Speaker 1 (00:08):
Only Sports Radio ninety two point seven half am, going up.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
N see fine, he's the Weston Walker Show. Even a
crowd knows what's coming there. Oh baby, we are just
a little over twenty four hours away from the Duke's
Mayo Classic. Yeah man, Charlotte taking on app State at
Bank of America Stadium. And I tweeted it out earlier.
(00:35):
It's gonna be all Charlotte.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
Really.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
I guess we'll talk about some app We will talk
about them a little bit today, giving you the scheduled prediction,
but it's gonna be all Charlotte for the next couple
of days. And I tweeted it out west I'm ready
to high dive in a tub of Duke's may all right.
I want to do it, and I would love to
see it.
Speaker 3 (00:52):
You know.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
It's one of those it's like, oh no, I thought
of this idea a little too late. I guess we
can't do it. Gosh darn it. It's one of those.
But I would absolutely do it to get the crowd rolling,
get Charlotte ready to go. Get the first time a
football was ready to jump in a tomb of Mayo.
It can only be Dukes though, can't be Helman's. I
diving in Helmans, not diving in a miracle whip. Does
(01:16):
anybody eat miracle whip anymore? In any ways? Is that
a thing?
Speaker 1 (01:19):
No?
Speaker 2 (01:19):
Man, it's all Duke's Mayo around here because we're in
the South. I don't want any tomato sandwiches with Helman's mayo. No,
thank you, the Duke's Mayo classic. We are about to
get things underway around here, and what better way to
do it than getting off the bus with Charlotte head
football coach Tim Albin. That's right, this is what we're
(01:40):
doing here. I promise you, this is what we're doing.
It's a guy that I've been waiting to talk to
for a while, both of us here on West and Walker.
We're excited for him to be the next head coach
here at Charlotte the first time, first time around these parts?
Is Tim Albin in around here at West and Walker? So, coach,
are you doused in mayo yet? Are you guys warming
up that Bank of America already? How are you doing?
Speaker 4 (02:04):
I'm doing just fine. I really appreciate that you guys
having me on here to say a few things.
Speaker 3 (02:09):
But yeah, we got we've got the mail ready.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
Be on the true story.
Speaker 4 (02:13):
Today is my daughter's birthday and her favorite thing I
cook is brisket, and I used Duke. I used Duke's
Mayo as a binder from my brisket baby.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
Oh okay, well, first of all, okay, happy birthday to
your daughter. Second of all, I'm pleased to hear this
because I know how y'all midwesterners get down. I got
family in Indianapolis. I was born there. I didn't know
if you were a Hellman's guy before, but to hear
this like this was gonna be my first question legitimately,
are you a Hellman's Miracle whip guy? And have you
been introduced to Duke's Mayo yet? But it sounds like
(02:45):
you have. And what better way to give us some
Duke's mayo than just lathering a juicy brisket in it? Coach,
you know ball congratulations. I appreciate that.
Speaker 4 (02:56):
That is awesome.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
But yeah, I'm a Duke's guy, and you can tell
by my pants size because of the mental cheese stuff
I've had for the last seven months.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
Oh my goodness, a Duke's guy's got to win this
game then, I mean, the karma is on our side.
The gods, the Mayo gods, if there are such a thing,
they are on our side. It's Charloae forty nine Ers
had football coach Tim Albin joining us on Wes and
Walker Sports Radio ninety two to seven WFNZ Coach. Look,
when we were talking about the head coaching vacancy around here,
(03:24):
all of us in the Chandler VAULTA Studios, we all
had Tim Albin as the best replacement down here. All
of us did. And we also didn't think we'd be
able to get you down here to the Queen City.
You were in Ohio for a while, you had your
coaching staff there for quite some time. You had already won,
You've won conference championships. What does that conversation like for you?
Speaker 3 (03:45):
Like?
Speaker 2 (03:45):
What gets the ball rolling on you leaving a place
with such stability and such winning tradition that you in
large part were responsible for, at least recently. What gets
the ball rolling for you to head down here?
Speaker 4 (03:58):
Yeah, I appreciate that question. It's really easy. It became
very clear to me early on the leadership team.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
Our Chancellor Sharon Gabor uh her vision, and I've shared.
Speaker 4 (04:10):
This first part with her. The second part I have not,
and I'm excited to tell you. But but she came
from Tuigo University, which is.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
In our It was in the mac and Jason Kendall
is one of my dear friends. I reached out to
him when when this thing, when we were in talks,
just I wanted to know, you know, I don't care
about facilities right now, Hey, I just we need direction,
vision and resources, all right. And he could not say
(04:39):
enough great things about our chancellor. And then then we
started talking with Director Hill, and uh, I got a
chance to come to come to the Queen City and
and get in front of.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
H the vetting process and.
Speaker 1 (04:57):
This part I have haven't I've never shared, all right,
and but I'm I want to share it.
Speaker 4 (05:04):
I haven't even told Sharon.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
But throughout the and the course of that interview, I'd
asked the question.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (05:14):
We got talking about again leadership and vision, and I said.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
I feel the football program is the front porch to
your university, all right.
Speaker 3 (05:26):
And I was reading, I was reading reading body language
and if I.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
Felt like, you know, that's tough for a chancellor when
someone says the football is the front porch of university,
that's gonna make you know.
Speaker 3 (05:39):
Some people may be nervous, and she was, I mean smiled,
and I loved it.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
And I've never died and I never told her of that,
but that was a defining moment from me. I thought, Okay,
we're gonna be okay, and you know, and then then
we kept we kept going, and and here I am,
but very specifically, if if I would, you know something different,
because you need great.
Speaker 4 (06:02):
Leadership to be successful, and we certainly have it.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
So coach, you needed the right body language, and you
came here off of vibes putting football first and foremost.
Is that what I'm hearing?
Speaker 1 (06:13):
Yeah, that's the short version on a cliff note.
Speaker 5 (06:16):
All right, all right, Charlotte football coach Tim Abbin joins
us on the Bodyworks Plus Guest hotline. You can follow
him on x at Coach Albun and coach talk about
this team and how far you guys have come from
spring to training camp to now.
Speaker 3 (06:33):
Well, I'm gonna be honest.
Speaker 1 (06:37):
We got eighteen transfers after spring practice, you know, fifty
six new guys, which is the norm right now across
the board in party group of five schools. Hey, we're
a Nastauk country baby, and I didn't take her out
for a spin. See how she handles, and you know,
go around the you know, go around the curves and
see how she moves.
Speaker 4 (06:57):
You know, we're gonna have to make some adjustments.
Speaker 3 (06:58):
We're not gonna be perfect, but.
Speaker 4 (07:00):
But we have made progress. Uh and we need to
We need to play a game to see where we're at.
Speaker 3 (07:07):
We could practice another six months and uh and we
would not.
Speaker 1 (07:11):
Get any better.
Speaker 4 (07:12):
We got to play a game.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
We got twelve opportunities and man, is how excited are
we to play in that great venue Bank of America,
Queens City, one hundred thousand alumni in the city, right
against the N State rival. It isn't not getting any
better than that coach.
Speaker 5 (07:28):
A lot of people thought that Grayson Loftis was going
to be the favorite to win this quarterback job, but
it ends up being Connor Harrow.
Speaker 2 (07:33):
How was he able to do this? How did he
earn that position?
Speaker 1 (07:37):
And again it is down to the wire.
Speaker 4 (07:40):
Very tough decision, really, all three guys. Uh uh.
Speaker 3 (07:43):
Pod Fitch did a great job on the evaluation process.
We met, you know, four or five days ago.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
He went when we went back and.
Speaker 4 (07:50):
Watched every clip through Spring, all the way through Paul camp.
Speaker 1 (07:54):
And that's where we're at with it. Grayson is ready
to play.
Speaker 3 (07:58):
They all three are capable. I've said this before.
Speaker 1 (08:01):
Wouldn't shock me at some point in time with where
we are in college athletics today, that you see all
three at some point in time throughout the course of
the year. But we're expired for Connor. He's got a
great leadership skills and I just want him to go
out there and execute the offense.
Speaker 4 (08:17):
Let the guys around him make some plays.
Speaker 3 (08:19):
And we'll be fine.
Speaker 5 (08:20):
Coach, defense is always ahead of an offense when you're practicing,
But just how confident are you in this offense right now?
Speaker 1 (08:29):
Again, we're going to test driver find out. I think
we've got some players that can make some some plays
for us explosively, and I think we're going to be
found Up front, we've got as solid group of tied ends.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
Running back will be by committee.
Speaker 1 (08:44):
You'll probably see up the three guys back there. I
believe in having a freshman, a fresh guy that can
that can finish runs the right way, and I think
your football team takes on your mindset. You know, we
want to stop the run and we want to have meaningful,
meaningful rush yards in the second half.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
Those are two keys.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
Charlotte forty nine er head football coach Tim Albin joining
us ahead of the Duke's Mayo Classic against app State
at Bank of America Stadium tomorrow. We're excited for it.
He's joining us here on Wes and Walker, coach, I
want to go back to your quarterback convents. You said
it in press availability, you just said it with Wes
there a moment ago that you wouldn't be surprised seeing
all three of these qbs throughout the course of a season.
(09:24):
I'm curious with it going down to the WI or
what your patience level is for Connor Harrold. Do you
want him to play through some of these mistakes and
be okay, not looking over his shoulder? Do you want
to apply the pressure if he makes a mistake then well, okay,
that means you might lose your job. What's your patience
level with times like this?
Speaker 4 (09:40):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (09:40):
I don't.
Speaker 4 (09:41):
I don't want him thinking thinking anything about what you
just said. I want him thinking about his job.
Speaker 1 (09:46):
And it's not going to be a short, short hook,
you know, on a mistake, because I guarantee you we're
gonna all go make them. You don't have you don't
have this many new faces and things. Don't you know
it's not going to be you know, better roses out there,
and uh, hey, it's onto the next play.
Speaker 4 (10:03):
Don't let the mistake affect the next play.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
That's our that's our that's our big thing, all right,
don't let the previous play affect the next one.
Speaker 4 (10:11):
You're not You're not No.
Speaker 3 (10:12):
One.
Speaker 4 (10:13):
Thanks for real failure. It's you're in. You're in the
arena for a reason.
Speaker 1 (10:16):
You've earned the right and uh, you've got the backing
of your teammates.
Speaker 4 (10:22):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (10:22):
And it's the next play is you've got croven mechanism right,
and if they do that.
Speaker 3 (10:28):
We'll be We'll be just fine. Coach.
Speaker 2 (10:29):
We'll have plenty more questions for you on the game,
but I do want to catch up with you on
the off season.
Speaker 4 (10:34):
Here.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
You are a great evaluator of talent based on all
of the talented players that both came into Ohio and
then maybe even left for the transfer portal, and yet
all you do is you keep winning. I'm curious what
the difference is recruiting at Ohio compared to recruiting at Charlotte.
What were some of the biggest differences that you've experienced
in just an off season.
Speaker 3 (10:52):
So far, well, I think, I mean you you take.
Speaker 4 (10:59):
Are University, an.
Speaker 3 (11:01):
R one institution, the academic background, business.
Speaker 1 (11:05):
Engineering, all right, there's so many other wonderful majors. You
combine that with the Queen City opportunities uptown for internships.
Speaker 4 (11:16):
And connections through.
Speaker 1 (11:19):
Our football program is so exciting. And you've got five
professional teams, all right, you've got NASCAR. There's so many
things to sell, and you combine that with our breast
taking campus.
Speaker 3 (11:32):
Man.
Speaker 1 (11:32):
I meant we already have eighteen guys committed, thirteen are
within a tink of gas of uptown. Yeah, and twelve
of those eighteen.
Speaker 4 (11:43):
Or mid year enrollies.
Speaker 1 (11:45):
So we are off and running because there's a lot
of good, great things to sell.
Speaker 5 (11:50):
Coach, you guys have one of the best defenses in
the country last year at Ohio. What's the biggest trait
from those defenses that you wanted to establish here?
Speaker 4 (11:57):
Immediately off the run, run to the ball limit explosedus.
Speaker 1 (12:05):
I mean, that's standard, and again that's coach speak. Everybody's
gonna say that, but that's that's what we're going to
be built on.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
Coach what challenges will app State present to you on Saturday.
Speaker 1 (12:17):
Well, again, they have this a total rebuild for them
as well. You know, it's we're going off of so
many different films. I mean film this, this player came
from this school, and we're watching film. This player came
from this school. This the fust things coordinator was at Texas,
you know, and they have all those the staff of
the NFL experience. So we have seen a lot of
(12:38):
film from a lot of different places.
Speaker 4 (12:39):
But at the end of the day, it's going to be, hey.
Speaker 3 (12:43):
What do we know.
Speaker 1 (12:44):
Let's focus on what we know. I don't care what
the other team knows.
Speaker 4 (12:47):
I care about what we know and our fundamentals.
Speaker 1 (12:50):
Off the play, they're going to have some things that
are going to present problems, I'm sure on both sides. Uh,
And so we got to focus on us and then
use the iPads the technology on the sideline. We've got
an unbelievable staff. It's going to make a great adjustments
and you know, Calm.
Speaker 2 (13:10):
Breeds Calm Charlotte forty nine Ers head football coach Tim Albomar.
Oh you like that, don't you. Yeah, we'll play that.
We'll promo that. Tim Alvin, Charlotte forty nineer head football
coach joining us here on Weston Walker. Just a couple
more questions, coach, you mentioned the run defense. We're doing
team week around here, so we highlight different programs. We
saved app State and the Charlotte forty nine ers for
(13:31):
last when we were talking about the defense. The way
we see it is it looks like you guys have
an excellent back end defensive backfield, with Conley of course
being a captain. Your linebackers made a bajillion tackles last year,
whether it was at Charlotte Wather, it was at other stops.
The defensive line seems like it could go either way
with some talented dudes, especially at the edge. How do
you feel like your strengths are defensively in stopping the run?
(13:54):
Where is that stopping the run going to come from?
Is it on the back end more so making those
tackles or do you believe in your line stopping it
right away at the line of scrimmage?
Speaker 3 (14:03):
Well, I have this.
Speaker 1 (14:04):
I mean, I'm gonna the best answer I can give
is gonna be after this first game, all right, and
I'm gonna be able to talk to speak on a
more more directly. But if I'm seeing it right through
screen practice and obviously through Paul Camp, we're gonna have
a rotation up front the deepensive line.
Speaker 4 (14:21):
I don't think we're gonna have to I don't think
we're gonna.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
Have anybody up front and the D line that's gonna
have to play over forty snaps. We're gonna have a
rotation of seven or eight guys, and that, like in
my my thirty seven years, that is a good, good thing,
all right. Uh, And so you take this the back
end the safeties, we're five deep. I think you mentioned JQ.
Speaker 3 (14:42):
I mean we've got some.
Speaker 4 (14:43):
We've got some guys back there safety, all right.
Speaker 1 (14:46):
And then I think we'rere a four or five deep
at linebacker. So up the middle stall, we're gonna do
what we do.
Speaker 4 (14:53):
But I am my glass is half full right now
going into this contest.
Speaker 2 (14:59):
All right, Final question, Coach, A lot of people are
wondering about your brisket process. If you're lathering it up
in dukes, you're already off to a great start. But
we've talked a lot about brisket on these airwaves over
the last couple of years. We love food, can you
take us through how to cook the perfect brisket.
Speaker 4 (15:15):
Well, I have a trigger, all.
Speaker 1 (15:17):
Right, but I've also got I've got a real smoker.
Speaker 4 (15:20):
I mean you know, I mean a real pick cut
the wood.
Speaker 1 (15:23):
I made it myself when I was in high school.
Speaker 3 (15:24):
Still have it, all right.
Speaker 4 (15:26):
So yeah, so it's game weekend, so I'm just using
the trigger.
Speaker 3 (15:30):
I'm just using tragger.
Speaker 1 (15:31):
But I got a little marinate for about twenty four
hours in the fridge. I lather it up, put my
favorite seasoning salt and pepper's just fine. I smoke it
for twelve wrap her in books paper with a little
bit of a little bit of French onion dip our
French onion soup to keep it.
Speaker 4 (15:48):
Moist in there, and I go another.
Speaker 1 (15:49):
I go another two hours, about two fifty, and I've
come out. Letter said, about four hours splice through up.
Speaker 2 (15:57):
Does your album maters? College football coach make his own
smoker in high school?
Speaker 3 (16:03):
No?
Speaker 2 (16:03):
Okay, then you don't have as good of a college
football coach as I do. We appreciate the time coach
Tim Albin getting ready for the Duke's Mayo Classic against
the app State Mountaineers at Bank of America Stadium tomorrow.
We appreciate the time. Coach, good luck and we'll talk
to you down the road.
Speaker 4 (16:21):
I appreciate that, fellas, enjoy the game.
Speaker 2 (16:23):
Joe Niners, all right, good stuff there from Tim Albn.
We'll take a quick break. We'll come back with plenty
more Panthers, Dan Morgan, sound what we expect with the
fifty three man roster going into the regular season as
Hunter renfro on the team. Plenty more to get to
on Weston Walker Sports Radio ninety two seven WFNZ. Weston
(16:49):
Walker Back Sports Radio ninety two to seven WFNZ. Huge
thanks to Charlotte forty nine ers head football coach Tim
Albin joining us on the guest line. A lot of
people riding in a very similar thing to what I
was thinking, like, uh, nervous, but but sounds yeah, sound
nervous energy for sure. It sounds happy, nervous. It sounds
(17:10):
like he's a cage dog ready to be let out. Woof. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (17:15):
I like that.
Speaker 5 (17:15):
Maybe a little of that out of the game is
right around the corner. Debut, you know, a little bit
bigger stage. Maybe a little bit of that.
Speaker 2 (17:23):
I don't know. It sounds like Tim Alban is doing
I think that's.
Speaker 6 (17:29):
That was when when you hear this guy, do you think,
do you think very calm, laid back individual.
Speaker 2 (17:38):
I don't think so, No, but he kind of is
though there. I mean he was, he was laid back.
Speaker 6 (17:42):
But like I feel like he's always going to be
a guy that when he talks, he's going to sound
like he is very excited or a little nervous to talk.
But I do think it's genuine excitement. It's like, get
me to this game, this game.
Speaker 2 (17:57):
My man knows how to cook a brisket, though, And
I do want to football coach that built his own
smoker in high school. Yeah, it's just like on a
good like a meathead, like a man's man, like we
take care of our own around here. It sounds like
Kyle Bailey. It sounds, you know, Kyle Bailey build my
own smoker in high So it sounds like, to be
honest with you, I would mind Kyle Bailey being a
football coach. And if we get that in Tim Albyn
(18:19):
with that at resume, I'll take that resume any day
of the week. All right, let's talk a little more football,
except the professional side of thing around here. Side of
things around here, Dan Morgan just speaking to media within
the last hour. He spoke for a long time. He
spoke about the Adam Thielen trade, the Ikey quantity injury
that he suffered, the appendicitis. Now he might actually miss
(18:41):
Game one against Jacksonville. Are we going to bring back
Hunter Renfro. There's a lot of stuff to get to.
I think where we lead off is some of the
Adam Thielen commentary from Dan Morgan. So here he is
discussing the process on sending Adam Thielen to Minnesota, everything
that happened in between, just discussing how it all went
(19:02):
down when talking with the wide receiver from the Vikings.
We're trying to turn this audio a little bit over quickly,
so okay, Flanders, give me the thumbs up. Let's hear
from Dan Morgan on trading the wide receiver.
Speaker 7 (19:11):
Everybody knows we traded Adam Thieling obviously made a huge
impact on this.
Speaker 2 (19:18):
Building, the people in the building.
Speaker 7 (19:21):
Myself included, made a huge impact on the wide receiving corps,
the young guys. I think he set them up for
success moving forward. Adams just you know, consummate and pro
a guy that prepared the right way, took care of
his body, did all the things that he won an
(19:44):
NFL player to do, and he was a great example
for our locker room, especially our young guys, on how
to do it. So he'll be missed around here and
I wish him and his family the best moving forward.
Speaker 2 (20:00):
Thoughts on those statements some of the things that you've
seen come out of the last twenty four hours, how
are you feeling about Adam Thieling in Minnesota with some
of the things you've seen, Yeah, not surprising.
Speaker 5 (20:10):
I mean we knew that that was part of the
package of what he brought here, being the veteran, being
able to help guys out, and being the type of
guy he is. He seems like a genuinely good person.
And those were the sentiments that were echoed by Dan Morgan.
As far as on the field, we'll see. Like I said,
it is a little bit risky. I feel like that
the Panthers did it because they do feel confident or
(20:31):
either they're just saying that, hey, this year, if we
are contender, then it's icing on the cake and maybe
the cherry on top. So we'll just rock with it
and if it doesn't work, then we know where we
need to go from here. But you know, I think
a veteran like that, and a lot of fans kind
of said the same thing. A guy that was your
top receiver, a guy that was the most dependable because
(20:52):
of his years of service in this league. Tough to
get rid of that and take a gamble on some
young guys that you aren't quite sure were on really
any of them.
Speaker 2 (21:01):
Just yet. I thought everybody did a really nice job
asking the types of questions that mattered over there whoever
is covering the team, because every question that I had
the top four or five on the list, it felt
like that's what was being asked of Dan Morgan, and
so I want to play some of the answers. Here's
Dan Morgan on if he felt pressure to trade Adam
Delend back to Minnesota. I think no, I.
Speaker 7 (21:25):
Would say, you know, Minnesota called me and they asked
about Adam and me. As the GM and as a
former player, I like to be open and honest and
transparent with the players. So I called Adam to my
office and I let him know that they called. I
asked him if he would have interest in going back there.
(21:48):
He said that he would. You know, once he told
me that, you know, he was very intrigued, very excited
of the possibility of going there and basically his career,
you know, ending his career where it first started. And
that's where he lives too, he has a house.
Speaker 2 (22:08):
So I knew.
Speaker 7 (22:09):
I knew, and I could tell that he was really
excited about the possibility that that might happen. I told him,
you know, I'd do my best, you know, to make
it happen. But I'm not just going to give give
you away. We're gonna have to get something, you know,
fourth round value or something that we feel for the
Carolina Panthers is good because you're a really good receiver,
(22:31):
You're a really good leader. So we wanted to make
sure that we've got the compensation that we feel comfortable
with before we did it.
Speaker 2 (22:38):
So what else more do you want? In my opinion,
I think that's how you handle it. You can disagree
with the decision to trade Adam Thielen. There are plenty
of arguments against it. Now, the only receiver that you
can really trust because of their resume in the NFL
is God, do you have one? David Moore. David Moore
is here for mentorship. There's a whole article about him
(23:00):
and his main responsibility being teaching the young receivers how
to be a pro more than it is going for
six hundred receiving yards. David Moore's responsibility is help us
out a little bit in the passing game. Got some
special team stuff that you could be a part of,
and teach these young guys how to be professionals. So
when it comes to producing on the football field, we
(23:20):
have Cocher who might be the most short handed guy
on the team now, especially if Hunter Renfro is not
going to be on the squad, which he's still not.
Will get to those comments later. Team Mac excellent at
catching everything at Arizona. Had drop issues a little bit
in camp and in the preseason, especially that first game,
and excel enough said on some of the issues and
(23:42):
things we're worried about there. I love the process. I
think this is exactly how you handle it. You receive
a call from Minnesota, you ask Adam Thielen, what would
he want? Cool, We'll take that into consideration. We're going
to try to do right by you. But also remember
I can't look like a clown just giving you up
for nothing because you Adam Thielen want so badly to
(24:03):
go back to Minnesota. And I don't think it became
so badly until we started to see the comments from
his wife on social media. Now they're putting out videos
of the kids being extremely happy going back to Minnesota.
The family wants to go back. I can't hold that
against him. I'm just glad that Dan Morgan took every
single step to making sure that we got fair value
(24:24):
and giving the player and his family what he wanted.
I just think that's exactly how you handle the situation.
Speaker 5 (24:30):
Yeah, I would agree with you Dan Morgan as a
guy that's going to have the best ansest of the
Panthers first and foremost, and I think that's the number
one thing you have to take away from it. No
matter how good the story may be, no matter how
much good will it may come across, as Dan Morgan's
always going to be thinking about the Panthers in the
black and blue, and I think for Panthers fan that
has to be the most comforting thing to come out
(24:51):
of those comments.
Speaker 2 (24:52):
Till Person wrote an excellent article on The Athletic taking
us behind the scenes on how this trade went down.
Dan Morgan really emphasizing a lot of what was already
written in Joe Person's article. I encourage everybody to go
to his Twitter account at Joseph Person and read it.
We'll play some more Dan Morgan sound in the meantime.
Here's Dan on if he thought maybe a trade wouldn't
(25:13):
happen after seeing all these reports from Adam Schefter and
seeing the reports of the hang ups and compensation. Was
Minnesota gonna pay a lot of the money that was
already due to Adam Thielen. Here's Dan Morgan saying, yeah,
I did think at times this might not happen.
Speaker 7 (25:28):
There were times storing the negotiations with Minnesota like I
didn't think it was gonna happen. There was a lot
of back and forth, a lot of posturing, a lot
of you know, like no, I'm not doing that, I'm
not doing that. So, you know, it was a week's
worth of negotiating and kind of going back and forth
and probably hating each other, you know at some points.
(25:50):
But yeah, I mean, well, there's no doubt we'll miss
at him. But you know, I feel like our young
guys are well suited to go out there and play
really good football.
Speaker 2 (26:00):
Yeah, I thought there were times that it might not
happen too if Minnesota was just going to hold on
to all of their most valuable draft picks, And it
did complicate things that they didn't have their twenty twenty
six fourth rounder to trade. It was only a compensatory pick.
He can't trade those, and the only one that they
had was in twenty twenty seven. Eventually, that's what Carolina got,
but they wanted that value and so with there being
(26:22):
a few hang ups, I thought maybe theland would just
be on the team as well. But doesn't that always
go back to leverage. Who is most motivated to get
this done? Ye, Carolina is not crazy motivated to get
this done. There is some incentive to he leaves for
nothing at the end of the year. But also we
could just have a good football player on the roster
(26:42):
for the rest of this season while developing Bryce Young,
while developing some of the other young receivers. We don't
have to rely on him as much now. All of
the targets that are supposed to go to the young
receivers now they would have gone to a guy that
did have a thousand yard season a couple of years ago,
that was averaging thirteen yards Perce just a season ago,
despite getting hurt. So there was not a whole lot
(27:04):
of leverage for Minnesota or really even Adam Thieling. It
was a lot of It was in Carolina's hands, and
I thought that they handled it really well.
Speaker 5 (27:12):
Yeah, and to your point, it was an unexpected situation,
Like I don't think the Panthers came into the season,
especially at this juncture, thinking that they would trade Adam Feeling.
I think that they were fully on board with him
being a part of the team this year and then
probably if he wanted to retire or go somewhere else
once the season was over, then that was what was
going to happen. So I think that adds to the Panthers'
(27:34):
lack of motivation to get this done because it was
just so unexpected for them.
Speaker 2 (27:39):
But at the end of the day, the Panthers did
what they needed to do.
Speaker 5 (27:41):
And you heard Dan Morgan, he said that they feel
confident that their young players are ready to go, because
I think if they did not feel that way, this
drade would not have happened.
Speaker 2 (27:50):
Okay, you said he feels confident. He talked about why
he's so confident in your boy, Jalen Cocher. Everybody has
their eyes on him now as that third down target
and the guy that is going to play the slot,
which also Dan Morgan talked about. Here's more from the
Panthers GM on Jalen Coker really providing an impact.
Speaker 7 (28:10):
I think what makes me confident is, first of all,
the opportunity that he got last year.
Speaker 2 (28:17):
He took full advantage of it.
Speaker 7 (28:18):
He was out there making plays all over the place,
you know, and then you see him on a day
to day basis out there like he's he's a baller,
like he's a really good player, somebody that we're extremely
excited about along with the other guys, and he wants it.
Speaker 3 (28:34):
He wants it.
Speaker 7 (28:35):
He wants to be great.
Speaker 2 (28:37):
The other guys they want to be great.
Speaker 7 (28:39):
So that's why full full confidence that they're going to
be good.
Speaker 2 (28:43):
I saw a stat on Twitter from NFL Pro and
I forget who tweetered it out. I'll try to find
that account when I toss it to you, Wes, but
I saw some stats about guys playing out of the
slot in a Dave Canalis offense, and Jalen Coker is
expected to be that guy. They talked about it there,
They outright said he'll fill in the slot. Cool. We
all knew that. But also there's a rotation there one
(29:05):
Dave can Allis likes mixing it up a little bit.
But the position that plays the most out of the
slot alignment is actually tight end in the offenses that
we've seen both at Tampa and here in Carolina last year.
So Adam Thiland had the most routes run out of
the slot last year, but right behind him was JT. Sanders,
and then I think third or fourth was Tommy Tremble.
(29:26):
And Tommy Tremble that's kind of wild you would expect
him to have the third or fourth most routes really
at the slot position, with Jalen Cocher having played there
as well last season. You go back to Tampa, it
was Kate Atton who ran the most out of the
slot alignment in Tampa's offense, and then it was Trey
Palmer who actually got cut from Tampa. But maybe the
tight end is also a position to look at here.
(29:47):
I won't even say maybe, I'm telling you tight end
is the other position to look at. With Adam Thlan
being gone in Minnesota as a guy who was going
to see or as a position that's going to see
a lot more routes out of that position on the football.
Speaker 5 (30:00):
Yeah, and that doesn't surprise me because that's kind of
the way of football now, is a tight end. You
can't just be a guy that's going to line up
and be a big blocker or you know, you got
to be a little bit of both. But as far
as the receiving goes, most tight ends that are selected
now and most of them that start for their respective team,
are guys that bring versatility where they can line up
in line or they can go out into the slot
(30:21):
and be able to play and create matchup advantages for
their team. So it doesn't surprise me at all. That's
just kind of a new way a tight end has
to be able to play the game. Yeah, one hundred percent,
especially with JT who lost some weight this offseason. It's
not like the eighties tight end that is ready to
stay in line and block and make sure one of
(30:41):
the defensive lineman it catches the occasional pass.
Speaker 2 (30:44):
If you had thirty receptions, then you were top five
receptions in the league. Because we needed two hundred and
sixty pound two hundred and seventy five pound dudes. Go ahead,
and blocking not so much here for J. T. Sanders.
So one thing I'm seeing on the tax line fantal
tax line seven oh four five seven oh ninety six
to ten. Puny Giant writes this in wes Nah Walker.
(31:05):
According to the previous show of the Sky's falling with
this trade, Hoosier's Daddy's daddy said, glad to hear the
first show today. Not looking at this so negatively. All
respect for the other shows, but it's time to move
on and focus on the positives. So I didn't hear
Mack and Bones. I did hear Colin and Shroppy talking
about it, and their point was not they didn't expect
(31:26):
a world where neither Thielan nor Hunter Renfro was on
the roster, and now they're worried about some of those
third down targets and the lack of short handedness. And
I do understand that. I also I hear their concern
about it. There is concern. Dan Morgan says, there's a
big risk when you make this type of trade. We're
trying to facilitate adams feelings to a certain degree while
(31:46):
also not getting screwed compensation coming back. It does free
up cap space going into twenty twenty six when we
are going to go for a postseason birth. But all
of that to say, there are some concerns here. I
guess Adam Thiele and I can see that a little
bit more so Hunter Renfro. Are we losing our minds
(32:06):
a little too much on a guy that hasn't played
football in a while? And I feel I feel like
that for the fan base. I want Hunter Renfro on
the team.
Speaker 3 (32:16):
I do so.
Speaker 2 (32:17):
I don't want to talk out of both sides out
of my mouth. Yeah, it just feels like the energy,
the fervor the angst that we discuss Hunter Renfro not
being on the squad with feels like we're going a
little overboard on that. Yeah, and how these two now
have become so intertwined And we joke about it talking
about the white guy for the white guy, but it
is like these two have been intertwined. But for people,
(32:37):
it's easy to put your finger on it. It's the nostalgia.
Speaker 5 (32:40):
Because of where he played college football, he is very
familiar to this fan base. A lot of these people
have seen, you know, and watched his career, so people
are automatically going to say and think about the good
things that he did. They don't necessarily know the player
that he is now. You saw a few clips online
from him, and you know, you heard a little bit
from practic just reports. But other than that, like I said,
(33:02):
a lot of people are just going off of the
Hunter Renfro that they remember and not the Renfro that
he is now. There's obviously a reason why the Panthers
send him packing and then brought in other receivers over him.
Now they do want him back, but still this isn't
a situation where we have to get out of the
mentality thinking that Adam Thieln is going to be a
difference maker. Like the Panthers have their top three guys
(33:24):
that are set and unless injury happens, then those are
going to be the guys that are going to get
the bulk of the targets. But yeah, I would agree
with you one thousand percent. I think a lot of
people are just very nostalgic when they think about Hunter
Renfro and they think that somehow he can go and
dig out that Pro Bowl player that was there a
few years ago. But that was a few years ago. Man,
in your body and sports and things like that man.
(33:47):
It's you know, you have to update your resume every year,
and he hasn't been the same.
Speaker 2 (33:51):
Player kind of since. Yet he's shorthanded, he can help
you move the chains. He's a different type of receiver
than really anybody else you have on this roster. So
I do want him, especially with the way that they
were talking about him before camp. But I guess the injury,
some of the performances after the injury, I don't know.
I guess they just got to a point where not
only did Jimmy Horn make the roster and how to
(34:15):
Renfro did in, but then we got to a place
where bryceon Tremaine made the roster and Hudder Renfro did in.
Let's talk more about how To Renfro on the other
side and play some Dan Morgan audio, because between Dave
Canalis speaking to media yesterday and Dan Morgan speaking to
media today, I'm getting mixed signals on how much they
value how To Renfro. The Hunter Renfro debacle, It'll go
(34:36):
down and Panther's infa me and what happened the off
season at twenty twenty five. We talk about it more.
Coming up next on Wes and Walker all time booty Mover.
(35:01):
We can agree on that, Wes. This is one of
the ones that when you hear this song, I start
shaking just a little bit more to a beat.
Speaker 5 (35:08):
Now, Yeah, that's the classic yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, Bluha
classic album.
Speaker 2 (35:12):
All right, classic track. I wanted to see if we
were on the same page with the booty Movers around
here on WESN Walker because we're playing them all day long.
Western Walker Sports Radio ninety two seven WFNZ. Appreciate everybody
joining us in the midday and we're broadcasting live from
the Chandler Volta Studios. CV Injurylaw dot Com. CV Injury
Law dot Com. One call, that's all. Maybe the Carolina's
(35:33):
Personal Injury Lawyers seven oh four five, seven oh ninety
six ten. Feel free to text in. Also on the
FanDuel text line, I imagine we'll get a decent amount
of text because we're talking Hunter Rentfro and people are
passionate about the former Clemson wide out. So here's where
I feel like we're getting kind of conflicting messages and
maybe I even have that wrong. You can help me
(35:54):
out with that, Wes. Here's Dave Canalis speaking to media
yesterday about the Hunter ren Fro situation and why he's
not on the team.
Speaker 8 (36:02):
We've been in constant communication with Hunters since yesterday. He's
talking to his family, he's talking to his agent, you know,
and we're all just kind of we have we have
a couple of things on the table for him, and
we're just gonna keep taking kind of one day at
a time and see where he's at, you know. And
I just felt like, you know, towards the end, like
the last stretch of what I saw, I want to
be able to count on Hunter to be as good
(36:24):
as he was the whole time, and I just saw
I just saw some peaks and then I just saw
some dips also in terms of his performance, and I
just felt like, in fairness to the whole group, in
fairness to the team, I wanted to make sure that
he knew I want to be a part of your future.
I don't think right now is the time initially for
this team, and so we just he just kind of said,
(36:44):
you know, I have to think about what I want
to do. And so we're in we're in communication right now.
We're going to kind of take it day by day
and see where we're at.
Speaker 2 (36:51):
So I don't know about you. I listened to that,
and I think maybe Hunter Renfro didn't have as good
of a camp as everybody was talking about, not from
his point of view. He said things like, there are
a couple of things on the table for him. Maybe
those things are, you could come back and be on
the practice squad. We want you to come back, but
(37:12):
you're gonna be more in this specific role on the
fifty three.
Speaker 1 (37:15):
Man.
Speaker 2 (37:17):
I don't know what those couple of things would be.
Maybe one of those things is we're not going to
bring you back until we suffer an injury and then
we'll sign you. So stay in shape and then we'll
add you to the team. And maybe Hunter Renfro isn't
feeling that and he only wants to play in the Carolinas.
Maybe he's getting more money from somewhere else. I don't know,
but I didn't take that as necessarily a glowing review
(37:40):
of what Hunter Renfro did in training.
Speaker 5 (37:42):
Can and I think if he had earned a glowing review,
then he probably would have been kept on the initial
fifty three.
Speaker 2 (37:47):
But yeah, you are right.
Speaker 5 (37:48):
Coaches comments do not lend itself to a god that
they feel like that they have to have. And then
the comments at the end about Hunterson that you know
he has to figure out what he wants to do.
I think maybe does lend us to what you're saying
as the situations, the multiple things on the table are
maybe some situations that he's not too fond of or
(38:08):
something that he really has to think about. All right,
if I'm going to continue my career, do I really
want to do this? Because I think if it was
as simple as you're going to be a part of
the rotation at wide receiver on this football team, then
I think for him it probably would be a no
brainer that he's like, Okay, this is what I worked for.
But if it's situations like we said, could it be
practice squad? Could it be like you said, I'm telling
(38:29):
him just to kind of just keep grinding and wait
until something happens and they'll bring them back. You're just
not sure because Hunter Renfro seems unsure himself if he
wants to return. So I wonder what those text conversations
are consisting of. I'm not trying to make this more
complicated than it needs to be. All I'm trying to
do is interpret what the coach and the GM and
(38:50):
the Beat reporters and everybody is saying because Bicycle Herd
writes this in for you Wes specifically. First of all,
I want to hear West comment on how much Dave
just told us, because that wasn't enough.
Speaker 2 (39:01):
I'm sorry. I thought he said that was a nothing burger.
He said that wasn't a nothing burger. I don't think
it was a nothing burger either. I'm sorry for bicycle Herd.
I just didn't see the end apostrophe t on the
end of that. Yeah, I think there was something here.
I think there was. And that's what bicycle Herd is saying. Also,
it sounded like he was saying he's kind of mad
to be honest with you. I don't disagree. Yeah, that's
(39:25):
it didn't sound like I don't disagree with you. I
mean because a couple of things are on the table,
so whatever those opportunities may be. And then he also says,
I want to be able to count on Hunter being
as good as he was the whole time. I want
to be able to count on it the whole time,
as good as he was at the beginning of camp.
He did have the banged up he had the injury
the hamstring issue. This is a guy that is coming
(39:46):
back from al sort of colitis. Like, it's a lot
for my guy to overcome. Man, it's a lot.
Speaker 5 (39:52):
And I think too, you know when he said that
about being as good as he was at the beginning,
it's a natural progression when you haven't been a part
of such a rigorous sport for quite some time. Yeah,
when you got helmets and shorts on, it's gonna look
real good. But then for those types of players, but
when you start accumulating days of punishment and you're sore
(40:12):
and you're trying to you know, camp is a grin
and you hit from every level of football. Guys do
not enjoy it for the most part. When I watch
the Blueprint the other day and Robert Hunt was riding
in his truck and he said, I can't tell you that,
you know, I'm looking forward to camp. So you think,
for god, has been out of the game for a
year and change that. When you get back, man, and
(40:33):
your body's getting used to that type of physicality, Man,
it's hard to reacclimate yourself to it. And you're going
to have some physical decline and you're going to have
some up and down days.
Speaker 2 (40:44):
What is it worth to you because it is a
practice squad? Worth it to you a practice squad spot?
Maybe not? I don't want to put up with that.
You're telling me my whole life is practice. I have
the damn man, that's all going to get motivated. You
gotta love it, Yeah, you gotta love it. And how
to renfro just getting back into it. Maybe that's the
(41:05):
tarry on top of the insurmountable mountain it is to
get back to the NFL. So going back and forth,
here there's Dave Canalis's comments, and then here's Dan Morgan's
comments on how to renfro earlier today, who he says
he's also in constant communication with. But when I hear this,
I feel like he does kind of want how to
Renfro back.
Speaker 3 (41:25):
Yeah, I was.
Speaker 7 (41:26):
I was even texting with him last night, you know.
I told him I want him back here. I talked
to his agent. I talked to him. We're in constant communication.
Nothing's imminent, you know, but we're going to stay in
contact with him and we'll try to figure something out
about that.
Speaker 2 (41:44):
And a role is on the practice squad or fifty career,
you know, I think you know we're still trying to
decide that.
Speaker 7 (41:52):
You know, Hunter, I think is thinking through things, looking
at different options. So I think right now it's really
up to him with what he wants to do, but
we would definitely like to help them back here at
some point.
Speaker 5 (42:04):
You hear all of this and you think, what I think,
what are these conversations consisting of? Like, to me, it's simple,
am I going to be a part of the fifty
three or am I going to be on the practice
squad one of the two. Because he's saying there having
all this conversation, like, what is it like?
Speaker 3 (42:18):
To me?
Speaker 5 (42:19):
It's pretty simple here what's going on? And I think
you are right in your assumption that it sounds like
that they are looking at a practice squad roll for
him and him saying that he has to decide what
he wants to do. Because, as I said, if he
was going to be a part of the rotation, in
my mind it wouldn't be It would be a no
brainer for Hunter Renfro to come back and say, all right, man,
(42:40):
I made it, I completed my comeback. I can come
out here and play with these guys and be a
part of the rotation. But when you hit a guy
with the practice squad. Like you said, man, you have
to be up for that, and it is very topsy
turvy as far as practice squad life, like you could
be waived and different things can happen to you. There's
no security there, and I think for Renfer like he's
looking for something a little bit more secure, but maybe
(43:02):
his body won't allow him to get that. But that's
what it sounded like to me because all of that talking,
I mean about what, Yeah, I.
Speaker 2 (43:09):
Guess I could understand Hunter taking some time to try
to figure out what he wants to do, because here
we are not too far away from having just seen
the fifty three man roster finalized, and so I could
see that point of view. And when you get out
there and play, and you're in training camp and you're
taking all these hits, Mabe, your mind does change a
little bit for what it is worth to you, because Okay,
(43:30):
I come back and practice squad. My god, that's for
twenty four years old or twenty four years old. I'm
like thirty, and I'm coming back from all of this.
I feel like I should be on the roster. I
feel like I can contribute right away. And they're telling
me not really do. I want to stick it out
in practice for a few weeks and then see.
Speaker 5 (43:50):
If an opportunity presents it saying you hit it on
the head too, because I think that's how he feels.
He probably feels like, hey, I should be on this roster. Yeah,
I think that's probably it.
Speaker 2 (43:59):
Campus conatime app State all day today, we got Charlotte
all day tomorrow. It's app State the rest of the way.
Today it's our Pickham, it's our schedule. Projections. Who do
we think app State beats who do we think they
lose to? That's coming up in the Kauna Speltrady ninety
two to seven WFNZ
