There is an old saying that goes: “The only two certain things in life are death and taxes”

Well, we know for sure that death will one day greet us all thanks to the fall in the garden.

It’s an uncomfortable topic, especially as we approach its threshold.

Some of might die suddenly and unexpectedly, even while we enjoy good health.  But many of us are on a slow march of decline both physically and mentally that gives us plenty of time to reflect upon our lives and relationships before we meet our Maker.

There is an incredible service known as Hospice which helps people make this final journey in the most dignified and spiritual way.  Some services come to patients in their homes and others may be admitted to facilities which have the staff and medical equipment to care for multiple patients simultaneously.

My guest today has served these people on their last mile in these facilities by singing gospel tunes to both the patients and their families for over four years.  He has sung for nursing homes for fifteen years as well. And through these experiences the Lord lead him to write a brief book titled “Hospice Hymns: Touching Stories of Musical Therapy at Hospice Facilities”

His name is Ed Kinsey, a Memphis born Elvis lover whose father was a welder at the Army Depot. When that facility was closed, they moved to Granite City, Illinois, where after high school he received an associate degree in law enforcement. He then began a career as a policeman in the small town of Sparta Illinois until a shooting incident on May 26, 1989 at 3:05 AM changed his life.

This is an episode about transformation for Ed and keeping his promise to serve the Lord after being spared that night so long ago.  We read some excerpts from his book that are quite moving in how he helped those individuals and families confront the reality of death and to meet those waiting to help guide them through the portal to heaven!
