In this week's podcast Allan shares a resource to help with future diversification, an article discussing the insurance industry, and an investing intro podcast worth bookmarking to share with future newbies.
In a week where the FTSE 100 hits fresh highs of over 9000 Allan discusses how to cope when your own, painstakingly planned, portfolio actually goes down.
"If you can't beat 'em, join 'em!"
Allan hopes you are all following IG Groups save our stock market campaign, and doing everything you can to make London the best place to invest in the world. But just in case that doesn't work out, this week's resource might be worth checking out. It's an Investors Chronicle series from the current custodian of their stock screens (as discussed in my review of 4 Ways to Beat the Market, by Algie Hall), that looks at applying their current screens to some overseas markets just to see if they can identify any promising international investments for anyone who wants to spread their wings a bit:
A new way to find global investment ideas
The article I'm recommending this week is written by Chris Lay, UK CEO at Marsh McLennan, in City AM., and it's a heavy one.
A UK captive insurance regime will make Britain more competitive
Insurance is one of those things that the UK does really well. It's child's play to find profitable insurance companies that pump out dividends on the UK market to stash in your portfolio, but understanding what they do, and how the industry actually works, is more of a challenge.
This week's podcast recommendation comes from a show which is unlikely to appear here very often. Martin Lewis, founder of moneysavingexpert.com and well-known financial advisor to the masses, usually focusses on daily finances, bills etc, and rarely mentions investing. In this episode of his podcast, following the UK Chancellor's Mansion House speech proposals to encourage more investing, he chats with a couple of guests about investing in general, the meaning of risk, how to get started, and much more.
Chances are that if you are listening to SITB then you won't learn much in the way of new stuff from this listen. However, it never hurts to have a refresher, and this is definitely one to bookmark so that you can share it with anyone you know who wants to dip their toe in the investing pool for the first time.
The episode is called "The Martin Lewis Podcast , A beginner’s guide to investing… who should, how much & where to do it". You can listen to it on Apple Podcasts here or search for it on your podcast player of choice.
