Son nom a inspiré des poèmes, des romans, des chansons… L’orfèvre américain Paul Revere est entré dans l’histoire grâce à sa "Midnight Ride" du 18 au 19 avril 1775 : une longue chevauchée nocturne de Boston à Lexington pour avertir John Hancock et Samuel Adams des mouvements de l’armée britannique. Ce fait d’arme a changé le cours de la guerre et contribué à bâtir les futurs États-Unis d’Amérique. Mais si l’histoire accorde une place importante à la chevauchée de Paul Revere, elle laisse de côté le rôle pourtant déterminant qu’il a eu avant et pendant la Guerre d’Indépendance américaine.
