The quiet days between Christmas and the New Year invite reflection. As the busyness fades, we’re given space to look back—not only at moments of joy, but also at seasons of hardship. Gratitude doesn’t deny pain; it acknowledges God’s presence within it. Even in uncertainty, thanksgiving shifts our hearts to recognize how faithfully God has carried us through every circumstance. When we choose gratitude, our faith is strengthened and our hope for the future renewed.

TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
— 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NIV)

YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER

Dear God,
As this year comes to a close, I pause to look back with gratitude. It wasn’t an easy year, but I can see now that You were with me through every moment. I thank You for sustaining me in uncertainty, for providing comfort in pain, and for giving strength when I felt weak. Help me choose gratitude in every circumstance—not because life is always good, but because You are. As I step into what’s ahead, I trust You with my future just as You have faithfully carried me through the past.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON

  1. What is one moment from the past year—joyful or difficult—that you can now thank God for?

  2. How has practicing gratitude helped bring peace or clarity during challenging seasons of your life?

  3. As you prepare for a new year, how can reflecting on God’s past faithfulness strengthen your trust in Him for what’s ahead?

Speaker 1 (00:02):
Life Audio. Thank you for tuning in to your nightly Prayer,
a podcast designed to help you rest and connect with
your Father in heaven as the day ends. God is
ready to meet you in this moment of peace. As
you settle into sleep. After this short word from our sponsor,

(00:24):
we'll encounter tonight's devotional looking Back with Gratitude, written by
Christine Brown and read by your host, Brooke McLoughlin. Tonight's

(00:45):
scripture give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's
will for you in Christ Jesus First Thessalonians five eighteen.
Something to ponder. The week between Christmas and New year
Year's Day is one of my favorite weeks of the year,
when the excitement and activity of the season begins to calm,

(01:08):
quietness settles in, and we're left with a few days
of downtime before the calendar page turns. I've found it's
the perfect time for praying, hoping, and anticipating what's to
come in the year ahead. But this year I discovered
another reason to love this week. It also provides an
opportunity for us as christ followers, to look back on

(01:31):
the last year with gratitude, even in the hard parts.
It doesn't seem that long ago that I rolled into
January with my usual enthusiasm, planning for all the wonderful things. Weddings,
graduations and more filled my desk calendar pages, and I
looked forward to each event. But then the unthinkable happened.

(01:53):
Just a couple of weeks into the new year. A
cancer diagnosis changed everything. Next twelve months would take their
toll in a way I cannot explain. I recall a
whirlwind of questions, would I still be able to experience
all the wonderful things, or with this hard season, take
away the blessings of the days to come. Uncertainty can

(02:18):
cast a dark cloud over us when we face difficult circumstances.
In those times, it may be hard to find reasons
to be thankful, but that's exactly what our merciful God
calls us to do. For the Thessalonians five eighteen says
give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will
for you in Christ Jesus. In his letter to the

(02:41):
church in Thessalonika, the apostle Paul gave instructions to his
fellow believers that served as a guide for them in
their spiritual growth. Paul emphasized the importance of rejoicing, praying,
and giving thanks not only when things were going well,
but all the time. Understood firsthand the power and importance

(03:03):
of gratitude. A grateful heart ushures in peace, joy, and
an abundance of good things. Even though it can be
challenging to choose a spirit of thanksgiving in the midst
of trials, taking time to reflect on God's goodness in
hard times strengthens our faith and renews our hope for
the future. Let's set aside time this week to rejoice

(03:28):
in God's present goodness, pray for what's to come, and
give thanks for all God has brought us through this
past year. As we come to Him with grateful hearts,
we can trust that He is with us in every circumstance.
Your nightly prayer, Dear God, thank you for this past year.

(03:48):
It wasn't easy, but I know that you were with
me through it all. So I choose to be grateful
in every circumstance, not only the good days, but through
the difficult days too, Because when I face the hardest
seasons of life, I know you are working on my behalf. Lord.
As I look back, I can see how You provided

(04:09):
for me in ways beyond what I could hope for.
You brought me comfort, peace and strength, and my weariness.
I rejoice and give thanks for who you are in
my life, my healer, provider and good father in Jesus name,
I pray Amen. Three things to meditate upon. Number one,

(04:32):
let's turn to the passage in one Thessalonians five sixteen
through eighteen as inspiration tonight taking time to reflect on rejoicing, praying,
and giving thanks. What is one thing from this past
year you'd like to thank God for? Two? Think about
why it is God's will for us to be thankful?

(04:54):
What is one benefit of showing God our gratitude? And
number three, In the next few moments, reflect on a
difficult time where you can now see God's faithfulness. Allow
his peace and love to saturate your heart and bring
a calm reassurance that He was with you then and
he is with you right now. Thank you for listening

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
