كسرت مقاومة الريف المغربي بقيادة عبد الكريم الخطابي شوكة المستعمِر الإسباني، والذي كان يضم مغاربة في صفوفه، ثم استخدمهم فرانكو لاحقًا كذخيرة بشرية في حربه الأهلية حيث عُرفوا بشراسة قتالهم وأطلِق عليهم "مغاربة فرانكو".
جد ضيفنا نور الدين دحان كان واحدًا من الجنود المغاربة ضمن صفوف المستعمِر الذي واجه الخطابي، أما والده فقد التحق بالجيش الإسباني بعمر 13 عامًا وخاض الحرب الأهلية الإسبانية كاملة، ثم أصبح ضابطًا في الجيش المغربي، ووجهت له دعوة للانضمام إلى انقلاب الصخيرات على ملك المغرب الحسن الثاني ولكنه رفض.
