Le nom de Polo est évidemment gravé dans la légende des grands explorateurs. Bien sûr, Marco y a largement contribué en décrivant avec minutie son voyage en Chine et sa vie auprès de l’empereur Mongol Kubilai Khan. Mais Marco Polo doit beaucoup à son père Niccolò et à son oncle Matteo. Ces deux hommes d’affaires vénitiens ont commencé leur carrière en établissant des comptoirs marchands le long de la route vers l’Europe de l’Est et l’Asie, avant de voyager jusqu’en Chine… à deux reprises ! La seconde fois, ils ont emmené avec eux le jeune Marco, alors âgé de 17 ans, contribuant ainsi au début de sa légende. Mais il n’y a pas de raison que les deux frères Polo restent dans l’ombre de leur descendant.
