You were listening to the West and Walker Show.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
I just wasn't in the SpongeBob like that. I mean,
you nasty looking up a cartoon. I couldn't get into it.
Speaker 1 (00:07):
It's wes too nasty. Yeah, it's like we get weird.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
I don't necessarily like animals being animated and stuff. And
then with SpongeBob and all that stuff, I just couldn't
get into it.
Speaker 3 (00:18):
And Walker, that takes like what sixty percent of kids
movies away from you.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
So like a lion, so like a cartoon that's different.
Speaker 4 (00:27):
Only on Sports Radio ninety two point seven FM WFNC.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
The SpongeBoy just had a lot of ugly creatures. That's
the best way for me to put it. It was
a lot of Joe Preachers, the talking crab that was
ugly as hell. SpongeBob was ugly, Like I couldn't get
onto that. I couldn't get into it, ugly as hell.
(01:00):
Welcome back, folks, This is the West and Walker Show.
On a do It to It Tuesday Walker. We forgot
to mention that as well. Is do it to It
Tuesday from the channel of Vulture Studio. Cvinjurylaw dot Com
at Cvinjurylaw dot Com one call. That's all the Carolina's
personal injury lawyer.
Speaker 1 (01:19):
Let's talk about it.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
We did the twenty twenty four season recap yesterday of
the Clemson Tigers. Now let's get into twenty twenty five
and offense many expect to be one of the best
that Clemson has ever seen.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
Finder, you know what to dude, drop that intro. It's
the sound you've waited much to hear. Bring your own guts.
Speaker 5 (01:39):
It's caused some of your greatest triumphs and.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
Your biggest heartbreaks.
Speaker 6 (01:48):
True fren fro little that makes another enormous play.
Speaker 1 (01:55):
It's the option at Georgia Tech.
Speaker 6 (01:57):
It's Howard's Rock, Smoking Miami waxing Talkstown.
Speaker 1 (02:03):
And every Saturday you tap that sign, the weights is over.
College football is here, Yu, spell it.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
Spell it out, baby, the Clemson Tigers, all right, and
it is quarterback naming season real quick before we get started.
Another Dame has just named CJ. Carr their starting quarterback
this year. So there's any.
Speaker 7 (02:29):
Interesting They said Menshi was doing pretty well, and yeah,
so that's another quarterback domino to fall.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
And so the big domino for the Clemson Tigers is
Cade Club Nick. And this offense looks to be loaded. Folks.
You're talking about a team that has been deprived of
sorts because this was a program that was turning out
wide receivers left and right, turning out running backs left
and right as well, and so they had kind of
(02:56):
taken a back seat in that department. But this season
they look to be app absolutely locked and loaded this
year on that side of the ball. And in my opinion,
the record setting offense of twenty eighteen that included Kelly
Bryant and Trevor Lawrence before Trevor Lawrence took over, I
could see this offense being the best since then. Not
saying they're gonna be as good, but I do think
(03:18):
that this is Clemson's best offense since they had that
group seven years ago.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
The only thing that you're worried about compared to some
of those other offenses from years past is the running game.
They've had a really solid to outright great running back.
Really with each of those units, you've had fil Maffa.
Even last year, who wasn't supposed to be the best
running back. It was supposed to be Will Shipley that
everybody was really excited about.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
It feels like fil MafA.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
Kind of stole some of that luster from Will Shipley,
but even still, that's a good running back due to
have in your backfield for the most part. Now film
Mafa's gone, and that's the biggest question about this offense.
There is no Travis etn There's nobody of that sort.
They might feel good about what they can have under
the converted wide receiver that is escaping me right now,
going to run the Randam Randall. Yeah, so I know
(04:03):
they're high on Adam Randall making that transition. But that's
the only thing West that you worry about. Compared to
the last I don't know five years or so, wide
receivers are better. Kate Clubnick is better than what you
had with old Kate Clubnick and what you had with
dj U after he took over. So I would totally
agree with you. This offense does look to be much
better than what you've had in years past.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Yes, And so let's start to get into it. We're
gonna break it all down quarterbacks, roy receivers, running back,
o line, you name it.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
But we start with the quarterback.
Speaker 2 (04:32):
And so Kate Clubnick last year he was a guy
thirty six touchdowns, six picks, random for another four to
sixty three and seven scores. He enters this year with
over seventy one hundred career passing yards, fifty seven passing touchdowns,
another seven hundred and eighty four rushing yards and thirteen
touchdowns rushing in his career. And so it was a
(04:54):
little bit of a mixed bag for Kate club Nick
last year because he comes out against Georgia and it
looks like it's going to be more of the same. Now,
I will say, and you know, coming from me, this
is legit because I was not a k Clubnick guy.
I did not like their game playing against Georgia. I
thought they were very conservative. I thought that this was
a group that was playing not to lose, and obviously,
(05:17):
by the design of the coaches, they feared that Georgia defense,
and rightfully so. But I thought that they could have
been a little bit more loose out there as well.
But then he goes and he has the South Carolina
game because he gets a lot of good will going
he has to comeback versus Pittsburgh, to which he runs
in the final touchdown. Then the South Carolina game happens,
(05:38):
and then you feel like, all right, he plays well
in the ACC Championship, But you think that when they
get to the college football playoffs, it's going to be
a tough hill to climb. He comes out and plays really,
really well, over three hundred plus yards, multiple touchdown passes
against the number one pass defense in the country and
one of the nation's top two or three defenses. So
what do we feel like kay Clubney can do to
(06:00):
best his performance from last season? Because it was very
gaudy when you talk forty three total touchdowns to just
six interceptions.
Speaker 3 (06:07):
Well, I do wonder. Now, Okay, a couple things have changed.
We just talked about the running back position. Is there
going to be a little more pressure on your shoulders
to move the football up and down the field without
such a strong running game? And it is the offensive
line that looks a lot better. So maybe I'm making
too much of it. I don't mean to. It's just
that you don't have that star back coming the seasons,
(06:28):
So you just don't have the star back anymore. Do
you have more pressure to move the football yourself? The
other is this is the big one, you have expectations
this season. Kate Klubnick had expectations going into his bad
football year and he didn't live up to the hype.
So have you learned from all of that? And now
can you learn from that experience so much so that
(06:49):
after the thirty six hundred yards that you threw for
last year, are we talking about thirty eight just a
little bit above mostly the same? Are we getting into
some real special territory where you're flirting with four thousand
passing yards? Is the running game also going to be
on your shoulders too, in the point of you running
the football a little bit more? And we know that
he did it a lot last year, having almost five
(07:10):
hundred yards rushing. It really impressive statistical season from him.
I do think there are plenty of worlds where he
actually builds off of that, because so much of this
offense has to come from what Kate is going to do.
If the offensive line is good, if Kate also was
using his legs quite a bit, and your wide receiving
corps is something a lot stronger than what you've had
the last couple of years. I think those are some
(07:32):
of the ways that you can see even gaudier numbers
from Kate Clubnick. We can get into the schedule too.
I think it does line up somewhat favorably for them,
even LSU. LSU has some talent defensively, but man, that's
not been a good defense the last couple of years
under Brian Kelly. So maybe even in the opener, you're
talking about a very different situation than the opener going
against LSU compared to Georgia.
Speaker 2 (07:52):
Yeah, and so for Kate Clubnick, I think the way
he can bess what he did last year is he
can have a similar year statistically to win. Okay, because
when you talk about his big game reputation at this point,
after the ACC tied to win in twenty twenty two,
did not play great against Tennessee and the Orange Bowl,
they start four and four in twenty twenty three, and then,
as we said, the aforementioned performances against Georgia against South
(08:16):
Carolina left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths.
And so I think for him, you talk about the schedule,
welcome mail, it is very favorable. You play LSU, and
then you don't have a team that people feel like
is a real formidable opponent until October eighteenth versus SMU,
and then after that you still have teams that people
like but aren't going to look at as real, real threats,
(08:38):
even though Louisville Beach you last year, Florida State. We'll
see what happens there. But then South Carolina on November
twenty ninth, And so for Cade, you look at it
as to me, he's got two big opportunities because I
think that they can be SMU, and I think that
he can play well against SMU. But you're talking about
right out of the gate, how much more pressure can
you put on the situation you're going up against get
(09:00):
at nus Meyer one of your peers. People think they
could be a first rounder with you, people that think
he could be in New York with you. This is
a huge matchup against a big brand at home at night.
You've got everything to establish the fact that you are
the clear Heisman Trophy contender.
Speaker 1 (09:18):
And so I think that's what he's got to do.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
Just win, baby, like Al Davis says, okay, And to me,
that's what gets him to New York. I think he
could have pretty much the exact same year statistically, But
if some of those wins in those big games, or
some of those losses in those big games turns into wins,
then I think that he will be in New York
for the ceremony because Clemson will be a bona fide
national championship contender, and he will be one of the favorites,
(09:44):
if not the favorite, to win the award.
Speaker 3 (09:46):
Love the LSU take. Totally agree with you there, and
I actually think it does Lenamore a little bit more
favorably to Kate club Nick then it does Garrett Nussmeyer,
who I'm also very high on coming into this season.
I just think Clemson's defense is going to be better
than lsu'sed They've been actually quite bad for the last
couple of seasons down there in the SEC, and so
what I'd love about the way it sets up for
(10:07):
CAD is you go into this monster matchup. Everybody's football
hungary because they've been deprived of big time college football
for so long. It's going to be an awesome day.
And then you settle in, You get nice and cozy
to tune in for the tiger bout between both Clemson
and LSU. And then it's kid Klubnick in front of
everybody watching with the allura of LSU on the other
(10:30):
side balling out. Nobody's gonna do the research on well
their defense isn't really all that great. They've actually had
some real issues.
Speaker 1 (10:37):
They have a good linebacking defense issue. Yeah, I know.
Speaker 3 (10:40):
I just some of the edge rushing stuff when we
were looking at them for South Carolina, like they've got
a good stable. They don't have any stars like guys
I expect them to get drafted in the first or
second round.
Speaker 2 (10:52):
I know he got hurt, that's right, but he still
expected to be if he can bounce back, and I
know that.
Speaker 3 (10:56):
I guess he's kind of moving towards off ball stuff
for LSU asn't he ars he's.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
He's been a help. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (11:04):
Yeah, they do a little bit of everything when they
kind of move him around.
Speaker 3 (11:08):
So for me, their linebacking corps is great off ball linebackers.
I do think I was going to be quite an issue,
but I just I think it lines up well for
Kate Klubnick to come out and ball on a monster
stage in front of everybody, to set himself up for success.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
And so if you want to go into the guys
that he will be throwing the football to.
Speaker 1 (11:26):
This group is tremendous.
Speaker 2 (11:27):
Antonio Williams led the team with seventy five catches and
eleven touchdowns.
Speaker 1 (11:31):
He's the elder statesman of the.
Speaker 2 (11:33):
Crew and also looked at as a highly touted draft prospect.
Speaker 1 (11:37):
TJ.
Speaker 2 (11:38):
Moore comes in as a true freshman, catches forty five
passes Bryant westco seventeen yards per catch on forty one catches.
He comes out last year in the ACC Championship game
eight catches, one hundred and forty two yards, two touchdowns.
Those guys are speed merchants, while Moore brings size. Then
also you talk about Tristan Smith. Did they bring over
(11:59):
from Southeastssouri State. He caught seventy seventy six passes, six touchdowns,
and so this crew they've been missing kind of that
Mike Williams type of guys, some of those bigger receivers
that they had that will go up and get those
fifty to fifty balls. Well, Tristan Smith is the guy
that's going to do that for them and this crew.
He lit it up in the spring. They're very excited
(12:19):
about him. Then Olsen pat Henry looks to be the
guy that takes over for Jake Brenningstool, and so this
receiving corps has got to have you really excited. Tyler
Brown was a guy that was looking to be the
next great Clemson receiver just a couple of seasons ago.
He's going to be a guy that's going to be
running with the twos. But the talent's still there. So
(12:39):
I think that this is one of their best receiving corps.
They have the potential to be one of their best
regardless of what year that we're talking about. But I
think the Clemson White House will be absolutely special.
Speaker 3 (12:51):
If I were to use one word, seems like they
compliment each other well. Also feel like Antonio Williams might
be more of your possession guy while Westco can be
the deep threat. And you look at their target share.
Antonio Williams had one hundred last year compared to seventy
four for Bryant Westco. Maybe that changes just because he
was a little bit younger. I also just think that
they compliment each other quite well with what you discussed.
(13:12):
So for me, the fact that you have a bunch
of talented receivers that also just fit like a nice
little puzzle piece for Kate Clubnick to expose whatever matchup
he wants to expose. It's the offense that the defense
is going to be fantastic, and you have the star
players on that side of the ball. Maybe Bryant Westco
and Antonio Williams aren't the offensive equivalent to Peter Woods
(13:36):
and which you have in TJ.
Speaker 1 (13:37):
Parker, but they are quite good. And Kate Clubnick being the.
Speaker 3 (13:40):
Orchestrator of that offense, I think that's why you're going
to have such a strong team on both sides of
the line of show.
Speaker 1 (13:45):
Yeah, and TJ.
Speaker 2 (13:46):
Moore over at six three two oh five and he
can run like the wind as well.
Speaker 1 (13:51):
So this is a complete group. As you said, welcome out.
Speaker 2 (13:53):
They all have different types about them and they can
all hurt you in many different ways. So when we
come back, we're going to go into that Clemson backfield
in the offensive line, and we're going to answer the
question is this the most complete offense in college football?
Heading into the twenty twenty five season on Sports Radio
ninety two seven WFNZ, And just like that, folks, we
(14:19):
return here on the West and Walker Show. We want
to remind you to hit that follow button on the
Socials WFNZ, on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. You can also
hit us up at AHTB Anthony at Walker Mal at
West Bryant underscore seventy two and most important at West
and Walker having a breakdown, Yes, discussion, let us know
(14:40):
on the FanDuel text line seven oh four five, seven
oh ninety six ten, how are you feeling about this
Clemson offense in twenty twenty five? That just might be
how the Clemson fans are feeling about this offense.
Speaker 1 (14:51):
Doddy. Yes, yeah, with all the.
Speaker 2 (14:53):
Talent that they have, We've talked about the quarterbacks and
the receivers there, but now let's talk a little bit
about those running backs Walker Mail because it feels like
that it is in enigma right now, but it also
feels like they've got talent there. They could end up
breaking out and really surprising a lot of people. And
we will start with Adam Randall, converted wide receiver. Took
(15:15):
his first snaps in the loss to Texas in the
College Football playoff game. He had forty one yards in
the first half and had forty four yards on four
carries for the game. But there's been a lot of
buzz about him in the spring at that six to
two hundred and thirty five pound size. Now I've heard
people throwing out silly stuff like Derrick Henry and things
of that nature, because of his size and because he
(15:37):
has shown some promise. I'm not even going to get
into that, but this is a guy that a lot
of people are saying could be a wild card for
this team and really ending up being really end up
being a big time stud by seasons in.
Speaker 1 (15:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (15:52):
And I think with the offensive line being better than
what it's been in previous years too, that that's going
to help the running back position, even if you don't
have that star that they've had for quite some time,
it feels like Clemson always has impressive running backs, even
before Dabo. We can go to the thunder and Lightning
with James Davis and CJ. Spiller, it's been a little
bit running back you, even if we would call them
wide receiver you. For quite some time then they had
(16:14):
the power Rangers. What has been I think a little
more stable for them, going all the way back to
the pre Dabo era, it's been running back, which is
weird to see them not have a stable of guys
that they're just ready to deploy and go immediately and
get a first All acc team selection. So the offensive line,
the fact that they are also as strong as they've
been in quite some time. I think that's going to
(16:35):
help whoever is back there.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
Yeah, and also too, a guy that a lot of
people are looking at. Gideon Davidson, a freshman from Virginia
ran for over two thousand yards and thirty four touchdowns
as a senior. He is also a guy in the
backfield that a lot of people are expecting a lot from.
And so talk to one of my Clemson people, and
they were saying how out of all the running backs
that they brought in for recruiting visits and things of
(16:59):
that nature, that he was the one that they really targeted,
that they really really wanted. So they really believe in
his talent. And so we remember when Etn took over
as a freshman for Clemson and how that career ended up,
so we could see Gideon Davidson maybe have something similar.
Speaker 1 (17:16):
Then they also have Jay Haynes.
Speaker 2 (17:18):
And Jarvis Green among others back there, and David Ezia
moo May.
Speaker 1 (17:24):
I don't know if I.
Speaker 2 (17:25):
Said that correctly, but they've got a few other running
backs that could probably make a little bit of noise
for this team. Could end up being a running back
by committee with some talented guys in the offensive line.
We talked about it. The tackle spots. They're looking pretty
good there. Blake Miller, right tackle, looks to be an
NFL guy. We've been putting out our twenty twenty five
players to watch over the ACC Digital Network. Blake Miller
(17:47):
among these seven or eight Clemson guys that we have
in that twenty five to watch, and so he has
been in there too and yours truly put together the
tape for Blake Miller. Very talented guy. They've got Tristan
Lee returning for his final year at Clemson, so they've
got plenty of experience at the tackle position and in
the situation at guard, it is a little bit more
(18:07):
unstable than the tackle position, but they still like what
they have there. Walker Parks is a guy he's had
some injuries in fall camp, but they like what he
brings to the table as the oldest guy in the
group and then as center Ryan linthecom he is back
for his senior year as well.
Speaker 1 (18:25):
So they've got experience there.
Speaker 2 (18:27):
And another thing that they like about this group is
that they've got quality depth.
Speaker 1 (18:31):
They feel good about.
Speaker 2 (18:32):
The guys who are behind these guys, so if they
do suffer some injuries, this old line should be good,
but you said it, this offensive line looks to be
one of the best that they've had in a while,
and so that can only make everybody else better.
Speaker 3 (18:44):
The fact that they have four returners on the offensive line,
and you mentioned some of the names, so I won't
regurgitate that. I just will say that if you have
all of these upgrades at every single position, if you
think Kate is going to take a step up, he
doesn't even really need to take a mon monster leap.
If you just give me for the most part, which
you gave me last year, cool offensive line takes a
(19:05):
step up. Great wide receiving core, same thing awesome. If
you don't have this massive improvement at running back, even still,
you're going to be just fine running through the ACC.
Running through an opponent at LSU where maybe I'm just
maybe I'm just dead wrong, and their defense really turns
it around because they do have talent. It is one
of the top football programs in all of America, but
(19:28):
just the last couple of years under Brian Kelly, it's
not been as strong of a suit as it has
been before that.
Speaker 1 (19:33):
So LSU rest of the ACC.
Speaker 3 (19:37):
I think Duke I guess is going to be your
biggest test defensively that you have in the ACC because
many dias we respect SMU has talent also, and then
of course you have South Carolina at the very end
of the season. I do think this is an offense
that you might be talking about as putting up the
best numbers in the country given everything that they can do.
Speaker 2 (19:54):
Yeah, when you look around the country, so many teams,
I'm missing so many things at different spots, and for Clemson,
the only thing you really look at is their running
back crew. I mean, I would dare to say this
is one of, if not the most complete offense in
college football because they have so much talent, a returning
veteran quarterback who really ended the year in a nice way.
I really love what this offense brings to the table.
(20:17):
And I've been studying up on a lot of other
teams around the country because even if you look at
you know, Penn State, with Drew Allen coming back, their
offensive line would be good. They've got both of those
thousand yard running backs returning, but they've got questions at
wide receiver and so that has to be answered for them.
You look at Ohio State, They're replacing a lot on
that side of the ball.
Speaker 1 (20:36):
Tons of teams, you name it.
Speaker 2 (20:38):
And so Clemson has those guys that have been there
their season, and so I do think that this is
the most complete offense in college football and I would
be really surprised if they don't play like it.
Speaker 1 (20:47):
Yeah, agreed, especially in their conference.
Speaker 3 (20:50):
And then the only reason I think you would put
some of these other offenses above them. Do you have
any dual threat guys that are just going to put
up crazy immediate Heisman contender numbers. I think Leonoras in
the same state is one of the guys that could
do something like that, where you're just such a wow
factor at both running and throwing the football. I caid
(21:10):
the rushing statistics are a little sneaky, and I wonder
if those come down because you just trust him a
little bit more.
Speaker 2 (21:15):
So, and that was a huge part of his game
coming up in high school. He was a dual threat
guy coming out of high school, and so that would
be the only thing.
Speaker 1 (21:21):
Though.
Speaker 3 (21:22):
They're gonna be dynamic, and I'm in even with us
questioning the running back position as much as we are,
it's not a concern. It's just how good are they
going to be. I don't think that they're going to
be so bad to the point where they can't run
the football, they can't get any progress on short yardage situations.
I think they will have some explosivity. It's just the
fact that we haven't had that be the biggest question
(21:46):
coming into a year.
Speaker 1 (21:47):
But I have such high hopes for this.
Speaker 2 (21:48):
Going over to the fan duel text line, and we've
got Bowl Hunter and Rock Keel saying one thing many
not mentioning is this will be year two of a
Matt Luke coach O line. Yeah, a lot of people
would love that high when he made it, and he
has had an impact. In my opinion, he's the best
offensive line and the offensive line coach in the country.
And washing them from Mount Holly said, sounds like a
good team. Can't wait for them to walk into Wana
(22:11):
Teeth Valley in October. So final, what are your thoughts
on this Cunton offense? What is what are your expectations?
Speaker 7 (22:18):
Well, first of all, that is a Tariol fan that
said that I went back and looked so he like
I have criticizing the environment.
Speaker 1 (22:25):
Well done, sir, It's true.
Speaker 7 (22:28):
When I see this offense, this is the offense that
scares me the most on the schedule for Carolina, no
doubt about it, and nationally it's got to be up
there as one of the top offenses. Maybe you like
a system like Oregon, maybe you think even with Dante Moore,
they're still going to be really good, So maybe you
have them as a team that might be more explosive.
Speaker 1 (22:50):
But I think this offense is loaded.
Speaker 8 (22:52):
Man.
Speaker 1 (22:53):
I think cade club Nick.
Speaker 7 (22:54):
You know, when you look back at last year, I
just he's not a guy that really jumps off the
page at you at times. But when you look at
his stats, he is a hell of a player and
he has put up some amazing stats. I think I
downplayed how good he really was last year to myself,
at least when I was sort of.
Speaker 1 (23:13):
Doing the preseas.
Speaker 7 (23:16):
Yeah, I mean he's he looked really good last year,
and I think he's going to be poised to lead
this team again. I don't know if he is a
guy that is necessarily dragging a team to the college
football playoff, but he doesn't have to do that. He's
in a system that's set up for him to be successful.
Their offensive line is as good as we've seen in
a long time, so you need to be able to
(23:38):
take advantage of that and the wide receiving court. The
wide receiving corps is the best in the country. It's
not even close you're talking about. You mentioned all the
guys that you mentioned. You also left out Cole Turner.
Remember Cole Turner also a significant receiver for them last year.
At times, they are six deep at the wide receiving corps,
guys that could get drafted into the NFL. So this
(23:59):
is just a loaded group. Running the football is going
to be interesting. I'm wondering how long it takes for
them to really give the reins over to Gideon Davidson
if they give it to him early in the season
like they did with some of the guys on the
defensive side of the ball last year.
Speaker 1 (24:15):
Sammy Brown, you know that was a good example.
Speaker 7 (24:18):
Then maybe maybe this could be the best offense in
all of college football.
Speaker 1 (24:22):
But that running game is the one thing that you question,
and we got to plug it. Clemson fans, tune in
tomorrow at one o'clock.
Speaker 2 (24:28):
We will have Sammy Brown on these airwaves to talk
about this Clemson football team and how ironic he's going
to be on on the day we are going to
dissect the Clemson defense. So it'll be interesting to hear
what he has to say, man, because this is a
guy that could emerge as a Buckets Award finalist this
year with what he was able to do in his
(24:49):
freshman year. So you won't want to miss that again.
One o'clock, we will have Sammy Brown on a body
Works plus Guess hotline. All right, So, moving out of
the Clemson conversations, going back over to the Carolina Panthers,
and so we look at Tetoroa right now, and he's
got a minor injury.
Speaker 1 (25:06):
We feel good that he will be back from that.
Speaker 2 (25:09):
But other than that, so far, when we look at
the rest of this receiving corps, I beg the question,
you know, how fragile is this receiving core and so
what do I mean by that? Not from an injury standpoint,
but just as far as I've said it the entire
offseason that I really love what they have in the room.
Speaker 1 (25:27):
But it's also a roster of hope.
Speaker 2 (25:30):
And this is a group of hope because you don't
know what Tetoroh is going to do as a pro
Excel has yet to prove himself.
Speaker 1 (25:37):
On a high level.
Speaker 2 (25:38):
Jylan Koker, as much as I like him, what can
he do in year two now that he's got a
little bit of expectations. We know what to expect from
Adam Deeling, We know what he's going to bring to
the table, that steady veteran that's going to be there.
But as you like to talk about, sometimes walcome out
father time, maybe he takes a little bit of a
step back this season. And so as good as they
(25:58):
can be, as much potent as they have, has this
preseason brought about new concerns and just how fragile is
this group. Like an injury here or a god not
showing up and being what he should be, and this
group could automatically go back to just being average or
a group that people aren't happy with.
Speaker 3 (26:16):
T mac injury would hurt I think more than anybody else.
If Adam DeLand goes down, this is what you have
Hunter Renfro for. It's him being the possession receiver that
can work close to the line of scrimmage. So I
think you could be okay there. Jalen Coker goes down,
he can be I think T Mac you can just
almost have as a one and a half guy that
can do other things than maybe Coker can't do like
(26:37):
t mat Can for instance. I think the difference between
t Mac and Cocher might be the yards after catch
with what you have in t MAC. I remember the
Cocher long run for a touchdown that he had, but
he was wide open. He put on the burners man
like it was good. That was good straight line speed.
I don't think anybody would look at Coker as this
real quick, shifty, fluid, smooth type of guy. I think
(26:57):
he wins with brute like good route running and I
think he's just kind of a brute physical tank to
deal with, and he's so strong. That's what I think
he can do. But I also think t Mac can
win some of those contested catches and give you a
little bit of the yak, give you some of the
intermediate passing chops attacking that kind of area of the
football field. So if tam Mac goes down, I think
(27:20):
that is the biggest piece of fragility that you have
with this receiving corps. I think if anybody else goes down,
you can depend on others to possibly carry that out.
I would say XL with the kind of manufactured touches
you can design for him. I don't know if anybody
else has that type of skill set, but Xcel needs
to show me he can provide us that kind of
skill set in any kind of consistent basis. So yeah,
(27:43):
I think t Mac is the one that would hurt
you from losing specific things that help you win football
games if he's out. I don't think there's a replacement
that you can put out there on the football yeah, or.
Speaker 2 (27:53):
Even just how they play if they don't show up
as advertised. Because leading into talking about XL, we know
how he came out of the first preseason game after
he got his Rocky Balboa on out there on the field,
but then we don't hear anything from him in the
game versus the Texans. And yes, showing up and making
a nice catch and the joint practice is nice, but
(28:14):
you want to see this happen on the grass. And
so two, I wonder too, where are the manufactured touches
for him? We know that they want to use him
in a Deebo Samuel type of role, and I don't
know that necessarily that fits him. But I mean, we
can't see an orbit sweet with him. We don't see
a wide receiver screen with him like nothing. And then
(28:34):
as far as concern, we talked about some of the
coverage plays that Houston's defense was able to make, either
making Bryce hold the ball longer than he wanted to
or straight up getting a sack, And so we know
that these things are happening because guys aren't open down
the field. Now, the defense obviously can have some gotches
where they call the right coverage, the right blitz, all
of those things. But how worried are we now at
(28:56):
this point that excels preseason has been so quiet on
the field.
Speaker 3 (29:00):
Well, you think about it, right, you go to the
first game, he got in a fight, he was out
of the game immediately. Yes, played one drive, so you
weren't a part of that second drive. It's an issue.
We already had that conversation. But in terms of not
showcasing his ability, it's not like we saw that against Cleveland.
He just wasn't on the field because of a in
my opinion, not so smart decision. Against Houston, he played
(29:23):
with Bryce Young, and Bryce Young had zero passing yards
on two attempts. So against Houston, XL wasn't productive, but
neither was tam Ac neither was Adam Thielen Coker didn't play.
Nobody was productive with Bryce Young in the game. Andy
Dalton goes in and you have the Team AC double
move that he tries to connect. But then Andy Dalton,
(29:43):
that's the only time when a starting receiver would have
been productive at all. Then Jack Plumber enters the game.
No more snaps for Team Act, no more snaps for XL.
So I think when you get kicked out of a
game and then the next game you play, the offense
looks that bad where the protection isn't there. Bryce Young
had zero passing yards. Andy Dalton had twenty two passing
yard To believe both of those. One was to ETN,
(30:06):
one was t Rico Dowdle if I'm not mistaken. So
no receivers, no starting receivers, nat any production against Houston.
It was that bad of an offensive performance. I wouldn't
point to Xcel's lack of productivity in the preseason and
say that's my reason for concern. If I'm concerned about XCEL,
I'm pointing to what he did last season and saying
that's the reason I'm concerned.
Speaker 1 (30:24):
All right, So we're gonna put a pin in it.
Speaker 2 (30:26):
Right here, because I have some more questions that we're
going to talk about with this receiving corps on the
side on the other side, so this is a great conversation.
Let us know how do you feel about the receiving
corps after a couple of preseason games. And when we

We appreciate you for joining us. Keep the FanDuel text

made plays at the wide receiver position, where we're gonna
talk a little bit more about that. Let's get back
(35:47):
into the wide receiver convo from this preseason.
Speaker 1 (35:50):
And so I talked a lot about Jimmy Horn Jr.
And it happens every single year.
Speaker 2 (35:54):
And I'm not saying that we can file him into
this category, but what I am saying is that there's
always receiver. It feels like it comes out and they
showed their speed, They look good on tape. They show
him in practice winning these one on one routes where
they have two way goals and they do sixty four
moves before they get open, something they could never do
in the game. He for just go ham talking about him.
(36:16):
And so for Jimmy Horn Jr. For all the promise
that he's shown in practice in other areas, we haven't
seen much from him.
Speaker 4 (36:23):
Now.
Speaker 2 (36:23):
He had an almost in the first game where he
had like a deep cross where the ball went out
of bounds, touch the plumber and miss them. He wasn't
able to snack that. But what do we think about
him so far? Are we still as high on Jimmy
Horn Jr. As we were when he got him rookie
Minnie Camp where his legs look like signing the Hedgehog?
Or do we feel like that he could be that
(36:46):
Camp all star that people like to talk about that
you never hear from him again.
Speaker 1 (36:51):
Ye, he could be both.
Speaker 3 (36:53):
I always, even with my love for wide receivers, I
do always come in with just the tiny grain of
salt to the preseason production because you're right, we see
it from the wide receiver spot all the time. There
are projections out there that he's going to make the
team from all the people in the know and that
they just might keep seven wide receivers, which I know
was a big talking point with Kyle Bailey a couple
(37:15):
of days ago or maybe last week sometime. So I
think he's still gonna make the team in terms of
how productive he's going to be. It was always going
to be an uphill battle with all the other guys
that you're competing against for all those targets. The thing
about preseason Wes, you just brought up a play where
Jimmy Horn wins his rep Jimmy Horn in that game
against Cleveland, can't do anything else. He beats his guy
(37:38):
off the line of scrimmage, he's opened downfield. All he's
got to do is be delivered a nice enough ball.
Jack Plummer just saying't going to be able to do it.
And we know Jack Plummer now is somebody that I
think is going to get cut. If Bryce Perkins shows
any competency ufail bound, baby, you know what I'm saying,
Jack Plummer might be gone. Jack did not look good
against Houston either. So receiver was productive against the Texans.
(38:02):
It was the running backs catching some passes. Jack Plumber
heard him. The production hurt him. Jimmy Horn, they were
using him in that first game really close to the
line of scrimmage, trying to throw him some screen passes
and see if he could wiggle free for maybe a
long run. Just didn't happen. So again, I think the
passing game has just been so bad all around Wes
(38:22):
that we can't tell you anything about these wide receivers
from what we've seen the first two contests.
Speaker 2 (38:27):
And so I would put Hunter Renfro in that same category.
This is another guy we see clip out the clip
of him in practice, and I've been a supporter of
his a little bit of acc love what he did
at Clemson and all of that good stuff. But this
is another guy too that's been on the quiet side
when they get out on the grass and under the lights.
And so do we feel like at this point, I
(38:47):
guess from what I've gathered from you that the quarterbacks
and the way that this offensive line has played sometimes
has affected these wide.
Speaker 3 (38:55):
Out well, yeah, all the way through. In fact, while
we're trying to figure out what take I have for preseason,
because I just can't get worked up to the point
where I think it's going to be this huge indictment
on what we're about to witness in twenty twenty five,
the real thing that I'm understanding, what I'm most frustrated with,
is how bad the passing game has been. You probably
(39:16):
don't get valuable reps in learning more about your wide
receivers at the back end of that room because Hunter
Renfro didn't play the first game, so we have to
get that out of the way. The only game that
he played was against Houston, where I thought he was fine.
But who produced Bryson Tremaine has made some plays. He
made plays in joint practice. That's actually an interesting name
(39:37):
to monitor. He's not going to make the team, but
I do think he's going to make the practice squad.
But other than that, the starters aren't playing. They're playing
ten percent of the snaps and ten total, ten percent
of the snaps whatever. And then we have to go
to what TJ Luther, Bryce and Tremaine.
Speaker 2 (39:54):
Flash a lot in the game that he played well,
flashed a few times.
Speaker 3 (39:57):
Would say against the Browns, yes, y, yeah, and then
had the catch that didn't count. But that I guess
that's the point. All we have to really work off
of is the drive where the starters played the second
touchdown drive against the Browns.
Speaker 1 (40:11):
I would say it's you're right.
Speaker 3 (40:13):
Coker had the touchdown on that drive and then had
the catch that didn't count. Other than that, just nobody else,
nobody else can really be productive. Tamac One on a
double move, quarterback misses him because his elbow gets hit.
Jimmy Horn won, Jack Plumber misses him. That's what's been
frustrating about it.
Speaker 2 (40:31):
Yeah, Lee from barn says, Jimmy Junior screwed if he
has to do it on Thursday, night, who is going
to throw him the ball? And path and Cliff says,
as Minny says, Cedar Street all stars baby, all right,
so there we have a good touch.
Speaker 7 (40:44):
Go sleep on Bryce Perkins. Man, this dude, I think
he's better. He'll be better than Zack Palmer, right because
Jack Plumber. I told you all this last year, man,
Jack Plumber, ain't it man?
Speaker 1 (40:56):
I'm sorry, it's I hope.
Speaker 8 (40:59):
So.
Speaker 1 (40:59):
I mean I did watch him a good bit in
the UFA.
Speaker 2 (41:01):
I just wonder if kind of his game, the style
that he plays is fit for the NFL. Is he
good enough to be a backup? I'm not sure we're
gonna see. I mean, he was the MVP of the
UFL last year. How much has he learned? How much
has he gotten better during that time? Because we know
he was on some NFL rosters before. I think he
(41:22):
played with the Ravens. Yes, the Rams started a game
and it wasn't good.
Speaker 5 (41:28):
No.
Speaker 3 (41:28):
I love Bryce Perkins from a hey do you remember
that acc player standpoint? I don't love him having to
start a game for me, But I don't even know
if he needs to be a good backup this year.
Is Bryce Perkins good enough to be a third string
quarterback in the league.
Speaker 1 (41:43):
I think.
Speaker 3 (41:43):
So I didn't watch nearly as much UFL tape as
you did. Apparently you said you watched him a couple
of times. If you watched one second of UFL, you'll
probably watch more than I did. But with Bryce Perkins,
knowing a little bit of what I know about him,
I think he's probably good enough to be a third
string quarterback. And I would bet that he's better than
what Jack Plumber has shown us each of the last
couple of years, where he just hasn't been very good.
Speaker 1 (42:04):
Yeah. I just hope we don't ever have to see
him play a real meaningful game.
Speaker 7 (42:07):
Yeah, because on Thursday, you're just looking for him to
give you something to evaluate the receivers on, right, Just
give me a shot to evaluate this group, And I
think he can do that.
Speaker 1 (42:17):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (42:18):
And so now when we look at Ted Roa, I
guess just checking in on him and doesn't necessarily have
to be you know, production where we're looking at and say, hey,
you know you had a test down he did this,
He had that, But just the eyeball test with him,
does he have the look of that number one alpha
dog wide receiver?
Speaker 1 (42:35):
To you I think so. I think he's got the look.
Speaker 7 (42:38):
For me.
Speaker 3 (42:38):
What I like is that he is not having an
issue getting open. That has not been an issue for
him the last couple of games against the Browns. Got
to haul it in. There's the one outright drop because
you didn't get your head around you and I mentioned it.
It's football. The first ever game that he's playing in
his NFL career. Second one, people call it a hospital ball,
(43:00):
little high still recorded as a drop. Okay, got to
bring it in whatever second game beats Derek Stingley. I
believe on that double move where he's starting to go
up the sideline, he's open, Andy Dalton gets his elbow hit.
Dave Canallis mentions it after the game, missed a touchdown
because pressure got to us. It was a double move.
Has to hold on to the football, just not enough time.
(43:22):
The one thing I still don't know about is how
he's going to react to press coverage, because we're not
seeing a lot of that against him in preseason West
and so until we see that, I think, I think
that's the way you take TMAC out of a play,
out of a quarter, hopefully not out of a game,
or even really a quarter a half to be honest
with you, But it's the press coverage that was the
issue in joint practices or really even more so in
(43:46):
just normal practices during training camp. Didn't see that in
the preseason. What's good is that if you ain't gonna
press him, I feel pretty goodbout him getting open. I
like what he can do there. Just football's physical game,
and we haven't seen a lot of physicality at the
line of image yet.
Speaker 1 (44:00):
Yeah, I'm with you.
Speaker 2 (44:01):
I would say I probably would roll with the incomplete
for him as of right now because we haven't seen enough.
But as far as what we have seen, he doesn't
appear to be the most physical receiver right now. But
that's also because, as we said, I don't know that
there's many situations that he's been put in where he
has to be physical. The body type is still a
(44:24):
little slight as well, but we know there have been
receivers that have gotten away with that type of body type.
But he's still a little slight to me. He could
probably use a little bit more beef, you know, to
be that top flight guy. But those are the only
things that I could say right now, because you know,
he did have the nice catch. Against Cleveland, he did
shake free to get up and for what would have
(44:46):
been a touchdown. And as you said, against Houston, you
know they were able to have perhaps a busted coverage
that they were able to get and beat on that
double move to be able to get it.
Speaker 1 (44:55):
So we'll see.
Speaker 2 (44:57):
But right now, like you said, without it being as
physic as it will be in these games, he has
shown that he can at least hang in an NFL
in terms of getting open.
Speaker 3 (45:06):
I think the two questions about him coming out of
college and just the ability as a football player. We
know about the practice habit questions, but he wasn't a
very physical wide receiver. To be that tall and that long,
that's not usual. Those types of bodies are more physical
than what he is, So could he handle that. That's
where it's big time incomplete. All of this is incomplete,
(45:28):
but just for the sake of having this conversation. The
other question was the separation. There were some questions about
that and whether he was good enough at that. I
think he's been pretty damn fluid man. I think he
has gotten open even if they're playing off of them
at the line of scrimmage.
Speaker 1 (45:46):
It's just all about.
Speaker 3 (45:47):
How are you going to be able to take those
hands being on you close to the football that it's
a big deal. Coaches worth their salt are going to
test him that way, being that slight, having guys that
can get leverage, get their hands up on to your pads,
jam you four. However long that throws timing all sorts
of off and so if that happens, you might not
get the ball, and might it might lead to an
(46:11):
incomplete pass. But I think we're answering maybe some of
the can't he get open separation stuff? We just got
to answer the physicality stuff, all right, folks.
