Speaker 1 (00:09):
The sports Radio ninety two point seven ALF M U
f n C. Fine, he's the Weston Walker Show. Even
the crowd knows what's coming there, Wes, he did it
to you. It's official. It happens. I can't believe it.
(00:30):
We called him out on it. We said you were
getting a little cursy that we had our eyes on him,
and now it's a full blown Flounder curse your ms
do not make it to the World Series and instead
it's the Toronto.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
Blue Yeah, he cursed him at the beginning. He did
say Toronto would win last night. But yeah, man, I
mean it was one of those deals. I thought for
a minute that they were going to get it done.
It felt like it, and then yeah, man, it felt
like it. But then that big home run came and
it was a rap and it was just like after that,
their bats were just crazy hot and Seattle couldn't do anything.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
But so well, yeah, but no, it's not it's not okay.
You can say it's all good. I know you're hurting
a little bit with your baseball team out, and I
know Flounder off the rip just immediately said, oh it's
two nothing you guys have. He's so strong with his.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
Literally everybody in the sports said the exact same thing.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
This is on This is on Seattle for blowing it. No,
it's on you, it's on you. Yeah. I didn't hear that, right,
is it? Because I don't listen to baseball takes. Possibly
I only heard one baseball take and that was your
baseball take that the Toronto Blue Jays were completely done.
Speaker 3 (01:38):
Can you tell me how many teams in the history
of Major League Baseball in the playoffs have blown a
two to ohero series lead when they won both games
on the road.
Speaker 1 (01:50):
One this year, four one this year? The total have
done that? How many of those have been recent? Not
not that I can remember. Well, I guess we're talking
about something the last almost twenty in the AAR. Okay,
so it happened again in the AL and I think
all eyes are on Flounder now. Where this is the
question has the Matt curse actually played out in any
(02:12):
sort of capacity within the last like few months like,
because I have not heard anything on the Matt curse striking.
I just want to know if it's struck Flounder that
That's my only question, because are we do we really
want to do this?
Speaker 3 (02:25):
Because there is someone in this room that had my
football team going eleven and one and now we are
two in from That's true.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
That's what you're trying to deflect though. No, but that
that's fair though, I mean, because are we allowed to
say that West curse North Carolina football by saying they
were going to go eleven and one, and.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
That's a curse. I'll be glad to do that one.
I'll do it every year. You're going to take advantage
of your powers, I'll do it every Yeah, that that's true.
I'm in a national championship the next seasons.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
See.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
Yeah, I'm the only one with any decency in the room.
Right now. It's West and Walker live from the Chandler
Vaulta Studio. See the history that have been sixteen O
two comebacks though, there you go, seev injury.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
Yeah, but not where you've won the first two on
the road. That's the shocking part about this.
Speaker 1 (03:08):
All right, So now we got all the baseball info,
all the research drum has let us. Now we all
know exactly how many times an O two deficit has
been erased. We're live from the Chandlin Volta Studio. CEV
Injury Law dot Com CV Injury law dot Com. One call.
That's all the Carolinas personal injury lawyers. Yeah, bird Dog
BlackBerry saying the Dodgers in four. I mean, if we
(03:28):
want to just set up camp a little bit in
the world of baseball, which we really don't do all
that often on Western Walker, perhaps like a half segment
every year, But it does look like this thing is
about to be a dominant World Series championship for the
Dodgers after having only lost one game in the postseason
to this point. It feels a little one Lakers to
(03:48):
me because of how dominant they've been. They have the
best player in the sport, just like the Lakers did
with Shack all the way back in two thousand and one.
We're seeing dominant performances. It feels like Otani is ready
to win World Series MVP, and the Dodgers themselves are
ready to win the championship, possibly possibly only having lost
one game to this point. It's one of the more
(04:09):
dominant runs. And I asked the question that you talked
about a little bit during the regular season. Can you
flip a switch in baseball with all of the randomness
at play in that sport? Specifically, can you flip a switch.
It certainly feels like the Dodgers have. Yeah. I mean,
when you look.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
At the longest World series Ody was in the last
thirty years, the Blue Jays have the fifth longest at
sixty six to one. And it's funny when I was
watching the game last night, even my mom, she was like,
during the game and it was still in the balance,
and I think Seattle was winning, but she was just like,
it doesn't matter who wins this anyway. She's like, ain't
nobody beating the Dodgers? Is that how it flouder that?
Speaker 3 (04:43):
I don't think they're gonna be I think, hey, they're
better positioned than the Mariners would have been because the
Mariners pitching was just completely spent. So I think the
Blue Jays have a chance to at least take a
game or two in this series.
Speaker 1 (04:57):
But it's just the Dodgers are way too dominant. Man.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
Not only do you have show hey, but you've got
all these clutch postseason performers Keith a Hernandez, Tommy Edmund,
these guys that just show up for the playoffs and
are really difference maker. So I think it's going to
be a relatively short series. But I guess you never know.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
Man.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
People didn't give the Blue Jays much of a chance
the last time they were in the World Series, and
look what happened.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
Let's go to the FanDuel text line seven oh four
five seven oh ninety six ten. We're reading your text
messages all day long on wesn. Walker seven oh four
five seven oh ninety six ten. People writing in about
the curses around here. And now I did not mean
for this to happen, but eyes are starting to shift
your way, Wes, because we ask about Mac and whether
he had cursed any team. Recently, people were saying that
(05:44):
Matt cursed Clemson, but then everybody else was also writing
it off of that, saying, wait, didn't Wes have So
Wes and Walker shared the Clemson Walker have him both,
So if everybody has it unlike the baseball take because
I only heard Flounders say it, but I did hear
multiple people say it on this show and on these airwaves.
(06:07):
We all had Clemson winning it, Mac, did you did?
I myself had him winnto the championship, So we can
share that curse North Carolina. That's all on you and that,
but I know you will because now you're going to
use your powers for evil. And I think going into
college basketball season, you feel in a little better about
the Heels.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
Within the last few looked great. I think they're gonna
win the Natty. You know, Okay, Love, he's going to
be the National Player of the Year. He's not gonna
get hurt.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
Look a bog of it's about to be awesome, right,
that's about.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
To be about to win the super Bowl.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
Hey, let's go, let's get it, Okay, San Francisco. I
want to stay out of it as much as I can.
I don't want no.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
Yeah, I was gonna say the Hornets are gonna be
have the number one pick, so I can curse it
the other way they can make the playoffs and have
a good season.
Speaker 1 (06:55):
Yeah, yeah, I do reverse curse. I kind of want
the number Maybe maybe say that at during the playoff
push and then say the opposite of it. If we're
already going to tank anyway, then I want the number
one over I say, I don't want us to go
win the final. Yeah, okay, there you go, say the
Hornets are gonna win. We should have said this before
the Cooper Flag sweepstakes, but we got conk nipple and
I'm happy about it. In fact, we're gonna talk a
(07:16):
little bit about the Hornets. They start their season tomorrow.
Not only is it the season opener, but it's the
home opener. They'll take on the Nets tomorrow night at
the Spectrum Center. We got some Panthers takes to get
off of our chest though, and getting off of the bus.
Let's not waste any more time. Let's pull up to
the scene Floundy. Let's open up the doors. We look
good getting off the bus. Do we have any faith
(07:41):
in Andy Dalton starting against the Buffalo Bills? With Bryce
Young seemingly missing the first game. Dave Canalis doesn't want
to say it's official quite yet. They're saying they're going
to decide on Wednesday who's going to take first team
reps with this game coming up against Buffalo, but we
can all expect it's going to be Andy Dalton out there.
What's your confidence level? If you have any confidence and
Andy Dalton getting the job.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
The tough part about it is, like I said, the
last couple of times we saw him playing in this offense.
And so now the Bills they'll go back to what
the Panthers did last year when they had Andy Dalton
in and try to figure out the strengths and weaknesses
and all the things that teams do when they're prepping
for games.
Speaker 1 (08:16):
And so that's what worries me the most.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
If he was coming in fresh and nobody had seen
him in this offense, I think that will be a
little bit different. But the fact that there is some
tape on him in this offense with canal Is calling
the plays, I think that can instill a little bit
of fear.
Speaker 1 (08:30):
So I am a little work Yeah, I am too.
I'd rather have Bryce seung out there. So how does
it work? You go back to the games that he
played last year, or he was quite good in You
look at the Vegas game Week three, as soon as
he takes over for Bryce. I mean, Andy Dalton was
just balling all over the place in that game against
the Raiders, and he played quite well against Cincinnati. In fact,
there were some numbers that were better against Cincinnati than
(08:51):
what he had shown in the previous week against the Raiders,
even if the Panthers lost to the Bengals in that game.
So in those two starts, the first two starts for
Andy Dalton of the season, he combined for five big
time throws. He did have a few turnover worthy plays
one interception against Cincinnati, but remember that was because I
believe of a tipped pass. He had four drops. His
(09:13):
receivers were not helping him in that game against the Bengals.
That was kind of a nightmare from his pass catchers there.
But those were the two games that Andy Dalton played
last year where he was very good, and same thing
Seattle two years ago, Bryce's rookie year, Andy Dalton in
a fill in capacity, just a one game performance. Andy
Dalton played quite well and it was the only three
(09:34):
hundred yard performance that we got that entire season. So
I think the hope is, can we get just enough
from Andy for a one or two game scenario and
then hopefully we're done. Hopefully Bryce shown can come back
as soon as possible right after that. But if we
really wanted to get football with it, it seems like
the pressure is the big issue for Andy Dalton. In
those two games that he played, he was kept up
(09:55):
right man Raiders didn't get any pass rush, Bengals didn't
get any pass rush. And then against Chicago against Atlanta,
which surprisingly so last year, they didn't have all this
pass rush. They were right there at the bottom with
us here in Carolina in terms of not pressuring the quarterback.
But they were double digit pressures given up by the
Panthers against Chicago, Atlanta and Washington, and that's when you
(10:18):
saw his performance really dip down. There were no big
time throws from Andy Dalton in those games, and that
was quite bad for him under pressure. In fact, if
he faces pressure, you could see the numbers really dip
down for him compared to all the other quarterbacks. It's
real simple. It's real simple in football pretty much every
single game. But I think especially for Andy Dalton, Damian Lewis,
(10:38):
Dave Kanalis seems to be confident that he'll come back.
That's good. He's been one of, if not your best,
all around offensive lineman. Kate Mays has been very good
in pass protection. Hopefully Brady Christiansen can continue to do
the job at that right guard spot. If they can
keep Andy Dalton up right, I think that's the best
shot you have of beating Buffalo, keeping it competitive and
(11:00):
against Green Bay, which you know with Michael Parsons it
might be a little harder to do.
Speaker 2 (11:04):
Yeah, And one of the big things that they're going
to have to do to be able to do that
obviously is run the ball. They can take some steam
out of that rush. They can you know, really start
to set the tone there and keep them on their
toes if they're able to do that too. And so
I think that's going to be certainly something that the
Panthers are going to want to establish early.
Speaker 1 (11:22):
And so if you're Buffalo, you know, what do you do?
Speaker 2 (11:24):
I think that this is going to be a team
that is going to sell out to stop the run early.
And I think that this is also a team that
when you look at it, they blit to decent amount,
not high, but their pressure percentage is top four in
the NFL.
Speaker 1 (11:37):
So they're gonna want to.
Speaker 2 (11:38):
Get the Panthers in obvious passing scenarios. And so that's
going to be the key for the Panthers first and
second down. Man, can you get yourself to manageable? Because
if you cannot, this is a team that's going to
bring the pressure. And they see the tape, they watch
the games, They're going to see things and dissect things
as well, and so I think their game plan for
sure is going to be to sell out against the
(11:59):
run and make Andy Dalton beat them, and I think
that they can live with those results, however that may
turn out.
Speaker 1 (12:04):
Yeah, Buffalo had a monster pass rush game against the Jets.
Earlier in the season. We did too down here in Carolina,
despite being one of the worst rushing teams in all
of the NFL, and then every other game was pretty
good for them. They were monstrous against the Jets, and
they were pretty good pretty much every single other game.
So I'm hoping that this offensive line can keep them
(12:24):
at bay at Oliver is having a really good year
for Buffalo, and so I'm a little bit worried about
the interior pass rush because that gets on Andy Dalton quick,
especially with Dalton's inability to escape the pocket line. Another
reason that they're going to turn up the pressure. So
cad mays, it really is that interior offensive line. It's why.
Of course, your tackles are really important in every single game,
(12:45):
but the interior pass rush, I hope that's stopped or
mitigated as much as possible. With Cade playing well, Brady
and Damian Lewis, I feel good. I mean, it's the
thing you said he felt great about more so than
any other unit or position group on this team. I'm
hoping they show up against Buffalo because if you can,
if you can lean on that offensive line to pass protect,
I think that gives you a decent enough shot against
(13:06):
a team that isn't quite as good I think, as
many people thought coming into the year. And they rely
a lot on Josh Allen making plays, and they do
rely a lot on running the football. But man, their defense,
they're porous. They allow you to run on them. And
this Carolina team has been very good at running the football. Team.
Speaker 2 (13:22):
Yeah, and I mean Buffalo, nobody thought that they were
going to go undefeated, obviously, and this is a team
that's going through a little bit of their adversity in
their season. And I still think that this is a
good team. Do I think that they're a super Bowl team?
Probably not. I don't think that. But this is a
team that we're going to see a lot of what
they're made of, coming off of a bye week, coming
off of two losses in a row, coming on the road,
(13:44):
and yeah, they're gonna rely on Josh Allen.
Speaker 1 (13:45):
That's what they always have done.
Speaker 2 (13:47):
They want him to be Superman and go out there
and make all the plays. It's going to be the
Josh Allen and James Cook the third show. And so
for the Panthers, what kind of game plan can they
cook up to stop Josh Allen because he can really
apply pressure it to your defense in so many ways
because of his on schedule and off schedule stuff.
Speaker 1 (14:04):
Ultra nostalgia. Really living up to his name here when
he writes in remember Andy Dalton got Player of the
Week in his first start, kind of a theme here
in Carolina. Rico Dawdle did the same thing getting player
of the week. So did Andy Dalton. After that game
against the Raiders last year, eight to three said it's
not hard to replace a one hundred and eighty yard
passer known as a quote unquote game manager instead of
(14:25):
replacing a three hundred yard gun slinger. Shots at Bryce Young,
of course, complainer in chief. If there's more, The offensive
line is good, and Andy Dalton is going to show
you what a decent quarterback can do with a good
offensive line. You guys are saying, You guys are saying,
just enough with this offense having Andy Dalton under center,
it's going to look like years better than what it
looks like. You guys watched the Wash.
Speaker 2 (14:46):
If the game last year, might I remind you ninety
three yards two picks, and that one pick was god
awful to where it looked like he had ghost of
Christmas pass back there with him. When the ball just
suddenly came out and Washington was able to pick it up,
I run it back. So I would advise you guys
to go back and watch Chicago, Atlanta and Washington for
those of you out there thinking that he's about to
(15:06):
come in there and be cap ruining from any given Sunday.
Speaker 1 (15:09):
Yeah, but the Raiders wells right.
Speaker 3 (15:13):
Also, did you watch preseason this year exactly?
Speaker 1 (15:17):
That's the issue with Andy. He's turning the ball over
a little bit when he gets into the game. I
am one that is a fan of a gun slinger
as your backup quarterback more so than game manager. I
can't stand watching a game manager backup plan because they'll
still turn the ball over and you are so reliant
on like winning a seventeen point football game. If you
(15:40):
get past seventeen points with that style of quarterbacking, then
then you're done. Like you can't allow the opposition to
score that much more. It's why I like the Ryan
Fitzpatrick molt as my backup QB. Hey, baby, let's throw
this thing around the art and see what happens. Let's
randomize the game. That's the best shot you got, so
Andy Dalton I think does bring that a little bit.
I don't think he's going to be here to throw
(16:00):
the ball downfield like we see some of these other
backup qbs, but you might turn it over a little bit,
just like he did when the pressure was turned up
the last three games of last year, despite him being
quite good in the first two games of last year.
I'm hoping we can randomize the football game and then
capitalize in some late game scenarios. That's my blueprint for
a victory against Buffalo and then we'll see what happens
(16:22):
against Green. Yeah, about as good as I got. This
is the question as we go into the next segment.
Are we going to get past a point where we
say Bryce Young should absolutely start over Andy Dalton in
the masses here in the Panthers fan base, because there
are still people saying start Dalton at QB when Bryce
(16:42):
is healthy, Like, all right, are we just are we
gonna get past that in the next couple of years.
Speaker 2 (16:46):
And the most popular guy in town is always the
backup quarter direct, So you're I don't think we will, Okay,
I'm with you.
Speaker 1 (16:52):
Okay. The Panthers got way better marks on re grades
of last year's in season trades. Remember Deontae Johnson, Jonathan Mingo.
What does that say about Dan Morgan and does he
continue to salvage his reputation a little bit more so
than some of the other figures in the Panthers organization.
We'll get to that coming up next. Sports Radio ninety
two to seven WFNZ is and I is is yeah
(17:27):
Weston Walker. Sports Radio ninety two to seven WFNZ. We're
broadcasting live from the Chandler VAULTA Studios. I remind you
go to CV Injury Law dot com, Cvinjurylaw dot Com.
One call. That's all the Carolinas personal injury lawyers. Flounder
is looking at me sometimes he likes to communicate with
us through song. I like it when my producer tries
(17:48):
to communicate me through song. What are you communicating with
me here? Flounder?
Speaker 3 (17:52):
Well, shout out to Drake. His team didn't get jinks
this time. He actually gets to see his team play
in the World Series.
Speaker 1 (17:57):
That is true. There you go, Toronto. Connection is what
we're on. Well, that's right. Anytime you say Drake now though,
I just immediately go to Drake May, the guy's jersey
you're wearing currently, That's what I think. Is he the
real Drake in Flounders, I would say so, yeah. I
think I think that's safe.
Speaker 3 (18:11):
I think in American culture he's making a run at
it too.
Speaker 1 (18:14):
I think you're right about that. I think a lot
of people are on the Drake May bandwagon, and they're
not so much on the Drake bandwagon anymore after what
Kenna Klamar did to him. So I think you're right
about that. Drake May, he's taken over the real Drake
here in America seven oh four five, seven oh ninety
six ten. Are you going to be watching the World
Series all that much because your m's are out of it?
Any interesting?
Speaker 2 (18:34):
Because I want to see show hey and okay, what
he's going to do on this stage.
Speaker 1 (18:38):
Well, and I say that with no judgment. I don't
know how much I'm going to tune in, Like, I'll
probably tune in a little bit.
Speaker 3 (18:43):
My team's not there, so I'll tune in a little bit,
but it ain't gonna be like locked in.
Speaker 1 (18:47):
I do want to know how many of you guys
care about this seven oh four to five, seven oh
ninety six to ten. I like seeing greatness. Typically, I'm
one that doesn't hate that. Yeah, A little bit different
from me. I think I'm somewhat of the minority there where.
I I don't hate Alabama football. I know that sounds
like a blasphemous take, but I never did hate Nick Saban.
(19:09):
I never hated Alabama getting there quite frequently. Interest I know,
I will say the great dynasty type team that I hated.
I hated New England because it was really easy to
hate the kind of guy Bill Belichick was, and now
is where we got some evidence on what he is
now Tom Brady or I've actually grown to like Tom
Brady more than what I did in New England where
(19:31):
he was just barking at dudes all the time. Didn't
like that duo. So that's a great team I hated.
But you know, I don't hate Kansas City because I
love Pat Mahomes. I know you do love the cheating, Yeah,
I love the cheating. I'm a fan of. If you're
not cheating, you're not trying, unless you go to deflate football. Yeah,
I like I do enjoy dynasties. There's been some that
(19:51):
I've loved.
Speaker 2 (19:52):
I think sports needed they need somebody to root against
and they need somebody to root for. And you know,
I'm the guy that I like to seedynasties to either
see them win or see them lose, because like Alabama,
I respected the hell out of them for what they
were and I wanted to see them on the big
stage to get beat like that was the thing I
enjoyed about it. Or you know, like Floyd Mayweather. I
(20:13):
would watch his fights because I wanted to see if
somebody was going to beat him. So it's just different
teams for me if I like them or out. Like
Golden State, I was all the way in. I didn't
care if they won ten in a row to Miami Heat.
I wanted to see them lose. So the connection here
is the Dodgers. They look like the dynasty they are. Yeah,
they are the dynasty. I know this is so sports
(20:34):
Radio we can call them that, right. Do they have
to win this? Yeah? Yeah, they got to win. Probably
you got to get three rings to be a dynasty.
Well not in a row, but you got to get
three rings at least in a decade. Or three rings
in a short time span dynasty, right.
Speaker 3 (20:50):
And the other thing is is that the other ring
that they have besides the one that they got last year,
was during COVID, So a lot of people don't necessarily
count that as a they got that.
Speaker 1 (21:01):
Yeah, they got they got the.
Speaker 3 (21:02):
COVID year rings. So I mean, I think if they
win this year their start, they're getting into dynasty territory.
They're already incredibly hateable, so I think they're certainly in
that realm.
Speaker 1 (21:14):
So the Patriots are the ones that I go to
because they won three and four years and then they
won three again in a six year span where they
won lose, one lose, one lose, so it was alternating
super Bowls. And the Spurs we often consider a dynasty,
but those championships are all spread out. I mean, this
is real summer type stuff that we're doing right now.
(21:34):
But the Dodgers, it might just happen. Time to talk
about it might just happen because they have the star,
they have multiple stars, they have multiple MVPs, they have
Mookie Betts, Freddy Freeman Show, Hey O tani Who. It's
not enough to say that he is an MVP candidate.
We have to talk about him like he might be
the best baseball player of all time. Yes, it's crazy.
(21:54):
They got all of them. Show Hey, by himself is
two MVP candidates because of his pitching and hitting. And
they also have Freddie Freeman, who you know, I love
and think is a first ballot Hall of Famer, which
is no small thing in the world of baseball. I
don't know if he'll be first ballot because you know
my soapboxes about the baseball riders. I can't stand him,
but he should be a first ballot Hall of Famer.
(22:16):
And Mookie Betts is an out just straight up hall
of famer. We've got all of them. Show Hey. He's
about to win his third straight MVP. I think Aaron
did Aaron Judge get it last year?
Speaker 3 (22:27):
Did it?
Speaker 1 (22:27):
Or was it two years? Al? Yes, third straight AL MVP?
So is that right? Kindness graat third straight an L yeah,
would be yes. I believe that is correct. I believe
that is correct. Yes, I mean it's crazy. And so
if the Dodgers, yeah, because your boy might win AL MVP.
Speaker 2 (22:45):
Cal Roley Big Nonia won in twenty three, okay, so
willing one in twenty four. So that's the only one
he's got. Okay, he would win consecutive MVP, is it.
Speaker 1 (22:58):
Yeah, if they win the championship and they have all
of these players, and you talk about a dominant performance
as well, where I mean winning every game but one
is on the table for this squad, and even if
they only lose two, that's on the table. That's still
an unbelievable accomplishment.
Speaker 2 (23:17):
Wait a minute, this didn't read Okay, okay, this would
be three because in twenty twenty three he won it
in the AL. In twenty twenty four he won it
in the NL.
Speaker 1 (23:27):
There we go. Yep, that whole switching teams things that'll
do it to you. Yeah, and then he also got
it in twenty twenty one.
Speaker 3 (23:33):
Well, here's the thing overall to credit us, his Angel's
career is almost so forgettable because they never made the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (23:40):
Yeah, you don't think about it like that, him playing
with the Angels anymore.
Speaker 1 (23:45):
It doesn't and it wasn't that long ago, but you
don't even think about it at all. The Angels organization
is where you go to win MVPs and also be
completely irrelevant. Yep, that's where you go. Albert Poohols, Actually
the first year with the Angels isn't as bad as
people remember. But he was with the Angels and it
was not as good as it was.
Speaker 3 (24:06):
Lookkay back then they were decent. They would make the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (24:09):
Yeah, they weren't doing a whole lot though. That was
when the experiment of paying Albert Pouhols and Josh Hamilton
all that money. I mean, they that's where you go
if you're an MVP candidate, you go to the Angels
organization to lose all of your ability won or to
be completely irrelevant and hold on to your ability. I
want to constantly get hurt like Mike Child. Yeah, Mike Trout,
I hate it for him. Yeah, you talk about becoming
(24:30):
irrelevant here in a while. Okay, we'll see what happens
with the Dodgers. A bunch of people saying they will
watch it. A couple people saying that I live in
North Carolina, why would I care about baseball? There are
a few of those people. I think that performance gave
it some juice.
Speaker 2 (24:44):
If Atany was still struggling like he had been prior
to that performance, I think that would have kind of
calmed things down a bit. But I think he definitely
added the juice back to it with that performance, because
people want to see what he's going.
Speaker 1 (24:55):
To do next. I mean, that was the last time
that we saw him three home runs. Ten K's last
baseball point is off the heels of Carolina Chris who
writes in the Dodgers they bought their way to the chip.
While Vladdie has my full support as a Tigers fan,
Go Blue Jays. You know Vlad Guerrero. I think he's
probably my favorite baseball player of all time. It's him,
It's Chris Saoh, it's Ken Griffy, There's a couple. But
(25:17):
Vladdy Daddy, he's the guy up there for me, and
so I'm going to cheer for his son, Dale Earnhardt
slash Dale Junior style. That's what happened in my fandom
and NASCAR, It's kind of happened here in baseball. So
I would not mind watching Vlad Junior get a World
Series championship. And he's been incredible. He's adding four forty
four in the postseason, so he's doing a lot to
help the Blue Jays on their run. But anyways, I
(25:38):
just wanted to share my love for Vladdy Daddy once again.
Let's switch Gears. Let's go back to the Carolina Panthers
conversation ESPN dot com. They put out a regrading of
some of the nd season trades from last year, and
there were only like seven to choose from West, but
the Panthers. They had a couple trades listed just within
the seven that were listed. One trade was the Panthers
(25:59):
movie on from Deontay Johnson after they traded him to
the Baltimore Ravens along with a sixth round pick in
twenty twenty five, and what they received was a twenty
twenty five fifth round pick. You know, we're about a
week away from the one year anniversary of trading Deontay
Johnson and watching his career eventually come to an end.
I'll get us a cake. We should eat a big
(26:20):
old cake.
Speaker 3 (26:21):
And you know what, I think we should just go
down and get some ice cream.
Speaker 1 (26:24):
Yeah, we got forty eight gallons down there. Another monster.
Shout out to Tony's ice Cream for providing us stuff.
I said gallons yesterday, I should be accurate and say
half gallons even still, four and a half gallons of
ice dog on ice cream, buddy, Yeah, four and a
half gallons, nine half gallons of ice cream, grape, chocolate, butter, pecumin, fia.
(26:49):
It was. I mean, it's so great ice cream.
Speaker 2 (26:51):
I mean we are not sitting up pick cap and
a blowing smoke because he brought it to us. The
grape I was skeptical about when he first bought it up.
I was like, man, I'm not sure how much, because
I thought it was going to be a little too sweet,
a little too grapey. But it's like you get the
hit of grape when you first taste it, and then
you get the traditional ice cream taste to it.
Speaker 1 (27:10):
Man.
Speaker 2 (27:10):
I enjoyed a very much shout out to Tony's gas
house all day.
Speaker 3 (27:13):
I thought the chocolate would be the one that I
would like the most, and I do like the chocolate
a lot.
Speaker 1 (27:19):
I will now taste different. It's a half dollon. It's
a little different, to be honest with you, with the
chocolate compared to normal chocolate. And it's amazing.
Speaker 3 (27:26):
It's great. The grape might have been better.
Speaker 2 (27:30):
The grape was, That's what I'm saying, man, And I
like THATI Piicano's my favorite flavor, and that was solid
as well.
Speaker 1 (27:36):
It was very good in my opinion. Great crunch all right,
So anyways, huge shout out to Tony's who Tony Man,
you know what's cool about them? My guy Mike. Shout
out to Mike for the guy that was actually to
the guy that's actually bringing us to ice cream. He said, Hey,
you know, if you want to mention us, that's fine.
It's whatever. We just really appreciate what you guys do
and we appreciate getting some love and it's not like
we're crazy interested and you know, having a whole bunch
(27:58):
of advertisement. What were he to do is just you know,
serve people ice cream and be cool about it when
people roll into the restaurant like, okay, so y'all are
just as chill as possible pun intended. That's what y'all
are down at Tony's and Gas.
Speaker 2 (28:10):
How next time I'm out there, I need to go
in there, because, like I said, I hadn't been in
there since I was little, because I got family, a
lot of family that lived down and I'm from that way,
so I'm very familiar, but I hadn't been in there
in decades upon decade.
Speaker 1 (28:22):
Very Mayberry vibe. They've been in business for over one
hundred years and just everybody is your friendly neighbor. That's
what it is. Everybody knows everybody anyways, awesome stuff. Another
shout out to Tony's back to Deontay Johnson, No shout
out to him. Yes, he came in, helped us out
for maybe like a couple of games. That was about it.
Those would be the last decent games, the last days
(28:45):
of Deonte of his career. So the Panthers traded him
away to Baltimore October twenty ninth. They didn't even get
to November before they were done with that experiment with Deontay.
He gets traded to Baltimore for that twenty twenty five
fifth round pick. The Ravens remember the day course at
the time, and hey, sometimes you're wrong, sometimes you're loud wrong.
I was loud wrong on Deontay Johnson, loud in your face, loud,
(29:08):
we always, we all get it. The original grade for
that trade was the Ravens getting an A and the
Panthers got a D. So now the new grade for
that is the Ravens getting a C because eventually they
didn't risk a whole lot to go get him. But
it drops from an A to a C for Baltimore,
and it goes from a D to a beat plus
for Carolina. That's a good redo. It's a it's a
(29:31):
great regrade. You don't quite get the A, but you
move on from Deontay Johnson. The Panther still gained some
momentum in the second half of last season with Bryce
coming into his own, Adam Theland becomes your number one.
Jalen Cocher blossoms as this other route runner that can
really help you out. And now Deontay hasn't done anything.
(29:51):
I mean, I'm talking about anything. He's out of the
league right now. I don't think he's on a current
roster as it stands. On October twenty first, just almost
a year away from when he got traded. Dan Morgan
winning that one and the other one just real quickly.
The Panthers got an A for trading Jonathan Mingo last
year that remains in A. After trading Jonathan Mingo in
(30:12):
a regrade, Dallas had a D. It's turned into an F.
Says that it should as it should, so two grades.
By the way, the Panthers one of the only teams,
maybe the only team on this list, that were regraded
for their trades in season and great grades either originally
given that hold up or that were changed. Now, Dan Morgan,
(30:32):
tip of the cap on some nice business that you
conducted last year, He certainly did.
Speaker 2 (30:36):
And a thing that you like about it as the
diagnosis he didn't like. He didn't let something just linger
too long. He started to see quickly that Deontay Johnson
was a problem. He started to see some of the
issues that were there in Pittsburgh that he brought with them,
and he said, we're going to alleviate this rather quickly.
And then with Johnathan Mingo, he started to see, hey, man,
this guy just doesn't happen. I'm sure he sourced the
(30:58):
coaches and many others to try to figure out what's
going on.
Speaker 1 (31:01):
Is this guy worth keeping?
Speaker 3 (31:02):
It?
Speaker 2 (31:02):
Was it? So he got him out of here. And
that's the type of environment that you want, because what
that does is it breeds competition, and it breeds guys
to really come in and be focused and ready to
go because they know, hey, if you're not on your job,
if you're not doing what you need to do, then
the panthers are going to figure out how to get
you out of here or how to move on from
you in whatever way possible. And I like that type
(31:23):
of environment in pro sports. I mean you talk about
the Old Cowboys and the Jerry Jones documentary and stuff
like that, and Jimmy Johnson cutting guys after he fumbled
a couple of times. I watch games all the time,
and the amount of times I say I cut that
guy when I'm watching this stuff.
Speaker 1 (31:39):
I mean that stuff breeds culture though.
Speaker 2 (31:41):
When you do that, when guys know that they got
to bring it or they're going to be going, that's
what starts to build some of these dynasty type teams
that we're talking about.
Speaker 1 (31:49):
New England was the same way and many others. Yeah,
I think what this goes to show me. It's a
little similar to my take on Dave Canalis and making
some of those adjustments. Dan Morgan went after Deontay Johnson.
You didn't give a lot up. Dante Jackson was playing
quite well for the Chargers at the beginning of this year.
I haven't checked on it nearly as much, but you
give up somebody that you weren't going to bring back
(32:10):
anyway in Dante Jackson. Right, this is the trade for
Deontay by the way, going back a little bit further
than the trade we're discussing with Deontay going to Baltimore,
So you don't give up a lot. I'd still think
you make that trade ten times out of ten. You
just didn't give up anything. You needed somebody that could separate.
You needed a wide receiver for Bryce Young after what
was a terrible rookie season. That is a good trade
(32:31):
in my opinion, which Dan Morgan was in charge of
that one, if I'm not mistaken. So you trade for
Deontay Johnson, cool having him on the team, deciding to
move on from him because you just didn't want that
attitude in the locker room anymore. I really thought that
they could have held out. I was more. I was
more of somebody that had an issue with the timing
(32:53):
of it, thinking that you could possibly get more somewhere
out there. And maybe that's the case, but you got
a fifth round somebody that's out of the league. You know,
how can you chastise that move anymore? Like that was
my problem with it at the time. But clearly nobody
was willing to give up a ton for Deontay. But
also Deontay just didn't do anything. It's one of the
(33:17):
wilder falloffs that I've seen, Like it's what we're not
a year removed from him having been traded to Baltimore,
and he hasn't done anything whatsoever except play his way
off of three rosters since then. Baltimore they didn't want
him anymore. Houston, they didn't want him anymore. When Deontay
was a part of a playoff team and was winding
because he didn't get the ball in a win and
(33:40):
Cleveland didn't want him. Cleveland nobody wanted him. So Dan Morgan,
tip of the cap.
Speaker 2 (33:45):
To you, well not to mention that fifth rounder turned
into what looks to be a serviceable tight end right now.
Speaker 1 (33:50):
It could get better. And Mitchell Levin, Mitchell Evans looks good.
He's playing better than he's playing better than JD. Just
send Notre Dame. Man.
Speaker 2 (33:58):
Fundamentals fundamentally sound good to go, man, you can count
on he's a steady eddy.
Speaker 1 (34:05):
Is that a derogatory No, I'm saying that's the type
of guys you want. If I know I can count
on you to run the right routes.
Speaker 2 (34:12):
You know, from coming from Notre Dame, you gonna block,
You're gonna do the fundamental things correctly, man. So that's
what I'm saying. At worse, when you pick a tight
end from Notre Dame. I mean you're gonna get a
decent player at worst. Yeah, that's been happening. Tommy Trimple
also from Notre Dame, so Carolina likes point. Michael Mayor, Oh,
he's been a little disappointed. I thought he was gonna
be nice.
Speaker 1 (34:31):
Yeah, Michael Mayor has been disappointing. And that's why the
drafted Rock Bowers over there with the Raiders. Last question
and we can just ask this. We'll come back with
some more Panthers conversation as well as take a look
at the Hornets season slash home opener tomorrow. Is Dan's
only outright miss at this point, the Brian Burns trade,
(34:52):
because Brian Burns looks awesome with the Giants and they
did not capitalize on the Rams offer. But that's not
when Dan In was the GM at that point. That
was still Scott Fitterer who said no to the Rams
offer when they could have gotten too first in a second,
which is still crazy. They eventually trade Brian Burns to
the Giants. They trade him for a second and a
fifth round pick. He's playing better than that. He's playing
(35:15):
really really well rushing the passer, but would you want
to trade? Would you want to pay Brian Burns thirty
million dollars annually? I think he's living up to that contract. Yeah,
it looks like a bargain at this point, no doubt,
no doubt. So yeah, that's one mate. Well, let's chew
on that. We'll come back and maybe discuss it a
little bit more. I also want to get some hornets conversation.
(35:37):
It's Wes and Walker re bouncing all over the place.
Sports Radio ninety two to seven WFZ gets people get
pass wesn Walker the midday Sports Radio ninety two to
seven WFNZ Campus ConA ConA coming up at one o'clock.
(35:59):
Bailey going to be with us at two o'clock to
talk Charlotte, maybe get a little bit more info on
the dismissal of Mike Hill and what is expected to
happen at the athletic director position over with Charlotte forty
nine ers Athletic Department. So Hunter Bailey, Charlotte Observer, Highway
forty nine podcast, He'll be joining us again to start
off the two o'clock hour. One point I wanted to
(36:19):
make before we dive into the hornets opener tomorrow. I
wanted to make this point about Dan Morgan. I think
what I like the most is Dan Morgan is not
afraid to pull the plug on something if it's not
working within a few months, slash a relatively short time
after he makes the move where there might be somebody,
(36:40):
there are gms, there are decision makers that will really
subscribe to this sunk cost fallacy. Okay, well, we already
got him, we already use a draft pick on him.
We got to make it work somehow, some way, and
now it's the classic square peg round hole. It's not
going to fit. Guys. This is not an ideal situation
for him or you. It needs to change. Dan Morgan
(37:03):
is not afraid to move on from something that's not working.
And that goes back to my Dave Canalis point, which
I think I got lost on a tangent trying to
make that last segment. But Dan Morgan is doing a
great job of Hey my bad, y'all, I'm messed up.
Let's move on. So they do that with Deontay. They
don't get to November with Deontay Johnson on the roster.
And I probably did subscribe to the sunk cost fallacy.
(37:26):
It's I'd speak out of both sides, out of my mouth.
On one hand, I'm like, man, you could have gotten
something more for him, right, like, let's let's try to
get something more for Deontay. But reality was you just
got to move on and get this throne. And I
was not I was loud wrong on Deontay. I think
(37:47):
we're all loud right on Jonathan Mingo. That was a
great trade. We could all see the riding on the wall.
He didn't give us anything to like in his rookie season.
A fourth round pick. Are you serious, Jerry, you're giving
us a fourth rounder? Okay, here, we'll pay shipping, Yeah,
to make you spit out your drink take them. Yeah.
And I hate to say that about Bingo. I hope,
I really do hope he figures it out. It's just
(38:09):
there's no signs that he's ever going to figure it
out in Dallas. And so that's a real asset, Man,
get drafted Mingo thirty ninth overall, it's really high. Or yeah,
thirty ninth overall if I'm not to stay or it's
second round, second round. Uh yeah, it's a real big
asset that you allocated to go get him. And then
you trade him after a year, you're done. So I
(38:29):
really commend Dan Morgan for assessing the situation in real
time constantly, just constantly having those check ins and then
making the decision that's best for the football team a year,
a month, a week removed from his original decision making process.
Speaker 2 (38:44):
As I said, that is the type of stuff you
want to breed an environment, to breed a culture, because
in professionals, what you want guys to be able to
walk on eggshells to an extent, to know that they
need to be at that best. Otherwise you wouldn't try
to build depth, you wouldn't have good players or want
good players behind guys to be able to push them.
You want competition at all times. And so when you
(39:05):
start to have an environment like that where you know
going in, hey, if I get out of line, I'm
going to be out of here, then that's a great thing.
And that's where you look at some of the great
teams in this league and you start to see that. Now,
some great teams have a lot looser locker room than others.
But when you talk about the teams to where you
rarely hear lots of internal problems going on well, that's
one of the main reasons why is that they have
(39:27):
zero tolerance to low tolerance for the bull fishing.
Speaker 1 (39:31):
Lake Norman also brings up a great point. Maybe next
year this time, we're looking at another regrade of in
season trades, and they're going to bring up it's not
in season, but maybe it's one before the season starts.
And we look at the Panthers trading Adam Thielen to
the Minnesota Vikings for a fourth round pick. Looks pretty
damn good. Right now, I'll read you what Adam Thielen's
(39:52):
stats are at this time. He has five receptions forty
seven yards receiving. Wow. He had one reception against the Eagles,
two against the Steelers, two against the Falcons. In that
Falcons game September fourteenth. That's the most receiving yards he's
accumulated in a game this year with just twenty six again,
five receptions for forty seven yards. Wes, we're almost at
(40:13):
the halfway point. I think this is a little muddier
to discuss. The water is not as clear. If you
kept Adam Thielen, I think he would be more productive
than what he's showing in Minnesota.
Speaker 2 (40:22):
I was gonna say he'd have five for forty seven
and a half here At the same time, what who
does that say more about?
Speaker 1 (40:30):
Probably says more about us. Right, If Adam Thlen's going
to Minnesota and he's not doing anything, we can call
it nothing. He's doing nothing. So if he goes to
Minnesota and does nothing and you got a fourth round
pick for him, Okay, he might have helped us out here.
That's not a small thing. I don't want to make
it a small thing. But I'm not saying the Panthers
(40:51):
lost that trade. You can't. In fact, you have to
say they want it. You got a fourth round pick
for somebody that doesn't have fifty yards at almost the
midway point of the seat. He had forty seven yards
in a few games last year, even with what was
an injury ridden season. And this is also somebody that
was going to retire at the end of this year.
And if you wanted to keep him and say practice
(41:12):
at four thirty, if you wanted to do that with
Adam Thieling, he was going to try to make a
mess of things in the locker room, which we just
commended Dan Morgan for getting rid of in the form
of Deontay Johnson. Yeah, I think he'd probably regrade that
as a B plus, at least in my opinion.
Speaker 2 (41:28):
I would think so too, because not only that, now
with the draft picks starting to take a turn for
the better, there's more trust with the draft capital now.
Speaker 1 (41:39):
I mean if you were.
Speaker 2 (41:40):
In a situation where you didn't trust your GM and
he said, well, it doesn't matter how many picks he get,
he's gonna flub him anyway. But now when you start
to say, Okay, this draft class looks pretty good, and
now you give him more bites at the apple, so
to speak, he say, all right, what could he turn
this fourth round pick into?
Speaker 1 (41:55):
What could he turn his fifth or six?
Speaker 2 (41:56):
Because that's another thing that I think that is showing
up about this draft that you have to feel good
about if these guys continue to play well. This has
been something that's plagued the Panthers in the past. They
weren't great really past the first round when you talk
drafting without or you know, you want to add a
few hits in maybe here or there. But now they're
starting to get to the meat of the draft. I
always say all the time that people talk about how
(42:18):
the backbone of the league is the fourth through the
seventh round picks, and so when you start to get
good at that, that's when you really start to build
a good football team in program.
Speaker 1 (42:27):
Nelson says, just curious, what's Hunter renfro stats compared to
Adam Thielen. It's a great question, because Hunter Renfro I
don't think has provided the impact a lot of people
thought he would. Yeah. Yeah, if I'm not mistaken. Without
looking up Hunter Renfro's box score, Renfro had forty eight
yards in the Cardinals game alone and two touchdowns. That's
(42:48):
one more yard than Adam deeln has this entire season.
Speaker 2 (42:52):
Yeah, He's got fifteen catches, eighty nine yards, two touchdowns,
and he had forty eight yards in that one game alone.
Speaker 1 (42:58):
That's one more yard than Deling has had all year.
And Hunter Renfro was a healthy scratch. Now that Jimmy
Horn is available and Jalen Cooker is available, no Hunter
Renfro in this game. And Hunter Renfro just even for
the moments, mind you, he had the moments against the
Cardinals to help him come back and make that a game.
And he also had the big fourth down conversion where
(43:18):
you're able to move on in that Dallas contest. So yeah,
interesting stuff with Dan Morgan man looking like he's on
the right side of history with some of these trades.
When we go back and look at it, we do
need to get to some Hornet stuff. Maybe a little
bit later on two o'clock hour can be reserved for that.
But I'm excited for a season starting tomorrow. We're also,
by the way, going to have a season preview show
(43:38):
tonight to kick off the season six to seven o'clock.
That will be right after the Kyle Bailey Show. Smoke Ludwig,
he's going to be pulling double duty, going to be
in the studio for one more hour with me as
we break down the Hornet season. So again, stay tuned
all day long. Kyle Bailey Show from three to six.
Then it's going to be a Hornet's preview show close
(43:58):
to show. It'll be Yours Truly Elite nice. Oh yeah,
yours truly, Yours truly alongside Smoke Ludwig hosting that Hornet's
preview show again from six to seven o'clock. Campus Kuda
coming up next. Sports Radio ninety two to seven WFZ.
Listen to the Wes and Walker Show.
Speaker 2 (44:16):
Wheaties from noon to three only on Sports Radio ninety
two point seven FMUFNZ, the
Speaker 1 (44:22):
Official home of the Charlotte sports fan
