2022年シーズン終了後、埼玉西武ライオンズは辻発彦監督の後任として、松井稼頭央監督の就任を発表しました。
松井稼頭央監督は1993年ドラフト3位でライオンズに入団。東尾監督の指導のもと「他の選手の５倍練習している」とも言われたほどの厳しい練習に耐え抜き、3年目の1996年シーズン開幕からレギュラーをつかみ、球界屈指のプレイヤーに成長しました。
2004年には日本人内野手初のメジャーリーガーとしてニューヨークメッツに入団。その後コロラドロッキーズ、ヒューストンアストロズに2010年まで7シーズン在籍。 日本球界復帰は2011年。2017年まで楽天イーグルスに在籍し、2018年には古巣ライオンズに復帰し、その年限りで現役を引退。
2019年シーズンからライオンズの2軍監督を3年、そして2022年シーズンはヘッドコーチとして辻監督を支えました。
東尾修さんと松井稼頭央監督、深い信頼関係で結ばれた師弟が、ライオンズの新たなる黄金期到来に向けて語り合いました。
