Nancy 五歲被原生家庭賣給養母之後，十四歲跟著養母抵達美國展開新生活。十九歲她與第一任老公結婚時，養母非常反對，導致母女之間的關係幾乎決裂。但養母的態度，對 Nancy 來說一直是個謎；到將近半世紀後， Nancy 回台灣後才發現原因。
Nancy 的第一段婚姻並不幸福，並在丈夫的長期外遇之下畫下了句點。Nancy 因此陷入又一波人生的低潮，在好友的支持與專業心理諮商的輔導之下，她重新振作並將重心放到了事業上，成為了美國空軍的飛機工程主管，也因為工作而認識了第二任丈夫。
Nancy 的第二段婚姻非常幸福，有了兩個孩子，終於過上事業與家庭美滿的生活。幾年後，養父聯繫了 Nancy，將養母重病的消息告訴了她。Nancy 回到養母身邊，見到年老且虛弱的養母，意識到自己不能再和養母賭氣了，於是開始修復與養母之間的關係。
養母過世之後，Nancy 回到台灣見到自己的生母，得知了當年自己被賣給養母時，生父與養母之間的協議：合約中，生父提出「養母必須讓 Nancy 上學」，養母也提出「沒有經過養母同意的話，Nancy 不能嫁人」。Nancy 回想十九歲時，因為要結婚而導致跟養母的關係決裂，她才終於明白，養母當初為何如此反對她的婚姻。
但她也更認識到養母即使生活困頓，仍遵守約定讓自己上學的高尚品格。
經歷了波折的一生，坐在錄音室裡的 Nancy 現在約70歲，她說： “You have to love deeply, give freely, and be who you want to be with confidence.”
