It’s the late 1970s in Belleville, a quiet suburb of Detroit about half an hour’s drive from the city centre. Detroit is located on the northern perimeter of the United States, so close to the border in fact that you can see Canada on the other side of the river that runs alongside the city. Detroit is a metropolis on the margins. At the local high school in Belleville there is a student, Juan Atkins, whose passions revolve around music, particularly various forms of electronic and funk music. He even studies a data processing course at school because, as he understands it, you need to be a computer scientist to make music. It is around this time that he also reads a near 500 page length book, titled “This Business Called Music”, to serve his vision of making robotically sounding music and selling it himself. Little does Atkins, or any of his peers, know that after he graduates these interests will contribute to him becoming part of a musical duo called Cybotron, whose innovative sound in early tracks like “Alleys of Your Mind” will contribute to changing the world’s sonic landscapes...
