Speaker 1 (00:00):
Time now for some sound with flounds in.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
The West and the West Live wise, all right, and
we go back to a recent edition of the cart
Talk with JJ Janssen where Roman.
Speaker 3 (00:18):
Harper was on with him. Of course, they got to
talking about the Super Bowl and everything that surrounds that game,
and he was asked specifically about a coaching staff decision
that they made before the game, and Roman not too
happy with the decision that was made just the week
(00:39):
of the game before Super Bowl fifty.
Speaker 4 (00:42):
I didn't like how we handled the week leading up
to it in San Jose. I hate it where we stayed.
There was nothing to do, yeah, and curfew the whole time,
And I don't like that either.
Speaker 5 (00:51):
You should treat us the same on the road as
we are at home, Like you can't make it bigger
than what it is.
Speaker 4 (00:56):
You got to let the guys be guys. Yep.
Speaker 5 (00:58):
And so I didn't like that part of it. Also
didn't like out of nowhere. They weren't letting me play
defensively all the time. They were trying to make let
Trey Boston get in, which we hadn't done that the
whole year. And it's not even about Trey as much
as when Trey comes in, we move Kurt, and Kurt
had had nine or ten interceptions that you're literally moving everything.
So now Kurt has to learn and do a different
(01:20):
thing than what he's done all year long. And we
didn't lose the game defensively, but it was everything. Yes,
we could have been better, and sometimes when your offense
is off, the defense has to play better. We had
the ability to do all that all year, which is
what we had done. The coaches, all of a sudden
going into the Super Bowl makes this move dumbest move
I've ever seen.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
All Right, So what do you think about this criticism
from Roman Harper about being replaced during the Super Bowl
by Trey Boston at a certain times?
Speaker 6 (01:48):
Yeah, I mean, I know guys would be frustrated playing
in the Super Bowl, the biggest game that there is,
and you want to be out there and play. I mean,
you don't want to get replaced in a preseason game
unless it's just time for you to come out because
your spot on the depth chart is secure. But to
be in a Super Bowl and not be a guy
that gets to play as much as you want and
getting replaced by somebody else, yeah, I would imagine you
(02:08):
don't like that either.
Speaker 7 (02:09):
It sounds like he.
Speaker 6 (02:10):
Had a lot more gripes when he talked about what
they stayed and then not being anything to do. But
I think for a team during super Bowl week, that's
not a bad thing. You don't want too much to
do around a bunch of football players.
Speaker 1 (02:20):
Yeah, for sure, that makes sense. I will say it
wasn't necessarily the defense that lost them this game. It
was the offense for Carolina that just couldn't score because
Von Miller was an absolute animal on the outside rushing
against Mike Remmers. And that's how we now know what
Mike Remmers to be. Even despite having a decent year
for Carolina that year, Mike Remmers was you know it
(02:42):
was it was gonna be tough blocking Von Miller. They
were just that defense was put in rough situations when
the Broncos scored. Like I'm looking at that box score
now and it's you know, it's always tough to go
back to, but three recovered fumbles for the Denver Broncos
in that game. You also had the one interception of
course that camm through, Like that's just it's gonna set
the defense up for a bunch of tough looks.
Speaker 4 (03:03):
I don't put that on the defense.
Speaker 1 (03:05):
So I think Roman, clearly you get your job taken
away in some areas and you're just deciding to deploy
a different strategy that's going to frustrate you when you
lose one percent. I do think it's interesting with the
coaches acting a little bit differently with the Super Bowl
than what they did with every single other game leading
up to the big game. And that's where I don't
know how you handle it like I would think you
(03:26):
wouldn't want the moment to be too big. Also, I
can absolutely understand what Roman Harper is saying there. I
would be interested to see what other head coaches strategies are.
I would love to know what Ron Rivera's comments are
in return to hearing Roman Harper discuss some of his frustrations.
He called it among the stupidest things that he's ever seen, Right,
So I interesting stuff there. I'd like to hear what
(03:48):
other head coaches have to say getting ready for a
Super Bowl.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
You want to hear another head coach get ripped, Sure
do it. Let's go with Mike Davis. He was on
the Raw Room Podcasts resting podcast name there uh and
he was talking about Matt Rule, and he tells a
story about Matt Rule practicing Christian McCaffrey shortly after he
came back from an injury.
Speaker 8 (04:11):
You know how folks don't like Matt Rule when they
was talking about like they didn't like how he did
this and all that, such and such.
Speaker 4 (04:19):
I ain't gonna lie tell you.
Speaker 8 (04:20):
You know, when you're playing good and you're balling, you
don't realize the stupid that's going on. We was doing
stupid like like Mac got hurt, right, c Mac, Like
first day back from injury.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
All right, we're.
Speaker 8 (04:34):
Gonna do a live goal on Oh no, what okay?
Speaker 4 (04:39):
During the season, Yeah, live goal.
Speaker 7 (04:41):
On j This is yeah, during the season.
Speaker 4 (04:48):
That's insane.
Speaker 7 (04:49):
But I'm saying that it's a time live goal that's
not even being in NFL practice.
Speaker 8 (04:52):
No more own no hell, but it was kind of
it was like the only reason trying to badge on
but it's doing the season's week this light down what
you're talking about though, I didn't realize feel just say
like I ain't realize like she was doing because I
was falling, you know what I'm saying, Like I ain't care, all.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
Right, So from a football guy, Wes. What is is
he right that normally you don't practice goal line? Like,
how crazy is this of a moment from Matt rule
to do this with a running back that was just
coming off of injury.
Speaker 6 (05:26):
Yeah, especially a running back that is, you know, your
top guy there, that's tough to put him in a
very physical environment like that fresh off of injury. And
I'm sure to the veteran players on that team, as
they just told us, it didn't make a lot of
sense because you don't want to bring him back and
put him in a position to get injured again, obviously,
(05:48):
And so along with all of the other things that
people did not like about Matt Ruhle, that's certainly something
that makes players question your football acumen. Are you fit
for this job? Are you fit to be an NFL
head coach? Because it sounds absolutely asking that.
Speaker 1 (06:02):
I remember talking with Stefania Bell about this injury analyst
for ESPN. You probably know her through her fantasy football contributions,
and Stefania Bell would always discuss the Panthers usage of
Christian McCaffrey in games where he had a ninety percent
snap rate, which I always thought was way too much
for that guy, and how they would bring him back
(06:22):
a little earlier from injury than they probably should. And
Stefanya I remember talking with her even I did like
a thirty minute podcast with her or whatever when I
had her on. This was during twenty twenty one, twenty
twenty two, so right after the incident that Mike Davis
is talking about, and that's what she was hearing that
Christian McCaffrey just wouldn't ever get a break, and we
(06:43):
saw it. They played McCaffrey constantly, and what was really
frustrating is as much as I love Ron Rivera and
have the utmost respect for him and everything that he's accomplished,
I thought that he was a little misguided with how
much they used McCaffrey. And then when that rule came over,
I thought, all right, that's something I'd like to see change.
Except all they did was turn the volume up even
more on McCaffrey. Seeing the football field, they didn't want
to take them off, and so he constantly had injuries
(07:05):
in the Queen City, go to San fran Yeah, less injuries,
still some injuries, especially what we saw last year, but
they just never used them right in my opinion, or
if they used them right, they used them too much,
and you would hear people behind the scenes say, yeah,
this is weird. This is not what other teams do it.
It was more than Leveon Bell usage. It was more
(07:26):
than Todd Gurley usage over there with the Rams. McCaffrey
would not leave the field short yardage. Go get a
bigger back in there on fourth and one and see
if he can convert. Nope, gonna handle it. They're gonna
hand it to McCaffrey. It was frustrating then, yeah, and
it's frustrating now hearing stories like that when it's confirmed. Yeah,
(07:46):
we all knew it was stupid, and yet here they
were running a live goal line with McCaffrey coming back
from dage. Sounds idiotic. What else you got?
Speaker 3 (07:53):
All right, Well, first of all, we do have two
new practice squad members that have been added. Kaylin King,
defensive back from the Packers, who was a surprise cut
to many amongst the Packers media, and then Ania Smith,
a wide receiver, has also been added to the practice squad.
So I wouldn't read too much into that in terms
(08:14):
of the Hunter Renfro angle, but certainly something of note.
As Mike kay says that by his math. Now, seventeen
spots have been spoken for on the practice squad for
the Panthers.
Speaker 1 (08:26):
Okay, there you go, more people being released, and we
continue to see if the Panthers are going to bring
back Hunter Renfro. More practice squad spots keep being used up.
If you bring back Renfro, it'd probably be on the
main roster anyway, though, right I would.
Speaker 6 (08:39):
Think so, because I'm wondering with them continuing to pick
up wide receivers, I'm like, what does this mean another
guy or two might get cut because they're picking these
guys up. But I know they're putting together their practice squad.
Speaker 1 (08:49):
Right and especially with the Renfro stuff too, with Mike
kay also reporting that he hears there's competition for Renfro
when it comes to the Panthers, I think it's the
guy that performed as well as he did in training
camp with multiple players calling him unguardable, and we saw it,
especially before the hamstring injury, just routing dudes up, even
(09:10):
if it's one on one scenarios, they always favor the receiver.
Anna Renfroe had a good camp before injury, and so
I think he's gonna make an active roster somewhere with
what he's already accomplished in the league. I just hope
it's here in Carolina. I'm pulling for it to happen
as well. You want a quittor you got more sound? No,
I got one more for you guys.
Speaker 3 (09:27):
Aaron Murray talking on the Mac and Murray podcast, new
podcast that he's doing with Eric McLain and he I
don't know if he was just kissing up to his
co host, but he says that Clemson should be number
one in the country going into this year.
Speaker 9 (09:42):
I'm gonna be honest, I'm surprised Clemson is the number
one of the country because that's my number one team
in the country for all the reasons you said, Because
I think Texas has a lot of question marks at
a lot of big positions. Offensive line. You know, we
think arch is gonna be good, but how good? I
got a proving guy in Kate Clubnick, who, I'll be honest,
was not a big fan of Kate Clubnick early in
his career. Sure, he didn't love what I saw last
year versus Georgia week one, and then he just gained
(10:04):
so much confidence from that moment for the rest of
the season and played great. So like, you have an
experienced quarterback that's put up the stats, you got the receivers,
the defense is going to be legit. You're in the ACC.
Like for so many reasons, I sit back, like, why
is not everyone saying Clemson? Plus you have a head
coach who's won multiple national championships. You're going back to
(10:25):
the whole thing, like, who can win a championship?
Speaker 4 (10:27):
Dad was proven he can win championships.
Speaker 9 (10:29):
So I love Clemson.
Speaker 4 (10:31):
I'm all for Clemson.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
All right, So do you believe that, like Aaron Murray says,
the Clemson Tigers should be the number one overall team,
that you're not a team like Texas or say Penn State.
Speaker 6 (10:42):
Yeah, I mean I typically like the defendant champion come
back in as number one. But if you didn't do it,
if you want to look at the team just based
off the talent and what they've gotten, yeah, I think
Clemson is the best team. And that's not just because
they're an ACC team. As I said, this defense, you
look at every level, they are NFL guys that are there.
You look at this offense too. The only question mark
(11:02):
that they have is at the running back position, which
I think if you were to have issues, running back
is probably the easiest to solve, and so when you
want to look at talent and perceived weaknesses, Clemson has
less than a lot of the other quote unquote championship
contenders across the country.
Speaker 4 (11:19):
How dare you, sir?
Speaker 1 (11:20):
Running backs matter West and I'm tired of you disrespecting
the running back position. It is not an easy position
to solve. I think people complaining about preseason rankings and
polls is one of the most overstated issues in college football.
I can't stand it. I actually like the process that
we have where a bunch of college football minds come
together and imperfectly give you their best shot at who
(11:44):
the top twenty five teams are going to be coming
into this year. Guess what happens If your number one
ranked team coming into the year sucks. They're not going
to be in the top twenty five anymore. They're not
going to be in the top ten anymore. They're not
going to be in the College Football Playoff if they lose.
So you got it wrong. We make the rankings because
we give it our best shot to see who the
top twenty five teams are. And guess what a lot
(12:06):
of times they do a pretty damn good job. Isn't
there only one team and the preseason top ten that
usually falls out of the top twenty five by season's end.
It's a pretty decent hit rate. As much as we
like to argue about it, these things figure out themselves.
It's totally fine. What else do we want to do?
Not have preseason rankings for all these teams to come
out in football?
Speaker 6 (12:27):
What are we doing?
Speaker 3 (12:28):
It's okay, your first week matchups would mean one. There
would be certain games where you'd look at it and
be like, how good is this game?
Speaker 2 (12:35):
Really?
Speaker 1 (12:36):
Everybody get hyped for the zero ranked LSU Tigers facing
the zero ranked Clemson Tigers. Ah man, I want some
poping circumstances. Give me top one, top two, top three,
top five matchups, That's what I want. But oh no,
everything's going to be affected once we get to the
college football playoff. Like the team that lost four games
(12:56):
isn't going to that. They're going to still be ranked
number one if they d law sporty. I think people
complain about it constantly and it's always been stupid, and
we end on that for the Live Wire
