Speaker 1 (00:00):
You're listening to the Wes and Walker Show. Here are
the two bad ones. Because you're an offensive lineman, because
you're a left tackle. There's a couple that pertained there.
What about the offensive grapple it's Wes. No, hell no,
that's not that's awesome. That sounds I thought that your
grandmother would come up with, ladies, gentlemen, the offensive grapple. Yeah,
(00:20):
I'm not even walking out to that. And Walker, this
one's even worse than offensive grapple? All right, you ready Wesselemania.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Yeah, no, hell no, that's not credit. I'm embarrassed to
even bring that to the airwaves.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
Yeah, only on Sports Radio ninety two point seven FM WFNC.
Speaker 4 (00:37):
Oh, that's fire. I don't care if you say.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
Welcome back. Poster is the West and Walker Show on
a Monday after the holidays. So lots of stories to
go around about what we've all been doing.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
From the channel of Volta Studios.
Speaker 3 (01:05):
Cebinjurylaw dot Com, that CV injury law dot com.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
One call.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
That's all the Carolina's personal injury lawyers walking. You had
something No, I did not have any You had something
going on? No?
Speaker 1 (01:16):
No, well I do have something going on. I forgot
my headphones because I brought them for travel.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
And so this is what happens. Man.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
Every time we come back from a break, there's always
just a little something that I don't have taken care of.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
Always a little something goes.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
And I'm telling you it's all about the reps, because
as soon as I break away from a show for
a couple of days, I come back and there's just
something wrong with me. Maybe there's just always something wrong
with even's emphasized when I go away for Hollida.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
All right, let's talk about it.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
We did have some football being played over the weekend,
so there is lots of talk about we got CFP
coming up this week.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
I can't wait. Let's talk about what did we learn found?
You know what? The dude drop that intro, Good morning class.
Speaker 5 (01:55):
I don't like disorder in my room. I'm in charge
of this class.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
I'm the warrior Chief.
Speaker 5 (02:03):
I'm the merciless god of anything that stirs in my universe.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
Who kind of schools this anyway? All right, let's start
this thing off.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
The ACC did not help itself this weekend with some
of the losses that they took. Now they are currently
five and three in Bowl games this season, so they're
doing pretty good, but they went one in three this weekend.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
Virginia won a squeaker over Missouri.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
In the Bowl down in Jacksonville, thirteen to seven, but
there were some low lights for sure to be had
by the conference. Clemson highlighted though, so they highlight the lowlights. Okay,
they lost to Penn State, who did not have most
of his staff true freshman quarterback with Kate Clubnick and
other decent weapons out there playing, and this is still
(02:46):
a Clemson team that was perceived to be better than
a Penn State team because both had twenty plus opt
outs in this one. There were a lot of teams
that weren't playing, but people still thought with k Klebnick
back there quarterback, that the Tigers should have been able
to get it done or at least have a much
better offensive showing than what they did. Number twelve, by
you rallied from an eleven point deficit in the second
(03:07):
half for twenty five to twenty four twenty five to
twenty one win over Number twenty four. Georgia Tech and
the pop Tars Bowl did love what they did with
the helmets and the end zone. It was pretty cool,
and the post game was pretty lit as well. Pitt
losing to ec You they had Mason Heinschel out there
and just looked anemic offensively, so that was not good.
(03:27):
KL lost to Hawaii during the week on a Wednesday,
But they still have plenty of opportunities to get that
Bowl Cup, the mythical Bowl Cup. I think that does
have a physical trophy if I'm not mistaken. But Duke, Miami, SMU,
and Wake are still left to play for the conference.
But this past weekend I thought that they lost some
key games that could have really helped the reputation of
(03:48):
the ACC.
Speaker 1 (03:49):
Well, I can't help but go to the Clemson game.
I know we're going to talk about it, but you're right.
I mean, especially when Clemson is supposed to be atop
the conference every single year. That's a team program that
you're supposed to be able to set your watch to,
and then you see them play a program that Big
ten they're supposed to be able to set their watch too,
and they win in a year where these are these
(04:10):
are the programs that have underperformed the most in each
of these conferences. One coach had, one program had a
coach fired, one team has had a fan base that
can't wait to fire the starting quarterback, and we'll get
to him there as well. At Clemson having the loss
that they did or it was ugly football. That's one
where you just don't leave with a good taste in
your mouth whatsoever. And you mentioned the conference as well,
(04:32):
it was another kind of shrug your shoulders and say,
this is the conference that allowed Duke to get to
the ACC Championship game and become ACC champions. This is
just the cherry on top of it. Already was a
not so great year for the conference.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
Ronal, What did you.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
Think about the ACC's lack of a great showing this weekend?
Speaker 2 (04:48):
Oh, it's pathetic.
Speaker 6 (04:49):
It's just what the conference continues to do to itself,
like every time that it feels like you have a chance.
I mean, we said it. This was a game that
Georgia Tech was in position to win. I know they
had some staff changes going on, but you still felt
like with Haines King out there, they'd be able to
find a way to win. The more disappointing performance, I
mean we saw it. We were hanging out with our
(05:09):
buddy Nascar Brad and our guy Alex Holbrooks watching the game,
the Clemson game. I mean, you know, they're Clemson fans,
and they said, this is the most disgusting offense that
they have really ever seen. And this is the worst
year that, according to Brad since he's been a fan,
that he has experienced. I mean, it was just a
(05:29):
pathetic showing. And I get it, man, it was cold,
but still it's got to be better than that cave
looked awful.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
All the time. They enjoy it very much.
Speaker 6 (05:40):
I mean, they brought Howard's Rock with them. Did we
not see that? They showed it like five times on television.
They thought it was like the greatest thing that's ever happened.
I just man, for Dabo, that's a tough year.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
Man. Seven is six.
Speaker 3 (05:53):
And the thing for Georgia Tech too, is that they
could say, yes, you are losing coordinators, no doubt about it.
Bust Of far Off one of the best in the business.
But this is a continuation of what's been happened to
the happening to you down the stretch. Georgia Tech has
lost plenty of games. Their season collapsed, There's no other
way to put it. They were lucky that they were
able to salvage it. And get into this bowl game
(06:14):
play against the quality opponent like BYU. So that's the thing.
They really had a chance to put a nice feeling
on this season. Now, I'm sure Georgia Tech fans, if
you're out there, hit us up on a FanDuel of
text line seven on four five, seven oh ninety six ten.
I'm sure that they feel like that this season kind
of failed in some ways because of the way it ended.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
Well, the way that you build the expectations in the
first half, and then Georgia Tech they had the big
win against Clemson. Perhaps some of it you saw the
foundation breakout from underneath everybody before we even got to
the second half because the Clemson win, big one.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
For Georgia Tech.
Speaker 1 (06:47):
But then it not really as the season goes on, well,
everybody's been the Clemson Tigers. And what's unfortunate about this
for the ACC is that you do see Clemson they
lose their game against Penn State. But also these are
the best teams the conference, All these teams right here,
you know it's Virginia they lose in the ACC Championship.
So that's the fact that Duke won is not anything
(07:11):
that you can point to as a positive for the conference.
With Duke winning in a way, it made the conference
look worse all right, So now Virginia's left out. The
only team that we have any hope for left is
with Miami and then the other best teams in the
top half of the conference, they all lose in a
bunch of different ways. ECU a good football program. We
talked about how that was one of the more intriguing
(07:32):
matchups of ball season. But even still Pittsburgh los into ECU.
That's not a great look for the conference. No Georgia
Tech after we thought they might get to the college
football playoffs somehow, you have Haines King, who was a
Heisman representative for most of the season, and now they're
losing to BYU, another team that was just on the
outside looking into the college football playoff. Yeah, it's a
(07:53):
bad look all around. When these are the teams that
we have to boast about. Those are the teams that
are supposed to represent everything that is the best place
part of the ACC football season, and they all take
L's clearly not a great look.
Speaker 3 (08:05):
And the thing is, like I said, Mason Heinshow plays
for pitt and East Carolina. They have defections on their
side as well. And not only that we haven't talked
about it, but Cayden Houser in the transfer portal, so
he was not out there for them either. So to
lose that game I thought was pretty tough. But this
does mark the end of the career for one cave
club Nick, And I want to know from Clemson fans,
(08:26):
how do you view him because some of the things
that we learned or that I learned this weekend, to me,
Dabo should have never been loyal to Kate Clubnick. We're
going to get into that. And he's the most curious
case of a productive quarterback in Clemson history just listening
to some of this stuff. Now, he did finish his
career with the twenty six and fourteen record is Clemson
started in QB. Every other quarterback who started a game
(08:47):
for Clemson from twenty fourteen to twenty twenty two had
a career record of one ten and fifteen. That's from
David Hale's Twitter page, So all those guys had only
one more loss than kay Clebnick did. But then when
we get into brass tacks, some of the numbers he's
won of six Clemson quarterbacks with twenty five plus career wins.
(09:09):
He did get to a CFP. He's second in Clemson
history with nine hundred completions. He had ninety total touchdowns
during his career. He concluded his career ranked ninth in
ACC history in passing yards.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
He passed up Trevor Lawrence.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
He joined Taj Boyd, Deshaun Watson, and Trevor Lawrence as
the only quarterbacks in Clemson history to throw for ten
thousand career passing yards. Clubnick also became the eleventh player
in ACC history to throw for ten thousand passing yards
and he's the fourth quarterback in school history to throw
and or gain eleven thousand career yards of total offense.
(09:44):
I mean that's a crap ton of production. And when
you look at these Clempson quarterbacks with whom he's in
there with, well, Taj Boyd, yes, he didn't get to
a CFPO, Win and Natty, but he was kind of
a fire starter. He started getting clemsonto some big bowl games.
They had won some games on him, and he was
uber productive. But we know DeShawn and Trevor won Natties,
they won ACC titles, all of that stuff. And so
(10:06):
now when you put Clubnick in there. It's almost like
when you're saying the names of these guys, you're gonna
go Todd's boy, man, what a player, Deshaun Watson, Oh
man fire, Trevor Lawrence, Oh sunshine, we can't get enough
of that young man right there. And then you just
go and as Kate club Okay, So how do we
(10:28):
look at Kate Clebney's career.
Speaker 2 (10:29):
I mean, so much production.
Speaker 3 (10:30):
Granted, he did start for three in the better part
of maybe his first year, he had some opportunities there,
but for three seasons he was the guy. He puts
up all these numbers, but I think he is not
going to be looked at very favorably by the Clemson faithful.
Speaker 1 (10:46):
All the Clemson fans that I know that are in
my life, they were ready to move on from him
as soon as they possibly could. And this was even
last year. This was even leading up to the twenty
twenty five campaign when Kate Clubnick actually gave us some
good football to look over. Even then, after coming in
as a potential top five, certainly first round pick, even still,
(11:07):
all the Clemson fans in my life, they were ready
to move on from him as soon as possible. And
I get it when you start to look at all
the other quarterbacks.
Speaker 2 (11:15):
That you just mentioned.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
Since twenty ten when Taj Boy took over, Clemson has
been extremely spoiled at that position until DJ you starts.
And now we've seen a couple of lackluster quarterbacks during
their time with the Clemson Tigers, even if they've seen
some ACC championship experiences.
Speaker 2 (11:33):
Caid was supposed to be.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
The guy that got Clemson back on track in that position,
and I don't think he ever really did. Maybe you
got back on track last year to the point where
you were able to get to your destination to some degree,
but man, it wasn't the pinnacle of the mountain. It
wasn't the destination. You get to the College football Playoff, Okay,
at minimum, that's what Clemson is hoping to do, especially
(11:55):
in the expanded field. But when you get there, are
you supposed to get destroyed in the first round? How
much of a success would you call last year having
won the ACC Championship, barely took a massive comeback to
win that game, and then get destroyed in the first
round of the college football players?
Speaker 3 (12:12):
Well, I thought I think destroyed is there? So I
thought they were right there. They had an opportunity to
win that game late.
Speaker 1 (12:17):
They just couldn't stop the run in the College Fotball
playoff from.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
When they played Texas. Yeah yeah, they would back, they're cutting. No,
they cut that to one score and then Texas broke
that big run that closed the game. But Clemson mounted
a big comeback fair enough.
Speaker 6 (12:31):
Rememberis of the first round games last year. But still no,
they mounted a big comeback.
Speaker 3 (12:36):
That was a one score game with Clinton having a
chance to stop them and get the ball back. But
they give up the big run that ultimately closed the game,
and that was the Achilles because remember a was on
fire in the second half of that game.
Speaker 2 (12:49):
Oh he threw for He threw for over three hundred
and that was.
Speaker 3 (12:52):
The number one secondary in the country and he lit
them up fair enough.
Speaker 1 (12:56):
It was twenty eight to ten going into halftime. It
was thirty one to seventeen going into the fourth. Perhaps
I'm doing a little more box score watching than actually
remembering it, but a.
Speaker 6 (13:09):
Game didn't feel as close as I think it got
to be.
Speaker 1 (13:12):
Honest, and even so, all right, yeah, maybe it's too strong.
I'll wear that. Would you consider its consider it a
success to barely win the ACC Championship and then get
beat in the College Football Playoff first round. I would
say probably not. And yet that's the most success that
we've seen from Kate Klebnick, right yeah.
Speaker 3 (13:30):
And so so yeah, And just to clean that up
a little bit, it got to thirty one twenty four
on a TJ. Moore pass from Kate Klemnick. It was
thirty one twenty four and then Jayden Blue broke the
seventy seven yard that made it thirty eight to twenty four.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
So what else courses it got?
Speaker 3 (13:45):
It felt like it felt like a stepping stone, because
I will admit when I say that the heat never
should have been loyal to him. Kate had me drinking
the kool aid after that game. I look at that
and I say, all right, Clemson is gonna be ready
to go next year. Yeah, andnother people don't feel like
they got. I don't want to lost on it, but
I admit I was wrong on that. It destroyed is
way too strong. I thought it was a bigger margin victory.
I just misremembered that.
Speaker 1 (14:05):
But fair enough do The question is do you consider
that a success given what we've seen from Clemson? Before
the Kate Clubnick era. To me, I would say probably not.
You barely win the a SEC Championship, you still get
to the College Football Playoff, you get beat by Texas
and in the first round.
Speaker 2 (14:21):
But all these other qbs, which.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
You even got from Kelly Bryant, who was the worst
quarterback since twenty ten, but even he goes on a
double digit winning streak with a great team around him.
But even with Kelly Bryant, you had more success with
him as the signal caller compared to what you had
with Kid Clubnick. And so that's my point. It's buddy
you're talking about the last fifteen years. It's dju that
didn't accomplish a whole lot. And I would put Kate Clubnick,
(14:43):
despite playing there as long as anybody, despite getting as
many seasons as almost anybody, you still didn't accomplish as
much as.
Speaker 2 (14:50):
Some of these other qbs.
Speaker 3 (14:51):
Yeah, I'll close them by saying I felt that this
year marred last year. What I mean by that, I
said that I thought that, yes, they went through a low,
like a lot of programs do it. They took a
little bit of a dip, and then it felt like
when they went down and played Texas as close as
they did that it felt like, all right, this is
why they were pre season two one, people were saying
(15:11):
national championship because they came down, they fought at Texas,
and people saying they got all these guys coming back. Okay,
club Nicknaw looks like he's ready to take the next step.
They're ready to go. And because this year was so
bad that it marred last year, when we come back,
we could join that some more if you like. But
we also got to go around the NFL. Tons of storylines.
Charlotte's owned Drake May with a historic performance. I'm surprised
(15:33):
finally doesn't have the jersey on today. This is the
Western Walkership were welcome back, folks. This is the Western
Walkers Show. Snoop Dogg theme today as I come back
(15:54):
from Arizona from the Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl had a
little bit.
Speaker 2 (15:59):
Of a viral.
Speaker 3 (16:00):
Don't know if you've seen that one. Yeah, man, lots
of fun out there, so we're doing that today. This
is the West and Walker Show from the Channel Vulture Studios.
Let us know how you're filling out there. Seven oh
four or five, seven ninety sixteen, You can also hit
us up on social media WFNZ on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
You can also hit us up at HTV Anthony, at
Westburn Underscore seventy two, at Walker Mail, and most importantly
(16:23):
at West d Walker. So we'll go around the league
in a second, but we say we'll sprinkle in tidbits
for you here and there of what happens. So got
to give you, guys, if you allow me to the
experience of how it went the entire day, because we
left out or we left off with me saying how
my assignment was to follow Snoop around the next day,
(16:44):
and we talked about the viral moment.
Speaker 2 (16:46):
But so it was funny.
Speaker 3 (16:47):
So I go and we're in the stadium, and you know,
I'm doing my little stuff, social media stuff, different things,
walking around, looking at the field, looking at the low
riders and all the little cool stuff that they have
around the stadium. And then you know, I'm wondering. I'm like,
is he here yet? Because he wasn't there at the time.
So then I look down. I'm at one end of
the end zone. I see down there a big entourage movement.
(17:09):
I say, yep, I said, that's got to be him
I see the dreads. I said, all right, yeah, that's new.
So if you guys were following that day on the story,
I show like, he gets out there, he starts throwing
a football around all over the place, taking pictures with cheerleaders,
all that stuff. So when I go up to him initially,
because I don't have time, I have to do the pregame,
So I go up to him initially, and I'm like, when.
Speaker 2 (17:30):
I first said, what's up to him?
Speaker 3 (17:31):
To introduce myself, it felt like, I'm not going to
say he was dry, like in a bad way. But
I was like, Okay, how's this going to go? I
was like, is he one of those guys? Is going
to be real charismatic on cameraon and off the camera
night as much? So then I told him, I said, hey, man,
you know I'm West Brian. You know I'm sidelining out
with CW. And anytime you want to come on and talk,
I've been told that. You know I'm going to stick
(17:52):
with you and then whenever you want to talk, you
can talk. And so he said, all right, man, you
know we can get down. You know we can get
down whenever you read, and you know I'll let you know. Oh,
So I was like, all right, cool. So we do
the first hit and he talks about the game and
the little stuff after that. So he's sitting down at
the time, and I'm also looking at how he's handling
people as they're coming across, because somebody brought like a
plate of food or something like that. I don't know
(18:13):
if they were trying to give it to him or
what was going on, And so he's given hand gestures.
Speaker 2 (18:17):
He's not even talking to people.
Speaker 3 (18:18):
He waves his hands, he gives a thumbs down, tells
him the shoe fly shoe to take the plate away.
I'm looking at that, and that kind of added to
a little bit of my anxiousness. I'm like, all right,
this is how you know what I'm saying he's going
to be. But after the game gets rolling, he's standing
up in the end zone. He's fully into it because
you guys know Snoop has the youth football program. They
(18:39):
put over forty guys in the league, tons of guys
in college. There were a couple of players in this
game that had played for him. So he stands up,
he's into the game. He's talking ball, and so we're
talking about it as well. And then we get the
first hit where he's like, all right, man, they driving.
He's like, you want to talk, we can talk. And
then I told you walking during the break, you know,
I went through my musical journey with him and telling
(19:00):
them all these different things. And as I'm telling them
to him, his chest starts puffing up with pride. He
gives that little smirk, and I'm telling him about you know,
the songs and the albums and stuff, and you know
how he was one of my five favorite ever.
Speaker 2 (19:14):
And he was like, talk about it, talk about it.
Speaker 3 (19:17):
Yeah, yeah, So it was pretty cool. But then as
we get into the minutia some of the stuff, because
yeah we're talking balling, we do more hits, But the
conversations in between when we weren't filming trash that was
talked about different things going on in the game, players, plays, etc.
Won't get into too much detail of that, but we
had that going on over there, and after a while,
(19:39):
like I said, it's like two old buddies. But some
of the highlights of conversation was with For one, he
said he's coming out with a new album that he's
going to have with a movie this time. Because I
was like, man, I said, you can tell in your
music that you just love to rap. You know what
I'm saying, Like, you do it because you love it.
And that's when he told me that. But it was
funny because when I brought up it was one break.
(19:59):
I said, no, I gotta, I gotta tell him this.
So we were sitting there in the break and I said, snoop,
I said, man, I said, now they got a little
time out right here. I said that murder was the
case remix. I said, one of the hardest rap songs.
And you know, artists and creators, they're just different the
way they describe things, the way they see things. And
so he starts like sounding out the beat to me
and like all this stuff as we said in there.
(20:21):
He's like, yeah, man, he was like, that's doctor Dre
at his finest. He said that beat man, he said,
he put that thing together. And then he starts going
bom bom. He's going through and he's telling me all
these different elements and I'm just sitting there like, man,
this is crazy, just the conversations that we're having and
then just moving around and it's just like a wave
(20:41):
of people, as I said, people just calling them left
and right, different things like that.
Speaker 2 (20:45):
Man.
Speaker 3 (20:45):
So we got two quarters where we were just down
there just chatting, talking about the game. He called one
guy soft for dropping a pass. He was like, got soft,
you know.
Speaker 2 (20:53):
What I'm saying.
Speaker 3 (20:53):
When he thought he was going out of the game
because he was hurting, He's like, got soft.
Speaker 2 (20:56):
He was like, that's soft Cuz we talked about that.
Speaker 3 (21:01):
And so it was just a crazy time, man, you know,
and just thinking about, well, my broadcasting career, you know,
just at the beginning, and all the hopes and aspirations
you have, and you're like, yo, I'm about to be
tagging around with Snoop Dogg all day long. It was
just a surreal experience just sitting there just talking to
him and just having him being candid like that.
Speaker 1 (21:20):
I have a question that mirrors what seven oh four
rights in. Did West get the contact so we could
get Snoop on the Western Walker Show?
Speaker 2 (21:27):
You know what?
Speaker 3 (21:28):
Had he come back in the fourth quarter. I thought
he was going to come back because in the third
quarter he goes up in the stands, he goes up
in the booth with Tom and Will. I thought he
was going to come back down for the fourth quarter.
And we were going to do more of what we
did in the first half. Yeah, but we weren't able
to do that. So I hate to say I was
not able to procure that for the booth.
Speaker 2 (21:48):
I think it was it was on my mind. I
think it was a little selfish with you.
Speaker 1 (21:51):
You know. I don't know why you didn't think of
the other half of the show, and we could have
had him on the show. There was so much to
talk about in the first there was. Well, to be
honest with you, it is the we've talked about this before.
What gets you to have a little bit of the
butterfly feeling in your stomach. For me, it would be
talking to some of the artists that I grew up
listening to about their art behind the scenes, getting that
(22:13):
one on one access. So to be honest with you,
as much as I want to hate on you right
now for not bringing Snoop Dogg onto the show, which
I'd probably get lost in the sauce myself.
Speaker 2 (22:22):
Yeah, I told her, I said.
Speaker 3 (22:23):
When I told him to break that we played the
music that we played during the break coming out of
the first break today and the songs called issues, and
he starts it out, you know, with the line of
Everywhere I Go and it's kind of sing songy and melodic.
And when I told him that we played that coming
back from break, he started to sing it. So he
was singing those tunes and just talking about different little things.
Because I also brought up the fact to him that
(22:44):
now when I go back and listen to your music,
I can tell when you're freestyling and when you're not.
And I told him that the shiznt was my all
time favorite song by him, and he was like, yeah,
he was like, that was a freestyle. He's like for sure.
He was like, I was free styling on that joint. Well, flounder,
let's check in. What is what are the FCC regulations on.
Speaker 2 (23:05):
I think you can get away with that. I think
we are.
Speaker 1 (23:09):
I think we are as well when you first started
to sound it out with the Snoop Dogg lyrics being
what they are, all right, just go ahead and over
over the dumb button.
Speaker 2 (23:17):
But I do think it's okay. Let check yep, We're
all good. We can say that song time. So yeah, man,
it was fun man.
Speaker 3 (23:21):
So if you guys have any more questions than anything
else that you would like to now on Walker you
say you have questions?
Speaker 2 (23:26):
Do you have any more before we go around the NFL?
Speaker 1 (23:29):
I mean, not not as much right now, because now
I'm just trying to I would think we can move
on with some Panther stuff. But the Snoop Dogg experience
is wildly cool, and for him to be it does
seem like he doesn't fit the description of never meet
your heroes. It seems like this is he doesn't know
that it's okay to me, doesn't that? So I like
(23:49):
that you had that experience, all right, So let's go
around to NFL. Let's talk about it.
Speaker 3 (23:53):
Some big storylines coming out of this Sunday, and we
will start at first with Drake May Myers podheist who
straight out of the Queens City. I'm sure he still
loves bo Jangles just as much as he did when
he was living here. Because he became the first player
in NFL history to complete ninety percent of his passes
while throwing for two hundred and fifty yards and two
(24:16):
touchdowns in a single game. They absolutely eviscerate the New
York Jets out there on Sunday. And Drake May, yes,
he has taken his lumps this year, but this has
been a phenomenal year for the New England Patriots, and
he was absolutely electric yesterday they win forty two to ten.
This game was never a game. He was absolutely outstanding.
(24:37):
Looking at Matthew Stafford's numbers this morning, I know he's
forty touchdowns to five interceptions, and I feel like that
he will more than likely get the MVP. And I
think that the biggest reason why. Not only the numbers
are great, but I think that because of the seniority,
I think people will feel like Drake May has plenty
of time to win MVPs, and I think that's what
we'll keep him from getting it. But I think that
this was his strongest case, even though it was against
(24:59):
the Jets. That's a that's just a performance that you
can't argue with. When you're the first to do anything
as long as the NFL has been around, is absolute
ly enough.
Speaker 1 (25:09):
Yeah, I don't know if it was the biggest but
to see him go for almost a ninety one percent
completion percentage while also throwing downfield, also accumulating five touchdown
passes with no interceptions, it's a great stat line. I
don't really care who you're playing against, but if you
needed a good team to see that kind of performance.
Speaker 2 (25:28):
To give it real value.
Speaker 1 (25:29):
Then let's just go back to the week prior when
he played against the Baltimore Ravens and he threw for
three hundred yards for the first time in his loan
season or his second season in the NFL, the first
time ever. He became a part of the three hundred
yard club, throwing for three to eighty and then going
for a couple of touchdown passes. Drake May has been
everything and then some. And I think when people discuss
(25:50):
the way that he's performed this year, I don't know
if you look at the lack of competition, because the
strength of schedule is not great for this team all
year long. At the same time, I don't think you
see Drake May and the throws that he's making downfield,
the accuracy, the power, the throw on the move, the
running ability.
Speaker 2 (26:07):
I don't think you look at.
Speaker 1 (26:08):
What Drake May is doing and you say, well, it's
easy to do it against all of these opponents. Hey,
even in the times where he's had to show up,
you split against the Bills, one of the best teams
that you've played so far, the Baltimore Ravens, have a
chance to get to the postseason, and you beat the
Baltimore Ravens twenty eight to twenty four, largely because of
your performance. And this was on the upswing for Baltimore
(26:28):
when they were playing a lot better. It wasn't like
you got the win against bad Baltimore in the first half.
Can't say enough about how well he's performed. I think
Stafford probably is going to win MVP if they wanted
to give it to Drake may I should rephrase that
it won't be because they're giving it to him.
Speaker 2 (26:43):
It will be because he earned it. Yeah, no doubt
about it, all right.
Speaker 3 (26:46):
Also, last night, the game of the night, one of
the games of the season, forty nine has beat the
Chicago Bears.
Speaker 2 (26:53):
Forty two to thirty eight.
Speaker 3 (26:55):
You had Kyle Shanahan making another case for Coach of
the Year, knocking all Ben Johnson. We're gonna talk about
that in a second, or maybe in the next segment
if we run over Finally, you know what to do.
Speaker 2 (27:06):
Let's go aheading at this thing, right now, let's do this.
Speaker 5 (27:10):
We'll look at this to see whether this is a
flagrant that was scary.
Speaker 2 (27:15):
Even I don't even know if I want to see
that again.
Speaker 5 (27:17):
You gotta think that's going to be a flagrant. The
question is is it a one or two? Let's see
him last night. Was Deebo Samuel out there?
Speaker 2 (27:30):
No he was not.
Speaker 3 (27:32):
Was Brandon Ayuk out there, No he was not. Was
George Kittle out there? Was Trent Williams out there? No
he was not. Let's talk about it. Brock Purdy last
night absolutely outstanding. Coming off of an outstanding game the
week before that, he followed his career high five touchdown
(27:53):
performance by throwing for three scores, running for two. Six
players since the AFL NFL merger with back to back
games with at least five touchdowns. He threw for three
to ZH three in this game. What else are you
gonna say? Efficiency charts show you that the man is
off the chain. He's been absolutely bonker since he came back.
(28:13):
I heard it this year. Mac Jones is the reason.
He's He's the better player. That's the guy you need
to go with. Rock Party isn't worth that fifty three
million NFL leader in touchdowns per game this season. He's
on a ridiculous pace if he was to play the
entire season. But no crazy defense as well. We can't
(28:35):
leave that out. But he's got twenty passing touchdowns twenty
three total this season, most by any quarterback with eight
or fewer starts since quarterback starts with first track a
nineteen fifth.
Speaker 2 (28:45):
So I don't want to hear it anymore.
Speaker 3 (28:48):
The man that's been to a Super Bowl, been to
two NFC Championship games, set all types of records, aren't
gonna be the most aggressive quarterback in the league. When
you talk yards per ten sometimes he makes my cheeks
clinch with some of the throws that he makes. Wow.
But Brock Purdy last night he danced on you on
the field. He danced off the field. If my homes
(29:08):
Josh Allen had did that play that he did last night,
we'll be talking about it. Oh, dadn oh Josh Allen.
He's oh my god. So once again, when you talk
about that receiving quarter he had out there last night,
Ricky Piercehall, who hasn't done much in his forty nine
er career thus far, I still got belief in.
Speaker 2 (29:25):
The young man.
Speaker 3 (29:26):
Jake Tongis, Juwan Jennings who I love. But DeMarcus Robinson,
Kendrick Bourne, Juice, and he goes out there and throws
for all those yards forty nine ers. Punter has been
chilling harder than a family on vacation.
Speaker 2 (29:41):
So I say all that to say I don't want
to hear it anymore. Brock Party after the comebacks.
Speaker 3 (29:45):
In the playoffs, after doing it this year without an
all star cast, that you guys love to say, that's
the reason he is who he is. You shut the
hold up and get the hurdle out of my face
because Brock Purdy is a.
Speaker 1 (29:58):
Monster top five status. Let's go okay. Brock Party was
excellent last night. So was Caleb Williams, so was this game.
And Brock Party really was great. I don't really have
anything to add, to be honest with you, because this
was a great performance. And I have nothing to say
about what Brock Party did not do because it was
really everything that he did do outside of the pocket
(30:19):
making plays with his feet. The only thing I would
criticize was his dancing. It was quite bad.
Speaker 2 (30:24):
You didn't like the duck. You don't like this duck? No,
it was pretty bad.
Speaker 1 (30:26):
I liked it, you know, And this wasn't even any
When you go to do the dougie on the football field,
it feels like everybody kind of knocks it out of
the park. It felt like Brock Party wasn't doing it
all that well, to be honest with you. But it
doesn't matter because what they're going to see when they
see him dancing on everybody, They're going to show all
of the highlight plays, and there were plenty of them
because Brock was excellent. Now what you have here, we've
(30:49):
got some great football with the Chicago Bears.
Speaker 2 (30:51):
Just follow their empic Sunday.
Speaker 1 (30:54):
Well, we just see every single game they play over
the last month. It's been down to the wire. It's
been Chicago winning, some been them losing some where they
made the cheese greater heads as popular as they are now.
They have this great game last night against San Franz.
Some crazy football. But anyways, yes San fran they look
very good. And if you wanted to talk about bringing
this local Dave Canalis winning Coach of the Year, I
(31:16):
don't think he would deserve it over a guy like
Kyle Shanahan with all the injuries, with performing as well
as he has in terms of a play calling style,
with Mac Jones, who as much as we can praise
Brock Party, I don't think Mac Jones deserves a lot of.
Speaker 3 (31:29):
Credit though, because the season would not him. I'm just
saying out for the people that was saying he should
be the guy and party should be sent out of time.
Speaker 2 (31:36):
He was great.
Speaker 1 (31:37):
Mac Jones was legitimately he saved the season above starter
level and even like sometimes Pro Bowl level. Good Brock
I think is a better QB. Just so we can
get rid of that. But Shanahan Coach of the Year.
Who are the candidates? Ben Johnson deserves considering, Mike McDonald deserves,
Mike Rabel, all the Mics, the simple names, the Kyle's,
(31:59):
the Mics, the Ben I think they all deserve it
over another simple name. And Dave over here in Charlot.
Speaker 3 (32:04):
All right, when we come back, we'll get back to
talking about Sapanthons, maybe a little NFL if you'll want
to talk about Josh Allen late late game as well,
little Derek Henry, but we'll get into that.
Speaker 2 (32:12):
But we're going to talk about Nick Gorton.
Speaker 3 (32:14):
Is he turning into Carolina's best defensive player down the stretch.
We'll talk about it on the other side. Sports Radio
ninety two seven WFN. We welcome back, folks. This is
(32:38):
the West and Walker show Sports Radio on ninety two
to seven w f n Z on a Monday. So
to give you another little piece before we get into
a little bit of Nick Gorton talk Man, when I said,
yesterday was the worst travel day of my life. And
I know it was for a lot of people because
it was the you know, Christmas weekend. People coming off
(32:58):
of that, the airports will just a madhouse. But just
to tell you, guys, so I had to catch a
connecting flight from Tucson to Phoenix, which went well. I
knew when I looked at the American app that there
was going to be like a twenty five to thirty
minute time gap between my connections. So I was already
a little leery about that because I was like, man,
(33:19):
I know how these planes are never on time stuff
like that. That's one of the things that gets on
my nerves. It's never on time. It's always something when
you land it feels like you're sitting there for forty
minutes before you can get off. So we get to
Phoenix and they had a mechanical issue with the steps
because it wasn't the biggest plane, so they had to
get like the little contraption or whatever it was for
us to be able to get off the plane. They
(33:40):
had a mechanical issue with that which caused us to
sit on the plane for an hour after we had
gotten off.
Speaker 2 (33:47):
It might have been a little more than that.
Speaker 3 (33:48):
People were getting frustrated because there were a lot of
Fresno State people on there that had to catch their
plane of Fresno. I had to catch MINA Charlotte, so
safe to say I missed my connection. Had to go
to customer service. That line, each customer felt like took
twenty twenty five minutes.
Speaker 2 (34:03):
It was probably.
Speaker 3 (34:05):
Five six people in front of me had to catch
the next flight, which fortunately they got that done. They
switched me, but I had to sit in the middle seat,
which I hate. But then luckily that worked out because
my man Rob Brightley was sitting behind me. He had
the whole row, so I grabbed that aisle seat. But
then I get there because I had sent my luggage
to Charlotte because it was too big, I didn't want
to put it under my seat going to Phoenix. On
(34:27):
the smaller plane that was in Charlotte get back baggage
lines got like ten people in it. Fortunately the guy
was asking around to see if Charlotte was their final
destination so they could get that bag. I ended up
getting my bag, but I was supposed to be home
around five o'clock. Didn't end up getting home till around
eight thirty ish. But just that little issue. I was like,
can you guys not find a different one and just
(34:48):
fix this one and give us a different one so
we can get the hell off of here.
Speaker 2 (34:51):
But that was not the case. So yes yesterday was.
Speaker 3 (34:54):
Just and then once we land in Charlotte, we sit
on the plane for like thirty thirty five minutes.
Speaker 2 (34:57):
I was like, this is just it's the dogs. Just
everything it was goes the dogs again.
Speaker 6 (35:04):
I mean, because I know you like that at that rate,
just bring out the inflatable slide and.
Speaker 1 (35:09):
Just that's what people like this. Let me slide. It's
the worst thing in the world. So plenty of problems
with flying. My biggest issue is when we land or
before we take off and we're chilling on the tarmac.
That's the number one most maddening thing about flying. If
we're chilling on the tarmac for anything longer than fifteen minutes.
I don't even mind taxiing so much. And it's all
(35:30):
mental because at least, it means you're heading towards your
destination and we're not just sitting there. But if I'm cramped,
which a lot of the times I am on a plane,
if I'm cramped and I'm just chilling, and it feels like,
here's the door.
Speaker 2 (35:44):
Is it locked? Okay?
Speaker 1 (35:46):
Is it fused to the plane? Does the hinge not
work anymore? What's are we physically locked in here to
the point where we can't know? Please let me out.
I'll jump, I will jump right now. And there was
a time where I flew to Indiana in the winter
vortex from a couple of years ago. I don't know
if you guys remember that winter vortex. Okay, it was
one of the most badass sounding storm names I've ever
(36:07):
heard in my entire life. I didn't even know those
things literally existed. I thought this was Someday after Tomorrow
type stuff. But no, we flew to Indianapolis in a
winter vortex. Okay, I understand if you might have some issues,
but we actually had no turbulence. We landed, it was
all good. And then we're chilling on the tarmac for
an hour an hour and a half. Oh, and I'm
(36:28):
clamped up in the window seat against the wall, and
I'm just a pretty big dude in general. We don't
have extra leg room where I'm sitting as well. So
when you talk about like social experiments or really when
you just want to learn what your breaking point is,
Wes almost it almost happened to me. Like you talk
about the person that loses their mind Lord of the
(36:49):
Fly style. It took an hour and a half for
me to maybe start to cause all sorts of trouble
on that plane. Hour and a half, which is a
long time, but it's not a real long time for
me to just letely lose my mind. I was mentally
weak in that moment, and I'm not proud of it,
but I was really almost fetal position, rocking back and forth.
It was brutal. And so I feel your pain, just
(37:09):
chilling on the tarmac as long as you.
Speaker 3 (37:11):
Yes, Hurricane Carl says, West first world problems. Yeah, I
get it, but it is frustrated and like I said,
walking for taller guys like us, you know, bigger guys.
That's why I said, when I get to the point
where I can regularly do it, because if I get
a reasonable upgrade to first class, like I take it.
I'm gonna take it, okay, but I'm like I get
if I get to the point where I can afford
(37:32):
it on the regular, I'm gonna do it. And like
I said on Twitter, yes said, I'm just gonna be
like man and just get a cruise. I'm just gonna
get a bus and then just just drive everywhere.
Speaker 6 (37:40):
By the way first world problems. Did anybody act like
this was a big problem. I mean, come on, people,
I hate this text line.
Speaker 2 (37:49):
Sometimes.
Speaker 6 (37:49):
My god, we just brought it's a problem that some
of us have.
Speaker 2 (37:54):
We're not comparing it to homelessness.
Speaker 5 (37:56):
God.
Speaker 1 (37:57):
So when we discuss what our breaking point is, mine
is being on a tarmac for more than an hour.
Flounders is a possibly insulting text message. It doesn't even
have to definitely be insulting. It could be sarcastic. But
that's flounders breaking point. Yeah, no doubt.
Speaker 3 (38:11):
About it, man, And I only complain when it's warranted man,
and it is.
Speaker 2 (38:15):
You know, it just gets frustrated.
Speaker 3 (38:16):
But Yah, always start the dogs in that because ever
since you said that when I gave my Superman review,
I always say that, even sometimes to make myself laugh.
But let us know you like travel stories. Do you
enjoy flying? What are the things that get on your nerves?
I mean, because I do enjoy airports and I do
like you know, traveling for the most part. But those
things you get on your nerves, all right, Nick Gordon,
he comes out, has another pretty solid game, he gets
(38:37):
a sack. He's a little bit disruptive back there as well.
And so when you look at this young man and
what he's been able to do, and you look at
his totality on this season, and he's been kind of
a slow burner, but he's tied for second on the
team and tackless for loss. He is also second on
the team in sacks with four and a half and
it just feels like that he's been coming on as
(38:58):
of late. So he's got the third most sack by
rookie in franchise history as we sit here today. He
had a sack and his first career forced fumble in
the second quarter of this Sasas matchup. He also has
twenty eight quarterback pressures this season, and so that passes
Brian Burns for the most by Carolina rookie since the
stat was first tracked in twenty sixteen, and so yes,
(39:21):
we have to be provocative with our line of questioning.
But this is a young man where you see the size,
you see the tenacity. We heard some of the comments
from him, like Julius said, and remember the Titans attitude
reflects leadership when we heard that from him earlier in
the season, talking about guys not having their mind right.
And as I said that, he's been a guy that
you look up and he's been making some nice splash
(39:43):
plays as we come down the stretch of this season.
And so do you feel like that he's potentially turning
himself into Carolina's best defensive player.
Speaker 1 (39:51):
Oh, I think that's too far, I STI would say
Derek Brown is the best player and the guy that
this team relies on the most. What Nick Gorton has
done though here recently has been really impressive, especially for
a rookie. And what I really like is that it
gives validation to Dan Morgan's draft strategy. From this pass
selection process, you select tea Mac, You turn down some
of the first round picks that were offered to you
(40:13):
from all these other teams San Francisco, La, Dallas, all
these teams they wanted t Mac, and you decided, no,
we think he's too good to pass up. We'll use
a top ten selection on him, because we also know
the other position of need around here at edge, we
need to pass rush a lot better than what we have.
We can get some of those guys a little bit
later on with this being such a deep class at
(40:34):
the pass rush slash edge position, and Nick Gordon was
that guy you decided to trade up for him because
of how much you appreciated his tape leading up to
the draft process, and all he's done is giving you
good grades. He's third for rookie edge rushers in total
snaps so far this season. Pro Football Focus credits him
with seven sacks on the year. If you look at
(40:55):
where that ranks among all the rookies this season, that's
only behind James Pierce. But the grades in the analytics
would tell you that Nick Gorton has had a lot
better year than what James Pearce has, especially when it
comes to stopping the run, where s Gordon isn't terrible,
and I do think he's going to be an overall
plus at stopping the run. I think when he doesn't
do a good job against the run west, I think
it's like edge integrity.
Speaker 2 (41:16):
I don't think he sets it.
Speaker 1 (41:17):
And that's where you see some of those moves get
broken off on the outside when he's supposed to contain
other than that. It's not because he's soft. He's not
light in the keyster. That's not what Nick Gordon is.
This guy has a one hundred and ten percent motor.
He plays really hard in a way that's attention grabbing.
I might be watching something else, but Nick Gorton flying
all over the place, he grabs your attention. I think
(41:38):
a thumbs up hit, especially with the way that you
chose to attack it right Like, we're already talking about
a top ten class. We're seeing what t mac is doing,
and clearly he's had his moments. He was not good yesterday.
Doesn't deserve any credit t Mac. Overall, the guy is
in consideration, at least for Rookie of the Year. So
you hit on that pick so far and you don't
draft Jalen Walker, who also looks good.
Speaker 2 (42:00):
No hate on Jaylen Walker.
Speaker 1 (42:02):
James Spears has enough about him to where we don't
know if that's an outright miss. You might question what
Atlanta did giving up a first round pick to go
get him.
Speaker 3 (42:09):
I mean, yeah, he does have eight and a half
sacks and eight tacks for loss, so he's he's still
got parts of it game that need to grow, no
question about yeah.
Speaker 1 (42:16):
If so, right, do you care more about the sacks
or do you care more about the bad grade that
he's been given and the inability to stop the run.
Even so, the guy has plenty of talent to possibly
make him hit. I don't know if I would give
it either way. Nick Gordon looks good. Yeah, and you
just the way that you attacked the first two rounds,
specifically the draft picks that have to count, the guys
(42:39):
that have to show you something as being a star
wart going forward. Both of the guys that you selected
at eighth and in the fifties, they both look like
you had a pretty damn big hit on him. Yeah,
I don't think he's their best defensive player. I just
want to be provocative there.
Speaker 3 (42:51):
But I do think that he's making a case to
be the second best in my opinion, as far as
what he's been able to do, you know, up front
and starting to make plays, and so you think about
his ceiling and what is it? And I think that
the way he's starting to get better as the season
goes along. I think that his ceiling is high, and
I think that when you talk star or superstar potential,
(43:13):
I'll go star for now, just to temper it just
a little bit, because I think if we were talking superstar,
you know, he would be approaching double digit sacks, double
digit tackles for loss, or have over that amount. So
I won't annoint him with that, but I will say
I do see star potential in him where he will
be a key piece of this defense going forward.
Speaker 2 (43:32):
No, I agree with you.
Speaker 1 (43:33):
I think, Okay, if you're looking at superstar stuff, you're
putting everything together. Does he have the extreme bendiness coming
across the edge, all of the tools that are God gifted.
I don't know about all of that, right, I don't know.
And the other thing is when teams drafted rushers in
the first round or somewhere high up, a lot of
those guys produced right away. I mean, you'll see some
(43:55):
of that stuff. There hasn't been a ton of that
this year. It's not that they've been bad. It's just
Abdul Carter, who is considered the best edge rush prospect
in a deep class. Abdul Carter doesn't have all of
the wild sack totals, right, nobody does. James Pierce does
lead all the rookies in sacks, and it's not like
it's this crazy amount. If we're going a normal sixteen
(44:15):
game season. Well, he's already given us the eight and
a half. Good not superstar like we've seen from some
of the other rookies that have come in and absolutely
destroyed it. Star seems like the right kind of ceiling
for him right now, and he could break that. It
could go either way, but so far, so good. The
one thing about Nick Gorton that'll end with is that
he's got the kind of motor that allows you to
(44:35):
