Speaker 1 (00:08):
One more hour to goo on Weston Walker. We're broadcasting
live from the Chandler Vault to studios CV Injury Law
dot Com, CV Injury Law dot Com.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
One call.
Speaker 1 (00:18):
That's all the Carolina's personal injury lawyers. Speaking of injuries,
the Hornets, they're suffering a couple of more injuries. Yes,
Brandon Miller does not look like he is going to
play in this game with the Hornet's latest injury report
Brandon Miller being listed as out, continuing to battle that
shoulder sublexation, and we've seen him missed a couple of
(00:41):
games already. That's what's so frustrating is the fact that
he came in the second game of the year, he
suffers that shoulder sublexation. But the injury report released yesterday
by Hornets pr he's out. We have Trey Man out
with ankle impingement because we can't dodge the impingements anywhere.
Josh Green he's still out, so is Pat Connaton, as
(01:05):
well as Grant Williams with that knee surgery. So Josh
Green and Grant Williams they're out. But what's interesting about
those guys, Josh Green was practicing with Greensboro, so it
looks like he's going to be coming back soon. And
Grant Williams, he was seen on social media practicing with
the team even if he hasn't been designated to return
with Greensboro or Charlotte. So hopefully some good news on
(01:26):
the horizon for a guy like Grant. But no Brandon Miller,
and I just don't know what to do with the
Brandon Miller stuff. LaMelo Ball is probable. He has left
wrist soreness. He's on the injury report with left wrist soreness.
Now you might think, great, that same risk has given
him the issues again. No, it's actually a different risk.
(01:47):
The risk that he suffered a fracture in his rookie
year that was his right wrist, and we've seen him
grab at that pretty much really as his career has
gone on. This is a different rist injury. Don't know
if the injury is going to hold him out, don't
know how severe it is. I will tell you when
the Hornets pr twitter account puts out probable, I do
not trust them because I have seen too many times
(02:09):
when I see a player listed as probable, oftentimes those
guys are out closer to game time. I'm just I
felt like this was a regime that didn't do that
nearly as much. But we've already seen it. I know
at least once this year. It might have been twice
that we've seen it. A guy that was probable who
eventually is out. So even if it doesn't outright list, hey,
(02:31):
he's going to play. It makes you lean that way
that he's going to suit up. But nah, man, you
can't trust whatever the designations are for these guys. And
here we are with more injuries against the next team, Flounder.
You know how highly I think of your squad. I
think you guys than I do. No, I honest with you. No,
I think they're fantastic and they've been climbing the standings.
(02:52):
They did just lose to the Celtics. Jalen Brown was
excellent in this game against the Knicks for yeah in
the evening. Yeah, great job from him. I still think
you guys can turn it up defensively, and I think
you guys move the ball really well. Jalen Brunson can
take over whenever he wants to. You have enough depth
in the front court. In my opinion, I love what
(03:12):
you guys can do. So because I think the Knicks
are my favorite to reach the NBA Finals out of
the East this year. I will pick them over every
other team in the East. It's gonna be tough to
get a win on the road without Brandon Miller and
possibly without LaMelo.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
Ball Well, and you're facing a team that is the
best I believe in the league at home. They are
tremendous in Madison Square Garden so far this year. So
that's one of the big things going into this game
that you kind of wonder about. Now, you do get
them on the second night of a back to back,
So does that give you some sort of advantage. We've
(03:48):
seen the Knicks. They're a team that at times does
play with their food a little bit. Allows a team
to stick around. Maybe that's what allows the Hornets to
be successful in this game. But yeah, I mean, this
is going to be a tough one, man, I mean,
this is but this is what you've got in front
of you, Like, this is one where you've got to
take advantage of them potentially being tired. Now, they're not
(04:10):
gonna be as tired as they would have been last
year because with Mike Brown, they do rotate a little
bit more.
Speaker 4 (04:16):
Tom Thibodeau. They didn't rotate at all.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
Oh for sure.
Speaker 4 (04:18):
Yeah, I mean absolutely no rotation.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
It was dude, we're going to play these guys for
forty five minutes out of the forty eight and we're
gonna make sure that, you know, they're ready to go
for the postseason. So I do think that's that's gonna
be an advantage from years past for the Knicks. Yeah,
but yeah's a tough one. Tough one for the Hornets.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
You know, there's a lot of rumors swirling about in
Hornet's Land. Hornets read it a great aggregation account. They
just do a great job of organizing everything for US
Hornets fans out there. They put out some of the
comments from front office execs about what you can expect
from the Hornets and the NBA regarding some guys on
(05:00):
the move. For instance, ESPN had a Western Conference GM
comment that there's rampant speculation among rival teams at LaMelo,
John Morant, and Trey Young could all be available leading
up to the February fifth trade deadline. A West GM
says I wouldn't want any of them. An East executive
said they all might have negative trade value at this point.
(05:22):
We had some Miles Bridges stuff kind of floating about.
I don't even know how real that is. The reporting
on it, to me is very fortune cookie. It's very vague.
In fifteen years you might experience good or bad luck.
Oh well, you got it right. Oh that's amazing. It's
that kind of reporting. I'll leave it up to the
guys that I truly trust that don't miss. So I
(05:43):
don't know what's happening with Miles. I will say we
have had a contract structured for Miles that lends itself
to being highly tradable in a descending value contract. And
we've seen this stuff a million times now from legitimate
reporting about Phoenix being interested in Miles, the Clippers possibly
being interested in Miles, both the free agency and on
(06:03):
the trade market. So it's just the same thing again.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
Man.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
This is the year though, where it feels like they
might just pull the trigger on some of these trades.
I don't think the Hornets are in business of taking
back pennies on the dollar. I think it's going to
be tough to move Lamello for what he might call
for out there on the open market. And what you're
seeking to me, Miles Bridges is the much more likely
candidate to be on the move once you get to
(06:28):
the February fifth trade deadline, who's most likely to be
off of the Hornet's roster. To me, it makes way
more sense that it would be Miles because I think
you can get closer value on what he is than
what you think LaMelo is and what other executives might
be willing to send in return. And it might be
frustrated him because of the injuries. But again, if Flamello
(06:49):
comes out and he gives you an efficient, impressive line
with decent enough volume, then maybe you just want to
sell high on that. But it's tough to trade him
with the line that looks like you're shooting under forty percent.
You're shooting under thirty percent from three. The turnovers aren't
even all that bad. It's just you're not making shots
(07:12):
and you're missing games, and you're showing up on the
injury report again because of a different risk injury. At
this point, what GM out there in the NBA would say, yeah, man,
we need to go all in for that guy, and
it's going to take a close to all in type
of price for the Hornets to be willing to deal him.
You don't want to take back negative value. I don't
even if you're just frustrated by all of it. I
(07:34):
get it, but I don't want to take negative value
back for him because they are better with him on
the floor. On this one hurts founder because I look
at what Matt Alkisa writes a part of Sports Illustrated,
and he gives us the numbers on con LaMelo and
Brandon all being on the floor at the same time.
(07:54):
They've been on the floor at the same time for
one hundred and sixty nine possessions.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
This season.
Speaker 1 (08:00):
They score one hundred and thirty one points per one
hundred possessions. That's in the ninety ninth percentile in basketball.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
Pretty bad.
Speaker 1 (08:09):
Yeah, in fact, it's quite good, elite, some might say.
But we've only seen it for one hundred and sixty
nine possessions. And I quote tweeted what Matt Alkisa wrote
and said, guys, I promise you, this is the time
I'm going to catch my tail. After all, it's right here,
it's within grabbing distance, it's in front of me. This
(08:32):
is the time we're going to catch it. Except man,
like all we do is we keep waiting for these
guys to be on the floor at the same time
for an extended period of time, because then you have
this small sample of all right, well, it's only five games,
it's only six games. And that's the frustrating part of
being the Hornets fan. That that right there, that stat
that Matt Alkisa puts on Twitter, the fact that you're
(08:55):
in the ninety ninth percentile with your three best players
Brandon Miller, LaMelo Ball Coon k Nipple.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
Those are your three best players.
Speaker 1 (09:02):
They are what are supposed to be your three best players,
and offensively, the numbers suggest that you can't be stopped.
But we can't get that trio to play at the
same time long enough, and so this is us constantly
chasing our tail, and then when we catch it, I
don't even know what catching it looks like, because when
you catch your tail, you don't earn any kind of award, Like,
(09:24):
are we just going to continue to raise the banner
for having the best offense five percent of the time.
That doesn't win you ball games? And that's what you
want to reach at some point, and we just haven't won.
Speaker 2 (09:37):
Enough ball games around here.
Speaker 1 (09:40):
I'm really hoping that all three of these players can
share the floor with one another for an extended period
of time, but it won't be tonight flown because Brandon
Miller's not out there.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
And the thing is is, at some point, you gotta
stop holding your breath, man, because if you keep holding
your breath, you're gonna pass out. Like we have been
holding our breath for three years now, and it doesn't
matter no matter how long we do it.
Speaker 4 (10:05):
They do not get on the floor.
Speaker 3 (10:06):
We see these stats every single year that, oh, when
they're on the floor together, they're elite, okay, but they're
never on the floor together.
Speaker 4 (10:14):
So eventually you're gonna have to move off of someone
in this court.
Speaker 3 (10:17):
And as you said, Wayla LaMelo is playing right now,
I mean, are they gonna look at him as a
better player than Trey Young now?
Speaker 4 (10:24):
John Morants, that's a whole different story.
Speaker 3 (10:26):
Job's got the off the court stuff, the as you
guys like to call it, blicky situation. You know, when
it comes when it comes to that, I mean, yeah,
teams might say, you know what, I'm not necessarily willing
to take that on. But with LaMelo, I mean, you've
you've got to show them that you can still play
at that all star level for them to be able
(10:47):
to take you on, like a team like the Clippers
or something like that. Maybe that's you know, that was
a team that we heard him rumor to. They're very
familiar with managing players that simply don't play. But the
thing is is that when you are on the court
for them, they want you to be efficient. So that's
what you have to get to if you're LaMelo. So
I mean, yeah, I hate that where we're at with this,
(11:10):
that you have to you get into that mindset where
you have to eventually blow it up.
Speaker 1 (11:14):
But it's the same thing, I don't know, the same
thing again. Yeah, I mean we're twenty games through the
season and LaMelo's played half of them, and the games
that he has played, he's not been efficient. He's not
playing like an All Star we talked about him. He'll
get a bunch of fan votes this time. It will
be justifiable if the media slash coaches don't vote him
in the top whatever it is in order for you
(11:36):
to play an All Star game. It's the live Wire.
Coming up next on Wes and Walker. Yeah back on
wesn Walker Sports Radio ninety two to seven WFNZ, discussing
the LaMelo situation. More comments come out like I just
(11:59):
it feels like there's more rumors. Tim McMahon, Bobby Marks
putting stuff out about what they've heard from Western Conference executives,
Eastern Conference executives. All the executives are talking about LaMelo,
John Morant, all of the point guards that could be
playing somewhere else. Chris Paul gonna be playing somewhere else too.
I mean, it's point guard musical chairs in the NBA.
(12:20):
At this point, the Clippers decided to move off of
Chris Paul, a franchise legend that was a part of
some of the greatest moments in franchise history. Even if
it's a low bar over there for the Clippers and
Chris Paul after going back home quote unquote this is
his real home, I would say, but going back to
his Clippers home expecting to compete for a playoff spot.
(12:41):
That team has gotten off to an awful start and
it doesn't look to be stopping anytime soon. Clippers just decided,
all good, We'll just go ahead and sever some ties here.
Chris Paul out there on the open market to play
what was supposed to be a farewell tour with the Clippers.
Any interest if you were a Hornets fan, do you
want to go after the veteran PG and say, you know,
(13:03):
maybe you can help some of our young guys around here.
After all, we are, if not the youngest team in
the league, one of the youngest teams.
Speaker 4 (13:09):
Man, what do you got to lose?
Speaker 3 (13:10):
I mean, I think he's probably still got a decent mindset.
You would hope that he would be able to come
in here and help some of those young guys grow
up a little bit, and it takes the pressure off
of a guy like LaMelo to necessarily be great every
single night that he's on the floor. I think it
would be worth a worthwhile move if I was the
(13:31):
Hornets to at least look into it.
Speaker 4 (13:33):
Right now.
Speaker 3 (13:34):
I don't know how money lines up and everything. Trust me,
when it comes to the NBA salary structure and everything,
I could not.
Speaker 4 (13:41):
It is your.
Speaker 1 (13:42):
Confusing bird rights. But second Apron, if it works, why not.
Speaker 3 (13:48):
Maybe he could be similar, Probably wouldn't play as much, right,
but similar to what Tony Parker was when he was here.
Speaker 1 (13:56):
I would say, very different in the terms of their personality.
But I hear what you're saying, No, just personality, completely different. Yeah,
Schaum's tweeted this out. Chris Paul, in his leadership style,
clashed with the Clippers, sources TELEESPN. Paul has been vocal
in holding management, coaches and players accountable, which the team
felt became disruptive. Specifically, Tyloo was not on speaking terms
(14:19):
with Paul for several weeks. That's who Chris Paul is.
I love that he's going out exactly like who he is.
I love seeing this report. You might be frustrated with
the Clippers, and that would be understandable, but I love
Chris Paul being a tyrant and playing his last year
in the league like a tyrant.
Speaker 2 (14:40):
Do you want a tyrant here?
Speaker 1 (14:41):
It's one of the things whereas I don't want to
mess with the camaraderie or the personality in the locker room. Hey, man,
if you want to try to set a culture of accountability,
Chris Paul is going to make sure you're accountable.
Speaker 2 (14:52):
And I do wonder this locker.
Speaker 4 (14:54):
Room kind of needs that, to be honest with you.
Speaker 2 (14:56):
And who couldn't use a little more of it? Right?
Speaker 1 (15:01):
I Can you imagine, dude, Like, seriously, can you imagine
LaMelo and Chris Paul of the same team, Because for me,
I've always thought LaMelo Ball was misunderstood to a great degree.
People think he doesn't care about basketball, he's lazy, YadA
YadA whatever.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
I don't think any of that is true.
Speaker 1 (15:18):
My biggest issue with Lamello has been off of the court,
running red lights out of the stadium. That's been my
biggest issue, all right, because that really could hurt some people,
being a speed demon in the Lamborghini and all of it.
But also it's just kind of a sign of being
young and rich. And I'm not going to make too
much out of it as it pertains to his character.
He's being young whatever, Lamello, he is somebody that likes
(15:44):
to play his style of basketball.
Speaker 2 (15:45):
I will say that.
Speaker 1 (15:46):
And if Chris Paul comes in and says, oh no, sir,
we ain't doing that anymore. I would love to see
what those two guys would do on the same team
with one another.
Speaker 3 (15:56):
Yet, we know Lamello's personality because we've been out to
some of these media days and everything like that. How
do you think that Chris Paul is going to react
when he's wanting to joke around while the team is
six and fifteen. He just wanted to have a fun
day by practice, and Chris Paul is like, dude, we
(16:17):
need this to be no nonsense. It would be a
clash of styles, but I think it would be welcomed
to a certain extent by Charles Lee, because Yeah, in
terms of holding guys accountable, I think the guy that
really does the best job of that is Grant Williams.
Grant Williams hasn't been on the court, so I think
you wonder if his voice has kind of been silenced
(16:38):
maybe a little by the fact that he hasn't necessarily
been out there. So maybe if you get him back,
you get Chris Paul back, maybe that would allow you
to be a little bit more consistent of a team
when you get if you have some of those veteran
leaders in the locker room.
Speaker 1 (16:52):
Well, and the last couple things before we get to
the live wire, some Pean Nuts writes in Chris Paul
worked for Oka, see needed to work here with the
Hornets as well. You know, Sga and Chris Paul are
like the best of friends, because Chris Paul is cool
with you if you care about basketball as much as
he does.
Speaker 3 (17:10):
And we know that's the one thing. That's the one
thing that I think SGA cares about. I don't know
if there's much else that he cares about. I think
basketball is one of them. He cares about fashion. He
does do that.
Speaker 1 (17:22):
He doesn't true, he never wears an outfit more than once,
but he's wearing that fashion and being noticed on his
way to the court and on his way home from
the court to go spend time with his family. That's
who SGA is. But Chris Paul gets down with that
kind of thing.
Speaker 2 (17:37):
Man.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
That's why those guys are still so close, and they FaceTime.
If you watch the Starting five documentary on Twitter or
on Netflix, excuse me about Chris Paul calling SGA. But
also is Tyree's Haliburton, James Harden some of the stars
that Netflix followed. You saw the relationship between those two,
and maybe you could develop something like that between Chris
(18:00):
and whoever. But the guy I have in mind is
con and I do think that you would have a
nice relationship between those two. When con K Nipple after
the other after the loss against Brooklyn was quoted by
Rod Boona saying quote, I can live with losing games
winning games, but you're playing a certain style. The style
we want to play and to come out and not
play how we play and score one hundred points. That's unacceptable.
(18:23):
We're six and fifteen. We're not good enough. We've got
to be who we are. We get we have to
play hard, we've got to compete to win every game
we can in this league, and we didn't do that tonight.
That's truly disappointing.
Speaker 2 (18:34):
Man. That's through his first twenty games. Don't you love that?
Speaker 4 (18:37):
I do.
Speaker 3 (18:37):
I mean, that's that's what you're looking for. And this
is where for a guy like him, it's just natural.
You're wondering, can you bring that out in Lamel? And
we've been saying that for years, but I mean, for
Con that's just I mean, this is as a rookie,
he is saying, I know we didn't play our best basketball.
We need to demand more out of this. So I mean,
(19:00):
that's that's what you'll love to see, man. And I think, yeah,
him and Chris Paul would get together very well. And
I think some of the other guys on this roster
would get together very well.
Speaker 5 (19:10):
You know.
Speaker 3 (19:10):
I I think LaMelo he he'd probably be fine because
I think Chris Paul would realize after a while, now
this is this guy, this guy cares it's a different
way of showing he likes to goof off a little bit,
but uh, I think that would eventually show up. So
I mean that's I'm just looking for a little bit
of leadership because this is still a fairly young group
(19:31):
that they have here.
Speaker 1 (19:32):
Yeah, it really is. All right, you're ready for some
sound here? Oh yeah, go through the sound bites. We
got a bunch of them. Sound with flound a sound
with flound time down for the live wires in the.
Speaker 4 (19:46):
West, the West, all right. And we had a great
guest today.
Speaker 3 (19:53):
He had Shannon Spake, who is in make sure you
go back and check that out if you guys didn't
hear that. But also we had a great guest yesterday
in this time slot. Chris Rose was on with us
and he was talking about the biggest surprise in the NFL,
and he says, it's the Carolina Panthers.
Speaker 6 (20:09):
If you had told me at the beginning of the
year that the Panthers would have seven wins, I would
have said, okay, did they play thirty five games? Because
I didn't think there was any way that this team
was going to be where it is right now. With
a little bit more than a month ago in the season.
I actually believe they're the biggest surprise in the NFL.
(20:30):
And I'm not saying that because I'm on your show.
I honestly believe it. The Panthers, particularly along along the
front line on both sides of football. I didn't think
they'd have enough to compete, and somehow they've hung in
here and here we are. They've got two games against
the team trailing by a half game in the standings,
and they're going to have a shot at this thing.
(20:51):
I cannot believe this is where they are. But good
for Dave Canalis and everybody else in that organization that
this is where they are.
Speaker 3 (20:58):
All right, So you've watched which the rest of the
league too. Who do you think is the biggest surprise
this year? Is it the Carolina Panthers or is it
a team like the Bears, the Colts, any of those seams?
Speaker 2 (21:11):
Haven't hit it? Haven't hit it.
Speaker 4 (21:13):
No, it's New England, New England. Okay, I'm England makes
a lot of sense too.
Speaker 1 (21:17):
I didn't expect them to be this good. You know
how much I love Drake May, I didn't expect them
to be an MVP. He might just win the MVP Award.
I thought he might have a Jayden Daniels esque year
in his second season, where Jayden had it his first.
Speaker 2 (21:30):
Same thing with CJ. Stroud.
Speaker 1 (21:31):
I thought Drake May would lead New England to the
playoffs and maybe perform well. So I guess there's not
a monster difference between the two. But New England only
has two losses on the year. They lost to the
Raiders at the beginning of the season. What a surprise
that is.
Speaker 4 (21:47):
Oh yeah, that's a bad looks like a bad loss.
Speaker 2 (21:50):
And it is.
Speaker 1 (21:50):
There's no doubt. They also lost to the Steelers. Outside
of that, haven't loss of game. They've ripped off ten
in a row. Now, their schedule isn't the most difficult,
but still it's not so the games that you would
actually give them a lot of credit for. I would say,
beating the Buccaneers, it's impressive. Beating Buffalo on the road,
that's impressive. Their dominant win over Carolina, maybe we just
(22:14):
give them some credit for that. I got that one yet.
So those are a few wins three right there that
suggest yeah, New England they are this good. They are
not fraudulent. And oh, by the way, a game that
we thought that the Giants might make close this past
time out, Patriots just destroyed them right out.
Speaker 3 (22:30):
Of the game.
Speaker 4 (22:30):
It's seventeen nothing after the first quarter.
Speaker 1 (22:32):
So I think New England, with the way that they've
performed at this high of a level, I did not
expect them to be eleven and two. I think that's
more surprising than where Carolina is right now, even if
it is still surprising to see the Panthers still in
the hut.
Speaker 3 (22:45):
Yeah, because the thing that's like, it's not crazy that
the Panthers are where they're at. We thought that they
could go eight to nine, you know, when we went
through the schedule, that was kind of our thinking. We said, Okay,
eight to nine is about where we think they're going
to round out at. And I think that that they
could finish in that area now. I mean, yeah, so
(23:07):
if they're nine and eight, do we around here really
think that they are the biggest surprise. I think, to
be honest with you, some Panther fans they might take
it as an insult that they're the biggest surprise, because hey,
you should have seen us trending in the right direction.
Speaker 4 (23:21):
Whatever.
Speaker 3 (23:22):
To me, it's the Bears, man, because I just did not,
and especially because.
Speaker 4 (23:27):
Is Caleb Williams playing MVP like football.
Speaker 2 (23:31):
I think that's probably too far. But he's playing well.
Speaker 3 (23:33):
Right, he's playing well, but he's not doing what Drake
May is doing and that team's so I mean, yeah,
they have some pieces that they picked up on the
defensive side of the ball. Some of those guys have
been there for years and you didn't see this coming
from them, So that would probably be my biggest surprise.
But I look the Panthers nationally, I can see why
(23:55):
they can make an argument for them because I do
think that nationally a lot of people looked at this
team and thought probably five six wins.
Speaker 1 (24:04):
Well, and surprises don't always have to be positive. Let's
look at Kansas City and Baltimore. That's a good point too,
So maybe those are the two biggest surprises I did
not expect. Once Kansas City got all of their guys back,
which they're pretty healthy generally speaking, they get Rashid Rice
back from the suspension, Isaiah Worthy is playing for them,
I did not expect them to be where they are
(24:25):
right now with a worse record than what the Panthers
have right now. That's unexpected. Baltimore. Lamar Jackson does not
looked good coming back from his injury.
Speaker 2 (24:34):
He is not.
Speaker 4 (24:34):
My fantasy team is suffering because of it.
Speaker 2 (24:37):
So you're going to release them sometime soon?
Speaker 4 (24:38):
Then?
Speaker 2 (24:39):
No, Well I have.
Speaker 3 (24:40):
Justin I have Justin Herbert as my starter, so just
in case, I mean, there will be a point where, yeah,
maybe I would end up releasing Lamar anybody want. Here's
the thing, does anybody really want him in the league
that I suck in?
Speaker 4 (24:52):
Probably not?
Speaker 1 (24:52):
Yeah, I mean I guess just generally speaking with your players,
they probably don't. If you're not going to make the playoffs.
Those are some of the biggest surprises. What else you got?
Speaker 3 (24:59):
All right, let's move on to a shot from last night?
Which one will it be? It was a game winner
from one of the two local teams. Let's take a listen.
Speaker 5 (25:10):
I mean Carolina's struder, didn't they lose the last three times?
Speaker 2 (25:14):
Sick with nobody rote and over all?
Speaker 6 (25:20):
Right?
Speaker 3 (25:20):
Well, Dicky V gets cut off there, but he was
emphatic that no one rotated over to help out there.
Speaker 4 (25:26):
Uh. Which win last night.
Speaker 3 (25:29):
Do you think made more of a statement Duke's win
over Florida or Carolina's win over Kentucky.
Speaker 1 (25:36):
Yeah, I just expect Duke to win. I know Blue
Devils fans kind of get mad at me because they
feel like I'm going back in my tar heels homerism
ways from my elementary and middle school too. With you
are so welcome to I know, I know you'll put
you on the podcast. Yeah, well, I appreciate that. I
will just say I just Duke is going to be
interesting in the sense that they're always going to compete.
(25:59):
But North Carolina has been a much more interesting college
basketball program to me over the last five years because
of the inconsistencies, because of the roller coaster that we've
been on with Hubert Davis. I just expect Duke to
be a top ten team every single year, top five
team every single year. That's what Duke is now. Like,
(26:19):
I do find them to be very good. If they
would have lost last night at home, I'm just really
not worried about him. I'm just not They've earned the
benefit of the doubt. I can't tell you the same
thing is true for North Carolina. So who had a
bigger statement with their victory? I think it's North Carolina.
The fact that they had a freshman do what he
did in closing time, a guy that wasn't supposed to
be the starting point guard with Kayen Evans on the roster,
(26:41):
who now looks like it's pretty universally accepted by Heels
fans that he should be the starting point guard after
the way that he closed out the game. Caleb Wilson
had a bad shooting night, and they still ended up
beating a team on the road ranked in the top
twenty five. And that team is Kentucky, a blue blood
type of program. So I think the bigger win was
(27:02):
for North Carolina simply because they haven't had a whole
lot of those wins in the last few seasons Duke has.
So it's no disrespect to Duke. In fact, it's all
of the respect to Duke. I just expect them, expect
this from them North Carolina.
Speaker 2 (27:16):
I don't.
Speaker 1 (27:17):
I'm not sure what to expect from them. I love
this team. I think they're really talented. I don't think
they've played near their best level of basketball. But because
of all of that, flounder, I think that's the more
interesting win from last night.
Speaker 3 (27:29):
Yeah, I think so too. I think that certainly is
more interesting win. Yeah, there's no doubt because I think
for Carolina, you were still questioning what exactly they are
to go on the road and pick up that victory.
I think that's the big part about it is that
the game for Duke was at home. You were up fifteen,
and you let them back into the game. Not saying
(27:50):
it's a bad win or anything like that. It's a
great shot at the end and it's a great way
to pull one out in a game that became pretty
tough for you because Boogie Flan just to turn it on.
But I think Carolina's win means just a little bit
more because now I don't know if it necessarily says
that they are a team that's going to compete to
(28:11):
win the ACC. I still feel like they're a tier
below Duke and Louisville. But I think it really does
say that this is gonna be a team that's probably
safely gonna make the tournament. We're not gonna be necessarily
having to have the conversations about Hubert Davis, and if
they clean certain things up about their game, then we
are going to be talking about a team that couldn't
(28:33):
make a run in March. They've got the superstar player
to be able to do it last night wasn't his
best performance. Still put up a double double, even though
he struggled a little bit. But if Derek Dixon can
really take off at the point guard spot, that's gonna
be huge for them.
Speaker 4 (28:49):
So I think maybe the thing is we.
Speaker 3 (28:51):
Learned more about Carolina last night, where I don't know
how much we necessarily learned about Duke. I think we
just kind of know that they're a really, really solid
team that can win this conference this season.
Speaker 1 (29:03):
All right, we have time for one more SoundBite, Flounder,
what else you got for the people?
Speaker 3 (29:07):
Let's go to kankin Nipple because he was on with
Jimmy Fallon. That's right, the tonight show with Jimmy Fallon.
He was talking about inviting his teammates over to his
house for dinner.
Speaker 4 (29:19):
Your mom had everybody over.
Speaker 2 (29:20):
Did your mom know that team was coming over?
Speaker 5 (29:23):
Yeah, So my buddies or my teammates know that I'm
from from Milwaukee. So they're like, Con, where we're going,
where we're going to eat? And I'm like, well, I'm
going home. Yeah, actually where you guys see my family?
And they're like, well, I guess we're going to CON's.
Speaker 2 (29:34):
House And like, hey, mom and.
Speaker 5 (29:39):
My parents were like, you know, invite anybody over, and
I was like, I think I'm gonna invite the whole
team over.
Speaker 2 (29:44):
Where are you going?
Speaker 5 (29:45):
So mom was ready twenty five pounds of chicken fihetos,
No way, is that right?
Speaker 2 (29:49):
Yeah? She was ready.
Speaker 4 (29:50):
That's a good mom.
Speaker 2 (29:51):
I met your mom. She's gorgeous, by the way.
Speaker 4 (29:53):
That's a good mom.
Speaker 2 (29:54):
Right there.
Speaker 6 (29:54):
Did you feel did you feel fun to go back
to town with the whole Charlotte Hornets?
Speaker 2 (29:59):
Oh yeah it was great. Yeah, it was great.
Speaker 5 (30:00):
You know, always good to go home and you know,
to do it and play play in front of the
play the Bucks. That's the team you grew up rooting for,
and you know, playing in front a bunch of family
of friends.
Speaker 2 (30:08):
It was great. How did you get did everyone?
Speaker 6 (30:10):
Did you take the team bus there?
Speaker 5 (30:12):
Yeah, we took the team bus. Uh yeah, that's a
that's a trip. Turning onto your street and seeing all
the neighbors and stuff coming down in this big old
coach bus.
Speaker 4 (30:23):
And you're like, look at me, that's up.
Speaker 2 (30:25):
God, hi neighbors. Yeah, I used to trouble your driveway.
Speaker 4 (30:28):
Yeah all right.
Speaker 3 (30:30):
So did you watch the appearance on Jimmy Fallon, What
did you think about Con?
Speaker 1 (30:34):
I just watched. I just watched it afterwards. I didn't
watch it live. I was too busy watching college basketball,
of course.
Speaker 2 (30:40):
But yeah, what's.
Speaker 1 (30:42):
Interesting to me is that kan Ka Nipple is starting
to play to the celebrity role a little bit more
so when this process started. During the whole pre draft process,
Con wasn't given us a whole lot. He felt uncomfortable
in front of the camera. I feel like, I don't
know if you feel this way. CON's getting more comfortable
on the microphone press conference, both pre and postgame interviews
(31:03):
with Shannon, interviews with Jimmy Fallon, Like, is there a
tiny bit of celebrity status here that I did? I
feel like there is, And I didn't expect that. You
talk about surprises. If you would have told me before
the season, Kankik Nipple is going to be so clear
and away the front runner to win Rookie of the Year,
so clear and away, the Eastern Conference Rookie of the
(31:24):
Month through the first real month of the season, and
he's gonna appear on Jimmy Fallon and there's actually a
legit case for him to make the All Star Game.
I would have been like, goodness, gracious, this guy is
already in the pantheon of best basketball players of all time.
Clearly that's an exaggeration the celebrity status we're raising it
for con Pretty hilarious stuff to see right here. And
I'm glad that he's more comfortable. He just might be
(31:45):
in the limelight a little bit more so. Man, he's
got the right mentality for it. I'm with it. I
love seeing the Hornets get some positive pub It's pretty rare.
We're usually catching strays, but now we have con The
direct has the direct shot of respect from Jimmy Fallon
and the rest of the people. I guess watching last night.
Good stuff from con On, Jimmy Fallon. And then here's
(32:06):
the question before we go to break, best talk show
host of all time? Like TV talk show host of
all time seven oh four five, seven ninety six ten,
let us know your thoughts.
Speaker 2 (32:15):
It's the walk off coming up.
Speaker 4 (32:16):
Next job for a big crow.
Speaker 2 (32:28):
An you challenge for me to a walk off? Oh yeah,
that's a walk off challenge, my friend, It's a walk off.
Speaker 6 (32:39):
It's a walk hover.
Speaker 1 (32:42):
Best TV talk show hosts of all time. We're getting
to it, before we get to the walk off on
West and Walker people writing into the fandual text line
Phil D's that's it.
Speaker 2 (32:52):
There's nothing else to the.
Speaker 1 (32:53):
Name, he writes in Best talk Show Host of All Time.
It's Johnny Carson number one, Conan O'Brien number two, David
Letterman number three. I know a lot of people are
gonna write Johnny Carson he is before our time.
Speaker 3 (33:05):
Yes, I never watched Johnny Carson, so I can't say him.
Speaker 1 (33:08):
I do know Johnny Carson to be considered the go
by many, and I've also seen plenty of clips. My
mom used to have a VHS tape of Johnny Carson's
best moments that I did enjoy as a kid. Bet
Middler singing to Johnny as he's tearing up all of it.
I do understand the goatniss that is Johnny Carson. My
guy was Conan to me, he's the best of all time,
at least in my lifetime. So I like Conen being
(33:31):
number two. David Letterman also good. Chris and Florence in Italy.
Chris and Florence Italy, says Walker, probably before your time. Yeah,
Johnny Carson, hands down. I like Bigkat Dan writing in
Ricky Lake daytime arrest. You know who Ricky Lake is,
flounder Ricky Lake, I do, Okay, you do, all right?
Speaker 2 (33:49):
I didn't know if you.
Speaker 1 (33:50):
The way I was going to connect her to you
is she was Doug Hefferndon's sister and King of Queen's
That is right, That's right. Yeah, that's how I best know.
But of course I remember her being a talk show
host also Late Night Arsenio Hall, who just was atop
the world for a while. We're scrolling, We're scrolling some more.
Yea panther bo going Conan O'Brien and Andy Richter chef
(34:11):
chat saying, Craig Ferguson never a monster, Craig Ferguson, guy.
But really, all that's just because I didn't watch a
whole lot of them. It's not because I didn't like it.
All right, all right, dude, are you okay? But who's
your answer to this question?
Speaker 3 (34:23):
Do I personally like Jay Leno when he was on
on nbcity.
Speaker 1 (34:27):
I have not seen anybody I was wondering if I
was gonna get any jay Leno mentioned.
Speaker 2 (34:31):
Not many people. In fact, I don't see one jay
Leno mentioned.
Speaker 3 (34:34):
Yeah, I always liked him growing up, I thought he
was funny.
Speaker 4 (34:38):
Now yeah, you know, not necessarily, but you know.
Speaker 1 (34:41):
Yeah, I never I always thought it was I mean
Conan with the puppet dance to open up the monologue.
I always thought it was great. And then the dog
what was his name, the rottweiler, the comic dog. I
forget what he was.
Speaker 4 (34:54):
Oh, yeah, yeah, I know who you're talking about.
Speaker 1 (34:56):
Yeah, great stuff, all right? What's on tap? Present by
Twin Peaks. Twin Peaks has locations in Concord and Fourth
mil Twin Peaks is a local sports lodge, come in
from made from scratch food and signature twenty nine degree
draft Beers ACC SEC Challenge Tonight, ACC on top of
the SEC so far six to three? Can the ACC
(35:17):
bring it home? It starts with a bang off the rip?
Seven point fifteen Arkansas hosting Louisville. The Cardinals are the
sixth best team in the country, Arkansas just in the
top twenty five, right there at number twenty five. This
is the one that the ACC has to get. I
think if we have a chance of pulling off the
upset too many people coming into this challenge.
Speaker 2 (35:37):
Whatich you got here? With Louisville Arkansas there flounder.
Speaker 4 (35:39):
Yeah, I think Louisville's gonna win this game.
Speaker 3 (35:41):
I know it's on the road at Arkansas, but you know,
Arkansas taking a couple of losses early on in the season,
don't necessarily think they're the immovable force. I think it'll
be a close game, There's no doubt about that. You
do have to imagine that John Caliperry still probably holds
a little bit of hate in his heart for Louisville
from all of his time at Kentucky. But I think
(36:03):
the way that Louisville scores it offensively, I think that's
going to be really tough for Arkansas to keep up with.
So it'll be a close game. But I do think
that Louisville prevails.
Speaker 1 (36:12):
Again seven to fifteen on ESPN, that would give seven
victories to the ACC at that point. Clemson hitting the road,
they take on Alabama tonight at seven to fifteen, you
think the Tigers can pull off the upset.
Speaker 4 (36:23):
I do not.
Speaker 3 (36:25):
I think the Crimson tide, with how high paced their
offense is, that's certainly going to give Clemson a little
bit of trouble.
Speaker 4 (36:30):
I think Clemson will be a solid team this year.
Speaker 3 (36:33):
I think they'll be more towards the bubble than where
they've been the last few years when they've made the
NCAA Tournament. So yeah, I think again, maybe they compete
a little bit in this one. But Alabama, especially at home,
I think I got to go with the Crimson tide.
Speaker 1 (36:48):
Yeah, Alabama this year is five. They are five and two.
They've lost to the second and best team in the
country at the time in Purdue, and they lost to
the twelfth best team in Gonzaga, so they get a bit.
Their wins aren't all that impressive outside of Saint John's.
Speaker 2 (37:03):
I guess.
Speaker 1 (37:03):
Earlier in the year with Saint John's they beat them
one oh three to ninety six.
Speaker 2 (37:09):
Saint John's.
Speaker 1 (37:10):
On the season so far, they're four and three though,
so now that win doesn't even look All of.
Speaker 4 (37:15):
Their losses have come to teams that are.
Speaker 2 (37:17):
Ranked Alabamah, Iowa State, and Auburn.
Speaker 1 (37:20):
So as we move on in the challenge LSU Boston
College Vanderbilt hosting SMU, that's a sneaky one. SMU haven't
lost a game yet. FLOUN that's right, they are eight
and oh. Now they don't have an impressive win on
their schedule maybe outside of Butler, who looks to be
pretty good, but other than that, I mean it's been
against lesser competition. Vanderbilt the seventeenth, the best team in
(37:44):
the country. I think if you want to win the Challenge,
you might have to ask SMU to step up and
get this victory. If just to give you a little cushion,
NC State they play Auburn, that's going to be a
rough game for the wolf Pack, especially with it being
on the road. SMU would go a long way if
they win and helping the ACC win this Challenge.
Speaker 3 (38:01):
Yeah, they certainly would, and that's going to be a
tough one.
Speaker 1 (38:04):
Man.
Speaker 3 (38:04):
Vanderbilt's playing really good out of the gate. They just
won the Battle for Atlantis. Now, I know that the
Battle for Atlanta's not normally the type of field that
we're used to seeing out there, but still pretty impressive
from that group, especially you know, in year two under
Mark Byington, I think this is a team that you know,
for SMU, I don't know what to expect from them
(38:25):
coming into the year. I think that they have a
chance to be pretty decent. We know they've got a
lot of nil money that they like to spend so
maybe this is a team that we haven't really talked
about that could potentially sneak up in the ACC and
become one of those more difficult games. But I do
believe that going into this SMU not going to be favored,
(38:45):
probably shouldn't be. But let's see if they can compete
with them. I'm not counting on them as one of
the wins though. If we're trying to get to nine,
that's not one that I'm counting on.
Speaker 1 (38:55):
All right, So Auburn and c State. Auburn the twentieth
ranked team in the country or they're six and two.
Their only losses have come against Houston, where they lost
by one, and they lost to Michigan by thirty beat down,
they suffered. They did beat Saint John's, they did beat
It's about it. So it's still early, but still a
(39:15):
tough one. NC State had a rough showing out West,
so we'll see if State can bounce back with a
big win on the road against Auburn. Do you think
State wins tonight or are they going to suffer their third.
Speaker 2 (39:25):
Loss of the year. I know you would love it
the reckoning.
Speaker 3 (39:29):
I yeah, Look, I think I think that there's gonna
be an immense level of fight in this game from
NC State, because the thing is is that the two
losses that they took out.
Speaker 4 (39:41):
There, we don't really know how good those losses are.
Speaker 3 (39:44):
Like, we don't know if Texas is going to be
an NCAA tournament team seton Hall. We have no idea
what that team's gonna be. Could they, you know, come
out of nowhere sort of surprise some people in the
Big East. Yeah, they could because I love their coach,
love Shaheen Holloway.
Speaker 4 (39:58):
But this feels like a big one for NC State.
I think they'll play like it.
Speaker 3 (40:02):
But I just wonder going into that environment, one of
the more raucous environments in all of college basketball, one
that doesn't probably get talked about enough. I wonder if
they can pull it off. Auburn's going to be hungry
after the player's era. I'll probably I'll pick Auburn, But
I do think NC State has a legit shot at
(40:24):
this one.
Speaker 1 (40:24):
All right, Texas, Virginia. I think Virginia has a shot
against the Yes and Georgia Tech Mississippi State.
Speaker 2 (40:31):
That's gonna be a bad lie.
Speaker 3 (40:32):
SEC come on, that's a blicker, But you got to
find a way to get it done.
Speaker 2 (40:36):
That's right.
Speaker 1 (40:37):
It still counts as one point, just like all the
other victories. Georgia Tech, Mississippi State. That will be the
nightcap at nine to fifteen, Texas, Virginia, Auburn, NC State
also tipping off at nine to fifteen, as is Vanderbilt
and SMU. That'll do it for Western Walker floundg filling
in tomorrow. We have Al Wallace in studio. We'll be
back with you from twelve to three. Coming up next,
(40:57):
it's the Kyle Bailey Show alongside Smoke Loow.
Speaker 2 (41:03):
Listen to The Wes and Walker Show.
Speaker 6 (41:05):
Week is from noon to three only on Sports Radio
