Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's all Duke's Mayo around here because we're in the south, right.
I don't want any tomato sandwiches with Hellman's mayo. No,
thank you, the Duke's Mayo classic. We are about to
get things underway around here, and what better way to
do it than getting off the bus with Charlotte head
football coach Tim Albin. That's right, this is this is
what we're doing here. I promise you, this is what
(00:22):
we're doing. It's a guy that I've been waiting to
talk to for a while, both of us here on
West and Walker. We're excited for him to be the
next head coach here at Charlotte the first time, first
time around these parts. Is Tim Albin in around here
at West and Walker. So, coach, are you doused in
mayo yet? Are you guys warming up at Bank of
America already? How are you doing?
Speaker 2 (00:43):
I'm doing just fine. I really appreciate you guys having
me on here to say a few things. But yeah,
we got We've got the mayo ready. Be the true story.
Today is my daughter's birthday and her favorite thing I
cook is brisket, and I used I use Duke's Mayo
as a binder from my brisket baby.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
Oh okay, Well, first of all, okay, happy birthday to
your daughter. Second of all, I'm pleased to hear this
because I know how y'all Midwesterners get down. I got
family in Indianapolis, I was born there. I didn't know
if you were a Hellman's guy before, but to hear
this like this was gonna be my first question legitimately,
are you a Hellman's miracle whip guy? And have you
been introduced to Duke's Mayo yet? But it sounds like
(01:25):
you have. And what better way to give us some
Duke's mayo than just lathering a juicy brisket in it? Coach,
you know ball congratulations, I appreciate that.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
That is awesome. But yeah, I'm a Duke's guy, and
you can tell by my parts size because of the
mental cheese stuff I've had for the last seven months.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
Oh my goodness, a Duke's guy's got to win this
game then, I mean, the karma is on our side.
The gods, the mayo gods, if there are such a thing,
they are on our side. It's strawll. The forty nine
ers head football coach Tim Albin joining us on Wes
and Walker Sports Radio ninety two to seven wa FNZ. Coach. Look,
when we were talking about the head coaching vacancy around here,
(02:04):
all of us in the Chandler VAULTA Studios, we all
had Tim Albin as the best replacement down here, all
of us did. And we also didn't think we'd be
able to get you down here to the Queen City.
You were in Ohio for a while, you had your
coaching staff there for quite some time. You had already won,
You've won conference championships. What does that conversation like for you?
Speaker 2 (02:25):
Like?
Speaker 1 (02:25):
What gets the ball rolling on you leaving a place
with such stability and such winning tradition that you in
large part responsible for, at least recently. What gets the
ball rolling for you to head down here.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
Yeah, I appreciate that question. It's really easy. It became
very clear to me early on the leadership team. Our chancellor,
Sharon Gabor her vision and I've shared this first part
with her. The second part I have not, and I'm
excited to tell you, but she came from Touedlo University,
(02:58):
which is in our It was in the mac and
Jason Kendall is one of my dear friends. I'd reached
out to him when when this thing, when we were
in talks, just I wanted to know, you know, I
don't care about facilities right now, Hey, I just we
need direction, vision and resources, all right, And uh, he
(03:18):
could not say enough great things about our chancellor. And
then and then then we started talking with with Director Hill,
and uh, I got a chance to come to come
to the Queen City and and get in front of
uh the vetting process and this part I have had
(03:38):
I've never shared, all right, and but I'm I want
to share it. I haven't even told Sharon. But throughout
the in the course of that interview, I'd asked the question, Uh,
we've got talking about again leadership and vision, and I said,
(03:59):
I feel the football program is the front porch to
your university, all right. And I was reading, I was
reading reading body language and if I felt like, you know,
that's tough for a chancellor. When someone says the football
is the front ports of university. That's gonna make you know,
some people may be nervous. And she was, I mean smiled,
(04:23):
and I loved it. And I've never tied and I
never told her of that, but that was a defining
moment from me. I thought, okay, we're gonna be okay,
and you know, and then then we kept we kept going,
and and here I am, but very specifically, if if
I would have, you know, sense something different, because you
need great leadership to be successful, and we certainly have it.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
So coach, you needed the right body language, and you
came here off of vibes putting football first and foremost.
Is that what I'm hearing?
Speaker 2 (04:53):
Yeah, that's the tip. That's the short version of a
cliff note.
Speaker 3 (04:56):
All right, Charlotte Football Coast, Tim I've been joins us
on the Bodyworks Plus guest hotline. You can follow him
on x at Coach Albun and coach talk about this
team and how far you guys have come from spring
to training camp to now.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
Well, I'm gonna be honest. We got eighteen transfers after
spring practice, you know, fifty six new guys, which is
the norm right now across the board, in partly group
of five schools. Hey, we're a Nastauk country baby, and
I need to take her out for a spin. See
how she handles, and you know, go around the you know,
(05:34):
go around the curves and see how she moves. You know,
we're gonna have to make some adjustments. We're not gonna
be perfect, but but we have made progress. Uh, and
we need to We need to play a game to
see where we're at. We can practice another six months
and we would not get any better. We gotta play
a game. We got twelve opportunities, and man, is how
(05:55):
excited are we to play in that great venue Bank
of America, Queens City, one hundred thousand alumni in the city,
right against the N State rival. It isn't not getting
any better than that coach.
Speaker 3 (06:07):
A lot of people thought that Grayson Loftis was going
to be the favorite to win this quarterback job, but
it ends up being Connor Harrow. How was he able
to do this? How did he earn that position?
Speaker 2 (06:17):
Again? It is down to the wire. Very tough decision, really,
all three guys. Todd Fitch did a great job on
the evaluation process. We met, you know, four or five
days ago. He went when we went back and watched
every cliff from Spring all the way through Paul Camp.
And that's where we're at with it. Grayson's ready to play.
(06:38):
They all three are capable. I said this before, wouldn't
shock me at some point in time with where we
are in college athletics today, that you see all three
at some point in time throughout the course of the year.
But we're excited for Connor. He's got great leadership skills
and I just want him to go out there and
execute the offense. Let the guys around him make some plays,
(06:58):
and we'll be fine.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
Coach, defense is always ahead of an offense when you're practicing,
But just how confident are you in this offense right now?
Speaker 2 (07:08):
Again, we're going to test drive or find out. I
think we've got some players that can make some some
plays for us explosively, and I think we're going to
be sound up front. We've got as solid group of
tied ends. Running back will be by committee. You'll probably
see up the three guys back there. I'd believe in
having a fresh one, a fresh guy that can that
(07:30):
can finish runs the right way, And I think your
football team takes on your mindset. You know, we want
to stop the run and we want to have meaningful,
meaningful rush yards in the second half. Those are two keys.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
Charlotte forty nine er head football coach Tim Albin joining
us ahead of the Duke's Mayo Classic against app State
at Bank of America Stadium tomorrow. We're excited for it.
He's joining us here on West and Walker, Coach, I
want to go back to your quarterback convents. You said
it in press availability, you just said it with Wes
there a moment ago that you would be surprised seeing
all three of these qbs throughout the course of a season.
(08:04):
I'm curious with it going down to the wire or
what your patience level is for Connor Harrold. Do you
want him to play through some of these mistakes and
be okay, not looking over his shoulder. Do you want
to apply the pressure if he makes a mistake then well, okay,
that means you might lose your job. What's your patience
level with times like this?
Speaker 2 (08:20):
Yeah? I don't. I don't want him thinking thinking anything
about what you just said. I want him thinking about
his job. And it's not going to be a short,
short hook. You know I'm a mistake because I guarantee
you we're gonna all won't make him. You don't have
you don't have this many new faces and things. Don't
you know it's not going to be you know, Betty
Roses out there and uh, but hey, it's on to
(08:42):
the next play. Don't let a mistake affect the next play.
That's our that's our that's our big thing, all right,
don't let the previous play affect the next one. You're
not you're not. No one thinks you're a failure. It's
you're in. You're in the arena for a reason. You've
earned the right and uh, you've got the backing of
your teammates, and it's the next play is you've got
(09:04):
proven mechanism right And if they do that, we'll be
just fine. Coach.
Speaker 1 (09:09):
We'll have plenty more questions for you on the game,
but I do want to catch up with you on
the off season here. You are a great evaluator of
talent based on all of the talented players that both
came into Ohio and then maybe even left for the
transfer portal, and yet all you do is you keep winning.
I'm curious what the difference is recruiting at Ohio compared
to recruiting at Charlotte. What were some of the biggest
(09:29):
differences that you've experienced in just an off season so far?
Speaker 2 (09:33):
Well, I think I mean, you take our university an
R one institution, the academic background, business engineering, all right,
so many other wonderful majors. You combine that with the
Queen City opportunities uptown for internships and connections through our football,
(10:00):
it is so exciting. And you've got five professional teams,
all right, You've got NASCAR. There's so many things to sell.
And you combine that with our breast taking campus. Man,
I mean we got we already have eighteen guys committed,
thirteen are within a tink of gas uptown. Yeah, and
(10:21):
twelve of those eighteen or mid year end rollies. So
we are off and running because there's a lot of good,
great things to sell.
Speaker 3 (10:30):
Coach, you guys have one of the best defenses in
the country last year at Ohio. What's the biggest trait
from those defenses that you wanted to establish here?
Speaker 2 (10:37):
Immediately out the run under the ball, women, explosives. I mean,
that's standard, and again that's coach speak. Everybody's going to
say that, but that's that's what we're going to be
built on. Coach.
Speaker 3 (10:52):
What challenges will app State present to you on Saturday?
Speaker 2 (10:56):
Well, again, they have a total rebuild for them as well.
You know, if we're going off of so many different films.
I mean film this this player came from this school,
and we're watching film. This player came from this school.
The Fresh Things cordator was at Texas, you know, and
they have all those the staff from the NFL experience.
So we have seen a lot of film from a
(11:18):
lot of different places. But at the end of the day,
it's going to be, hey, what do we know. Let's
focus on what we know. I don't care what the
other team knows. I care about what we know and
our fundamentals. Off the play. They're going to have some
things that are going to present problems, I am sure
on both sides. Uh, And so we got to focus
(11:39):
on us and then use the iPads the technology on
the sideline. We've got an unbelievable staff. It's going to
make u great adjustments. And uh, you know Calm.
Speaker 1 (11:49):
Breeds Calm Charlotte forty nine ers head football coach, Tim Alba.
Oh you like that, don't yet? Yeah, we'll play that.
We'll promote that. Tim Alvin, Charlotte forty nine er head
football coach joining us here on West of Walker. Just
a couple more questions, coach, you mentioned the run defense.
We're doing team week around here, so we highlight different programs.
We saved app State and the Charlotte forty nine ers
(12:11):
for last When we were talking about the defense, the
way we see it is, it looks like you guys
have an excellent back end defensive backfield, with Conley of
course being a captain. Your linebackers made a bajillion tackles
last year, whether it was at Charlotte, whether it was
at other stops. The defensive line seems like it could
go either way with some talented dudes, especially at the edge.
How do you feel like your strengths are defensively in
(12:32):
stopping the run? Where is that stopping the run going
to come from? Is it on the back end more
so making those tackles or do you believe in your
defensive line stopping it right away at the line of scrimmage?
Speaker 2 (12:43):
Well, I had this. I mean, I'm going to the
best answer I can give is going to be after
this first game, right and I'm gonna be able to
speak on more directly. But if I'm seeing it right
through screen practice and obviously through Paul Tamp, we're going
to have a rotation up the deep sub line. I
don't think we're gonna have to. I don't think we're
gonna have anybody up front and the D line that's
(13:04):
gonna have to play over forty snaps. We're gonna have
a rotation of seven or eight guys, and that right
in my my thirty seven years, that is a good,
good thing, all right. And so you take the back
end the safeties, we're five deep. I think you mentioned JQ.
I mean we've got some We've got some guys back
there safety, all right. And then I think we're here
(13:26):
a four or five deep at linebacker. So up the
middle fall. We're gonna do what we do. But I
am my glass is half full right now going into
this contest. All right.
Speaker 1 (13:39):
Final question, coach, A lot of people are wondering about
your brisket process. If you're lathering it up in dukes,
you're already off to a great start. But we've talked
a lot about brisket on these airwaves over the last
couple of years. We love food. Can you take us
through how to cook the perfect brisket?
Speaker 2 (13:54):
Well? I have a tragger, all right, but I've also
got I've got a real smoker. I mean you know,
I mean a real pick cut the wood I made
it myself when I was in high school. Still have
it all right. So yeah, so it's a game weekend,
so I'm just using the trigger. I'm just using trigger.
But I got a little marinate for about twenty four
hours in the fridge. I lather it up, put my
(14:15):
favorite seasoning salt, and pepper's just fine. I smoke her
for twelve wrap her in books paper with a little
bit of a little bit of French onion dip our
French onion soup to keep it moist in there, and
I go another. I go another two hours, about two
fifty and I've come out. Letter said about four hours
slice through up.
Speaker 1 (14:36):
Does your Alba Maters college football coach make his own
smoker in high school?
Speaker 2 (14:42):
No?
Speaker 1 (14:43):
Okay, then you don't have as good of a college
football coach as I do. We appreciate the time, Coach
Tim Albin getting ready for the Duke's Mayo Classic against
the app State Mountaineers at Bank of America Stadium tomorrow.
We appreciate the time, coach, good luck and we'll talk
to you down around.
Speaker 2 (15:01):
I appreciate that, fellas, enjoy the game. Doe Niners
