Speaker 1 (00:00):
And Jim Zochie, the voice of the Pirates, now joins
us on the guest line. He can dabble a little
in Panthers conversation as well. He's a Hall of Famer
after all. Jim, thank you so much for the time.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Man.
Speaker 1 (00:10):
How are you doing.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
I'm doing good. Walker.
Speaker 1 (00:13):
How are you doing, I'm doing well. Jim, thanks again
for the time. Really appreciate it. We were just going
over some of the schedule for ECU, and I guess,
just looking over the schedule today during prep and during
going over it over the show, the first half pretty
hard of a pretty difficult part of the schedule for ECU.
I know they're ninety eighth and strength to schedule according
(00:34):
to ESPN, But when you take a look of all
of the team, of all the teams that they have
to play coming into this season, what are your thoughts
on just how they stack up against this level of competition.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
Now, I think it's a very challenging schedule, and i'd
look at you know, you start first of all with
going to a Power four school on the road at
NC State, and you know it's an away game obviously
against the team that you beat in a bowl game.
So they're going to be fired up and Dave Dorms
are using young guy to kick their ass terminology, and
then you've got Coastal Carolina, which is another road game,
(01:06):
and then you got nationally ranked BYU from the coaches
pulled number twenty three. And then when you step in
the conference play the first two games you have our
army at Tulane and then later on you get Memphis
and of others. So I think it's a really challenging schedule.
I think eased to use as far as their team
themselves self, scouting them is going to be every bit
as good as the way they finished out the second
half of last year. But I definitely do think in
(01:28):
terms of this year from last year, it's a more
challenging schedule.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
Jim, there are people questioning retaining Blake Harroll as the
head coach and removing the interim title. He had a
great run after taking over for Mike Houston, But why
do you think ECU chose ultimately to stick with Blake
as their head coach.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
And it's interesting, so you were here really earned it
because at first, you know, there was just a lot
of conversation about who are these candidates elsewhere that they're
looking at while Blake was doing the interim thing. And
then they win a game, in a second game, in
a third game and they go on a run and
he ends up going five and one overall gets the
job right there there before the last game of the
regular season. So he earned it. And I think, you know,
Blake's been there for a couple of years previously as
(02:06):
the defensive coordinator. He understands ECU. I think there's something
and it can work in a lot of different ways
as far as you know, that level of school goes
after getting the way to go about it, and some
will bring in, you know, big name former head coaches.
Some will bring in, you know, some big name coordinator
from a power for school. I think Blake understands what
it takes to win at ECU and the kind of
(02:28):
players that are you know, going to fit what they
want to do there. And by keeping Blake, the best
part was the Cott newity. You've got to keep John
David Baker as offensive coordinator. I don't think he would
have stayed. You keep your quarterback Kton auser think he
might have very well moved on with another coaching change there.
So they actually bring back a lot of things intact
that are beyond the fact that he got the head
coaching job. That gives a lot more cohesive this to
(02:49):
what they're doing this year.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
Yeah, Jim, we were talking about this at Panthers Brown's
joint practice. John David Baker the offensive coordinator with ECU.
If they finish where they finished last year offensively doing
the same thing here in twenty twenty five, maybe John
David Baker is gone. Like it looks like he's the
real deal. What are your thoughts on ECU's OC heading
into twenty twenty five.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
Yeah, those who don't know, he came from Ole Miss
where he was a co coordinator with Playing Kiffin down there.
This was the first time he had a full time
play calling responsibility last year, and within that he has
a head coaching change. The guy that hires him ends
up not finishing the year with him, with Mike Houston
getting the parted about about halfway through the season with
the past halfway four of the season last year, and
(03:32):
so yeah, I love the future. He's a young guy.
He's a guy that understands today's college football, knows how
to bring in recruiting wise, personnel wise, what they need
to accomplish, not just the run game, but the past
game as well. So I think he is a guy
who's got a bright future. And every year that eastes
and keep him is going to be a bonus because
he certainly has got that because of his age and
(03:53):
his pedigree, and he's been some pretty big programs beyond
Ole Miss other he's been at southern towns from other places.
I think John David Baker's got a very bright coaching future.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
Radio legend Hall of Famer. Jim Zochi joining us here
on Wesson Walker, Voice of the Pirates, helping us finish
out ECU team week. Let's focus on the quarterback here.
Once Kayden Hauser took over at that starting spot, Jim,
that's when this offense really started to take off. Less
interception still some with Hawser, but certainly less than what
Garcia had at the beginning of last year. There are
some concerns about Hawser taking advantage of what was a
(04:25):
really easy schedule the second half of last year. Where
are you on how Hawser might be the real deal?
How should we evaluate what he did last season?
Speaker 2 (04:34):
I think, you know, he just came in and he
is a guy that is a smart football player, first
of all. So the number one thing you want me
to put that quarterback in there is a guy that
knows what he's doing. If you'll know how to run
the offense. If you don't understand that, we're going to
credit to him because he was watching Jake Garcia play
the first half of last season. So for him to
say that, you know, involved, and to be able to
come in and then run it pretty flawlessly the rest
(04:56):
of the way says a lot about him as far
as the a mental acumen part of it. But then
just the arm talent is obvious when he's out there.
I mean, he really is quick and decisive with his throats.
He's got a strong arm, and he's a surprisingly good runner.
We got to see that kind of as the year
war on during his half of the year that he played,
that he could take off and he can run when needed.
He had some twenty thirty yard runs late in the season,
(05:18):
so really kind of brings it all. He's got good size,
came from Michigan State, so I think it's only gonna
be better now because now he's got the whole spring
football off season, same offensive forty eight er and when
you hear John David Baker talking earlier this week, you
know the fact that he's miles ahead of where he
was last year when he was a new player in
that system and John David Baker was new, they could
just pick up. It's almost like Bryce and Dave Canalis
(05:39):
and everybody this year brand Indzick like they can kind
of take it to the next level now because they've
got that time spent together already.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
Jim, last thing on ECU before we talk a little
bit about the Panthers their game tonight against the Browns.
What's something you feel like college football fans should know
about this Pirates program maybe not talked about enough heading
into this year.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
They got a really good receiver class. They had a
really good one last year, and some graduated out and
some transferred out. With the two Smiths, Janick Smith and
Anthony Smith. Anthony Smith former ANCTI State player, they were
both big time receivers as far as yards per catch
last year and Yannick was a freshman last year and
they did well again with there, and I helped money
to hang on the Yanick Smith. A lot of people
(06:16):
wanted them, and then they bring in to Chris Peedaway
will be in the slot. He comes in from Oklahoma
to give him three really big time receivers there. But
you can go through position back position and find good
things to like about him. But again, a talented running
back room that's deep. So I won't get into the
week about that, because they did have obviously Raj Harris
was a special player last year. But they've got three
guys that can really run it there. And the secondary's
(06:38):
almost completely new, but it's talented. And they bring back
Kegan wilk who was with them previously back from Houston.
Jamar Lee Riddle for those who remember Simone Rebel in
that secondary last year at the torn acl still went
third round of Dallas. I think I'm Barley Riddle's probably
the next big star that comes out of that secondary
for ECU.
Speaker 1 (06:53):
Jim Zochi, Voice of the Pirates, also a long time
commentator on Carolina Panthers football, joining us today to talk
about both West and Walker Sports Radio ninety two to
seven WFNZ. Jim, as we switch gears, we take a
look at the Panthers Browns first preseason game tonight. What
are you watching out for most on Carolina side?
Speaker 2 (07:12):
You start with the starters that'll play a series or
two obviously, so to me, I think it'll be interesting.
And obviously he may or may not even get him
ball thrown his way. But seeing kind of Roald McMillan
in this setting and what he's going to be like
at this stage of his development. He just seems to
have when you look at the physicality of what he brings,
all the tools. So we'll see he's added, to his
own admission, some ups and downs during camp as far
(07:34):
as catching the ball, you know, running the rocks the
right way. So just seeing that on the field in
the game setting will be good out there and be
interesting to see that Andy Dalton plays. I say that
from the standpoint of coaches are very high on We
know Bryce is not going to play long if they
go earlier to Jack Plumber, if they go to Andy Dalton.
Andy Dalton gives him a good look at all the
players around him. So when you put him out there
with all the receivers you're trying to evaluate and Jimmy
(07:56):
Horne and some of these other ones, even a Brice
and Tremaine, you want a quarterback that's really going to be,
you know, a fifteen year veteran a couple of times
a Pro Bowl player out there running the offense. We'll
give you your best look at the guys that are
catching the ball and doing other things in offense, because,
as we know, in the second half of some of
these preseason games, you really get deep in the weeds
of third sometimes spurts spring players. That's a little bit
more difficult to evaluate. So offensively, I think that'll be cool,
(08:19):
and then I think defensively obviously again to go back
to the draft picks and see what Nick Gorton can
bring and Princely Amanu and Miellen, what will they bring.
As far as Kim playing time, We'll see I think
some decent reps as far as time wise, out of
them tonight and see what they bring. How far along
they're in their development of they're getting no passport still
in this year.
Speaker 1 (08:36):
Jim, do you like the idea of the starters only
playing eight to twelve snaps in this preseason game.
Speaker 2 (08:42):
Yeah, I think it's a good idea to get them
out there and go through the whole process of getting
ready for a game and going out there. I mean,
truly what they're looking for as far as like the
biggest thing is just running the operations of offense and
defense and working on their communications in a game setting,
all that kind of stuff. It sounds mundane and boring,
but all those things timing wise, chemistry being comfortable. Every
year is a new collection of players, so that matters.
(09:04):
And whether it's the Browns or the Eagles or whoever
you're playing out there, it's really working on your own
things as far as some base stuff out there and
just how tempo, breaking the huddle quickly, getting the line
of scrimmage, I mean, all that stuff that you do
in practice. It's a different feel. And then we still
talk to Dan Morgan this week. I ask him, is
it's still an old school thing as far as evaluating
that fifty three where if guys play better tonight then
(09:27):
maybe they show in practice or vice versa. You weigh
that more heavily. He said, yeah, how you play in
a game, even a pre season game, has more weight
to it. So as much as they talk about, you know,
practice and these things, they all matter, no doubt as
far as waiting it and how much an impact it has.
You know, how you play on the field under the
lights in a game setting will really have a lot
(09:47):
to stay with. Who's going to make the final fifty
three on this team?
Speaker 1 (09:49):
Hi, Jim, I don't want to put you on the spot,
but I do want the answer to this question, so
I'm going to do it anyway. You've been covering the
Panthers for a long time, going through all of the
preseason games that you've been a part of, that you've covered.
Is there a favorite preseason moment that comes to mind?
We can go back as far as you want to.
We can go back to last year if you want.
Is there a preseason moment that sticks out in Jim
(10:11):
Zochie's mind more than others.
Speaker 2 (10:13):
They used to give, uh, you know those game balls
with the white panels, and they like, yeah, you know,
Panthers this Browns. It was a Browns game, and it
was John Fox's first preseason He took over from George Seaford,
and they had lost you know, George Seffert famously or
infamously that last year. They won the first game and
lost out the next fifteen after that, and then under
John Fox they lost the first couple of preseason games.
(10:34):
After that. They beat the Browns in a preseason game,
and that's actually one of the three game balls I
have for just being by. Gave one to everybody on
the on the trip, no matter what your role was.
So for doing the game, we all got him, even
though we didn't play a look at football obviously that night,
but it's like one of those moments that he celebrated
a preseason win just to set that important of winning
a game somewhere. So imagine that now, getting game balls
(10:56):
from the entire Ross Ruck. I'm sure Jerry Richard would
love to have it, you know, over the dollars for
all those game Bowls for everybody for winning a preseason game.
But you know what, it began a nice little run
for the Panthers that first year for John Fox, and
obviously year two was the year where it really took
off and to go to a Super Bowl.
Speaker 1 (11:10):
Look, we all celebrated a Summer League title for the Hornets.
I view it. I view it very similarly. Yeah, and
you didn't even have to pay You didn't have to
pay fifty bucks for this one. Do you still have
the football, Jim?
Speaker 2 (11:21):
You know, I've got two of the three. I gave
that one to my dad because I grew up in Cleveland,
So I gave that dad I have the other two,
so he's got it, so it's still in the family.
But yeah, you want us to really celebrate those moments,
especially when you I think at that played lost somethink
eighteen games in a row or something like that, counting
in the preseason. So it was to take it where you.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
Can get it at that point, one hundred percent, especially
at that moment in time. Jim Zochi the legend, joining
us here on Weston Walker Sports Rady ninety two to
seven WFNZ. Listen to him on ECU broadcast Carolina Panthers broadcast.
He does it all. He's a renaissance man. Jim, thank
you so much for the time man, appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (11:55):
You got it. Thanks Walker
