核心觀點:出櫃不是一次性的「告知」,而是「和解的過程」。Zukkim 研究發現,主流文化中將出櫃視為「告知」,並不完全符合現實。例如,家人在這個「被告知」的過程中可能感到困惑,也可能會當作沒發生過,導致同志需要重複對家人訴說。

另一個迷思:「出櫃就是誠實面對自己」。Zukkim 發現,許多主流論述將出櫃等於唯一誠實面對自己的方式,或是主張出櫃會使你人生豁然開朗,但她的台灣同志研究顯示,這些論述在台灣並不完全適用,也可能造成同志的壓力和自我批評。

在親子的互動上一個錯誤的預設:在出櫃過程前,或是過程中,有時同志朋友會做出一系列的舉動旁敲側擊父母是否接受同志身份,但預測跟實際情況有時差很多。

回到「和解」的概念:出櫃比較像應是一個「和解」的過程。一開始,同志與家人間發現兩方對於人生規畫有不一樣的想像,因此想要拉近彼此對於這個想像的距離。在這過程中,雙方會用不同的方式讓對方理解自己的想法與現況,包括用個人經歷、朋友經驗、權威的說法等等。此外,有時人生中的生離死別,可能會使家長或是同志子女認為出櫃或同志身份不再那麼重要了。

主持人強調,和解的過程是讓雙方將認知差異調整到一個能夠接受的範圍,至於能不能達到這個目標,就得看天時地利人和,以及對自己和家人的了解和溝通。

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary.
