Speaker 1 (00:00):
Trey Man joining us on Western Walker Sports Radio ninety
two to seven WFNZ.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Again.
Speaker 1 (00:05):
We're live from Curry Arena for Hornets Media Day, and
we are meandering in and out of Panthers and Hornets talk,
and this time we'll get to talk about the team
that has provided a little bit of hope because of
what they did this offseason. One move they made this
offseason was bring back a fan favorite, Trey Man. We
appreciate the time, man. How are you doing, Noah, I
appreciate you all.
Speaker 3 (00:21):
I'm doing good.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Well.
Speaker 1 (00:23):
I want to talk about this offseason for you specifically,
because it was interesting after having a great what was
it thirteen games you played last year?
Speaker 2 (00:31):
It was great.
Speaker 1 (00:32):
We were often rolling, it looked awesome, and then you
suffer the unfortunate injury and then you're not back. People
still wanted you here pretty badly. Just real quickly, What
was it like for you to have such a great
reception from the fan base like they wanted you?
Speaker 2 (00:44):
Man? I imagine that has to feel pretty good.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
Yeah, I mean it's love.
Speaker 4 (00:47):
I've seen all the comments, you know am on social media,
so I saw them showing love.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
You know.
Speaker 4 (00:52):
They was also concerned, like wanting to know, like what
was going on and stuff like that.
Speaker 3 (00:56):
So you know, it's love and it go both ways.
Speaker 4 (00:58):
I love the fans and you know, hopefully we can
give them something to be excited for this year.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
How are you? How are you feeling? Man?
Speaker 1 (01:05):
Health wise? Are you one hundred percent right now? Will
you be one hundred percent by training camp? How's the
health status of you?
Speaker 3 (01:11):
I'm one hundred and ten percent right now.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
Love it? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:14):
Good?
Speaker 1 (01:15):
Well, and last thing for it, West, you can take over, like,
how was it going through rehab this year?
Speaker 2 (01:20):
Because it was a long process. Man.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
We just talked about this with Brandon. I don't think
people understand just how difficult rehab is, especially with some
of the injuries that keep you out for an entire season.
What were those challenges for you, like going through the
adversity that you did.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
Oh, it was tough, man.
Speaker 4 (01:37):
I don't really want to get too in detail of
what was going on, but it was tough mentally and physically.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
But you know, I feel better from it.
Speaker 4 (01:46):
I've learned a lot about my body, about you know, myself,
way to take care of myself, so things going to
help in the long run.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
But it was definitely a lot.
Speaker 5 (01:53):
Yeah, Trey, I was going to ask you, what was
some of the positives though that you took away during
the time off. What were you able to see were
you able to see the game differently or what was
some of those things you were able to add?
Speaker 4 (02:03):
Yeah, I was definitely able to watch games and not
look for myself. So you know, when you're doing that,
you can see more of the games, see more of
your team, and it helped that way. And then just
being a pro, you know, I would rather this happened
now than like, you know, later on where I'm you
know older, you know, back end of my career. So
I felt I'm young still, and you know, it was
(02:25):
easy for me to you know, get back healthy.
Speaker 5 (02:28):
Was one of the things that you really look forward
to is the fact that, man, you've come here and
it's just been like just the freedom that you've gotten
coming to Charlotte. Man, you were able to unlock Trey
Man the player. Yeah, No, Trey Man the player and
Trey Man a person. Really just like from the day
I came in and then we got the new coaching
staff and new front office and things like that, they
(02:49):
just allowed me.
Speaker 3 (02:50):
To be me.
Speaker 4 (02:50):
I came in you know, with my swagger and they
didn't say nothing. They actually it was a day where
I didn't have like something on a coach was like yo,
where Trey Man. You know, they feel good to have that.
People accept you for who you are and then you
know push you to be that and you know, let
you do it. So it feels super good.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
Speaking of having that on. I see you a lot
of times man with the attire. It takes me back
to the college day.
Speaker 5 (03:14):
Okay, a lot of stuff that I was band stuff
oversize then them shorts, the jerseys all that what brought
that on from a young cat like yourself to be
so inspired by that.
Speaker 4 (03:25):
I just always like older players like MJ my favorite,
you know AI second, and it started with my dad
then with my dad favorite players, so like I wasn't
able to watch them, but growing up, that's all I
watched on YouTube was AI and MJ. And then I
would just say, like I wanted to be different in
my way, Like I know people done it before in
(03:47):
the past, like two thousands whatever, but I feel like
the game now is going to shorter shorts, tighter jerseys,
and you know, I just didn't feel comfortable in that.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
So I was.
Speaker 4 (03:56):
I was doing it in OKC, but I just wasn't playing,
so nobody saw. And then when I got here, it
was just like, go be Trey Man. And you know,
it really came from from just doing that. And I
saw Tracy McGrady. I saw a picture of him on Instagram.
I was like, damn, it's kind of dope. So I
was like, I want to try. I talked to my friend.
It was like, no, I don't think you should do it.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
I just.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
Was he talking about the suit because the T Max
suit I would advise against as well. It suit, yeah,
because everything else is phenomenal. I don't know about the
T Max suit though, where like he's swimming at this.
Speaker 5 (04:28):
Going to the phone and show you ten to twelve
pictures from college and you'd.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
Be like, yep, that's that's what I like.
Speaker 5 (04:33):
Dow Rag, like they have the two colored ones, the
jabos all yeah.
Speaker 6 (04:37):
I mean, just not to belabor the point, man, but
like everybody accepted that, like there wasn't anything against Trey
Man doing what he was doing wearing that stuff. Everybody
didn't like it, they loved it, which I have to imagine,
like it was cool for us, just as Hornets fans. Yeah,
I want to ask you about the comparisons, because I
know it's a fine line of paying homage to some
of those favorite players of your past, but also being
(05:00):
tray Man is specifically.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
So do you welcome the tray I nicknames? Do you
welcome some of the Allen iverson comparisons? Do you like
where it is now or do you kind of want
to get away from it?
Speaker 4 (05:10):
I do want to make it like I'm cool with it.
It's great to be able to be like on the
same like, even though I don't think our game is
the same, but people to mention me with Ai, even
though they're not saying we play it like or nothing
like that, just to be in the same sentence.
Speaker 3 (05:22):
It's cool because he's a legend.
Speaker 4 (05:24):
But I want to make it clear like it's not
trying to be AI, like it came from Tracy McGrady,
Like I said, the picture that I did came from
Tracy McGrady. And then you know, I've been wearing the
arm band since my rookie year. The headband I didn't
have the braids, but once I got the braids, you know,
you got to wear the headband with the braids. And like,
(05:45):
you know, I can see if I went the arm
like I know Ai, I know what he wore, but
it is not that.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
So we need to back off maybe a tiny bet.
Speaker 3 (05:53):
It's cool, Like it's cool for real.
Speaker 5 (05:55):
I was gonna ask you how hard is some of
that stuff to find? Because I've seen with the fool
Booth jerseys and stuff like that, like that stuff isn't
easy to find anymore. I say, I found most of
my stuff in New York. New York has like some
some spots that has the older stuff. And when we
go play preseason, that's why I'm gonna stop by, you know,
re up on some stuff, but the vintage stores around here.
(06:15):
Then we went on away games like all adventure stores
for real?
Speaker 1 (06:18):
What what what does your cart look like on mitchellin
Nest right now?
Speaker 2 (06:21):
What does your cart? What does your online cart look like?
Speaker 1 (06:24):
For some of those New York shops you go to, Like, okay,
we're going to New York at this moment in time,
let me go ahead and stock up.
Speaker 4 (06:29):
Yeah, no, michelin ness, where was it Boston maybe or Philly, Philly,
Philly in Philly. Yeah, it wasn't online, but I went
there and I bought a couple of jerseys.
Speaker 5 (06:41):
What's your favorite piece of of I guess clothing that
you have from that? Like, what did you like the most?
Was it kind of like the football jersey? Or was
it the jeebou jeans? Or like, what is you like
the most?
Speaker 3 (06:52):
The Jabo jeans? For sure?
Speaker 4 (06:53):
You know that that was something I saw my dad wearing,
and like, back then, I didn't think it was that cool,
but you know now it's my dad was wearing those,
so it's cool that they still have them and I
can wear them.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
I like the idea of being a trendsetter but getting
out because we know history repeats itself. Trey Man is
ahead of history repeating itself, and I love to see it.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
Trey Man joining us here.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
I'm not gonna lie.
Speaker 4 (07:14):
I don't seen a whole bunch of like media days
where you know, college kids, high school kids are wearing
baggyar like uniforms. Like I understand the fashion stuff where
people been wearing the bag of your pants, but media days,
I've been seeing a lot of baggy jerseys and stuff.
Speaker 1 (07:28):
Well I was I remember Jalen Rose talked about this
right Fab five trying to find the triple XL shorts
because I was the same way in high school. Now
that was more mid two thousands for me, so that
was the thing. But these tight shorts, Yeah, John stocked
in it.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
I can't. No, it doesn't.
Speaker 5 (07:43):
It didn't feel right for you to have compressions got too.
Speaker 2 (07:46):
And we can see him with how short your shorts are.
We can see him.
Speaker 1 (07:49):
It's trade man joining us here on West and Walker.
I wanted to get back to just a little bit
of the contract negotiation because.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
Trey, we wanted you.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
We didn't know if you were going to be back,
Like it felt like there was a real shot that
you would leave this city.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
How real did that possibility.
Speaker 1 (08:02):
Get when you your agent and the Hornets are negotiating coming back.
Speaker 2 (08:06):
To the Queen City.
Speaker 4 (08:06):
Yeah, it was definitely real. You know, it's negotiation, so
like we have our opinions, you know, Jeff and them
had their opinions. But at the end of the day,
for me, it was about getting on the same page
and I.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
Feel like we did that. But it definitely was a
real shot.
Speaker 4 (08:23):
Anytime you know somebody's in that position, it's going to
be a real shot, and it's challenged, especially having a
season that I had where you know, I didn't play
the whole season and stuff like that, so it was tough.
Speaker 1 (08:32):
It looked to me from a farall. We don't have
any inside information on it, but they just signed guard
after guard after guard and you hadn't been signed yet.
They draft guards, and it's like, man, I don't know,
Like I thought that was more incentive to bring you
back just to have all these fun basketball players that
can handle the rock. But they did bring you back,
and so it did look like it was a real possibility.
(08:53):
What were your thoughts going and not to getting your thoughts,
I don't want to be like that, but I guess
my point is, what's it like sharing the core with
those guys? Like, how do you envision your role playing
alongside other dudes that also can handle the basketball and
be these spark plugs off of the bench or just
starting straight up?
Speaker 3 (09:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (09:09):
I mean, at the end of the day, I feel
like we all want to win, and the better players, like,
the more players you have, I feel like you have
a better chance of winning. So, you know, I wasn't
upset at all at anything any of the signers, any
of the you know, drafts. I actually liked it. I
came to the workouts and I felt like we made
the right picks. But nah, I'm a super I'm super
(09:30):
excited to share a court with them. You know. I
feel like we add to each other, we can make
each other better, and you know, I'm just ready to
get going.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
Yeah, because I was going to ask you about that.
Speaker 5 (09:38):
Is there any like, man, these guys are gonna maybe
cut into some of what I was doing before this,
or like you just a team guy, like whatever.
Speaker 3 (09:46):
Works, whatever, whatever works.
Speaker 4 (09:48):
I feel like it's all on God's timing, Like when
it's my time, it'll be my time. And you know
I'm heavy in that. So they're here for a reason.
I'm here for a reason, and I'm just I'm just
ready to play.
Speaker 5 (10:00):
And I was going to ask you, man about the workout,
just how excited are you with what you've seen with
everybody available and everybody playing.
Speaker 4 (10:05):
Yeah, No, it's good to have everybody, you know playing,
Like that's something that people don't really look at, but
like going into training camp healthy is like a good
thing to have. Not a lot of teams have that,
So you know, we're going into training camp healthy. We
competed for the last month and I think we look good.
We made some adjustments for the offense and things like that.
(10:26):
So super excited.
Speaker 1 (10:27):
All right, last question before we get you out of here.
Imagine you're a little familiar with Curry Arena. Your brother
plays here. He's back. I do color for Queens. Getting
to call NAS's games. A lot of fun to watch
him sky for some of these dunks counts.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
Who's the better athlete? Man? Talk to me.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
I'll give it to him, but I'm not gonna lie.
Speaker 4 (10:48):
He longer, so like he is the stuff that he does,
he don't really need a lot of athleticism Like me,
I'm six', three not the longest, arm so LIKE i
gotta really jump to do.
Speaker 3 (10:58):
Stuff So i'll give it to.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
HIM a final final question, here what's your assessment on
him as a? Player, like what what would your eval
be if you're A gm and you're going back and
forth on the contract. Negotiations what are some things that
you want him to work? On what are some things
you think he does?
Speaker 4 (11:13):
WELL maxi, amount, yeah, contract and THEN i take, Naw i'm.
Playing i'll say he's, athletic like like everybody who see
him play can see that he's.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
Athletic he's a good.
Speaker 4 (11:25):
DEFENDER i feel like if he just knows what his
role could be at the next level and just lock into. That,
here it's hard when you're in college because it's different
roles and they're asking different. Things BUT i feel like
at the next level he could be an elite, defender you,
know athletic finish around the. ROOM i think he, can you,
know work on his shot a little. Bit it's it's
(11:48):
come a long, way BUT i think he still got
some ways to. Go so you, KNOW i think he's
in a really good spot right now and he can
only continue to get.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
