Speaker 1 (00:08):
Only on Sports Radio ninety two point seven A half
m y a u fn zay fine maze. He's the
Wesson Walker Show. Even a crowd knows what's coming there.
Happy no Rules Friday, folks, Happy Football Friday from WESSN.
Walker Sports Radio Radio ninety two to seven wfn Z.
(00:32):
And you know it's a no rules Friday when Fiddy
is on the mic. We brought him back. We got Shoppy.
He's running the ones and twos. We have Fiddy in
the co host chair and it's yours truly driving this
whole shin dig. You can text us Fandal text line
seven oh four five seven oh ninety six ten again
seven oh four five seven oh ninety six ten. I
want to know from you people, how do you feel
(00:52):
about having a no rules fitty football Friday during the
middays from twelve to three. How are you feeling fit?
Speaker 2 (00:58):
Dog?
Speaker 1 (00:58):
Was it a good morning show for you? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:00):
I mean we had to recap a big win last
night for NC State, so.
Speaker 1 (01:05):
That was a lot of fun. I'm sure it was
a lot of fun for you.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
And then getting ready for this game against Arizona, which
I mean, I know we'll talk about it as the
show kind of.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
You know, develops.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
I heard Shroppy's prediction for the game on Sunday as
we were coming into the bullpen. I don't really know
how to feel about Sunday, Like, I think Carolina can
win the game, but Carolina could also go out there
and get waxed. So it's a real pre a weird
place to fund shop as a Panther fan because it's
Week two and it feels like there's so much on
the line for the Black and Blue.
Speaker 1 (01:36):
Shoppy, I heard the score that you I didn't hear
the score you gave. I just heard Collins reaction to
the score, and he seemed to be startled by the
prediction you gave. Should we be startled? What was the
score you gave again?
Speaker 2 (01:48):
So the score I predicted was the Panthers kind of
getting smacked again, twenty seven to thirteen.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
So you're panthering down, Yeah, twenty seven to thirteen. You're
you're ready for panic mode come Monday. Well, this is
what I told Colin.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
You know, I'm at the point now at the Panthers
where I've I've given them the benefit of the of
the doubt. They're gonna have to prove me wrong at
this point, especially with how unprepared you look for week one,
You're gonna have to prove it to me, make me
look like an.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
Idiot, like we'll just show up on Monday.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
Well, you know, NC stay was close to make me
look pretty stupid yesterday.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
But how butt tight were you watching that entire first half? Puckered? Yeah, puckered?
Did you text Wes at all? I did the whole
experience because you texted me, And I can't imagine Wes
is listening right now. You know, both of my co hosts,
Doug Branson for Lockdown Hornets, he famously says, if I'm
not on the show, I don't listen to it, So
not me. If Doug's not on his own show, he
(02:46):
doesn't listen to it. I'm gonna guess that's the same
for Wes as well. So we can talk about you
not texting Wes. But you did text me, did and
you were definitely butt tight in those text messages. I
could see you and c state Wake Forest was a
close one for a while, of course, until CJ. Bailey
and the crew they came back in the second half.
(03:07):
But I was expecting you two have had some sort
of conversation with Wes for quite a while watching last
night's game. I was avoiding it, you know. I.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
Instead of if they lost evinc State lost, I would
have had to have sent a in an apology text
to Wes.
Speaker 1 (03:23):
But I wanted to wait for the actual final result.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
And I'm glad I did, because about two minutes after
I texted you that I was getting concerned, the game
was tied right back up at fourteen.
Speaker 1 (03:33):
Wolfcac writes in on the FanDuel text line seven oh
four five, seven oh ninety six to ten. Wes is stoked.
He's not in the studio today. He did pick wake
Force to win last night, but you know he's gonna
deem a deacon up man. You know that's what the
alum is gonna do. Brian says, three kings. What's good.
We got a different mixture of three kings, but still
three kings. Nonetheless, what's good with you? Brian? We appreciated
(03:54):
wolf Pack. James gonna talk a little trash, Wes. We slept,
walked through the first half and still beat you by ten.
I'm sorry. It's going to be a long season for y'all.
You need to replace that quarterback he didn't look bad
in the early portion of the last night's game.
Speaker 3 (04:09):
No, he looked good in the first quarter, first half,
maybe the first drive of the third quarter. The problem
is is sixty minutes, and I think that's that's the
thing that I think is really going to determine NC
State's ceiling because they've proven they can win games with
their offense, which is a testament and a credit to
Dave Dorian. You know, we had Joe Gillio on back
(04:30):
early the summer who said, I if Doran embraced them
winning with their offense, they could win eight or nine games.
But would he embrace trying to win that way? He's
embraced having to win that way. But these slow starts, man, like, yeah,
you could get down double digit against Virginia and against
Wake Forest, but if you really want to be competitive
against the back half of that schedule that Trump he
was talking about with Colin, you can't be spotting to
(04:52):
the opponent double digit leads because they're not good enough
to overcome those on a consistent basis.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
All Right, we got some more people riding in on
the FanDuel text line. Cac says, two weeks in a row,
they got their defense fixed. At halftime, Big Cat Dan says,
it's the one king, a prince and a popper show
what's good? Who's the king? You guys got to decide?
Is it Shroppy over there with the crown? You let
us know who the king is, who the prince is?
Who's the pauper? Is Fort milkneyact he's vacationing. He sent
(05:19):
a picture in of a Miller light with a Charlotte coozy.
I respect you, Fort milkneyac Myron Goodman a double dose
of fitty on a Friday, sign me up, and Panther
Bo says, well, Shropp, he's a mean guy. He's trying
to get this to stick.
Speaker 4 (05:32):
He is.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
And I haven't really read some of those text messages
because we were doing one thing or the other. But
he's trying hard enough now to where I think we
might just throw him a bone. Why is he trying
to make you such a mean guy out there?
Speaker 2 (05:43):
I think it's because I keep picking against the Panthers
and being critical Panthers. Yes, three days in a row
now he's called me a mean guy, and uh, I
know it's I know he's playing, but uh yeah.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
Starting to hurt a little bit. I guess.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
I guess I've kind of leaned into the to the
heel aspect when it comes to, you know, the Panthers,
because there was so much hype this offseason from the fans,
and also I think from inside the from inside the building,
and it has been and.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
Now you're turning against him. It sounds like sounds like yeah,
I hear you. Also, he says, PF. Are you Panther fitty?
Is that what it is? Yeah, that's what the PF
stands for.
Speaker 3 (06:17):
Yeah, we're not shorthanding things because we can't. We can't
text Panthers fitty. I did not think you were gonna
stick with it.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
You are decked out pretty much had to toe in
Panthers gear today. Yeah, there does seem to be some
genuine change. And I know that everybody has heard Mac
and Bowe talk about this if they tune in from
six to ten AM. But you know me, I'm skeptical
with anything you say you're gonna do. It's just who
you are. Yeah, I can't trust you, and you know
how it is, and I feel zero guilt saying that.
(06:45):
But I am here to give you credit that you
are wearing a Panther's polo. You're wearing a Panthers hat,
and you seem to genuinely care, not only about the
Panthers but especially Bryce. I mean, you had some interesting
things to say about Bryce that made me raise my eyebrow.
If I'm not mistaken, but you do seemed to genuinely care, and.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
I think you'd be glad to know if if you
want to know or want to see it. The Panther
thong is in the truck, so during the commercial break
I can do a little quick change and then I
can be you know, I do you like it? I
could be in Panthers from head to toe?
Speaker 2 (07:14):
You did you also follow the Panthers and leave your
mark in that already?
Speaker 1 (07:17):
Oh god? Oh no, hashtag leave right, it's no rules, Friday.
See that. That's the kind of joke that Wes would
be disgusted with and give you a stank face. I'm
somewhere in the middle. It was a great joke, especially
with how it pertains the Panthers and hashtag leave our mark.
But now I have terrible, terrible images in my head,
and it all starts with Fitty being at a thong.
(07:39):
Let's pull up to the scene right away. Let's open
up the doors. Shrop dog. Let's get off the bus.
We look good getting off the bust. You like it, Fitty,
Just admit I got it. I got a camp here.
Just a little bit. You like the thong just a
tiny tiny bit?
Speaker 5 (07:59):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (07:59):
My like watch is too much? He likes it a
little too much. By Wednesday, I got a little comfortable
in there. You know, there was a little bit more
breathing room if you will.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
There's no breathe. I will say, I've never worn a
thong in my entire life, so I guess I can't
speak from experience, but I would tell you it does
not look like there's any breathing room at all.
Speaker 3 (08:19):
I was gonna, you know, there was breathing room for
the back, maybe not the front. And I'll just say,
full disclosure, I did go to Victoria's Secret and was
looking up some sales if I wanted to really venture
in and really expand my undergarment wardrobe if you will.
Speaker 1 (08:36):
That's not why you were at victoria Dude's. Floss Dude
like a walrus flossing word a family guy. Let's move
on very quickly. I don't know why I keep going
back to some terrible, terrible content. NC State. They get
the win last night over Wake Forest. They end up
winning thirty four to twenty four. This thing was tied
and then NC State really rallied, especially in the second half,
(08:56):
to come back. You know, I love CJ. Bailey. I
think you continue to make a case for him being
one of the best quarterbacks in the ACC. It's NC
State's defense that keeps spotting the other teams points. As
you mentioned FITTI. Here's my thing about NC State though,
because we came into this season not knowing really what
to expect from them. We knew that we liked the
(09:18):
talent that CJ. Bailey possessed. I was a big fan
of Hollywood's Mothers. I think a lot of people really
liked what he was in the backfield. I was more
a fan of Noah Rodgers and Justin Joe Lee than
I think others were. Coming into the year. Joe Lee
was considered a really talented guy. I think Rogers is
in that space of not delivering on the expectations from
(09:38):
last year but still being a valuable player. It's the
defense that holds them back. But man, my question is
do we start to adjust how we think NC State
is going to perform over the course of this entire
season based on what we've seen the first three weeks. Yeah,
I think they're the best team in the triangle.
Speaker 3 (09:58):
I think they've emerged as the best in the triangle,
and I think their ceiling is higher than Duke's, although
you know Duke was competitive last week against Illinois. I'll
beat all the turnovers on the on the penalties, but
those those happened.
Speaker 1 (10:13):
That could be a fabric what that team can be
week in week out.
Speaker 3 (10:16):
They're definitely better off right now than where Carolina is,
although I'm still optimistic what Carolina can be under a
Belichick here in year one. They beat wake Forest last
night obviously, So Yeah, And I was not prepared to
say that. I thought they'd be the third team in
the in the triangle. I thought it'd be Duke Carolina
and then NSTI State. But I think that offensive firepower,
(10:36):
which is legitimate because it's a complete offense. What was
their problem last year walk It was the Casey Conception
own show. But now they've got Hollywood's mother's involved. You've
got multiple guys in the in the passing game involved,
and CJ. Bailey just might be that guy, and so
this offense is explosive, it's dynamic.
Speaker 1 (10:53):
They know they got to put points up week in
week out.
Speaker 3 (10:55):
Kurt Roper's on a fantastic job as their play caller,
and that could be what carries him to another eight
to nine win season for Dave Dorian, but in a
year where they're respected to maybe go six and seven.
Speaker 1 (11:04):
I think the relationship between Kurt Roper and CJ. Bailey
is on full display. The fact that one Bailey's just
uber talented, but also the fact that I think Roper
knows how to dial him up for Bailey to hit
and put him at advantageous situations with all of those
weapons around him. I think you've seen that on full display.
It's been awesome to watch. Dave Dorton did talk about
what allows this specific NC State team to be so
(11:27):
good at coming back in these games. Here's what the
head coach had to say.
Speaker 6 (11:31):
You know, there's a lot. There's a lot that goes
into that. It's the whole offseason. It's how hard these
guys were, how much chaos we put him in. He
tested them. I told him when they got back, it's
going to be the hardest thing we've been through, and
it's going to make him the closest team they can
be if they fight through it all. And they did straight.
Coaches did a great job. Our coaching staff spend a
lot of time with these guys, and I think our
(11:53):
training camp was built a certain way where they got
to know each other. And that's hard. You know, you
have forty one new players, and I think that's one
of these things in college football. You've got to see
the guys play, figure out who you are a little bit.
But we knew we needed to come together and that
was the thing last year's team didn't do. So it
(12:14):
was a major part of what I wanted in the
offseason was to create that chemistry on the team. Winning helps,
you know, and getting guys out there making plays helps
build belief. And you know, I think playing the schedule
that we've played has helped us. You know, we've been
tested that team haven and so it definitely put us
(12:34):
in a better position in Week three by playing the
two teams that we did.
Speaker 1 (12:37):
Well. I know about you, but I'm always amped after
hearing Dave Boren speak every single time that he wins
a game. Hear me out he sounds like Kevin Costner
a little bit. I could see that. I think Dave
Dorian there seems to be a little more rasp maybe
in Kevin Costner's voice. I think Kevin Costner has a
little more emotion than Dave Doran does. But I can
feel that maybe even probably not looks like him. But
(13:00):
the thing is, if you're going to have somebody play
a college football head coach in a movie, you're just
default gonna go with Kevin cost because he loves sports
movies anyway. Yeah, so I could see that though. I
like that pool. The thing about Dave what he's speaking
about there is like I view him as borderline college
football Frankenstein. You just can't kill this guy. You go
into a season, you have all these expectations, you fall
(13:23):
flat on your face, just like they did last year.
NC State fans want you out, even if you have
an impressive resume next year. There are reasons to believe
in some sign of life with this squad, and then
they deliver, and then it's the undertaker lifting himself right
back out from that laying down position and now they're
(13:44):
actually a good football team again. I know there's a
lot of focus on the second half of this college
football season for them, if they beat Duke, which is
going to be their toughest opponent that they face to
this point, that's an eight day September twentieth, to be exact.
They have Virginia Tech, they have Campbell right after that.
If they beat Duke, then they're gonna be favored to
go six and oh yeah, and then they have a
(14:05):
tough schedule Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech, Miami, Florida State,
North Carolina. North Carolina looks like an easy opponent now,
but that's the only team that looks like an easy
opponent at this moment in time. I'm not going to
write North Carolina off at figuring something out just yet,
but you can squeeze in two wins there, and there's
just another eight win season for Dave Dorian. What was
a phenomenal start. Maybe you lose quite a bit of
(14:27):
games in the second half, but you go six and oh,
it's hard to see that season being an outright failure
from the rest of the way. From that, from that
specific point, I should say.
Speaker 3 (14:38):
And I think that's what really drives the fan base
so chaotic with him, is because when they're supposed to
be winning nine, ten games, maybe going to an AC
title game they win six or seven. This year, they're
maybe supposed to win six maybe seven games, but they
could be six and oh, and who knows when they're
six and oh. Where we're at, well, you know what
happens to Clemson and Georgia Tech this week? What does
(14:58):
Miami look like? There will be know as Florida State
does their early season momentum carry over, they can be
dreaming about maybe getting to the ACC title game once again.
And so the back half of the schedule is going
to be proved where they're gonna lie. But if they
go eight and four, you can't be disappointed with with
forty one new players, with Dave Dorin and them embracing
(15:19):
trying to play a new style of football, trying to
win with their offense. So uh yeah that I think
that that game next week's really gonna set the tone
for how the fan base feels about the season, because
they get to four and oh, you know they'll get
the six and oh is eight and four nine if
they're on the table for this footback team.
Speaker 1 (15:35):
Last thing before we move on. I do wonder if
we're in store for a North Carolina Drake may type
season for them where they start off so hot and
then they falter so much in the second half that
you actually do lose some of that good grace that
you built with the fans because they live in a
world of what have you done for me lately? I
wonder if that's going to be at play, because it
is going to be frustrating, as you just mentioned, it'll
(15:56):
be fascinating to see how all that plays out, especially
in the second half of the year. Game Day Dubs
coming up next. The who, the what, the when, the
where the why? Talking all about the Panthers Cardinals matchup,
I'll tease you with the who who is the Panther
you expect to drastically outperform Week one what they gave
you in that game against the Jags. Let us know
on the Fandel text line. We'll be back in a
(16:17):
moment right here on wesn. Walker, Who do you think
will dramatically outperform their Game one output going into Arizona
(16:39):
Week two? Seven oh four, five, seven oh ninety six ten.
That's the fand Old text line, and you're listening to
Wes and Walker, except it's Western Fitty and it's Western,
Fitty and Shrappy. On Sports Radio ninety two to seven WFNZ,
it's Walker and Fitty and Trappy. You know what. Founders
said that as well, let's damn decent of you. I
didn't expect you to want to put my name first,
but usually I just put everybody else's name first, because
(17:02):
the Walker is the last part of the show and
we're not replacing me. I'm here replacing West, and so
I put both you and Flounder and Shrappy usually ahead,
and so I try to be open up the door
for others kind of guy. But I appreciate that Fitty,
you're panthers Fitty? Is he nicer? Shrop cowboys? Fitty was
kind of a mean sob. But Fitty, I wonder if
(17:22):
we're starting to turn a little bit of a new leaf.
I'm skeptical in saying that I'm scared, but I can't
help but feel the way that I feel with the
way that he's changed some of his behavior recently.
Speaker 2 (17:34):
I think it's all an act. Yeah, I think it's
all a ruse. He's trying to get us to get
to have our guards down.
Speaker 1 (17:41):
It would be something he does and I'm not allowing
that to happen. Shrappy. Strappy is bulletproof. There is no
penetrating that shield of shrappy with your niceness. There was
a little bit of mine because I just want you
to be a little nicer, and so I'm hoping for it.
But I might be sniffing the hope. I'm a little
too hard.
Speaker 3 (17:57):
I mean, if y'all want, if y'all want the truth,
this is what like potential relationship. Fiddy looks like. Well,
he's a lot nicer, a lot of easier going.
Speaker 2 (18:07):
Of course, Fiddy when he gets her girlfriend, she'd live
a five hour plane ride away.
Speaker 1 (18:11):
Dude, just for a little bit. But this, but well,
I don't know if this is better or worse. I
don't know. I don't know if it's yeah, I don't know.
I'm trying to get a grip on if it's better
that she's all the way across the country or if
it's worse. I think it might be worse. I think
it's borse it's better and worse.
Speaker 3 (18:30):
So it's better on the weekends, okay, because I get
to just lock myself away and watch as much college
football as I want.
Speaker 1 (18:36):
That's true.
Speaker 3 (18:37):
But you know, when there's Wednesday and the Mets are
down seven nothing in the third inning. Yeah, I don't
have someone to turn to to sev you know, okay,
we I'm gonna watch the Mets anymore. You want to
watch a movie, you want to go get some ice cream.
Speaker 1 (18:49):
So, yeah, it's funny you say that, and everybody else
writes in on the text line like they knew this
the whole time. Walker, what are you doing? Like Aja says,
it's these dates he's going on. I don't think it's
panther Fitty. He was still a little wild when he
first made the switch. But I've been noticing this com cool,
confident type aura around Fitty lately. Same thing, JJ said Fiddy.
(19:11):
I don't know about this part being true, but he said,
Fitty finally getting some action makes Fitty a little nicer.
We don't need that yet. Hey, And I'm saying, take
the slow pathway here, like she's across the country. It's
all good if I get this Fitty. Perhaps I'm the
monkey that should not question why the cookie shows up
in front of my face. Just eat the tasty cookie.
(19:33):
That's what I think I should be doing right now. Yeah,
you should be eating the cookie. This is what happens
when I go on three dates. I have two FaceTime
phone calls late at night. The concern is that she's
going to be back for the hoopsies.
Speaker 3 (19:45):
I know, and it just I mean because like do
you know how you know how it was working with me,
Like when Carolina was good, I was a joy to'll
be around if we have one of those Schubert Davis years.
Speaker 1 (19:55):
But we're doing the roller coaster thing.
Speaker 3 (19:57):
Oh god, And I'm not sleeping anymore than I already
than I already am. Yeah, you know it's gonna be
a rough couple months for but you know, uh, the
panther Bo says, if it's a ruse, I'll have to
join Shroppies poppies or flound dogs hound dogs.
Speaker 1 (20:10):
I love. I love flound dogs, Hounding. It's a pretty
good one. That is the best army name I think
that exists. Ill It's it's good, but flound dogs, hound dogs.
We need to make that a thing. I need to
continue to bring that to the airwaves. Salty Pirates said
he has to go across country to find someone who
doesn't know his background. That's true. It probably helps from
(20:33):
Washington Girls they don't know just who Fitty really is.
And Bagel guy, he's writing at all caps. It's not
an act. Fiddy has a woman in his life, so
they seem to agree with you that this is the
difference here and it's not actually pulling.
Speaker 2 (20:47):
Tea pans all you guys, you're all letting your guard down. Dude,
I'm not gonna fall victim to this.
Speaker 1 (20:52):
Strappy is the weird scientist telling us the volcano is
going to erupt and we're just brushing you off or
some no, it's not. He's fine, it's fine, and you're
warning us because you still see underground activity. The who,
the what, the when, the where, the why. Let's kick
off the game day dubs with the who who is
the panther you expect to drastically outperform what they did
(21:12):
in week one. I'll lead it off with j T. Sanders,
partly because I'm hoping very badly that he outperforms what
he did in week one. But I think it is
going to happen. If you look back at what the
Cardinals did against the Saints, they won, but they also
allowed Juwan Johnson to go off, and Juwan Johnson did
a lot of his work, not necessarily against any specific
(21:34):
cornerback and or safety linebacker that was in coverage. In fact,
he was getting targeted no matter who was lined up
across from him. So we had a couple of targets
against Max Melton, he had one target against Will Johnson,
He had two targets against Mac Wilson Senior. He had
one target against Dadrian Taylor, Demerson or Demerson, I would say,
(21:54):
And then Jalen Thompson was on him for three of
the targets. Like, he was targeted matter who was on
him and had all sorts of success, being targeted more
than any other tight end in week one and having
more receptions than any other tight end in week one.
So if JT. Sanders can get loose because he did
lose weight, he did become more athletic, he did care
(22:15):
about his craft. The other part you got to do
now is hold on to the football. But if T
mac is, if T mak is the guy that the
Cardinals are so focused on, somebody else has to do
their job. I just can't believe in XCEL until he
shows me. Hunter Renfro borderline same thing, even though it's
a certainly different space from what Xcel is in. JT.
(22:37):
Sanders is one of those guys that has shown us
some flashes. I still believe in him, even if it's
not like he's had a ton of great games. He
did show us quite a bit of production before he
got injured last year a little bit later in the season.
I think JT. Sanders is my answer for who I
think is going to drastically outperform what they did Week one.
Speaker 3 (22:55):
Yeah, I'm going to go with a pass catching target
as well. I'm going to go with old reliable. I
think David Moore shows up and shows out in this game.
Remember the game last year at Here at the Bank,
he caught a beautiful touchdown pass from Bryce and people
were still kind of wondering why the hell David Moore
was on the football field. But he made a lot
of plays when Bryce played his best down the stretch
(23:15):
a year ago. And I don't want to say that
the staff is given up on Excel, but you know,
after the struggles last week, I think they'll be looking
for a much more proven, reliable target out there. Renfro
is still working his way back just to getting into
football shape, and so I think it's unfair to ask
too much out of him. I think this could be
a game where Renfro puts or not Renfro, but David
(23:36):
Moore has I don't know, five catches fifty five sixty
yards that third down target to keep the chains moving.
I think David Moore shows up in a big way
for Carolina on Sunday. I think it's interesting you guys
are going with the pass catchers. I'm gonna give a
shout out to Matt and Greensboro. Him and I are
both in the same wavelength here. Austin Corbitt has to
play better, and I think that he will. The way
(23:57):
he performed in week one was not acceptable, and I
think that's an easy bar for him to over you
to overcome and play drastically better than he did in
week one. So I'd go with Austin Corbett. That's my answer.
Speaker 1 (24:10):
Yeah, awesome, you're right. He does have two other people
writing in on the Fandel text line also about this,
Bangers Only says I hate to say it. I don't
think anybody's going to overachieve nine to one zero says
you hope it's Bryce, Lol. No, I do. If he
played a lot better than what he did in week one.
Then I think you're on a nice pathway towards a
victory Matton Greensborough. As you mentioned the same thing, Austin Corbett,
(24:31):
and we don't have many other pass catchers listed, so
you and I both did he going with some pass catchers.
I would love for them to help out our quarterback.
What up next? What does the defense have to do
to restore your belief in a varo? I would amend
this to a certain degree, and is it possible? If
it is possible, I think what he would have to
do is one definitely not allow two hundred yards rushing.
(24:57):
James Connor is very good. Trey Benson broke off a
big run to the outside last week. I think what
would have to happen is we be okay with his
personnel decisions, which means playing Leithan Ransom, which means playing
Nick Gorton more. I'm okay if you don't play ou
Man meel in a ton more. I still think he's
pretty much a third down pass rush specialist. I would
(25:18):
like to see him out there a little right. He
played eight snaps last week. I don't know. If he
doesn't get thirty, I'm going to be fine with that
perhaps we double that, perhaps we get close to twenty.
I just want to see him out there on third
down packages, third and long. But I want to see
score and I want to see ransom. I want to
see you limit the run game to where maybe they
(25:38):
only get I don't know, one hundred and twenty yards total.
Oh wow, Oh that was the number. I oh, total total? Yeah,
you think that's too much? Wait? Wait rushing right? Yes? Okay, yes,
that was actually the number that I landed on with
with Colin. Was Zach exactly one twenty? You said, oh, wow,
did you think I was going total offense or you
think one twenty would still be bad?
Speaker 4 (25:57):
No?
Speaker 1 (25:57):
I think one thing.
Speaker 3 (25:58):
If they give up one fifteen run game, I'd be
pleased with how bad the run defense has been. You're
talking about seven straight games of two hundred yards or more.
We get that number down to one fifty, hell, I'll
be optimistic about the potential of defense takes that next step.
Speaker 1 (26:12):
Part of this is over correcting though, right, yeah, Like,
if you allow one to fifty, then okay, great, it's
a step in the right direction. I don't know if
you're restoring faith within this fan base as a play
caller defensively, if you only allow one twenty, you get
the win. Marvin Harrison doesn't go off, because that's the
thing I don't really question, man. I think j C.
Horn matches up extremely well with Marvin Harrison. Not only
(26:34):
is jac Horn just a good period, but I think
the strengths that he possesses actually are very good against
what Marvin Harrison is. Yeah, Marvin is not some burner
that can every once in a while beat Jace Horn
with precise route running. He's a good route runner, but
I think jac Horn's going to be sticky with him
and physical. I'm good with that matchup. Leave them on
an island, man, I can trust that. Mike Jackson somewhat similar.
(26:57):
I think he's just a rock solid cornerback on the
oppo sit side at JC linebackers got to play better.
I think Trayvon Merrik Will that's the guy that I
have some confidence in. So all that to say, play
the younger guys. I would love to see it only
limit the Cardinals to one and twenty yards rushing.
Speaker 3 (27:13):
I'm gonna play Devil's advocate with this answer. Walker, I
don't think there's anything this defense can do that'll restore
the faith in a Varro. If the defense doesn't prove,
I think Dan Morgan will be the guy that gets
the credit because he went and got the guys they
needed up front, and maybe their rookies come along.
Speaker 1 (27:30):
Scoting Umn Miellen.
Speaker 3 (27:32):
I think this fan base has so far gone on
a Varo that they won't be willing to give him
the credit.
Speaker 1 (27:37):
They'll just praise the GM.
Speaker 3 (27:39):
The big thing to me, some of the MAC talks
so much about this week when we were reviewing the
Jackal the Jags game, they were in the nickel so
much in obvious rundowns and it's why they he felt
like they were able to get run on as easily
as they were to over two hundred yards for a
seventh straight game. That's something that I think I want
to be the need to be mindful of, like have
(28:01):
the right guys on the field in the right situations,
and then can you get them into third and six,
third and sevens where you can you can dial up
the blitzes because I do think whenever the defense is
winning on first and second down, he's been a very
good blitz play caller. But you got to get in
those situations to dial up those blitzes. So that's something
for me. Can they win enough on first and second
(28:21):
down for him to get aggressive to send a cornerback
or two at Kyler Murray to maybe make him throw
an a interception?
Speaker 4 (28:29):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (28:29):
Yeah, I think with the defense, I think, you know,
limiting the run is obvious. I think if you want
to go outside of obvious, I think if we're able
to find a way to limit what Tree mc bride
can do, I think that'd be really impressive.
Speaker 1 (28:42):
Limit him to one hundred and twenty yards. Well, yeah,
that might be the line.
Speaker 2 (28:46):
No, I mean if you could, if you could limit
his impact on the game, I think that's impressive, especially
with the linebacking group that we have. If you find
a way to restrict what he's able to do and
make Marvin Harrison, you know, Junior, a guy that's for
the most aren't pretty unproven. If you forced him to
be the guy that beats you, I think you can
live with that.
Speaker 1 (29:06):
If you limit the run and Drey mcbridn bagel guy
giving me some credit. Thank you, bagel guy. It's not
often I see that from you. He says, I'm right
on it. You're right on it too. Shoppy with the
rushing total FANDUL props. R. Connor sixty four, Benson thirty six,
Kyler twenty eight, won twenty eight total, which, Fitty, I
know you're saying one to fifty just because the bar
is low, and you're absolutely right about that. Let's move
on to the win real quickly. Win. Is this win
(29:28):
the rookie corner gets the best of Temac Travis Hunter
didn't in Week one? He was the second overall pick
in the NFL draft. Does Will Johnson do it? Who
was not the second overall pick, but he was considered
a highly touted cornerback prospect before he got injured. The
medicals weren't great. That's the only reason that he slips
all the way down to Arizona. But it's one of
(29:50):
those guys that when he slips, and then every draft
evaluator checks out this election process for the Cardinals and
they see that they got Walter Nolan, who has high
upside not playing by the way he's injured. They see
Will Johnson goes to them in the second round. The
Cardinals are one of the teams that everybody points to
and says, oh yeah, they are one of the winners.
And Will Johnson is giving you immediate return on your investment.
(30:12):
So te Mack is doing the same thing here with Carolina.
Is this finally win? I say finally, like it's only
like it's been more than one week. But is this
the week when the cornerback, the rookie corner on the
other side, gets the better of our rookie wide receiver?
Speaker 3 (30:26):
Which I say no, because I think there's already a
chemistry that's been developed between Bryce and t Mac and
with just how compromise this wide receiver room is. You know,
with the trading away of Adam Thiland, you got the
Jalen Coker injury hunter ren for us to work on
his way back. He's going to get fed the ball eight, ten,
twelve times. So I still think he's going to put
up numbers. And I think, you know, if he has
(30:48):
a chance to make a play in the insur and
they didn't make in the Jacksonville game, I think he
comes back, bounces back and makes that play this week.
Speaker 1 (30:55):
So it's gonna happen.
Speaker 3 (30:56):
I think there will become a point where he has
a game where he gets held to be one or
two catches and the targets are limited. I don't think
that's this game. I think he puts up six seven,
eight catches sixty plus yards and it's a big reason
why this offense I think puts enough points up on
Sunday to be competitive.
Speaker 1 (31:12):
Uh yeah, My question is Will Johnson their number one cornerback.
Speaker 2 (31:17):
Yeah, he is, so I would say there's potential because
I think going forward he's gonna get the best cornerback
from the other team.
Speaker 1 (31:26):
On On McMillan.
Speaker 2 (31:27):
I think he showed that in Week one that he's
the best receiver on this team. I do not think
that Will Johnson is able to really limit the effect
of it mil And I think you know, someone's gonna
win a rep every every now and then, you know
what I mean. But I don't think that he's gonna
be able to lock down Ted and make and make it.
Speaker 1 (31:45):
So you know, he's ineffective, by the way, So you
do have Will Johnson and then Max Melton are your
two corners. The other thing too, perhaps this is you know,
a little bit of a misleading question because Travis Hunter
and team were not lined up across one another every
single snap. Tea Mack even told you he was surprised
that he didn't see Travis nearly as much as he
(32:06):
thought he would. So maybe that's at play here with
Will Johnson. If you look back at who he covered
in this last game against the Saints, the guys that
he covered were Devon Vailey, Chris Alavi a Lobby Goodness, Gracious,
Chris a Lave, Jawan Johnson, and Raheid Shaheed. And he
guarded Rahee Shaheed four targets in this game. So you're
(32:28):
gonna move Tamack around and if you feel like he
can have that better matchup against Max Melton, I think
Dave Canalis, we'll do that, all right, final one before
we welcome well Wes Bryant. On the other side, the
where is this where we experience week two deja vu?
With Bryce? You could use deja vu, however you want
to deja vu in terms of what we saw week
one against Jacksonville or deja vu week two last year
(32:51):
where it was all time scary, season, awful scenario. You
immediately have to bench him. Either way you want to
frame it, I'll say no, I don't think Brian in
that territory. I think we have gone to a point
where I can trust Bryce and bounce back situations. I
don't think the Cardinals have this out of this world defense,
and some of the defenses that Bryce played last year.
(33:14):
I would say he actually performed pretty well in Kansas City, Philadelphia.
We've gone through some of those games at nauseum. So no,
I don't think we experienced deja voud with Bryce Shaw.
Speaker 3 (33:23):
I don't think we do it either because and you'll
hear when you play the menachime sounds later today. There
was still some good in what he did last Sunday
against Jacksonville.
Speaker 1 (33:31):
It just wasn't consistent. Part of it.
Speaker 3 (33:33):
His wide receiver room let him down. There were still
plays where he was throwing with anticipation, where he was
seeing the field. I thought his pocket presence last week,
for the most part was well. It was very good.
He pulled the ball down and ran. They got like
forty rushing yards in the game. So I'm gonna say no,
because I think his mental state is so is in
a much better place where this year where it was
(33:55):
last year. Last year he was a broken, defeated man,
and it was evident after the Chargers game he had
no confidence. I don't think he lacked confidence on Sunday.
I think he was frustrated by the lack of execution.
I think that gets corrected and you see that Bryce,
we saw the last eight games of last year show
for the first time this year.
Speaker 1 (34:13):
What do you think shopping.
Speaker 2 (34:16):
I'm gonna say, yes, oh Noah to week one, but
you really are turning here.
Speaker 1 (34:20):
No no, But I'm gonna give you the reasoning why.
Speaker 2 (34:24):
And it's more from a fan perspective, and like a
lot of people, the way that we've seen on the
text line is that his quote unquote bad performance in
week one was not on not all on Bryce, but
people still kind of feel that way, and I think
that's where a lot of fans will be that if
we lose and it's my score twenty seven thirteen, I
(34:48):
think people outside of myself will have that view of, oh,
here we go again with Bryce because drop passes. You know,
still he mistakes from Excel for some reason, people still
seem to attribute.
Speaker 1 (34:59):
That to Rice and that being his fault. As far
as I saw that, it was one texter. But yeah,
that's that's a wild tech.
Speaker 2 (35:06):
Yes, So you know, I think from a general standpoint,
I think there's some people that think that we're still
stuck in the mud. Like, I don't have terrible feelings
about how Bryce played last week. I think he had
a relatively decent game. And that's where I think I
met with deja vous that he played okay, okay, but
not enough to elevate this team to a win.
Speaker 1 (35:28):
I can respect that you saved yourself from being a
full on heel. On today's Wes and Walker, a No
Rolls Friday coming up next, it's the first part of
the show. Wes Bryant, he joins us after the break
to talk about USF Miami. He's doing the sideline down
there this weekend, and he'll talk a little bit more
about what we saw from wake Forest last night. The
(35:49):
rest of the ACC slate over the weekend, we'll get
to all of it. Wes Bryant joins us next Sports
Radio ninety two to seven WFNZ. One more segment to
go in the twelve o'clock hour on Western Walker Sports
Radio ninety two seven w FNZ, and let's go to
the guest line. Now you can get used to this
on Fridays West not being in the Chandler VAULTA studios,
(36:12):
but he is on the guest line and he is
talking to us from a sideline somewhere in the college
football world. This weekend, he's going to be on the
Miami sidelines as the Hurricanes welcome South Florida, a five
eighteen matchup. Gonna be awesome for thirty kick on the
ced W Wes, we appreciate it, man. How are you doing?
Speaker 4 (36:32):
What going on? Man?
Speaker 7 (36:33):
Just leaving the mall, you know, the state, a little lunch,
watching some sugar Banny here with potentially his mail order bride,
taking some picture that he's probably think copious amounts of money.
But that's where we are.
Speaker 1 (36:49):
I thought, are you in Chapel Hill? I thought you
were in Miami? And I thought, ah, oh, you're saying
it's not Bill Belichick it Oh that's my fault. Man. Anyway,
I bet that's a sight to behold Wes Bryant from
a mall. Not on the sidelines yet, but from a
mall down in South Beach. Okay, well, let's just go
ahead and get the pain out of the way. West.
(37:10):
What were your thoughts on last night's Wake Forest loss
to NC State after the wolf Pack rallied and ended
up beating your decks?
Speaker 4 (37:18):
Well, you know, I was cautious for the optimistic. I
want to see the game began with the kick retiring,
because I know as soon as he hit that freest
that he was good to go, that he was on
death And color me shot at the way Robbie Anderson
played early in this matchup. I did not expect him
to play as well as he did in the first fact.
Speaker 5 (37:40):
But you know, I've experienced enough of a playing and as.
Speaker 4 (37:43):
A spectator to know what Wake Forest football. Nothing is
ever in the bag, nothing's ever safe if I just
continue to stay in the fight. And it just felt
like that NC State adjusted and Wake couldn't adjust to
their adjustments. And the main thing about the game was
that State took away the run and once they were
able to bottle up of DeMont Clayborne, that really kind
(38:07):
of exposed this offense. As far as the offensive line,
they did not play greats last night run blocking or
past protection, and so then you know, Robbie Anderson starts
to get exposed a little bit, and then you had
a result that you had a defense break down, because
I mean, when you go six seven, eight drives that
you can't convert a first down, I mean you can
(38:28):
have the eighty five bear they're going to struggle at
some point because of fatigue and also the talent gap,
no pass rushoot wait for us, which always seems to
be an mo for the Deeks.
Speaker 5 (38:39):
Man.
Speaker 4 (38:39):
So you know, I was hopeful. I wanted to win.
But you know, once reality set in and I started
really seeing the flaws for what they were, I wasn't
too upset.
Speaker 1 (38:48):
I really thought Trumphy was gonna have to texture for
a while. Man, I thought you were about to get that.
Speaker 4 (38:52):
Tip you did.
Speaker 8 (38:52):
I know, you guys all of a sudden, now, I said,
I know these guys are thinking right now, man, the
Deeks are about to pull this ding off. I mean
they had it going, man, but turn over hurt and then,
like I said, they just weren't ever able to kind
of I wish they would have been able to keep
applying pressure.
Speaker 4 (39:06):
But I know you were excited because your boy CJ.
Bases looks fantastic. He throws with so much anticipation and
he really plays like a pro. That's the type of
quarterback play that you're talking about from an athletic kid.
He uses his seat and yeah resort and he reads
that field walker. Like I said, I thank you on
the someth man. I think this kid can certainly develop
(39:28):
into a first round pick. The way that he plays
the game and the way he throws with anticipation.
Speaker 1 (39:32):
Well, I continue to be wowed by his fluidity at
that kind of height, Like he does not move around
like some awkward six seven quarterbacks usually do. He's not
a statue man. And some of the arm angles too,
are fun to watch from him. So that's SENC Staates QB.
We've talked a lot about CJ. Bailey. I want to
ask you this, Are you a bigger fan of Robbie
Ashford after what he did last night?
Speaker 5 (39:53):
No?
Speaker 4 (39:54):
Because, like I said, it looked good for a little while,
but once it came down to putting the game on him,
his showed us to be able to convert some third downs.
I just felt like, you know, he just gets very
erratic as a pastor, and that's exactly what you expect.
Speaker 5 (40:08):
Man.
Speaker 4 (40:08):
He's like me as a bowler. I'm either gonna play
the first half of the game really well and then
fall off, or I'm gonna be terrible at the beginning
and get it together at the end. And it's just
kind of where we are with Robbie Ashberg, you know.
And so he's to me a sea level quarterback right
now that you can get some flashes like we did,
(40:30):
because as I said, coming into the game last night,
and I said, kin he hit a couple of throws
because I felt like they would get I felt like
the keys to winning was to get Clayborne going to
scare them enough to where he could get some defined reads.
Because I do like his deep bar. I think he
throws a really good deep boom. But I mean when
you miss routine throws like the one spring out he
(40:52):
had to the right sideline, the guy's just standing there
in his zone. You throw it and receive it as
the slide out of downs to catch it and stuff.
Those are the type of throws that you know, if
you want to be a quarterback worth your salt, and
you have to make And so that's the thing about
him that just continues to worry me. Man. And at
this point, looking at the rest of the ACC slate,
I'm not sure how confident I feel about the deeps
(41:15):
seeing a victory really anywhere on the ACCT schedule.
Speaker 1 (41:19):
Wes Bryant of the ACC Digital Network also or can
the sidelines on CW this game, he's in Miami this weekend,
I should say he's in Miami as the Kinges host
us F and again the Bulls are ranked eighteenth in
the country. Wes, how much of a shot do you
give the Bulls to win this game?
Speaker 4 (41:36):
Man? It's so interesting to me because I always look
at the lines and I say, all right, what is
Vegas trying to tell me? I feel like with seventeen
and a half, they feel like that Miami's gonna stomp
on it. So as much as I feel like it
just couldn't be a good game, I feel like the
Kings can come out dominate because they certainly have Miami's attention.
And last year this was a team that they gave
the Kings a hard time as well. But this year
(41:58):
I feel like that miami Their attention has been gotten
by these Golden Bulls because of the way that they
have come in and they've beaten two ranked teams in
a row. So for Mario Cristoball, his job has been
easy this week. Normally, these types of games, you try
to sit down and manu facture anything that you can
and say, hey, guys, these guys can beat you. I'm
(42:18):
telling you they can beat you. You guys are not
listening to me. They can beat you. But now all
he has to do is put the tape on and say, okay, yeah.
Borida State thought they were gonna win, Look what happened
to them. Florida Gators thought they were gonna win at home.
Look what happened to them. So I think for Miami,
if they have ambitions of being a college football team
right in the wrongs from last year, then I think
that their tension certainly is on South Florida. So I
(42:40):
think that they will get a spirited effort from Miami.
Speaker 1 (42:44):
Do you think Clemson or Miami has more pressure to
win this weekend?
Speaker 4 (42:48):
The Clemson tickers, no doubt about it, because I think
was Miami right now. You've seen enough from them. You've
seen their weapons play like the weapons they bill to be.
Whether they are new guys like a Malacha, Tony or
or you know Carson Back, those guys have been pretty
much as Avatar so far, CJ. Daniels. The list goes
on that defense newly, you know, revamped over the off
(43:11):
season with Mesador and Rubing Bang. I mean those guys
have been, like I said, as they have been built
to be preseason, whereas Clemson's guys. As I'm said, it
just continues to feel like that these are guys who
look at their press clippings all year and feel like
the teams are supposed to just die down and lay
down to them because they're the mighty Clemson Tigers that
(43:32):
are national championship favorite. So and I think that both
teams have tough task this weekend, but Clemson, I think
has the tougher task because, as I say, how sick
and tired is Georgia Tech losing nine hour rows to them?
They get them at home. This is one of the
best teams they've had quite sometime, and I think they
are ready.
Speaker 5 (43:50):
And juiced and they want every part.
Speaker 4 (43:52):
Of this matchup to be able to knock the Clemson
team off. That you certainly smell blood in the water
after their first two inforts.
Speaker 7 (43:59):
Of the season.
Speaker 1 (44:00):
Wes Bryant joining us on his own show just via
the guest line. This time he's down to Miami, getting
ready to report from the sidelines the Canes Bulls game
this weekend. Last couple of questions, can North Carolina do
anything this weekend against Richmond to get fans back or
get you back? I don't even know how far away
you are from some sort of North Carolina fandom that
(44:20):
you adopted this year. What can they do against Richmond
to restore some faith in them.
Speaker 4 (44:26):
I think the at least need to try to hit
the forty point the area this weekend. I think can
you get a win by I would say a minimum
of four attention, I think that's probably a baseline. Can
you win by twenty eight or ben and then, like
I said on the scoreboard, can you hit forty points?
Can Gillo Lopez have one of those games where he
potentially goes for two hundred and fifty plus yards passing,
(44:48):
maybe he rushes for you know, between fifteen and seventy yards,
where he really comes out, shows you, hey, this guy's
this guy's got potential. Man not going to get a
lot of respect because of what we've seen so far
and because it is Richmond. But I think the Carolina
Steel you've got to be dominant in some shape or
form here. Man, you held Charlotte to you know, three
(45:10):
points in this game. So the defense just needs to
continue to do what they're doing. But offensively, man, I
think you need to at least hit a forty one,
and I mean even then I don't know how spectacular
you feel it, right, I think you probably want fifty
of No forty burger would be no.
Speaker 1 (45:27):
I hear you speaking of burgers. Are we gonna eat better,
more appropriate food in this destination South Beach or are
you just going to go for like I don't know,
Italian food again.
Speaker 4 (45:39):
I'm going to try my best to get this thing done.
And I've got two days, you know, and I've got
a lot around me. I tried to go local just now,
but we had a couple of complications, so you know,
don't kill me. I just settled for to Poteland because
I didn't feel like the hansle of what was going
on and said restaurant. I went and ate at the
mall food court because obviously I didn't know that's where
(46:02):
everything was. But then once I went, because it was
a local spot, I was trying to go to end
the mall, and then once I went to the food court,
I saw all the places there. So, like I said,
I had a little bit of a slightly annoying experience.
I just said, never.
Speaker 5 (46:14):
Mind, I'm gonna go for what I know and just
get your out.
Speaker 4 (46:18):
Like but tonight for dinner, we'll be trying to get
something authentically.
Speaker 1 (46:24):
You can be I heard trying. I didn't hear. I'm
going to I heard trying, which scares me just a
little bit. Last question, are you gonna wear shorts this weekend?
Speaker 5 (46:32):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (46:32):

the jungle.
