two point seven WFNZ.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
They's the twenty twenty five Keep Pounding High School Classic
presented by BELK, featuring the huff Huskies against the South
Points Stallions and the crimsly Whorlies against the West Charlotte Lyons.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
High School Football on WFNZ is brought to you by
Victory Chevrolet.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Now Life from the Bank of America Stadium. Let's hit
to the press box where Kyle Bailey and GG Jensen
have the call of tonight's.

Speaker 3 (00:31):
Action Live from Bank of America Stadium in Uptown Charlotte.
Welcome to the twenty twenty five Keep Pounding Classic High
School Classic presented by BELK. Tonight, we kick off a
special doubleheader spotlighting some of the region's premier high school

(00:54):
football powers. First up, it's a border battle with a
lot of firepower. The huff Huskies out of Courts and
they square off with in the Carolinas out of North Carolina.
That is, squaring off against perennial South Carolina powerhouse, the
South Point Stallions of rock Hill. Two programs loaded with talent, tradition,
and next level playmakers, and they get the honor of

(01:14):
opening this year's showcase on the same field the Carolina
Panthers call home. The lights are coming on, the stage
is set, and we're getting ready for kickoff and the
keep Pounding High School Classic presented by BILK. I'm Kyle
Bailey alongside JJ Jansen with you here on this opening
Friday evening of the high school football season, set to
bring you the action all night long.

Speaker 4 (01:33):
And JJ, it's good to have you. Long for the rod.
This is gonna be a great one. We got two
great football games.

Speaker 5 (01:38):
We got a North and South Carolina battle that we're
really looking forward to. We think there's gonna be a
lot of running. It's gonna be a fast, physical game.
And then the nightcap, we're gonna have a tremendous, tremendous
game between West Charlotte and Grimsley. And I don't know,
there's no better way to start off high school football
in the Carolinas than tonight on this field. And of course,
as we've talked about, the nightcap is probably the best

(01:58):
game in the country.

Speaker 4 (01:59):
Yeah, very well could be.

Speaker 3 (02:00):
And as we look out here high a top Bank
of America Stadium down on the field, Captains getting set
to meet and decide who gets the football, who will
play defense first, and what directions we're going in. Just
kind of want to stop and pause for a second.
You're an accomplished athlete, You've been in the NFL for
a long time.

Speaker 4 (02:15):
Now, how cool is this?

Speaker 3 (02:18):
I mean not just opening your season in an NFL stadium,
but for some of these kids, this is their first
high school football action. I mean, it's set in the bar.
Kind of high, isn't it.

Speaker 5 (02:27):
I remember my first high school football game I played
in front of about one hundred people, and I thought
I was thought I was playing on the moon somewhere.
I can only imagine how these guys feel in front
of a couple thousand fans, and certainly many of them
were probably watching our game last night. And now they're
right there. You know, coin Flip's going on right now
standing on the Panther logo. That's a pretty special moment
for those captains.

Speaker 4 (02:47):
All right.

Speaker 3 (02:48):
So we have the players meeting at midfield, like we said,
right now, kickoff just minutes away Huff and South Point,
two of the higher ranked teams in the area. We'll
talk about the preseason rankings in the new eight to
A classifications, or total of eight classifications, but also the
preseason top twenty five from the Charlotte Observer. Those folks
do a great job giving you an idea of who

(03:09):
the best programs in the country are each and every year.
But rest assured these are two of the best. JJ
just said it later tonight. We've got West Charlotte and Grimsley,
the number one ranked teams in eight A and seven
A respectfully in the preseason, coming in tonight. But a
team like Huff in eight A, I believe they're coming
in number four preseason. They've got high hopes and high

(03:29):
expectations as well here in North Carolina.

Speaker 5 (03:32):
And one of the things that we're looking for and
is the quality of opponents at the start. With all
of the changes in the classifications, all of these teams,
especially North Carolina, are incentivized to start their season against
some really quality opponents. It helps in the RPIs, it
helps it all part of the building up process towards
the playoffs this year.

Speaker 4 (03:51):
And really all the coaches we've talked to said, hey, look,
I use this.

Speaker 5 (03:55):
These games here early in the year as the carrot
to get it my guys motivated in the high summer
days in the spring when it's easy to be a
little casual. They know how good of an opponent they've
got here. Huff and South Point getting started here tonight.
They know this is a big game and they've got
to have everything ready to go week one.

Speaker 4 (04:13):
They absolutely do.

Speaker 3 (04:14):
We're getting set for kickoff here as South Point will
kick the football to the Huff Huskies. Huff will receive
the football to start the game. And you could feel
the excitement in the building right now. I see number
nineteen Christian Carter stepping back as one of the potential
return men.

Speaker 4 (04:31):
Back here.

Speaker 3 (04:32):
South Point will be kicking right to left on your
radio dial. It's nice to say that once again as
high school football season is back momentarily. Huff Husky's donning
the gray uniforms trimmed in whites, a little bit of
blue white helmets as well, and the South Point Stallions
come in with the.

Speaker 4 (04:50):
Road white uniforms.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
They are from south of the border after all, red
trim red lettering and gray helmets trimmed in white and
red as well. Most of them out there donning the
red cleats, nice little accent.

Speaker 4 (05:03):
As the ball is teed up at.

Speaker 3 (05:05):
The forty yard line, and we are underway here in
twenty twenty five high end over end kick fielded at
the eleven yard line by Christian Carter. He meets a
group of tacklers, slides through a couple across the twenty
five out to the thirty yard line, and that's where
the huff Huskies will begin their opening drive of the season.

Speaker 5 (05:26):
We're really excited to see kind of how coach Baker's
bringing out. You know, he was fun with us on
the production meeting. He goes on the play, color me
myself and I am getting ready to go. But he's
really excited about his offensive line. He said, I'm toughest
on my offensive line. He was a running back in college.
I'm really expecting them to try to come out here

(05:46):
established around. They've got a ton of excellent players on
the outside. But ultimately he wants to run the ball
in and pose as will here and we'll see how
they kind of get started trying to develop that early
in the ball game.

Speaker 3 (05:57):
Ethan Royal, the quarterback. He's in the gun to start
this when first year leading the offense, though this will
be his second start. He got a spot start as
a freshman when the starter went down a couple of
years ago, and well he won the game. So he's
won to zero as a starter, and his first throw
is complete out wide to Christian Carter. Nice hands on
the near sideline, keeps his feet in bounds and picks
up fifteen and an immediate first down for the Husky offense.

Speaker 4 (06:19):
Nice.

Speaker 5 (06:20):
I'm just kind of getting a quick throw here. It's
nice to get your quarterback into the flow of the game.
Some teams do that by running. Sometimes it's the quick
little stop routes at the bottom of screen five.

Speaker 4 (06:28):
Yards, turn around and throw it. Let your athlete make
a play, So.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
A quick hit or to start the game, pickup of
fifteen yards royal to Carter and now win the gun
back to his left this time, and this time he'll
hand it off and run around the right side.

Speaker 4 (06:46):
Picks up a couple.

Speaker 5 (06:48):
When we come into these games, you're trying to establish
an identity, so many coaches want to kind of start
it the right way. It's the quick throws, it's the
run game. As this game begins to open up and
teams have kind of done feeling each other, they're out,
we'll probably see the bigger plays begin to come. But
right now, coach Baker is going to say, hey, Ethan,
just get us start to get us into a good play.
Get the ball in the hands of everybody else, be

(07:09):
a little bit of a point guard for us.

Speaker 3 (07:11):
Kinda is ten and with the run. That time he
picked up three four wide receivers this time on second
down trips to the far side. But Royle will keep
it himself running around the left side, across midfield and
into plus territory. Tackled at the south point forty seven
yard line, we'll call it a pick.

Speaker 5 (07:27):
Up of four as much as as much as Huff
wants to kind of get started and establish a run.
Like south Points defense is really strong, especially up front
fifty three Miles Wilson and Seth tillmant number twenty three
tons of offers. So it'll be interesting to see how
Huff attacks the south Point defense because the strength of
their defenses on the interior, and usually football coaches want

(07:48):
to run on the interior, kind of impose their will.

Speaker 4 (07:50):
Good matchup Huff moving left to right on the far side.

Speaker 3 (07:53):
Hash it's a give on third down and short and
stuffed in the backfield. That time Roy turned and gave
to number twenty one Jamerion Morrison, who Deshaun Baker told
us he loves in short yardage situations.

Speaker 4 (08:06):
JJ. But no luck right there. I mean probably deep down.

Speaker 5 (08:09):
I think coach thought, hey, this is probably four down territory,
you know, third and two, but with the loss of
three knocks them back into fourth and five and into
a punt as the last thing that he kind of
thought would happen there. You run the ball on third
down and short, thinking, even if I get a half
a yard, I'm right there in four down territory. You
don't expect to lose three early in the game on
a run from plus territory.

Speaker 4 (08:29):
Now, you certainly don't.

Speaker 3 (08:31):
Nelson Bailey will come out to punt the football for
the huff Huskies. Bailey moved in from the state of
Colorado within the last month, and Deshaun Baker told us
they have been drilling all things punt team every day
in practice to make sure they're ready for these situations.
But on fourth and five, before the snap can go back,

(08:51):
what do we have delay here?

Speaker 4 (08:52):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (08:53):
Little delay a game. It's one of the things that
I was remember about high school football. These officials will
not pump the clock for any of the seventeen year
olds on the field unlike a pro game, so sometimes
you get a little bit of a transition air there
from offense to punt team.

Speaker 4 (09:12):
So they'll try again. Now fourth and ten.

Speaker 3 (09:14):
Nelson takes the snap, wobbly low kick caught at the
twenty six yard line.

Speaker 4 (09:24):
So out where, Gordon, I believe your catch there some.

Speaker 3 (09:26):
Mere Gordon Miles a man who played against Tough a
year ago as a member of the Northwestern Trojans. He
transferred into South Point this year, and so for the
second straight year, we'll face the huff Huskies to start
the season. He caught a punt right there in traffic
at the twenty six and now south Point we'll get
the football for the first time today, and.

Speaker 5 (09:43):
As Bobby Collins' offense comes out here Cameron McMillan's he said, hey, look,
I want him to be a point guard. Get the
ball in the hands of the playmakers, get it to
Malik Ratliffe and his Sunday guy Jesvian currents. We'll see
how quickly the coming out here early in a spread
formation makes it a little bit easier on the order.

Speaker 4 (10:00):
Back to see the full field.

Speaker 3 (10:02):
McMillan started last year as a junior. He's head coach
Bobby Collins telling us a couple of nights ago, he's
a point guard, he's a distributor. That's what they're asking
from him here in this game and this season. And
he hands it off on first down to number four
r J. Brown, who slips one tackle and picks up
a couple. And Brown, you know, his brother Rashwan is
also a back.

Speaker 5 (10:22):
You know, Coach was talking about, I really like running
the ball with these guys because they block for each other.
You know, it's easy when you can just call the
name Brown and you got two guys that can run
the ball hard. I think what we're really going to
see here from Coach Collins is really a spread formation.

Speaker 4 (10:35):
But at the end of the day, Coach Collins wants
to run. He's a he's an offensive line by trade.
You know. Coach Baker wants to run the ball, spread
it out, to run it.

Speaker 3 (10:44):
Four wide receivers, trips to the near side, quick hitter,
and it's complete that time, caught by number nine Dalon Duncan.

Speaker 5 (10:53):
Does it seem like these coaches sort of have a
similar philosophy, an early run and early kind of quick
five yard stop route that balls thrown to Dalan Duncan,
who's got an offer from Katama College. We have a
lot of guys on this field with offers all over
the place, which is really cool to see. Obviously they
hope to come all the way back around to Sundays
on this field.

Speaker 4 (11:12):
But pretty good for a Friday night. Yeah, not too shabby.

Speaker 3 (11:16):
Pickup of six right there, brings up third down and
two from the thirty nine yard line. Little early movement there.
McMillan hands it off and that was stuffed at the
line of scrimmage.

Speaker 4 (11:34):
These two defenses.

Speaker 3 (11:35):
Trading third down stops to start the game, and the
Huff defense forces a punt.

Speaker 5 (11:39):
As much as we wanted to talk about early the
strength of South Points defense Huff, these teams are built identical.
I mean they really look the same, and a really
nice job there by Will Berlin and Chris Hilliard on
the inside.

Speaker 4 (11:51):
I mean it's.

Speaker 5 (11:52):
Gonna be really hard to run on both of these defenses,
and the coaches know each other, so I mean almost identical.

Speaker 4 (11:58):
Opening drives, quick.

Speaker 3 (11:59):
Throw, inside run very similar, and the punt a misfire
will sail out of bounds along the near sideline near
side judge moving all the way up to the forty
four Look call forty three yard line and the huff
Huskies will take over again. Not exactly what Bobby Collins

(12:21):
was looking for from a special team's unit and his
punter that time, Cade Watkins, who you know better than
I do. That was seemed to be a missfire.

Speaker 4 (12:28):
Yeah, that ball's a little bit off the side of
his foot.

Speaker 5 (12:30):
You know, as as you're kind of getting into the
game on special teams, you'd like to be able to
make a big exchange. But these coaches, more than anything else,
they want to get the ball back.

Speaker 4 (12:39):
No misfires on special teams.

Speaker 5 (12:41):
Most errors in special teams happen in the first two
weeks as everyone's getting comfortable. So even though that wasn't
a great punt the end of the day, get the
ball out, move it on the other side of the
fifty and let your defense play.

Speaker 4 (12:51):
First down to ten for the Huskies.

Speaker 3 (12:53):
Man in motion royal and the gun swings it out
to the flat far side, a big run at a
first down for the huff Huskies.

Speaker 5 (13:04):
And we really kind of got to see the first
sort of exploring of the arm slots that Ethan Royle
has a little side on throw here as he swings
it out to Jaden White, who's a senior, and for
a little wide receiver screen, getting the ball in space.
Easy throws right now for Royal. That's a huge advantage here.

Speaker 3 (13:19):
Early pick up of eleven on the play first down
and ten now and plus territory from the forty six
yard line, and the give is to number eleven. It's
Jason Wilkerson taking his first carry of the day, picks.

Speaker 4 (13:41):
Up one as they move here in plus territory.

Speaker 5 (13:44):
I would like to think that the coach Baker is saying, hey, look,
we want to get into four down territory. We'd love
to get a shot play somewhere in this sequence. You know,
so far it's been these quick hitters, it's these inside runs,
and really there hasn't been a ton of room to operate.

Speaker 4 (13:58):
Five yards here, six yards here.

Speaker 5 (14:00):
These coaches are slowly hunting explosives because they've got great
athletes on the field, and as we've seen so far,
the defenses are really spread out because there's so much
athleticism on the field.

Speaker 3 (14:11):
Here's Royal second down and nine straight drop, can't find anybody,
tucks it and runs and has enough for a first
down inside the south point thirty five. Tackled at the
thirty four and that'll be a pickup of twelve for
the quarterback.

Speaker 4 (14:24):
Ethan Royal coach's best friend here.

Speaker 5 (14:26):
When you can call a pass play and everything's covering,
your quarterback can just run and scramble for a first down.
You prefer not for he takes a big hit there,
as it looks like we got a timeout on the field.

Speaker 4 (14:35):
I think we have an injury.

Speaker 5 (14:36):
But the biggest thing that I see there is when
you can spread the field out and your quarterback can
go and make a good run, good decision. He doesn't
have to force throws. That helps a coach so much
to call those pass plays.

Speaker 4 (14:48):
It absolutely does.

Speaker 3 (14:49):
Scoreless here early on in the Keep Pounding High School Classic,
five point fifty one left to go in the opening quarter.
Kyle Bailey, JJ Janssen here with you to start your
Friday evening and to begin the twenty twenty five high
school football campaign. Two games tonight. I also am keeping
my eye out as his JJ for our what a
Burger player of the game tonight, JJ and I have

(15:09):
been bestowed a great honor and a great power tonight.
Whoever ends up as the What a Burger player of
the game will end up with a year's worth of
free What a Burger as a result of earning that
accolade tonight. So you and I have a great deal
of burden and responsibility on our shoulders this evening.

Speaker 4 (15:26):
I'm gonna be real honest with you.

Speaker 5 (15:27):
The leader in the clubhouse are both long snappers, so
we'll see if anyone can can outpace them. But there's
so many good players on this field right now, tons
of commits. We'll talk about the Huff defense in a
little bit here when we get an opportunity, but so
many commits.

Speaker 4 (15:44):
We talked about Shane Biemer in the open.

Speaker 5 (15:46):
Yeah, he's got a lot of his future Saturday guys
on this field.

Speaker 4 (15:49):
It's pretty cool to watch, no doubt about it.

Speaker 3 (15:51):
Coming out of the time out, first down and ten
line of scrimmage, the thirty five yard line, well thirty
four actually moving left to right far side, Hash Royal
in the backfield back to his left, but he slides
up to an upbacks position. Here's Royle going deep down
the field into the end zone. Too much overthrown incomplete,

(16:14):
and there's our first look at kind of a free
shot there.

Speaker 5 (16:17):
Tyron Evans number eight on the outside, he gets single
coverage on first down. Royle probably knows how I'm in
four down territory at got manned man coverage.

Speaker 4 (16:25):
Let me throw a ball up and give my guy
a best chance. But CJ.

Speaker 5 (16:29):
Werry number two for south Point, he's right there with
him again. Miami commit Tyron Evans versus another college guy
and CJ. Werry are There's gonna be these battles all
over the field.

Speaker 3 (16:41):
Absolutely, and you have an athlete like Tyron Evans, you
completely understand taking that shot right there, especially on first
down and now second down and ten from the thirty
four clock stopped at five point forty four to play,
two seconds left on the play clock.

Speaker 4 (16:54):
They better hurry here.

Speaker 3 (16:55):
Just gets it off and the handoff is to Morrison
sprinting off tackle left side to the short side of
the field. He's knocked out of bounds at about the
thirty two yard line, and so we're in that again.

Speaker 5 (17:07):
We got we got third and medium third and looks
like about five yards here. So coach Baker's sitting there saying, hey,
what can we do to get.

Speaker 4 (17:16):
This into fourth and three or less.

Speaker 5 (17:17):
So you know, Ethan Royle's looking, do I have a
quick completion, maybe a quick run something to get me
into fourth and short outside of field goal range.

Speaker 4 (17:26):
Certainly not punning. They got two plays to work with here.

Speaker 3 (17:29):
From the far side. Hash still pick up of three
that time for Morrison. So third and seven, here's royal
straight jo drop. Here comes the pressure drops it off
to Evans. Evans makes the grab. If age two defenders
has the first down fighting inside the twenty and tackled
at the fifteen yard line. A pickup of sixteen and
you saw that time JJ the entire defensive line break through,

(17:50):
and I think they all knew at once what was coming.

Speaker 5 (17:53):
Great call there, you know, they get into sort of
this double mug look where both linebackers in the A gap.
They're showing six six blitzers. They got everyone come up
the middle and Royle is able to hit a quick
wide receiver screen. Perfect play call for that blitz.

Speaker 3 (18:05):
Going quickly here from the fifteen yard line. It's a
handoff here on first down and doesn't go for much.
Looks like a gain of about two yards.

Speaker 4 (18:15):
One of the things we've seen here on this drive.

Speaker 5 (18:17):
We're getting a little more uptempo from Shan Baker and
the huff Huskies.

Speaker 4 (18:21):
He uses a lot of uptempo for his play calls.

Speaker 5 (18:24):
He uses a lot of what they call one word,
so the whole play call is boiled down to demon
or angel or some sort of word that everyone can
quickly know what's going on as they're slowing it down
a little bit here. But it allows these guys to
play really fast because there's a name that everyone knows
what to do, and you're able to get some.

Speaker 4 (18:41):
Plays off very quickly.

Speaker 3 (18:42):
Second down and nine from the south point thirteen yard line,
huff Huskies on their second possession, knocking on the door.
We are scoreless, but they are looking to change that.
The handoff around the right side this time goes to
number twenty. Marvin Red picks up his first carry of
the day and picks up a couple of yards.

Speaker 4 (18:59):
So we're seeing a little bit of the variety here
in the offense.

Speaker 5 (19:02):
We've got some inside hitters what they call do a
lot of double teams at the point of attack, and
then they're spreading out and throwing the ball to the
wide receiver screens. It's a little bit of an inside
outside game right now. For Huff gain a five on
the play for Marvin Reed. Nice debut into this one,
and they're on third down. Not sure if that was
a hard count or not, but a couple of South
Points Stallion defenders up front jumped prior to the snap

(19:24):
and all the Huff Huskies should pick up an automatic
first down here. Gerald Dixon is the defensive coordinator of
South Point and he's not going to be happy. But
one of the things that happens is you start snapping
this ball seven eight, nine times. Those defensive linement Miles Wilson,
Seth Tillman, Jasiah Lewis, they start getting a little antsy,

(19:46):
they're trying to affect the passer, and all of a
sudden you can bring in a hard count and get
a little get them back on their heels a little bit.

Speaker 4 (19:52):
Really well done there by Huff.

Speaker 3 (19:58):
Here on first down and goal, Royal fakes the handoff,
keeps it himself. Did he pushed the pile or did
the pile push him? Either way, it's a touchdown. Huff
pay dirt six nothing Huskies.

Speaker 4 (20:10):
Really nice play call that that was really cool to see.

Speaker 5 (20:13):
So you get two pullers moving the left, two offensive
line and moving the left wide receiver coming back on
a jet sweep to the right and opens just the middle.
It's kind of the parting of the Red Sea there,
but Ethan Royle pushing the pile that turns into about
eight to nine Huff Huskies pushing their quarterback into the
into the end zone. And that's a really really good
drive there for Huff and and Ethan Royal that you know,

(20:36):
that's what you're looking for in your in your junior
quarterback really in his first real real start marks the
team down there.

Speaker 4 (20:42):
That's a really nice drive for Huff.

Speaker 3 (20:43):
Cole Johnson on to kick the pat clean snap kick
is up through the post. It's good. Seven to nothing.
Huff Huskies taken early lead, south point set to get
the football back for the second time themselves when we
return here to Keep Pounding High School Classic presented by Belk.

Speaker 2 (21:03):
You are listening to that Keep Pounding High School Classic
on Sports Radio ninety two point seventy UNZ.

Speaker 3 (21:17):
At eleven rather nine play fifty three yard touchdown drive
for the huff Huskies on their second possession of the day.
They take an early lead seven to nothing with three
point thirty eight left to go here in the opening
frame of the first game of the Keep Pounding Classic
presented by Belk Kyle Bailey JJ Jansen with you bringing
you the action, and the action continues on the ensuing kickoff,

(21:37):
a big return for South Point out near midfield to
the forty eight yard line JJ Jansen.

Speaker 4 (21:43):
The kickoff.

Speaker 5 (21:44):
The kickoff by Jonah Holiday number twelve for a huff
was an unbelievable ball lander right in the corner and
then all of a sudden, kayten Watkins, kind of to
do everything athlete for South Point takes it out of
the corner. I thought he was going to get tackled
about the fifteen yard line, cut back through the middle,
Brooke one tackle and before you know it, it was
him and the kicker at the fifty yard line.

Speaker 4 (22:03):
He did get him down, but who that was almost
a disaster.

Speaker 5 (22:07):
On the kickoff return turns into the biggest play of
the day so far for South Point.

Speaker 3 (22:11):
Absolutely South Point gets the football back here. They came
up empty on their opening drive and quarterback Cameron McMillan
will lead them out for drive number two, moving right
to left line of scrimmage to forty seven. McMillan drifting
to his left and underthrows it coming near side looking
for number three Caden Vassel.

Speaker 4 (22:30):
So South Point is going to do it a little
bit different.

Speaker 5 (22:32):
They utilize sort of a ten or twenty personnel.

Speaker 4 (22:35):
There is no tight end that's zero in that number.

Speaker 5 (22:37):
There's no tight end on the field, so it's running
backs and wide receivers exclusively. They've spread out Huff a
little bit more, which I think is important. As good
as Huffs defense is, it starts up front for them,
being able to spread everything out is going to give
them a little more space to work quickly.

Speaker 3 (22:53):
They go second down in ten that was a screen
pass out to the flats about the four yard line
catch made by number nine Dalan Duncan, but he was
swarmed immediately and that's a loss of four yards for
South Point on second down.

Speaker 5 (23:09):
Leaves them in third down and fifteen to go. And
we talked about this defense is really impressive. Jackson Heath
there defeats the blocker and basically that's a wide receiver screen.
Real quick, you expect your wide receiver to win the
block on your on the nickel the junior uh And
and Jackson just out overpowers the wide receiver.

Speaker 4 (23:28):
Sure did so.

Speaker 3 (23:28):
Third down and fifteen from their own forty two. Here's
McMillan straight drop rifles at far side, too high, incomplete
and a three and out for the South Points Stallions.

Speaker 4 (23:40):
And we're gonna keep talking about this. This Huff Huskies
defense is really really impressive.

Speaker 5 (23:44):
Samari Matthews the Texas commit on one side, Zion Murphy
the senior on the other, Jackson Heath in side as
the nickel. Uh, they're gonna be hard to throw on.
They've got to do better on first down. We haven't
seen much in the way of success early in the series,
and it's turning a lot of third down lungs, which
isn't great.

Speaker 3 (24:03):
And here's the punt from South Point from the thirty
number twenty eight. Drew Johnson, awaiting for Huff, picks it
up at the eighteen, runs into one defender, tries to
get away, but the gang tacklers arrive at the twenty
six yard line, and so Huff following a scoring drive

(24:23):
and a three and out forced by its defense, we'll
get the football back with all the momentum here in
the first quarter. Yeah, the huf Huskies is a team
that is a relatively young program, opened their school's doors
in twenty ten, but they've quickly grown into one of
North Carolina's perennial powers. Debuted back in twenty ten in

(24:45):
two and eight season, but Huff has transformed itself into
a consistent conference champion and state contender. Just last year
under de Shawn Baker, twelve and two record went undefeated
in conference play and stormed through the playoffs with wins
over South Iredale Independence in Mallard Creek before falling short
in the four A State semifinals against the eventual champion

(25:06):
Grimsley Whorlies, who we'll see here tonight in the eight
o'clock game. Is right there on first down Ethan Royle
a dangerous pass that skips to the turf incomplete.

Speaker 5 (25:14):
But you had the same reaction I did. You heard
me grimace a little bit. So it's a little bit
of a play action faith. They're trying to throw it
to the flat and Royle kind of looked like this
play is over, I'm throwing it away, but instead of
launching it about nine rows into the stands, he kind
of floated over a covered defender and I thought he
was throwing a pick six unnecessarily there. So I had
a little bit of a.

Speaker 4 (25:35):
Moment there, didn't we all?

Speaker 3 (25:37):
Here we go second down and ten, Huff moving left
to right from the far side. Hash snaps back, but
here comes a penalty flag from the back judge. Let's
see what it's all about. That is a false start
against Toff. That'll be a five yard penalty, of course,
and sets up second down and fifteen from their own
twenty two yard lot.

Speaker 5 (25:59):
That's Sean Kennedy right tackle, the senior right tackle for Huff.
And these are the situations that whenever you've got a
quarterback in this first start, and we've talked about Ethan,
this is a second he had one as a freshman.

Speaker 4 (26:10):
You're trying to keep these second.

Speaker 5 (26:12):
And long, third and long situations because there's just not
as many plays. So you're trying to get about half
the yards back and get yourself into a third and
six and manageable jamari.

Speaker 3 (26:20):
On Morrison in motion on second down, little eye candy there,
it's a drop off to Brown. Brown makes the catch
at about the twenty four and gets back to I
believe the original line of scrimmage plus one, So a
pickup of six right there for Brown.

Speaker 5 (26:37):
I like what Baker's the coach Baker's done here. There's
been a lot of screens. There's been a lot of
quick hitters, you know, South Point again, the strength of
their defenses up front, with those big d tackles Miles
Wilson and Steth Tillman, they're trying to let them in
and run some outside screens. This one was a middle
screen to the running back ten and in the middle
of the field. But they're trying to slow down this
good rush here from South Point, and they've done a

(26:57):
nice job of doing about three or four screens so far.

Speaker 3 (27:00):
Pardon me, Connis tenon making the catch right there, my mistake.
Here's Royal on third down and nine nearly knock down,
keeps his feet, pump fakes, but can't get away from
a defender at the twenty five yard line, and that
looks like number thirty two Darien Judge coming up to
make the stop on third down.

Speaker 4 (27:17):
In fact, it was.

Speaker 3 (27:20):
A nice job by Royal there to keep his feet,
but a better defensive play to end the drive, Judge.

Speaker 5 (27:24):
The nickel comes up in space tackling an athletic quarterback
in space. That's a really nice open field tackle. You're
not gonna see too many of those said, the athletic
ability of both these quarterbacks is is pretty unique. So
an open field tackle from your nickels is a good
play for you.

Speaker 3 (27:44):
And so the huff Huskies will punt it away. It's
another low that would hit it. South Point Stallion. Did
Huff get the football back? They believe they did.

Speaker 4 (27:55):
They did.

Speaker 5 (27:56):
They got the ball back? How about that? And that
is our first we said special teams blunders. First game
of the year. Everyone's a little out of sorts.

Speaker 4 (28:04):
Will he die? Number twenty one for South Point.

Speaker 5 (28:06):
He's on the outside, he's guarding one of the gunners.
We get what we call like a Peter call, like
get Oway poisoned Peter, and all I can say is
he never got it. Kate Watkins is the returner back there.
He's clearly saying, hey, we're not gonna catch this. I
don't know if there's no poison or no Peter, but
all of a sudden, the ball bounces and it hits Die.

(28:27):
He doesn't even know it's there. The punt returner's job
is to get everybody away from a poisoned kick, and
ultimately that's gonna fall on Watkins as the punt returner.
Get everybody away. That's the first big mistake of this game.
And like we said, it shows up on special teams
because it's the hardest thing to replicate in practice.

Speaker 3 (28:46):
How about that Drew Johnson, the senior defensive back and
return man, was there to pick up the loose ball
and the huff Husky's up seven to nothing with thirty
two seconds left to go. Here in the opening quarter,
have new life from the forty two the south point
forty two. It's a swing pass out to the far side,
complete and the catch made by number six Jaydon White.

Speaker 4 (29:07):
So I wonder if.

Speaker 5 (29:07):
South Point's pick picking up on this a couple times
now so far in the game. You know, huff is
putting a wide receiver behind behind the offensive line in
a running back formation and then immediately running a screen
three wide receivers out to the left motion the wide
receiver in the backfield out That one was Jaden White
in the backfield. So I wonder if they'll be picking

(29:27):
up on that tendency they like throwing these running back
screens on the outside. They're really just glorified run plays,
but in space and you get easy completions for your quarterback.

Speaker 3 (29:37):
About that, well, that'll be the end of the first quarter.
They let the clock run down one. In the books,
it's seven to nothing Huff Huskies, but they are marching
after some good special teams luck.

Speaker 4 (29:47):
We'll flip the field when we come back.

Speaker 3 (29:49):
It's to Keep Pounding Classic presented by Belk on Sports
Radio ninety two to seven wfn Z.

Speaker 2 (29:54):
If you're listening to that, Keep Pounding high School Classic
on Sports Radio ninet UFNZ.

Speaker 3 (30:06):
Second quarter action moments away Kyle Bailey, JJ Jansen. We've
settled in as the Huff Huskies and the South Point
Stallions finished the opening quarter seven to nothing with the
Huskies on top, and the Huskies were about they did
punt the football Cole Nelson, the Colorado Transfer, Well, he
hit one and it hit a South Point Stallion. Drew
Johnson was there to recover. So the drive continues. The

(30:29):
clock ran down there at the end of the opening frame,
and we'll pick things up in the second quarter. Second
down and six, with the ball on the south Point
thirty eight yard line. Huff Husky's now moving right to
left on your radio dial. A monster matchup here to
start the high school football season in the state of
North Carolina.

Speaker 4 (30:46):
And a border war at that.

Speaker 5 (30:47):
We've heard these North Carolina coaches feels like they got
a little chip on their shoulder when it comes to
South Carolina high school football.

Speaker 4 (30:53):
They want to prove something out here.

Speaker 5 (30:54):
Yeah, Coach Baker's taking a few shots at the the
high salaries of the South Carolina coaches.

Speaker 4 (30:59):
There definitely some interstate rivalry.

Speaker 5 (31:02):
South Carolina is known for great football, especially South Point,
and Huff's trying to match that.

Speaker 4 (31:06):
And exceed that. And Coach Baker's got a little chip
on his shoulder.

Speaker 3 (31:09):
Trips wide receivers to the far side, royal fakes, the handoff, turns,
throws far side catches made at the line of scrimmage
or just behind it, and it's a pickup of two.
They're doing a nice job. Again, We've talked about this
a few times now. There's been a lot of easy
throws for Ethan Royle.

Speaker 5 (31:24):
You know, Coach said, hey, he's got he's got a
lot of armslots think think Patrick Mahomes, think Matthew Stafford
can throw from a lot of different angles. It allows
you to get the ball to different spots on the
field easily.

Speaker 4 (31:34):
As a quarterback.

Speaker 3 (31:37):
Pick up of two on the play third down and
four now from the thirty six yard line.

Speaker 5 (31:45):
Looking at the sideline, kind of changing the call, getting
an audible in something better for the offense.

Speaker 3 (31:53):
See number fifteen out there, Jamiir Anderson right there. Morrison
dropped in the backfield, and once again the Stallions getting penetration.

Speaker 5 (32:04):
And there's Seth Tillman for south point the first time.
He's sort of shown up here, little counter scheme where
they're pulling two linemen left to right as you look
at it from behind, until look when there's a when
there's any sort of pulling guards and penetration is the
best friend of a defense. And Seth Tillman gets in there,
makes a three yard stop it once again. Huff had

(32:25):
a chance there in four down territory and gets knocked
back on third and medium and they're punting again. Yeah,
loss of four on the play brings up fourth down
and eight. That's the second time tonight Jamarion Morrison, a
very physical runner, has been dropped in the backfield. Another
punt from the Huskies, another wobbler from Nelson, a fair
catch called for and made at the eighteen yard line

(32:46):
by number eleven some mere Gordon Miles.

Speaker 4 (32:48):
The Northwestern Transfer. Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 5 (32:53):
As much as coaches want to have a punter that
hits it really far in a big, beautiful ball, the
ones that give everyone anxiety is when that ball's floating
in the air. So I always sort of wondered, as
much as a coach wants their guy to hit a bomb,
sometimes you should just kind of shank one and put
it in the middle of everybody and maybe you can
get a turnover. We saw it was actually a better
one the first punt. That one was much That one

(33:15):
was much worse, and Zamir Gordon alertly get everyone away
and catch it and live to fight another day.

Speaker 4 (33:22):
So South Point takes over here on offense.

Speaker 3 (33:24):
Ten twenty seven left to go in the second quarter,
and McMillan and the Stallions get the ball back four
wide receivers, three to the far side of the formation,
left side, that is number four R J. Brown, the
loan back of the backfield to his left. Here's McMillan
tucks it, runs across the twenty across the twenty five

(33:45):
and a shoe string tackle at the twenty eight yard
line by number five Ryan Peterson.

Speaker 5 (33:51):
So a much better first down play here. Obviously, the
passing play breaks down, but McMillan's able to find a
little spot get himself a first down now moving the
chains now you can begin to kind of get back
in to your second and third kind of level place.
When you don't get first downs at the ending of
the drive, it's hard to build offensive momentum.

Speaker 3 (34:12):
Here's McMillan on first down after having moved the sticks,
handoff goes to R. J. Brown and Brown has his
helmet ripped off at the line of scrimmage.

Speaker 4 (34:20):
No game.

Speaker 5 (34:21):
I always think that's one of those plays where you're
as a defender, you take the helmet off and you're like,
I hope no one thought of I grabbed the face mouse.
Whether or not you did, that's one of those sometimes
you get kind of an automatic flag just because the
helmet comes flying off from the defender.

Speaker 3 (34:36):
Sincere Brewster and Chris Hilliard a couple of senior defensive
tackles combining to make that stop right there. Now it's
ray Sean Brown in the backfield with McMillan. McMillan checking
the wristband, same formation, moving left to right. Three wide
receivers to the left side of the formation, one to
the newyear deep ball down the middle of the field.
Nobody home and I'm not quite sure what happened right there.

Speaker 5 (34:57):
And they had three receivers to the top and they
they kind of had a twisting formation, but from the
outside you're getting a post that you're running from the
outside back towards the middle of the field, and it
was kind of like he didn't right quite know where
the angle was and you got more of a across
the middle route from the receiver as opposed to a
post from Malik Ratliff Number one.

Speaker 3 (35:21):
Incomplete pass from McMillan. South Point has run the football
primarily so far here today. Bobby Collins promised us that
would be the case. But here on third down and ten,
they'll have to throw it. And an errant pass as
McMillan rifles one to the near side intended for number
four R. J. Brown, but he was double covered and
it wouldn't have mattered anyway. Incomplete, south Point will punt

(35:43):
once again, and I didn't really like that decision. It
was a throw short of the sticks into double coverage.

Speaker 5 (35:48):
Feels like maybe McMillan's forced a couple of these third downs,
and again that's three times now, third and long, it's
putting a lot on the quarterback's arm.

Speaker 4 (35:56):
That's always a tougher position to come from.

Speaker 5 (35:59):
I'd like to see them get a little bit more
basic early in downs, get into the second and manageable
easier on the quarterback.

Speaker 3 (36:06):
Cameron Midland won for four for six yards. To start
this game. Is there's a punt that goes over the
head of the return ban. Drew Johnson, the Husky senior,
picks it up at the twenty two breaks two tackles
across the thirty still on his feet across the thirty
five out to the thirty six yard line, and in
some ways that play there just epitomize high school football.

(36:27):
It looked disastrous for a moment, but Johnson picked it
up and proceeded to gain about eighteen yards.

Speaker 5 (36:32):
Yeah, ball head over his head, you know, from South
Points perspective, Mike Punter just hit a bomb and then
all of a sudden the ball comes flying back at you.

Speaker 4 (36:39):
And every coach is holding their breath.

Speaker 5 (36:41):
So really nice job there by Drew Johnson getting back
on it, finding some space. And when you get those
longer punts, there usually is more space on the field
because it's harder to maintain lanes and made a really
big play for South Point turn into just kind of
an average punt. It's about a thirty yard net and
Huff takes over at their own thirty seven yard line.

Speaker 3 (37:02):
As I mentioned earlier, the Huff Huskies a relatively young program,
but man, they've been very, very tough to beat these
last several years. The growth of the program has been remarkable,
turning that brand new program fifteen years ago into a
fixture in late November high school football in North Carolina.
They produce some impressive talent along the way. NFL cornerback

(37:22):
and Clemson national champion Mark Fields, Clemson safety and twenty
sixteen national champion Van Smith, current Clemson kicker Nolan Hooser,
who set the national high school record for career field goals.
Right here at Huff got a time out taken on
the field. We'll keep it right here as the South
Point Stallions will head to the sideline to convene as

(37:45):
they get set for another defensive series.

Speaker 4 (37:48):
Here, seven to nothing ballgame, Huff on top.

Speaker 3 (37:50):
It's certainly not a time for urgency if you're Bobby
Collins or South Point, but you're looking to get something
started here, You're looking for a big play, ideally a turnover.

Speaker 5 (37:59):
JAJ Well, I'd be really I'd be really worried right
now because the offense or South Point isn't really doing
much moving the ball. Huffs moved it on one drive,
but it's kind of been a defensive stalemate except for
the one drive. We obviously had the special teams turnover
that immediately turned into a punt. So both as we expected,
both defenses are kind of hold and serve. But from

(38:20):
from South Points perspective, not only do I need to
get a stop, I need to get a little bit momentum.
And this is when you begin to lean on your defense.
Defensive coordinator Gerald Dixon right now is in that huddle
going We've got to find a tipball. We've got to
find a strip of either the quarterback or a running
back and begin to change field position and change the
energy around the game, because right now does feel like
Huffs in control here through you know, the first fifteen

(38:43):
minutes of the ball game. Here with nine minutes and
six seconds left in the second quarter, and you know,
if I'm Huff, I'm trying to do more of the same.
Get the ball on the perimeter again and Eventually that
running game is going to take over the way Baker
wants it to.

Speaker 3 (38:57):
First down and ten for the huff Huskies for their
own thirty seven yard line ball spotted in the middle
of the field. Huskies moving right to left. First down
play is a handoff to the left side, goes for
a couple.

Speaker 5 (39:09):
Wh's a pretty nice collision there just to the left
the center in the a gap between Seth, sorry not
Seth Tillman Bryce again and the running back kind of
ten and big hit right there in the middle. And
then of course an offense a lineman falls on you
and your feeling a little bit more as a running
back than you normally would. Have.

Speaker 3 (39:29):
Two backs in the backfield for Royal, this time Morrison
and tennin to his left and right Royal of course
in the gun that's where he spends most of his time.
Three wide receivers, two to the right side, one to
the near. But a flag flies in before this play
can get off.

Speaker 4 (39:45):
And Coach Baker is really upset. So this.

Speaker 5 (39:52):
So that's a second fall start on Sean Kennedy the
right tackle.

Speaker 4 (39:55):
But coach, I mean Coach.

Speaker 5 (39:56):
Baker is he is pulling Kennedy off the field he
is all the way on the field right now, which
could only happen in high school football.

Speaker 4 (40:04):
But this has been a bad start.

Speaker 5 (40:05):
So the series starts with that first time out, they
don't they don't have the right people in the huddle,
and now we have a false start. That's essentially two
pre snap penalties before we've even got the ball.

Speaker 4 (40:14):
Snap twice here for huff, same formation.

Speaker 3 (40:17):
Jamir Anderson lined up buys lonesome to the near side,
now an empty backfield. Royal takes the snap straight drop
deep down the middle of the field, overthrown and the
receiver turned into quasi defender that time as number elevens
of Mere Gordon Miles, the south point safety was in
position to potentially make a play but unable to bring

(40:38):
it in incomplete.

Speaker 5 (40:39):
Looking for a shot there to Jaydon White at another post,
working back towards the middle of the field. Once again,
they're they're hunting big plays on the single coverage and
and Zamir Gordon did a.

Speaker 4 (40:50):
Really, really nice job.

Speaker 5 (40:51):
He actually, as you said, Kyle, he actually became the
offensive of player there. He was tracking the ball a
long long way and and one of the one of
the beauties of having guys playing both ways. Is the
balls in the air? Everyone's kind of an offensive player
in high football.

Speaker 3 (41:05):
Third down to twelve following the penalty, we had another
time out taken.

Speaker 4 (41:10):
Huh. How about that.

Speaker 3 (41:13):
Second time out taken of behalf by the South Point
Stallions Bobby Collins. I'm not sure if he had a
substitution issue there or just didn't like what he saw,
but he will convene with his team once again.

Speaker 5 (41:24):
Yeah, first games, there's who which team can have the
fewest amount of mistakes. We've seen substitutionaires, We've seen pre
snap penalties, and that's what.

Speaker 4 (41:33):
These coaches are really frustrated by. Early in the season.

Speaker 5 (41:36):
They've only had like one jamboree, maybe twenty twenty five plays,
and all of a sudden, you get into a big
environment like at Bank of America Stadium, and all of
a sudden, guys start to lose their minds a little bit.
And that can be as simple as, hey, am I
one of the eleven that's supposed to be on the field.

Speaker 4 (41:51):
So these coaches don't necessarily.

Speaker 5 (41:54):
Want to be taking all these timeouts early in the
game because you'd like to use them for you in
high school ball, like a one minute drill when.

Speaker 4 (42:02):
The clock is stopping here at the end of the
first half.

Speaker 5 (42:04):
In the second half, but the coaches want to make
sure we got the right personnel. This is a big
third down, third and twelve here for Huffing and South
Point really needs as much as they'd love a stop man.
This is a great opportunity to maybe find an interception
somewhere on this field.

Speaker 3 (42:19):
This is a proud South Point program, a notable four
consecutive state championships from twenty fourteen to twenty seventeen, A
rarity in a state like site South Carolina high school football.
And they trail seven to nothing, huff Huskies with the
lead though they're in third and twelve. Here's Royal fires
a dart across the middle. It's caught just short. No,

(42:42):
they're going to spot him right at the stick. That
should be huff Husky first down.

Speaker 4 (42:46):
How about that?

Speaker 5 (42:47):
So this was an NFL game, I'd be asking for
a digital review here, but that ball is right right
at the first down marker. Great catchup by Tyron Evans.
The Miami commit a little inside breaking route and that
is put right on the money.

Speaker 4 (43:02):
Evans actually catches it twice.

Speaker 5 (43:03):
He catches it and he was rewarded by getting hit
right under the chin there by Jesavian currents.

Speaker 4 (43:09):
But really nice play there for the first down. It's
a big time play. Is that's a dangerous play right there.

Speaker 3 (43:14):
Royal probably gave to Sean Baker a bit of a
heart attack and now a flag flies in. On first down,
he was looking for a screen pass over the middle
of the field and I don't know where he was
throwing that football, but lofted it up. It felt like
it stayed in the air forever. And a big hit
there at the end after the ball had fallen incomplete,
and this has the feeling of a roughing or an

(43:34):
unsportsman like we'll see what happens when they pick it up.

Speaker 4 (43:43):
We're waiting to call here, Oh how about that offensive
pass interference?

Speaker 5 (43:54):
And that might not be one of the worst penalties
ever happened here. This is another middle screen. They're trying
to get a they're trying to get an in side
screen there to the running back Marvin Reid, and Evans
just floats it up and Daikwon Evans, the linebacker for
South Point, he ends up being essentially the primary receiver
right and two offensive linemen are just shoving him, and
I think they ended up getting this on Jarvis Pott's

(44:15):
the right guard. But honestly, he should be rewarding. He
should be commended because otherwise that's an interception. But this
is a huge penalty in high school football. Now we're
at first in twenty five in the NFL first and
twenty These offensive penalties are particularly punitive in high school football.
But otherwise that might have been an interception. So I
don't think Baker will be all that upset about it.

Speaker 3 (44:35):
JJ's Wright first in twenty five from the thirty two
to a handoff in a big play here coming. It's
number twenty Marvin Reid and Red nearly.

Speaker 4 (44:45):
Picks it all up himself.

Speaker 3 (44:47):
Cut down at the forty five yard line of South Point.

Speaker 4 (44:52):
Really really nice run there by.

Speaker 5 (44:53):
Marvin Reed opens up on the left side between Jermaine Owens.

Speaker 4 (44:57):
And Amari Lawrence Broom.

Speaker 5 (44:59):
Opens up the sea gap just outside of the tackle.
There's a light box. Only five guys start in the box,
they run and he got five on five. And you
have a really good back like Marvin Reid, He's able
to quickly get to the open space and get almost
all of the back. Second and two, a twenty two
yard pickup for Marvin Reid. He's averaging thirteen and a
half yards of carry so far. Here tonight, there's another run,

(45:21):
this time to Jamrian Morrison, and Morrison picks up the
first down gain of five down to the forty yard
line of South Point and DeShawn Baker told us Morrison
is one of those guys that the first time you
hit him, you're gonna think twice the next time you
have to. He's a physical, punishing runner and it shows
up right there. Coach Baker was quick to tell us
he also reminds him of himself, so compliment the back

(45:41):
didn't say he reminds me of myself. I thought that
was a pretty clever way of describing Morrison. But a
hard runner, and he's had a lot of hard yards
so far in this game, and that's why he's in
there a lot.

Speaker 3 (45:51):
Huff continuing to move right to left. Balls on the
near side hash line of scrimmage to forty. It's first
and ten. Royal in the gun quickly gets to his
running back, looks like Morrison again and he's cut down
at the line of scrimmage. I take that back that
was number twenty four Condess Tenant with the carry.

Speaker 5 (46:09):
And Darien Judge the nickel for south point. He's getting
in on a lot of these plays. Here, he's playing
close to the line of scrimmage and he's really given
me sort of this vibe of a ball hawk.

Speaker 4 (46:18):
He wants to get in there.

Speaker 5 (46:19):
And that's the third time he's hit a running back
in the backfield. Coming from more of a defensive back position.
It's been really impressive so far. Here through a quarter.

Speaker 3 (46:29):
And a half, second down and ten o'clock, rolling five
thirty eight left to go in the first half, huff
Husky's leading seven to nothing. Looking for more. Here's Royal
and rifles one down the hash but behind the intended
target Jamir Anderson, who was opened with the throw off target,
I think he either.

Speaker 5 (46:48):
There was a little bit of a miscommunication there or
being having a bad throw was probably good because that
was right into double coverage. I think he expected him
to stop kind of at the bottom of the numbers.
He kind of kept breaking inward and all of a sudden,
you know, Ethan Royle goes from hey, I got a
guy open to oh my gosh, he's made himself covered
and kind of dirts it a little bit. Not a

(47:09):
terrible throw here, and once again we're in four down
territory and plus territory for huff.

Speaker 3 (47:15):
Ethan Royal on third and ten tucks it moving to
the right side, can't escape pressure and dropped at the
forty yard line. No gain and that'll bring up fourth
down and another huff Husky punt.

Speaker 4 (47:30):
Royal.

Speaker 5 (47:31):
Bryce and Gin does a nice job coming coming out
of the stack here. And I've been impressed so far
with South Points defense. I mean, they have been getting
after Royal. It's been a really good job.

Speaker 4 (47:43):
You know.

Speaker 5 (47:44):
The biggest thing that I that I would say is
they just haven't been able to turn the ball over yet.
They've they've they've forced four punts so far. Uh, They've
got to feel pretty good. And they're actually a gunner
is uncovered right now on the top of a top
of our screen and there's your there's your final time
out from South Point. So again we're getting special teams airs,

(48:04):
we're getting substitutionaires and South Points coaching staff right now.
Is you hate to be the guy that has to
run on the field after you only have ten because
tell the whole.

Speaker 4 (48:15):
World, I was wrong.

Speaker 3 (48:16):
Yeah, three timeouts taken here of the first half by
Bobby Collins. Clearly his mantra is you can't take him
with you, and he's using them here in the first
half because he wanted to right there. As JJ just said,
I'm Kyle Bailey, that's JJ Janssen. This is the Keep
Pounding High School Classic presented by Belt, game number one
of a monster doubleheader here at Bank of America Stadium.

(48:37):
Nice crowd on hand for the opening game, and of course,
tonight eight o'clock following this one, it's West Charlotte on
their home turf playing host to the Grimsley Whorlies out
of Greensboro. A couple of defending state champions will go
at it tonight. Make sure to keep it right here
on WFNZ for all of the action. As South Point
here in this first game is set to get the

(48:58):
football back. And if you're Bobby Collins, as we talked
about a couple of minutes ago, they've been looking for
something to spark some kind of momentum. The offense has
not been able to find it. They've come up empty
a couple of three and outs. They're going to get
the football back, so JJ offensively assuming that they can
field the punt cleanly here and send the offense out.
And you're, Bobby Collins, what are you hoping to achieve here?

(49:19):
What are you looking to do?

Speaker 5 (49:20):
They want their offensive identity to be to run the ball,
and so far through a quarter and a half, I
just haven't sensed as the ball almost goes into the
end zone there, and it does there, so this will
come back out to the twenty. I just haven't sensed
that they've really established their identity. You know, as a
team they have said, hey, Camra McMillan, we want him
to be a point guard, spread the ball around.

Speaker 4 (49:42):
But deep down, Bobby Collins wants to run the ball.
You know.

Speaker 5 (49:45):
He was the one that told us, hey, this game
could be over in ninety minutes. And I just haven't
sensed that they have been as committed to the run
game as they like.

Speaker 4 (49:51):
Now on the.

Speaker 5 (49:52):
Other side of that, Will Berlin, Sincere Brewster, Chris Hilliard,
Tristan Bennett, there is a really good defensive line for
huff to not even begin to talk about the back seven.
So they may realize, like, we're having a hard time
manufacturing a run, and so we've got to figure out
some creative ways to get going. As they're having another
substitution air here on the south point.

Speaker 3 (50:13):
Sideline, Cameron McMillan in the gun back on either side,
but he sends one in motion out to the near
side of the formation. It's a handoff to number eleven
Jason Wilkerson on first down and that's a good start
pick up before for Jason Wilkerson.

Speaker 5 (50:31):
So we get an early run here. Now you're into
second and six. Okay, how can I get this thing
in the third and two? We want to get a
first down, but we got to keep the chains going.
They're getting crushed on third and long and McMillan has
not looked comfortable just dropping back and throwing. So part
one's accomplished. Are they going to find another run here?
As they go again to the Zamir.

Speaker 3 (50:52):
Gordon, here's Wilkerson around the left side across the twenty five. Well,
I take that back, I'm sorry, is a mere my faults?

Speaker 4 (51:00):
A mere? Gordon Miles saw the carry right there.

Speaker 5 (51:04):
And so as we were talking about, now they're into
third and two. So this early set of downs has
gone according to plan. We've run the ball twice. We're
in third and short, we've got all of our plays
at our disposal, and then they go right here into
a five wide and now McMillan he can run, he
can throw. It's got a lot of open space.

Speaker 3 (51:22):
Third and two, McMillan keeps it himself designed run out
across the thirty and that will do the trick as
he's dragged down by about four Huff Huskies, but forward
progress gives him the first down.

Speaker 5 (51:34):
So Bobby Collins now says, Okay, we've run the ball
three times, we've gotten a first down. We're getting a
little bit of momentum. Now the game becomes a little
bit easier for you. Can you get another quick run here?
Obviously you don't want your quarterback taking a big hit
like Cameron McMillan does when he has to be the
quarterback runner. But now we're in the fourth play of
our drive. A little bit harder on that Huff defense

(51:56):
to get after the passer on fourth and fifth and
six plays of drives.

Speaker 3 (52:00):
Millan on first down from the thirty one yard line
keeps it himself again and brought down at the thirty
three yard line.

Speaker 4 (52:06):
That's a gain of two four straight runs, so.

Speaker 5 (52:10):
Kind of getting back to like coaches like to establish identity,
and most coaches will tell you, hey, we want to
establish a run.

Speaker 4 (52:16):
They like the idea of being tough and physical.

Speaker 5 (52:19):
But through a quarter and a half, the passing game
didn't look particularly good and they were in third and
a lot a long.

Speaker 4 (52:24):
So they come right out here.

Speaker 5 (52:25):
Four straight runs, a couple quarterback runs, a couple running
back runs, and they're gonna go ite again.

Speaker 4 (52:30):
Five in a row.

Speaker 3 (52:31):
Samir Gordon Miles takes to carry on second down, and
that huff Husky defense getting a lot of push. Sa
Mere Gordon Miles gain of about a yard and a half,
not quite out to the thirty five yard line.

Speaker 5 (52:46):
I've been particularly impressed with the defensive line and the linebacker.

Speaker 4 (52:49):
So L J.

Speaker 5 (52:49):
Porter is the linebacker, he's the ECU commit, Ryan Peterson,
He's got offers. He's only a sophomore, so there's no
easy place to go here. So South Point has got
five straight it runs, but they've only got fifteen yards,
which is particularly problematic for an offense when you're running
this much.

Speaker 3 (53:07):
Three wide receivers to the near side, one to the
far single back in the formation. McMillan slings it down
the near side, caught at midfield for a first down.
Number three Caden Vassal making a tough catch at the
fifty yard line and south Point may have a little
momentum for the first time here this afternoon.

Speaker 4 (53:26):
And that's the best throw of the day for Cameron McMillan.

Speaker 5 (53:28):
And what did I notice there was no pass rush,
So sixth play of the drive.

Speaker 4 (53:32):
That really good defensive line for Huff doesn't quite get
after the passer.

Speaker 5 (53:36):
He's got a little bit more time and throws a
really good ball on an inbreaking route right in the
middle of the field of Keaden Vassal. That's their first
explosive of the day.

Speaker 3 (53:44):
Drew Johnson blanketing the coverage right there. But it just
a better pass and catches McMillan's going deep down the
middle of the field incomplete and that one had a
chance with number one Malik Ratliffe was the intended target
JJ he was there, but that was just a fight

(54:05):
for the football.

Speaker 4 (54:06):
Yeah, they get the one on one matchup.

Speaker 5 (54:08):
It's a big post down the middle of the field
and Jason Wilkerson's on the defensive end there for Huff,
but he gets a one on one matchup and that's
two really good throws there by Cameron McMillan. You can
tell he's getting comfortable. And even though that's an incomplete pass,
you can feel the energy on the South Point sideline
starting to pick up. Hey, that's a couple of big

(54:28):
plays in the road work close. It's the first kind
of offensive life they've had the whole game. And this
drive is going perfectly according to plan for Bobby.

Speaker 3 (54:35):
Collins absolutely left guard Jayden Lee for south Point at
the end at the time out right there from Huff
urging his teammates on telling them let's go. They feel
like they've got some momentum out there. Both teams in
the huddle right now, one forty nine left to go here.
In the first half, seven to nothing, huff Huskies leaded
the second job. Second possession of the game for the

(54:56):
huff Huskies was it was finished off ethan Royal two
yard touchdown run. That is our only score here this
afternoon so far. It does look a bit like a
week one high school football game, and that there is
some messiness, There is some lack of organization. We have
seen some flags come on here, especially in the second quarter.
But business is picking up.

Speaker 5 (55:15):
Yeah, and whenever your left tackle, Anthony Baxter is the
South Carolina commit is getting more and more excited that
they're throwing the ball. You can tell that there's a
little bit of energy on the sideline because usually the
big guys, hey, let's run behind me. The two really
good throws there by McMillan. But the drive started with
five successful runs. And that's the identity that South Point
wants to create, is Hey, we want to run the.

Speaker 4 (55:37):
Ball, and we want to intimidate.

Speaker 5 (55:39):
We want to intimidate and pose our will against against
any oppotent even if it is Huff in this excellent
defensive line.

Speaker 4 (55:44):
And now we're seeing a little bit more tempo from South.

Speaker 3 (55:47):
Point, empty backfield, five wide receivers, three to the right
side of the formation, two to the far side, and
we've got early movement and flags flying in.

Speaker 4 (55:56):
Right there at.

Speaker 5 (55:56):
Midfield, Anthony Baxter is giving off Trent william vibes right now.

Speaker 4 (56:00):
Trent Williams, the big left tackle for San Francisco.

Speaker 5 (56:03):
He's yelling, he's yelling at the huff guys, He's yelling
at his own guys. He is clearly the captain on
this offensive line and really on this entire offense. Has
been kind of fun to watch him on this drive
as they're trying to gain some energy.

Speaker 3 (56:18):
Stay in a five wide formation, empty backfield, and McMillan
designed run, keeps it himself, lowers his shoulder at the
fifty yard line and crashes into a couple of Husky
defenders and brought down at the hof forty nine.

Speaker 5 (56:32):
You know, one of the things that I always think
is really good for quarterbacks that have got some athleticism
like McMillan does, is when the passing game isn't working.

Speaker 4 (56:39):
I like these quarterback runs.

Speaker 5 (56:41):
I think quarterbacks that have the running capability get into
better flow in the game when they're also running. I've
liked what Bobby Collins has done here, getting him a
little bit more in the action.

Speaker 4 (56:52):
Staying five wide, straight drop for McMillan.

Speaker 3 (56:54):
He's in trouble, pockets littered, and he is sacked at
the forty four yard line. At that time, it was
a melee, the pocket collapsing almost immediately JJ and McMillan
nowhere to go with the football.

Speaker 5 (57:10):
The senior Nathaniel Mitchell gets in there, but this was
this is one of the best pass rushers we've seen
all day. For Huff and uh and Mitchell gets in
there on a sack, but really that was a coverage sack.
You know, Samari Matthews had his man blanket and Zion
Murphy on the other side had there and there's just
no spots for McMillan to get anywhere on the field.
And then, of course you know that play goes three

(57:31):
to four seconds and the pocket begins to collapse.

Speaker 4 (57:34):
McMillan takes a sack.

Speaker 5 (57:35):
It's about the fifth time we've seen these four down
territories and the offense is going back. Either coach can
like this because they want to be aggressive, they want
to they want to avoid the punts here. So this
is setting up here with a minute fourteen left in
the first half, this is setting up for that one
minute drill.

Speaker 4 (57:51):
That we described here. We'll see what Huff chooses to do.

Speaker 5 (57:53):
They've got a seven to nothing lead, but South Point's
going to get the ball to start the second half,
and so you'd love to be able to maybe find
you way.

Speaker 4 (58:01):
Down into field goal range.

Speaker 5 (58:02):
So I'll be curious to see how how addresses this
punt do they try to go after This thing hasn't
been great punting so far. From from South Point or
you know, maybe maybe there's an opportunity here to get
a big one here at the end of the at
the end of the first half and try to take
this a two score game into lilftime.

Speaker 3 (58:22):
So it'll be fourth down and fourteen from the forty
six yard line. South Point had moved just into Hough
territory at the forty nine, but a six yard sack
moves the Stallions back to their own forty five and
that's where the ball is spotted as they get set
to punt it away again and number fifty two Caden

(58:42):
McClure it appears back to do the punting here for
South Point catches a clean snap line drive, spiraling punt
caught by number six Jaden White. White evades a pair
of defenders, runs back into trouble, the flag flies in
and White is tackled his own fifteen yard line.

Speaker 5 (59:01):
So McClure the punter a big offensive line hunter, which
is another great thing about high school football. After getting
off to a slow start, he's hit two bombs and
that was a big play because I think we're gonna
get some sort of holding or a illegal block in
the back downfield on huff. Uh, there's a few. Usually,
usually the guys will kind of give it away when.

Speaker 3 (59:21):
Well, while we wait, let's do this, let's pause ten
seconds for station identification.

Speaker 2 (59:27):
You were listening johns fnc FM, Harrisburg Hey w l
n A hd Flee Charlotte M.

Speaker 1 (59:33):
Bacon Holmes of that, Charlotte's point, Han.

Speaker 3 (59:39):
Kyle Bailey, JJ Jansen with you one oh three left
to go in the opening half huff leading south point
seven to nothing here and following a south Point punt,
a penalty flag flew in.

Speaker 4 (59:48):
JJ. What'd you say?

Speaker 5 (59:49):
Yeah, we got an legal block in the back there.
You have to keep teaching these guys again. This is
the second big kind of special teams blunder. When you're
in a trail position, meaning you're behind the guy you're
supposed to block, you need to peel off and go
find somebody else, because when those refs see you in
a trail position, anything that looks like you might hit
him in the back, they're gonna immediately throw that flag.

(01:00:11):
Josiah Lewis showing pressure there off the edge, first down
and ten from the seven yard line.

Speaker 4 (01:00:18):
Ethan Royle with a handoff, and.

Speaker 5 (01:00:22):
I imagine Huff's gonna be perfectly content here, having ninety
three yards ago with a minute left, and South Point
can't stop the clock with any timeout, so so Huff
is in no hurry here.

Speaker 4 (01:00:33):
They're not gonna have to pun if they don't want to.
So I imagine they're.

Speaker 5 (01:00:36):
Gonna run the clock out one or two more runs,
and all you're telling you guys in the huddle is, hey,
let's just end the play with the ball in our hands.

Speaker 3 (01:00:42):
Marvin Reid stopped after a loss of one, brings up
second down and eleven Reid back in the backfield, takes
to give again on second down and runs into five
South Point tacklers.

Speaker 4 (01:00:56):
You had Malik Ratliffe, CJ.

Speaker 3 (01:00:58):
Werry in right there, as well as number twenty three
Seth Tillman all there to make the stop. Clock stops
at seventeen seconds and now to roll again down to thirteen.
This will likely take us into the break and we
will not see another play here in the half. So

(01:01:18):
we go to the halftime with the Huff Huskies leading
this one seven to nothing. A two yard touchdown run
for Ethan Royal the lone scoring in the opening half
of the high school football season for each of these teams.
We'll talk about it when we come back. We'll give
our thoughts on the second half Game one of the
Keep Pounding High School Classic presented by BELK. Halfway home,

(01:01:40):
we'll talk about it next. Sports Radio ninety two seven WFNZ.

Speaker 2 (01:01:45):
You're listening to the twenty twenty five Keep Pounding High
School Classic. It's kind for the ufn Z Halftime Show
driven by Victory Chevrolet.

Speaker 1 (01:01:53):
Now back to the booth, Aaron, your hosts, Kyle Bailey
and JJ Jamson.

Speaker 4 (01:02:04):
At the time of.

Speaker 3 (01:02:04):
Game number one, the huff Huskies lead the South Point
Stallion seven to nothing with eleven minutes left to go
until second half action to Keep Pounding High School Classic
presented by Belk, back for another year. The Carolina Panthers
began this tradition a few years back and it's only
continued to grow, attracting the best programs in the state.

Speaker 4 (01:02:24):
The spotlight and feature the high school.

Speaker 3 (01:02:26):
Football programs in the state of North Carolina and in
this case, some of the best from South Carolina as well.
And tonight here in game number one, JJ, in that
first half, you said it very physical first half.

Speaker 5 (01:02:36):
Football, very physical first half. We did talk about it.
There's been some nerves, there's been some mistakes, which we'd
expect in any sort of game, but especially in this environment,
two really good teams, seventy five thousand seed stadium, under
the lights here is that it's beginning to get a
little bit darker here, and I think the pressure is
sort of building.

Speaker 4 (01:02:55):
Now.

Speaker 5 (01:02:55):
What I'd expect in the second half is, now this
feels like a real football game. Both teams have sort
of felt their way through the first half. I thought
we saw the best football from both teams in the
last six minutes or so of the second quarter, certainly
the most we saw from South Point. And what I
would imagine is this game would beginning to open up
a little bit more. But two really good defenses, a

(01:03:17):
ton of great athletes on the field, and both coaches
their identity is run the football and stop to run.
And that's basically what we've seen here through twenty four minutes.

Speaker 3 (01:03:25):
Yeah, I mean, Bobby Collins joked with us this could
be a ninety minute football game. We're not pacing for that, certainly,
but he has attempted to run the ball. But Huff's
defense has just been ferocious in the way that they're
hitting the way that they're swarming to the ball. We've
seen that repeatedly here tonight. So I mean, as is
the case with most football games that we tune into Friday,
Saturday or Sunday, the second half is all about adjustments.

Speaker 5 (01:03:47):
You know, the coaches in high school a little bit
different than maybe NFL. There's actually a little bit of
time to hey, let's go in and make a few adjustments.
So while the guys are in the locker room getting water,
orange slices, all the stuff that they've been doing since
peewee football, you got some coaches in there, you know,
beginning to say, hey, what's been working, what hasn't been working?
And what I'd really like to see from South Point
is can we find a way to throw the ball

(01:04:08):
a little bit more. It's going to be really hard
to run on this tough defense. They're front seven. We
talked about it, Will Berlin, Chris Hilliard, Ryan Peterson, L J.

Speaker 4 (01:04:15):
Porter. They are kind of controlling the line of scrimmage.

Speaker 5 (01:04:18):
They've got to find a way South Point does to
get the ball into the open field. And the last
two throws from Cameron mcmill and I thought were his
best two throws in the first half, after he'd run
the ball a little bit, gotten hit. Maybe maybe the
nerves are starting to calm down for him. They got
to find a way to get the ball in the
open space, because I don't think they can make much
of a living just running it into this tough defense.

Speaker 3 (01:04:39):
Yeah, that's what you just mentioned there a second ago.
You wondered about that coming into a game like this.
You know, these kids are human, and many of them
are playing at a venue like this for the first time.
It's already exciting to start your high school football season,
especially let's say if you're a senior and you're embarking
on your final campaign. But that first half, you'd have
to think these guys are all sorts of jacked up,
all kinds of emotional. So you know, you hope that

(01:05:01):
the second half of football can be a bit cleaner
and a bit more efficient.

Speaker 5 (01:05:04):
I always think you're gonna get a better brand of
football in the second half. It's not too hot. These
guys are probably not overly tired. Given the circumstances, They're
gonna come back through the tunnel.

Speaker 4 (01:05:14):
Halftime' is gonna look very normal to them.

Speaker 5 (01:05:16):
There's not gonna be any of the pomping circumstance that
you know, you know, Riley Fields and his group here
with the Carolina Panthers are putting on an awesome show.
My old teammate Trey Boston has been an awesome MC
down on the field.

Speaker 4 (01:05:27):
There's a lot of energy.

Speaker 5 (01:05:28):
But when they come back out for the second half,
we've got the bands on the field right now, they're
gonna be used to coming back and listening to the
bands as they're finishing up, and it's gonna look normal
to them coming into the second half, and I think
we'll get a little bit better brand of football coming
third quarter.

Speaker 3 (01:05:42):
Yeah, So just to emphasize how good the Hough defense
was there in the first half. By my count, quarterback
South Point quarterback Cameron McMillan has rushed for thirteen yards
in two point six yards per carry so far there
in the first half. So I'm here, Gordon Miles got
himself a couple of carries, but similar story, two point
three yards carry there in the first half, and McMillan
in the passing game only able to connect twice a

(01:06:05):
six yarder to Dalon Duncan early in the first half,
and then of course that fifteen yarder to Caden Vassel
that extended that final drive, though it didn't end in points.
They want to run the football, they want to be physical,
but they're gonna have to throw the football successfully in
the second half.

Speaker 5 (01:06:19):
At some point they're going to need to find something
someplace to go here. And what's interesting here for South
Point is we've been kind of a little bit tough
on their offense, but their defense is playing really well.

Speaker 4 (01:06:27):
They gave up the one drive.

Speaker 5 (01:06:28):
That ended with the two yard run by Royal, but
you know, they've forced a bunch of punts. There was
the special teams turnover that gave Huff another opportunity in
plus territory and it was a quick three and out
and they got the ball right back. So South Points
defense has been up for the task. We expected it.
Their front for Seth Tillman, Bryce Again, Miles Wilson, Josiah Lewis,

(01:06:48):
They've got some big offers Seth Tillman, a bunch of
SEC and acc offers. They've been up to the task.
They just got to find a way to get some
points because their defense has played really, really well here
in the first two quarters.

Speaker 4 (01:06:59):
No doubt about it.

Speaker 3 (01:07:00):
Bailey JJ Jansen ware with you here at the Victory
Chevrolet Halftime Show. Go to Victory Chevrolet dot com and
check out Brandon Gandhi's phenomenal selection of Chevy Silverado's.

Speaker 4 (01:07:11):
That's my favorite.

I'm driving one of those off his lot, but also
the Equinox to Blazer that traversed just nineteen dollars down,
could deliver any new Chevrolet really just nineteen dollars down.
Go check out the inventory at Victory Chevrolet dot com.
All right, officially, we've been handed the halftime stats here,
so we'll take a look at that and when we
come back, we'll gloss over it. We'll look at the

(01:07:32):
second half to come, and we'll talk about what will
happen between the Huff Huskies and the South Point Stallions
in game number one of the Keep Pounding High School
Classic presented by Bell.

Speaker 2 (01:07:43):
You are listening to that Keep Pounding High School Classic
on Sports Radio ninety two point seventy ufn Z.

Speaker 3 (01:07:57):
Live for Bank of America Stadium. It's the Keep Pounding
High School Classic twenty twenty five edition. Huff and South
Point at the half with about I we'll call it
five minutes left to go before second half kickoff the
Huskies with a seven to nothing advantage. A four yard
touchdown run from Ethan Royle the lone offensive production of

(01:08:18):
the first half for either team. Both teams headed by
former South Carolina State players and good friends former roommates
Bobby Collins and DeShawn Baker, and they've got one half
to go to decide who will start this season. One
to oh Kyle Bailey, JJ Jansen once again with you
bringing you the action along for the ride, and don't
forget that. Tonight, we've got Grimsley coming down from Greensboro

(01:08:38):
to take on the West Charlotte Lyons in game number
two of this double header. Between the games, you'll hear
from their head coaches, Darryl Brown and Sam Grinder, So
stick around, but the teams are back out on the
field here for the second half. You and I were
just taking a look at the official stats from just
down the way in the press box compared to our own.
Pretty similar stuff here, and it tells the exact same

(01:09:00):
story that you and I were telling there before the break.
Not a lot of production, and we're wondering if that
changes in the second half.

Speaker 5 (01:09:06):
Yeah, and what I've seen from South point, as we
said a few times, is their identity is they want
to run the football, and right now they're doing it,
but they're just not doing it very efficiently two or
three yards of carry.

Speaker 4 (01:09:19):
You wonder if there's.

Speaker 5 (01:09:19):
Maybe a change somewhere they got in the locker room
and say, hey, we've got to do something. I don't
know what that change might be quite yet, but they've
got to find a way to throw the ball because
they're not going to run the ball right now on
Huff between the tackles. They haven't done it all game,
and we really haven't seen even the start of like
a big play. So we'll see if maybe there's a
change in the locker room that we maybe we haven't

(01:09:42):
quite thought of yet. But as far as South Point goes,
that's what they need to do.

Speaker 4 (01:09:45):
Huff.

Speaker 5 (01:09:46):
You know, as much as they feel good in seven nothing,
if they're being honest with themselves, their offense hasn't done
a ton more. They have one hundred and twenty yards
on offense on twenty nine plays. They were really had
a little bit of an advantage from a play standpoint
with the special teams turnover, but you know, they weren't
able to convert that to points. And what I the
most impressive thing so far is Ethan Royalty's seven of eleven.

Speaker 4 (01:10:09):
He's got sixty six yards.

Speaker 5 (01:10:10):
He hasn't taken any sacks, and I think that's a
really big element. There's been a few broken plays where
he's turned a sack maybe into a first down run,
and he's been able to stay ahead of the chains.
It's giving them a few more opportunities. I'd really like
to see what Huff comes in the second half, because
they've got the lead. Are they gonna be able to
kind of keep their foot on the gas or to
south point, have something up their sleeve.

Speaker 3 (01:10:31):
Well, we'll find out, Huff in particular, the North Carolina
team this south point. This is not the south point
from Belmont, of course, this is the south point from
rock Hill, South Carolina. But here in North Carolina. Preseason
polls came out, of course the Observer always giving us
their Sweet sixteen, but also the Carolina's Top twenty five
preseason poll, which does include teams from both North and

(01:10:53):
South Carolina, and in that Carolina's preseason Top twenty five,
Huff came in at number six in this first edition
of the poll, and the South Point comes in at
number twelve, south Point eleven and three last year.

Speaker 4 (01:11:06):
Puff was twelve and two last season.

Speaker 3 (01:11:09):
So, as we've talked about throughout the course of this broadcast,
both of these very very proud programs, the South Point
Stallions building one of the premier high school football legacies
in South Carolina since opening back in two thousand and five,
and in less than two decades, the Stallions have claimed
seven state championships, including an incredible run of four straight

(01:11:29):
titles from twenty fourteen to twenty seventeen. And beyond the trophies,
South Point has earned national recognition for producing elite talent,
sending multiple players to the NFL, a list that includes
Jadeveon Clowney, the number one overall pick in twenty fourteen,
Stefan Gilmour, a Super Bowl champion and former NFL Defensive
Player of the Year, as well as current pro standsouts

(01:11:51):
like Darien Kendrick. And with that combination of tradition and
player development, South Point truly does embody rock Hill's reputation
as Football City USA. So we sit here in the
old North State, but we have listeners in rock Hill
that tune into w Wepenz every single day. So I
want to make sure those Stallions fans down there in
Football City, USA are hearing the love because football is

(01:12:14):
of the utmost importance down in rock Hill.

Speaker 4 (01:12:16):
JJ Jansen.

Speaker 5 (01:12:17):
Yeah, you know, this is such a cool environment here.
We got a North Carolina or South Carolina, a battle
for state lines.

Speaker 4 (01:12:25):
There's bragging rights.

Speaker 5 (01:12:26):
And as we talked to, you know, coach Baker with
Huff we talked about this a little bit earlier. He
was particularly annoyed that the South Carolina sort of deemed
as higher level football. And certainly when you have guys
like Jadavian Clowney and Stefan Gilmore coming from a school
like South Point, it's gonna get more attention. Shane Biemer
down there at South Carolina is recruited. Basically half these

(01:12:47):
guys are on this field today. There's a little energy
and there's a little juice around South Carolina football. And
certainly that was probably a little bit of an extra
motivation for coach Baker.

Speaker 4 (01:12:56):
Hey, let's show how good North Carolina football is.

Speaker 5 (01:12:58):
But what a cool matt for these guys and at
South Points getting ready to take to get the kickoff
here to start the second half. It's just a cool
extra rivalry to not only be in this particular game,
you know, in a big high school game versus great teams,
but also being able to have those state bragging rights.

Speaker 3 (01:13:16):
Yeah, Shane Biemer down at South Carolina. As I mentioned
earlier in the broadcast, I extended the invitation to get
him up here on the booth tonight if he were
going to be in attendance to watch some of his commits.

Speaker 4 (01:13:25):
But Shane's a little busy.

Speaker 3 (01:13:27):
Nine days from now, he'll be in Atlanta taking on
his alma mater, Virginia Tech in the AFLAC kickoff game
down there at Mercedes Benz Stadium. So Dave Cox football
looking for a big year this year, led by Lagora Sellis.
Here we go, second half action moments away. South Point
will get the football.

Speaker 5 (01:13:51):
I've never seen a kicker put on gloves to kick off,
which is part of high school athletics.

Speaker 4 (01:13:55):
Just checking that myself.

Speaker 3 (01:13:56):
It's number twelve Jonah Holloway with a high end, over
end kick caught by number eight Caden Watkins, who brings
it out from the eight yard line.

Speaker 4 (01:14:05):
Watkins swarmed immediately.

Speaker 3 (01:14:08):
And dropped at the thirteen yard line a return of
about five yards for Dalon Duncan.

Speaker 5 (01:14:14):
So we had two really good kickoffs so far here
from Huff and the first one to put Watkins in
the corner and he was able to bring it out
to about the forty seven. But the value of those
corner kicking guys is that you can kind of pin
him in and right there we saw it with Watkins.
There was no place to go, only able to get
the ball out to the thirteen yard line, and we wondered, hey,

(01:14:35):
would there be a change for South Point? Well, there
is quarterback now is Javian Courage. Remember the Sunday guy
is Now he's moved from wide receiver to quarterback and
maybe that.

Speaker 4 (01:14:48):
Was the mid mid game change that they were looking
for here.

Speaker 3 (01:14:52):
So Jzavian currents, we'll take the reins of the offense
here in the second half, designed keeper off, he goes
around the right side across the twenty yard line and
tripped up. He falls forward to the twenty three and
an immediate first down. Jazavian Currents giving a current if
you will, to the South Point offense to start the

(01:15:12):
second half.

Speaker 5 (01:15:13):
Well, you know this is Bobby Collins. He said, Hey,
this is my Sunday guy. Of all the great players,
I've got the South Carolina commit, Jazavian Currence is he's
clearly at the top of Bobby Collins list. And when
the offense is struggling, let's just get the ball right
in the guy's hands immediately. And so he's gonna take
the snaps right now.

Speaker 3 (01:15:30):
Four wide receivers, two to each side. It's a handoff
on first down. Did the ball come loose? No, that
was just a jolt of volume in by headset. Got
me excited there for a second.

Speaker 5 (01:15:42):
Sincere Brewster fifty one the dtackle for huff In on
the plane again. There is no running right now on
this tough defense, especially between the tackles. I'd like to
continue to see South Point begin to spread it out
now they've.

Speaker 4 (01:15:54):
Put in Currents into the game.

Speaker 5 (01:15:56):
He's a wide receiver, he's an athlete, he plays safety,
he does a little bit of everything. Watched him warm
up here at the beginning of the second half. He
can throw it. I'd like to see them get the
ball on the outside. There's nothing inside against tough.

Speaker 3 (01:16:07):
Currents takes the snap as a mere Gordon Miles next
to him. Currents turns it deep turns it loose rather
deep down the near side. Lag catch is made near midfield,
first down south point number three, Cayden Vassal going up
to make the grab.

Speaker 5 (01:16:20):
That was a really great individual played by Cayden Vassal.
This is supposed to be a long throw down the
outside and right as he's thrown fifty one sincere Brewster
hits Currents and then the ball's just up for grabs
and Vassal comes back to the ball, makes it a
twenty five yard gain along his own sideline. He just
high points it and wins the battle over number three
Jackson Heath.

Speaker 3 (01:16:40):
How about the jolt Jesavian Currents has given to this
offense right away?

Speaker 4 (01:16:48):
Is that play whistled dead?

Speaker 5 (01:16:49):
Looks like we may have had an illegal snap false start.
The official did not say who was the guilty party
if that was one of those false start on everybody.
The ball was kind of rolling around, everyone was moving.
It's sometimes it's easier just to say fall started and

(01:17:10):
move on to the next play. But what an unbelievable
play right there by Katon Vassel. He's expecting this ball
to be fifty yards downfield and the quarterback Currents gets
hit it hit. As he throws, he finds it, comes
back and tracks it and turns it into an unbelievable
individual effort.

Speaker 3 (01:17:25):
Current's in the gun again. Balls on the near side
Hash they're moving right to left. Currents had to get
rid of it a bit earlier than he had wanted to,
and it's incomplete intended for number nine Dylan Duncan on
an in cutting route, and that play had potential, but
Current's probably turned it loose and nick too early.

Speaker 5 (01:17:41):
Chris Hilliard there causing pressure on the inside and again
even as you're trying to throw the ball.

Speaker 4 (01:17:47):
This Huff defense is all in the backfield.

Speaker 5 (01:17:51):
Chris Hilliard is the Temple commit that's playing a D
tackle here for Huff. He's able to probably turn what
might have been a big play, could have even been
a touchdown an inbreak route, turns it into a incompletion.

Speaker 4 (01:18:02):
One of the challenges of a great D line.

Speaker 3 (01:18:04):
Second down in fifteen from their own forty two, here's
Currents in south point, flushed out of the pocket, rolling right.
He's gonna tuck it and go fighting for the forty
five yard line, and that's where he's tackled. After a
gain of two that'll bring up third down and long
for the Stallions.

Speaker 4 (01:18:20):
Second.

Speaker 5 (01:18:20):
Really nice play by Jason Wilkerson. He had the pass
deflection earlier in the game, this time coming out of
the the post safety and is able to keep Currents
in front of him.

Speaker 4 (01:18:28):
Best athlete on the field.

Speaker 5 (01:18:29):
He has great leverage, makes a tackle with his right
shoulder as the rest of his guys are coming from
inside out. He cuts off the play from getting to
the sideline and turns what could have been a really
big play on a scramble drill into a one yard game.

Speaker 3 (01:18:42):
And now you're in third and thirteen. Three ride receivers
to the near side. It's Watkins, Duncan and Malik Ratliffe.
Here's Currents dropping. He's got all day to throw over
the middle. Catches made by the number one Malik Ratliffe,
who found himself wide open at about the forty six

(01:19:04):
yard line of huff. He makes the catch and immediately
hits the turf. So we're into four down territory. It's
fourth and three into plus territory.

Speaker 5 (01:19:11):
But what you've seen here in the first four or
five plays of this quarter is Currents feels really comfortable
throwing the ball and he's throwing some heartbreaking, our hard
throws into the inside of the coverage with a lot
of confidence. Everyone looking into the sideline to get a
play here. Big fourth and three and another time out?

Speaker 4 (01:19:33):
How about that?

Speaker 3 (01:19:36):
Another time out taken by Bobby Collins and South Point
first time out taken of behalf. He burned all three
in the first half, used his final one with about
four minutes and fifty seconds left to go. So Bobby
Collins not shy about using his timeouts when he needs them.

Speaker 5 (01:19:51):
Yeah, and this is obviously one of those times where
it's such a big play.

Speaker 4 (01:19:54):
We want to convert here.

Speaker 5 (01:19:55):
If you're South Point, you're in that huddle right now,
just outside of their bench.

Speaker 4 (01:19:59):
Air fourth and three. This is a really big play.

Speaker 5 (01:20:02):
But we talked about they needed something in the locker
room to kind of change the flow of the game,
and coach Bobby Collins has gone to Jesse Avian.

Speaker 4 (01:20:10):
Currents and put him back there.

Speaker 5 (01:20:11):
And what I've seen so far is they felt more
comfortable spreading this out. Currents can run a little bit,
He's had two nice runs on this drive. But the
confidence that he's had throwing the ball in breaking routes,
it's the best spot on the field to throw the ball,
but it's also dangerous and you've got to be able
to throw that ball with confidence. And that's the third
throw so far for Currents in the first half where

(01:20:32):
he's whipping it in there. As a as a quarterback coach,
as a play caller, when you see your quarterback hit
his back foot turn and rip it to the middle
of the field with a lot of authority, you're saying
to yourself, Hey, this guy has a lot of confidence.
I feel better about fourth and three is going forward
and just putting the ball in his hand in a
big moment in the game.

Speaker 4 (01:20:52):
This has been a good start for South Point, best.

Speaker 3 (01:20:54):
Drive of the day so far for the Stallions. No
doubt about that fourth down and three upcoming from the
forty six yard line of the huff Huskies Stallions in
plus territory.

Speaker 4 (01:21:04):
We've not said that often today.

Speaker 3 (01:21:06):
And Bobby Collins will roll the dice here, five wide receivers,
empty backfield, three receivers to the near side. Currents takes
the shotgun snap, no doubt about it. He's running a
football and he's gonna come up short. The hoff defense
does it again and Jazavian currents ran right into traffic
and never had a chance.

Speaker 5 (01:21:23):
And as complimentary as we were there on that first
opening drive, I hate that play call.

Speaker 4 (01:21:28):
It's fourth and three.

Speaker 5 (01:21:29):
They spread everything out and it's not there's no draw,
there's no deception. It's just running quarterback Iso right up
the middle, which is the one place on this tough defense.

Speaker 4 (01:21:39):
I would say, do not go there anymore.

Speaker 5 (01:21:41):
Do not run the ball between Wilberlin, Tristan Bennett, Chris
Hilliard and Sincere Brewster, don't do it.

Speaker 4 (01:21:47):
We've seen that about seven times a day.

Speaker 5 (01:21:49):
I don't know if we've had more than two yards
of carry on any of those runs.

Speaker 3 (01:21:53):
And the south Point offensive lineman there, Caden Cathcart, when
they go back and watch the film on that play
in particular, probably gonna close his eyes. The right guard
Whift on a block that might have sprung Jazavian currents
right there. But you credit the Huff defensive line because
they've been active all night.

Speaker 5 (01:22:07):
They've been active all night, both both as pass rushers
and as run stoppers. But I would put a big
X on any plays right now that go between the
tackles if I'm south Point.

Speaker 4 (01:22:16):
Huff's been excellent in the front four.

Speaker 3 (01:22:19):
So Ethan Royal and the Husky offense back out there
for the first time here in the second half, and
without a play being run, they pick up their first
penalty flag.

Speaker 5 (01:22:31):
So this is the second or third time this has happened.
And I always got a big kick out of high
school games. They wait for nobody.

Speaker 4 (01:22:37):
So everyone was on the sideline, Both teams were on
the sideline.

Speaker 5 (01:22:40):
That play clock started. By the time everyone got out
there was at four. Like no everyone was. Everyone was
on the sideline and the play clock was almost out.

Speaker 3 (01:22:49):
So now first down in fifteen from the thirty nine,
here's Royal pressure in his face, throws across the middle,
nobody home and a flag comes in.

Speaker 4 (01:22:59):
How about the arm on the side of the line.

Speaker 3 (01:23:01):
Judge there from the twenty five yard line, hurls that
thing to midfield, and I think he's.

Speaker 4 (01:23:05):
Gonna get a holding penalty.

Speaker 5 (01:23:06):
Somewhere in the secondary, My guess is everyone's kind of
on the dvs me. Are you pointing at me? He
didn't out anybody. It looked like it might have been
on Zamir Gordon in the secondary, or Malik Ratliffe who

(01:23:26):
plays wide receiver and he's a corner as well. But yeah,
referees like to chuck those flags now, they like to
show off their armor. So you get this back judge
here at about the twenty five yard line. He threw
that a good twenty five to thirty yards all the
way to midfield to emphatically call the defensive holding.

Speaker 3 (01:23:43):
All right, So from first and fifteen to first and five,
new line of scrimmage, the forty nine yard line for
Huff and another flag three for three.

Speaker 4 (01:23:51):
How about that some.

Speaker 3 (01:23:52):
Sloppiness here to open the second half. All of that
to get back to the original down and distance false
start on Huff. So from first and ten to first
and fifteen to first and five, now first and ten again.

Speaker 4 (01:24:06):
We didn't need to do any of the last three
plays for all the way back in the beginning.

Speaker 3 (01:24:09):
Here eight twenty five on the clock, third quarter, keep
pounding high school class at game number one, seven to nothing.

Speaker 4 (01:24:16):
Huff Husky's leaded.

Speaker 3 (01:24:17):
Huff's quarterback Ethan Royle, who's standing out there in the
shotgun formation right now, responsible for the only touchdown so
far today, a four yard run in the first half.
This time, sets his feet and delivers a strike over
the middle on targets to number two Caden Hornsby, but
Hornsby couldn't hang on incomplete.

Speaker 4 (01:24:34):
It's a good throw.

Speaker 5 (01:24:35):
Those one of the first times we've really just seen
Ethan Royal be allowed to drop back, set his feet
and rip it. And it's a really good throw on
a quick kind of inbreaking route to Hornsby, and.

Speaker 4 (01:24:47):
Felt like he could probably go two hands there, chose
to go with one. It kind of glances off of
his arm.

Speaker 5 (01:24:52):
But he but but Royle really hit his back foot
and ripped it. You know, he's been kind of touted
as having all the armslots, so it's really good for
the wide re hever screens and the quick triggers and
the awkward throws. But that was the first time he
hit his back foot and ripped it. It was a good throw.

Speaker 3 (01:25:06):
Just missed Ethan Royal seven of twelve in the game
as he fumbles his snap and South Point gets on
it turn over. That's the break the Stallions have been
looking for, and we'll see if they could capitalize. Number thirteen,
Josiah Lewis, the defensive lineman, was there as Ethan Royle
couldn't handle the snap, the ball got free and Lewis
pounces on it big swing in momentum right here in

(01:25:29):
this ball game.

Speaker 5 (01:25:30):
And it was a wild snap from the center to
a to on a tua that was a mouthful, that
was really tough. But the balls out to the right
there of Ethan Royle. And this happens a lot with quarterbacks.
They are such good ball handlers when they get a
wild snap, they are so used to just sticking their
hand out because ninety nine times out of one hundred,

(01:25:50):
it sticks in their hand that one glances off and
just Josiah Lewis just happens to be the guy that
falls right in front of Currents.

Speaker 3 (01:25:57):
Back out with the Stallions offense first and ten for
the thirty six of hoff Hoff. Currents takes a shot
at the end of that play, taking off his feet,
but bounces right back up.

Speaker 4 (01:26:09):
He picks up four on the play. Wow.

Speaker 5 (01:26:12):
South Point is determined to run the ball inside and
Currents got through. And then and then Micah Bright came
out of the post safety area and absolutely a licking
on Currents.

Speaker 4 (01:26:22):
I don't think you want him taking.

Speaker 5 (01:26:24):
A lot of those in the middle of the action
shots on the outside that you don't worry about it
as much.

Speaker 4 (01:26:29):
But that was a lick as hard as hit as
we've seen all day.

Speaker 3 (01:26:32):
Second and six from the thirty two. It's a handoff
to Zamir Gordon Miles and he is gobbled up by
the Husky defense and dropped for a loss of a yard.

Speaker 5 (01:26:43):
So the one of the issues that I think is
happening right now for South Point is they want to
be a split zone running team.

Speaker 4 (01:26:49):
What that means is they're trying to get all their offensive.

Speaker 5 (01:26:52):
Linemen kind of working in one direction with double teams,
and then they're trying to bring somebody back across the
line of scrimmage to sort of create a hole.

Speaker 4 (01:27:00):
Will all of those plays.

Speaker 5 (01:27:02):
Hit in between the tackles, and that's the highlight of
the Hoff defense. So we've seen about nine or ten
plays on the interior. I don't know if one's gone
for more than about three or four yards all day,
and maybe four yards at most. Whatever's in their game
plan to get the ball on the outside.

Speaker 4 (01:27:19):
I think it's the only place to really move the ball.

Speaker 5 (01:27:22):
Of course, now I say that there'll be a big
run right in the middle, but there's just not a
lot of room inside.

Speaker 3 (01:27:27):
Versus huff empty set five wide receivers. Here comes the
blitz from Huff Stallion's offensive line, trying to buy time
for Currents. Currents buys some himself, turns it loose, and
it's knocked away incomplete. Number seven. Micah Bright in coverage
chasing number eight Caden Watkins, Bryce gets a or Bright
rather gets a hand on it and knocks it away.

Speaker 4 (01:27:49):
South Point did a really nice job there.

Speaker 5 (01:27:50):
Kayden Cathart, the right guard picked up the blitz five
on five and really bought a lot of time for Currents.
Currents kind of drifted to his left towards his sideline
and really allowed his offense of receivers to kind of
find open spaces. There just wasn't any great coverage by
Samari Heath and jack Are Samari Matthews and Jackson Heath.
Now we got a four down territory. It's fourth and

(01:28:10):
seven and this is a big play here.

Speaker 3 (01:28:12):
Fourth and seven from the thirty three no man's land
four down territory in the Stallions they need points and
Bobby Collins rolling the dice again.

Speaker 4 (01:28:21):
Here, here's Currents over the.

Speaker 3 (01:28:22):
Middle has a man catch made at the fourteen yard line.
It's some jawing after the fact Dalon Duncan making the
catch number eleven Jason Wilkerson in coverage, but a big
play for the Stallion offense.

Speaker 4 (01:28:35):
Sets up first and ten. Big play there, and.

Speaker 5 (01:28:38):
It's just a little post route about fifteen yards down
the field. You know, Duncan starts on the numbers, breaking
towards the middle of field, and I actually thought Currents
could kind of rip it in there. He decided to
put a little air under it and Duncan went up
and made a nice grab while the defender was sort
of hanging on him.

Speaker 4 (01:28:53):
A really nice play by Duncan and a big conversion there.

Speaker 3 (01:28:56):
Into the red zone. Goes to Stallions on first and ten.
It's a handoff right up the gut to number twenty
eight ray Sean Brown, and Brown picks up three.

Speaker 4 (01:29:06):
They are determined to run between the top they are.

Speaker 5 (01:29:09):
I would like to think somewhere in their play calls
there is some run that goes outside the tackles.

Speaker 4 (01:29:16):
I haven't seen one yet.

Speaker 5 (01:29:17):
But the best thing that right now South points doing
is because Currents is throwing the ball well, they're converting
some of these third downs and the fourth down we
just had, so that's kind of the area I don't
know why they keep beating their head against the wall,
but current has done a nice job keeping them in.

Speaker 3 (01:29:33):
On this first drive, Currents takes the snap and the
gun fakes the handoff, running right side and cut down
after a loss of two yards. At the original lone
of scrimmage, he had RJ. Brown and they had RJ.
Brown to one side and ray Sean Brown to the other.
The brothers Brown getting some time together here. Always fun

(01:29:57):
to see brothers playing together at the high school level.
A time out taken here by South Point and with
five and a half minutes left to go here in
the third quarter, Bobby Collins has already used two of
his second half timeouts.

Speaker 4 (01:30:10):
Someone needs a telling they don't give you more when
he uses them all. He's using them all here.

Speaker 5 (01:30:13):
But this is a big down, so I think this
is a really important time. Let's figure out what we
want to do. Coach said, hey, we haven't actually seen
a field goal team come out yet, but he said, hey, Mike,
my kicker chan Edwards he's good from about thirty yards
loss and Miller did the kicking off it to start
the game. We'll see who comes out for the first kick.
If we get one. But this is about their range,

(01:30:34):
you know. Bobby said, Hey, we're probably a thirty yard
field goal kicking team, maybe thirty five from right here,
it would be about a thirty two yard field goal.
So I think the conversation begins, Hey, are we treating
this play right now as hey we need to convert
because we're willing to kick a field goal or are.

Speaker 4 (01:30:50):
We in four down territory?

Speaker 5 (01:30:51):
And that will begin to sort of determine how are
we treating this play now.

Speaker 4 (01:30:56):
Currents has thrown the ball really well in third and long.

Speaker 5 (01:30:58):
And fourth and long, So I think you can take
two shots of getting a first down from here, and
if it doesn't work, you know, you take a sack
or something. You can go for it again or even
or even maybe kick a field goal. But this is
the most life we've seen it from South Point, and
they've looked really good on this first drive. I think
you gotta find a way to come away with points
here unless you get into fourth and short. I like

(01:31:20):
the idea of a field goal because the way this
is going back and forth, ten points might win this
game the way the play has been so far through
two and.

Speaker 3 (01:31:28):
A half quarters, Jasevian Currents at quarterback for the Stallions.
He's a South Carolina game Cock commit, likely going to
play in the defensive secondary, but he's the quarterback here
in the second half and he's got a lane to run,
galloping up the middle. Touchdown, Stallions put six on the board.
Jasevian Currents has breathed new life into the south Point
offense here in the second half.

Speaker 4 (01:31:49):
What a big drive there for south Point.

Speaker 5 (01:31:53):
So they went into they went in the locker room
and they had zero life.

Speaker 4 (01:31:57):
They come out the kickoff, they get pin back.

Speaker 5 (01:32:00):
They just go eighty seven yards in about ten to
twelve plays.

Speaker 4 (01:32:05):
Currents was the man all the.

Speaker 5 (01:32:06):
Way up and down and we get you know, on
third and ten they spread everybody out and this time
they run through the middle. But it was with quarterback draw.
There's a little bit of deception that just changes the timing.
And what a big drive for South Point and jose
Avian Currents.

Speaker 4 (01:32:21):
How about that.

Speaker 3 (01:32:22):
Here's lost in miller on for the pat to kick
us up and it's good seven seven with five point
twenty five left.

Speaker 4 (01:32:30):
To go in the third quarter.

Speaker 3 (01:32:32):
We've got a flag on the field at the end
of the point after a scuffle on the field and
big number seventy five for South Point Anthony Baxter jawing
at the huff sideline and being restrained by his teammates.
We'll have to wait and see what the penalty is here.

Speaker 5 (01:32:49):
I'm telling you he's given Trent Williams vibes and what again,
I said this in the first half. What I mean
by that is you need somebody on the offensive line.
That's the energy setter, that's the enforcer.

Speaker 4 (01:32:59):
You don't want flat.

Speaker 5 (01:33:00):
I'm sure coach Bobby Collins down there give him in
the earful. We can't have penalties and personal fouls, but
every quarterback, every team needs somebody on the offensive line
to set the tone.

Speaker 3 (01:33:16):
There you go the aforementioned Anthony Baxter unnecessary roughness run
sportsman like the fifteen yard penalty will be assessed.

Speaker 4 (01:33:22):
On the kickoff.

Speaker 5 (01:33:23):
Okay, so coach Piember, we got to coach that out
of him. But other than that, he's bringing a ton
of energy to the field. He was the guy we
talked about in the second quarter, like, hey, we've got
some energy and flowing beginning to get some juice into
the huddle air for South Point. But what a drive
there by South Point and jes Avian Currents.

Speaker 4 (01:33:41):
The ball was in his hand at every critical moment.

Speaker 5 (01:33:44):
And on that third and ten there where you and
I are talking about, Hey, is this four down territory?
Three down territory, Bobby, Bobby Collins says, Hey, I'm gonna
leave the ball in the hands of my best player.

Speaker 4 (01:33:53):
He's my best athlete.

Speaker 5 (01:33:55):
And the offensive line really came up big, especially in
the pass protection. They picked up a big blitz and
they're able to turn that draw play. Get five hats
on five hats and it was a walk in touchdown.

Speaker 4 (01:34:06):
Parted like the Red Sea.

Speaker 3 (01:34:08):
How about that seven plays, thirty six yards a touchdown
for South Point capped off by a fourteen yard touchdown
run by Jesavian Currents. As we told you when the
broadcast began, Shane Beemer and South Carolina, the game Cocks
have a ton of commits on the field across this
game and the next one. Currents is headed to Columbia
next year. As I mentioned, likely as a defender, as

(01:34:29):
a safety, measuring it at six three, two ten. They're
excited about his ability there. But tonight Bobby Collins and
the Stallions are depending upon him to try to win
their opener here against the Huff Huskies, and now South Point,
we'll tee up the football to kick it back to
Huff fifteen yards deeper than normal after the penalty. Here's

(01:34:50):
Lawson Miller ball teed up at the twenty five Huff
for turn men standing roughly at their own twenty five,
and there's Christian Carter making the grab. The twenty six
makes a man miss cuts back to the middle of
the field, up the near side, hash across the forty
and out to the forty five yard line. Tremendous starting
field position for the Huff Huskies.

Speaker 4 (01:35:10):
So one downside of the penalty.

Speaker 5 (01:35:12):
There on the pat from Anthony Baxter's good kickoff, but
instead of that ball being back at the ten or
eight yard line, it only travels to the twenty five
and a solid return gets you close to midfield.

Speaker 4 (01:35:22):
So this is the first time Huff's really been threatened.

Speaker 5 (01:35:24):
Right, all the momentum has switched over to the south
Point sideline because their offense feels sort of fixed after
that first drive, and Huff had one really good drive
but again four punts in the first half as well, So.

Speaker 4 (01:35:37):
Ethan Royle needs to find.

Speaker 5 (01:35:38):
A way to drive them down and get some points
on this drive to sort of answer what South Point
just just pulled off there in the first and their
first drive in the second half.

Speaker 3 (01:35:47):
So the Huskies take over at their own forty six
on the near side, hash moving left to right, empty backfield,
five wide receivers, three to the top of the formation,
two to the bottom. Here's Royal gets it out quickly
finds Christian Carter across midfield, and he battles his way
inside the forty five down to the forty four yard

(01:36:07):
line of the Stallions, but another penalty flag flies.

Speaker 5 (01:36:12):
Something in the backfield there looks like Huff's moving forward,
so they think it's definitely on south Point.

Speaker 3 (01:36:26):
Bryce and gain the guilty culprit guilty party rather that
time unnecessary roughness roughing the passer Ethan Royle taking a
shot there at the end of that play. So after
a big pickup or a nice game rather for the
Husky offense, tack on fifteen more.

Speaker 5 (01:36:44):
And coach Bobby Collins cannot be happy with his South
Point team right now. A lot of penalties two personal
fouls in the last three players really cost him. Already
inside the thirty yard line, for Huff, So a.

Speaker 3 (01:36:57):
Ten yard pass play extended by an additional fifteen. It's
the second grab of the night for Carter. He's up
to twenty five yards receiving. Here's Royal on first and
ten from the twenty nine, swings it out. Wide, catches
made and that'll be a game of about five yards.

Speaker 5 (01:37:16):
Little wide receiver screen out to the left there to
Cayden Hornsby. It's a three over two. So you've got
three receivers. You've got two dbs out there. Let's throw.

Speaker 4 (01:37:26):
Let's get the ball out and let the wide receivers block.

Speaker 5 (01:37:29):
A nice job kind of rallying, rallying the troops, Samir,
Gordon Miles got to the ball. A few other guys
kind of rallying to the pile there. But it's an
extended run. We're gonna throw. Throw the ball to the
sideline and get five yards and get in the second
and managible.

Speaker 4 (01:37:42):
My play was blocked up well, throw is a little
off target.

Speaker 3 (01:37:45):
Here's a deep shot to the far corner of the
end zone, but can't haul it in. That looks like
Tyron Evans in the back of the end zone. He
pops up looking for a flag. Nice throw by Ethan Royle,
but Evans couldn't complete the play.

Speaker 5 (01:37:58):
So really good throw. And once again again when Royals
seen single coverage, especially on his Miami commit Tyron Evans,
he's throwing the ball up and this is look we.

Speaker 4 (01:38:08):
Just saw the replay in the booth.

Speaker 5 (01:38:09):
Tyron Evans has every reason to believe he was passing, interfered,
gets pushed right in the back there by Kayden Watkins
on the other side, and the ref's just kind of
blinded to it, but as a good, quick, sort of
late push and it was probably the reason why that
ball wasn't completed. But that's the third time now Ethan

(01:38:30):
Royle has found Tyron Evans on single coverage and thrown
them a go ball.

Speaker 3 (01:38:35):
Four oh four left to go in the third quarter,
tie ball, game seven apiece, third down and six, it's
a handoff to Condon Tennis and Tennis pushed out to
the sideline, rought out of bounds, not much doing. They're
on third down for the Huskies.

Speaker 5 (01:38:52):
Well, and you see sort of a third you just say,
why are they running on third and eight? Well, they're
in that sort of no man's land as you called
it earlier, which I think is really important in high
school football. They were hoping that's a four down territory.
But instead of third and seven turning into fourth and two,
it goes to fourth and nine. And now this is
a big throw, very similar to the situation South Point

(01:39:14):
had just a few moments ago.

Speaker 4 (01:39:16):
A fourth and long.

Speaker 5 (01:39:17):
Can't kick a field goal, certainly aren't gonna punt, and
now it's gonna be in Ethan Royle's hands to try
to find an open receiver. And once again we're getting
the time out because this is a big play. But
once again I was curious if they were gonna snap
that ball because Tyron Evans was in one on one
coverage at the top of the at the top of
the field there, and I thought this would be another
opportunity to get him the ball.

Speaker 3 (01:39:36):
How about that, Kyle Bailey, JJ Janssen, with you here
to keep pounding. High School Classic twenty twenty five edition,
Game number one. It hasn't been pretty, nor has it
been high scoring, but it has been physical and hard fought.
Seven to seven year score, fourth down and nine from
the twenty eight yard line coming up for Huff and
I looked down at my stat sheet. ConA tennis who

(01:39:57):
got that carry a moment ago. It went for negative
three yards and a back that you know they're very
excited about at Huffin figures to have a standout season
just given what we know about his abilities. He's sitting
at three yards rushing on the day, and I think
that says everything about the way this game is gone.

Speaker 5 (01:40:12):
This game has been really muddy between the tackles. There's
been a little bit more space on the outside. But
as we said in the halftime show, doesn't it feel
like the game sort of opened up a little bit.
Everyone seems to have calmed down. This looks like what
we would expect from two of the top teams in
the Carolinas. It looks a little bit more natural. And

(01:40:33):
there's something to be said for coming into a big
environment like this in Bank of America Stadium and the
key pounding Classic and having to navigate the nerves of
the first half. And now we're getting some really good
football and another big fourth down play and Currents made
it work on his first drive.

Speaker 4 (01:40:48):
Let's see if Royle can respond here on a big
fourth down.

Speaker 3 (01:40:52):
Three seventeen on the clock, Royal sends a man in motion.
That's number six Jayden White across the formation, handles to
high snap pump fakes, tucks it running up the middle,
cut down at the twenty five yard line, well short
of the first down, a turnover on downs, and south
Point will get the football back.

Speaker 5 (01:41:14):
And a shot of life again on the south Point sideline.
So they've dominated the third quarter. Here they go into
basically what turns into spread. Five receivers are out in
the route concept and they kind of force the pocket
and Royal steps up and the problem was there wasn't
a lot of place to run. But it's fourth and
nine five yards does not do a lot free. I

(01:41:34):
would have liked for him to climb the pocket, get
near the line of scrimmage and either an arm fake
or or wait and find someone sort of breaking free.
Just ran right into two defenders and they turn the
ball over on downs here at the twenty five yard line.

Speaker 3 (01:41:48):
We've seen that a couple of times tonight out comes
Josevion Currents the second half quarterback Cameron McMillan getting to
start in this game. The offense struggled in the first half.
Bobby Collins has made a change in the second half
and it's worked out so far. Current it's evading pressure,
rolling to his right, throwing on the run but off target.
Looking for number nine Dalan Duncan, who was sprinting to

(01:42:09):
the far sideline, ran out a room and that goes incomplete.

Speaker 5 (01:42:14):
Really good job there by the Hugh defense kind of
forcing the pressure up the middle. You know the primary
guys on that Hugh defense, Chris Hilliard, wil Berlin.

Speaker 4 (01:42:25):
Forcing a lot of pressure right now.

Speaker 5 (01:42:28):
But the difference has been here in the second half,
Currents will be able to kind of handle it, work
out of the pocket and evade the rush.

Speaker 3 (01:42:34):
And here's a run on second down and ten. It's
number four RJ. Brown picks up a handful that'll bring
up third down and six from the stallion twenty nine
yard line.

Speaker 4 (01:42:49):
South Point's kind of looking to the sideline.

Speaker 5 (01:42:51):
The big equalizer here so far in the third quarter
has been Currents. He doesn't have to throw the ball
to be effective. He's run, he's thrown, He's throwing with
a lot of confidence. Let's see what they do here.
On a third medium, moving right.

Speaker 3 (01:43:02):
To left from the far side, Hash Currents whips it
near side, complete first down catch made by number three
Caden Vassel and Currents knew exactly where he was going
with the football at that time. Set his speed, quickly
rifled it back across the middle and the south point
Stallions get a fresh set of downs.

Speaker 5 (01:43:20):
The offensive line is really held up well in pass
protection there. They bring five, they block five. Then you
have a little three man concept and just kind of
find the soft spot in the zone. Vassal has done
a really nice job kind of working the interior of
the route concepts today.

Speaker 4 (01:43:34):
Kind of makes himself very quarterback friendly, what do I mean?

Speaker 5 (01:43:37):
Finds a soft spot in the zone, faces up and currents,
hits them right right on the number three there and
an easy passing completion for a first down.

Speaker 3 (01:43:45):
First and ten from the thirty eight. It's a handoff
back to RJ. Brown and once again the huff Husky
run defense there to make things difficult for him drop
for no gain.

Speaker 5 (01:43:58):
Jason Wilkerson's keeps showing going up in the run game,
especially out of that safety spot.

Speaker 4 (01:44:02):
That's about the fourth time we've said his name.

Speaker 5 (01:44:04):
It's really good for a run defense when when you've
got safeties showing up the box and hitting as hard
as as the Hugh safeties have hit so far today.

Speaker 3 (01:44:16):
Second and ten from the thirty eight near side, hash
two backs in the backfield. Currents fakes the give, runs
around the left side, leaps over one of his offensive linemen,
and tumbles out to the forty five yard line. That's
a pickup of seven four Currents Anthony Watkins with a
big block. They're number seventy five. We talked about it
kind of clearing out number four l J. Porter at

(01:44:39):
the second level. And I'm just having a really good.

Speaker 5 (01:44:42):
Time watching him on the offensive line. Every time he's
hit somebody, he has let them know that he hit him,
and he hit him hard.

Speaker 3 (01:44:51):
Just Avian Currents up to forty seven yards rushing here
in this game, and there's a flag and it's like that,
I'll go against the huff defense encroachment five yard penalty
on third and three. That'll move the Stallions up five
yards and it's an automatic first down. I have a

(01:45:12):
new line of scrimmage the fifty yard line.

Speaker 4 (01:45:14):
The energy's really changing this game, hasn't it? Sure has? Yeah.
We wondered at halftime would something change? Was their scheme?

Speaker 5 (01:45:23):
Switch ended up being a switch a quarterback, which is
pretty common.

Speaker 4 (01:45:26):
When you're looking for new energy on an offense.

Speaker 3 (01:45:29):
Here's Currents first and ten from the fifty spins one
deep down the middle, knocked away incomplete. Everyone's looking for
a flag, but none to be found this time pass
intended for number nine Dylan Duncan.

Speaker 5 (01:45:42):
And Jason Wilkerson shows up again, but he did show
up early. South Point is absolutely right to be upset.
This should have been a pass interference about a half
a tit too early. Wilkerson hits him right in the
back right there on number nine. Dalan Duncan, who's been
sort of Currency's go to man here for much of
the third quarter.

Speaker 4 (01:46:02):
South Point has every right to be upset about that
call or no call.

Speaker 3 (01:46:05):
Twenty nine seconds to play in the third quarter, seven
to seven ballgame. South Point looking for their second score
of the third quarter, but a sack on second down.

Speaker 4 (01:46:14):
It's number four LJ.

Speaker 3 (01:46:16):
Porter coming in hot off the near side edge and
he drops Currents for a loss of eight.

Speaker 5 (01:46:22):
So really really nice blitz here the outside defensive lineman
Sincere Brewster breaks inside on Anthony Baxterer, and that allows LJ.
Porter to come off the edge untouched, kind of keeps
him in the pocket. Currents had nowhere to go because
of the outside end leverage that Porter came with, that
blitz on nice scheme, nice play sets up a big

(01:46:42):
third down when.

Speaker 4 (01:46:43):
We come out of the quarter break, no doubt about it.

Speaker 3 (01:46:45):
That's triple zeros three quarters in the books, tie ball
game twelve minutes on the clock to decide the winner
here in week one, to keep Pounding Classic twenty twenty
five edition, twelve minutes to go seven to seven Stallions
and Huskies all knotted up right here on Sports Radio
ninety two seven WFNZ.

Speaker 2 (01:47:03):
You're listening, John JAWNFNZFM Harrisburg, Hey, w LNHD Flee Charlotte.

Speaker 1 (01:47:09):
M Nachelons of that Charlotte's points.

Speaker 3 (01:47:11):
Had fourth quarter action moments away here from Bank of
America Stadium.

Speaker 4 (01:47:18):
To keep pounding.

Speaker 3 (01:47:18):
High School Classic twenty twenty five Huff Huskies and South
Point Stallions out of rock Hill, South Carolina, a border
war that has gone down to the fourth quarter. Seven
to seven is the score and South Point facing a
third down and twenty as we come out of the
break and start the fourth quarter. The game turned at

(01:47:39):
the beginning of this half when Jesavion Currents, the South
Carolina commit, took over at quarterback for the Stallions. He's
gotten it done with his legs. He's made some plays
through the air, but he's got his work cut out
for him right here on third down in twenty JJ.

Speaker 5 (01:47:51):
And this is a big third and twenty And with
that little quarter timeout. What I'm saying there, if I'm
Bobby Collins, is I'm saying, hey, look, it's third and twenty.
Our defense is playing really good. You've made some big plays.
This isn't the time to force it. This isn't the
moment if you get a single coverage throw it up.
But I'm perfectly happy running the ball, punning it away

(01:48:13):
and pinning huff back.

Speaker 4 (01:48:15):
Let our defense take over.

Speaker 3 (01:48:18):
From the far side hash south point now moving left
to right currents plenty of time, flips it near side,
drops it off to number eight Cayden Watkins. Watkins takes
off down the near sideline, picks up a chunk of yardage.
He needed the forty of huff and they're gonna give
it to him. They needed twenty, and they got twenty
yards exactly. They convert on third and twenty now into

(01:48:42):
plus territory.

Speaker 5 (01:48:43):
The Stallion's getting it done. The beauty of that play
is in its simplicity. Everybody's covered. Currents gets out of
the play, but instead of looking for the big shot,
he just checks it down to Cayden Watkins, who makes
one man miss the safety Jason Wilkerson, who's had a
lot of big plays so far in today's game, and
Watkins just outraces everybody else the sideline.

Speaker 4 (01:49:01):
He needed twenty and he got twenty one. How about that?

Speaker 3 (01:49:04):
Here we go, first down to ten from the forty
yard line. Now on the near side, Hash Current's going deep,
throwing in a double coverage, catches made touchdown and a
flag for now six on the board for the South
Point Stallions.

Speaker 5 (01:49:19):
I think they're maybe getting offensive passer appearance. I'd be
very curious what this conversation is happening at the two
yard line between the back judge and the side judge.
Malik Ratlift if it stands yep, catches a forty yard
touchdown pass, but it's coming back, so Currents finds the
single coverage he gets in wide open. I believe that

(01:49:42):
was Kayden Vassal wide open. He underthrew it a little bit. Yeah,
Malik Ratliff, my apologies. No, Malik Ratliffe called for a
push off there, so so Currents has ratlift open it
is a touchdown and he just kind of throws it.
So Ratliff makes a really good attempt to kind of

(01:50:03):
come back for the ball, but in as he's doing it,
we call it back padding. So he's hitting the back
of the safety Jonah Holloway, and Holloway goes to the ground.
If Holloway doesn't go to the ground, nobody sees it.
But because their feet kind of get tangled and Holloway
goes to the ground, the flags come flying, So a
touchdown turns into a negative fifteen yard play.

Speaker 3 (01:50:25):
So now it's first in twenty five from the forty
five of South Point, and here's Current's going deep again.
But nobody home. That was a miscommunication. There was nobody
in the neighborhood.

Speaker 5 (01:50:35):
And Currents was yelling at the same exact back judge
calling for DPI on the opposite side, but he threw
that one so far over the receiver's head that they
weren't going to get any call. But as this second
half is unfolded, you can see that the game is
beginning to open up, and current certainly feels comfortable throwing
the ball down the field. He's hunting for explosives that,

(01:50:56):
like we talked about in the first quarter, should.

Speaker 4 (01:50:59):
Be an excited finish here.

Speaker 3 (01:51:02):
Second down and twenty five, it's a quick hitter out
to the near side, catch made by number eight Caden Watkins.
Watkins picks up. We'll see where they spotted. Looks like
it's gonna be the forty eight yard line. That'll be
a pick up of about seven. They're gonna call it
to forty nine, so we'll call it a gain of six.

Speaker 5 (01:51:23):
This game is getting very physical on the outside. We
knew this game was physical on the inside. These corners
and safeties and running backs and wide receivers in the
run game, and then the extra carries very physical.

Speaker 3 (01:51:39):
Third down to nineteen from the forty nine Currents, a
man wide open over the middle of the field, catches made.

Speaker 4 (01:51:43):
It's number nine Dalan Duncan.

Speaker 3 (01:51:45):
Duncan fighting for more to the thirty yard line and
he's got a first down. Another big play for the
Stallion offense where there were none in existence in the
first half. JJ they just keep finding chunks here in
the second half.

Speaker 5 (01:51:59):
The field has really opened up and Currents has got
a big arm, so now they can they can get
to all parts of the field there, and these receivers
are doing a nice job of finding the soft spots
in the zone. And quickly they go back to the
line of scrimmage. A first down handoff inside the thirty
down to the twenty seven yard line.

Speaker 4 (01:52:18):
RJ. Brown with the carry that top.

Speaker 5 (01:52:20):
They're going quick here, probably going to some of their
their quick game stuff.

Speaker 3 (01:52:27):
I'll tell you what what a day Dale Duncan is
having catching the football, averaging nearly ten yards of reception.

Speaker 5 (01:52:34):
So there's two kind of little inside runs. And I've
been very I've made a lot of comments about I
don't think they need to run inside anymore, but sometimes
quarterbacks just need these little, these slow, little breaks like
Currents has been running all over the yard, making.

Speaker 4 (01:52:47):
Decisions, throwing the ball deep.

Speaker 5 (01:52:49):
Sometimes a coach could just say, hey, let's give you
an easy run, kind of reset your mind here.

Speaker 4 (01:52:53):
But now it sets up third and.

Speaker 3 (01:52:54):
Five from the twenty six yard line, near side hash
south point. Still moving left to right, Currents throwing it
up for grabs, giving a chance to Caden Vassel, but
can't hang on ball a little bit off target, drifting
out of bounds incomplete. That'll bring up fourth down and six.
It's a pretty good throw.

Speaker 5 (01:53:14):
Vassal didn't do a particularly good job of giving currents
the sideline. So like on any practice field, there's usually
a red line about five yards from the sideline that
the wide receiver runs to give a little bit of
room to the sideline. Well, Vassal's running right down the sideline.
So a really nice throw, but just no room for
currents to land it. It lands two yards out of

(01:53:34):
bounds for an incomplete pass, which.

Speaker 3 (01:53:36):
Is avian currents up to one hundred and twenty three
yards passing here today and one oh seven of that
one to twenty three coming here in the second half.
What a change it's been for the Stallions offense. And
a time out taken by Huff. We'll take it with them.
Seven to seven, ball game, ten to fifteen left to go,

(01:53:56):
and we're going down the stretch here at Bank of
America Stadium and the keep pounding claps.

Speaker 6 (01:54:00):

If you are listening to the Keep Pounding High School
Classic on Sports Radio ninety two point seventyfn Z.

Speaker 4 (01:54:40):
Well fans.

Speaker 3 (01:54:41):
The Carolina Panthers are excited to welcome what Aburger as
a partner in tonight's game. JAJ and I will be
selecting the Whataburger Player of the Game, who will be
recognized on field at the conclusion of this contest. In
addition to receiving the Whataburger Player of the Game trophy,
the winner will receive free Whataburger for a year. What
a good deal if you ask me, Yeah, pretty good.

(01:55:02):
We're gonna talk about this in the second game. But
is this kind of nil like free Waterburger? Is that
all part of the deal?

Speaker 4 (01:55:07):
I guess nothing's off the table anymore. That's right.

Speaker 3 (01:55:10):
Fourth down and six for South point. Here's Javan Currents,
pressure in his face, drops it off complete to number
eight Caden Watkins. Watkins wrapped up at the twenty four
yard line, gain of two, well short of the sticks,
and that'll be a turnover on downs and then what
remains a tie ball game.

Speaker 4 (01:55:30):
Seven to seven, Huff, we'll get the football back.

Speaker 5 (01:55:33):
So a really nice open field tackle by Jackson if
he plays nickel so he's on the inside in the
secondary and Watkins comes across, he's got a chance to
get a first down.

Speaker 4 (01:55:44):
And just a really nice open field tackle.

Speaker 5 (01:55:46):
Heath one on one wraps up around the ways, drags
him the ground, and look, Huff got.

Speaker 4 (01:55:53):
Off to that good start. They scored on their second drive.

Speaker 5 (01:55:57):
And as much as we were negative on South Point
in the first half, we haven't seen Huff Doo much
of anything since that second drive. So we're gonna see
here Ethan Royle. In that first quarter, there was a
lot of wide receiver screens. They were using a big
part of the field. I'd like to see them get
back to it. It's seven to seven. You know, it
feels like Huffs behind because of how good the third

(01:56:17):
quarter's gone.

Speaker 4 (01:56:18):
But they've got all the advantage in the world.

Speaker 5 (01:56:20):
They just need to run their offense, get back into
their power and gap schemes, play with a little bit
of tempo, and try to go score score on this
drive here, Jade and White in motion across the formation.
Shotguns snap back to Royal and designed to run up
the middle, goes nowhere, stop for a loss of one,
and that'll bring up second down and eleven for the
huff Huskies. Deshaun Baker not only the head coach, but

(01:56:41):
the play caller for the Huff And you gotta wonder
if there's something he's been waiting to call, something he's
been waiting to pull the trigger on so far in
this game. Yeah, you can have a fairly normal drive here.
It feels like we're kind of getting into the waning moments.
But there's probably two drives left for both teams. So
can I drive the length of the here and end
this play or end this drive with points?

Speaker 4 (01:57:03):
That's a must.

Speaker 3 (01:57:04):
Jamari and Morrison in the backfield. Here's Royal wide receiver
screen to the far side, going nowhere, complete to number
six Jade and White, but White tackled immediately and that's
another loss this time. Two more, three more, and it'll
bring up third down and fourteen.

Speaker 4 (01:57:20):
Well, we see their wide receiver screen.

Speaker 5 (01:57:22):
They get three guys out, but the right tackle, Sean Kennedy,
just to smidge late.

Speaker 4 (01:57:26):
He's the final block to kind of spring that free.

Speaker 5 (01:57:28):
But coming out of the core of the offensive line
to the outfield or to the outside.

Speaker 4 (01:57:34):
He was moving pretty good.

Speaker 5 (01:57:35):
There was gonna be a massive collision, but the tackle
happened just before he got out there.

Speaker 3 (01:57:42):
Not many options on third and fourteen from your own
seventeen yard line. We'll see what DeShawn Baker can draw
up here. Royal takes the snap, sets his feet, throws
it over the middle and that's a drop Tyron Evans.
The Miami commits a lot of defenders there in the area.
Not sure if he thought he was about to take
a hit or not, JJ, but that's the ball he's

(01:58:03):
got to catch.

Speaker 5 (01:58:03):
I was gonna say, a really good throw here by Royal,
and it's on him in the hands, but right in
the middle of three defenders and Jozavian Curranz, who's played
a lot of quarterback, he was coming out of the
post as a safety and there was that was getting
ready to be a big lick there and it feels
like Evans heard the footsteps, whether he heard him or
felt him, because it was coming right at the first

(01:58:24):
down marker.

Speaker 4 (01:58:25):
It sets up this fourth down in a punt number
eighty six.

Speaker 3 (01:58:29):
Bailey Nelson, the junior punter, as we mentioned, he transferred
in from the Colorado High School within the last month,
gets that one away. We got some traffic surrounding number
eight Cayden Watkins who makes the catch right at midfield
of flag flies.

Speaker 4 (01:58:45):
We're also going to get a penalty here.

Speaker 5 (01:58:47):
It looks like they're gonna get amar Doug dog in
number twenty two for a hold at the bottom of
the play.

Speaker 4 (01:58:53):
At the top, it was almost another catastrophe.

Speaker 5 (01:58:56):
The gunner runs into Caden Watkins and we almost had
our I can fumble on a punt. So again, as
we've said, special teams, especially at the high school level
at the beginning of the season, there's a lot of chaos.

Speaker 4 (01:59:08):
But South Point is going to get the ball back.

Speaker 3 (01:59:15):
There you go holding on south Point ten yard penalty.
The punt was caught at midfield. That'll back them up
ten more so the Stallions will begin this drive on.

Speaker 5 (01:59:26):
Their own forty yard That was almost Willie die again
a second time. He was the one that got hit
by the ball in in the first quarter. He's blocking
one of the Huff's gunners and almost runs in to Watkins,
who does a great job of sort of.

Speaker 4 (01:59:39):
Avoiding the contact.

Speaker 5 (01:59:41):
Watkins needs to do a better job on these punts
of when he can feel the pressure getting people away
from him.

Speaker 3 (01:59:49):
Don't forget eight o'clock kicked tonight Grimsley and West Charlotte.
This is just the appetizer, though it's been a great
one here in the opening game. Is right there on
first down that looks like a horse collar to me.
Number four RJ. Brown takes the handoff, sprints around the
right side, picks up nearly five yards, but dragged down
from behind. And that one probably going against toughs defense.

Speaker 5 (02:00:09):
I think they're gonna get sincere Brewster number fifty one
on a horse caller.

Speaker 4 (02:00:14):
We'll see what the official call is.

Speaker 5 (02:00:15):
But there's been about six or seven helmets fly off
in this game. Obviously, call a lot of high school games,
there's many helmets come off normally.

Speaker 3 (02:00:24):
No, I haven't seen this many before. I've counted at
least four or five so far here today. That's for sure.

Speaker 4 (02:00:30):
Equipment managers.

Speaker 5 (02:00:39):
The equipment managers are getting their work cut out for them,
as every when needs a buckholder gin straps a little.

Speaker 4 (02:00:44):
Bit more so.

Speaker 3 (02:00:45):
Penalty accepted Ryan Peterson the culprit a horse collar tackle
on what would have been a five yard run for R. J. Brown,
but Bobby Collins accepting the penalty fifteen yards and it
moves his offense into plus territory. New line of scrimmage
the forty two of huff south point, moving left to right,
ball on the near side. Hash Here's Currents takes the

(02:01:05):
snap quarterback keeper around the right side, following his blockers
inside the forty and pushes the pile down to the
thirty five yard line, a pickup of seven on first down.

Speaker 5 (02:01:16):
And this sort of feels like it's gonna be the
Jazavian current Show the rest of the way. Right, I
don't know that anyone else is really going to touch
the ball, at least in the backfield. They run another
one of those split zone plays, so everyone on the
offensive line's blocking to the right. They're bringing one guy
back and you're hoping for a cutback lane somewhere around
the center point of the formation, and Kurrents is able
to kind of push the line of scrimmage for for

(02:01:38):
probably the best inside run we've seen the whole day.

Speaker 4 (02:01:41):
Albeit seven yards.

Speaker 3 (02:01:44):
Two hundred and ninety six total yards of offense between
these two teams here this afternoon, one point eighty one
for the South Point Stallions, much of it, most of
it here in the second half. Here's Currents on second
down and three from the thirty five keeps it again.
Will Dingle, the offensive coordinator, clearly content to call his

(02:02:06):
quarterback's number off in here in the second half, and.

Speaker 4 (02:02:10):
It's a first down for the Stallions.

Speaker 5 (02:02:11):
We're getting a lot of just simple plays, one or
two pullers working the inside of the zone. But Currents
did get his ankle kind of twisted up on that play,
got up a little hobbling. I don't know if it's
a big deal, but one of the problems of running your.

Speaker 3 (02:02:24):
Quarterback seven to seven ball game offense is coming to
premium here today. Inside of seven minutes to play first down,
it's a quick hitter from Currents out to the near side,
and it's incomplete.

Speaker 5 (02:02:35):
And Kurns definitely is a little hobbled, kind of messing
with his feet. He's wearing these bright gold shoes here
today and those feet are bother him. He tried to
throw that ball out to Watkins and just didn't step,
just kind of caught the pass and throw, and he's
he has bothered right now. I'm not sure if this
is how this is going to affect the last seven

(02:02:56):
minutes of this ball game.

Speaker 4 (02:02:59):
Six fifty.

Speaker 3 (02:03:00):
Having the clock stops, second down to ten, hand off
to RJ. Brown coming across the formation, gets back to
the original line of scrimmage, gains maybe a yard, but
it has been tough sledding for the Stallion run game
against this tough defense today, not many holes to run through.

Speaker 5 (02:03:18):
Brown does a nice job, but just kind of fighting
for extra yards. But it sets up this third and
nine and again. The last quarter and a half has
been the Jezavian current show. But he's barely moving on
the field right now, just sort of slowly hobbling from
shotgun snap to shotgun snap on the last two.

Speaker 4 (02:03:35):
He is uncomfortable.

Speaker 5 (02:03:36):
I'll be really curious to see if Bobby Collins is
willing to run the ball with Currents again, because he's
in four down territory.

Speaker 3 (02:03:43):
Four wide receivers. Ball spotted in the middle of the
field three receivers to the near side, Currents biding his time,
throws it up for grabs.

Speaker 4 (02:03:50):
Tip ball. Was it caught?

Speaker 3 (02:03:53):
It was number one Malik Ratliffe wins the tip drill
first down Stallions. That looked like an inner exception when
it came out of Currents's hands, but it was tipped
up in the air and Ratliffe was in the right
place at the right time.

Speaker 5 (02:04:06):
Current's put nothing on this, his feet clearly bothering. It
just kind of floats the ball up. Three guys collide
and Ratliff, who wasn't even part of those three, just
kind of finds his way to a tip ball, and
we're watching it is able to just barely keep it
off the ground. Really nice call by the back judge
calling that a completion on a critical third down conversion.

Speaker 3 (02:04:28):
Eighteen yard pickup sets up the Stallions first and ten
from the tough twelve yard line.

Speaker 4 (02:04:34):
Seven to seven ball game.

Speaker 3 (02:04:36):
Here's Currents as the Stallions are looking for the go
ahead score. Here for a half minutes left to play,
and Currents tripped up after a gain of a couple
still hobbling, But I.

Speaker 5 (02:04:48):
Mean, I give Bobby Collins a lot of credit there
is still.

Speaker 4 (02:04:52):
Nothing to be run in the middle of this formation.

Speaker 5 (02:04:54):
But he is committed to the run game, there's no
doubt about it. And h and so now in this
part of the field here, this isn't the end of
the world to kind of slow this down. We talked
about how these both these coaches want to play with
a little bit of pace and run the ball.

Speaker 4 (02:05:09):
Well.

Speaker 5 (02:05:09):
Now here with five minutes left and Huff really having
done nothing on offense since the first quarter, they are
trying to milk all this clock off and hopefully end
for them in the end zone.

Speaker 3 (02:05:20):
Brown and Zimeir Gordon to either side of Currents. The
handoff goes to r J.

Speaker 4 (02:05:24):
Brown.

Speaker 3 (02:05:24):
Brown around the right side, tries to leap a Huff
defender and knocked out of bounds at the six yard line.

Speaker 4 (02:05:31):
It's a gain of three for RJ. Brown.

Speaker 5 (02:05:34):
He was sort of testing the sidelin as we like
to call it. It's an inside run that kind of
slowly bounces outside. He thought he had an angle to
the sideline until Drew Johnson number twenty eight comes out
from the corner and is able to get a tackle
through his outside shoulder.

Speaker 4 (02:05:52):
RJ Brown lands right on his.

Speaker 5 (02:05:54):
Shoulder there, but really nice tackle by Johnson on the sideline.

Speaker 3 (02:05:57):
Third and four from the sixth south point can get
a first down if they reached the two yard line.
Floats it out to Brown a hospital ball and a
big hit number twelve Jonah Holloway laid r J Brown
out and a flag comes in.

Speaker 5 (02:06:11):
Is that going to be targeting? They're talking about it.
From my angle, I thought he went shoulder kind of
across the chest. But what did the back judge see
because the sideline judge right in front of the play
did not throw the flag. I thought he had the
best angle the back judge by the back pylon who.

Speaker 4 (02:06:31):
Sort of shielded.

Speaker 5 (02:06:32):
And they're gonna talk about it a little bit, although
they may just be talking about where are they spotting
the ball after this foul?

Speaker 3 (02:06:38):
They are not picking up this flag, still deliberating down
on the field. Targeting is to call Samari Matthews the

(02:06:59):
guilty part. Automatic first down will give the Stallions first
and goal from the three yards and it's.

Speaker 5 (02:07:05):
A bad call. It's shoulder to shoulder, really shoulder to chest.
The wrong official through that flag. The official right in
front of the play had a perfect look and didn't
call the.

Speaker 4 (02:07:15):
Flag first and goal give is to R. J. Brown again.

Speaker 3 (02:07:18):
He's dropped in the backfield again, this time number five
Ryan Peterson shooting the gap to make the stop and
to bring back a point you made there a moment ago, JJ.
The running backs for South Point today so far have
combined for twenty one total rushing yards in this game.
Just nothing doing for the running backs at South Point.

Speaker 5 (02:07:37):
There's nothing been there and really the only running that's
happened from currents and it's really more on the outsider
on scramble. So I'm not really sure why they. You know, look,
it's part of their identity. They want to run the ball,
but there's just nothing there versus Huff As South Point
uses its final time.

Speaker 3 (02:07:54):
Out, fourth down and two from the four yard line.
Coming out of this timeout, Kyle Bailey JJ Jansen with
you the Keep Pounding High School Classic twenty twenty five,
Game number one, four h eight left to go on
the clock, seven to seven, the score. The second drive
of the game for the huff Huskies produced a four

(02:08:16):
yard touchdown run from their quarterback Ethan Royal. That's their
only offense of the game. South Point was scoreless going
into halftime and that's when Bobby Collins made a quarterback
change from Cameron McMillan to Jesvion Currents, who, if we're
being honest right now, depending upon the outcome, of course,
he is our what a burger player of the game.

(02:08:37):
His second half production has been incredible. One hundred and
forty three yards passing so far here today, forty three
yards rushing, including a fourteen yard touchdown run. And when
you look at this, south Point will line up for
the go ahead field goal from twenty one yards out.

Speaker 4 (02:08:57):
Lawson Miller. The kick is good and for the.

Speaker 3 (02:09:02):
First time today the Stallions have a lead ten to
seven South Point with four zero four remaining.

Speaker 5 (02:09:08):
And there's some big celebrations on the sideline and look
normally fourth and two at the four yard line. Analytically,
I'm a numbers nerd. I like going for it there.

Speaker 4 (02:09:17):
But here's a.

Speaker 5 (02:09:18):
Couple of things that I've that I saw kind of
going into that situation. Your best player, current who's done
the bulk of the damage in the second half, is
clearly hobbling.

Speaker 4 (02:09:26):
His last two throws lobbed balls.

Speaker 5 (02:09:28):
They got away with both of them when they shouldn't
have a completion, and really what I thought was a
phantom targeting call, and he's not really running the ball
since he got hurt. With about eight minutes left in
the fourth quarter, you kick the field goal there, you
take the lead. South Points defense has played fantastic since
the one drive in the first first quarter, so I

(02:09:49):
feel pretty.

Speaker 4 (02:09:49):
Good about taking the lead kicking this ball away.

Speaker 5 (02:09:52):
The one downside is if they had missed there, Huff
would have ninety six yards to go, and we haven't.

Speaker 4 (02:09:58):
Seen Tough kick a field goal yet.

Speaker 5 (02:10:00):
I don't know that there is a field goal option
available now with more high school kickoffs. This ball is
likely to get returned out a little bit as Lawson
Miller will come on to do the kickoff here. I
haven't seen Huff do anything on offense here in about
two and a half quarters. I like taking the lead
and trying to turn this into this is the last

(02:10:20):
possession of the game. If I'm South Point, if I
can stop him, I win.

Speaker 3 (02:10:24):
Jaden White, Drew Johnson, and Christian Carter standing back at
their own fifteen yard line for the Husky set to
return this kickoff Lawson Miller, who just drilled a twenty
one yard field goal to put the stallions ahead for
the first time here today ten to seven, backs up
and readies himself to approach the football. Balls teed up

(02:10:49):
at the forty and here comes Miller with the approach,
and that's a misfire, high end over end kickfielded by
jamari On Morrison at the twenty eight. He finds a lane,
takes off sprint to throw it across the forty across
the forty five out to the forty seven yard line,
and the HUF Huskies will have tremendous field position to
start this critical drive with three fifty eight left to

(02:11:10):
go in the ball game.

Speaker 5 (02:11:11):
And you said it right, Kyle, Like Larson, Miller kind
of tows the ball, kind of hits the bottom of it,
kind of on you fluff a wedge, and then goes
straight up in the air. So he's thinking that ball
is getting driven to the back line. Ball kind of
lands right in the middle of the field at about
the thirty five and Jamarian Morrison, who's a running back
and is normally comfortable with the ball in his hands,
takes it right to the sideline a big carry and

(02:11:33):
they start in great field position at the minus forty
eight field goal to tie touchdown to win.

Speaker 3 (02:11:38):
This Hough Huskies team has been in some big games,
including last year's playoffs and march to the four A
state semifinals. They have a history of handling pressure. They'll
have to do it right. Here is on first down,
Ethan Royal tries to roll out to his right, pressure
immediately in his face and has to throw it away incomplete.

Speaker 4 (02:11:55):
Royle's lucky there.

Speaker 5 (02:11:56):
De Kwon Evans comes off as a play action fake
and kind of rolling to his right, and Evans laid
a big lick. He just barely got outside the tackle box.
Otherwise that's gonna be grounding in a big play against
the huff offense. But he does got outside, gets the
ball past the line of scrimmage and no call there.

Speaker 3 (02:12:16):
Clock stops at three minutes fifty three seconds left to go.
Huff led for the majority of this game, South Point
tying it up back at the end of the third
quarter and now huff trails by three second and ten
from the forty eight. Moving right to left, balls on
the far side Hash to give us to Morris, and
Morrison takes a shot and across the fifty yard line.

(02:12:36):
He goes out to the forty five into plus territory
and that's a pickup of seven for Jamari and Morrison.

Speaker 5 (02:12:43):
Coach Baker is livid on the sideline. I'm not really
sure what he saw. Maybe he felt like sort of
a oh, I see what he saw there. As we
get on the on the on the screen, j Jazaviant
currents rips Morrison's face masshit.

Speaker 4 (02:13:00):
You'd have gotten fifteen yards.

Speaker 5 (02:13:01):
So that's two big calls that have gone against Huff
here in the last three minutes.

Speaker 3 (02:13:05):
Three wide receivers, two to the far side, one to
the near. Royal flips it out to number six Jaden
Whites and White scampers for a first down, runs out
of bounds at the forty one yard line.

Speaker 4 (02:13:19):
So Huff's running their offense.

Speaker 5 (02:13:21):
This isn't like a two minute like up tempo offense
right now. They got one time out, there's three to
fifteen left. They just need to be careful that they're
not going too slow. The clocks stopped as they went
out of bounds on that play. But I haven't seen
a lot of explosive plays down the field for Huff,
So if they're running their normal offense, they do need
to play with a little bit of tempo between snaps.

Speaker 3 (02:13:41):
Empty backfield for Royal Morrison in the slot. This time
Royal fakes to give and then spikes it. Didn't like
what he saw and throws it away incomplete.

Speaker 5 (02:13:52):
J Justavian Currents kind of jumped a little wide receiver
screen on the Huff sideline and for about the last
four or five plays, Currents has been having an on
going conversation with the Huff sideline.

Speaker 4 (02:14:03):
So he's clearly into the game. His ankle maybe not
feeling his best, but.

Speaker 5 (02:14:08):
He's certainly chattering with the Huff sideline quite a bit there,
and he really put an end to that play there
on the wide receiver screen right in from the Huff bench.

Speaker 3 (02:14:16):
Three ten left to go, second down and ten Huff
at the south point forty one. The Huskies have just
one time out left in their pockets. Straight drop for Royal.
Once it all Evans open caught big play down to
the one yard line. He fell short of the goal line,
knee hit the ground at the one, but it's first

(02:14:36):
down and go from the one for the Huskies.

Speaker 5 (02:14:39):
A game changing play here with three minutes to go. Well,
and there's the explosive we're looking at it. It's a
concept where there's a dig round coming across the middle
of the field.

Speaker 4 (02:14:47):
Currents jumps up thinking that's.

Speaker 5 (02:14:49):
The throw, and they throw the ball to Evans behind Currents,
who makes a great catch and pulls it down kind
of hugging it like a pillow, down to the side,
down on his should there down at the one yard line.

Speaker 4 (02:15:01):
Cool concept there by Huff.

Speaker 3 (02:15:03):
We've been waiting all day for Evans to get going,
and right there he doesn't. Royal his second rushing touchdown
of the day.

Speaker 4 (02:15:11):
Six on the board. The Huskies retake the lead.

Speaker 3 (02:15:14):
Ethan Royal punches it in and just like that, Huff
steals all the momentum back here at the bank.

Speaker 5 (02:15:21):
I want to go back. There's a great run in
there by Ethan Royle. But I want to go back
to the play before. What a really nice concepts. You
have two high safeties, so Currents's job is keep everything
in front of them. They run a dig route fifteen
yards breaking into the middle of the field.

Speaker 4 (02:15:36):
Currents, because all the throws have.

Speaker 5 (02:15:38):
Been short, jumps up for that one and they throw
it in behind him for a big play.

Speaker 4 (02:15:43):
Thirteen to ten. Your score.

Speaker 3 (02:15:45):
Here's the extra point kick is up between the pipes.

Speaker 4 (02:15:48):
It's good. Fourteen to ten.

Speaker 3 (02:15:50):
The Huskies back on top by four, and we've got
some theatrics, send some drama down the stretch Here at
Bank of America Stadium. The Huskies lead at four, fourteen
to ten, and South Point will get the football back
when we return. It's the Keep Pounding Classic presented by
Belk here on Sports Radio ninety two to seven WFNZ.

Speaker 2 (02:16:10):
If you're listening to that Keep Pounding High School Classic
on Sports Radio ninety two point SEVENTYFNZ, well.

Speaker 3 (02:16:22):
We got a couple of quarterbacks vying for the What
a Burger Player of the game. Jasevian Currents looked like
the heavy betting favorite as of a couple of minutes ago,
but Ethan Royle, the Huff Husky quarterback, with his second
rushing touchdown of the afternoon, has put his Huskies back
on top fourteen to ten. Here at Bank of America Stadium,
The Keep Pounding High School Classic, presented by Belk, Kyle Bailey,

(02:16:46):
JJ Jansen taking it all the action and this game
has been very fun. It's gotten even more fun here
in the fourth quarter, and now Huff will kick the
football back to South Point and Jasevion Currents and the
Stallions JJ will have one more opera tunity to retake
the lead.

Speaker 5 (02:17:01):
Big kickoff here, let's see where this drive starts off.
But we talked about it all day. Bobby Collins has
used all his timeouts to forty one left. He doesn't
have a timeout and he needs a touchdown.

Speaker 3 (02:17:14):
Watkins and Duncans standing back at the five m catch
is caught by Cayden Watkins. Watkins brings it out with
a full head of steam across the twenty to twenty
five barrels across the thirty out to the thirty one
yard line.

Speaker 5 (02:17:27):
So South points offense with Currents throwing has been far
more wide open. So I'm not really worried with two
thirty five left if they have a lot of timeouts.
What they don't have is the ability to stop the
clock if this thing starts to get close to the end.
And that's why you'd love to be able to keep
a couple of timeouts just to sort of control the
pace of this two minute drill. They can still get
out of bounds. The clock's still going to stop under

(02:17:49):
a minute when we get up. When we get a
change of the change, so there's plenty of time they
need a touchdown, so they're obviously in four down territory
the whole way. Currents was not rowing the ball particularly
strong at the end of the last drive, but he
looked good as a safety.

Speaker 4 (02:18:04):
Let's see how this goes.

Speaker 3 (02:18:06):
First and ten from the thirty one here's Currents from
the middle of the field, drops back, flushed right cuts
he has open field forty yard line, forty five out
to midfield looking for blockers. Still on his feet forty
five forty brought down at the thirty seven yard line
of the Huskies. But we have a flag all the
way back at the south point twenty six yard line.

Speaker 4 (02:18:26):
Let's see what it's all about.

Speaker 5 (02:18:28):
Pretty sure this is the area of the field we
get holding. Let's see if we can find it. I
think you nailed it.

Speaker 3 (02:18:34):
Yeah, had official hasn't made his call over the PA
system yet, but did signal holding to the south point sideline.
The Stallions know this one's coming back. That would have
been an enormous play here late in this game.

Speaker 5 (02:18:50):
Trying to find the spot and holding in high school
football is particularly punitive.

Speaker 4 (02:18:55):
Oh two fouls, there you go.

Speaker 5 (02:19:07):
They got it on Baxter. I don't think it was Baxter.
He's arguing his point. I think it was on the
right side. It was either. I'm pretty sure they're gonna
get Kayden k th the right guard. There was someone
kind of got tackled there. But in high school football
this is particularly punitive. They're only gonna get him for
a ten yard hold. Who happened right at the line
of scrimmage. But what a big play there instead of

(02:19:31):
the plus forty there at the minus twenty one.

Speaker 3 (02:19:33):
Four wide receivers set three to the far side, going
left to right on your radio dial, Ray Sean Brown
in the pocket, current's in trouble, throws it out of bounds.
Was out of the pocket, no flags fly in incomplete.
That'll bring up second down and twenty from the twenty
one yard line and on the far sideline.

Speaker 4 (02:19:55):
Maybe head coach just shawn Yeah.

Speaker 5 (02:20:01):
Different different in the pro game where they got to
still get it past the line of scrimmage. He was
outside in the pocket and threw it to the sideline.
Although they may be coming back to discuss it here.

Speaker 3 (02:20:11):
The head official jumped on the microphone there to say
he was outside the pocket. To your point, rules are
a bit different still, no flag on the field, so
Avion currents, oh, we'll get away with that one fourteen
ten to score two oh four left to play here
in the fourth quarter of the opening game with the
Keithondi class.

Speaker 5 (02:20:29):
I think they're gonna I think they're gonna change this again.
See what they have had two meetings here. Yep, right now,
they're going to change the call.

Speaker 3 (02:20:47):
How about that intentional grounding is the call after all?

Speaker 5 (02:20:52):
So I was a little surprised. I just assumed I
didn't know the high school rule. But yes, historically at
every level of football. Still, even though he's outside the pocket,
it's still got to get back to the line of scrimmage.
And the judge on the far side saw that ball
came up about fifteen yards show.

Speaker 4 (02:21:08):
So this play is all the way back at the one. Wow.

Speaker 3 (02:21:10):
So to be clear, the Stallions began this drive on
their own thirty one after the penalties, the new line
of scrimmage the one yard line. Current, standing at his
own end zone, takes the shotgun, snap pressure in his face,
steps up, flips it near side catches made by Watkins
at the fifteen yard line, and a swarm of Husky
tacklers will wrap him up at the sixteen and drive
him backward. You know, I wondered this would have been

(02:21:35):
a very bold strategy. But with first and forty, I
guess they took away. So second and forty. I wondered
if South Point would choose to just take a safety.
And here's the thought down six on side kicking. If
you get it, you get a new set of downs.

Speaker 5 (02:21:49):
Third down and still twenty five is an incredible thing
to overcome here. I thought maybe they would consider it.
They'll still have a shot here on the the client.
So we got we got third and twenty five.

Speaker 4 (02:22:04):
I don't know.

Speaker 5 (02:22:05):
I think I would have taken that penalty, even though
it was only a half a yard. I want to
keep them pinned back as long as possible with a
minute forty nine left, so to let them get out
with a fifteen yard game there, even though it's third
and twenty five.

Speaker 4 (02:22:16):
I don't know. I think I would have kept them
backed up if I was half clock.

Speaker 3 (02:22:19):
Continuing to roll now one forty two to play third
down and twenty five for the Stallions. Balls on their
own sixteen yard line near side hash four wide receivers
three to the top of the formation. Now Watkins into
the slot empty backfield, Currents calls for it, takes the
snap protection, holding up Currents going deep picked off Drew

(02:22:39):
Johnson caught it in stride at the south Point thirty
eight yard line, a turnover at the worst possible time
for Jesavian Currents and the Stallions, and with no timeouts left.

Speaker 4 (02:22:56):
That's it. That's the ballgame. Just go back to the
beginning of that drive.

Speaker 5 (02:23:02):
A thirty yard run got nullified by a holding penalty,
and before you know it, with an intentional grounding it
was first and or second part of a second and
forty five instead of first intend at the plus plus
forty and Huff got out to the early lead. South
Point came roaring back behind Jaesavian Currents, but in the

(02:23:23):
end Ethan Royle, who was just steady the whole game,
made the one big throw to get him down to
the one yard line, runs it in for the second time,
and Huff's gonna walk out of here really happy with
a season opening victory in a hard fought game vers
South Point the South Point Stallions.

Speaker 3 (02:23:40):
Joesavian Currents has been tremendous in the second half.

Speaker 4 (02:23:44):
One hundred and forty two.

Speaker 3 (02:23:46):
Yards passing into second half alone, forty three yards rushing,
a fourteen yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter. Has
made some huge plays to spark the Stallions here in
the second half, but throws a critical interception there to
Drew Johnson to end it. As Ethan Royal and the
Huskies offense takes the field and victory formation. Royal takes

(02:24:07):
the shotgun snap and takes a knee and he'll have
to do that one more time to put a bow
on an opening week victory for the huff Huskies. Now,
when the eight to A classification expecting big things this year,
didn't play their best football today by a long shot.
You rarely see that in Week one of high school

(02:24:28):
football anyway. But this is a win that if you're
Deshaun Baker, you got to be really happy about. You
didn't play very well and you still get out of
here with a win. I mean he's going to be thrilled.
I mean, this is like beating your older brother in anything,
right there.

Speaker 4 (02:24:40):
He and Bobby Collins are really really close, going all
the way.

Speaker 5 (02:24:43):
Back to their South Carolina State days, and these are
two very similar styles. So you know, coach Baker came
out and he said, the the goal is we want
to win the Oprah.

Speaker 4 (02:24:53):
We want to go one to zero.

Speaker 5 (02:24:54):
And he's on the field already here as they're beginning
to celebrate, cheering in the crowd. What a huge win
for Huff And like you said, this is North Carolina
state bragging rights over South Carolina.

Speaker 4 (02:25:05):
He thought this was really important.

Speaker 5 (02:25:06):
He wanted to prove how good North Carolina football.

Speaker 4 (02:25:10):
Was and he proved it today. What a great victory
for Huff and the huff Huskies, well fans.

Speaker 3 (02:25:15):
Tonight's Whataburger Player of the Game is Ethan Royal, quarterback
of the huff Huskies. He will be recognized on the
field during the champions Trophy ceremony and will also receive
what must be one of the greatest awards that we've
ever heard of and certainly that I've ever given out
or presented.

Speaker 4 (02:25:32):
Free Whataburger for a year.

Speaker 3 (02:25:34):
Congratulations to Ethan Royal, our Whataburger Player of the Game.

Speaker 4 (02:25:39):
I live up at Lake Norman. They opened to Whataburger
just down the street from me last week. I feel
like we should get a little bit of that action.

Speaker 5 (02:25:47):
At least three months. I mean, we had to go
to the we had to watch the game, call the
whole game and pick one of these guys. That was
hard work. I mean, this is uh, what a cool
deal and what an awesome uh an awesome award there
for Ethan Royle. He played really really well and he
had the big throw at the end of the game
when it really mattered the most. Congratulations to him and

(02:26:08):
to Huff. Really, anytime you're winning a game award, it's
a team award. Huff played really really well today.

Speaker 3 (02:26:14):
Final score fourteen to ten. The Huskies hang on. Not
their best day, but a pretty good one. When you
walk away with the W. We'll come back, we'll wrap
up this one and we'll look ahead to the next one.
Don't forget Grimsley the Whorlies visiting the Bank tonight to
see West Charlotte the Lions, a couple of defending state
