במהלך המלחמה מול איראן התחדדה ההבנה שקפריסין הפכה למעין עורף אסטרטגי של מדינת ישראל. במשך שנים ישראלים רבים טיילו באי, אחרים התחתנו בו ובשנים האחרונות אפילו קמה בו קהילה ישראלית גדולה. הקהילה הזו גם גרמה למנהיג המפלגה השנייה בגודלה בפרלמנט להתרעם על המהגרים החדשים שבאים לאי ומקימים בתי כנסת ומסגרות חינוך פרטיות.
אבל הסיפור של קפריסין הוא הרבה יותר גדול מישראל. יש לו היסטוריה יוצאת דופן של סכסוך אלים בלי הרבה אלימות, כ-40% משטחו הוא מדינה לא מוכרת, יש בו בסיסי צבא בריטיים ובשנים האחרונות מתערבבים בו אינטרסים של המעצמות הגדולות בעולם. אינטרסים שגורמים למוסקבה, למשל, לממן את אותו ראש מפלגה שהתרעם נגד הישראלים.
