Speaker 1 (00:08):
Only Sports Radio ninety two point seven AFM. We've got
a ufn C five. He's the West and Walker Show.
Even in crowd knows what's coming there.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
I actually don't know what's coming up next. It's a
weird show today because we're here at Curry Arena, Queen's
University Hornets are hosting media day. So we have already
a couple of interviews in the bag. We'll play a
little bit later with some high profile guys Charles Lee,
Brandon Miller.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
Excellent interviews.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
Perhaps you want to reprieve from Carolina Panthers discourse. We
don't necessarily have that luxury all the time.

Speaker 3 (00:46):
We do not. We have a few segments.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
We're going to take a break from Carolina Panthers discourse,
but we got to get to a lot of it.
I don't know what to expect from today, but who
Buddy Man, just another ugly, ugly day and Charlotte portray.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
But I want to know what we're going to say.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
Welcome now, Shroppy before we hopped on said get ready
for a wild day from the fandual text line, and
of course I expected nothing different. Troppy helping us back
at the Chandler vaulta studio Flounder on site with us
being our sound engineer and a renaissance man. So we
appreciate everybody helping us, and we appreciate everybody listening to
us in the midday.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
WESN.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
Walker Sports Radio ninety two seven WFNZ. If you want
to be one of them wild ones on the FanDuel
text line, feel free to send almost whatever you want
to seven oh four five seven oh ninety six, ten,
seven oh four five seven oh ninety six, ten, and
again we will give you that break because we will
have Charles Lee. We're gonna play that interview with looks

(01:42):
like at one twenty Trey Man tricky Tray, as Charles
Lee called him, He's.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
Supposed to you out like that's a tricky tray.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
He's gonna be talking with us at twelve fifteen. Brandon Miller,
I think we're gonna schedule that interview for twelve forty five,
so we're gonna talk a lot of panthers, but I
don't know if we'll be talking about it at twenty
minutes at a time. Just again, this is one of
those where we can be mad, we can vent for
a little while, and then we can take a step

(02:11):
back and then try to allow a little hope into
our lives, like the beginning of a hornet season. And
then we can go back, and then we can rail
on Dave Canalis and questionable play calling, and we can
rail on Bryce Young if you want to. We have
a lot of interesting conversations to have today on West
and Walker.

Speaker 3 (02:26):
So why wait anymore. Let's get to it, Shroppy.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
He's the bus driver today, He's got his license dusted off.
He's ready to go. Let's open up the doors. Let's
pull up to the scene, shrop dog. Let's get off
the bus.

Speaker 3 (02:37):
We looked good getting off the bus.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
Got West after beating the Falcons thirty to nothing, and
we were all feeling good. Panthers got beat down by
the New England Patriots on the road forty two to thirteen.
I tweeted out after a beautiful opening that scored six points.

(03:01):
Excellent job by Dave Canallis saw it looks great, awesome stuff. Man,
I'm ready to roll. They showed the graphic of the
Panthers outscoring their opponents in the last six seven quarters
something like fifty.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
Nine whatever it was.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
To Zilch, that number is a little closer now after
they allowed forty two on an answered points to New England.
Who's a team that was one and two coming in
now they're two and two after that big time victory
over Carolina. Just your thoughts, it's a blank canvas, Wes,
wherever you want to go, here's the steering wheel. What
are your thoughts after watching the Panthers lose the way

(03:37):
they did?

Speaker 3 (03:38):
All right?

Speaker 4 (03:38):
So you know, last week we talked about the fact
that just how bad that Michael Pennix played, and we
know that that contributed heavily to the way last week's
game went. Then I feel confident at the Panthers, but
win this game. I thought if they did, they were
going to squeak out one, and I actually thought that
they had a real shot. If you would have asked
me a prediction before the game, I probably would have

(04:00):
said Panthers in a very close margin. But then to
see what happened, it was shocking. I'll be frank. I
did not expect for the Panthers to lose this way.
It was an all three phases type of deal, and
it was kind of like the reverse of last week
to where they outgained the team and all of that,
but they still got beat by a significant margin. But

(04:22):
special teams played a huge part in this thing. Drake
May was super efficient. He didn't have to do much
more than what he did and he was still pretty
good on the day. But the Patriots, they just gave
them a sound beating. And it is a shocking, shocking
thing for Panthers fans because now I said unequivocally, you
know that you are, you know, one of the bottom
teams in the league now, and just how much work

(04:44):
you have to do after a loss like this. Now
it doesn't necessarily mean all us lost because you talk
about two extremes. Right last week we had people talking
about could this team finished second in the NFC South,
could they do this? Could they do that? And I said,
you know, it's a week two week league. And now
after what has happened this week, the glooming doom has
returned times ten from what it was after the loss

(05:05):
to the car erased, completely, erased any good will that
you built me after that victory.

Speaker 3 (05:10):
And I don't want to put that lightly any way.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
There is not one sliver of hopes it's all gone
that you are allowed to feel after that win.

Speaker 3 (05:20):
Thirty to nothing against the Falcons. All of it's erased.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
After the way you perform against New England, after the
first drive, where you think that might just be the
cherry on top of some goodwill they built, it's all gone.

Speaker 3 (05:30):
Here's what they've done.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
They've made it impossible to feel good as a fan
of this team because the bottom could fall out immediately
after experiencing success. So, now, if you win a game,
Let's say the Panthers come back. Let's say the Panthers
against Miami. It doesn't feel like they're going to but
just stick with me for a moment. Okay, Let's say
the Panthers actually do beat Miami, because Miami is a

(05:53):
bad football team, straight up. Let's say they beat Miami
by fourteen. Let's say they beat them by double digits
at home. Now, we just can't experience all the success
that that game gave us because the bottom could completely
fall out. That's a dangerous place to be, and to
be honest with you, if you're David Tepper, if you're
Dave Canalis, if you're anybody over there at the Panthers organization,
and all you want is momentum, all you want is goodwill,

(06:18):
All the hope from your fan base, and nobody's feeling
it even after a double digit victory. You have made
that bed for all of us to lay in, and
that's real. That's really frustrating. So now not only do
we feel terrible after that loss to New England, now
we're not allowed to feel good feelings even after a
potential double digit victory because it could fall all the

(06:39):
way off of a cliff with your next performance.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
Nobody knows what to expect. The identity isn't there.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
Dave Canalis himself is answering questions afterwards, saying, we got
to figure out what kind of football team we want
to be. I'd like to be at least a mediocre one,
but we can't be that if you're gonna go one
in three lose by a margin of victory consistent with
eighteen points. That's what's happened with Dave can over his losses.
When he loses man, they lose big. I have the
last thing before I pass it off to you again.

(07:06):
I've defended Dave Canalis a decent amount, I would say more.
I think you and I are kind of in the
same boat to some degree where we've defended Dave Canalis
a decent amount compared to other Panthers fans when trying
to figure out what the real problem is with this team.
I think this is the worst game I've ever seen
Dave Canalis coach since he became head coach of Carolina.
I didn't understand play calling at all. I don't think

(07:27):
it's just an easy button to press at this point.
I hate playing conservatively, running the football, running draws on
third and fifteens. I hate not going for it. I
hate hunting for fifty five yard field goals. Even if
Ryan Fitzpatrick Fitzgerald, I should say, showed you as to
why you might not be going for it. Everything was
a complete mess, and Dave is right about one thing.

(07:49):
After the game. It all falls on him at this one.
I am looking at you, Dave. Yeah, I mean you
definitely have to look at him. And also there's so
much blame to go around at this point. And at
the end of the day, I said in the preseason
that this was a roster of hope. There were a
lot of, you know, both way variables going with a
lot of the players on this roster.

Speaker 4 (08:10):
There aren't many constants. And so that's the thing is
that you see that this is a severely flawed football team.
The coaching, the play calling being conservative, all of those things.
But when you don't have the guys out there that
can make a difference for you, it's gonna make it
hard to compete against anybody. And we know that in
the league that anybody can rise up and be anybody

(08:31):
on a given day. We saw the Dallas Cowboys push
the Green Bay Packers last night to a tie in
the game that a lot of people thought that the
Cowboys were gonna get absolutely crushed, and they come out
and play them tooth and nail. And so that's the thing, man,
This roster is severely devoid of talent. We're gonna get
into it as the show goes along as far as
how you can fix that. But now this is two

(08:52):
offseasons and two drafts now to where your roster isn't
looking much better than it looked the year before. And
so they've got a lot of answers, a lot of
grocery shopping and do to be able to turn this
thing around, man, because it is just a very, very
flawed roster. And we saw that yesterday going up against
another team led by a young quarterback, and Drake made
that has a lot of young pieces that absolutely destroyed them.

(09:15):
You're losing belief. That's what's happening right now.

Speaker 2 (09:19):
Panthers fans are texting us, they're calling in, They're going
to Twitter, they're going to Facebook, whatever publication, whatever social
media format they can get to to vent, they're going
to it and saying, I don't know if I can
trust this quarterback, which we'll have a bright showing conversation.
I don't know if I can trust this coaching staff.
They've not been trusting ownership for quite some time, and

(09:39):
yet you're seeing all the signs of that again.

Speaker 3 (09:41):
West.

Speaker 2 (09:41):
At the beginning of this year, the fan base request
was not crazy. It was okay to ask for improvement.
It was okay to see if the Hornets could go
up the escalator and see if they could end this
season in a.

Speaker 3 (09:55):
Different place from where they started it.

Speaker 2 (09:56):
Yes, but really they've gotten worse since the second half
of last year. A lot of that is because of injury.
I'm not trying to completely negate some of the things,
some of the flaws that Dave Canalis and company are
working against, but you can't get beat that badly and
Look that fundamentally I don't know what the word is,
look that fundamentally lost misdirection completely throwing off your young edges.

(10:18):
And they are young, like you got to see why
prince lely Umam Yellen is playing in his fourth ever game.
And same thing with Nick Gorton with some of those
guys being injured. Here's the real concern for me too, though.
Just last thing here, Panthers had zero turnovers in this game. Man,
we can't even blame that. It's not like Bryce Young
was driving and then just lost the football on the

(10:39):
goal line. He didn't lose the football in field goal zone.
He didn't lose the he didn't throw an interception at
key moments.

Speaker 3 (10:46):
You just got to beat down.

Speaker 2 (10:48):
The Patriots beat you that badly without forcing any turnovers whatsoever.
So that says to me that you just that's who
you are at this point, Like that's what you do.

Speaker 3 (10:59):
Jacksonville.

Speaker 2 (11:00):
You had a couple bad turnovers and it's crushing, right
if it's all about the ball.

Speaker 3 (11:04):
Took You took care of the ball quite a bit
in this one.

Speaker 2 (11:07):
Yeah, And yet it's one of the worst losses that
I can remember in the Canalis era and the problem
is there's plenty of them to choose.

Speaker 4 (11:13):
Yeah, and I mean special teams was a huge part
of it. Like I said, you never pay attention to
special teams until you have to pay attention to special teams.
And so we know how big that was in this game.
And then you look at the fact that New England
was a team that was middle of the pack as
far as getting explosive plays. Well, they come out yesterday
they had seven total plays of twenty plus yards and

(11:35):
so that was a huge part of this game as well.

Speaker 3 (11:38):
And that's the thing that's disheartening too.

Speaker 4 (11:40):
A lot of the goodwill for this defense when you
look at the numbers, Yes, the Panthers did out gain them,
but the Patriots got the bigger amount of explosive plays
to help scoring become easier for them. And when you
look at this Panthers offense and what you're going to
be looking for going forward is how can you get
more explosive It's a place to make it easier on yourself.

(12:02):
There's nothing worse than have to sit and watch a
plotting offense that's got to take ten, twelve, fifteen plays
to be able to get down the field to your
point about a lot of the running that was going
on and how conservative the play column was. And that
was a huge difference yesterday, was that New England was
hitting on a lot of big plays. The especial teams
was huge and defensively man. Like I said, they came

(12:22):
to play and they were able to keep Carolina and.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
Chick Okay, this is one of those times where we
say we're going to take a break. We promised you
Trey Man at twelve fifteen.

Speaker 3 (12:30):
Good news for you. It's twelve fourteen.

Speaker 2 (12:32):
So shop, let's bring down the get off the bus bed,
and then we'll transition into some Charlotte Hornets conversation right
here with Trey Man joining us on Western Walker Sports
Radio ninety two seven WFNZ. Again, we're live from Curry
Arena for Hornets Media Day, and we are meandering in
and out of Panthers and Hornets talk, and this time
we'll get to talk about the team that has provided
a little bit of hope because of what they did

(12:53):
this offseason. One move they made this offseason was bring
back a fan favorite, Trey Man. We appreciate the time, man,
How are you doing?

Speaker 3 (13:00):
Nah? I appreciate you all. I'm doing good. Well.

Speaker 2 (13:02):
I want to talk about this offseason for you specifically
because it was interesting after having a great what was
it thirteen games you played last year?

Speaker 3 (13:10):
It was great, like we were often rolling.

Speaker 2 (13:12):
It looked awesome, and then you suffer the unfortunate injury
and then you're not back. People still wanted you here
pretty badly. Just real quickly, What was it like for
you to have such a great reception from the fan
base like they wanted you, man?

Speaker 3 (13:24):
I imagine it has to feel pretty good.

Speaker 5 (13:25):
Yeah, I mean, it's love. I've seen all the comments.
You know, I'm on social media, so I saw them
showing love. You know, they was also concerned, like wanting
to know, like what was going on and stuff like that.
So you know, it's love and it go both ways.
I love the fans and you know, hopefully we can
give them something to be excited for this year.

Speaker 3 (13:42):
How are you? How are you feeling? Man? Health wise?

Speaker 2 (13:44):
Are you one hundred percent right now? Will you be
one hundred percent by training camp? How's the health status
of you?

Speaker 3 (13:50):
I'm one hundred and ten percent right now. Love it?

Speaker 5 (13:52):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (13:53):
Good?

Speaker 2 (13:54):
Well, and last thing for it, West you can take over, Like,
how was it going through rehab this year because it's
a long process.

Speaker 3 (14:01):
Man.

Speaker 2 (14:01):
We just talked about this with Brandon. I don't think
people understand just how difficult rehab is, especially with some
of the injuries that keep you out for an entire season.
What were those challenges for you, like going through the
adversity that you did.

Speaker 3 (14:13):
Oh, it was tough, man.

Speaker 5 (14:16):
I don't really want to get too in detail of
what was going on, but it was tough mentally and physically.

Speaker 3 (14:23):
But you know, I feel better from it.

Speaker 5 (14:25):
I've learned a lot about my body, about you know, myself,
ways to take care of myself, so things going to.

Speaker 3 (14:30):
Help in the long run. But it was definitely a lot.

Speaker 4 (14:32):
Yeah, Tray, I was going to ask you what was
some of the positives though that you took away during
the time off. What were you able to see were
you able to see the game differently or what were
some of those things you were able to add?

Speaker 3 (14:42):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (14:43):
I was definitely able to watch games and not look
for myself. So you know, when you're doing that, you
can see more of the games, see more of your team,
and it helped that way.

Speaker 3 (14:51):
And then just being a pro.

Speaker 5 (14:54):
You know, I'd rather this happened now than like you
know later on where I'm you know older, you know,
back end of my career. So I feel I'm young still,
and you know, it was easy for me to you know,
get back healthy.

Speaker 4 (15:07):
Was one of the things that you really look forward
to is the fact that, Man, you've come here and
it's just been like just the freedom that you've gotten
coming to Charlotte. Man, you were able to unlock Trey
Man the player. Yeah, no, Trey Man the player and
Trey Man a person. Really just like from the day
I came in and then we got the new coaching
staff and new front office and things like that, they

(15:28):
just allowed me to be me. I came in, you know,
with my swagger and they didn't say nothing. They actually
it was a day where I didn't have like something
on a coach was like yo, where Trey Man, you know,
they feel good to have that.

Speaker 5 (15:41):
People accept you for who you are and then you
know push you to be that and you know, let
you do it. So it feels super good.

Speaker 4 (15:46):
Speaking of having that on. I see you a lot
of times, man, with the attire. It takes me back
to the college day. Okay, A lot of stuff that
I was bands stuff oversize then I'm sure it's the
jerseys all that. What bought that from a young cat
like yourself to be so inspired by that.

Speaker 5 (16:04):
I just always liked older players like MJ my favorite,
you know, AI second, and it started with my dad
then with my dad favorite players, so like I wasn't
able to watch him, but growing up, that's all I
watched on YouTube was AI and MJ. And then I
would just say, like I wanted to be different in
my way, Like I know people done it before in

(16:26):
the past, like two thousands whatever, but I feel like
the game now is going to shorter shorts, tighter jerseys,
and you know, I just didn't feel comfortable in that.
So I was I was doing it in OKC, but
I just wasn't playing, so nobody saw it. And then
when I got here, it was just like go betray Man.
And you know, it really came from from just doing that.
And I saw Tracy McGrady. I saw a picture of

(16:48):
him on Instagram. I was like, damn, it's kind of dope.
So I was like, I want to try. I talked
to my friends. It was like, no, I don't think
you should do it.

Speaker 3 (16:55):
I just went out it.

Speaker 2 (16:57):
What was he talking about the suit because the team
acts sued I would I buy as well suit? Yeah,
because everything else is phenomenal. I don't know about the
t Bax suit though, where like he's swimming in going.

Speaker 4 (17:08):
To the phone and show you ten to twelve pictures
from college and you'd be like, Yep, that's that's what
I like.

Speaker 3 (17:12):
Do rag like they have the two colored ones.

Speaker 2 (17:14):
The jabosh I mean, just not to belabor the point, man,
but like everybody accepted that, Like there wasn't anything against
Trey Man doing what he was doing, wearing that stuff.
Everybody didn't like it, they loved it, which I have
to imagine, like it was cool for us just as
Hornets fans. Yeah, I want to ask you about the comparisons,
because I know it's a fine line of paying homage

(17:35):
to some of those favorite players of your past but
also being who Trey Man is specifically. So do you
welcome the tray I nicknames? Do you welcome some of
the Allen iverson comparisons? Do you like where it is
now or do you kind of want to get away
from it?

Speaker 3 (17:49):
I do want to make it like I'm cool with it.

Speaker 5 (17:51):
It's great to be able to be like on the same,
like even though I don't think our game is the same.
But people to mention me with AI, even though they're
not saying we play like like that, just to be
in the same sentence.

Speaker 3 (18:01):
It's cool because here a legend.

Speaker 5 (18:03):
But I want to make it clear, like it's not
trying to be AI, like it came from Tracy McGrady,
Like I said, the picture that I did came from
Tracy McGrady. And then you know, I've been wearing the
arm band since my rookie year.

Speaker 3 (18:18):
The headband.

Speaker 5 (18:19):
I didn't have the braids, but once I got the braids,
you know, you got to wear the headband with the braids,
and like, you know, I can see if I went
the arm like I know AI, I know what he wore,
but it is not that so.

Speaker 3 (18:30):
We need to back off maybe a tiny bet. It's cool,
Like it's cool for real.

Speaker 4 (18:34):
I was gonna ask you how hard is some of
that stuff to find, because I've seen with the fool
booth jerseys and stuff like that, like that stuff isn't
easy to find anymore.

Speaker 5 (18:41):
I say, I found most of my stuff in New York.
New York has like some some spots that has the
older stuff and when we go play preseason, that's why
I'm gonna stop by, you know, re up on some stuff.
But the vintage stores around here. Then we went on
away games, like all the venture stores for real?

Speaker 3 (18:58):
What what what does your card look like on Mitchell
Nests right now? What does your cart? What does your
online cart look like?

Speaker 2 (19:03):
For some of those New York shops you go to, Like, okay,
we're going to New York at this moment in time,
let me go ahead and stock.

Speaker 3 (19:08):
Op Yeah, no, michelin ness.

Speaker 5 (19:10):
Where was it Boston maybe or Philly, Philly, Philly in Philly, Yeah,
it wasn't online, but I went there and I bought
a couple of jerseys.

Speaker 4 (19:20):
What's your favorite piece of I guess clothing that you
have from that? Like what did you like the most?
Was it kind of like the footbloe jersey or was
it the Jeebo jeans? Or like, what is you like
the most?

Speaker 3 (19:31):
The Jabo jeans? For sure?

Speaker 5 (19:33):
You know that that was something I saw my dad wearing,
and like, back then, I didn't think it was that cool,
but you know now it's like my dad was wearing
nose so it's cool that they still have and I
can wear.

Speaker 2 (19:42):
I like the idea of being a trendsetter but getting
out because we know history repeats itself. Trey Man is
ahead of history repeating itself and I love to see it.

Speaker 3 (19:51):
Trey Man joining us here. I'm not gonna lie.

Speaker 5 (19:53):
I've seen a whole bunch of like media days where
you know, college kids, high school kids are wearing bag
ear like uniforms. Like understand the fashion stuff where people
been wearing the bag of your pants, but media days,
I've been seeing a lot of baggage jerseys and stuff.

Speaker 2 (20:07):
Well I was I remember Jalen Rose talked about this
right fab five trying to find the triple XL shorts
because I was the same way in high school. Now
that was more mid two thousands for me, so that
was the thing. But these tight shorts, yeah, John stocked
in it.

Speaker 3 (20:19):
I can't. I know it doesn't. It didn't feel right
for you to have compressions got.

Speaker 2 (20:25):
Too and we can see them with hows are we
can see him. It's trade Man joined us here on WESN.

Speaker 3 (20:29):
Walker.

Speaker 2 (20:30):
I wanted to get back to just a little bit
of the contract negotiation because Trey.

Speaker 3 (20:34):
We wanted you.

Speaker 2 (20:34):
We didn't know if you were going to be back,
Like it felt like there was a real shot that
you would leave the city. How real did that possibility
get when you your agent and the Hornets are negotiating coming
back to the Queen City.

Speaker 5 (20:46):
Yeah, it was definitely real. You know, it's negotiation, so
like we have our opinions, you know, Jeff in them
had their opinions. But at the end of the day,
for me, it was about getting on the same page,
and I feel.

Speaker 3 (20:59):
Like we did that. But it definitely was a real shot.

Speaker 5 (21:02):
Anytime you know, somebody's in that position, it's going to
be a real shot, and it's challenged, especially having the
season that I had where you know, I didn't play
the whole season and stuff like that, so it was tough.

Speaker 2 (21:11):
It looked to me from AFAR, Well, we don't have
any inside information on it, but they just signed guard
after guard after guard and you hadn't been signed yet.
They draft guards, and it's like, man, I don't know,
Like I thought that was more incentive to bring you back,
just to have all these fun basketball players that can
handle the rock. But they did bring you back, and
so it did look like it was a real possibility.

(21:32):
What were your thoughts going and not to getting your thoughts.
I don't want to be like that, but I guess
my point is, what's it like sharing the court with
those guys, Like, how do you envision your role playing
alongside other dudes that also can handle the basketball and
be these spark plugs off of the bench or just
starting straight up?

Speaker 3 (21:48):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (21:48):
I mean, at the end of the day, I feel
like we all want to win, and the better players, Like,
the more players you have, I feel like you have
a better chance of winning. So you know, I wasn't
upset at all at anything any of the signs, any
of the you know, drafts. I actually liked it. I
came to the workouts and I felt like we made
the right picks. But nah, I'm a super I'm super

(22:09):
excited to share to court with them.

Speaker 3 (22:10):
You know.

Speaker 5 (22:11):
I feel like we add to each other, we can
make each other better, and you know, I'm just ready
to get going.

Speaker 3 (22:15):
Yeah, because I was going to ask you about that.

Speaker 4 (22:17):
Is there any like, man, these guys are gonna maybe
cut into some of what I was doing before this,
or like you just a team guy, Like whatever.

Speaker 3 (22:25):
Works, whatever, whatever works.

Speaker 5 (22:27):
I feel like it's all on God's timing, Like when
it's my time. It'll be my time. And you know
I'm heavy in that. So, uh, they're here for a reason.
I'm here for a reason, and I'm just I'm just
ready to play.

Speaker 4 (22:39):
And I was going to ask you man about the workouts.
Just how excited are you with what you've seen with
everybody available and everybody playing.

Speaker 3 (22:45):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (22:45):
No, it's good to have everybody, you know playing Like
that's something that people don't really look at, but like
going into training camp healthy is like a good thing
to have. Not a lot of teams have that, So
you know, we're going into training camp healthy. We competed
for the last month and I think we look good.
We made some adjustments for the offense and things like that.

(23:05):
So super excited.

Speaker 2 (23:06):
All right, last question before we gets you out of here.
Imagine you're a little familiar with Curry Arena. Your brother
plays here. He's back. I do color for Queens. Getting
to call NAS's games a lot of fun to watch
him sky for some of these dunks.

Speaker 3 (23:19):
Counts. Who's the better athlete? Man? Talk to me. I'll
give it to him, but I'm not gonna lie. He longer.

Speaker 5 (23:28):
So like he is the stuff that he does, he
don't really need a lot of athleticism. Like me, I'm six',
three not the longest, arm so LIKE i gotta really
jump to do.

Speaker 3 (23:37):
Stuff so But i'll give it to him.

Speaker 2 (23:40):
HIM a final final question, here what's your assessment on
him as a? Player, like what would your eval be
if you're A gm and you're going back and forth
on the contract. Negotiations what are some things that you
want him to work? On what are some things you
think he does? Well maxim?

Speaker 5 (23:53):
Ount, yeah, Contract and THEN i take now i'm, Playing
i'll say he's, Attic, like like everybody who see him
play can see that he's.

Speaker 3 (24:02):
Athletic he's a good.

Speaker 5 (24:04):
DEFENDER i feel like if he just knows what his
role could be at the next level and just lock into.

Speaker 6 (24:11):
That.

Speaker 5 (24:11):
Here it's hard when you're in college because it's different
roles and they're asking different. Things BUT i feel like
at the next level he could be an elite, defender you, know,
athletic finish around the. ROOM i think he, can you,
know work on his shot a little. Bit it's it's
come a long, way BUT i think he still got
some ways to. Go, so you, KNOW i think he's
in a really good spot right. Now and he can

(24:33):
only continue to get.

Speaker 3 (24:33):
Better all.

Speaker 2 (24:34):
Right we got both The man brothers here And charlotte
got us ON Wesn walker fan favorite joining us On

Speaker 2 (25:08):
Arena queen's Hosting Hornets Media, day about to start THE nba,
season AND i know a lot of football fans around
here are.

Speaker 3 (25:14):
Ready ready right now to start THE nba.

Speaker 2 (25:17):
Season after watching The panthers get beat down yesterday forty
two to thirteen against The New England.

Speaker 3 (25:24):
Patriots it's rough out.

Speaker 2 (25:25):
Here let's read some fandual text line text seven oh
four five seven oh ninety six ten again seven oh,
four five seven oh ninety six. Ten there's a Lot
i'm going to try to organize these as best AS i.
Can i'm gonna try not to commit AN fcc violation
as much AS i. Can but here are a few
text messages seven oh four, five seven oh ninety six.
Ten Big Cat dan writes this in if a coach

(25:47):
studied your special teams for two, hours you might want
to change something that's, true real tar. Heel how Does
Nick scott have a, job let alone starting for The Carolina,
Panthers zach And. Miami y'all should have Known bryce was
a worthless Bust week, two twenty twenty three On Monday night.
Football what's happening is we're seeing a bunch of fans

(26:08):
blame different parties for. This dave Can, Alis, Guero, Averro Brce,
Young Nick, Scott, yeah you take your. Pick Dave tepper
has been blamed quite a bit and on different.

Speaker 3 (26:21):
Levels it's all.

Speaker 2 (26:22):
Nuanced but we're seeing a lot of the blame game
go to whoever you're mad at in the, moment and
then you. Transition But i'm not even saying that, jokingly
to be honest with. You fans are allowed to be mad.

Speaker 3 (26:32):
Today they.

Speaker 4 (26:33):
Are they, are and so one thing THAT i did, say,
though BECAUSE i knew what a lot of the. NAIRS
i was sitting there last, night counting the narratives one by,
one saying that they were going to Be and you,
Know i'm a big self awareness, guy and you KNOW
i love when people possessed that. Quality AND i, said
For panthers fans to sit, here AND i know they're
gonna Blame bryce and, yes he missed some throws, yesterday

(26:56):
there was no getting around that. One BUT i, said
for you to sit in and look at the graphic
that they put up Of Sam donald next To Baker,
mayfield and to see what those two young men are
doing once they got to places that had, talent plentiful
talent there for them to be able to throw the football.
TO i, SAID i hope that they're looking in the

(27:16):
mirror at what's gonna happen, next because If Bryce young
ends up going somewhere, else AND i said this the
other day on the, show BUT i, said If Bryce
young ends up going somewhere else that has plenty of,
talent he's gonna flourish just like those guys. Did and
then they're gonna be sitting here with another quarterback that's
going to be going through the same, things and they're
going to blame him and say that he's the reason
they're losing and things like, that and so it's an organizational.

(27:39):
Thing and you, know this is one of those deals
where it still feels like they're at ground zero right
now just as far as the talent and what they
need to.

Speaker 3 (27:50):
Do AND i won't.

Speaker 4 (27:50):
Necessarily say they're at, zero but there's still it feels
like they've got a ways to. Go where we felt
like after this offseason they really had a chance to
maybe talking about going up that escalator where you felt
like maybe they had a shot to be at least
at the middle of the escalator. Somewhere did you step
on that where it feels like now they just on
there and they just started and there are two or

(28:12):
three steps up now instead, of you, know where it
just felt like that they would have been a lot
more closer to the middle or to the.

Speaker 2 (28:20):
Top they're gonna they have a little bit of A
Bryce young, problem so it's more so of a talent around.
Them but here's WHERE i am With. BRYCE i would
say That bryce has not performed up to the level
THAT i would like him to this. YEAR i am
also one that believes better players around, him not as many,
injuries he would be playing better. Football, YES i Think
Dave canalis held him back in this game to a certain.

(28:41):
Extent maybe that's not. True help the team back And
bryce was a part of. That so you could Say
dave held back the entire team with his play, calling
which means he Held bryce, back he held some of
these other. Guys there is a lot of execution issues
Though Bryce young did mis throws. Yesterday T, mac a
guy that you KNOW i, love you got hold on
of that. FOOTBALL i, mean that is a even if
there was a penalty On New, england that can't be an.

(29:03):
Excuse that's a chunk play and you need all the
chunk plays you can. Get if you're not gonna Have
Jalen coker and you're not gonna have J. T. Sanders
we're looking to, you. MAN i know you got to
step up. Immediately it's Like Denzel washington and remember The
titans said my parents died AND i had nine brothers
and sisters and they needed me to step up right.

Speaker 3 (29:19):
AWAY i wasn't ready, yet BUT i had to. BE
i ONLY i only had seven.

Speaker 2 (29:23):
Seven but this is the, Thing team ac they need
you to catch everything within your. Vicinity he didn't do.
It And Chuba hubbard playing, injured, right he didn't get
as many. Carries so ric, o'dowdell we need you to step.
UP i don't understand The Berdie christiansen. Stuff Brady christensen
doesn't even get the replacement start Once Chandler zavola goes.

Speaker 3 (29:42):
Down Brandon.

Speaker 2 (29:43):
Walton Is Brady christensen the eleventh offensive lineman on this?

Speaker 3 (29:47):
Team and if, so why did you bring him?

Speaker 2 (29:50):
BACK i know it wasn't much, money BUT i just
the coaching, man IF i, guess AS i ramble on
my focal point right, here for this specific, game it
really does come down to coaching for. ME i hated
a lot of WHAT i, saw, MAN i really. DID
i hated the. RUNS i hated the conservativeness of it,
all like it has to be perfect every single play

(30:12):
for you to put together some ten play drive for
you to.

Speaker 3 (30:15):
Score you guys didn't turn it.

Speaker 2 (30:16):
Over you can't point to any massive mistake that threw
the whole game plan. Off you guys just got beat
defensively a, pharaoh like have your guys in better?

Speaker 4 (30:26):
Position it felt really. Bad, Yes, well the THING i
juxtaposed what you just said with as. Well it feels
like almost you've got to find solutions because you're the,
coach Right but If i'm sitting there and my quarterbacks
getting pressured on forty percent of his Dropbacks Christian barma
alone had five of, those THEN i look. Defensively you
only Pressured drake may on fourteen percent of his, dropbacks,

(30:48):
okay and the offensive line only gave up three total.
Pressures it's, like IF i can't be really good at
the fundamentals of this, deal it really just kind of
picks apart WHAT i can. Do it makes me so
limited as far as WHAT i could. DO i, mean
we'll talk about it in the campus, corner but they've.
Done WHEN i talk to him at halftime of the,
game he, said it's just as simple as our offensive

(31:09):
line versus their defensive. Line that was a difference in
the game in the. Trenches and so For carolina when
you start at the basic fundamental, level my quarterbacks getting
pressured on forty percent of his, throws we're not running
the ball at a high enough.

Speaker 3 (31:21):
Rate we'll stand behind the.

Speaker 4 (31:22):
Chains we don't have the personnel to dig us out
of some of those. Holes what CAN i do If
I'm Bryce young And i'm in a third and long
And i've got tetoroa but they are on. Him who
else AM i going to go to get me out
of that? Jam to where MAYBE i could throw something
up and take a little bit of a chance and
a guy's gonna make me, right or that running back

(31:42):
sometimes it can make me. Right, defensively same, thing where's
that guy on the defense, That, yeah if the rest
of the guys aren't getting, pressure he's going to be
the guy that's going to maybe start the party, off
so to. Speak, like from a fundamental, level this thing
just doesn't look, great and then it just continues with
the domino effect on all the other positions out.

Speaker 3 (32:01):
There and it's for the.

Speaker 4 (32:02):
Coaches i'm not giving them excuses at, all but it's, like, Good, Lloyd.

Speaker 2 (32:08):
LOOK i understand that BECAUSE i do try to come
at this logically as much AS i possibly, can And
i've Defended Dave canalis in this coaching staff a decent.
AMOUNT i thought the game management yesterday was pretty, terrible
and here's SOMETHING i think needs to be. FIXED i
don't understand why this team doesn't have a sense of
urgency on plays that are questionable that are in your.
Favor so we need to snap the freaking football right
now so that you can take advantage of whatever that

(32:30):
fifty to fifty call, was or at the end of these,
halftimes like at the end of the quarter or not
the end of the quarter. Basketball we're talking football, here
but at the end of the, half let's try to.
Score let's actually get up to the line of scrimmage
with some sense of. Urgency we had the wide receivers
confused on what they were supposed to do to the right,
side And bryce is telling you to do this and

(32:50):
that it's really weird and you just wanted to be.
Fixed from a coaching, standpoint should we take a quick?
Break thumbs, up thumbs, Down we will take a quick,
break will come. Back Conka, Nipple Charlotte Hornet's cookie extraordinary
expected to join us in just a. Moment we'll get
to all of that coming up. Next Sports radied ninety
two to SEVEN, Wfnz Western Walker Sports radio ninety two

(33:24):
to SEVEN. Wfnz appreciate everybody joining us On Hornets Media
day As Queen's university hosts everybody around. Here Brandon miller
having an interview with. Him we'll play a little bit.
Later same thing With Charles. Lee got to talk To
Trey man. Already now we get to talk about the
rookie Con Can, nipple fourth overall selection by The Charlotte
hornets in this past selection. Process he joins us now

(33:45):
On Weston Walker Sports radio ninety two to SEVEN.

Speaker 3 (33:47):
Wfnz con thank you so much for the. Time. Man
how are you doing doing?

Speaker 7 (33:51):
Well thanks for having me.

Speaker 2 (33:52):
Good IT'S i know it's a whirlwind For hornets media.
DAY i know usually with the, rookies they got you
guys waiting around quite a bit With. Sennorty how's the
media to eight going for you so? Far it's going
to run a lot of, stops a lot of, pictures
a lot of. Smiling you, Know it's cool And i'm
thankful the. Opportunity, Well i'm glad you brought up the
pictures because the storyline about, you, specifically there's two storylines

(34:13):
that seem to be developing About. Conkinipple one it's people
are surprised about your. Hops lamello talked about, that shook his.
Head Charles lee said the same, thing like we didn't
expect him to have that kind of. Bounce but the
vertical was good of the, combine, right wasn't?

Speaker 3 (34:27):
It forty? One? Boy think what was? It what was your?
Vertical do you?

Speaker 6 (34:31):
Remember, well SO i had to DO i didn't do
it at the. COMBINE i had to make it. Up
So i'm not. SURE i didn't even really.

Speaker 3 (34:36):
Look you don't know your own.

Speaker 2 (34:38):
VERTICAL i. DON'T i expected you to. Know that's what
everybody says is that they were surprised by your. Hops
but the other thing Is Charles lee And Jeff peterson
love how you decided to wear the head band in summer,
league that they weren't going to hold you, out that
you were going to play hell or high, Water and
so with you taking the, PICTURES i, wondered did you

(34:59):
think about bring out the head band for the league
photo that.

Speaker 3 (35:01):
You would be taking?

Speaker 7 (35:02):
Today, NO i did not think about.

Speaker 2 (35:04):
It you hate that, headband, Man i've heard you say
it a couple of. Times how about like is that
have you ever won a headband before playing?

Speaker 4 (35:11):
Ball?

Speaker 7 (35:12):
No THAT'S i, mean that's kind of kind of part of.

Speaker 6 (35:13):
It i'm kind of a stickler with you know, What
LIKE i got my jersey's got to be tucked in
the right way and. Whatever so having something that was
kind of throwing me for a loop. THERE i didn't
really love.

Speaker 4 (35:22):
It Con have you had any you, know crazy rookie
duty so? Far do you have any responsibilities with the
guys that you get? Donuts do you get food anything like.

Speaker 6 (35:30):
That you, know we haven't done anything. Yet i'm looking
forward to. IT i think it'll be a good. OPPORTUNITY i, think,
uh you, know the guys have been treating us us
rookies well so. Far but, YEAH i, Mean i'm looking
forward to some of that stuff and maybe there'll be
some some funny stuff going.

Speaker 4 (35:44):
On SO i gotta tell, you. MAN i found out
the other day AFTER i got my hair cut my.
Barber he's, like, hey, man you know the rookie from
The hornets came in, here, Okay AND i, said why
didn't you tell? Me there's been a lot of guys
that's coming to the, shop and he doesn't tell me.
Anything he's been cutting my hair since the fifth. Grade
if you start a room in the back when you
went in, there he's been cutting my here since the fifth.
Grade BUT i saw you went Into gordon's barber. Shop,

(36:05):
man how did you discover it to go in there
in the first.

Speaker 6 (36:08):
Place, YEAH i mean we got a we got a
bunch of guys in the in the. Organization, Uh Blaine,
miller one of our, coaches recommend recommended. It he recommended
To Drew, peterson and then you know a couple of
guys that the equipment equipment manager goes.

Speaker 7 (36:21):
There so it was just THE i guess the spot
to be.

Speaker 4 (36:24):
There. Wow SO i guess My barbara didn't even know
that these guys were coming in there and what responsibilities they.

Speaker 3 (36:28):
Have these are familiar faces.

Speaker 4 (36:30):
For The Charlotte, Hornet so, YEAH i gotta tell them
that the next TIME i go in.

Speaker 3 (36:34):
There.

Speaker 4 (36:34):
Man but as far as you getting it in with the,
guys man and the practice with the, team what's that
been like for you so?

Speaker 3 (36:39):
Far, yeah it's been.

Speaker 7 (36:40):
Awesome you.

Speaker 6 (36:40):
KNOW i think we talk about how it's kind of
rare that having having like the full team here for
the whole month Of, september, now it's kind of rare
in THE.

Speaker 7 (36:48):
Nba so it was it was cool to have.

Speaker 6 (36:49):
That that opportunity and uh be able to you, know
play a bunch with the, guys and you, know it
was a really really fun and productive.

Speaker 3 (36:56):
Month what's been the toughest matchup for you in?

Speaker 6 (36:59):
Practice, YEAH i mean Tray, Man, man he's he's hard to.
GUARD i, think, uh you, know some of the some
of the he was hitting some the last time we were,
playing he was hitting some step back midies And i'm, like,
man all, right THAT'S i guess WE'RE i guess we're gonna.
LIVE i guess we're gonna. Live BUT i mean they
looked looked pretty. Easy but, yeah he's he's he's definitely
a tough guy to.

Speaker 2 (37:19):
Guard, yeah, well here you are drafted and they get
a whole bunch of really tough guards to. Defend what
what do you envision your role being like with a?
TEAM i feel like it's a pretty rare build with
all the guards they. Have like you guys don't have
a lot of, centers but you have fun different types of.
Centers and yet you signed all the backcourt. Players so
how do you envision your role filling in with some
of the bets that they.

Speaker 6 (37:38):
Signed, YEAH i, MEAN i THINK i feel pretty confidently
about my ability to play off, ball really confident that.

Speaker 7 (37:45):
Ability you.

Speaker 6 (37:45):
KNOW i, think, uh having a bunch of guards is
something that you, know makes it hard for the opposing
team to. GUARD i, think, uh for, us it opposes
a challenge of we got a. Rebound BUT i. DO
i do think when you have a bunch of talented basketball,
players like we saw with the pay last, year like
they threw a bunch of guards out there and played
good basketball and they played really, Fast AND i think
that's something that we want to do this year as well.

Speaker 3 (38:07):
WELL i mean we've talked about. IT a bunch.

Speaker 2 (38:08):
Man leaning into an oddity about your TEAM i think is.
Awesome like if you have a different build from everybody,
else lean into, it you guys are gonna be fast as.
HELL i note that that has been Something Charles lee
has preached, about So i'm excited to see the strategy
and how he's going to deploy everybody this upcoming. SEASON
i did want to talk here we are discussing his.
Role what About Bill simmons just guaranteeing you a spot

(38:29):
On TEAM usa in twenty twenty.

Speaker 3 (38:31):
Eight you had to see that, clip, Right? YEAH i saw?
It so is he? Right? Like can we just go
ahead and guarantee it right? Here right? Now you're gonna
be On TEAM usa in twenty twenty.

Speaker 6 (38:39):
Eight oh, NO i think it's pretty insane to do
that before BEFORE i play a SINGLE nba.

Speaker 7 (38:44):
Game, YEAH i don't.

Speaker 6 (38:47):
KNOW i THINK i think some of his reasons about
it were, good, like you, know having a guy that's
that's willing to do whatever. Role AND i THINK i
do play The european style game pretty.

Speaker 7 (38:59):
Well i'd. Fit but we'll.

Speaker 4 (39:01):
SEE i think it's always, interesting, man because coming out
of high school you are a top flight. Recruit then
you got to do with huge. Expectations is this anything
new for you coming into a? Team is the fourth
pick of the? Draft do you feel any extra expectations.

Speaker 3 (39:15):
Than you normally have throughout your basketball.

Speaker 6 (39:17):
CAREER i try not to let the outside outside stuff
away on me at. ALL i, think focusing on WHAT
i can do to contribute to the, team and, uh
you know what what they're gonna, do and what are
the other guys are going to? Contribute focusing on all that,
stuff and then's something that Sea ley's talked about with
the whole, group not focusing on the outside noise and
and all, that AND i think that's SOMETHING i tried

(39:38):
to embody throughout my.

Speaker 7 (39:39):
Career so it's just Something i'll keep on doing the.

Speaker 4 (39:41):
Pros what's the biggest takeaway that you got from winning
That Summer league?

Speaker 6 (39:45):
Championship you, KNOW i think that you, know like seeing
the reaction for LIKE i, MEAN i think most teams
like or most most fans Like Summer league, Championship like
it's cool to watch them basketball in this in the,
summer but like do they really really care that? Much
but to see how much like the People, CHARLOTTE i
actually actually thought that was really cool and a cool
thing for The hornets shows that we want to go

(40:07):
to a basketball team In charlotte and here In North.
Carolina SO i think this is a basketball state and
we want we want to be we want to be
good and represent the.

Speaker 2 (40:14):
Fans, WELL i waited in line for a long time
and paid fifty. BUCKS i paid fifty bucks for THAT t.
Shirt we. Care, Okay i'm willing to pay fifty bucks
for That Summer league title.

Speaker 3 (40:23):
Shirt it's, Okay i'm not thinking about. It everything's.

Speaker 2 (40:26):
Fine it's kN kinnipple joining us here On Weston Walker
sports raded ninety two SEVEN. Wfnz so you did appear
At Bill. Simmons it's gotta be a little biased, too
because HE'S i feel like you're his.

Speaker 6 (40:36):
Guy, yeah he had me on SO i THINK i
think he maybe he got a good impression of. Me
SO i don't, know he's a nice.

Speaker 3 (40:41):
Guy he was a good.

Speaker 2 (40:42):
Pod BUT i do think listening to, that it feels
like you're a basketball historian a little. Bit So i'll
get we don't have to go through any. Drama you
don't have to name a player on the team right.
NOW i don't want to Hear lamello At. Brandon but
going back in basketball history with The, hornets do you
have a favorite player that suited it up in the
purple And teal that's not on the roster right.

Speaker 6 (40:58):
Now styn on the roster right. NOW i MEAN i
Think Al. JEFFERSON i mean that's such a sick oh.
ANSWER i just LIKE i just post, moves LIKE i
missed that type of.

Speaker 7 (41:07):
Basketball you.

Speaker 3 (41:08):
Know my favorite thing is him with the one hand.
Grab nobody like to.

Speaker 2 (41:13):
Throw to have that basketball in one hand and then

come down and knock it. Away except For al. Big

Speaker 2 (42:07):
QUESTION i just REMEMBERED i wanted to get to this
as well well with The Summer league. Championship, man you
are right like this fan base cares a lot about.
That that was awesome to see with some of the rookies.
Winning it was a rough stretch for you in terms
of scoring the basketball at. FIRST i know you talked
about that a little, bit but it feels like you
bounce back real, Nicely like especially with the way that
you performed the last couple of games Of Summer. League

(42:27):
what was that experience like for you to experience the
lows at the very beginning and the highs of winning
it with you being a huge part as to why
you want.

Speaker 6 (42:34):
It, YEAH i MEAN i think you, know it took
a little bit to just get, adjusted you, know never
playing with those guys before we practiced like four, Times
so getting adjusted to like all the players around, you
that's something for me that's kind of, important you, know
just When i'm going out there and, playing but also
just a quick reality check at THE, nba like you
got to move on to the next, game and you

(42:56):
can't you can't dwell and stuff like. That the game
there's not half the games like there's we played thirty
nine in, College like the games mean a little bit
a little bit more each individual, game but you just
got to move on get ready for the next. One
take what you learned from the last one and apply,
It AND i think that was a good lesson That
Summer League TEAM.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
