Speaker 1 (00:00):
You're listening to the Wes and Walker show.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
So favorite Draft Day moments in Panthers history, Draft Day
moments ever, all of this stuff.
Speaker 1 (00:08):
Hello, it's Wes. We got to say rr Peter Spranger.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
You know I'm saying, Jerry Springer and Walker, Well, I'm
gonna ask you a questions. It is the day of
the number one overall selection. This is true, and you
told me to stop talking about the NFL draft. Just
to say, hold on, let's send an rip out to
Jerry Springe. You the part of our show up only
on Sports Radio ninety two point seven FM WFNZ.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
He's a part of our show mates.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
One more hour to go on Western Walker Sports Radio
ninety two seven wfn Z. The Charlotte forty nine ers, well,
they're not doing a whole lot of winning these days.
It's unfortunate. I had them going bowling. A little bit
of bias baked into that prediction, but I did think
they were going to win at least five games.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
They're not going to win five games. West.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
I'm glad they got one, and we'll see exactly how
the season plays out. That you play again on Friday.
By the way, they'll be out there at Jerry Richardson Stadium.
So another home game, I'll be out there tailgating at
four point thirty. I'm gonna try to get out there.
It's the environment, like well, at the beginning, it's pretty fun. Dranks,
the flowing, you havet to miss them. Yeah, tailgates are
the couds and shoulds classic undefead.
Speaker 3 (01:25):
So we're seeing bear stands, right, we're seeing bear sections
in the stands. Has Charlotte had the moment that these
other schools that are just downright terrible have had where
you get a bunch of bros in the section, take
their shirts off and start swinging them around their heads.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
Yeah, I don't know if I've seen a lot of
that where I am.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
Okay, Perhaps Hunter can answer that question more so than
I can. When I was tailgating this past game, say,
there wasn't as many cars in the parking lot the
west deck was. It was not a lot of people
out there, man, at least not for me. So anyways,
let's go to the man that knows a lot about
Charlotte fie ball right now, Hunter Bailey, Charlotte Observer Highway
forty nine podcast. He joined us now on the phone
(02:06):
line Hunter, how are you doing, man.
Speaker 4 (02:09):
Fellas and so to answer your question, yes, actually, starting
the fourth quarter of this last game, there or a
bunch of shirtless dudes in the student section sing in
the shirt like some terrible towels watching some terrible football.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (02:21):
Yes, it's made its way to Charlotte. Yes, we're going.
Speaker 5 (02:26):
To be a part of this.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
When we're getting blown out, by the way on Saturday
against Virginia, We're going to find that section. Me and
fiddy shirts just harpso off, going crazy. Is this a
thing that's happening in college football all around college football? Okay,
I wonder if this is a I'm too old thing.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
North Texas is who they play, by the way. North
Texas is six and one on the year. They're a
very good football team, so it might be rough. I
wanted to go back with the Mike Hill stuff, though, Hunter,
because we had you on right away and I appreciate
you being so flexible with your time. A few days
have past since Mike Hill was relieved of his athletic
director duties, and it looks like, even if the timing
(03:01):
was weird, Hunter, it feels like a lot of this
comes down to money.
Speaker 1 (03:05):
Lack of funds.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
Is that how you see it based on some of
the information that's coming out that Mike Hill's no longer
ad Yeah, because the football program has not been winning
football games.
Speaker 1 (03:14):
That's a real issue.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
But is it really just because there was a disagreement
on how they were going to increase their funds as
this year went on.
Speaker 4 (03:24):
I think that's that's the best one encapsulated what you
just said there. That's how I understand it. Like you said,
it was kind of a shockwave when it happened. It
just felt random to extend them through twenty thirty, literally
thirteen months ago. And then you know, midway through six
games through the season with his is third football higher
(03:45):
say okay, appreciate it. Here's two million, get out the door. Basically,
So the nil side of things has been number one
focus for Charlotte and this year's team. I finally got
a number on it, right around one point four million.
And to put that in perspective in the conference, I
don't have every school, but just take a look at
(04:05):
South Florida at the top of the league, Charlotte all
the way at the bottom. South Florida's up around eight million.
So you know, almost seven million dollar difference there in
roster construction, and you see it on the field. I
mean I talked to Reed Willaford, Charlotte's leading tractler from
last year, after the South Florida game, and I just
(04:25):
asked him about the speed of that Bulls team and
he just busted out laughing. And it's Charlotte kind of
knew going in they couldn't compete, whether it's schematic to whatever.
The talent is just so much different, and I think,
I mean, you see in the NFL the talent, there
are some star players, there's a lot of big names,
but the coaching is really what separates in the NFL.
But in college, you've got a former NFL draft pick
(04:49):
getting guarded by a future insurance salesman in the slot.
You know who's gonna win that match up to the
time matters a ton, Whereas the coaching, I think is
a little lesser on that front. Charlotte just top to bottom,
they don't have the talent to compete in this league.
And I asked him straight up, what's the valuation of
this team?
Speaker 1 (05:09):
What do you need moving forward?
Speaker 4 (05:10):
And he didn't necessarily provide clarification on the exact total
or who's making what. But he did talk about the
transfer portal window which is now changing, meaning that there's
only one window now. So where's passed who's been one
in the spring. So it's like as soon as the
spring game's over, there's fifty sixty players coming from each
school in the portal to now it's just one window
(05:33):
and it's in January. But what that means for Charlotte
is the time to raise that money to shell it
out for future recruits, whether it's high school, whether it's
guys through the portal. You've got one window to raise
that money now. So that window is now in January
for Charlotte, whereas before they had an opportunity in December
they could go back to the well, come back out
(05:55):
around springtime and add to the team. So a lot
is changing for them and I think ramping up that
NIL process is top top priority right now.
Speaker 6 (06:03):
Hunter Bailey joins us on a body Works Plus guest
hotline Hunter, what is the spirit of the collective as Charlotte,
how much do they want to donate? Is this you
know a collector that's sitting there just itching to win
and willing to do whatever, or are they kind of
lse fail about it.
Speaker 4 (06:19):
I think it goes back and forth because I mean,
when I think football, they haven't really had this level
of success during the NIL era. You think the last
winning record, winning season they've had, and the only one
is in twenty nineteen, kind of prior to NIL kicking off.
But then you look say men's basketball, for example, just
two seasons ago, they're beating ranked teams at home, their
(06:40):
top of the league, hanging out in the top three
in the American on the men's basketball side of things,
and you see like that fan base start rushing back.
You can tell that the NIL is important at Charlotte,
and they made efforts to keep some of those guys
like Nick Gray's, like the Todd Patterson, like Ilor Milicic,
and ultimately bigger schools favored to get out bigger chunks
of change. I think where they are now, I think
(07:04):
the buying is there. Like with football, they're trying to
get up to this four million dollar kind of echelon,
which still isn't in that realm or South Florida, but
is making leaves and bounds from where they are now.
Speaker 1 (07:16):
So I think the.
Speaker 4 (07:17):
Downership is definitely eager but I mean I've seen stuff
on Twitter with crowdsourcing, with fans putting it together like
people Tim Avin talked about it today. There's one hundred
and ninety thousand living alumni within an hour and a
half of the school, and you want them to want
to give back. But I think whether it's a Chicken
the X situation or whatever, they need to see some commitment.
(07:39):
And I think that's part of the reason on the
Mike Hill side of things, why they made that move.
Speaker 6 (07:43):
Hanna, Does Tim Abbin have an even bigger job in
front of him than you even first envisioned he would?
Speaker 4 (07:49):
I think so, And I don't think, like we talked
about it on our podcast, like Fly on the Wall,
when that might kill news comes out, I wonder what
Tim Abbot's thinking. You go from twenty years on the
job at Ohio, three straight winning seasons, a couple coach
of the years Matt Titel, you take this job in Charlotte,
you make the move making a couple hundred thousand dollars
(08:10):
more a year, and a lot of that was Mike
Hill being the primary guy working with them working on
this decision. They had a handshake decision behind the scenes
when that coaching search just felt like it continued to
go on to know, you know, six games in, now
your ad is gone? And does that tighten his leash
(08:31):
when there's a new ad that's put in. I just
I think how they handled that its key. But when
I look at this program itself, it felt like the
Biffoji era was interesting. I mean he had grabbed all
the headlines, like anytime Biff spoke it was like must
see TV. The product on the field didn't match that.
And that was with more nil and with higher level
(08:53):
talented players. And I think when I look at this
team now, it's okay, where do you go from here?
Is that fundraising going to be?
Speaker 1 (09:01):
Like?
Speaker 4 (09:01):
Because that they're going to compete the American which we
see this league feels like this gets better every year.
Right now they're gonna need a lot more. So Yeah,
I think I think Tim's job is even harder, and
I think it starts. I mean, guys, he gave his
full he put the bat signal today. He said, if
you're an offensive or defensive lineman and you want playing time,
come to Charlotte. He gave his email, said t Alban
(09:21):
at UNCC do EU reach out to him with the
film The Bat signals out, guys, I think he knows
that this team needs a massive overhaul to get to
where he wants to take him.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
All Right, So, Hunter, how warried are you about the future?
Because I think we both like Tim Albin. I've said
it a million times. It's hard to look at that
resume and argue against it. What are you gonna do
find somebody that has more ten win seasons in a row?
Good luck? Those guys aren't available. And yet we got one,
even with us having one victory, and that one victory
has come against Monmouth.
Speaker 1 (09:52):
So yeah, it's tough for me.
Speaker 2 (09:54):
I don't want Tim Albin to go anywhere, and yet
we talk about all of the things surrounding this program
and it is kind of hard to find the hope.
How much hope do you have if I'm having a
hard time finding it?
Speaker 4 (10:06):
Yeah, So admittedly I'm shocked that we were, like, we're
having this conversation so early in his tenure, just based
on I mean, and I think they might kill firing
accelerates that topic because I don't know, when you look
at Tim, you look across the conference, right Temple, a
team that had won more than three games, had won
a conference road game since twenty nineteen, just came in
(10:30):
on homecoming and Boat raced you.
Speaker 3 (10:33):
Right.
Speaker 4 (10:33):
So it's like teams can do it, right. They can
go from a struggling team like South Florida winning one
or two games a year to go and bowling three
straight times nationally ranked. Like it can be done in
this league if you have the support the resources. So
I think while it is concerning that it's early that
we're having this conversation and Tim is saying these things,
(10:55):
it might be good in the long term to maybe
get out of that shell of saying, no, I've got
the resources I need. It's no, it's we need all
the help we can get, because if you're not, I
guess if you're not going out there and saying this
is what we're trying to do, we're putting that commitment
towards accelerating the football program, which is still just thirteen
years old. I think it's going to continue in this
(11:16):
kind of middling section of the bottom third of the
American and that's what we've seen even in the first
two years under Pogi. They had some success last year
they won five games, but even then, I mean two
of those were without this. So while, like I say,
while it is early to be talking about these things,
it might pay offered him in the long term because
I do think he wants to be here, because I
(11:38):
just can't understand why you make that move, like I say,
leaving a twenty year job to come to Charlotte knowing
that the NIL isn't in a great place. So maybe
good that they're having the conversations now that benefits them
in the long run.
Speaker 6 (11:52):
Hannah, looking at the positive, I mean, who is one
player on offense and defense that they must keep for
next season?
Speaker 1 (11:59):
In opinion?
Speaker 4 (12:02):
Yeah, on defense, I just keep looking in the linebacker room.
Kaden Schmidt. He's a guy, man, He's a dude who's
a stud at Ohio, played a little bit. Shave Taylor
is another guy. I think he's going to be on
this kind of eligibility fence, but I'm not one hundred
percent sure if you'll be able to play next year
or not. It kind of feels like anyone can get
an extra year in today's college football. On offense, you're
(12:27):
looking around for that guy because they've got so many
The receivers are older. Sean Brown, you j Mason, Javin Nicholas,
they are going to be out of eligibility. So now
you're looking back at Connor Harrell. I think he's probably
priority number one right now, unless they're going to go
out with this new founded eye on money and snag
a big fish at quarterback. But I think Harrow, at
(12:47):
least from what we saw, the most dynamic player at
the position. Gives him the most promised So if they're
going to keep building, I'd say, yeah, look look at
quarterback for now.
Speaker 2 (12:59):
Her last question and when it comes to looking for
the new athletic director, where are we in that process?
Speaker 1 (13:04):
Now?
Speaker 2 (13:04):
How soon do you expect an athletic director to be named?
I guess outside of the interim with Josh Humphrey, what
can you tell us about that search?
Speaker 4 (13:14):
Yeah, the main answer that I've gotten is there is
no timeline. It's too early, which I think is kind
of puzzling to me, because if you know you're going
to make this move and you're going to put someone
with no athletics experience in that scene, you have to
have maybe an accelerated timeline, accelerated search. Bore already has
(13:34):
a plan in place, You're just waiting to make that higher,
so I'll be interested to see that I've been able
to get any information. No one will budge on that,
but everything I've heard from the conversation with Gabor Chancellor
Gaber is no timeline as of now, but the ball
is at least rolling, is what I'm told.
Speaker 2 (13:53):
Hunter Bailey Charlotte Observer Highway forty nine podcast. Follow him
on Twitter at Hunter Underscore Bailey forty five. He covers
the AR forty nine ers as well and better than
anybody out there, and we appreciate his time with us
every single week right here on Western Walker Sports rated
ninety two seven WFNZ. Hunter, we appreciate it, man. I'll
see you out there Friday Fair.
Speaker 4 (14:12):
See that I'm appreciate you.
Speaker 2 (14:13):
But I will keep my shirt on. I will not
be waving it around like Pete Poplo.
Speaker 1 (14:17):
Thank Man Wes Bron.
Speaker 6 (14:18):
I was thinking about what he said about that that
budget him putting the best signal out man. I'll have
told him, Hey, I'll come over, give me twenty five
percent of that you want to play for us. I'm
saying if I was coming out of high school, I
would have said, hey, give me twenty five percent.
Speaker 2 (14:32):
I thought you were saying you don't have any more
eligibility left. Yeah, man, you know this back is not
a lot of snaps left in his back. It depends
on what day it is. Can you give me that
would be interesting. Maybe if we put you out there
for a five snap situational tackle. Yeah, situation got We're
a dire straight if we have a situational tackle. This
turn fifteen West, come on, we need we need you
(14:53):
to hold on for dear life, even if it means
you're actually holding and just hide it.
Speaker 6 (14:58):
And I'm gonna have to warm up up the whole time, Like,
I can't be sitting over there just hanging out, especially
when it was cold. I can't be hanging out. I'm
gonna be able to jog in. You canna be doing
working sets, doing everything.
Speaker 1 (15:09):
Now.
Speaker 5 (15:09):
What is cold?
Speaker 3 (15:10):
That also is important because Walker is apparently freezing today.
Speaker 5 (15:14):
Apparently outside was too much for him.
Speaker 3 (15:18):
He had to put on the sweater and then he
said he was cold in the studio.
Speaker 6 (15:21):
It was chilly this morning. I'd say we started dipping
into the forties. We talked forty nine and below. I
got to keep moving. It looked it was in the
mid to high fifties. Getting out of the house today,
and then in the fishbowl, I was cold. That's the
issue where it was sixty six sixty seven degrees out there.
Speaker 3 (15:37):
Well, that's your reason for at your own fall. You
know you can adjust the third.
Speaker 2 (15:40):
I just you know that's right. I just walked out.
I was like focused on work. I was, honestly, I
really was focused on where I liked them. So I
was like, why am I I don't I should have
changed it. You're right about that, But I don't know.
Speaker 1 (15:52):
Man.
Speaker 2 (15:52):
I couldn't play football in the warm weather. I couldn't
play tackle in the cold weather. It could be Goldilocks weather,
and I'm not gonna be able to play tackle. I
like the idea though, of you just kick sliding the
entire game until it's third and fifteen and they call
you off for that one snap.
Speaker 6 (16:05):
Just Monday, she's calling for Bryce, he said, Wes, your
son could probably produce for this UNCC team with the
WESTY talked about.
Speaker 2 (16:12):
Yes, look, I know he's not playing football right now.
He's also kind of a monster at fourteen. And I
know you love the forty nine ers program. You want
them to be good. They didn't have a football team
when you were coming out of high school. Yeah, let
him fulfill your forty nine ers legacy. Would you rather
(16:32):
have it on the basketball side, that would be maybe.
Have you ever heard of Julius Peppers? That's a fact.
You bring up a good point there, and I'm not listen.
I'm not agreed to go. I'm not moved by money
like that. Give us a decent nil deal music. You
must get this done. Sorry, Bryce, Hey, give us something decent.
You know we're here. Here's what I'll say, Bryce, We're
going to keep that green light card full. Yeah, as
much as we passed. That's the key to his heart
(16:53):
right there, I hope.
Speaker 6 (16:55):
And can you throw in something like you know, like
what we talked about with the Chipotle, Yeah, he had
the card if Salceritas, Okay, that's a prospect. Salceta is
kind of bad at them all, Yes, and they know
what you gotta do is you gotta do it for
Berria Taco and Concord that's his favorite place.
Speaker 1 (17:10):
All right.
Speaker 6 (17:11):
We can throw that in a couple of cute girls, uh,
you know, to woo him as well.
Speaker 1 (17:16):
Then I think we talk with you and Chick on
the team. We're sure to with the Champions.
Speaker 6 (17:22):
Yeah, that's where we at Beeria Taco a little bit
of cash.
Speaker 2 (17:26):
It's Western Walker Sports Radio ninety two to seven WFNZ
the Live Wires coming up next thanks to Hunter Bailey
joining us last segment. We'll put that interview on the
website WFNZ dot com. Also, anywhere you get your podcast,
(17:49):
just go search Western Walker, Apple, Spotify. We mean it
when we say anywhere you get your pods. We also
have a WFNZ.
Speaker 1 (17:55):
App you guys should try out.
Speaker 2 (17:57):
And if you have Apple Music, you can go listen
to WFNZ on Apple. I mean not even just the podcast.
You can listen to live radio on your apples. I
mean there's really not any excuse to not listen to
West and Walker or WFNZ really all day long.
Speaker 6 (18:13):
Yeah, I mean that's probably how people know how we look.
I want to know out there from the fan base,
let us know. In the FANDUL text line, how do
you guys know who we are? When you see us?
How do you find us? Do you go look it
up on the website? Do you look at the app
and you look at the picture. Because when I was
on the way to Texas, I ran into Oh I
hate it. Because he's one of our top texts too.
Speaker 1 (18:33):
Man.
Speaker 6 (18:34):
But he ran into me, and you know, it's like
six in the morning and I'm walking through the airport
and uh, He's like, man, I just ran in the
walker yesterday and now I run into you today, Like dope,
so you ran into me?
Speaker 5 (18:45):
Yeah yeah, this is this is an equally.
Speaker 6 (18:47):
Bad this was there was Hugo who it was in
the airport. So I think that's always cool when people right.
I mean, I was in Target last Thursday looking at
jeans and the Levi and somebody was like, yo, I
thought he thought I was EJ.
Speaker 1 (19:02):
Manuel.
Speaker 6 (19:03):
At first He's like, and you the dude from uh,
that's the wrong quarterback, he said. He said, don't you
do guy from ACC something ACC Network or something.
Speaker 1 (19:11):
And I was like, oh, I said he must take
imj Manuel.
Speaker 6 (19:14):
I was like no, He's like no West West Warner right,
And I was like oh yeah, yeah yeah.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
So I don't know what it is about you and
f s u qbs because people think you look like
Jameis Winston all the time.
Speaker 6 (19:24):
I had a guy in the gym two weeks ago.
He hit me with Cam Newton Jameis Winston. What Yeah, yeah,
even with Cam Jameis Winston, he was a guy on
a treadmill. He's like, hey, man, people tell you look
like such and such, which I'm that guy too. There's
a guy there's a short Spanish guy that works out
in my gym looks just like Baker Mayfield. Like It's
(19:44):
like I said, do if people tell you look like
Baker Mayfield, I'm definitely that guy. If I see somebody
that looks exactly like a celeb, I'm gonna go and say, hey,
people tell you you look like such and such.
Speaker 2 (19:53):
We've talked about this a million times about what we get.
I've told a bunch of different stories on what I've gotten.
Jameis Winston and E. J. Man and You'll seem to
be common ones because when we talked with j Manuel
at the Army Navy game, I think you said that
to him and he said down that you oftentimes get
called DJ Manual.
Speaker 1 (20:08):
Yep.
Speaker 6 (20:08):
People think that we look a lot of like I
should have asked that that Chilean coach of Virginia she
like Aubrey Plaza.
Speaker 1 (20:15):
I want to ask her interest, but I don't get
a chance.
Speaker 2 (20:19):
So all right, Aubrey Plaza, Okay, Plaza Plaza every want
to talk about. Lamar said on the Fandal text line
that he ran into you at Whiskey Warehouse. Yes, he did,
Whiskey Warehouse. I've been there in a minute, good little spot.
Speaker 1 (20:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (20:33):
I was hanging out, you know, I'm a fan friend
and I saw looking from the distance. I said, this
guy must listen to the show, because he just kept
looking at and he said something.
Speaker 2 (20:41):
Oh my god, this sounds so self involved. I apologize
because I'm about to tell a story as well. But
there have been a couple of times where I like,
there's been one time that I can think of in
the last couple of weeks where somebody keeps eyeballing me.
So it just just keeps doing it, keeps doing it,
keeps doing it, and at some point I just don't
want that to happen in more. And it's not out
of any hatred. I don't hate the guy. It's just
(21:03):
let's make something shake. So I go up and I
was like, hey, man, how's it going. He's like, are you?
And then that's how it goes down. But they were
standing in a corner. Then it's when he nudges his
buddy and then points my direction. Yeah, I'm like, all right, man,
and it's so self involved. This all feels very It's funny.
Speaker 6 (21:18):
I mean, because do you think about that when I'm
out now, Like when people look at me sometimes I
don't know.
Speaker 1 (21:23):
I'm like, do they know who I am?
Speaker 6 (21:27):
And they just don't want to say something because I've
had lots of interactions.
Speaker 1 (21:31):
Out in public.
Speaker 2 (21:31):
JT from CLTFCTV says, I think of how Walker didn't
get the memo about a pick being taken for media thumbnails,
and I guess it's because I'm just at one I
don't know about specifically for thumbnails. I just am not
good at taking pictures. You know this about me? And
I wish I would have worn something that was a
(21:52):
little bit more me. I tried to look nice in
that picture. Wes was wearing the loudest, most colorful jacket ever,
and I wish I would have just and something that
was a little bit more me. Anyways, I don't I'm
wearing this polo and I hate that picture. It's up
on the doghouse as well. I can't stand it. And
we also have some other people writing in about maybe
times that they've either seen us or they're giving you
(22:15):
some love for the Obrey Plaza. I guess crush that
you kind of have on her. You're a big I
didn't know that you were an Abrey Plaza fan. Oh yeah,
I like her.
Speaker 1 (22:24):
There you go.
Speaker 3 (22:24):
Okay, you're ready to move on live wire time. You
know what's sad? Somebody just texted in that they've seen
us before. Where have they seen us?
Speaker 1 (22:32):
A restaurant?
Speaker 3 (22:34):
Well, a fast food restaurant? No, no, it is to
sit down restaurant.
Speaker 2 (22:38):
That's all right, that's okay. I thought it was gonna
be bo Jangles or Taco Bell.
Speaker 5 (22:43):
It's our little neighborhood pizza joint, mea familia.
Speaker 1 (22:46):
That's not bad.
Speaker 3 (22:48):
Yeah, well, okay, like you didn't see a set of Chopped.
That would probably be a little bit better when you
see when you're saying, yeah, just you know, pizza joint,
watching these guys tear apart a pete, I.
Speaker 2 (23:00):
Don't think that's all that bad. I think that is no.
Seeing somebody at a pizza joint is more than fine.
In fact, I think you would get made fun of
more if you were seen out of chopped. I don't
mind chopped at all. Chopped is good. Waiting to try
that it's good. You should try it. You should try Hey,
anybody uh that wants to endorse West and Walker or
(23:21):
anybody that has an endorsement opportunity, we are for sale
in that way. So we will endorse Chopped, We will
endor Adorse the pizza Joint and for it.
Speaker 1 (23:29):
All right.
Speaker 2 (23:29):
I just wanted to make sure that we cleared that up.
You're ready to play some sound Floundy. Let's do it
all right, time now for the live wire with Floundy.
Speaker 3 (23:39):
In the West and the West, all right, and we'll
start with Brian Baldinger And I'll read this just as
it's written right here in the description of the clip
talks about Derek Brown's incredible hulk like strength.
Speaker 7 (23:57):
If there's a better defensive tack on football, then Derek
Brown right now, I don't know who it is. Like
just the frisbee toss that he plays with right here,
you watch him anywhere, watch him split the double team,
like just come right through it and take.
Speaker 1 (24:10):
Down the ball carrier.
Speaker 7 (24:11):
Right Sometimes he's easier to go around guys to go
make the play that time on justin fields. Now you
watch this right here, like this is just a different
type of strength, like the incredible hulk type strength.
Speaker 3 (24:31):
I as he says it in there multiple times he
breaking down Derek Brown right there. Yes, mentioned this a
little bit yesterday, but you didn't get into it too much.
Speaker 5 (24:41):
So I'm interested.
Speaker 3 (24:42):
Do you think that Derek Brown right now, the way
that he's playing, is the best defensive tackle in the
entire sport?
Speaker 1 (24:48):
Uh? Yeah, I would say so, man.
Speaker 6 (24:50):
And you know that I've been a guy that felt
like felt like he was kind of one dimensional, and
I wanted to see more from him as far as
impacting games. Even when you look at the advanced match,
he is two tenths of a point off from being
tied for the number one the tackle in the league
with the eighty nine point six, and the top guy
right now, Malie Collins of Cleveland, has an eighty nine
point eight. But no, I said, even though that was
(25:13):
the worst offensive line in the game, he was absolutely spectacular.
Speaker 1 (25:19):
His impact was felt throughout that whole game.
Speaker 6 (25:21):
But it's been that way the entire season, and obviously
with the unit becoming better, it highlights him all the more.
But I like what he's been doing in the passing game.
He's batting down balls, he's getting to the quarterback. He's
hitting the quarterback. He's becoming that two dimensional defensive tackle
that you want. I like disruptors in my opinion. You know,
you talk to Warren SAPs and some of those greats
that just get it done both ways, Chris Jones. I mean,
(25:44):
you name it, Aaron Donald. Those guys that are going
to get to the quarterback, they have value there and
they have value in the run game. He is that
guy right now, So yes, I would give him the crown.
I don't know who else would win it right now.
I would say it's Derek Brown. Brian Baldinger continues to
let us know every single week. I have to imagine
we're going to get another video next week about just
(26:04):
how great Derek Brown is. You said you thought that
was the best game you've ever seen him play, this
pass game against the Jets. I don't have any issue
with that. What I think speaks to his greatness is
you could go with a couple of other games if
you wanted to. For instance, I thought he was destroying
guys against Miami, just tossing him like rag dolls. That's
where he was I think giving you some of his
(26:24):
best pass rush by beating the guy that was trying
to block him. I emphasize trying to block him beats
him off of the line of scrimmage in point two seconds.
Boom immediately sacks to it, which is hard even if
he's not been a very good quarterback. It's hard because
he does get the football out of his hand so quickly.
Derek Brown was able to get there in a hurry.
Speaker 1 (26:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (26:43):
I think Derek Brown, what he's doing with this football team,
I think it goes to show you, man, if you
put help around him, then he can be the stalwart
and the best player on what is a good defense,
a great defense. And if you put enough help around him,
now you can start to see he accentuates everybody that
is on that side of the line.
Speaker 1 (27:01):
Fast.
Speaker 6 (27:01):
Thing is, if you want to know, because I know
a lot of weight programs now, bench press isn't as
heavily you know, just heavily pushed as it once was.
But if you want to know why people bench press, yeah,
you can watch that footage because that's exactly what he does.
He comes up, he puts those hands in that chest,
he benches you off of him and then shed you.
Speaker 1 (27:23):
And he does that on a regular couple teams.
Speaker 2 (27:25):
There are two guys trying to block him, and he
sheds them both and now it's just the running back.
All he sees as soon as he gets the football
is Derek Brown and nobody in between you and Derek Brown.
Speaker 6 (27:37):
Because you drill that as a defensive tackle, you divide
and conquer, You get rid of the first guy, and
then you whooped the second guy.
Speaker 1 (27:43):
The explorer.
Speaker 2 (27:43):
Divide and conquer, maybe a little bit coming in to
do just absolutely destroying offensive lines is what Derek Brown
is doing.
Speaker 1 (27:50):
What else you got over there? Flown? All right?
Speaker 3 (27:51):
We go to Dave Canalis because he was talking to
the media yesterday talking about Andy Dalton and he mentioned
that Excel is a guy that may show up as
his favorite target, so be prepared.
Speaker 8 (28:03):
Maybe his history, you know Aj Green, you know, big
bodies thrown to those guys. You know, he had a
good group of receivers, tight ends in Cincinnati in his past.
You know, So maybe it's that comfort level, you know,
just seeing that big frame and just you know, getting
him getting a ball within his frame that he can
do something with. But I love that chemistry. I love
I love the fact that you know, even if I
(28:23):
go back to last year. You know, Jalen Coker makes
our team because of the way that Andy was throwing
to Jalen during our our look team in our card
offense really and uh showing what he could do and
really allow showcasing Jalen's ability. So and then you know,
if he goes out there and and and it's Andy playing,
(28:43):
you know, having an opportunity to play with t Mac
and Cocher and Xavier is pretty exciting, you know, in
the group that's growing.
Speaker 3 (28:49):
All right, So coming off of this week a very
successful game for Xavier leaguet, you think there's a chance
that he can build on it with AJ Green or
AJ Green excuse me, and Dalton liking receivers like AJ
Green on the outside.
Speaker 1 (29:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (29:04):
First, I'll say I think that was the best comp
I had heard for tetor Roa when they compared him
to A J. Golson, I said, that is gad On
with how his body looks and how he plays. But yeah, man,
you gotta be excited for exal Man. I mean, nine
catches for ninety two yards. This was a guy that
I thought was on his way to being Mingo status.
But he's shown great football character by bouncing back and
(29:26):
doing what he's doing. And I think his confidence should
only be growing with the way that he played career
high nine catches ninety two yards you know, in this
game and so forth XL. Yeah, man, I think he
stands the chance to be able to benefit greatly.
Speaker 1 (29:40):
So, Yeah, the.
Speaker 2 (29:41):
Andy Dalton Xcel connection is interesting because you look at
the most targets Excel has ever received in a game.
Here you have the nine catches in this one against
the Jets. He also had ten targets only once last year.
That was actually in the game against Cincinnati, one of
Andy Dalton's starts. That's where he also had the touchdown catch.
He went for six receptions on sick six yards. I
believe that was the high mark that he put yardage
(30:03):
wise as well. Yeah, more targets, more receptions than any
other game. And also yeah, more targets receptions in yards
and now here he is doing it again with Andy
Dalton at QB. So there is a connection between those
two and Effectsale can use this as a launching pad
to then become a part of the rotation. More so
when Bryce Young isn't at quarterback than fantastic Jalen Coker
(30:23):
comment is also interesting there where Bryce can spread it
around a little bit more. Hopefully we get more good
things to come for Excel, because you know how badly
I want it to work for him. A lot of
Panthers fans want it badly to work for him. Some
nice signs the last couple of weeks or so, what
she got over there forat all?
Speaker 3 (30:39):
Right, let's go to head coach of the Charlotte Hornets,
a man I like to affectionately call Chuck Lee. It's
a badass name. I think it's great. I think he's
got the all three egos. We've talked about this before,
but here's Chuck talking about the two starter.
Speaker 5 (30:54):
Spots that are still up for grafts.
Speaker 4 (30:56):
Oh, there's there's three starters that are probably pretty clear
and everybody mine, and.
Speaker 1 (31:00):
Then the other two spots that you have to earn it,
and it's going to be based upon.
Speaker 6 (31:06):
How you form and how you earn it at practice, and.
Speaker 4 (31:09):
How you earn trust and the poaching staff and the
teammates and also again some matchup type oppositions today.
Speaker 6 (31:14):
So I think that the guys have been to focused
on Moton R from practice, practice, game.
Speaker 1 (31:20):
Game and solviattempts rem interesting. What about an if?
Speaker 3 (31:25):
All right, so you've got two starter spots that are
up for grabs. Do you guys think that these will
be solved early on in the season or do you
think this is a debate that gets solved as we
go later on in the season. Of course, talking about
the two guard spot and the center spot.
Speaker 6 (31:42):
Oh, that's a good one. I think that it will
probably take I'm going to go with about a good
twenty twenty. Oh, that's that's wrong. I would say within
the first ten to fifteen games, I think you might
be able to start to get some real answers on
what you want to do.
Speaker 2 (31:59):
Yeah, the math people would tell you about twenty games
is when you start to understand things about your team.
So I don't think twenty twenty five is all that bad.
To be honest with you, we did see Charles Lee
Chuck Lee. I do like Chuck Lee.
Speaker 1 (32:11):
By the way.
Speaker 2 (32:12):
That's when he gets mad, if he starts yelling at dudes,
that's when you have brought out the chuckster in all
of it. I think he's going to experiment a little
bit at five. It's going to be matchup based with
Musadiabat not being nearly as big as Ryan Kalkbrenner. Calkbrinner
playing a lot better the last couple of games and
he had in Summer League and what he had in
the first couple of preseason games. So nice work there
(32:33):
from Kawkbriner. Mussa Diabate, all he does is astonish me.
That is a dramatic word. I mean every bit of it.
He has been fantastic. I love this man so much.
Warning you jersey don't I'll get one. I don't wear
jerseys like that. I'll get a Musa shirt something like that,
because he's been amazing. Charles Lee loves him more than
(32:54):
I do. When Musa Diabate locks up Duce McBride out
there on the perimeter at the end of the half
in that Knicks game, what does Charles Lee do? Goes
out there and hugs him before they go to the
locker room because he loved that defensive possession so much.
If Charles Lee is giving him that kind of praise,
Musa is starting to hit a little bit more of
his free throws. That's a nice sign. He's got that
push shot going for him as well. To get it
(33:15):
over the trees that he's playing against down low. I
think Musa is going to end up playing more minutes
than Ryan Kaalkbrenner all throughout the season. I don't know
if that means he's going to get more starts. I
think Kawkbrenner against the trees probably will get that starting spot.
But because I think Mussa Diabat is going to allow
this team to be a better basketball team when he's
on the court compared to when he's off of it.
(33:36):
I just think the effort. I think the zero percent
body fat. I think the perimeter defensive ability that he
brings to the table. I think just going all out
for loose basketballs that leads to winning. I think he'll
play more minutes, but I think they'll experiment on the
fat well. I mean, nobody has zero percent, but he has.
So when he was measured at the Combine, how they
(33:58):
give you body fat percentage was like, by far the
least fat person that was measured at the Combine. In fact,
I'll get those numbers for you because it's a hilarious statistic,
But yet it is that.
Speaker 1 (34:10):
What his shoes on off.
Speaker 2 (34:13):
I don't know, have you seen the height discrepancies that
have been coming out for the Hornets I did. It's
really weird. I don't know what's going on. It doesn't
make any sense to me. This LaMelo ball six seven stuff,
which I don't I don't even want to go there.
Speaker 1 (34:26):
I don't understand it. I'm old.
Speaker 2 (34:28):
It makes me very uncomfortable. But the six seven stuff
with LaMelo, now he's six'. Six, no we've Seen, LaMelo
we've been next to. Him he's taller than. ME i
am six six in, SHOES i am six, six and
he is taller than. Me LaMelo's six seven straight. Up
Brandon miller is taller Than LaMelo fix. Seven you can't
(34:48):
help it. Either we're doing.
Speaker 1 (34:51):
That we.
Speaker 2 (34:53):
Can't we can't even just talk about we are hip.
SHOW i don't get the hype. Stuff Colin sexton lost three,
inches he went from. Sixty it's not just it's not Just.
Speaker 3 (35:06):
Charlotte Though Caleb wilson was a guy that was measured
in at six.' ten he then comes in and apparently
Measures at carolina at.
Speaker 1 (35:13):
SIX seven i don't. Get it doesn't.
Speaker 5 (35:15):
Make, it yeah that's, A mess That's what.
Speaker 1 (35:17):
I'm saying what's?
Speaker 6 (35:18):
Going on do you have Any and i'm Feeling like
i'm pretty good at looking at a cat and knowing
how tall. He Is And caleb wilson was every bit
sixty nine. Six Ten, but wes you might, Be right
you might. Be, RIGHT yeah i don't know what's. GOING
on i guess height is just a figment of.
Speaker 1 (35:37):
Our.
Speaker 2 (35:37):
Imagination height it's. It's chaos there is no height, there
is it. Doesn't exist sounds like, a philosophy Sounds Like. Jeff,
goldblum yeah you know nature as long as you. Nine seven,
all right We're Moving. Onston walker we're done with the.
Live wire it's the walk off coming. Up Next PORTS
trade a ninety two SEVEN.
Speaker 1 (35:55):
W fnz an you challenge for me to? Walk off,
oh yeah that's a walk, off challenge.
Speaker 3 (36:14):
My friend.
Speaker 9 (36:17):
It's a, walk off the Walk Off weston walker wrapping things,
Up Here sports radio ninety two to SEVEN.
Speaker 2 (36:28):
Wfn z lots of people writing in about. The heights
it is the. Biggest scam who wrote that? In, Here
Yeah willie p's burner height in basketball is the biggest
scam in. MODERN sports i could not agree with, that
more especially with the way that things have been trending
the last couple. Of years, you know the whole height
thing with. The shoes people are calling into question whether
we should have height at the combine measured when people are,
(36:50):
in shoes which, you know might as well wear elevator
shoes when you get measured if you. Want to, either
way we don't even get the heights, RIGHT anyway i
don't it. Bothers me it just doesn't feel like it
should be, so hard and yet we make it. SO
hard i think that's why it bothers me more than
it should.
Speaker 6 (37:04):
Because back in the day it used to BE and
i guess up until, recent too they used to always
add two inches to your hide, in basketball AND then
i think there's became this this stigma against big Guys
Where kevin durant was actually seven feet but he doesn't
want to be.
Speaker 2 (37:19):
Seven Feet And, dwight howard because he, played center we
always called him basically. SIX' eleven i don't know if
you've ever Stood Next. To dwight howard he's not. All
that Tall it's something. I've talked about six nine. Dude
he is it's so WEIRD because when i, first met
him when he Came, HERE to charlotte i just always
envisioned him as being this brute, of a Giant and
(37:40):
then i'm standing next to him and there's not that big,
of a difference huge. Difference, IN physique yeah i was,
about to say you felt like you could.
Speaker 1 (37:46):
Dunk on, it.
Speaker 2 (37:49):
You know maybe, in my, YOUNGER scrappier days i could
get a. Rebound against him i'm not a. Dunk, ON
him no i would get destroyed and put. Into the ground,
BUT maybe nah i wouldn't Get About. Against white HOWARD what?
Am i doing but that's what made it so wild
is that he was dunking on dudes that were much
taller than him and man handling guys despite being four
(38:09):
inches shorter than your average starting center. In the league, It's,
just anyways lamello he's a legit really. Tall Point guard
brandon miller is a legit really tall. Two slash three.
It's it's weird we don't know who's what height ANYMORE,
in the nba and it's.
Speaker 1 (38:24):
A real problem. I plan on i'm. Excited. For it
tomorrow we'll Have plenty more hornets. Coverage.
