tech, especially after firing Brent Prye. What's
the mood like with Virginia Tech. I know you talked
to some of the coaches yesterday or the players, if
I'm not mistaken, what's the mood like with Virginia Tech
after everything they've gone through so far this year?
Speaker 4 (04:36):
Well, for these guys, they feel like this is their
opportunity to show that, hey, what I did, and that
was kind of the messaging that I got from them
as that they still feel like they have a lot
to play for and they still, you know, feel like
that This week was kind of the jump Star Tour
because Kelvin Gilliam once Brent Pryor with fire defensive tackle.
Kelvin Gilliam got up in their meeting and he said,
(05:00):
you know, whoever wants to be here staying here, whoever
wants to leave, they need to leave, like right now.
And they had one of those moments to figure out
who wanted to be here. And I got to talk
to him and he said, man, you know, we just
needed to find out who wants to be here and
who doesn't. And he also told me that you know
when they did beat Wafford that they said, you know,
this is cool that everybody's celebrating and happy that we
(05:21):
beat Watford, but we should have been celebrating this way
after playing some of the previous opponents that we had.
So this is a team that I feel like right now,
it feels like that their season is just beginning, and
so that's what makes them a dangerous proponent for the
NC State Wolfpack. NC State's coming off the loss of
their own as we know, and funny story for you guys,
they've done. Definitely had a problem with the color of
(05:45):
my ACC shirt that I wore, even though it is neutral,
even though it is ACC you know gear. He said,
what the bleep are you wearing that color shirt for?
Because they've done that's my man. But he said, what's
the bleeper you wearing that shirt for? Because it is
the color of the Duke Blue Devils with whom they
lost to Lands. So that's something interesting for you to
(06:06):
have that. He was really upset about it. I could
tell he was kind of upset about it, but you know,
I'm one of his guys, so we got past it.
But other than that, like I said, I think this
should be an interesting game. Neither team has great defenses,
you know, when you look at what both have been
able to do this year. I think it could be
one of those deals where m C State gets just
(06:26):
enough stops to be able to get this thing done.
But for State, they've got to take care of football.
Four turnovers last week. That's not going to do it.
Because if they do that against this Virginia Tech team,
then that's going to give them life, and I don't
know that they want to do that. Not to mention,
as I said, the weather tomorrow, it's expected to be
quite a messy affair. So this could have a lot
(06:46):
of elements to it that could make this game very,
very intriguing.
Speaker 2 (06:52):
When our guy Brian shadowed with us earlier in the week,
he was giving us the top ACC performers, and he
decided to stick with the qbs, which you also go
with in your ACCQB Power rankings. But we wanted to
talk a little bit more about some of the better
ac ACC performers outside of quarterback. Hollywood Smothers is a
guy that you brought up. I would say, well, okay,
(07:13):
you have a good quarterback in NC State with CJ. Bailey,
But how's their running game in a game that might
be a bad weather contest?
Speaker 1 (07:22):
Pretty good?
Speaker 2 (07:22):
With Hollywood Smothers being an awesome running back, how much
of a factor do you expect him to be, not
only against Virginia Tech, but onward.
Speaker 4 (07:30):
I expect him to be a huge factor. He's top
five in the nation in rushing yards. He's one of
the best all purpose backs in the league. He is
second I believe on NC State in receptions he's got fifteen.
But regardless to that, as far as the rushing is concerned,
he's top five in all of college football right now.
And when you listen to the coaches just describe his play,
(07:50):
they talk about how the fact he's not a big kid,
he's not physically imposing, but he's very physical, he's very shifty,
he's got a great running style that's really been a
problem for opponents, and so he certainly is the bell cow.
He makes this offense more explosive, and you started to
see that come to life at the end of last
year when you couple CJ. Bailey and his passing ability
(08:14):
and how explosive they've been there with Hollywood smothers in
the background, and also what he can do out of
the backfield catching the football with Justin Joe Lee. Yeah,
this is NC States, I would say one of the
better offenses that they've had as far as just sheer
talent and what they've been doing out there. So Coach
Dooring just talked about the fact that they cannot turn
over the ball, and he talked about how defensively they're
(08:36):
taking less chances this year because he feels so confident
and what this offense can do. He's like, man, why
would we blitch as much as we have in the
past when we have an offense that can put points
on the board. And so we want to you know,
we want to make teams earn their points against us,
because we're going to put up points against them.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
All right, Wes looking elsewhere on the acc slate this weekend,
Let's go to your alma mater wake for or As
hosting Georgia Tech. How much of a shot do you
give the demon Deacons against the rambling Rack?
Speaker 5 (09:06):
Uh?
Speaker 4 (09:06):
Yeah, wealk? I like how you like to, you know,
try to you know, passify me and ask me how
much of a shot do I give up? And I
know it's not malicious? Oh, you know, good? And well,
we got no shot against Georgia Tech. Okay with quarterback?
Uh with Rodby after that quarterback? Okay, it's gonna be
tough sled. And also we had a tough time stopping
(09:27):
Hollywood to others the last time we were on a
football field. I know they've had a bye week, so
you know, who knows what work could have been done there.
But we have a hard time stopping to run. We
have a hard time stopping to pass. And also, like
I said, I just feel like our passed the game
is very limited to when you talk about this Georgia
Tech team that's very balanced. Jamal Haynes Singleton, Haines King.
I just feel like the way they're not going to
(09:49):
have enough answers this week program their year or two
away from getting to where they can, you know, be
respectable so to speak, just because Dick is gonna need
some more time to get some more talent. So I
don't see it this week.
Speaker 2 (10:04):
I find them to be very respectable. I respect them.
I did not mean to infantilize them. You know what
it really is for though, it's the way that you
were talking about Charlotte during Charlotte Monmouth week.
Speaker 1 (10:15):
It was like, yeah, you.
Speaker 2 (10:16):
Know, you did a lot of the and that's never
a good sign. I know exactly how you feel when
you give me that sound defect.
Speaker 4 (10:24):
You got to get the sizzle, when you got to
get the sizzle through your teeth, it's not gonna be
you know, promising.
Speaker 2 (10:30):
I did not give you sizzle Fire Sizzle. New segment
on westn Walker World debut next week, Final one. Here
we'll do a ball and or fallen designation for this game,
Syracuse hosting Duke. They're without their starting quarterback because the injury. Uh,
ballin or fallen, We'll get We'll go with Duke, We'll
go to the local team. Do you think they're going
to be a balling as a four and a half
point favorite?
Speaker 4 (10:52):
Man with the performance they had last week? Offensively, they
looked really good. This is a scene that's still Defensively,
you know, they can get up some points. They hit
a lot of explosive plays against them. I believe coach
doorings that they had eleven last week. It's suposed to
plays plays of ten yards or more. But I still
think that Duke is a team that they should be
(11:13):
able to get the job done though Steven Jelly and
again at Clemson, Clemson victory just doesn't mean what it
did even last year. And so for Syracuse, yeah, they
went in there and they got the job done, and
they did exactly what they were supposed to do. But
at the end of the day, when we really break
it down, they'd beat a struggling Clemson team, So we
can't put too much into that. And so I feel
(11:35):
like that with Angelly going for the year. I see
Duke getting it done in this game. I think Duke
will be balling.
Speaker 1 (11:43):
All right, there you go, Wes Bryant Royal blue shirt
and all right here on his own shows and Walker not.
Speaker 4 (11:50):
A favorite of Dave Dorn.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
You said he was really mad. There's no way he
could have been real mad here, like how serious was?
Speaker 4 (11:56):
I could telling his demeanor. I could tell in his
demeanor after, you know, because he said something to me
at first when they were leaving practice because I got
to go out and watch the walk through, and then
he said that's when he first said the comment, and
he kind of smiled and was kind of laughing about
it when he said it. Then when he came into
the room for us to talk uh you know, talk shop,
I could tell, you know, he kind of reiterated that,
(12:18):
and then just his demeanor, he just looked like he
wasn't too thrill. But I'm telling him, I said, look,
because we share a hatred for uh North Carolina. And
I also said that you beat up on my demon
des last week's uh you know so where even a
couple of weeks ago.
Speaker 2 (12:33):
Well also just say, hey, you don't want me to
wear this, then get me a red ACC shirt and
if you don't have one, right, then this is what
then he would have.
Speaker 4 (12:42):
Said, if he would have said for me to get
an NC State shirt. I don't know if I could
have been a part of the meeting, man, because I
don't have the hatred for NC State that I have
for some other teams except when Waite plays them. But
I don't know if I can. You know, Clemson is
the only ACC team that you know I could I
could wear besides my own Demon Deacons.
Speaker 2 (13:01):
Yeah, that's because of what you did with college football
twenty five with the Tigers, right.
Speaker 4 (13:06):
Yeah, man, you know they beat us fifty. It's surprising
as petty as I could be that I am as
affectionate as I answer with Clemson being a day beating
a fifteen straight time.
Speaker 1 (13:18):
Yeah, maybe I'm.
Speaker 2 (13:19):
Just never too good, you know, never too good. That's
that's a sizzle game. When Clemson and Wake Forest played,
all right, Wes Bryant on the sideline this weekend for
NC State Virginia Tech check them out on the CW Wes,
we appreciate it as always been good luck.
Speaker 1 (13:34):
On the call.
Speaker 4 (13:35):
Thank you guy, Thank you.
Speaker 2 (13:36):
Absolutely the one and only Wes Bryan Smoke, I do
have a question for you as soon as you're done
just hanging up with Wes. Do you still say good
luck on the call to a sideline reporter? What do
you say to a sideline reporter for good luck on
the broadcast?
Speaker 1 (13:51):
Uh? I think good luck's fair because well.
Speaker 2 (13:53):
Good luck on the call is what I'm saying, Like,
because it's not necessarily a call for them, Do I
say that good luck on the sideline?
Speaker 1 (13:59):
Is that? I think call simpler?
Speaker 5 (14:01):
Like you get the point, and plus you don't want
Wes Bryant to go like that one that one broadcast
dur on that Monday night football broadcast when he said,
vance Joseph is having the time of his life, having.
Speaker 1 (14:13):
The time of his life.
Speaker 5 (14:17):
Because I remember watching that live, I'm like, what were
they thinking having him on the sidelines?
Speaker 2 (14:23):
It was endearing though, Man, it was an endearing moment.
I think most people were on board after a while,
but in real time it was Oh no, probably gave
him a sizzle sound effact.
Speaker 5 (14:34):
You already had a weird pairing of Beth Mallin's and
Rex Ryan.
Speaker 2 (14:37):
Yes, that was a double header. That was the second
out of a double header that Night Guy. Was that
twenty seventeen eighteen?
Speaker 5 (14:42):
I think twenty seventeen and it was just awkward. Sergio dip, Oh, yeah,
we got here. G o.
Speaker 2 (14:48):
Hey, how about that recall smoke Sergio dip. Let it
go back into buy filing cabinets.
Speaker 5 (14:54):
The first broadcast Rex Ryan did, and all the jokes
were Rex Ryan's doing a color commentator and he's doing
it with a woman after we already knew one of
his Yeah thingstead.
Speaker 2 (15:05):
He likes that's true. I will say he did put
his foot in that broadcast, no doubt about it.
Speaker 1 (15:09):
It's WESN.
Speaker 2 (15:09):
Walker Sports Radio ninety two to seven WFNZ Live Wire
with Smoke coming up next WESN Walker Sports Radio ninety
two to seven, WFNZ. Just a couple more segments to
(15:31):
go on The Walker and Smoke Show. The Smoke Show
needs to be something, man. I want The Smoke Show
to exist somehow, some way, like as a podcast, just
because I love the title of it.
Speaker 5 (15:41):
It did in the mid two thousands. That was Tony
Stewart's Sirius XM Show.
Speaker 1 (15:44):
Is that right? Yeah? Move over, Tony Stewart.
Speaker 5 (15:47):
Well, that's why I called it into the Smoke I
couldn't use the smoke show because you.
Speaker 2 (15:50):
Know, into the smoke's pretty good. Did you think about
into the smoke or out of the smoke?
Speaker 4 (15:54):
No?
Speaker 5 (15:54):
That was actually my uncle that brought that one up
as an idea while we were at the beach.
Speaker 1 (15:58):
Did you like it?
Speaker 2 (15:59):
I was like, good, okay, what's better going into the
smoke or coming out of the smoke. Out of the
smoke means like you escaped, you're here. Into the smoke
means you're ready for the smoke. Though, what about ready
for the smoke? It's good, but not as the best
for a NASCAR title. Yeah, I guess that's true. All
the smoke that's already taken as well. Yeah, into the
(16:19):
smoke solid. Maybe just don't change it and we forget
we had this conversation. Maybe we do that. West and
Walker Sports Radio ninety two to seven WFNZ. Catch In
to the Smoke on WFNZ dot com in anywhere do
you get your podcast ky Kyle Bailey feed?
Speaker 6 (16:34):
Oh?
Speaker 5 (16:34):
Yeah, and you know, of course right now to playoffs
potentially for the last time going on right now?
Speaker 1 (16:40):
You know what I do?
Speaker 2 (16:41):
Look, I obviously don't know a ton about NASCAR anymore.
I used to be a huge fan. I would say
I do have thoughts on the playoff thing, where it
has always seemed pretty damn obvious to me that the
playoff format does not work.
Speaker 5 (16:57):
In the way that we use it, this one specifically,
Like I've always said, I wouldn't love it, but I
could compromise and bring back the original chase. What it
was just ten drivers for ten races, but sixteen drivers
these rounds. I mean it just it really it's confusing
for a lot of casual fans, and a lot of
(17:19):
the old heads and purists like myself hate it.
Speaker 2 (17:22):
What's the perfect scenario for you then, because I know
you said you would compromise and go back to the
original chase, But to me, being an outsider, again, you
should listen to Smoke on all things Nascar, not Walker Mail.
But in my opinion, what I would like to do
is to see NASCAR have everybody involved pretty much from
the beginning to the end with the simple points system,
and it still plays out with the most accomplished driver
(17:46):
for the most part. I know that they wanted to
value victories like actual first place finishes to some degree.
Speaker 5 (17:51):
Points on victories, that's all you need to do say
it one more time. Just need to put more points
on victories all you need to do. It seems like
the the gap between winning and lose finishishing second, depending
on how many laps you led, could only get you
about to fifteen points twenty points more. Just put more
points if you win, Put like forty fifty more points
on if you win.
Speaker 1 (18:09):
Then I think that solves that problem.
Speaker 2 (18:11):
Do you think it would be that simple when they're
trying to figure out a new format?
Speaker 1 (18:15):
Should be? It never is though, Huh.
Speaker 2 (18:18):
They always gotta have Yeah, the dumbest ever all commissioners. Though,
it's almost like an obligation for commissioners. It's to figure
out a way to make things as complicated as possible
and then to go with that format. Bag of doughnuts.
I do want to bring that conversation up just one
more time. Holy smoke, there needs to be some kind
of segment. I maybe maybe we're playing a little too
(18:41):
or flying a little too close to the sun on
that one, but I do like Holy smokes.
Speaker 1 (18:45):
I do like that.
Speaker 2 (18:46):
All right, you're ready for the live wire, you got
some sound, let's hit me all right? For the first
time ever, I believe smoke will be hosting the Live
Wire on weston Walker hit him.
Speaker 7 (18:59):
In the West in the web.
Speaker 1 (19:00):
Of clouded Down, South Down Live Wise once you got smoky.
Speaker 5 (19:04):
All right, well we start the first couple of cuts.
Are going to be talking about some beef specifically. First
we'll go down to the three to Zho five in
South Beach where the Dolphins are damn near on def
Con one.
Speaker 1 (19:16):
Right now, dare zero to three.
Speaker 5 (19:18):
Mike McDaniel is firmly on the hot seat, and two
has not been awful, but he's not been great, so
much so that he's been receiving some criticism for his play.
One of those people that's been criticizing him has been
Cameron Jarrell Newton, and yesterday Ta Tagovailo was asked about
Cam Newton's criticism of his play so far in twenty
twenty five, and I'll be honest, he gave a baffling answer.
Speaker 8 (19:42):
Anybody can play quarterback in this league, then, I mean,
I want to see anybody on the streets come and
play quarterback. I mean, Cam, Cam's doing his thing, for sure,
but you know, to it's I think it's easier to
be able to hold a clicker and talk about it
that way, or talk about what someone else is doing
wrong when you're you're not going out and having to
(20:03):
do the same as them, Right, So I think it's
it's it's all. It's easy to do that. I think
anybody can do that. I don't think anybody can play quarterback.
Speaker 5 (20:13):
So Walker, I'm just going to ask you simply, Yeah,
what the hell was he talking about?
Speaker 2 (20:18):
My favorite tweet on this is John Rich who quote tweeted, yeah,
Cam Newton, let's see you try to play quarterback in
the NFL. We're all thinking it. My question is what
do you think media members in front of Tua are
thinking as he's saying that. There's one specifically Marcel Luis shuck, Yeah,
who was here in Carolina during the back end of
(20:38):
Cam's run.
Speaker 1 (20:39):
It's like, what do.
Speaker 2 (20:42):
You guys know? Charlotte exists? Right, you guys know the
Panthers exist. You know, he won an MVP, something Tua
has not.
Speaker 5 (20:49):
Now I wasn't hang on He's won a playoff game,
something that Tua hasn't done.
Speaker 1 (20:53):
Yeah, that's true.
Speaker 2 (20:54):
And I guess there was the year where Tua went
forward like what how many year yards was? It was
a forty seven hundred and something ridiculous.
Speaker 5 (21:01):
Yeah, that and he went against Cam a twenty twenty
one when Cam was like five of twenty one?
Speaker 1 (21:05):
What's I saw a lot of Dolphins fans like, so
this is what he saw? Oh my god?
Speaker 5 (21:09):
Okay, so that was Cam three weeks after getting called
off the couch.
Speaker 1 (21:13):
And clearly what.
Speaker 2 (21:15):
I need I need to explain what his point is,
because I'm Jenu. You're right, the word baffled that describes
what I was listening to this clip. What does he
mean by it? Does he mean that Cam can't play
quarterback at a high level anymore? Because if that's your point,
then duh are you saying simply that you're younger than
Cam Newton and you can still play right now and
he can't because he's older and his body broke down.
(21:38):
So really, all that means is if Troy Yikman is
out here criticizing a quarterback that's playing today, would they
be able to go up to the microphone and say, yeah, Troy,
why don't you get out here and do it? In
twenty twenty five, you got him, You got sixty year
old Troy Aikman. He can't play quarterback anymore. It's a
(21:59):
little different, but not all that different. Basically, what you're
saying is Cam used to play quarterback, but he can't
write now, to which nobody cares about that point you're
trying to make.
Speaker 5 (22:08):
I wonder if he also is just trying to make
the example of just you people in general, Like Ben
McAdoo once infamously said during his first press conference here,
except he use the worst possible example ever by talking
about Cameron Newton. It's like, I know it, just it
just shows how bad the situation is.
Speaker 2 (22:27):
Two is not good at this stuff. Two is really
bad in front of media. He's been bad for the
last couple of years and really defensive too. It's got to.
Speaker 1 (22:38):
Come to an end sooner rather than later down there
in Miami, not only for Mike McDaniel, but also for
Tua at least in my opinion. What else you gotta smoke?
Speaker 5 (22:44):
Well, just when you thought you were done talking about
the twenty twenty two Panthers, Baker Mayfield pulls you back
in because after Sunday's win over to Jets, he said
that that win especially was personal for him and guys
like Hasan Redick, who was a former Jets Because Steve
Folks is now the defensive coordinator for the Jets and
Aaron Glenn's first year back in New York.
Speaker 1 (23:04):
City as a head coach.
Speaker 5 (23:06):
Well, we haven't heard Steve Wilkes respond to him until today,
and here was Steve Wilkes's response to Baker Mayfield, shot
across the bout.
Speaker 3 (23:15):
Facing your reaction to a lot of respect for Baker.
Tremendous football player and he's doing a hell of a
job with those guys down there, So nothing really to
stay beyond that. I don't know how long you've been
doing this, but I'm sure you're quite.
Speaker 1 (23:33):
Educated on it.
Speaker 3 (23:34):
I don't really think an entrant coach has that much
authority of a personnel. If that's the case, I would
have never gotten rid of our best player, Christian McCaffrey.
Speaker 5 (23:45):
So, Walker, what if you made of this whole situation?
Do you really think Baker believes that? Or is this
kind of like a Kobe Bryant just live in a
lie situation?
Speaker 2 (23:53):
No, no, no, that's exactly it. I will reiterate my point
when we first heard Baker Mayfield's part of this a
couple of days ago and say that this was a
Lea Bradford Smith type of chip. It became personal for
Baker Mayfield because he wanted it to be personal. He
was looking for anything to use as motivation, as athletes
(24:14):
tend to do, and decided that Steve Wilkes was going
to be his Why didn't need to be could just
want to go out there and perform for your team.
But some people aren't wired that way. Baker Mayfield, He's
been done wrong. I would say a couple of different times.
Cleveland you could argue did him wrong when they decided
to go after Deshaun Watson.
Speaker 1 (24:31):
When they had it.
Speaker 2 (24:32):
They did, yet at the time a perfectly fine quarterback
that helped them reach success levels they had not reached
with other quarterbacks for sure.
Speaker 1 (24:40):
And played through a very bad injury.
Speaker 2 (24:42):
So I don't hate Baker Mayfield for say any of
any of this stuff. He's just flat out wrong. This,
to me is the Lea Bradford Smith type chip. For
those that don't know what I'm discussing, go back and
watch The Last Dance. There's an episode in which Michael
Jordan plays against the Washington Bullets and Michael Jordan completely
fabricates the story about le Bradford Smith disrespecting mj and
(25:05):
then the jiff, the meme it was spawned. Then it
became personal for me when le Bradford Smith didn't say
anything to MJ. I think that's the part here, Steve
will you just said good game or something like that. Yeah,
it is like, what did you say? Would you say
you don't know you're dead?
Speaker 1 (25:21):
You don't say that to me?
Speaker 2 (25:23):
And then it became personal, and that's why I had
to go score forty five on the bullets. I think
that's what this is for Baker. It's he has to
take out his anger on somebody. You can't take it
out on Scott Fitterer, so you take it out on
Steve Wilkes, who just so happens to be defensive coordinator
with the Jets.
Speaker 1 (25:38):
That's what I make of all of it, all right.
Speaker 5 (25:40):
Now, moving back here to Carolina in its current form
of twenty twenty five, we now go to d Carolina defense,
which which e J.
Speaker 1 (25:48):
Verro was talking about.
Speaker 5 (25:49):
Yesterday and specifically how in the last two weeks we've
seen Derek Brown get back to his twenty twenty three.
Speaker 1 (25:55):
To four It looks about the same.
Speaker 6 (25:58):
I mean, just obviously strong, strong, strong run defenders. He's
hard to block, singled up, and he makes a lot
of impact plays in the run game. He's been hitting
a quarterback and so he's he's really done a really
good job up to this point. But like all of us,
you know, we know we need to coach better a
lot of instances. We need to play better individually and
(26:18):
collectively in a lot of instances, and so we're all
looking towards for improvement, and I know he is as well.
Speaker 1 (26:23):
So Walker.
Speaker 5 (26:24):
Now that we know that Pat Jones and Dj Wantum
are out for Sunday's game, probably if we had to guess,
Turk Horton's still not ready to go this weekend, even
though he's questionable and you're starting two edg rushers. How
important is it for Derek Brown to continue to play
like he has been the past two weeks and potentially
get after the quarterback more?
Speaker 2 (26:44):
Very important, And it looks like the scales might be
balanced a little bit here, Smoke, because you brought this
up a little earlier. But Chad Graff reported that there
is some tough injury news for the Patriots O line.
Starting left guard Jared Wilson is out for this game
against Carolina, and starting right guard Micah Win Woo questionable.
So that's your interior offensive line, your starter right there
at guard on each side of the center. Derek Brown
(27:06):
is going to like his matchup. Whoever draws that match
up is going to like it a lot more with
those guys either one being gone from this game in
Jared Wilson's case, being banged up, or maybe even gone
in Michael lwin Wu's case, who has been a pretty
nice player for New England for a decent amount of time.
Speaker 5 (27:22):
Here, I've been as good as he was early on
in his career, but still solid enough.
Speaker 2 (27:26):
Yeah, and maybe you could even blame that on not
many pieces along the offensive line alongside him that gets
worse than your individual performance might slip. I really like it.
I think Derek Brown needs to show up. I would
hope he plays like a star. He's been playing like
a star each of the last two games.
Speaker 1 (27:41):
Smoke.
Speaker 2 (27:41):
I would even say against Jacksonville there was a few
misleading stats in my opinion on him. The seventy yard
run for Travis Etn. They were running away from him.
If you go watch that play, it makes sense. Hey,
here's Derek Brown. He's one of the best run stoppers
in the NFL, maybe it makes sense to run the
opposite direction. That's exactly what they did, and that's how
(28:02):
they got almost half of their two hundred yard performance
against Carolina in that first game. So yeah, man, Derek
Brown changes the way that you draw up your runs.
And even if you aren't really trying to run away
from him, he might just throw your starting guard, whoever
it is, away like a frisbee word to Brian Baaldinger
and then he makes the tackle final sound that you
(28:23):
got for us here.
Speaker 1 (28:24):
All right?
Speaker 5 (28:25):
We end in college football is this weekend is a
massive weekend, not only a round ear in the Carolina's
but around the southeast because you have Alabama taking on Georgia.
Speaker 1 (28:35):
But we're not going with that matchup.
Speaker 5 (28:37):
We're going with the utter big SEC game this weekend
that is ole Miss hosting LSU, as this is one
of those games that will really tell us what LSU
is all about, because that Clemson win ain't looking too
hot right now, and ole Miss is coming off a
very big win against Tulane at home. But that isn't
the story. The story isn't even Lank Kiffin. It's Lane
Kiffin's daughter, because his daughter revealed on Instagram earlier this
(29:01):
week that she is dating LSU linebacker Wit Weeks and
Steve Minch and Todd McShay had fun with this development
the week of the LSU ole Miss game.
Speaker 9 (29:12):
And you know the Kiffin head coach, thank Kiffin for
ole Miss as long as he's not distracted by his
daughter dating the linebacker from LSU. You know the Kiffin
is gonna be putting this kid in good position to
make plays.
Speaker 1 (29:23):
How about this? Good on you? Weeks? How about on you?
Speaker 7 (29:31):
And then how about Kiffin's response? Priceless? Take the over,
love it hell, go scorech Earth. You ain't gonna win
on social media with Lane? Is there anything better than
the SEC? Is any better than Line Kiffin? I love
Lee Kiffin. We got daughters dating opposing linebackers and head
coaches posting like just love like college football is the
(29:54):
best man.
Speaker 5 (29:55):
So my question to you Walker is did Lane Kiffin's
daughter actually uh set his stat up for a great
weekend or can LSU get a massive win on the road.
Speaker 2 (30:05):
I listened to Bomoni Jones and Spencer Hall talk about this.
Spencer Hall, it is not like you smoke, but his
recall on college football is borderline second to.
Speaker 1 (30:15):
None as well.
Speaker 5 (30:15):
Oh, he's got one of the greatest soundbites ever when
he's talking about Arkansas.
Speaker 1 (30:18):
Bring me my walpin stick there. I mean, he's just
the best.
Speaker 2 (30:22):
Those two were going back and forth on the dynamic
between Lane Kiffin and I believe his daughter's name is
it Landry Landry Kiffin?
Speaker 1 (30:29):
Is that his daughter's name? Yes?
Speaker 2 (30:31):
Yes, so well, and I just now realized this. I
hope to God that he named his daughter after Tom Landry.
I'm making that point up documentary.
Speaker 5 (30:41):
Is in his documentary that from what I saw that
you know, he wanted to be Tom Landry growing up.
Speaker 2 (30:47):
So smoky smokey, I think I think that might be it.
Which just it's so easy to hate Lane Kiffin. There
are plenty of reasons to hate him. But Bomoni put
it best when I when he when he says, everybody
understands him to still be that guy. And yet somehow
he's become a lot more likable in the last five
(31:07):
years or so. Maybe not to Wes Bryant, but he has.
But when they were discussing what Landry Kiffin is, Landry
Kiffin apparently is exactly like Lane. And if you're exactly
like Lane, then you want to mess some bleep up,
and this is exactly the time for you to capitalize
on messing some bleep up. And if you want to
mess with your dad because of that relationship that you
(31:31):
might have with your father, this is the time to announce. Oh,
by the way, I'm dating the linebacker that you're looking
to score on yourself.
Speaker 1 (31:39):
Oh my god, it's fantastic.
Speaker 2 (31:41):
I love I respect this move to the utmost degree.
It is sick, it is demented, it is twisted, and
I love every single thing about it. And I will
say it does remind me something I'm sure you remember
fondly as well, the Brady Quinn aj Hawk dynamic.
Speaker 5 (31:57):
God, they went to her like twenty times during a
Fiesta ball so many times.
Speaker 1 (32:04):
Oh, I think Ohio State's gonna win. Twenty minutes later,
I don't know that her name's looking a little better,
and they might win. They might pull it up and
come back.
Speaker 2 (32:11):
Did we ever get a ruling on who she was
pulling for? Or was she just split right down?
Speaker 5 (32:17):
Considering she's been married to a j Hawk for nearly
twenty years, I think she was rooting for ohiowas stated.
Speaker 2 (32:21):
So okay, I didn't know. I just I didn't know.
I thought it was a fair Quest uniform too.
Speaker 5 (32:25):
Man, I get it when the moms and dads where
stuff like that, But when it's the girlfriend's like, are
you you're coming to cross?
Speaker 1 (32:30):
They went across tacking.
Speaker 5 (32:31):
Oh, you don't like the split unless you're like the parents.
Like I get it if you're the parents, especially if
you're the mom. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, once you start
getting to the sister or brother, uh huh and everyone else.
I remember one time when I went to the Divisional
round game, there was a Michigan fan at the Seahawks
Panthers game.
Speaker 1 (32:49):
Half of his jersey was cut out for Frank Clark.
Speaker 5 (32:52):
Who was a rookie for the Seahawks, and the other
half was cut out for Devin Functions.
Speaker 2 (32:57):
That's doing a lot, and that's a weird combination. Unbelievable,
weird combination. All right, that'll do it for the Live Wire.
Smoke did a great job. Everybody, please clap wherever you
are out there in the world. For the first time
that Smoke has ever hosted the Live Wire. It's what's
on tap, It's the walk Off, it's all of it
coming up next on a Freaky Friday. It's the walk
(33:39):
off on Sports Radio ninety twenty seven wfn Z. I've
heard this in a while, man, I feel like the
last couple of days, we've played some segments that have
not been played in like two years worth of time.
Speaker 5 (33:52):
I was gonna say it says final Friday segment. So
I'm like, all right, it's final Friday segment.
Speaker 1 (33:56):
Let's go. You're just go.
Speaker 2 (33:57):
I mean, how many things in that folder are there
that you don't recognize from our show?
Speaker 5 (34:02):
A lot, just because mine's a lot smaller than yours,
because you've got your own You've got your own music. Yeah,
I think hockey Bed West has his own. Then there's
the elements. There's a lot of stuff in it. It's
like it's like when you go to a friend's house.
You're like, I don't know if I have touched that.
Probably not, you know, Oh my god, I don't realize that. Wow,
what's that?
Speaker 1 (34:21):
Okay?
Speaker 2 (34:22):
Seven oh four five seven oh ninety six ten On
the FanDuel text line, what's the hardest thing to do?
If you can speak to this because I know you've
house sat for Kyle before, but is turning on the
television the hardest thing to do in a house you're
unfamiliar with, or is there something else, Like, what's the
thing that you feel most foreign to at somebody else's house?
(34:43):
Seven oh four five, seven oh ninety six ten turning
on the television at different people's houses. I got like
a fifty percent success rate. It was kind of hard
for cod just because it was YouTube TV. It's like,
all right, this is my first time into that four A.
That's when I find out what the quadbox was.
Speaker 5 (34:58):
I'm like, oh my god, oh during a college football
weekend that I want that sounds.
Speaker 1 (35:04):
I know exactly how you felt with that sound effect
that you just gave me. It sounded like you really
like the quad box. Yes, I did. I did.
Speaker 5 (35:11):
I'll tell you the main thing when your house sitting,
I am. I'm about as delicate as possible when you
go into the restroom, Yeah, I don't want to mess
anything up. I'm making sure every nook and cranny after
you're done is literally clean and spotless. If there's one
little pebble off place or something like that, just like
it's a good point.
Speaker 2 (35:30):
No, it's a good point. How sitting. Yeah, I think
you're right about that, which means we have very different
producers here at WFNZ. Fitty is not that man. You
are smoke and that's why I respect you for it.
I imagine Flounder. I think Shroppy would be like that. But
we have stories about Fitty not being like that, and
that's unfortunate. What's on tap presented by Twin Peaks. Twin
(35:53):
Peaks has locations in Concord and fort A Mill. Twin
Peaks at local Sports Lodge come in from made from
scratch food and signature twenty five nine, not twenty five.
Twenty nine degree even better draft beers twenty five Is
it better? It's just frozen at that point, right, it's
a little too frozen. I know twenty nine is still
below freezing. But you get it out onto the bar
real quickly. It takes about a minute or two, and
(36:13):
it is like, yeah.
Speaker 1 (36:14):
You're good.
Speaker 2 (36:14):
I do love a frosty mug. You know what a
pro move is. I'm willing to wait for it. I'll
get a glass out of the cupboard and I'll put
it in the freezer for about fifteen minutes or so,
and then pouring the beer in that glass.
Speaker 1 (36:25):
It just it tastes better. No doubt.
Speaker 2 (36:27):
I like a little bit of frost with my beer.
Li little bit of frost seven oh four to five
seven oh ninety six. Ten Brown Maba says showers are
the struggle they standing there naked as a j byrn
trying to figure out the hot and cold awkward situation,
No doubt, not no, especially if it especially if it
takes a little while for the water to heat up.
Speaker 5 (36:48):
Ooh, oh, my gosh, and especially if you're if your
shower like it just blows out immediate like a oooh.
That's the worst part about vacationing is showers and hotels
and condo suck.
Speaker 2 (37:00):
Yeah, especially if you're vacationing with people like that. You're
cool with that, you know. But also it's not like
I can just run out to the living room naked
real quickly and figure out a situation or go get
towels for getting a towel, not knowing where towels are.
Speaker 1 (37:12):
We're talking this out.
Speaker 2 (37:13):
But that's also something that might be an issue if
you did not go over that before you start house
sitting for someone. Four Labradoodle says, I'm fat and it's
hard to find the good snacks in somebody else's House
battlehowk Nation says finding the cup or the utensil?
Speaker 1 (37:31):
I want? Yeah, just not knowing what stuff is clearly
gonna be difficult.
Speaker 2 (37:36):
What's on tap? Got a game this weekend? Panthers Patriots
on Sunday one o'clock Fox. Can Carolina find themselves at
five hundred after an zero to two really abysmal start
to the season, but they've had a nice last six quarters?
Can they make it a last good ten quarters after
(37:57):
this one? Tell me, Smokey, how are you feeling about
going into this? Are you willing to give Carolina the victory?
Speaker 1 (38:03):
Yes, I am willing to give Carolina the victory.
Speaker 5 (38:05):
You go back and look at their victories against New England,
at New England, you go back to ninety five and
two thousand and five. What you know, not at New England,
but you look at two of those victories ninety five
and two thousand and five. That's every time they played
with the number five at the end of the broadcast,
so or of the year. So I think it's going
to continue for two thousand and twenty five. By the way,
(38:27):
for those wondering, play by play, Chris Myers and Mark
Shlaire same crew as we had for week one?
Speaker 1 (38:34):
What do you think about sting? Look, as long as
long as I don't have to hear Jonathan Vilma, I'm good. Yeah,
it's been pretty bad with Jonathan Vilma.
Speaker 2 (38:44):
By the way, kay town Steve said, waite Walker, did
you say cupboard? Is that?
Speaker 1 (38:48):
Am I saying that incorrectly? Cupboard? How do you say cupboard?
Speaker 5 (38:53):
I thought that's what it was me too, by the way,
twenty to seventeen victory.
Speaker 2 (38:57):
Okay, thank you. I don't know how anybody else says it. Yeah,
other people writing a thermostat by the way, yet not
knowing how to because we have a little bit of
a weird thermistat at our house.
Speaker 1 (39:04):
So we'll touch it.
Speaker 2 (39:05):
Yeah, it's probably good respect, Yeah, just not to touch
it anyways. Carolina twenty four to seventeen win by a touchdown.
All good about it?
Speaker 5 (39:17):
Also, do you want to say in the road victories
Carolina's had over New England they both have been ended
by a walk off field goal that continues this Sunday.
Speaker 1 (39:26):
Yeah, a weird history. We talked about it.
Speaker 2 (39:28):
You think it's the most interesting record history against an
AFC opponent if you want to include all teams outside
of the division. You think it's Seattle and New England,
but maybe that does happen. It really could be a
wild game if it comes down to the wire and
it's like a launching pad for the Panthers, it could
be a launching pad game for the Patriots too.
Speaker 5 (39:47):
Outside of two thousand and one, there's not been a
full on blowout in this series.
Speaker 2 (39:51):
People are saying cabinet instead of covered. Both are true?
Speaker 1 (39:55):
Right? Is this a Southern thing that I'm just stumbling upon?
Cover solves the thing? Cabinet covered? I don't know anyways.
Cabinet fool just doesn't sound right.
Speaker 2 (40:04):
Yeah, I don't know, man, it felt right to me.
Is this a supper dinner thing? I don't know. All right,
that'll do it. Smokey mop smoky. Good stuff from you, man,
good stuff from you. I appreciate the help, good luck
on the call as you are the PA announcer tonight
down there at North Lincoln.
Speaker 1 (40:20):
I want video, I want recordings. I want all of it.
Speaker 2 (40:23):
Please find the time to record it and then bring
it back here to Weston Walker Slash WFNZ. It's Kyle
Bailey Show with Floud Dog coming up next. Sports Rady
