Speaker 1 (00:00):
Who better to talk about it than somebody that was
there partying up in Chapel Hill at least before the game.
Joe Obvious from The Obvious and Jillie Oh Podcast. Subscribe
to their YouTube channel. That's great stuff. They're always putting
out some awesome content. Joe, Welcome to the show. We
appreciate the time. Once again, my man, I saw that
you're partying up in Chapel Hill. As I just mentioned,
(00:20):
what are the chances you make the track down here
to Charlotte and tailgate with us?
Speaker 2 (00:24):
I'm sorry, I thought you guys wanted me on to
talk about the Carolina Hurricanes. Finally putting Sick with two
c's Stormy on a Jersey.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
Oh, haven't gotten good reviews down here, But is that
just a Charlotte doesn't arky thing?
Speaker 2 (00:39):
You know what? Just sounds to me like some of
y'all don't appreciate sick Ties because the last time I
checked six guys to see anyway, I was Yes, I
did go. I was in Chapel Hill on Monday. I
didn't want to go to the game because I have
opinions on what it's like to watch ball in a
(01:00):
press box versus what it's like watching it on TV.
What's better, what's not. But I did want to see
what the environment was like. I've been going to games
in Chapel Hill up and going to Keenan since nineteen
ninety seven. That was Mac Brown one point zero and
I remember at the time that being the height of
Carolina football. You'll have to remember this is so old.
(01:24):
I was eighteen, and the way they decided things was
something called the Bowl Alliance, not the BCS, the Bowl
Alliance and Florida State came to town, Game day was there,
and that was what I thought was the height of
UNC football at that time in terms of buzz, right,
I don't even think Butch Davis got that level of
buzz when he took over as coach at UNC. And
(01:48):
you know, much like in nineteen ninety seven, that night
at Keenan, Florida State went out there and suffocated them
and that was the end of that Mac Brown and
Mac Brown ended up saying, you know what, this is
kind of a basketball school. So I got the software
from Texas. Can't say no to that, and the rest
is history. Right. I would say that Monday, heading into
(02:11):
the game was of the same caliber hype that I
witnessed back in nineteen ninety seven at Keenan, And much
like nineteen ninety seven, by the end of the night,
people were depressed and we're kind of having the same conversation.
I was that he's not here. I had a couple
of blue cuffs. I saw people that I haven't seen
in a long time hanging out. It was a court
(02:31):
you could not have asked for a better day in
Chapel Hill. I ran into unc athletic director Bubba Cunningham
and I commended him. I said, hey, man, say what
you want about Bill Belichick, if this is going to
work or is it not? But this looks like an
actual like this has a buzz to it. This looks
like what football should look like in Chapel Hill, or
at least the promise of football in Chapel Hill. Which
(02:53):
again I've been doing this for thirty years and we've
been talking about that ever since, right, But you know,
a lot of the things that nobody really wanted to
address this offseason and the hiring of it was does
Bill understand college football? Did he hire the right people,
did they understand the portal? Is there a proper talent evaluation?
And while it wasn't a bold proclamation to say TCU
(03:14):
was going to win the game, I don't think anybody
could expect that on Monday night. How it unraveled like
it did on Monday night. And yeah, I guess they'll
be seeing Bill here shortly when they go to an
ESPN Plus game against Charlotte. And that's where the real
work begins for Bill Belichick. You know, teams get embarrassed
all the time. How do you respond to that? How
(03:35):
does he respond to that? And it starts on Saturday
against Charlotte.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
No, I will act a fool if my alma mater
pulls up Beat's North Cape, I will act an absolute fool.
I'm just letting you know, as you should.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
But I mean, if that, if that, if that happens,
then I guess we can say. We can't say. I
guess Bill Belichick never really actually showed up to coach
in Chapel Hill, now, did we?
Speaker 1 (03:58):
If that happens, you're you're not wrong. And so this
is my next question, Joe, after watching everything that took
place Monday night the way that it did, how should
we adjust our outlook on North Carolina football under Bill Belichick?
Speaker 2 (04:10):
I mean it depends on who you. Well, okay, there's.
Speaker 1 (04:15):
Going to say.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
You guys are on radio, you guys have heart outs.
So I mean I could spend an hour on this.
Here's the thing. There are layers to the expectations. You've
got the Pat McAfee. I have to watch how I
say this. You got Pat McAfee completely debasing himself and
showing you what he is. He's just there's a mouthpiece
(04:37):
to hang out with his buddy coaches and not give
you any sort of objective conversation. Right. The fact that
he went on the game day set and said, well
I got to pick my friend. I'm like, dude, get
the hell out of here.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
They both said that, Yeah, I see.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
That stuff, and I just think to myself, who's this for? Man, Like, okay, cool, Pat,
your buddies with everybody, but like, give me some actual
freaking analysis, dude, and that I cannot stand that stuff.
And that's where the top layer is. There were so
many people who just assign genius to Bill Belichick, who
doesn't have a winning record when his quarterback isn't named
Tom Brady, and there aren't actual valid critical conversations about
(05:14):
his talent evaluation even at the end of his run
with Tom Brady. And of course what we have post
Tom Brady where they missed and they missed and they missed.
I don't have to set in front of me, but
you go look at his draft classes post Tom Brady.
How many of those guys are actually on the roster
right now with the Patriots. Okay, so that's issue number one.
You also have a long history of NFL coaches perfectly
(05:36):
find coaches coming down to the college level and realizing
it's a completely different beast man with different priorities and
different talent evaluation and how you motivate these kids. So
Bill Belichick's not the first and he ain't the last
to deal with this kind of stuff. But again, we
just assigned genius to Bill Belichick, and I don't understand
why when it comes to that. And I'm not saying
he's a fraud of a coach. I'm simply saying it
(05:59):
was a perfect combination of quarterback and coach coming together
for one unique moment. It's not easily replicated, man, So
you just can't. And this is another thing. We're also
finding out why he's not a coach in the NFL
because everything is about Bill. Everything is about his boys.
The fact that Mike Lombardi's the general manager of this team. Again,
(06:20):
these are red flags that nobody really wanted to dress
for reasons. I'm still at a loss. And the one
thing I'll say about Dion Sanders versus Bill Belichick, Deon
Sanders actually spent time in college and brought some dudes
with him. Okay, he brought Schador Sanders who won a Heisman.
He had Travis Hunter, who I would have loved the
(06:40):
Panthers to have picked up had things gone a little
bit differently with the draft. They don't have that kind
of stuff in Chapel Hill. And when you don't have
the dudes, I don't care how good of a coach
you are. College football is based on the Jimmy's and
the Joe's. Man, it's a cliche for a reason. And
what you saw on Monday night was a hell of
a lot more work that needs to be done in
terms of talent roster acquisition. And that gets the next question, well,
(07:04):
how long do you expect Bill Belichick to be doing this?
So all these things came back to the front on
Monday night in a disaster as fans were leaving the
building in the third quarter and you're wondering yourself, you know,
when is when is Carolina actually going to take this
football thing? Seriously? You could have had you could have
had summer all at Tuwayne. Instead, you wanted to do this.
Speaker 3 (07:24):
Joe Jillio joins us on a body Works Plus guest hotline.
You can follow him at Jillio Underscore Oo.
Speaker 2 (07:33):
He's the one, He's the one with He's the one
with hair. Joe.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
So, what was the most shocking part of everything to
you as far as how the game turned out?
Speaker 2 (07:42):
I would say the most shocking part is just how
Bill there. Bill always looks miserable, but there was definitely
a level of like you could kind of process a
what am I doing here? Right? And I don't know,
one of these days maybe he'll he'll be truthful with
it again. Part of the reason why I wanted to
go on Monday wasn't necessarily for the actual game, but
(08:02):
just kind of take everything in and at UNC. For
those who have not gone to a game at U
and C, they do this thing called an old well walk.
A lot of schools do this kind of stuff where
they walk through campus and the players are on the
way to the facility, and you know, it's it's it's
all vibes, man Bill. I think as I watched him
walk by, I could almost tell how much longer do
(08:23):
I have to do this crap? Like, how much longer
do I have to walk? Why am I doing this?
He's an he's a professional coach. I'm here to coach football.
All the other stuff that you need to do as
a college coach was just not there. And I don't
know how the team feeds off that. You know, one
thing that Joe Gillio, my co host, did say is
that we can make fun of Dabble all day, but
(08:43):
Dabo's running down that field and I get that people
want to make fun of that. But you obviously can
tell that the team feeds off of that kind of stuff, right.
You know, Dave dorm might not be the most sparkling
personality with the media, but I know he's he's guys
fired up because he's out here drinking from red Solo cups,
smoking cigars and all that kind of stuff after big wins,
you know, in the locker room saying things about U
and C about you know, they haven't beaten us. You
(09:05):
know those pieces are blank. They haven't beaten us in
X amount of days. Those are the types of things
you have to do to speak to college players, and
I just don't know if that's what Bill is equipped
to do. The other thing that I'd be curious about,
it's not so much shocking, but I think it's another
one of these you get to see it in crystal
clear vision. I don't think Bill and you and c
(09:26):
are prepared for the amount of dunking that will happen
from other schools. Teased to use prolific on social media
with the hip not tode and all that stuff. Buddy,
they had some stuff in the chamber ready to go,
you know, like thirty four points on the thirty third
NFL team, or Hey, when's the Hulu episode dropping so
we can watch this back. I don't think they're ready
for that. They're not going to respond to that, and again,
(09:49):
that's not how college football works. You have to fight
that pettiness with your own pettiness. And I don't know
if Bill's equipped to do that kind of stuff. And
every single one of these college coaches is going to
relish the fact that they spent the entire off season
bragging about how they had a schematic advantage. They were
the thirty third NFL team. We're gonna get you ready
(10:09):
for the NFL, as though all these other college programs
don't do the exact same thing. You can't come in
acting like, oh, we are bringing to you like you
should be lucky that I'm even in your world, and
that world is telling you, buddy, we've been here before
you and we're gonna be here after you, So enjoy
this ass kicking.
Speaker 3 (10:26):
That's Joe Ovious, Folks, John us on a body Works
Plus guest hotline. You can follow him at Joe Ovius
and Joe What are you? What are your thoughts on
his coaching staff, because you've been talking about that so
many first year guys, guys that haven't been in the
sport for a while coaching. Then you have his children
on there. Do you feel like that at the end
of this season, depending on how it goes, that's something
(10:46):
he's going to have to make a lot of changes to.
Speaker 2 (10:49):
I doubt it. I mean you don't. You didn't cut
him that check to tell him what to do. You
gave him that check to just have a blank check.
As it relates to hiring who you want to hire.
I mean Andrew and David Hale ESPN in your backyard
wrote an interesting article about how they fired everybody and
then realized, oh, wait a minute, who's going to book
the travel who? You know? How does this recruiting process
(11:10):
work right? It's the hubris of it all. So I
don't think that hubris is going to go away. You're
not changing Bill Belichick at age seventy three. Man, He's
going to double down on his guys, his people. And
I think you're seeing based on how the coaching staff
thing went, the fact that Michae Lombardi's the general manager.
I know I keep parping on that, but there's a
reason why NFL teams looked at this and said, we
don't want this anymore. That's not the NFL anymore, and
(11:36):
let it be somebody else's problem, which is now North
Carolina's problem. The curiosity that I have going forward isn't
necessarily about what they do with the staff. It's how
does UNC recover from this after this experiment is over?
Can you go to an actual college football coach that
has designs I'm winning, like real designs on winning a
(11:58):
national championship and convince them no, I don't know for real,
now we're serious about this or are they going to
look at it as another side show, whether you have
all these politics that result in guys like Bill Belichick
getting hired in the first place.
Speaker 1 (12:10):
Joe OVI is joining us here on Wesson Walker from
the Ovious and Julio Podcast. One more question for you, Joe,
I just want to know what your thoughts are on
seeing Jordan Hudson on the sideline, Like, legitimately, what should
we make of this? Is this just Twitter content for
college football accounts to continue to dunk on the North
Carolina football program? Or do you see him seemingly isolated
(12:30):
on the sideline, we see him talking to Jordan Hudson
still and you see, oh no, there's actually something going
on here, There's something legitimate we should take away.
Speaker 2 (12:40):
I would say that only seeing Jordan Hudson continues. The
Jordan Hudson element gets back to what I was saying
about PCU and how they approach the social media game
and making fun of Bill Belichick. You do this long enough,
eventually you'll go from being the go to being a punchline.
(13:01):
And I think the Jordan Hudson thing has just essentially
settled into it's part of a punchline. I'm sure many
of your audience has seen an image shared of Jordan
Hudson behind Bill Belichick on the sideline during the pregame
and the caption reads, can I borrow twenty dollars for concessions?
You've seen that, right?
Speaker 1 (13:22):
Actually, I'll be honest, I've only seen the video a
million times. I have not seen that joke. I got
to tell you, I would have liked it had I
seen it.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
Oh, that was well done, like chef's kiss on that joke. Okay,
that's been making the rounds around here, right, And that's
what it is. It's a punchline. So that's her role
now with Bill Belichick and you and C. She is
part of the punchline. As we've seen, one of the
greatest to do. It become this this punchline at U
and C just after one week and I know you're
(13:50):
up against it, but I want to make this very
very clear point. Dion was never a punchline. And the
reason why Dan's never a punchline is because you don't
want to come at Dion. Dion will look get in
the camera and call out Virginia Football over tampering. Think
about that, Virginia Football is getting called out by Dion.
(14:10):
He'll come at you, he will spar with reporters. You
are not about to make that man a punchline. And
whether he's gonna say it in the media or he's
gonna he's gonna do it on the football field, you're
gonna respect Dion. At the end of the day. Bill
is never going to give himself an opportunity to make
you respect him because he's a miserable personality in front
of a microphone. Miserable. There's nothing compelling about Bill Belichick
(14:34):
as a television product, and Dion is electric. He is
a star. He is one of one. Bill, hey man,
you just another coach who had an awesome quarterback at
this point. And that's that's really really hard for guys
in his position to handle.
Speaker 1 (14:50):
It's kind of a thing, right, Bill Belichick told us,
it's kind of his thing. It is the guest that
is most cognizant of the clock and yet blasts through
it anyway. It is Joe Ovious here on our guest
line Wes and Walker Sports rating ninety two seven WFNZ.
Make sure you follow him on Twitter at Joe Ovious
and subscribe to the Ovious Angulio podcast. Joe will appreciate it. Man,
(15:11):
thanks again for the time.
Speaker 2 (15:13):
Yeah, I don't have to deal with the program director
five blow delay.
Speaker 1 (15:15):
No you don't. It's okay, all right, appreciate that. Yeah, really,
thank you very much
